LP bets dominate Siquijor polls
SIQUIJOR, (PIA) -- Local and national Liberal Party (LP) bets dominated in majority of the electoral positions here from presidential down to Sangguniang Bayan members. Neophyte congressional bet Fiscal Ramon Antonio Vicente (RAV) Rocamora won with 22,125 votes over his rivals, namely: incumbent representative of the lone district of Siquijor, Congresswoman Marie Anne Pernes with 18,216 votes, Atty. Orlando A. Fua, Jr., former congressman and governor, 9,695 and former vicegovernor, Atty. Carl Ganhinhin, 4,439 votes. Now on his second
term, Governor Zaldy “Jecoy” Villa won an insurmountable lead for the gubernatorial race with 31,708 votes. H e w a s f o l l o w e d b y A t t y. Orlando Fua, former congressman and governor with 15,481 votes; incumbent Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Clare B. Lucero, 3,888; Armin Demetillo, 1,471 and Jerry Miraflor with 279 votes. Siquijor town incumbent mayor Mei Ling Quezon won the slot for vice-governor with 26,135 votes; followed by Bryan Pernes, 14,809 votes. Former SP Arturo Pacatang
has 8,026 votes; Galileo Jumawan got 1,140 and James Serencio 785 votes. The new board members in the first district are Cyrus Olpoc, 14,540 votes; Leonardo Lingcay, 13,872 and Darlyn Honrubia, 13,208 votes. In the second district winning candidates are Atty. Dindo Tumala, 13,128 votes; Noel Monte, 9,618 votes and Jaime Valesco, 7,861 votes. Except for Lazi town, all five winning mayors and vice

Comelec: Election in Siquijor peaceful Election in Siquijor peaceful SIQUIJOR, May 12 (PIA) -- Election in Siquijor province ran smoothly from the time the polling precincts opened until voting ended, according to Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and the Philippine National Police here. As of 7:00 a.m of May 9, all 135 polling centers here were activated based on the quantum GIS of the PNP-Siquijor Provl Election Monitoring Action Center
(PEMAC). Sector Commander Election Assistant Gene Villarin of the Provincial COMELEC said some minor glitches in the operation of Vote Counting Machines (VCMs) were reported but with the contingency machines, this was settled. “So far, walay napostpone, (so far, nothing was postponed),” Villarin said of the conduct of election. Enrique Belcina for District 2 (Lazi, San Juan and Maria towns) said the conduct of election was generally peaceful. Except for some precincts in Lazi town where casting of votes were delayed due to Vote Counting Machine (VCM) problems, all other precincts in the five municipalities of Siquijor, Lazi, Maria, San Juan and Enrique Villanueva went well until the closing of polling precincts and the counting of votes. DTI holds SME Roving Academy for Larena woodcraft makers
Seminar on “Green Te c h n o l o g y i n F u r n i t u r e Manufacturing” under the SMERA (SME Roving Academy) and Negosyo Center conducted by the local office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) at the FaboRito’s Place, Cangbagsa, Larena, Siquijor. The seminar focused on the “green practices” the furniture makers should undertake to mitigate the climate change, i.e., using renewable energy, sourcing of raw materials from sustainable sources, waste minimization, conformance to health and safety standards, among others. Participants are members of the Larena Woodcraft Makers Association (LAWOMA) and other furniture makers coming from other towns. Dr. Expedita O. NFA-7: Rice stocks in CV sufficient amid drought
CEBU, May 19 (PIA) – There is enough supply of rice in Central Visayas despite the present drought sharply hitting the agricultural sector, assured the National Food Authority (NFA-7) here. NFA-7 Assistant Regional Director Nestor Rey Alcoseba said the country imported 750,000 metric tons of rice, which the initial stocks arrived in November last year. “Of the total figure, 2.18 million bags are allocated for Central Visayas,” said Alcoseba, adding that one metric ton is equivalent to 20 bags at 50 kilos per bag. He said the rice importation was done in anticipation of the El Niño where rice production was expected to suffer. Though El Niño did not impact much on Central Visayas rice production, Alcoseba said the region is not a producer but more of an importer. Based on news reports, rice crop areas in the country were hit the hardest by the drought due to the El Niño. Francisco Sopsop, chief of the Planning Division of Department of Agriculture (DA-7), agreed that rice production in the region is not sufficient for its own consumption and that the region is dependent on rice imports to supply the consumption needs of the people in Central Visayas. Alcoseba said the importation volume of 750,000 metric tons is only good for 62 days without the participation of commercial importers; meaning, if only NFA is the one supplying the rice consumption needs of the country. As it is, private importers are also getting rice abroad at an estimated 300,000 metric tons, said Alcoseba. According to the NFA-7 official, it cannot be determined yet if the importation volume is enough for this year with the continuing drought as the Inter-Agency on Food Security Committee on Rice meets every quarter to discuss on updates. The NFA is a member of the committee. “It is very important that we know the production data from the DA and the PSA to be able to calculate the shortage and how much we are going to import,” said Alcoseba. Alcoseba said what is important is that we have beefed up rice stocks and that there are no fears of price hike in rice amid the El Niño. As this developed, Sopsop said the goal of rice self-sufficiency for the country is not yet attainable in the near future with the devastation caused by El Niño and an upcoming threat of La Niña. Cyrus Vincent Calibo also from LP won the vice-mayor seat. Winning candidates for the Sangguniang members are Jucito Gom-os, Clyde Omictin, Dindo Larot, Danilo Achay, Carl de la Pena, Sherwyn Mark Morales, Cle Bern Paglinawan and Bartolome Monte. Larena has 10,393 voting population from its 14,207 total population in the 23 barangays. Enrique Villanueva winners are incumbent mayor, Gerold Paling with 2,566 votes for mayor; i n c u m b e n t v i c e - m a y o r, L e o n a r d o Paculba, 2,526 votes for vice mayor. The town’s voting population is 10,079 out of the 14,704 population. The second highest in voting population in the province is Lazi with 14,279 out of 22,340 total population in the 18 barangays. Winning candidates are James Monte and Earl Aljas for Mayor and Vice-Mayor respectively. Both are independent bets. Sangguniang Bayan members are Bimbo Arcamo, Shirley Ligutom, Rommel Dimagnaong, Rose Mae Dalaygon, Maribel Ligutom, Sheldone Saliot, Remegio Sierras and Gary Tumapon. Finally, Siquijor town has the highest number of voting population of 19,364 out of its 27,721 total population based on 2010 Census. The town’s winning candidates are: Richard Quezon for Mayor; Joy Lopes de Andrade, Vice Mayor, and Jimmy Duhaylungsod, Romnick Angas, Jim Joe Ambalong, Artemio Alvarico, Teodoro Jumawan, Jr., Dionisio Capitan, Rodolfo Pactolin and Jayson Dawami forSangguniang Bayan members. The province, with its six municipalities has a voter’s turnout in of 89.86% with 61,999 total number of voters who actually voted out of the total registered voters of 68,988 in the 135 Siquijor polling centers.
