TheFriendsofStMary’sHospitalCharityhascomethoroughsome turbulenttimesinthelastfewyears,butthegoodnewsisthatthey havesurvivedtotellthetale.

Inspiteofbeingasmalleroperationwithjusttheshopontheground floorfoyer,theyhavemadeitto2023inahealthystateandare continuingtosupportandsupplementtheexcellentserviceatthe Island’sNHSTrust,withtheirmissiontoraisemoneytoprovide equipmentandfacilitiestohelpmaketheexperiencebetterforpatients andstaff.

LesleyMyland,ChairofTrusteesofFriendsofSt Mary’sHospital,said“thankyoutothosewho helpeduswiththeirkinddonationsandfundraising efforts,andathankyoutootothosestaff, volunteersandtrusteeswhohaveworkedsohardto keeptheretailserviceandtheCharitygoingin difficulttimes.We shouldalsothank thestaffatSt Mary’swhohave goneoutoftheir waytouseour shopandkeepus profitableenough tochannelfunds totheCharity.

Wewereabletoprovide£49,000worthofequipmentlast yearincludingnewwheelchairsatboththemainandnorth receptiondesksforvolunteerstousewhensupporting visitorstothetrustwhomayhavemobilityproblems.We wereabletosupplykeyrapidresponseequipmentknownas anEMMAdevicetotherapidresponsekitthatisheldby theon-callODPteamandfinallywewereabletosupply resourcessuchasgames,booksandsensorytoysforthePaediatricsOccupationalTherapy Department.Weare alsoveryexcitedabout fundingaveryspecial immersivetraining experienceinthenew ambulancecentre.This isfocusedon improvingimmediate careontheIslandto savelivesincritical situationsbothfor individualsandthose involvedinamajor incident”.

ThegovernmentissettointroducenewrulessayingthatallpetcatsintheUKmustbe microchippedbythetimetheyare20weeksold-theequivalentoffivemonths. Itwillmeanlostorstraypetcatsaremorelikelytobereunitedwiththeirownersand returnedhomesafely.

Thechangecomesafterpeoplewereinvitedtogiveevidenceanddiscussthematter, with99%ofpeoplegivingtheirsupportforthemeasure.Whenalostpetisfound,the microchipcanbescanned,anditwillbringuptheowner'sdetailsfromadatabase.The vetoragencywhohasthelostpetwillthenbeabletocontacttheownersandorganise forittobereturnedorcollected.Ownersfoundnottohavemicrochippedtheircatwill have21daystohaveoneimplantedorcouldfaceafineofupto£500.

Wouldyouconsiderlearninganewskillin2023to provideagreatservicetoyourcommunity?TheIW CommunityBusPartnership(IWCBP)isalways lookingfornewvolunteerstodriveourlocal communitybuses.Youwillbetaughttodriveabus andgetaPassengerCarryingVehicle(PCV)Licence; allyourtrainingandassociatedcostsarecovered.The IWCBPcurrentlycarriesaround35,000passengers peryear,butwewouldliketoextendourservice.Mostvolunteersdriveonceaweek,but youcandomoreorless,dependinguponyouravailability.Allyouneedisacleancar drivinglicence.Ifyouareinterested,pleasecontactme.

RECYCLING&HOMEWASTEBINS–ADDITIONALWASTEBINS

Ioftenhearcommentsfromresidentsabouttheirwastebinsbeingtoosmalltotakeall theirwaste.Unfortunately,sometimesrecyclablewasteisputintotheirblacknonrecyclablewastebinswhichthenquicklyfillup.TherationalebehindtheIWCouncil’s wastecollectionpolicyistorecycleasmuchaspossibletodivertitfromgoinginto landfillwhichcostsmoneyandisbadfortheenvironment.

TWMWildlifeandNatureIsleofWightis alocalgroupformedbyTrampWoodsand WarrenMasonandtheyarecurrently workingonmanylocalprojects,from holdingwildlifephotographysessionsfor thosewhoneedhelpinunderstandingand settinguptheircameras,totipsandtricks intogettingbetterphotosofthewildlifeon theisland.Thesesessionsarepublished throughtheirFacebookgroupandhave becomeverypopularandarebeingenjoyed bymany.

