At the heart of Island 171 are the winning and shortlisted entries for the fourth Island Nonfiction Prize, supported by the Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund. These five superb essays point to the value of this prize in unearthing and supporting some of the finest voices – both emerging and established – writing in Australia today. The diversity of subject matter and approach provide a snapshot of the issues troubling our culture as we emerge from the lockdown years into a more uncertain, more frightening world and an ever-more-contested future.
We’re also delighted to present an essay from Yulan Jack, who won the Margaret Scott Tasmanian Young Writer’s Fellowship in the 2022 Tasmanian Literary Awards, which included mentoring and publication by Island.
Plus 12 new poems, five new short stories (one in graphic form) and arts features.
