Matriculation Tax Exemption Passed (see p 48)

DEAR ISLANDER Dear Islander, Having recently visited the two classic regattas in Alcudia and Mahon, my interest and admiration for these beautiful yachts just grows and grows. They are truly special, and the other aspect of these regattas which I like is the atmosphere surrounding these events. It’s super friendly, but still very competitive on the water. Now the intense summer heat has left us, we approach the busy Boat Show and refit season with what I would describe as an air of cautious optimism for the nautical sector. With the impending news of the exemption of matriculation tax for charter vessels over 15 metres and a general sense that the worldwide economic crisis is just showing signs of improvement, I am hearing many more upbeat conversations than for quite some time. There are reportedly full yards for the winter and many larger boats just itching to come to Palma when the final matriculation tax exemption date is announced. This is expected to be around the 20th October, when the exemption will become law. In practice, this will mean that the yachts, or more accurately the companies which own these yachts, will be able to market their 2014 charters as being exempt of the matriculation tax, providing that the yachts meet the required conditions. There are many specialist companies who can help with the required advice, if in any doubt. I have just returned from the Southampton Boat Show where again, the mood was upbeat, with many boat builders including Sunseeker, Princess, Fairline, X- Yachts, J-Boats and Contest showing new models for the first time. Business was reportedly brisk although the British weather had returned to its normal mode for autumn with gales and horizontal rain for most of the two days I was there. By the time you read this issue, we will have been at The Monaco Yacht Show and the Barcelona Boat Show, the reports of which will be in our November edition. Both of these shows are expected to follow the optimistic theme, let’s hope that is the case. Yours truly will be competing in the Flying 15 Balearic Championships at Pollensa on the weekend of 4th – 6th October, a report will be included in the November issue! Early October also sees the Oyster regatta in Palma once more with a fleet of 33 boats entered so far, a big increase on last year’s numbers, so there is still plenty sailing to be done before the sailing boots are put away! Fair winds! Simon Relph, Managing Editor The Islander Nautical Media S.L. Apt 144, Block 5 - Paseo Illetes, 9 Illetes, Calvia, 07178 Mallorca, Baleares, España M. VELA CLASICA MENORCA Also present was Cambria, a William Fife design from 1928, she is one of the only surviving yachts of the 23 metre class. She was originally built for Sir William Berry, a media mogul of his day, and owner of “Yachting World” magazine. She was restored to her former glory in order to compete in the 2001 America’s Cup jubilee regatta at Cowes. The prettiest Yacht, in my opinion of the whole fleet was “Chinook”, a 1916 Herreshoff design from the USA. As you can see from her photograph she is a wonderful example of this era, and is now owned by Graham Walker, a real stalwart of British yachting over the years, and a past competitor in many Admirals Cups, with his yacht “Indulgence”.

Finish line in Mahon Harbour X COPA DEL REY DE BARCOS DE EPOCA / TROFEO PANERAI This annual regatta which forms a part of a worldwide series of classic regattas was held for the 10th time at Club Maritimo de Mahon, Menorca. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the regatta and get out on the water for the opening day’s racing, which was a real privilege. Conditions, as can be seen from the photographs were just about perfect!

As you will see from the photographs, this was a stunning beauty parade of some of the prettiest yachts in the world, which are lovingly maintained by their owners and crew.

boats in the fleet were: Tuiga of Yacht Club de Monaco, Mariska from St Tropez, and Lady Anne representing RORC.

Our favourite, of course, was “ISLANDER”, a 17.2 mtr G.L Watson design!!!

The fleet included four of the 15 metre class yachts including the famous Hispania which was originally built in 1909, but restored by Fairlie yachts in the UK just 2005 after being found in a sorry state. The other three

29 REGATA ALMIRANTE CONDE DE BARCELONA

OBITUARY Anthony “Cappa” Hussey 1971 – 2013

Mariette ploughing upwind This annual regatta was held in the sparkling waters of Alcudia Bay from 21st to 25th August. The conditions were just about as perfect as it gets, for the 28 boats, with breezes of around 15 knots and clear blues skies each day. There was a wide range of boat sizes and designs on show, but the eye catcher was without doubt Mariette. She is 98 years old 32.28 mtrs in length and designed by Herreshoff in the USA. Her team were a pleasure to watch as they sailed her beautifully around the course, with seemingly little effort for such a complex yacht. The photographs you see on these pages give you an idea of her sheer beauty. Other boats of note, were Argyll, the 17.48 mtr Sparkman and Stephens design from 1948, now owned by the British actor Gryff Rhys Jones. Manitou, at 18.80 mtrs is another beauty and was owned

at one time by President J.F.Kennedy. She is an Olin Stephens design from 1937, and very similar to Enterprise an 18.20 mtr design, not surprisingly from Sparkman and Stephens in the USA. In the “Spirit of Tradition” class there was a wonderful looking boat Pas Encore, which is a Joubert design from 2005 but designed in the classic mould and performed magnificently for a boat of only 9.5 mtrs against the larger yachts. The Flying 15 class with 7 entries had some great racing amongst themselves and fit very nicely into a classic regatta, being a 60 years old plus design by Uffa Fox. All in all everyone had a great time both on and off the water, with tales of late night revelry to compliment the great sailing on the uncluttered waters of the Bay of Alcudia. Roll on next year’s event.

By Erica Lay Director – EL CREW CO On September 18th, it was planned that 10 tenders would take out a wreath in the Bay of Palma to say farewell to a sailing legend we knew as Cappa. What actually happened was a staggering TWENTY SIX tenders arrived plus a sail yacht, all spilling over with people, flowers, tributes and of course, rum, for a send-off of epic proportions. The boats convoyed from the old port out to sea, and as each marina was passed the sound of horns was deafeningly powerful as yachts small and large,

sail and power, paid their respects. Nobody was left without any doubt that this man was a legend as hairs stood on end and goose bumps spread across the city. This tribute was one of many as gatherings brought people together all over the world; Cappa touched hearts far and wide during his career and never left anyone without a lasting impression of his cheeky infectious smile, kindness, and ability to make everyone feel good. You will be missed Cappa. Sail on...

