Ateneo is derived from “Athens”, the ancient seat of learning. Naga comes from the word narra or Philippine mahoganys. Naga City, a center of religion, culture, education, and economics, is popularly known as the “Maogmang Lugar”.

Ateneo de Naga University is one of the nine colleges and universities in the Philippines run by the members if the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. The main campus is located northwest of the Metropolitan Cathedral, in the barangay of Bagumbayan Sur in Naga City. In SY 2003 – 2004, the high school transferred to a new campus in Pacol, now known as the Bonoan Campus, located at the slopes of Mt. Isarog, seven kilometers away from the main campus. The other jesuit schools in the Philippines are found in Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Zamboanga, Cebu, San Juan, Nuvali, Iloilo, and Culion.

Msgr. Pedro P. Santos, 31st prelate and first Archbishop of Caceres, invited Fr. John Hurely, S.J., then the Superior of The Philippine Jesuit Missions, to build a Jesuit school for boys in Naga. On 2 May 1940, Ateneo de Naga was founded with Francis D. Burns, S.J., as its director, aided by six Jesuits.

Classes formally startedin June 1940 at the building formerly used by the Camarines Sur Catholic Academy (now Naga Parochial School) with 650 elementary and high school students. Meanwhile, Msgr. Santos inirtiated the construction of the Jesuit faculty house and the Ateneo school building with the now well-known four pillars. These buildings were intended to be turned over to the Jesuits in 15 December 1941. However, this plan was tharted when the pacific war broke out.

When the Japanese came to Naga, the Ateneo was taken by the Japanese army and became a local “torture chamber”.

But as soon as the Philippine Independence was declared in 1946, the high school department of the Ateneo resumed classes with Fr. Burns as director.

On June 1 1946, full recognition as a standard four-year high school was granted by the Department of Education to Ateneo de Naga. On June 5 1947, a college for men was opened with 87 students. Ateneo conferred its first academic degrees in april 1950. On 26 October 1953, the Ateneo College Department became co-educational when fivewomen were granted admission into an all-male college.

In th fifties and sixties, new constructuins were added to thise built before war. Zin 1955, the gymnasium-auditorium, a silent witness to many important gathering, was completed. In 1961, the Archbishop. In 1968, Burns Hall was inagurated as monument to the semetery of Ateneo de Naga’s firs rector.

In the course of time several new buildings were added.: Modules 1 and 2, Phelan, Science Hall, Adriatico Hall, O’Brien Library, Fernando Conference Hall, Dolan Hall, Covered Courts, Xavier Hall, H.E., ACLC, Jesuit Residence University Church, and Arrupe Hall which replaced Module 2. #ST.IGNATIUS July 31 is the feast day of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, also known as Jesuit. In his feast day all the Jesuit community commemorate his feast day through different outreach programs and some other activities which shows the Ignatian values and Ignatian spirituality.

All Jesuit schools are also known for their Ignatiana Outreach which is also held during the feast day of St. Ignatius. Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Naga Univerty, Xavier School, Univercidad de San Ignacio and all Ateneo Universities and Xavier school branches are all example of Jesuit schools that can be found here in the Philippines.

Ateneo de Naga University(ADNU) is one of those Jesuit schools which gives much emphasis in the celebration of the feast day of St. Ignatius Loyola. Before the feast day of St. Ignatius their are a lot of Iganatian acitivities that is being held. One of those is the Ignatiana Outreach, it is an activity where ateneans commemorate the feast day of St. Ignatius through different outreach programs, such as; coastal clean up, mangroves reforestation, feeding program, pabahay and etc. There is also a community merienda which is free for everyone after the mass for St. Ignatius.

The feast day of St. Ignatius is a very memorable day for all ateneans and for all Jesuit communities, because it is not just an ordinary feast day, where everyone is just simly going to offer his/her prayers for the feast day of the said saint. In St. Ignatius feast day it is commemorated with different outreaches and programs where the Ignatian values are being observed. In thsese events all ateneans are highly encourage to participate and to showcase their Iganatian values.

