Mission Statement Northwood School is a coeducational, independent, boarding and day school serving students in grades nine through the post-graduate year. The school provides a setting for students to determine and to attain personal goals through a balance of rigorous academics, an awareness of the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, and the unique athletic opportunities available in the Olympic region. Through an appreciation of our smaller size, students, faculty and staff foster a sense of leadership, mutual respect, and community responsibility through daily caring and purposeful interaction.

Enrollment There are 137 boarding and 21 day students for the 2016-17 school year.

There are 19 states and 14 countries represented at Northwood. The class of 2017 has 60 seniors.

Accreditation Accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and chartered by the NYS Board of Regents Faculty There are 31 faculty members on staff and nearly half hold advanced degrees.

Student:Faculty Ratio 6:1 with an average class size of 10.

Financial Aid 55% of students receive financial aid. $2,544,160 was awarded for the 2016-17 school year.

Academic Calendar The school year is divided into two semesters. Each semester includes two eight-week marking periods. Each student has 200 minutes per class each week, and classes meet Monday through Friday. First quarter grades are available the third week in November and first semester grades are available the first week in February. Final grades are available the second week in June.

GPA, Rank and Weighting Only classes taken at Northwood School are used to calculate rank and grade point average (GPA). Rank and GPA at Northwood are not cumulative. They are indicated on the transcript as being for the marking period, semester or year. Pass/fail courses such as health and physical education are not included in rank. GPA and corresponding rank are weighted 0.5 for all honors courses (including French and Spanish IV and V, and calculus) and 1.0 for Advanced Placement courses.

Statement on Disciplinary Disclosure Upon direct request from a college or university for information pertaining to a student’s discipline record, college counselors will honestly and fully disclose if a student has been subject to a disciplinary response including, but not limited to, probation, suspension, dismissal or withdrawal from Northwood School. In the event of a change in a student’s disciplinary status after the filing of college or university applications, the Director of College Guidance will notify the colleges and/or universities in writing that the student’s status has changed and the reason for the change. The student is advised to communicate with the college or university before the Director of College Guidance. This policy is in compliance with the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
