Attention Juniors: Gannon Loomis Memorial Scholarship Applications Due Tomorrow, May 23

Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. One $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to be applied toward tuition at Island School for the awardee’s senior year. The scholarship recipient will be announced at the graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 14.

Freshman Pancake Fundraiser This Saturday, Entertainment Provided by Kalaheo Elementary Band

The 9th grade class is having a pancake breakfast to accumulate overall class funds and raise money for their future senior class trip - this Saturday, May 24, 7-10 a.m. in the Main Hall. The breakfast will consist of two pancakes, fruit salad, choice of meat with coffee or juice. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased from freshman students in advance or at the door during the event. Nine members of the Kalaheo Elementary School Band will be performing from 8:15 to 9 a.m.

Summer Help Wanted

Looking for adult volunteers and hardy students for summer fence-line cleanup. Will schedule the group for weekday or weekend work depending on who and how many are available. Need at least 4 people with equipment skills and lots of enthusiasm for clearing our fence-line of unwanted tree growth, pig control enhancement under fence, and clearing of the walking path under the ironwood trees. Kaua‘i Concert Association needs volunteers to be in charge of the Zero Waste bins during the Red Clay Jazz Festival on June 28. See the show for free while making sure patrons put trash and recyclables in the right bins. If interested, contact Jason Blake (jblakekauai@gmail.com).

School Lunch Program Changes Starting June 2

Lanakila Kitchen, located in Lawa‘i, has been contracted to service Island School with school lunches. We will continue to include a salad bar option augmented with vegetables from our community garden. This new lunch program starts Monday, June 2 and will run through Thursday, June 12. Pizza will still be served on Friday, June 6. The purpose of the change is to keep costs under control while offering tasty meals. Also, students on our school lunch plan taking field trips will be supplied with a brown-bag lunch.

Kindergartners Mia Javellana and Hobey King wear their completed Job’s tears (pu‘ohe‘ohe) lei. This project began with the Kindergarten class picking, counting and stringing 100 Job’s tears seeds in Kumu Kauka’s Hawaiian Studies class.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION – Last Friday and today, Ms. Mariko’s 7th grade girls PE class ran to the YMCA to swim and ran back to campus. They are also finishing up end of the year fitness testing. SPANISH – Spanish III students had the opportunity to attend breakfast or lunch — based on which period they were in — and practice speaking Spanish at Mariachi’s Restaurant in Nawiliwili. The servers, most of them from Mexico, were notified ahead of time to speak only Spanish to the students and they gladly obliged. NA PUA KEIKI –The Pre-K class visited Kamokila Hawaiian Village last Wednesday. They toured the grounds — learning about various hale, wildlife and traditions of the village. At right, the class is pictured singing and dancing with Kumu Iliama.

Send in $20 to Peggy (payable to Island School) HS STUDENT GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS – There has been a change of plans regarding Student Government elections. The election speeches will be held on Tuesday, May 27, during the general morning meeting. This is for the executive positions: president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. 8th graders will attend and seniors are excused from this meeting. Class Council elections are next week Friday, May 30, during class morning meetings. MS BOYS BASKETBALL – A.J. Ort ‘16, is holding basketball practices/workshops every Monday and Wednesday, 3 to 4:15 p.m. for 5th to 7th grade boys until the end of the school year either in Wilcox Gym or the basketball court behind the ‘Ohi‘a

classroom. A.J. is gauging how many Island School boys are interested in playing in a community basketball league team in the upcoming winter. If interest is high, his goal is to have a junior varsity boys basketball team by the 2015-2016 school year. FOURTH GRADE – The 4th grade went to Salt Pond last week Friday to do a reef walk and identify and examine the various marine animals they have been learning about in class. Classified Ads KAPA‘A ART WALK DRAWING: Ms. Mariko’s under-14 girls soccer team is going to O‘ahu for a tournament on July. IS students Honey Chandler ‘19, Soleil Errico ‘19, and Brianna Binder ‘18, are on the team. They are doing a drawing at the Kapa‘a Art Walk on June 7 for some awesome prizes, which include a Kaua‘i ATV waterfall tour, a Koloa Zipline tour, and a pair of Oakley sunglasses. Tickets are $5 a donation and $20 for 5 tickets. If you would like to purchase a drawing ticket, contact mariko@ischool.org. The soccer team will also be selling tickets at the art walk on June 7. AUDITIONS FOR “SHREK THE MUSICAL”: Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre announces the Hawai‘i premiere of “Shrek the Musical.” Auditions will begin June 19 and run for one week at Island School.