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE strategy. Half of the budget for Project Spring has been earmarked for the acceleration of 4G deployments, with the aim of reaching 90% population coverage in the group’s five main European markets – Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK - by 2017. Roger Horner - E3 Systems (+34) 971 404 208 info@e3s.com www.e3s.com Turf Wars in the Mobile Phone Industry During the last few weeks, we have seen some major moves in the mobile phone industry. Power struggles, moves to dominate the market, technology dominance – the focus is on increasing the number of subscribers and the average revenue per user (ARPU). We have seen Microsoft buy Nokia’s devices and services business for a lot of money, followed by Vodafone’s announcement of the sale of their 45% stake in Verizon to generate more money than God has. Vodafone then announced that they they intend to use a tiny amount of it, £6 billion in fact, to become the 4G LTE leader in Europe. Following on from that, Movistar let off a damp squib and announced that they plan to offer more for the same, to try and stem the loss of subscribers. And finally, to top it all Apple had to do something, and I am still trying to work out what was significant about their latest

announcement! Microsoft buys Nokia – not really a surprise The timing of Microsoft’s announcement was a surprise, but I think the deal to buy Nokia’s Devices & Services unit was inevitable once the initial partnership agreement had been signed. The deal is for €5.44 billion in cash, with the ailing device maker stating that “we believe this transaction is the best path forward for Nokia and shareholders”. Microsoft said that it “cannot risk having Google or Apple foreclose app innovation, integration, distribution or economics” in a presentation made to support its acquisition. In addition to the smartphone business, Microsoft will take on Nokia’s feature phone business, “as well as an industry-leading design team, operations including all Nokia Devices & Services production facilities, Devices & Services-related sales and marketing activities, and related support functions”. Microsoft has also agreed a 10-year license agreement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on “current Mobile Phone

products” with some limitations. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approvals. Vodafone clearly eyes 4G LTE leadership in Europe Vodafone’s sale of its 45% stake in Verizon Wireless for a staggering £84 billion (€100 billion) – the third-largest M&A deal in corporate history – will leave a £19.4 billion surplus for the UK-based mobile group once its shareholders have enjoyed a lucrative payday. However, not surprisingly, I hear the remaining Verizon shareholders think Verizon is paying too much. It is clear Vodafone intends to reinvest this windfall to shape the group’s strategy for many years to come. So how will the £84 billion be allocated? The allocation will include a mere £6 billion to invest in existing network services and operations. This £6 billion investment will take the form of ‘Project Spring’, a wide-ranging investment programme that will run over the next three years and accelerate the group’s existing ‘Vodafone 2015’

Vodafone is acutely aware that 4G success requires aggressive network rollouts to quickly achieve greater population coverage than competitors, and subsequently tie customers in to 12-24 month contract plans before its rivals – a strategy that underpinned Verizon’s successful 4G rollout in the US. As of Q3 2013, Vodafone is currently the dominant 4G player in Germany (with a 53% 4G market share), Spain (86%), Romania (51%) and Ireland (42%), and also has significant shares of the market in Italy (41%) and Greece (43%). But this additional investment should allow Vodafone to drive 4G adoption right across its European footprint and to differentiate its offering around 4G services. The group showed its intent in this area in early September with the launch of its 4G network in the UK, which offered customers inclusive Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile TV subscriptions to demonstrate the potential of the superfast network. 4G-LTE makes up just under 1% of Europe’s total connections in Q3 2013, and as such the region is trailing markets such as South Korea (45%) and the USA (20%) by some distance. However, we

expect the European 4G market to benefit greatly from Vodafone’s investment, with the resulting increase in competition boosting 4G penetration in the region (as a percentage of total connections) to around 18% by 2017. By this time Vodafone will be ahead of the pack with 22% of the group’s European connections on 4G. Movistar Spain then start to get radical Telefonica’s Movistar unleashed a series of pricing initiatives on Friday 13th September dubbed ‘Mas por lo mismo’ (more for the same price). They include the scrapping of 18-month post-paid contracts (except for those acquiring handsets using loyalty points), the expansion of voice and data limits on 4G without paying more than 3G prices (details still to be announced), starting to sell unlocked mobile phones so customers can use their purchased devices on other networks and a move to unlimited voice traffic. Telefonica expects that its domestic 4G network will cover nearly 50 per cent of Spain’s population by the end of the year and plans to avoid charging any premiums for upgrades to 4G. All these moves are to try and stop the staggering loss of subscribers that hit a maximum of 700,000 in the first three months of 2013 according to figures by CMT, the Spanish telecoms regulator.

Apple iPhone announcement of new 5S model In mid-September, after Samsung pipped Apple to the post with the announcement of their Galaxy Gear Smartwatch, Apple launched its new flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5S, sporting a fingerprint sensor and an improved camera which is up to twice as fast as the previous one. It’s also available in gold, and it’s more expensive than its predecessor! Nothing radical or earth shattering that will make this a “must have”, I think. However it does have a new Apple A7 processor, which combines new 64-bit architecture with improved processing capabilities. This should result in a doubling of the speed of the phone compared with the iPhone 5. In fact it’s 56 times faster than the first iPhone! This increase in processing capability will allow app developers to build much more sophisticated games than previously.

State of Work September 2013 Amarres Deportivos SL, was awarded two concessions in 2010 and 2011 to renovate the Marinas of Pantalan del Mediterraneo, along the Paseo Maritimo and the old Pier 46 (Moll Vell) close to the STP yard, in what is probably the most sheltered part of the harbour, as well as having very easy access into the “Old Town” of Palma. The permitted changes to these two developments ranged from the building of a new pier on top of the old Pantalan del Mediterraneo piles, ( thus avoiding the increased pouring of concrete into the sea) to excavating the whole footprint of the new building at Moll Vell to a depth of -2.7 mtr below sea level. This meant using the power of 14 high flow water pumps for two months, keeping the hole dry! Oscar Siches, the man behind these developments told us that the marina business has changed hugely over the past 20 years. The days of just waiting for boats arriving to fill up your marina have long gone in most cases. These days there is a need to study the market to decide which size and class of boat that you want to attract. The needs of a fleet of small dayboats, where just a few toilets is sufficient, are very different to the requirements of 9 to 16 mtr cruising yachts who need plenty showers and loos for their crews. Boats of 25 mtrs upwards are different again due to having first class facilities on board and who don’t need showers on the marina, but do need parking close by their

yacht as they will be taking vast amounts of shopping etc on board. The larger boats also demand higher security and high speed wifi on tap. All these factors as well as local market, social, political and economic conditions have to be carefully considered. Another issue, which many marina designers ignore, is the role of the suppliers to all of the boats. The bigger the boat, the more services will be required. From maintenance to repairs to renovation, a yacht in port generates a lot of extra traffic to cater for laundry, carpet cleaning, engineers, victuals etc. The marina has to be prepared to cater for this traffic and deal with access control so as to keep security tight without seeming like a fortress. These workers need to be aware of the code of practices within the marina to avoid any unseemly issues arising causing any ill feeling. Marina personnel need to be well trained and ready to help; before it is asked for. Assistance with carrying shopping, moving rubbish bags and general

The Moll Vell concession includes a building which will contain offices, restaurants and bars built in sympathy with its surroundings close to the cathedral. The building will be open to the public so local residents can enjoy the facilities. Other improvements made: • Double bollards so no sharing is necessary. • The berthing platform has hinged boards to store hoses and electric cables out of sight. • Access gate for vehicles can be operated by mobile phone. • Small crane to lift Jet Skis and tenders for servicing. • Raft available to use for hull maintenance. Moll Vell will have 23 moorings from 25 to 40 mtrs plus 3 moorings of 15, 18 & 20 metres. All 30 & 40 mtr berths will have 3 phase 125a electric. Pantalan del Mediterraneo offers a 128 mtr long berth with 7mtr depth plus 60 berths between 20 and 30 mtr all with 700 A power supply. The anticipated completion dates for the two marinas is the end of October for Pantalan del Mediterraneo, and mid-January 2014 for Moll Vell, although they are accepting yachts for both from the beginning of this month. Knowing the standards which Oscar Siches demands, I am very much looking forward to seeing their completion in the coming months.

