by Kathy Wolfe This week, Tidbits focuses on famous folks named Ray. Follow along and soak up some “Rays”!

• Dubbed “The High Priest of Soul,” Ray Charles blended the musical genres of rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues into a style all his own. He was born Raymond Charles Robinson to sharecropper parents in Georgia, and by age three, he had a love of music. A local café owner regularly played boogie woogie on an old piano and taught young Ray how to play. At four years old, Ray began losing his sight as the result of glaucoma, and by seven, was completely blind. He was enrolled in the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind and there began to develop his talent, where he played Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. At 15, he was an orphan. At 22, he landed a record contract with Atlantic Records where his long list of hits began. In 1960, at age 30, his fame skyrocketed with “Georgia on My Mind” and four Grammy Awards. Although he battled heroin addiction for 16 years, he kicked the habit in 1966 at age 36. Ray Charles sang at two Presidential inaugurations, and “Rolling Stone” magazine has ranked him at #2 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.”

• Famous chef Rachael Ray grew up in the restaurant business with restaurant manager parents.

But her first job in New York City was working at the candy counter at Macy’s, where she worked her way up to manager of the fresh foods department. It was while working at a gourmet market in Albany, New York, that she conceived the idea of “30 Minute Meals” for customers who were unenthusiastic about cooking. The local television station asked her to host a weekly segment during the newscast, which led to a best-selling book and a contract with the “Today Show.” Five years later, she debuted her own Emmy Award-winning talk show.

• Sugar Ray Robinson is ranked one of history’s greatest professional boxers, with 108 knockouts in 200 pro bouts. His 91-fight unbeaten streak ranks third longest in boxing history. Muhammad Ali referred to Robinson as “the king, the master, my idol.” Sugar Ray wasn’t really a Ray at all, but was born Walker Smith, Jr. in 1921. When he retired from boxing in 1965, his record was 173 – 19 – 2, and he had never been physically knocked out in a fight.

He was also was owner of a fashionable restaurant, Sugar Ray’s, a hangout of Frank Sinatra, Joe Louis, Lena Horne, and Jackie Gleason. Unfortunately, at the time of his retirement, Robinson had spent all of the $4 million in career earnings. He appeared in a few minor film roles, but health problems plagued him, and he passed away from complications of diabetes and Alzheimers Disease at age 67.

• Sugar Ray Robinson was followed by another pro boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard, born in 1956. Leonard’s mother named him after her favorite singer, Ray Charles. Leonard was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in the ring and was named the 1980s Boxer of the Decade. His career included eight world titles. His first big victory was the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship in 1973.

Leonard was chosen for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team, a team that is considered the greatest boxing team in the Olympics’ history. After capturing a gold medal that year, Leonard intended to study business administration at the University of Maryland.

However, financial difficulties forced him into the professional arena, and in 1977 he made his professional debut, being paid $40,044 for the evening’s work. Leonard retired in 1982, then made a comeback, retired again in 1984, followed by another comeback. The action was repeated in 1987 and 1991, with his final retirement in 1997, following the only time he was ever knocked out. He has been a TV boxing analyst for ESPN, a television and movie actor, and contestant on Dancing with the Stars. He is also deeply involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

• Singer-songwriter Ray Stevens is known for his humorous novelty hits such as “Gitarzan,” “Ahab the Arab,” and “The Streak.” Born Harold Ray Ragsdale, Stevens grabbed five Grammy nominations and a win in 1970 for his serious recording “Everything is Beautiful.” But his most famous hit is “The Streak,” Number One on the charts in 1974, a song about that decade’s fad of running nude in public. Those familiar with the song will recall its famous line, “Don’t look, Ethel!”

• Businessman Ray Kroc didn’t actually found the McDonald’s hamburger chain, but he did build it into the world’s most successful fast food restaurant. Kroc had been involved in many different undertakings before becoming involved in the hamburger business in his 50s. At age 15, he lied about his age to begin serving as a Red Cross ambulance driver in World War I. It was here he met Walt Disney, who would remain his lifelong friend. After the war he became a paper cup salesman, a pianist, and a radio DJ. Kroc met the McDonald brothers, Dick and Mac, when he was working as a milkshake machine salesman.

