MODULE 01 How to draw a croissant?

The most critical part of the module is analyzing the texture of the surface and the depth of the intervals in the croissant with accurate methods. Simultaneously, studying the space in the croissant through hand-drawing.

Firstly, taking photos of the croissant from different sides and observing the details of the croissant. In the second stage, the importance of the surface cannot be underestimated. The croissant is drawn in several layers with fine pen and pencils to focus on different purposes. For instance, the layers drew in fine pen focus on the texture of the surface, and the layers illustrated with pencils emphasize the change of the surface’s depth. In the last step, using the grids to double check the accuracy of the section’s drawings. According to drawing the croissant in details, the proportion of the croissant should be studied mainly. Utilizing the various tools to express the details of the croissant is the other essential part of the module.

MODULE 02 Flatness vs. Projection


New Mario World

In the drawing, mountains with dots are the principal element which creates the hierarchical landform which also indicates the vertical axis at the same time. Based on the spatial structure created by the mountains, the different elevations of water canals can incline the diversity of height. Secondly, the water is the vital element to extend the space from horizontal to the vertical direction. On the right-hand side, a continuous section of the hill can be seen as the foreground which given an imaginary space of the middle area for viewers. Moreover, on the back of the world, there is an interval which reveals compositions hidden beyond the mountains. Apart from the context above, the other elements in the world such as three kinds of boxes, small shrubs, and the pipes of a tunnel are not only as decorations also the path for Mario in the game. Some of them are either accessible passages or barriers for moving on. They are useful elements not only in the game also in this spatial construction. Last but not least, the cloud above the ground and the background make an influence on the atmosphere which illustrates the weather condition, not a sunny day, and creates an authentic effect of this projection.

According to both elevations, the spatial structure of this world emphasizes the hidden space in the middle which is the core of the world. This area should be given an indispensable role to create a vivid atmosphere and connect two projections.

The first projection of Mario world was focused on the spatial structure of the invisible space and the accuracy between elevations and axonometric view to study the whole space of Mario world. After that, the combined projection of Mario world intended to use water canals which plays a necessary role of connection to be furnished in the Mario world; the water system is a flexible element in the world which creates a more natural atmosphere. Simultaneously, clouds are combined in the stage.

In thThe terriain of the Module was took as a primary considerarion before picking the units.The terrain looks like a slope; therefore, The units picking based on their height, and the intervals which were seen from top and section.There are two basis height of the unit, 39.6mm, 19.8mm, and 29.7mm. At the same time,The intervals of the units are caved from thin rectangle to the square. following the rule from high to the lower point and Using 2 attractor points to arrange the patternin random. Last but not least, the structure of the final version is the best one because part of units are connected back to back, which creates a stable model.

In this Module, the majority task is to create a pattern by various panels. The five units, observing from different views, create various intervals in a progressive method. Height is designed from high to low; intervals are built from thin rectangular to square. As the diagrams above, the five different units are designed in the symmetry direction; simultaneously, the heigh’s arrangement of the model followed the diagonal orientation and the shape of the terrain. To create a stable physical model can be self-supporting, the 5th unit on the diagonal grid was arranged back to back. At the same time, the back to back ‘s arrangement can enhance the change in height.

MODULE 04 Frame vs. Field


Invisible Cities_ Continuous City 5_Penthesilea

In the venue, the primary element is the natural environment as the story mentioned that “Penthesilea is a soupy city diluted in the plain.� It means the landscape is the most potent element in the scenes. According to the condition, the columns in the venue are covered by various climbers to reduce the visual impact of the construction. The most buildings in the Penthesilea are shabby and run-down, simultaneously, the artificial objects in Penthrsilea are eroded by vegetations. Furthermore, people would lose their sense of direction due to the similar surrounding.

Key Light- Dark Passage of Time People/Crowds

When someone first time came to the city, the truth would break their imagination. There is no central luxury city and crowded commercial area. The element can only be witnessed in the city are many natural elements, such as wetland, fields and shabby market. Moreover, they might feel upset that when they have got into the city, they would never leave Penthesilae. The truth of Penthesileais is that the city is a prison of the dreamer who wants to travel around the world; however, here is a paradise for those they to escape the real society.

In the perspective, the surrounding of the background can be illustrated and observed clearly. Moreover, the visual extension can enhance the sense of “continuity,” and displays the atmosphere of diluting. In this perspective, there are several human-made stacks of stones, made by the people who tried to make a sign to find out their “correct” direction even got lost in the city in the end. At the same time, the most ironic part in Penthesilea is when someone asks other people to find out the path to the central city; they would make a broad gesture and give an unclear direction. No one can indicate the entrance and exit of the city because no one left the city when someone got in. The city is a mental maze; if someone wants to escape from Penthesilea the only thing could do is pursuing ownself that the person is on the accurate path even there is no one would agree with the decision.

In the perspective, the distance between people should be emphasized due to the straight visual line. Moreover, the view can display the sequence of the market of the story scene Here, another corner of the city, there is a market, a paradise in the city. Like an ideal city, there is no class conflict in Penthesilea because no one can leave the city and they do not have methods to earn more money than other people. A carnival with a Ferris wheel, shamble, and several shops can be seen in the picture. There is no any mark of the direction in the area because people can find the area by “memory of their body.� Everyone in the area always looks satisfaction due to the area is the paradise of the city where they can get anything they need on the street.

Reflection

During the semester, the most dispensable part I learned is the accuracy. Each project was processed with one to two lectures. The content of the lecture gave me new thought to modify my work. The concept from others is vital due to the blind spot cannot be found out quickly. Moreover, the lecture assisted students to rethink the module in detail and workshops provide students the essential skills to develop the design. In Module 1, the skill of hand drawing was essential to express the detail of the croissant. Simultaneously, the basic knowledge of architectural drawings was mentioned. After that, the concept of the projection is necessary to develop the design of the Mario World. And the hidden space between the two elevations gives students opportunity to practice the idea. It is unbelievable that the digital skill could be enhanced in short time. Until Module 3, the first physical model was made. The skill of Rhino taught was useful when we started to create the pattern by the terrain provided. The other critical ability is the skill of physical model making. The physical model gave students opportunity to rethink the module mainly. Before the end of the semester, the last module regarding the scene of the invisible cities. Students transform the text into notations to describe the story. In the module, the most necessary task is to make a decision what kinds of atmosphere students would like to create. In the semester, module 2 is a shame. Not only the final work printed out on the wrong scale, but the wrong direction of the shadow happened in the same module. According to the condition, I did several modifications after the submission to improve the problem. To sum up, the subject provides us the basic but fundamental knowledge to develop the design with logic.