UNIQUE AMERICAN MARITIME HISTORY, FOR SALE AT NORTHROP AND JOHNSON SPAIN as original as possible. She also received the Award for Best Refit during the Showboats Awards of 2004.

Steam Ship Delphine joost.goverts@ northropandjohnson.com Edificio Dux - Calle Porto Pi 4, 1ª Main: (+34) 971 707 900 Direct: (+34) 971 707 898 Mobile: (+34) 627 947 160 www.northropandjohnson.com Launched in 1921 at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in Michigan, SS DELPHINE was at 257.8 Ft and 1.342 tons the largest yacht built in the US that is still in existence today. Her original owner, Horace Dodge of the American automobile fame, designed her unique 2 x 1.500 Hp quadruple steam expansion engines. These are still working today. Her History is truly remarkable. Unfortunately Dodge did not see the yacht afloat as he passed away just months prior to her launch in May 1921. She passed into the hands of his family who cruised and attended all great boat racing event. In 1926 she caught fire and sank in the Hudson river, five months later she was re-launched again in New York, this time with a 17th century French design interior. In 1942, WWII, she was placed in US. Naval service. The interior was stored, a canon placed on the fore ship and she served as Admiral Kings Flagship. King was the admiral of the US fleet and chief of Naval Operations. She was renamed U.S.S. DAUNTLESS and served until 1946. Because logs of kings and ministers visiting the ship were not held for obvious reason, the tale goes that Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Stalin have prepared the Yalta convention on board DELPHINE.

After the war she was purchased again by the Dodge family from the Navy and mostly docked at the private pier at Rose Terrace Estate in Michigan. In 1968 she was sold by Ana Dodge to the Lundeberg Maryland Seamanship School where she served as a steam ship training vessel for 18 years. Since 1986 she was then passed into the hands of a succession of owners and it was in the port of Marseille where her present owner spotted her in 1996, in a lamentable state. Only after he had paid for the old Vessel he found out about her history and the decision was made to restore her. The investment was no less than 60M USD to breathe life back into this giant with the gentle name. The original contract price was 2 million USD which was the equivalent of 180 M USD. This illustrates the wealth of the owner at the time. The owner’s daughter an art historian spent two years on and off visiting US Maritime and newspaper archives to find back the piece of the puzzle, how she looked in her original state. Thanks to this tremendous investigation DELPHINE was brought back to almost her original design inside and out. Even the carpets were woven to exactly the same pattern.

She is registered in Madeira and offered under the condition that the owner transfers upon delivery a Solas and Rinave Passenger Vessel Safety Certificate and all class surveys in place. The extra cost are staggering. Out at sea and in full service she can take on board 26 passengers in 12 cabins with en-suite facilities. Between 28/32 crew take care of every possible wish. Coastal navigation can be done with up to 150 guests on board. There is a fully equipped gymnasium, hairdressing salon, music room with grand piano and a cigar room. The cabins are spacious with music and TV and yet fully in style. The al fresco dining table offers space for 70+ guests. The two 1.500 Break horsepower Steam Engines are very quiet and give barely any trembling. The burners use 300 Lt / hour on longer passages which make her eco friendly as well. Her boilers are 14 ton / hour 20 Bar and one auxiliary boiler that runs the auxiliaries and produces steam to go to max. speed, a 4 ton / hour 20 Bar. From cold water to operational pressure can be done in a time between 15 minutes to 3 hours, the latter being the smarter way. For maneuvering in port a standard electric bow thruster was installed and aft the vessel was equipped with a diesel, hydraulically driven unit that turns 360 degrees. She now handles like any other

motor yacht. Of all the American built steam ships SS DELPHINE is the only one left, still in her original condition and built between 1893 and 1930. Her steam engines are still original and in service. Of the very few of hundreds of similar vessels left of American Yachting in fact is she is the single best example of a privately built luxury steam ship of the early 1920’s that is virtually in her original condition. Losing her to the scrap yard would be a terrible loss to American history. She is the true reflection of the lifestyle of the wealthy group of people that were part of the industrial revolution at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with the fact that she was the Flagship U.S.S. DAUNTLESS during WWII she has earned a special place in Maritime History. It is without doubt very much worth it to find a new owner or group of owners who feel that this piece of Maritime History should be preserved. She has a track record of very successful charters and a combination of privately owned and commercial charter is a good opportunity to own her at a relatively low cost. In Northrop and Johnson we are honored to present the owners of SS DELPHINE in the quest for a new owner. For any questions and comments please contact Central Agent: Joost Goverts. (credit to I. DOCTOR AT SEA: PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Dr. Ken Prudhoe Club de Mar Medical Centre (+34) 639 949 125 drken@clubdemarmedical.com

enthusiasm on track and avoid the snags which can arise.

The UK Government has recently decided to extend well-person screening of over 40s in the hope of increasing the detection of diseases at an early stage before the problem is too serious. The move is somewhat controversial because a substantial amount of health screening is already underway in UK general practice and there is some debate about the wisdom of putting more time and effort into potentially diminishing returns.

1. The disease must be an important health problem 2. The natural history of the condition should already be well understood. 3. It must be recognisable at an early stage. 4. Treatment at an early stage should give an improved outcome. 5. A suitable test should exist which is reliable (producing few false positives or false negatives) and with a defined target population. 6. The test should be acceptable to patients. 7. Adequate facilities should exist to cope with the abnormalities detected. 8. There should be regular screening at repeated intervals when the onset is insidious 9. The chance of harm is less than the benefit. 10. Cost needs to be balanced against benefit (cost of casefinding includes diagnosis and treatment of patients diagnosed). (modified from WHO Bulletin, Andermann et al 2008)

There are well-established criteria which should be satisfied before embarking on any health prevention programme aimed at specific population groups. In 1968 the World Health Organisation commissioned a report on health screening and Wilson and Jungner published their classic work entitled “Principles and practice of screening for disease” “First do no harm” was set out by Hippocrates as a maxim for doctors and the Wilson-Jungner criteria are an attempt to keep

Their ten principles are:

