ISSX President’s Message By John O. Miners, ISSX President This Newsletter focuses primarily on the 19th North American meeting of ISSX, which will be held jointly with the 29th Meeting of the Japanese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (JSSX) in San Francisco in just a few weeks. This is our second joint meeting with JSSX – the first was held in Maui in 2005 and was a great success, attracting more than 1,100 registrants. The San Francisco meeting is dedicated to Professor Yuichi Sugiyama in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions to the field of xenobiotic disposition. Professor Sugiyama is a past President of both JSSX and ISSX. As I have indicated previously, organizing high-quality scientific meetings and international outreach are core activities of ISSX – partnering with JSSX ticks both boxes. Professors Eric Johnson and Tetsuya Terasaki, the meeting co-chairs, and their colleagues on the Meeting Organizing Committee have put together an excellent scientific
program. The meeting begins on Sunday, October 19 with four short courses, followed by plenary lectures and the Welcome Reception. The sixteen symposia scheduled between Monday, October 20 and Thursday, October 23 address a diverse range of topics that include biomarkers, chronopharmacology, drug-drug interactions, drug metabolizing enzymes, genomics, humanized rodent models, metabolomics, PK-PD, systems biology, therapeutic antibodies, transporters, toxicology issues in drug discovery, and transcriptional and post-translational regulation. These symposia are complemented with poster sessions, industry-sponsored symposia, a comprehensive trade exhibition, and lectures from Professor Thomas Baillie and Dr Nina Isoherranen, the respective recipients of the North American Scientific Achievement Award (in honor of Ronald W. Estabrook) and the North American New Investigator Award (in honor of James R. Gillette).
Like the first JSSX-ISSX meeting, the San Francisco meeting promises to be highly successful. In addition to the invited lectures, symposia and short courses, there are 550 poster submissions and 55 companies will be presenting their latest products and services in the trade exhibition. The meeting promises to be rewarding, scientifically and socially. The main social event is a dinner cruise on the San Francisco Spirit. I hope that you will join us in San Francisco for a great meeting. John O. Miners President International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics
