INSTRUCTOR GUIDE for CASE STUDIES Overview The case studies can be used as a teaching tool when Blueprint for Greening Affordable Housing is used in an educational context. We’ve developed a case study worksheet that students can use to capture information in the cases that reflects the content from the chapters. The first section of the worksheet collects basic information about the case study housing development. Subsequent sections ask students to look for and describe a sequence of strategies and methods used to implement green building, such as integrated design, location and site development, energy efficiency and renewable energy, water conservation, healthy housing measures, and materials. Note that cases vary in the inclusion of and level of detail provided about various elements, and instructors should alert students to this and establish norms for how to address information gaps: “Make a guess”, “Use your judgement”, “Note the lack of information”, etc. Suggested Methods for Use The case studies can be used to encourage individual reflection and reinforcement of the concepts presented in class and to provide a template for a case report assignment. They also work well as a basis for a simple group project by assigning a small group of students to a specific case and having them work independently initially but then join forces to discuss the case and plan a short presentation. We offer some additional tips for applying these methods in a virtual learning environment. Method 1: Individual Students Students work independently and select a case that interests them. The worksheet can be used to gather information as the course material is presented and students are directed to look through their case for corresponding elements. At the conclusion of the course presentations by the instructor, students can be asked to write a short report describing their case, using the sections of the worksheet as a guide to the report outline. Virtual teaching tip: Use the worksheet as a content acquisition check. At the end of a lecture segment, allow 10 -15 minutes for processing. Give students 5 minutes of muted work-alone time to look at their case and fill in the corresponding section of the worksheet. Next, assign students randomly to breakout groups to share what they found in their cases for 5 – 10 minutes. Students can use the chat function for questions or clarifications.