On the basis of these criteria, the UK National Screening

www.clubdemarmedical.com

Committee (UK NSC) has recommended screening for a number of conditions including breast cancer (women aged 50 and over, from age 47 by 2016) and cervical cancer (women aged 25 and over), bowel cancer screening for all men and women aged 60 and over. Pregnant women are offered tests to assess foetal problems. Young children are screened and school entry checks include height, weight, vision and hearing. All diabetics aged 12 and over are offered screening of the retina for diabetes-related changes which can lead to impaired vision. Both men and women, who are aged 25 and over and are sexually active, are offered annual chlamydia screening. GPs undertake regular well person checks including blood pressure and also urine testing for undiagnosed diabetes in older people as well as monitoring potential obesity and other lifestyle issues such as smoking and alcohol consumption. The list goes on! One notable condition which is not included is prostate cancer screening. Screening has been shown to reduce mortality by 20% but is associated with a high level of over treatment because the untreated condition is generally slow growing anyway. The standard blood test (PSA, prostate specific antigen) is not fully reliable and generates a significant proportion with slightly raised levels who are then obliged to proceed to a prostate biopsy which is not attractive and overall the process leads to several weeks

of anxiety whilst clarifying the false positive result. To save one life, 48 additional cases of prostate cancer need to be treated. Prostate cancer screening at present is regarded as fulfilling only the first principle of screening convincingly and the UK NSC, in 1997, recommended that a prostate cancer screening programme should not be introduced in England. The policy was reviewed in December 2010 and no significant changes were made. It is due to be considered again in 2013/2014, or earlier if significant new evidence emerges. In the meantime, men will pay for the PSA test and the great majority get a normal result which is welcome. Genetic testing is relatively cheap, quick and easy but the implications for national health services are huge. Genetic prediction of breast cancer is just one example amongst a growing number of possibilities and the recent brave move by Angelina Jolie to undergo anticipatory/preventive double mastectomy concentrates the mind if extrapolated over an entire national female population and funded out of public resources. Prevention remains better than cure but only if we can rationalise our efforts and avoid massive information overload that could herald a false dawn.

SUP 11-CITY TOUR - THE NETHERLANDS (WITH A MALLORCAN CONNECTION) MISTRAL SUP Board. Nearly 300 photos/videos were placed on Whites International Yachts Facebook page and those photos have gone all over the world by tagging, liking and sharing. Jacqueline Venema: “we were surprised and overwhelmed by the amount of support and messages we received. Besides the live tracking GPS facility, this contest was also for family and friends and a perfect way to follow our guys from Mallorca”.

The world’s longest and one of the toughest Stand Up Paddle races took place for the 5th year from the 4 – 8th of September 2013 (www.sup11citytour.com). This race is a derivative of the prestigious and biggest ice-skating tour in the world: ´De Elfstedentocht´. This 11-City-Tour can only be held if the ice is at least 15 centimetres thick. It is more than 15 years ago that the last race took place! Thankfully for SUPping no such hard conditions are required. The ‘beach boys’ invented SUP in Honolulu around 1960. SUP was re-invented in Hawaii again in 2004 by world-class ‘watermen’ and it is now the fastest growing water sport in the world. Founder Anne-Marie Reichmann as a former windsurfer came in to contact with SUP boarding in 2008 on Hawaii and as Frisian born and bred she started the initiative of the SUP 11-City Tour event. Now athletes from all over the world come to participate in the

Solo Competition, Team Competition, Solo Tour, Team Tour and Weekend Stage and races along the canals, lakes and waterways linking 11 medieval cities in Friesland, the northern province of The Netherlands. The day before the start of the race, the organization organized a fancy dress Prologue through the canals of Leeuwarden where 163 people, young and old stand on a SUP-board. Mallorca was represented by the Whites Yachts SUP Team. All the team were participants of the solo competition consisting of: Rom Loopik captain of Super Yacht Passe Partout, Ruben Salvador Morte of Kiteshop El Niño in Can Pastilla, Tolo Cañellas Adrover works for 061 Baleares and yacht brokers Arend Venema and Dirk-Jan Coljee of Whites International Yachts. Besides them also Ahmet Senoglu (who came out for Turkey), Miguel Martorell also members of the SUP Club Mallorca and Spanish SUP champion Ramón Blanco Sainz-Rozas faced up to this physical and mental challenge. Whites Yachts sponsored the Whites Yachts SUP Team by supplying them accommodation on a motorboat. This boat was skippered by Rom’s father Jan Loopik who followed and supported the team. Also Whites Yachts organized a photo and video contest and the best submission won a

To paddle 220 kilometers 5 days in a row demands a lot of preparation and training. For Ruben it was the third time and for Rom and Tolo the second time they participated. Even though Dirk-Jan did 11-City Tours as a former windsurfer 5 times before, it still was his and Arend’s first time racing and knowing that they only started supping just one year ago it shows that the Team and Ruben of Kiteshop El Niño has been a great SUP teacher and mental coach. Daily schedule means: wake up at 6am, breakfast and eat as much as possible, GPS pickup, filling camel bag, preparing bag with food and energy stuff, skippers meeting, prepare board and equipment, start at 9am, 25 km paddle, paddle, rest stop of 15 min, 20 km paddle,

SUP down the canals

paddle, finish, 30 minutes great massage, relax time, award ceremonies, 6pm pasta dinner, sightseeing of the city and preparing (mentally) and equipment for the next day and an early bedtime. An ultimate and unique experience to paddle under all Dutch weather conditions through beautiful and charming Friesland. Of course for some it is a race, for others a challenge, but the thing which is most appealing is the great Frisian atmosphere, supporters, the fairness and the willingness to encourage each other. Each and every one shares the same passion and had the same goal; to reach the finish without injuries after 220 km paddling in 5 days and gain the coveted 11-City Tour “kruisje” - medal. Mallorca is a great place to learn Stand Up Paddle and Kiteshop El Niño organizes every weekend several courses with lots of technical tips and freestyle to get more balance. At the same time they organize impressive tours around Mallorca finding caves and beautiful clear waters. First upcoming event is the 6th of October; there is a free day to test new 2014 boards and a little fun competition for children, beginners and advanced riders.

A TALE OF TWO SUPS

Sarah Drane sarah@purplecakefactory.com It’s that stomach-knotting time of year when, any moment, summer is going to flounce out of our lives and abandon us. Yes we’ll have blue skies, yes we’ll have sunshine, but the sunloungers will be stacked up and the beach bars packed up as if the whole thing never happened. For this reason I am squeezing in as much sunny SUP as possible. Since the last missive I have ‘enjoyed’ two very distinct SUP experiences, each as incredulous as the other.

