YOUR CAREER IN MOTOR SPORT / A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY
NAME
JANETTE TAN JOB TITLE
First work experience My first job was also in a male-dominated industry, dealing with fire and electrical systems. It wasn’t easy navigating the industry in the beginning, and I spent a lot of time reading up on everything I could lay my hands on and asked a lot of questions. I enjoyed my work then, and was very lucky to receive guidance and do well in the industry. But motor sport has been a passion since I was young, so when a job offer came I did not hesitate to grab it!
What does your life look like now? My life is about all motor sport and I’m loving it! I have been a part of the Singapore Grand Prix since the inaugural event in 2008. I am heavily involved in the Race Operations aspect of the event as the Volunteer Manager overseeing the recruitment, training and engagement of about 900 volunteers and officials. We have an average retention rate of approximately 90% every year. I am the main liaison with the FIA Formula 1 Race Director. I also volunteer with the local ASN, Motor Sports Singapore. I have also officiated at many national races. On a regional and international level, I have represented my country as a member of the FIA Volunteers and Officials Commission since 2014.
Your advice for the next generation A lot of people perceive motor sport to be a male-dominated industry, but this is actually not true. Many women work and excel in different aspects of the industry. What is important is passion and having the correct attitude towards learning and contributing back into the industry we love. Work on your interpersonal skills and knowledge; with strong integrity and passion, you can achieve anything.
How can we contact you to get more information or help? You can email me at janettetan@mss.org.sg and I will be happy to help in any way I can.