Peddling a machine that mixed five shakes at a time, he sold several machines to the brothers’ restaurant chain. The ambitious Kroc worked as a franchising agent for them in exchange for a percentage of profits, and at age 53, he became president of the corporation. At age 59, he was the owner, buying out the brothers for $2.7 million. When he died at age 81, McDonald’s was an $8 billion corporation with 7,500 locations in 31 countries. Not bad for a man without a high school diploma! With a personal worth of $500 million, Kroc was also the owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team for the final 10 years of his life. Time magazine included Ray Kroc in their list of the “Top 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.” Today, the chain has 36,000 locations in more than 100 countries.

Fishing Report, White/Norfork River Hi Gang,

We have dodged a bullet when it comes to heavy rains just north of us. The White and Norfork rivers are in good condition being generally clear and holding in the low to medium levels. That makes for continued good fishing with lots of fish being caught and the average size remains remarkable.

All of our customers at Rose’s Trout Dock have been catching plenty of nice fish. The majority of fish are Rainbows and a few Brown Trout. We haven’t had any really big fish caught this week but that will probably change this week with the good conditions.

The Smallmouth bite on the White below the Buffalo has slowed but there are still some catchable fish around. Work small plastic baits like Gitzits and crawfish pattern Crank Baits around the shady banks with boulders and rocks around.

The generation schedules are allowing for some good wading opportunities for the Fly Fishermen on both rivers early in the day. There are many Dragon Flies in the air and using big Terrestrial patterns is beginning to produce some explosive surface strikes.

Temperatures have moderated just a bit and it is comfortable on the river at least until noon time, so get out there and enjoy the rest of this great summer fishing.

--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time I go onto social media I see pictures and videos of adorable pets doing adorable things. This includes my friends’ pets. But I know from experience that not all of my friends’ dogs and cats are so cute and well-behaved. My worry is that people will see all these cute animals and think taking care of a pet is easy, when it really isn’t. I have two rescue animals, a cat and a dog. They both have health and behavioral issues. Forget about holding still for a picture! What are your thoughts on this social-media trend? -- Carol in Saginaw, Michigan DEAR CAROL: I’m honestly not sure that social-media images and videos necessarily give the impression that caring for a pet is easy.

Perhaps a few years ago, when not everyone was on Facebook or Instagram, some may have thought owning a dog or cat was an easy task.

People post videos and pictures of their families and their pets at their very best (or cutest or funniest) on social media because they’re proud of them. You don’t see a whole lot of videos of baby with an earache, or two ordinarily congenial dogs suddenly snapping at each other, or that day Sparky got worms. Not many of those stressful dramas that make up everyday life make it into a social-media feed.

It’s also totally fine to be proud of your pets and not post pictures of them online. You don’t even need a reason.

So, be gentle with your friends and their tendency to post tons of awww-inducing moments. It’s more important that those pets are loved and cared for, just as it sounds like you are doing with your two pets.

RAYS In keeping with the theme of “rays,” Tidbits goes underwater to gather info on the beautiful and unusual creatures known as rays.

• The scientific classification Batoidea includes the cartilaginous fish known as rays. The flatbodied rays have a boneless skeleton consisting of a tough elastic material. The flat body enables the ray to conceal itself while seeking out its prey.

The ray stirs up the sand and hides beneath it.

• About 600 species of rays exist, with varying kinds found in every ocean around the world, from the warm tropics to the freezing cold waters in the Arctic. Many species are closely related to the shark. The largest species is the manta ray, with its central disc measuring up to 29.5 feet (9 m) wide. It also has the largest brain of all fish.

More than 300 rows of tiny teeth line the lower jaw. A manta consumes about 60 lbs. (27.2 kg) of plankton and fish every day. Found only in the warmer tropical waters, it can live for 25 years. It is completely harmless to humans.

• A ray’s mouth is on the underside of its body, and its eyes are on top. Because the ray can’t use its eyes to seek its prey, electro-sensors help them detect electrical charges emitted by the clams, oysters, shrimp, crabs, and mussels it feeds on.

• The smallest ray is a tiny electric ray measuring just 4 inches (10 cm) across and weighing only 1 lb. (0.5 kg).

