Junior Class and Parents: Graduation Set up, Clean Up

The juniors and their parents are an integral part of graduation. Families of juniors, please let the graduation comittee know how you will help (joan@ischool.org). Along with prep and clean up from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, students will help with programs and parking; parents help direct traffic. Immediately following the ceremony, all juniors and parents are expected to help with the break down. It goes by fast if we have a lot of help! Snacks and water will be provided.

A Call for Flowers & Foliage for Graduation

The graduation committee is seeking donations of tropical flowers and foliage for Saturday’s graduation ceremony. We especially need A LOT OF PLUMERIA BLOSSOMS. The committee would like everything dropped off by June 13, Friday at 3 p.m. at the Wilcox Gym. Middle School Water Day Tomorrow

The middle school Student Council has organized Water Day on campus. Two huge water slides and an obstacle course highlight the day. Breakfast snacks will be provided, a special movie will be shown and lunch will be provided by Student Council. Students should come to school in school clothes and bring bathing suits, two towels, sun block, a change of clothing, goggles and a water bottle. Please mark your belongings and bring them in a bag. Students will also be able to sign their Island School T-shirts if they bring one. Parents should pick their children up at school by 1 p.m. Letters about Water Day were sent home to parents with slips to sign indicating your child’s attendance. JUMP START Workshop Open to All Families

JUMP START is a workshop that prepares parents with children entering grades 3 through 6 to be successful at helping their children with homework. The focus will be on sharing best practices, learning to recognize strengths and weaknesses, and developing homework systems that build successful parent/student relationships. Open to all families on Kaua‘i, the sessions will be shaped in part by the needs of those in attendance. JUMP START will be held in the Main Hall at Island School on July 28, 29 and August 4 and 5, 3-5:30 p.m. Sessions one and three are parents only; in sessions two and four children are encouraged to attend. This workshop is limited to 10 parents. Tuition is $125. Please contact Elizabeth Scamahorn at elizabeth@ ischool.org to determine if this workshop will be right for you or to be placed on a future workshop list.

MS ART – Kamal Salibi, owner of Da Life Outdoor Gear, sponsored an art contest in our middle school. Da Life Outdoor Gear is a retail store located on Kalapaki Beach. Mr. Salibi was looking for student artwork to decorate a display case for one of his store’s products — a micro-fiber beach towel. The winning artwork was selected by Salibi, his business partner, and a professional designer. The student art listed below, which featured Kaua‘i scenes, were selected to adorn the display case. PRE-K – The Pre-K will be participating in the Amazing Race Camp, today starting at 5:30 p.m. They will form teams with their families and take off to find their route challenges. Some of these challenges include a balloon pop, Junk in the Trunk and a marshmallow launch. They will also be challenged with a road block and detour. SOCIAL STUDIES – Students of Mr. Bray’s World Crises class, Natalia Smith ‘14, and Carlei Rutt ‘15, gave a panel presentation on the current crises in Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Haiti, Myanmar, and the Central African Republic. Mr. Bray moderated the panel presentation and then took questions for the students from the audience.

Dr. Kozak crushes a 55-gallon metal drum today between the Wilcox Gym and the Elementary Garden. He accomplished this feat by boiling water inside the drum, sealing it and cooling it off with ice and hose water.

ALUMNAE ACHIEVEMENTS – Stephanie Steuri ‘11, was crowned Miss Hawai‘i 2014 last Saturday during the 68th annual scholarship pageant at Honolulu. Classified Ads YMCA KAUA‘I WARRIORS VOLLEYBALL CLUB FUNDRAISER: The club was founded in November, 2013 and is the only under-13 boys volleyball club on the island. This past Memorial Day weekend, the club competed in a tournament in Waimea against clubs from O‘ahu, Maui and the Big Island. Out of 18 teams, the YMCA Kaua‘i Warriors placed sixth. Island School 7th graders Kaikea Ahuna and Kahea Kamalani are among the players going to the Nationals in Houston, Texas. Before flying to Houston, the club will do one more fundraiser on Sunday, June 15 at the Concert in the Park event in Princeville. The club will sell baked goods and the players will offer to teach other kids how to play. Donations can be made at www. kauaiwarriorsvolleyball.com.

Summertime at Island School

Summer at Island School is a busy time. Most of the campus is rented out to the Kaua‘i Academy of Creative Arts, but several other organizations are using our beautiful facility. Kamehaheha Schools, Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre, the NBC Basketball Clinic and others will use the Frear, the Wilcox Gymnasium and several classrooms. Several Island School sponsored summer programs will also begin soon. Depart Island School Morning Circle at Poipu Beach Park Beach Activities or Playground Lunch Served (Times differ per grade level) Clean Up, Beach & Pavilion Sweep, Lost & Found Dismissal

Transportation: All teachers will ride the bus with their classes otherwise they need to provide their own transportation back to school or leave from beach. Cristy and Pre K will ride on the small IS bus. Everyone else will ride on one of the 3 big buses with their classes unless driving to Poipu. Please let me know whether or not you are driving your own car. Morning Circle: Our last morning circle of the school year will be held at the beach. We will meet at 8:45 a.m. outside the large pavilion. Emergency Supplies: First aid kit will be kept in the pavilion. Belongings: Each class will have a designated area for their belongings. This will help to minimize lost & found. Parent Volunteers: Please invite any parents that are willing to volunteer with supervision, lunch, and clean up. Supervision: PK-5 teachers remain with their classes throughout the day. All students must observe the buddy system. Teachers should sound a whistle every half hour for buddy checks. Teachers should bring whistles and a class list. Morning Snack: Students will need to provide their own morning snack. Lunch: Menu: Pepperoni & Cheese pizza, oranges, carrot sticks, cookies, lemonade, and water. Lunch Schedule: 11:15 – 11:25 PK-1 11:25 – 11:35 2- 3 11:35 – 11:45 4-5 Clean Up: Please begin clean up at 12:00 p.m. Please have students gather lost and found items at Large Pavilion stage. Do Drop In Students: Students attending “Do Drop In” will be transported back to school via the Island School bus. Teachers needing a ride will go on this bus too! Students attending “Do Drop Inn” need to let Mr. Dean know in advance. Dismissal: Students will be dismissed from Poipu Beach Park (Large Pavilion) at 12:30 p.m. Students must check out with teachers before leaving with parents.

Saturday, July 5th 7:00 AM—9:00 AM Check-in at the Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park Independence Day Fireworks take a toll on our captivating Hanalei Bay. Please join us in removing the harmful and unsightly Fireworks litter the following morning. We clean the beautiful Hanalei Bay Beach from the Hanalei Pier, Hanalei Pavilion, Pinetrees and Grandpas. Bring gloves, shovel, hat & sunscreen. Latex gloves, garbage bags and light refreshments are provided. Participants who register at the event may win a prize.
