By Eagle Editorial Committee The Eagle Editorial Committee recently conducted a survey of Landings residents to determine the current level of readership, content mix, and the impact of advertising for the Eagle. The survey was emailed to all residents with a current email address. The response to the survey has been fabulous with 238 responses received to date. Each respondent will be receiving a coupon for a free ice cream at Abel’s Ice Cream located at 1886 Stickney Point Rd in Southbridge Plaza. Here is an overview of the survey results:

Nearly 3/4ths of the responding residents said they “Always” read (72%) the Landings Eagle. Additionally, another 20.5% read 7-11 issues of the monthly paper. Those are very impressive readership numbers. The majority of people read the print version of the Eagle with 83.7% only reading the print version while another 13% read both the print and online version. The percent of residents reading “only” the online version is 3.3%. In addition to the respondent of the survey, there is a significant amount of pass-along readership of the paper. The majority of the respondents (70.3%) share their copy of the Eagle with another person in their household. The end result is readership of the eagle is well over 50% of its total distribution. This is a great piece of data for advertisers.

Content is obviously the key to any successful publication. It is important to meet the informational needs of the readers. Thus, we asked Eagle readers to rank the types of stories they like to read the most. As anticipated, survey respondents most preferred stories (8.1 out of 10) reporting on matters impacting life at The Landings. Similarly, the revitalization of The Landings Shopping Center has made an impact on Eagle readers as this topic was second with a 7.7 ranking. The LMA President’s report was tied for third along with articles on “Things to do in the area” with a 7.1 ranking. The least favorite types of articles based on the overall rankings were “Lighter articles (jokes, recipes, etc.) with a 5.6 ranking and “Racquet Club Report” with a 5.9 ranking. Still positive results, overall. Readers also had suggestions for the types of stories they want more of. At the top of the list was “Regular articles of general interest to The Landings” with a 3.9 rating (out of 5.0). Second, was “More articles about the greater Sarasota area” with a 3.6 ranking. Third, was ”More stories on Landings’ residents.” Again, “More lighter articles (recipes, jokes, etc.) came in last with a 2.5 ranking. Even though it came in last, this type of content still had a good readership and “more of” score. The survey also provided respondents with a chance to submit topics that would have interest. Here is an overview of some of those suggestions: book recommendations, restaurant reviews, history of The Landings, travel articles from residents, more letters to the editor, and an open forum for residents to discuss how regulations, environmental issues, and growth of the area impacts life in The Landings.

Advertisers help underwrite the cost of the Eagle. It is important to support the businesses supporting us. Based on the survey results, that is exactly what is happening. A whopping 90% answered “yes” when asked if they patronize the advertisers in the Eagle. That is fantastic. Now, if you would mention the Eagle when patronizing these businesses, that would let them know their advertising is working and encourage their future support of the paper. One question in the reader survey was about the future inclusion of coupons in the Eagle. Of the 162 responses to this question, 146 or 90% answered “yes” to the idea of coupons. We will begin talking to local merchants about this opportunity. Several respondents suggested the introduction of a classified section to the paper so residents can advertise belongings they would like to sell.

You will see the results of this hard work in future issues of the Eagle. Also, all respondents to the survey will be sent a coupon for their free ice cream at Abel’s, soon.