Praise first, their kit is impressive: a neat row of BIC Ace-Tec SUPs, with barely a scratch on them, accompanied by decent telescopic paddles. We opted for a couple of easygoing 11ft 6inchers (a bit lazy, but hey) strapped on the ankle leash and off we went. The sea was calm, the sun hot-but-not-too-hot and the scenery pretty fabulous. The beauty of setting off from Son Caliu is that you can head ‘right’ towards the razzmatazz of Magaluf or bear a dignified ´left’ to skirt the doorstep of the cove-front Punta Negra boutique hotel, marvel at the majestic five-star St Regis Mardavall and hear the thwack of balls at Sporting Tenis &

So far, so normal. Then Mr Suping Mallorca appeared on a board, GoPro aloft. What happened next is difficult to put into words. I was expecting (and grateful for) just one or two shots, however Beverley Goodway (Fleet Street’s most famous Page Three Photographer) was clearly trapped inside the Latin American’s body as he barked out (unprintable) posing instructions. 111 awkward camera clicks later (yes, I did try to stop him, however my pal didn’t help with her sniggering and encouragement) the ‘ordeal’ was over. I had my pictures (and then some). For the second ‘interesting’ SUP experience I headed to Pollenca and tackled the big wild wavy seas of the north. This time I had a 5ft 2inch blonde bombshell for company, and what she lacks in height she certainly makes up for with adventure. Not only is she currently planning a trifling all-female row across the Pacific (a mere 8,446 miles) but last year she did a casual 1,000 mile SUP down (up?) America’s Missouri River. It only took her a couple of months. Needless to say I felt rather inexperienced (and brunette) as we set off from Photo: Suping Mallorca

The first can most politely described as ‘interesting’ and the blame lies squarely on The Islander. Knowing that pictures are essential to this column, a pal suggested I try the petite yet perfectly equipped ‘Suping Mallorca’, as they are happy to GoPro your experience. New

for 2013 on Son Caliu beach, this centre is run by two rather enthusiastic half-Uruguayanhalf-Italian chaps – one slightly more enthusiastic than the other.

the beach, but we soon encountered a big leveller – jellyfish. Anyone who’s been in and around Mallorca this year will know that the jellyfish have been a right pain in the posterior. Scientists have confirmed that the beasties have been more abundant and larger in the Mediterranean this season, indeed I have been stung a couple of times myself, but what I witnessed in Pollenca was nothing short of horror movie worthy. The bombshell and I spent an hour dodging several varieties of jellyfish and using every ounce of concentration to not fall in. No word of exaggeration (a habit I am very prone to) we passed 50 or more of the things. Some looked like swollen football-size severed heads with entrails hanging out whilst others were the small translucent purple variety with long punch-packing tentacles. All very nice if you’re the other side of the glass at the London Aquarium – not so good if stood on top of them with only a bikini for protection. Sufficed to say we made it back unscathed and extracted the positives. One - SUP is a sport that works every muscle in your body, particularly your core as you subconsciously maintain your balance, throw in a jellyfish obstacle course and a choppy sea, and I am sure the calorie loss was even more spectacular. Two – I managed to keep up with the ‘adventurer’ and we’re now seriously exploring the possibility of a Caribbean island hop SUP in 2014 (no jellyfish there - right?!).

Suping Mallorca (find them on Facebook) have a residents’ offer of just 8 euros per hour SUP rental until 1 November – I urge you to give them a try, just take your own GoPro.

Don t use momentum and make sure the legs go straight up and down. ARGANINE & FOLATE TO REDUCE FAT, IMPROVE EXERCISE PERFORMANCE & ENERGY. Arginine is an essential amino acid. It lowers the risk of blood clotting, helps diabetes, improves wound healing, reduces body fat and gastro intestinal problems, improves bone density and helps to inhibit fat storage – great! Increased Arginine presence in trained individuals has been linked to improved oxygen consumption, improved lactic acid utalisation and improved uptake of glycogen to the muscles post workout. In other words for an increase in exercise performance and speedy recovery – eat more arginine containing foods. Dark chocolate and dark chocolate powder, seeds and nuts, buckwheat if you eat grains, dark leafy greens, shellfish, watermelons and beets. Make sure you are eating sufficient folate sources too as these two work together – dark leafy greens, squash, fish, shellfish and eggs. Try making spinach and egg salad or coconut shrimp Thai curry with squash.

Everybody knows stress is a killer but did you know that symptoms such as allergies, headaches, bloating, low immunity, asthma etc. also have a common root in chronic adrenal stress? Today’s life is full of hassles with demands, deadlines, work pressures etc. and if you are on the go all the time, never relax or spend hours in front of a computer / electronic equipment, you are certainly triggering stress hormones. It may not FEEL the same as emotional stress but the effect on your body is the same. If it continues it will cause ill health in the long term. Are your symptoms due to stress? Do you: 1. Need several cups of coffee in the morning to get going? 2. Continually think about problems / plan what to do next? 3. Never relax, are always ‘on the go’, even if you feel tired? 4. Need to be doing something / feel guilty if you don’t? 5. You stay up late then don’t sleep well? 6. Use alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax? 7. Need carbohydrates to give you energy? 8. Have trouble concentrating? 9. Have addictive behaviours? 10. Feel more irritable, or reactive to others? 11. Experience indigestion, constipation or ’irritable bowel’? 12. Have high cholesterol? 13. Have asthma, allergies or frequent colds? 14. Have muscle tension, especially in your neck or back? How many ‘yes’s did you score?

1-3. You are less stressed than most, but there’s still room for improvement. Working on your coping skills and exercising on a daily basis may be all you need to fine tune your situation. 4-9. You are experiencing stress but you are still in the manageable range. Select one thing from the above list that you think would have the most impact on your energy and well-being. Pick an easy action to begin with and work on changing it until it becomes a habit. Then move onto another one. 10-14. You have more stress than average and sustained high levels of adrenal hormones. Your body is struggling to balance itself despite your attempts to boost it with caffeine and sugary foods. Schedule 15 minuteshalf hour relaxation daily and stick to it. Seek professional help to deal with your stress. WHAT TO DO NEXT To start dealing with your stress, you need to know where it’s coming from. Keep a diary of all your activities for a weekwork, home, family, social, eating, R& R, sleep, exercise etc. Draw a pie chart in proportions that represent each activity. What does it look like? What patterns can you see? Understanding where stress fits into your life is the first step to dealing with it. RESCUE DIVER DIVE CERTIFICATION Nick Stael von Holstein info@ondineescape.com As your passion for scuba diving grows, it’s important to broaden your skills and knowledge so you can experience more challenging dive sites some of which maybe remotely located. If you work on a yacht, there is a good chance you will get to experience magnificent destinations as you travel through the Caribbean, Red Sea or crossing the Pacific. All the more reason to be prepared for the unexpected and well versed on how to handle various diving scenarios that go beyond an entry level Openwater and even Advanced Openwater certification. For example, an injured diver and appropriate first aid response and assistance, or what to do with a tired diver or how to handle an unconscious diver recovery. The skills you learn in a Rescue Diver course will provide invaluable knowledge which can be extended to general yacht watersport activity supervision. Free diving for example is gaining rapidly in popularity and requires some basic rules to conduct safely. A rare opportunity is available next month in Mallorca with Ondine, how to learn and train freediving techniques with a freediving world champion which will incorporate basic elements of Rescue Diver training. So what kind of scenarios should you be ready to handle: • Decompression sickness (The Bends) and lung injuries. There are a couple very simple and straight forward rules when diving which is taught at the Open Water entry level

certification....don’t hold your breath, ascend from a dive slowly with a controlled rate and dive within your limits and training. Accidents can still happen despite following the best laid plans and following the rules. • Assisting a tired or overexerted diver • Unconscious diver recovery on the surface or underwater • Organising a search for a lost diver both above and below the surface • Marine life injuries such as jellyfish or fire coral stings Being knowledgeable about interacting with marine life is important. Underwater you have the opportunity of interacting with wild marine life on a very intimate and up close and personal basis. It’s important to respect their home and not aggressively molest an animal or its habitat. The simple rule is, respect marine life and keep your distance and the animals will leave you alone. An animal that is attacked will return the favour in the name of defence even if it’s a case of accidental contact. • Knowledge of first aid procedures and equipment in dealing with dive related injuries. Ask yourself the question: Are you prepared to handle any of the above scenarios? If not then the Rescue Diver Course is for you. The Rescue Diver course is designed to sharpen your skills and prepare you for the unprepared as well as provide an excellent team building experience and is the stepping stone to a Divemaster rating. For more info contact Brad or Nick at Yacht Scuba Safety with Ondine Diving – the crew dive training specialists.

