We, tate University, agree to promote honesty, respect, sisterhood, and cooperation within the College Panhellenic and our respective chapters, and in our daily lives. This code of ethics is designed to inspire our members, reinforce exemplary conduct and valuesbased leadership, and perpetuate lifelong membership to enrich the sorority and Panhellenic experience.
We, as Panhellenic women of Indiana State University, agree on and commit to:
• Uphold and demonstrate the Panhellenic spirit in thought, word and action through our chapters as well as individual members.
• Demonstrate ethical behavior and conduct ourselves in a manner consistent with the mission and values of the College Panhellenic, each inter/national organization and our institution.
• Respectfully adhere to the Unanimous Agreements and all policies established by the National Panhellenic Conference.
• Avoid disparaging remarks about any sorority or collegiate woman and refrain from discussing Panhellenic matters with nonmembers, in accordance with the dignity and good manners of sorority women.
• Recognize friendly relations with all collegiate women, both sorority members and nonmembers, realizing the importance of creating and building friendships.
• Plan recruitment events that provide opportunities for the greatest possible number of women to become sorority members while protecting the rights and privileges of individuals and the chapters.
• Provide a safe, positive and enriching recruitment experience, understanding that membership is a social experience arrived at by mutual selection.
• Strive to be truthful, honorable, open and friendly to all potential new members during all recruitment events.
• Be respectful of the rights of every potential new member to make her own choices, including the right not to join the women’s sorority community.
• Refrain from limiting a potential new member’s chances of becoming a member of the Panhellenic community by encouraging her to make a single intentional preference or to limit her choices.
We, as Panhellenic women of Indiana State University, also agree on and commit to:
• Respectfully adhere to the bylaws and recruitment rules of the Indiana State University Panhellenic Association.
• Abide by all local and federal laws and NPC inter/national member organization bylaws.
• Hold one another accountable to these standards, remembering at all times that we represent not only our individual chapters but also the Panhellenic community as a whole.
As Panhellenic women of Indiana State University, these are the tenets by which we strive to live.
Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination Policy
The National Panhellenic Conference and the University of Cincinnati, in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Higher Education Act), do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin or ethnicity in any of their policies, practices or procedures.
Hazing Code
Hazing in any form at Indiana State University is absolutely forbidden. Hazing is defined as any activity which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental health, physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into, or affiliation with, any organization operating subject to the sanction of the public or private school or of any institution of higher education in the state of Indiana. In addition, Indiana State University Student Rights and Responsibilities Governing Student Behavior document prohibits any form of racial, ethnic and sexual harassment.
Alcohol Policy
Policies regarding the use and distribution of alcohol can be found in the Fraternity and Sorority Life Community Guidelines document on our website, as well as the Student Code of Conduct. Alcohol is strictly prohibited during Panhellenic Recruitment and New Member events. Additionally, members of fraternities and sororities must comply with local, state, and federal laws, as wellas policies outlined by their national organization, advisor(s), and housing board (if applicable).
Statement on Legacies
A legacy is defined differently by each inter/national organization. However, in general, legacy is defined as a woman whose sister, mother, or grandmother is a member of a National Panhellenic Conference sorority. It is important to note a sorority is not obligated to offer a bid to a legacy, and a potential new member is not obligated by anyone to commit to a chapter where she is a legacy. Please remember that the ultimate decision to join a chapter rests with the potential new member. The potential new member should not make a decision or be under pressure based on her legacy affiliation. The potential new member should make a choice based on where she is most comfortable, not on the experience of another individual.
Mutual Selection Process
Recruitment is a mutual selection process that balances the preferences of each potential new member with those of the existing sorority chapters The Panhellenic Association strives to allow every young woman an opportunity to find a sorority that best suits her personality, interests and future goals while providing an organized and unbiased membership selection process for the chapters. Invitations are only guaranteed to potential new members for the first round. There is no guarantee that a PNM will be invited to attend the second, third, or fourth event rounds. Invitations to subsequent rounds are made based on the selections of the chapters and the preferences of the potential new members PNM schedules will be maximized so that they are able to meet with as many chapters as possible during their recruitment experience. There is no guarantee that a woman will receive a bid to any sorority.