St. Ignatius is known for his braveness in countless battles as a brave soldier of Loyola family and also as a soldier of God. He is also known for his humility and loving service for others, that is why in his feast day every ateneans and Jesuit community commemorates his feast day through various activities that may purchase Ignatian values and spirituality. It is all thanks to St. Ignatius of Loyola who fiunded the Society of Jesus.

March for INA: Traslacion 2014 by Lianne Therese Eclarinal

Sunny, with dry winds and stroke-inducing heat was the day of Traslacion. This was yhe day every Atenean awaited ever since the beginning of practices. Hundreds of students, distinguished by their uniforms, crowded the streets near the Penafrancia shrine, counted the minutes until the gloriously awaited start of Traslacion 2014. The atmosphere wa disheartining for some: It was simly too hot to cover such a distance by walking and therefore had to resort to umbrellas and sunglasses and hats to battle the fight against the endless sun. But of course, to the Ateneans who have been practicing and perfecting their march for Ina since August, this was merely a minor setback. Sure, they prayed for rain or atleast a gloomy skt to makes things a litle easier---but despite the weather, they never lost their dedication and will to walk for Ina on this grandiose day, the day dedicated to the wonderful mother of Jesus.

Before the actual event started, the presence of a rainbow-like halo surrounding the sun gave the Ateneans a certain time of special appreciation for Ina, who surely was looking down upon them and smiling each one of them in gratitude for this joyous day. And with all that, the Ateneans marched. They marched solemnly. They marched with joy in their hearts.

They marched with pride in every pore of their being. And, of course, they marched wholeheartedly, knowing that this wasn’t merely sacrificing time and energy. Never mind the temperature, never mind the distance, never the tired feeling, creeping through their toes to their legs, the weariness in their bones and the ache making its way to their skulls.

This was their own little way to express even just a bit of their love and devotion to our wonderful Ina. Halfway through the destination, the blistering heat was replaced by a wonderful gray sky, which, in comparison to the atmosphere earlier, was bliss for the students. Accompanied by a cool, gentle breeze, it was no doubt the loving cares of our Ina, reenergizing their spirits and rekinding the fire in their hearts.

And so, after more than a thousand steps accompanied by more than a thousand beats of a bass drum, the Ateneans march for Ina came to a close. Students celebrated with smiles, laughter, high-fives, and prayers after the momentous occasion.

There were shouts of congratulations and gratitude and thanksgiving for the sacrifices we made for the wonderful mother of our Savior. Here was to another year of making the school, the city, and Ina proud.

As an Atenean, what do you think is the meaning of "men and women for others"?

As an Atenean, I think that the meaning of "men and women for others" is being of service to the people around us and ultimately, to our Almighty Father. It is being selfless enough to live with the goal of not only improving our own lives but the lives of our brothers and sisters as well, just as how God would want us to spend our time here on Earth.

What is the most memorable experience of your life here in Ateneo de Naga University that helps to contribute to the total development of the family and human society?

I think that the most memorable experience that I've had so far here in Ateneo that helped to contribute to the total development of the family and human society is my first outreach program for the feast day of St. Ignatius de Loyola.

What will you get by being men and women for others?

By being men and women for others, we obtain a purpose for ourselves and a sense of belongingness to a community.

This leads us to more worthwhile and meaningful lives and a more progressive society.

1. As an Atenean, what do you think is the meaning of "men and women for others"?

As an Atenean, being men and women for others simply means being of service to others, having the courage to do good for your fellowmen.

2. What is the most memorable experience of your life here in Ateneo de Naga University that helps to contribute to the total development of the family and human society?

To experience the Jesuit education and living up the magis that simply means doing good and doing the best with all your might and passion. Besides from the quality of education that Ateneo offers, they also mold the personality of the students as they are to prepare to face the world.

3. What will you get by being men and women for others?

It's being ready to serve others which will make the foundation of a community strong.