UK RATIFIES MLC 2006 AFTER “LENGTHY PROCESS”

The MLC includes a number of key elements that involve the operation of larger superyachts over 500 grt The UK has now ratified the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) in time for it to come into force. The MLC includes a number of key elements that involve the operation of larger superyachts over 500 grt. Earlier this year there were concerns voiced in the UK superyacht community that MLC 2006 would not be ratified in time and if that was the case it could affect the running of UK-flagged yachts as well as those under Red Ensign registers. The consultation processes were for a long while bypassed by the superyacht sector until the realisation that it had sections that would significantly affect the management, operation and building of some larger superyachts. The areas covered by MLC 2006 include seafarer employment terms and conditions, qualifications, health and welfare, accommodation and port state control. MLC 2006 consolidates and updates more than 68 international labour standards in the maritime sector. It sets minimum global standards for seafarers’ living and working conditions. It also reflects the valuable contribution of the ILO to global employment standards.

In a press statement the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) said: “The ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention has been a lengthy process that involved a number of government departments including DWP, FCO and BIS alongside extensive contributions from the UK Chamber of Shipping, Nautilus International, the RMT union and other stakeholders. It presented us with the opportunity to update legislation.” The UK’s adoption has also been extended to include both the Isle of Man and Gibraltar. Mark Towl, vessel policy manager at the MCA, told IBI: “The UK Register has eight yachts over 500 tonnes that will need certification and 85 yachts under 500 tonnes that may apply for voluntary certification. The convention comes into force from August 20, 2013 and we recommend that all new build yachts with their keel laid take account of MLC from that date. We have set the sheltered water qualification for yachts in domestic voyages at 60 miles, which is larger than some other countries that have ratified. We have done this to reduce the burden on the operation of yachts on domestic voyages.” An Isle of Man Shipping Register spokeswoman told IBI: “The Isle of Man Shipping Register has 419 yachts on the register of which 316 are pleasure yachts

No figures could be obtained for the number of yachts on the Gibraltar register. Towl explained that “the Isle of Man and Gibraltar registers have been included with the UK ratification because they asked to be so.” He anticipated that other Red Ensign registers such as Cayman Islands might do the same. A spokesman for the British Marine Federation told IBI: “The BMF has been very involved with the ratification of MLC and it feels happy and comfortable with the UK ratifying MLC. Our technical team have been actively engaged in the ratification process, which has included the formulation of the MGM 490 package.”

This package relates to equivalent accommodation standards in yachts under 200 tonnes and it is to be published imminently. Stephen Hammond MP, UK Minister for Shipping, said: “I am pleased to adopt this convention. This will ensure that there are globally agreed standards for seafarers and their right to decent working conditions.” Photo: Martinez Studio

of all sizes, and of these 49 are over 24m (78ft). As regards the 103 commercial yachts they are all over 24m.”

GIVING SOMETHING BACK

brad@asociacionondine.org www.asociacionondine.org Putting something back into the natural environment we all make our livings from, either directly or indirectly, is the right thing to do, and we all know this is true! How many of us actually do though? With our busy lives with work and family it is not always possible even when we want to. Well, now is your opportunity to put something back into the Balearic Sea without taking up too much of your time. Asociación Ondine has established itself as Mallorca´s fastest growing marine conservation organization and the momentum our committed team is working at increases everyday. The size of our team has also increased over the past few months, it really is an amazing evolution to be part of. Our first official project, The Mallorca Stingray Survey, is not only proving to be a successful project in regards to the science side but also with the ever

increasing interest from locals and tourists alike. We receive texts, emails and calls from excited people around the Balearics when they come across a stingray, it is amazing how many people this project has touched. The public awareness is working and working well. Not forgetting the €36000 this project has generated for the Island. This money was kindly donated by one family, Stefan and Irina Hearst you two have kick-started marine conservation here in the Balearic Islands. Thank you! We are now in the planning stage for Mallorca Stingray Survey phase 2, which will include tagging and monitoring the movement patterns of the common stingrays around same area we are now studying. You can see a little more about our future projects on our website and also in the insert in this months Islander. Our future projects are all ambitious but very much achievable, beneficial for the Balearic Islands and more importantly beneficial for you, boat owners, fishermen, divers, snorkelers, crew members and all the other lucky people that spend time on or in the sea. October is our month for promoting new members and also our wish list, like any other NGO Asociación Ondine needs support from the community to continue our work. We have been creative in our design and structure of memberships so as we can give our new members

the best value for money possible, its not a simple donation, our members receive goods and services for joining us. One of the other huge benefits, particularly for nautical businesses, is attaching yourselves to a lean green conservation machine is a wonderful thing for your public image. Even though we are in Spain where conservation is still not common practice, many businesses on the islands deal with international clients, hence showing our clients we have an environmental conscience boosts our credibility in this day and age of environmental concern. Our members and sponsors also have the ability to voice their concerns to our team, meaning if there are local issues you would like to see dealt with we can sit and discuss what kind of solutions there might be. Which is a great way for local businesses, boats and individuals to instigate new research or conservation actions. Its all about bringing

us closer together with the view of benefiting local marine ecosystems, businesses and our understanding of the sea. What are you waiting for? Join us today!! We have Planet Space as gold members, as well as that they have offered Asociacion Ondine free storage of our wish list goods. Our new T-shirts have been provided by another Gold member company, Deckers Uniforms and Marexi Marine technologies are on board as well. The ball is rolling! What is our Wish List? This is another way that the nautical industry can assist with marine conservation and research here in the Balearics, simply by donating what was going to be thrown away anyway. It is a variety of goods that we can use to conduct some of our projects and even inspire new projects to be created, its an ambitious list which includes an ocean going research vessel, something I don’t expect owners to give us, but who knows, maybe there is an owner out there that wants to help us find and tag migrating basking sharks or even go to the extreme of become the first group of people in the world to find and tag a Great White Shark in the Mediterranean! Like I said our plans are ambitious but most definitely achievable! Why am I so confident? There are a few reasons for this, the first reason is the quality and commitment of our direct team, and here they are…

