I

've been in Soroptimist of El Centro since 2009 and had the pleasure of seeing this club do wonderful things for the women in our community. As your newly

elected President for fiscal year 2020-2021, I look forward to working with such a fun and talented group of women. Together we can do amazing work improving the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

Although this year has been the most challenging due to COVID-19, I know we can find unique ways to continue our fundraising efforts.

Keeping our membership strong and awareness in our community of our club and what we stand for are some of my goals. We want our Imperial Valley to know we are continuing to work hard for women and girls who need us. Together we can brainstorm and make this year a memorable one.

Soroptimist Club was first formed in 1921 in Alameda County, California with just over 80 business and professional women from Oakland.

During this time, women were not permitted to join service organizations, so in an effort to combat this issue, this organization was formed to bring about the vision that women and girls would achieve their individual and collective potential through advocacy work and projects that would help ensure that they would have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities in the present and future .

From the first project of "Save the Redwoods" to later earning an awarded Category C Consultative status with UNESCO, this organization went from just a small service club to an international organization with four federations: Soroptimist International

LIVE YOUR DREAM Education & Training Award for Women

Every year Soroptimist International of El Centro distributes more than $3,000 in education grants to women in the Imperial Valley. Over half our recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Most of the women have overcome obstacles such as teen pregnancy, poverty, homelessness and drug or alcohol addiction. We make it our mission to give these women the chance to further their education and start over so they can continue their journey to completing their education and have a chance to start the career of their dreams. The awards that are given out go to offset the costs that are associated with their plans to achieve their higher education including but not limited to transportation, housing, children, food, tuition and so on.

DREAM IT, BE IT Career Support For Girls

Every year our goal is to break down barriers for girls to achieve their education and career goals. We work with our local community to provide mentoring workshops and conferences for those girls in our Imperial Valley community that need help. We understand that as girls, we often face barriers of gender and sometimes with the added obstacles of poverty, unstable home lives, living in foster care or teen motherhood. It is this in mind that we partner with girls to provide them with the resources they need and want to be successful in their journey to attain higher education. Our goal is that by reaching these girls we can help them stay healthy and safe and makes strides to prevent them from being in crisis in the future. Our mission is to put girls on a path that will lead them to realize their dreams. We are constantly evolving this program and look forward to the new year to implement more ideas and add to our curriculum.

THE SOROPTIMIST RUBY AWARD For Women Helping Women

The Ruby Award is a special recognition given annually to three Imperial Valley women in celebration and recognition of their endeavors of giveing back to the Imperial Valley community through their career and personal efforts. This award was instituted to honor SIA's first federation President Ruby Lee Minar. The ruby that is used to represent these recipients comes from both Ruby's namesake and the qualities that are associated with the gemstone which is long considered to be the stone of love and embodies the virtues of wisdom, importance, vitality, strength and power, all characteristics that embody the award recipients.

The Ruby Award is hosted annually during out "Wine, Women & Dessert" Wine Tasting Fundraiser, but unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances of a global health pandemic, SI El Centro was not able to host its annual premier event. Despite cancelling this event, we honored our recipients in a special editorial announcement and look forward to celebrating them properly next year when we can all gather safely again. SI CORONADO LEGENDS AWARDS

This year one of SI El Centro's members, Dr. Martha Garcia, was selected to receive the 2020 Legends Award. This award celebrates and bestows the title of "Legend" to six exceptional women who have have served their community. state or nation as leaders and contributors to the improvement in the lives of women and girls. Legends have distinguished themselves through their efforts to guide and inspire others and serve as role models of caring for and commitment to a better world. This year's awardees were all Chief Executive Officers from community colleges in the San Diego and Imperial County areas that have helped served more than 200,000 students. Apart from being leaders, they have also contributed directly or indirectly to programs by Soroptimist.

Dr. Martha Garcia 2020 LEGENDS AWARDEE Dr. Martha Garcia serves as the ninth Superintendent and President for Imperial Valley College (IVC) and is the first woman to lead the college. She began her employment at IVC in 1999. She has previously held positions of Vice President for Student Services and Vice President for Academic Services.

Dr. Garcia has focused on serving minority and underrepresented students through her successful grantwriting efforts and by developing Career Technical Education (CTE) programs that integrate academic studies with counseling and other student services resources.

Dr. Garcia earned a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Community College Leadership from San Diego State University, a Master's Degree in Educational Counseling from National University, a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from San Diego State University, and an Associate's Degree in General Major from Imperial Valley College.

Dr. Garcia is committed to making a difference for her students and her community and serves on carious community organizations. She is a board member for Justice For Our Neighbors, formerly the Live Your Dream Scholarship Coordinator for SI El Centro and member of Imperial Valley Breakfast Rotary. She was honored as one of the 56th California Assembly District's "2018 Woman of the Year".
