The Sri Lankan School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (SLSPO) was started in 2004 After 10 years, management was successfully passed to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition The Jakarta School of Prosthetics and Orthotics was started in 2008 and management was successfully passed to the Indonesian government in 2018. The Phillipines School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (PSPO) was established in 2010. The PSPO conducts itself within the College of Allied Rehabilitation Sciences in the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay (UREM) After a decade, the UREM took over management of the PSPO
The Myanmar School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (MSPO) was founded in 2012 Due to civil conflict within the country, MSPO is still within the developmental stages Fortunately, students at MSPO have been able to complete some of their schooling at CSPO
Between the five schools, they have trained over 500 prosthetists and orthotists and delivered over 60,000 custom made prostheses or orthoses Harte’s influence on prosthetics and orthotics education has been indelible and rewarding
“I was supervising final exams and a student was presenting his patient, but several of the patients that came in were patients that I had recruited back in 1993,” said Harte “So it was nice to see those patients, now in their sixties, all nicely dressed, clean, and holding down a job while raising a family Which probably would not have happened if they didn't receive a comfortable prosthesis”

“Having plastics, feet, buildings, grinders, dust collectors, vacuum pumps, and other things doesn’t mean diddly if you don’t have the people,” said Harte “I am happy to announce that I will be retiring by the end of the year and I am delighted that the field is being taken over by capable people”
Harte’s retirement leaves a legacy which includes a sustainable foundation, infrastructure and blueprint for those who continue to build, fabricate, and nourish relationships to better orthotic and prosthetic education and care

The famous Stanford Marshmallow Experiment beautifully demonstrated how hope and patience correlate with long-term success Children who delayed gratification didn’t just succeed because of self-control, they succeeded because they believed that their patience would be rewarded That belief in the value of persistence is something we can nurture in clinical professionals too At institutions like West Point, grit not just grades is the best predictor of success.
The "Four Cs of Toughness" are:
Control Believing you can influence your environment
Commitment Staying focused through difficulties
Challenge Seeing obstacles as opportunities
Confidence Trusting in your mission and skills
Together, these create a foundation of inner strength that supports bold and creative contributions to the healthcare field
Designing a Curriculum for Growth and Fulfillment
We’re at an exciting turning point: designing career development programs that align with clinicians’ evolving aspirations Just like any profession, clinicians grow through stages from eager followers to expert specialists, from collaborative peers to inspiring leaders Each stage brings opportunities to gain new skills and deepen their impact
Let’s celebrate this journey:
Stage 1: Exploring values and passions
Stage 2: Thriving as collaborative teammates
Stage 3: Teaching and mentoring to solidify knowledge
Stage 4: Leading departments and setting team goals
Stage 5: Influencing across departments
Stage 6: Leading with vision and coordination
When clinicians were asked what skills they wanted to grow, they listed topics like business development, leadership, innovation, and digital tools an exciting indicator of how deeply they care about broadening their influence. Many of these skills aren’t traditionally taught in clinical programs, but they are absolutely teachable and essential They reflect the hunger to lead, grow, and shape the future of healthcare
Interestingly, when asked what skills new clinicians need versus what current leaders feel confident teaching, a clear growth opportunity emerged.

Engineering management, with its blend of problemsolving, planning, and innovation, provides an ideal model It’s not about theoretical knowledge it's about actionable skills like organizing teams, managing resources, innovating processes, and leading with purpose These are exactly the competencies clinicians want to develop
A survey of professional clinicians highlighted their top training priorities:
Leadership practice (communication, skills, traits)
Innovation management (decision-making, implementation)
Financial planning (budgeting, cash flow)
Project management (tools, prioritization)
Marketing and referrals (strategy, messaging)
Whenasked“Whatclassesdoyouneedtoday?”
Responsesincluded: marketdevelopment referralbuilding leadership decision-making innovation
Figure: 1 Skill Clinicians wanted to develop today.
These priorities echo a growing excitement about making a broader impact, one that extends beyond individual patient outcomes to shaping whole systems and communities.
We need to address what creates the greatest anxietyfor clinicians.

For clinicians working with patients
Make sure every patient understands all available options what devices exist, how much they cost, and what insurance will cover so they can choose the solution that truly fits their life
For prosthetists and care teams
Don’t default to the “latest” or the “simplest” tech help each patient find the assistive solution that’s most appropriate for their abilities, routines, and goals
For both patients and employees
Whether you’re coaching a new team member or mentoring a patient, reinforce their confidence: encourage them to set big goals, try new things, and know that it’s okay to pivot when something doesn’t fit.
For organizational decision-makers
Prioritize resources that boost a person’s functional autonomy because the real payoff isn’t just dollars saved, but fuller participation, dignity, and quality of life.
For managers and leaders
When leading staff, define clear outcomes but give your team the authority to choose their own path Let them make (and recover from) mistakes this is how they grow