Gabriel Morey (Spain, Mallorca) Vice President Asociación Ondine Silke Bommersheim (Germany) Environmental manager Abi Tottman (UK) Environmental manager Sam Childs (UK) Project coordinator Alma Van Niekerk (New Zealand) Marine Conservation advisor Brad Robertson (Australia) President of Asociacion Ondine Nick Stael von Holstein (Sweden) PR and promotions Bea Esparza (Spain) Accounts and kids programs specialist Jonathan Fox Bassett (UK) Official photographer / videographer David Diley (UK) Official underwater photographer/ videographer Not forgetting the huge number of volunteers around the islands that have signed up to help with various aspects of our projects. The other main reason I am so confident we will succeed, with your help of course, is the fact that the Balearic Islands hold some of the healthiest marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean, with our geographical location and the under-sea topography we are

less influenced by the hugely destructive fishing practices seen in other parts of the Med. Which gives us a huge advantage but does not mean we are in a location that is not effected at all, we still have many issues here that require solutions. So in a nutshell we have the right team in the right area, it’s a winner!! So if you are in re-fit this winter and have a load of usable goods you are about to throw away, think “Hey the great guys and girls at Asociación Ondine might use these for cool projects, I´ll call Brad and ask if they are useful for them.” It doesn’t take much! To finish off this months column I ask you all “Can your business or yacht afford to join Asociación Ondine?” If the answer is yes then please contact us now, it is the right thing to do and a very gratifying thing to do as well. For those of you who don’t have a business or a yacht but would like to join we also have individual membership as well as a simple donation option. Let’s show Spain and the rest of the world that all of us who call the Balearic Islands home or home away from home do care and can work together to improve this amazing part of the world!

our oceans STRAIGHT TALK ON THE our DOSH future

Phil D. Coffers The Islander Economics Correspondent Madrid’s Twenty Twenty Vision “If you build it, they will come.” was the ghostly message that inspired Kevin Costner to build a baseball diamond in the middle of an Iowan cornfield in the schmaltzy baseball movie `The Field of Dreams`. He built it, of course, and come they did, and they all lived happily ever after. But that’s Hollywood, and that is how it always goes in tinsel town. This should not be the blueprint for an Olympic bid. In early September, the gamble failed as the IOC opted for Tokyo, kicking off a good deal of soul searching, and the inevitable finger pointing in the Spanish capital as they begin the search for plan B for digging the Madrilenos out of their financial mire. Madrid pitched for the 2012 games, they went to London, 2016 went to Rio, and they again threw their hat into the ring for the 2020 games, but they appear to have been labouring under the misguided optimism that persistence always pays off, so they started building anyway. They have ploughed nearly half a billion Euros into an aquatic centre that lies unfinished and needs another €80 million to complete. They have begun work on a centrepiece stadium, La Peineta, which, likewise, is unfinished. It is destined to be the new home of Atletico Madrid, but as the Olympic bid has now failed, the

finance to finish it will not be forthcoming, and yes, you guessed it, there is no plan B to raise the required cash. The Olympic tennis and basketball arena, La Caja Magica, is built, which at nearly €300 million was twice over budget. It boasts one annual tennis tournament. It’s management company has gone bust, and it is up for sale. Any takers?... thought not. The city itself is €7.75 billion in the red, one of the highest nationally, and also appears to have pinned its hopes on the Olympic billions to flood in and pay off the debt. Except now it won’t. An Olympic games is a vast financial project that properly executed can give a country a tangible financial shot in the arm, and a less tangible but no less important warm glow about itself that can turn a national consciousness. Even the most cynical of hearts felt a swell of patriotism as London welcomed the world last summer. To dip into your pocket, as the residents of Madrid and Spain have had to do, to pay for an Olympics that they will never even get to enjoy is a kick in the teeth that a country with the financial problems that Spain is enduring can ill afford. The legacy of Madrid 2012/16/20 is folly, squandered billions, bigger debts and no plan b/c or d to plug the hole in the finances excavated by billion euro gamblers playing double or quits with taxpayers money. They risked their future on the toss of a coin, and lost. Not exactly the standard Hollywood ending.

MORTGAGES… YES, THEY DO STILL EXIST!! Luis Alberto Ferreyra Economist and Financial Planner (+34) 610 216 441

Now, some 6 years on , we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, although it will never be the same as before.

Many of us wonder what has happened to the mortgage market in Spain. A few years ago it was so easy to get a mortgage and for even more than the property was worth.

Here are some differences that might help you consider when applying for a mortgage.

What happened really? Why have Spanish banks changed so radically their service in this area? The truth is that after the collapse of the financial system in 2007, almost 40 cajas and banks have gone bankrupt and the financial institutions are not enjoying their best moments. You have probably noticed lots of joint ventures among them, which are not voluntary, they are imposed by the bank of Spain. Many of you might wonder how on earth this could happen. Well, the problem starts on how banks work. The banking system works on a fractional reserve basis that means per every 100 Euros you deposit they keep a small fraction of that money and invest or lend the rest. At the moment, with Basilea III, the law states a minimum reserve of 8 %. So when a market in which they have invested so much money fails, like the property market, the banks have enormous cash problems. And when they have these kinds of problems, they freeze lending.

If you are an expat, the maximum you will get now is 70 % of the lowest between the purchase price and the valuation the bank does on the property. Whereas before they gave you up to 100 % of the valuation they did, this was higher in some cases than the market price. You need to consider therefore coming up with the 30 % plus the taxes. To make round numbers think of 11 %. That makes a total of 41 %. The payment on your mortgage must not exceed 35 % of your salary, that means, if you are making 3.000 € a month, the maximum mortgage repayment cannot be more than 900 €. Also consider that valuations are not as optimistic as before, and they are being much more cautious.. But in a nutshell, we can say that the mortgage market is starting to reactivate, so if you want to buy a property here in Spain... don’t lose hope as mortgages still exist!

BARCELONA NEWS

Test driving and photos by Gerard Falcó roland@watertight-marine.com www.watertight-marine.com www.watertight-system.com Williams 565 boat test. Can a tender be both practical and exhilarating? Captains, crew and owners often see jet tenders - in fact most tenders, whether drive, outboard or jet - as enjoyable and useful, but unreliable and potentially dangerous. A combination of high power, fragile components, protruding pieces of hard metal and volatile gasoline brings unwelcome maintenance and handling challenges. Williams have been developing a new range of dieseljets that eliminate or at least address all those concerns. We were lucky enough to drive a 565 earlier this year at their test facility in the UK (hence the wintery looking photos). Before even driving the tender, it’s good to know that power is delivered by a 150hp Yanmar 4BY3 diesel (or 180hp for the “S” version). The reliability of

these engines is legendary and maintenance is easily covered by Yanmar’s global service network. Once out of warranty, the engines are relatively straightforward to maintain and the easy access on the 565 will be welcomed by yacht crews responsible for keeping them going. There is also the compelling advantage that no gasoline need be stored on board the mothership. Williams have thought hard about making life easier for crew in other ways. The 565 tubes are designed to be removable in the event of a mishap (although the toughness and quality make that necessity hard to imagine.) To help guests on and off, there are removable boarding poles rigid vertical poles that provide stability in a chop. Once on the plane, convenient grab handles are everywhere, reducing the driver’s fear of propelling the boss into an unwanted freedive. The central driving position (as opposed to aft) provides great all-round visibility and reassuringly quick access to all parts of the tender.