• Electric rays are capable of producing an electric charge from 8 to 220 volts. They hide in the sand, waiting for their prey, which they stun and capture. The genus Torpedo, one of the 69 species of electric rays, gave us the name for the warfare device known as the torpedo, a word that translates from the Latin torpere, meaning to be stiffened or paralyzed.

• There are no reported human fatalities from electric rays. As early as 46 AD, a Roman physician recorded the use of torpedo fish for the treatment of headaches and gout.

• Stingrays have a barbed stinger measuring about 14 inches (35 cm) in length on their tail used for self-defense. Two grooves contain venom, concentrated under a thin layer of skin. They are not hostile creatures and don’t aggressively attack humans, and normally swim away; however, they will sting if stepped on. A sting usually causes pain, swelling, and muscle cramps, but is very rarely life-threatening to humans. Usually, the stinger breaks off in the wound, and surgery is sometimes required to remove it.

• It’s not unusual for large stingrays to reach a weight of 790 lbs. (358.3 kg). Baby stingrays are born fully developed, emerging as a little adult, and begin to take care of themselves as soon as they’re born.

• Stingrays prefer warmer, shallower, near-theshore waters.

• In ancient Greece, the venom of stingrays was used by dentists as an anesthetic.

• The death of wildlife expert Steve Irwin occurred in 2006 when a stingray barb pierced him in the chest, puncturing his thoracic wall, while Irwin was filming an underwater documentary film.

• A group of stingrays is known as a “fever.”

It was made by Poynter Products in 1957 and featured a storage stand. With the original cap and stand, and in good condition, your item is probably worth in the $75 to $150 range, according to several I found on eBay. *** Q: I have a small syrup pitcher that I have been told is a piece of Stemless Daisy. It is very similar to milk glass but has relief-molded flowers on a crosscut background, which is much different from the milk glass I have seen. Can you help me identify this piece? -- Barbara, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Stemless Daisy, sometimes called Cosmos, is a pattern glass that was produced by Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company between 1894 and about 1915. Although milk glass, the floral design makes the Cosmos pieces unique. Although I was unable to find Cosmos glass being offered on eBay, I suspect your pitcher might be valued in the $200 to $300 range. It is rare, it is early, and it is desirable. *** Q I have an incredible collection of baseball cards that was started by my dad during the 1950s. Although I haven’t counted them, they fill six shoeboxes. Can you recommend some price guides?

• Brazilian model, actress, and producer Gisele Bundchen is the world’s highest-paid model in the world, and the 16th richest woman in the entertainment industry. Bundchen, worth an estimated $360 million, married New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2009. What about her equally-beautiful twin sister Patricia? Patricia, five minutes younger than her sister, tried modeling for a short time, but prefers to stay in the background serving as the manager of Gisele’s career. Gisele claims she owes her success to Patricia’s exceptional management skills.

• Vin Diesel is best known for his work in “The Fast and the Furious” film series. Raised in New York City, Diesel was born Mark Sinclair Vincent, and has a twin brother named Paul Vincent. Paul remains out of the spotlight, working as a film editor, and is rarely photographed in public.

• Actress Scarlett Johansson, star of “The Avengers,” has a twin brother Hunter, three minutes younger than his celebrity sister. Hunter did appear with Scarlett in the 1996 film “Manny & Lo” at age 12, but since then has been out of the limelight, with the exception of being listed in People magazine’s list of “Hot Bachelors” in 2008. Hunter seems more interested in politics, having worked as a community and campaign organizer. He also joined his sister in a fundraiser for victims of 2012’s Hurricane Sandy.”

• Iowa native Ashton Kutcher got his big acting break in 1998, landing a role in “That 70s Show.” While Ashton weighed in at 10.5 lbs. (4.76 kg) at birth, his fraternal twin Michael was a much smaller 4 lbs. (1.8 kg). Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three, and plagued with heart problems, Michael underwent a heart transplant at age 13. Today, in addition to serving as a spokesperson for an advocacy organization that researches cerebral palsy, Michael, who has a business management and marketing degree, is in the business of selling retirement plans.

