02. THE LONELY CHOLITA
Independent work
La Paz - Bolivia 2020
It’s interesting how a simple door can become such a familiar sight in a city. In La Paz, there are many doors that look just like the one I describe. I’ve walked past them countless times in different neighborhoods, and they always evoke a sense of home for me. With their unpainted surfaces, graffiti, and cracked walls, they tell a story of a city that’s rough around the edges but full of character. The steel door with a handmade number, the typical gas meter, and electricity boxes are all familiar fixtures. Whenever I think of something that represents La Paz’s daily life, the image of that same door immediately comes to mind.

Paz - Bolivia 2020
The city center of La Paz is known for its stunning Republican facades, which are predominantly concentrated around the government palace and Max Paredes district, which is famous for its many markets. These buildings, mostly antique houses, have been modified to adapt to new functions, particularly as stores. Walking through the streets of La Paz, it’s common to see these old buildings in daily life. You can admire their intricate details, like the materials used and traces of old paint, and appreciate how they were designed from the inside for optimal distribution. Despite their modifications, each building still retains a sense of history and a unique story.

Prof. Joseph Altshuler
It’s true that spaces can be more than just physical elements. They can also be represented graphically through the use of colors, shapes, and patterns. By limiting space, creating pathways, and addressing specific elements, designers can create effective visual communication that goes beyond the physical realm.
Pijama Party in Tbh is a graphical representation of how to limit a space through SuperGraphics, creating a landscape, without adding physical elements.
Architecture software: Photoshop, Illustrator, Rhino, Autocad.

The Alisos de Amauta project by Xomatok, a Peruvian artist, served as a major inspiration for this graphical experimentation. The optical illusions created by his SuperGraphics were particularly impactful and influenced my choice of color schemes and perspectives.

The vibrancy and intricate patterns of the traditional dresses worn by indigenous women, also known as “cholitas,” serve as a major source of inspiration for me. These stunning ensembles are often adorned with exquisite jewelry and topped off with a distinct hat featuring symbols from the Andean culture. Architecture software: Photoshop, Illustrator