However, if a potential new member progresses through the week and attends all the events she is invited to during the fourth event round and lists each of those chapters on her preference sheet that night, it is very likely that she will receive a bid to one of those chapters. There is no specific formula that explains why a woman is released from a particular chapter, or why a woman prefers one chapter to another. The Panhellenic Association makes every effort to allow each potential new member the best opportunity to join the sorority of her choice, but there are no guarantees a young woman will be placed within that specific sorority. It is important to keep an open mind during recruitment week and to use the time to meet and make new friends!
Round 1: September 5th & 6th Open House
Round 2: September 7th Philanthropy
Round 3: September 8th
Sisterhood & Finance Review
See the next page for new member dues per chapter
Round 4: September 9th Preference
Bid Day: September 10th
New member dues differ between chapters.
The range is between $580-$1600.
This is the one time new member fee amount which mainly includes new member costs.
The MRABA is a binding agreement, and once signed cannot be altered or changed. Most importantly, if you sign the MRABA and choose not to join or stay in the sorority from which you received a bid, you cannot join another chapter until the next Primary Recruitment period.
List each of the chapters you will visit for preference. Read each statement below as it relates to each.
• Respond yes, no, or unsure.
• I would be happy to participate in this chapter’s philanthropy because it is interesting to me.
• I would be happy to participate in this chapter’s activities on campus.
• This sorority seems open to listening to the ideas of its members and willing to discuss important issues.
• This sorority has members that share my recreational and leisure activities.
• This sorority has members with the same academic interests as me and would help me keep up with my studies.
• The amount of time that I would be required to spend participating in chapter activities is reasonable.
• This sorority has an environment that I believe will encourage me to develop my talents as well as my new skills.
• I feel comfortable talking with the members of this sorority about things that are important to me.
• This sorority seems like a group that would support me as I progress through college.
• I can be myself when I am with the members of this sorority.
• The members of this sorority seem to get along well, and I think I would fit in well there.
• Being a member of this sorority can positively contribute to my college experience.
• I have qualities that would make me an asset to this sorority.
• I share the same values as this sorority. In general, if your feelings about at least some aspects of the chapter are somewhat negative, this may cause you not to be truly happy as a member there. If you think you want to talk about this with someone, please grab your Rho Gamma or a PA Executive Board member to discuss your concerns. If you chose “not sure” as an answer for any sorority, these are things you still need more information on. Use these questions as a guide for some questions to ask as you attend the preference party of that sorority.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Preference is the most serious day of recruitment. You may visit up to two sororities on this night. This round can be the most emotional step of the sorority recruitment process because it is after preferences that you must decide which sorority you would like to be a part of. The parties are usually serious and subdued. During preferences, think back on the previous rounds and recall what you liked best about each sorority. This will help you form a complete impression of the sororities, and help you to decide where you feel must comfortable.
After preference round, you will not have a chance to consult with anyone before making your final preferences. Because you cannot speak with your Rho Gamma, please consider the following questions to help you determine your choices .
Preference 1 Preference 2
Are the members interested in the same things as I am?
Are the financial requirements within my means?
Do I like the philanthropy?
Would I be happy working for the philanthropy?
Does the chapter seem to be open to new ideas and care about individual members?
Is there a commitment to academic excellence? Can they help me with my studies?
Do the values align with mine?
Does the chapter provide an environment that will encourage me to grow, learn new skills, and develop as an educated woman?
Are there members with whom I can share things that are important to me?
Do I feel at home with this group of women? Do I see myself as a member of this chapter?
Would I be happy to be a lifetime member of this organization?
Each Panhellenic Chapter lives by a set of values day to day. On the side is a list of personal & chapter related values. Think about your values and list 5 of them to help you remember your why for each one!