TheTrampwas recentlyaskedbythe Hampshire&IOW WildlifeTrusttodoa talkforthem, showinganarrayof hispicturesplus talkingaboutrelevant stories.Theevening wasasuccessthat TWMWildlifeand NatureIsleofWight arenowsettingup theirowntalksabout photographyand tellingtheirstories. Theseeventscanbe heldinvenuesor broughtdirecttoyou! AsTrustee’sofShanklinTheatreandthe developingPerformingArtsCentre,wewere delightedtoreceiveafinancialboostfrom theSandownMasonicLodgeinearlyApril. Thedonationchequewas presentedbytheWorshipful Master-MrGaryTurner. Thesemuch-neededfunds willhelpgotowardsthe upkeepandinvestmentof theCentre.Wesincerely thanktheSandownLodge fortheirdonation.

TheIWCouncilhave becomeawareofsome recentnewscoverage regardingthepotential banningofcyclistsalong theRevetmentbetween

ShanklinandSandown.Aworkinggroup hasbeenestablishedbetweentheIW Councilandthetownandparishcouncilsof Lake,Sandown&Shanklin.Thisworking grouphasbeensetuptolookatarangeof improvementsthatcouldbemadetothe Revetmenttoallowforittobeenjoyedsafely byallusers,includingcyclists.Discussions arebeingheldwiththeworkinggroupon thebestwaytoreconcileanypedestrianand cyclistconcerns.TheIWCouncildoesnot supportbanningcyclistsfromusingthe Revetmentandwillnotbeimplementinga cyclingban.Usersareremindedthatthe revetmentisprimarilyacoastaldefencethat hasthecommunitybenefitofapromenade toprovideaccesstothebeachesand commercialactivities.Asanalternative walking,cycleandrunningroutethatlinks theBaycommunities,wewouldadviseall userstobeawareofeachotherandshow considerationwhentravellingalongthe promenadeandtoremainawarethatrock fallscanoccuratanytime.

Asweheadintothesummermonths,like you,I’mlookingforwardtogettingoutand aboutmoreandtobeabletoenjoyallthat ourbeautifulislandhastooffer.Don’tforget theWalkingFestivalthismonth,13th to21st May,including,forthemoreenergetic amongstus,WalktheWightinaidofthe MountbattenHospiceonSunday14th May.

Irecentlyattendedanexhibitionofthe SupportingYoungMindsprojectwhich involvedseveralofourSandownyoung people.TheprojectisbeingledbyArtswork incollaborationwithmanyisland organisationsandseekstoimprovethe mentalhealthandwellbeingofouryoung people.TheSandownelementsawthe productionofaninspiringandthought provokingfilmcalled“DoSomething Different”andI’mincrediblyproudoftheir achievements.InNewport,theyoungpeople workedwithlocalartiststocreatehand paintedmuralsaroundthetowntaking inspirationfromthelocalenvironment, supportingourBiospherestatus.Ithinkthis issomethingthatwecouldexplorefor Sandownandfitswithsuggestionsput forwardtomebyresidents,workingwith localbusinessestosmartenupourHigh Street.

Theissueofroadsafety,especiallyaround ourschools,wasraisedatoneofmy councillorsurgeries.Iwouldurgemotorists totakeextracareatzebracrossings, especiallyatschoolstartandfinishtimes. I’mlookingatprioritiesfortheyearandI wouldwelcomeyourthoughtsasit’syour prioritiesthatmatter.Issuessuchas planningenforcement,youthactivities, trafficmanagement,roadsafety, regeneratingtheHighStreet,beachsafety andallotmentsaresomeoftheareasto consider.PleasecometotheAGMand voiceyourconcernsasit’syou,our residents,thatwe’reheretolistentoand serve.

Despitemybesteffortsitwouldseemthat theresidentsofYaverlandEstatewillhave toendureanother“summerofdiscontent” withindiscriminateparkingintheroads nearesttothebeach.However,Iamassured thattheproposedmeasureswillbe consideredaspartoftheIslandRoads District4reviewlaterthisyear.Iwill continuetofightfortheimplementationof parkingrestrictionsandtherewillbea publicconsultationaspartofthisprocess.