• Swedish-born actress Ingrid Bergman of “Casablanca” fame gave birth to twin daughters Isabella and Isotta Ingrid Rossellini in Rome in 1952.

Isabella followed in her mother’s acting footsteps at age 24, along with a modeling career. Her fraternal twin Isotta chose an academic career, and became a professor of Italian literature at New York University.

• We know Kiefer Sutherland for his role as Jack Bauer on the hit TV series “24”. Born in London to actor Donald Sutherland and his wife Shirley Douglas, Kiefer has a twin sister, Rachel, who is also involved in the entertainment industry. Rachel works behind the scenes in post-production and as a casting assistant for movies and television.

• Several celebrities were twins for a very short time, with siblings who died at birth, including Elvis Presley who had a twin brother Jesse. Others include Andy Garcia, Liberace, and Ed Sullivan.

I think my four pawed family member Ruby must always be amazed the places she gets to. Ruby loves her spa days. This week I surprised her with an excursion to Dog Gone Pretty. We were only there a short time before Ruby and I felt at ease with our surroundings. Being a true service dog, she is convinced that I cannot function with out her support. Therefore she feels it necessary that I accompany her to her spa day. She whines if I Ieave her sight. Jamey Cox, owner and Operator of Dog Gone Pretty took special care of Ruby and I. She did wonders with Ruby’s shaggy coat. We will go back again. They have Ruby’s approval.

ANNUAL WHITE RIVER CANOE RACE

Adventure seeking boy scouts and families were at the boat ramp near the base of the Bull Shoals Dam early last Thursday morning waiting for the 50th Annual Boy Scouts Invitational White River Canoe Race to begin! This race is certainly a long withstanding event that runs from the Ozark Mountains near Bull Shoals Lake to the foothills of Batesville, Arkansas.

The three day race starts near the Bull Shoals dam area. Water releases are increased to ensure that good time is made down the river even by inexperienced teams. The river doesn’t have very many obstructions but the fog is usually heavy in the early morning. This year the race started at 9:00 a.m. giving the majority of fog a chance to lift. I was fortunate to have my friend Eddie Bansemer agree to get out early and set up a good location for pictures and video.

A special thanks to Charlie Newland of Newland’s Foat Trips-Lodge & Conference Center for allowing us to launch at their ramp! Of course we brought a few fishing poles along to fill our time while waiting for the race to start. Boated a few nice rainbow trout for the smoker as the morning fog began to lift and paddlers neared our spot.

117.6 Mile Canoe Race

After the start, vehicles with the extra paddlers must take off for Cotter City Park boat ramp to be ready for the first change out. The first leg will take 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. Once the first paddlers come in, they get out of the canoe and the second set of two paddlers get in and are off to Buffalo City the site of the second change out. The change out is very important. The heat to Buffalo City takes a little shorter time than the first leg. The vehicles then quickly head off for Buffalo City with the team members who will paddle the last leg from Buffalo City to Norfork. There is no rest time at the change outs. Second day starts at Norfork. The change out this day is at Calico Rock. This leg of the race will take about 2 hours. The fifth leg from Calico to Sylamore will take about the same amount of time.

The third day is the hardest paddling day of all. The water has slowed down and the river is wider. This leg is 21 miles from the Sylamore boat ramp to Dam No. 3 where the canoes clock out. This will be the longest leg of the race and may take teams over 3 hours to complete. Extreme care should be taken when canoes are approaching Dam No. 3. Assistance will be needed to carry the safety boats around the dam also. Once all the canoes are in and we have a short rest, the 7th leg starts below Dam No. 3 and goes to Dam No. 2. After all the canoes are in and after a short rest, we start the last leg of the race to Batesville. The 8th leg is 8.8 miles. In past years the race has had teams enter from Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Minnesota and Arkansas. In 1986, Division CC-Team P 301 held the record time with 13:07:23. In 2008 that record fell to Division BA-Team C 313 with a record breaker of 13:02:00 and also that year Division OC-Team C 300 in a standing record of 11:41:06. As a minimum, each member of teams placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in all divisions will receive an award. Additional awards and or patches may be presented to members or teams completing the race. All traveling trophies will be kept by the winning team or crew I’m always looking for a good story! for one year.