CHANDLERY

To crane the 565 up to her dock, the fixing points are accessible and hassle free. There are no protruding fins or props to cause injury or chips in the paint, and once in place the vertical space occupied is reduced by the fold-down windshield. Any suspicion that this practical machine might be boring is blasted away by a drive. The Yanmar engine, coupled to Williams’ own waterjet, delivers exciting acceleration and performance: a top speed of 36 knots, constant grip and torque from start to sprint and the feeling that there is plenty in reserve for towing skiers. Our driver put the boat in the air off her own wake on a test lake just long enough to reach top speed. As Williams dealers naturally it is in our interest to rave about this product, but I feel entirely justified in doing so about a boat that offers genuine solutions to a

SUPPLIES

number of problems. In fact everyone we know of that has encountered a 565 has been similarly enthused. That includes boat test journalists, whose tough lot in life it is to travel the world putting boats and yachts through their paces. Have a look for example at Motor Boat and Yachting’s review and youtube movie. Overall the Williams 565 is a versatile and well balanced product that looks set to be seen darting around the Med and further afield. If you need yours to look different, choose custom tube colours, upholstery, dashboards and sound systems.

surveyor.

1) Integrity of the hull & deck. 2) The state of the engine(s). 3) The state of the rigging. 4) The state of the sails.

The hull is what keeps the boat afloat! There seems to be an almost obsessive concern about osmosis on the part of many buyers when a much more likely cause of sinking are inadequately maintained sea cocks. How many buyers lift up the cabin sole and check that all the sea cocks operate correctly and that the hoses are not perished? Too few in my opinion! Ask the vendor to tell you when was the last time the boat was out of the water, what hull maintenance was carried out in the last two years, why? Ask the vendor to tell you if the yacht has ever been grounded or involved in an accident.

Many buyers abdicate responsibility for these four key points and engage a surveyor to give them a condition report. If you really want to extract value from a survey then the surveyor needs to be directed and that means doing a thorough initial inspection yourself before handing over to a professional

You do not need to go out on a sea trial to know that an engine is sound. Run it, look at it, listen to it, look at the exhaust fumes put it into gear against secure berthing lines and let it run up to operating temperature. Ask impertinent questions about the maintenance regime. Look at the rigging is there any

Common Sense Boat Buying Buying a yacht is generally a big financial commitment for most people. Ensuring that you sell or buy successfully requires a little effort on your part. Let’s start with the physical yacht itself. There are four really important things that you need to ensure as part of a purchase or sale:

I do not value a boat by the marine electronics installed aboard. This can be changed relatively easily. The inexorable price/performance improvement of marine electronics in recent years and the ability of yachtsmen to buy their kit in tax free locations like Gibraltar lower its importance in any buying decision. Finally examine the safety gear and make a list of what is in date and what needs to be replaced. Do all of this BEFORE making an offer and before you engage in survey costs. So what do you need a surveyor for? A surveyor needs to be directed to find genuine “material defects”. A surveyor’s report padded out with photographs, telling you what model winches are installed or stating the obvious copied from the broker’s yacht listing is as useful as a chocolate watch! If you’ve inspected the boat yourself you’ll know all about the safety equipment and all the other kit installed on the vessel. You don’t need a surveyor to tell you there are

four out of date fire extinguishers on the boat! A good surveyor will be pleased to receive guidance to delve more deeply in those areas where your own inspection raised concerns. This makes his life more interesting and gets you immersed in what will soon become your own boat. If your chosen surveyor insists on doing things that would not add further insight beyond what your own inspection has revealed say so and if he insists remember you are the customer and you have choices. Then there is documentation to consider. A good broker will ensure that there is clear title to the vessel. If the vessel has been sold within the previous five years you will want the vendor to produce the previous Bill of Sale because the yacht registry will require it. What is the VAT status of the vessel? Can the vendor produce documentary evidence of payment of VAT? Does the vessel meet the EU RCD (Recreational Craft Directive)? Look for a CE certificate or a plaque stating CE compliance somewhere in the cockpit. If you find this daunting you shouldn’t, it’s all common-sense. Boatshed Gibraltar is there to help guide you through the whole transaction and beyond making sure not only that you acquire a sound yacht but that you have a berth, insurance and a professional skipper (if you need one) to introduce you to handling your new vessel.

We are, however, extremely lucky to be able to call on Viviane Pelletier at Velas Fonduco when we need help with torn sails or battered biminis. Viviane is a talented sailmaker who set up her business in Menorca 26 years ago in the Fonduco area of Port Mahon (close to the Miramar and Rocamar Hotels). As her business grew she moved to the industrial estate in Mahon and then to Es Castell where she fitted out purpose designed premises 15 years ago. Here she has 5 sewing machines for different types of work and other specialist equipment such as machinery to cut foam. ‘Most sailmakers have pits dug into the floor, but I raised the

Viviane Pelletier

Es Castell Workshop floor to give me plenty of hidden storage underneath for my materials,’ Viviane explained. Over the years, Viviane has collected many sail related items, the most precious of which she keeps in her locally famous ‘caja de los milagros’ or miracle box. Viviane was born in Perpignan, and she learned her trade at a sailmakers in Britanny, northern France, in the 1980´s. There, she was given a detailed book of sail plans entitled ‘Les Voiles de Nos Bateaux’ which she has kept to this day and which she says she still refers to from time to time to study the patterns of more unusual types of sail. Viviane has built up a large client base, making and mending sails for boats of all sizes, including kitesurfers, windsurfers, racing dinghies, racing yachts and cruising boats. The largest sail she has worked on in Es Castell was from a 75’ sailing catamaran. If it is new sails you need, Velas Fonduco is the local agent for North Sails and Rolly Tasker sails. We always watch in wonder as Vivienne arrives on boat to measure up for a new bimini or sprayhood. With her tape measure, pins, paper patterns, a great eye for detail and high degree of spacial awareness she quickly draws up a pattern. A while later she brings back the finished article such as a beautifully finished bimini, with complex windows, straps and extensions, which fits like

a glove over the stainless steel fittings. It is due to her talent that she won the contract to design the patterns for the upholstery for the luxury Menorquin Motor Yachts manufactured on the island. These are based on the design of the traditional boats used by Minorcan fishermen. Today, Viviane designs the upholstery for the latest Sasga range of yachts produced by the Sastre family. The company discovered Viviane when she was working on the industrial estate near their premises and she has worked with them ever since.

other materials lying around her workshop. There are several companies manufacturing bags out of sail cloth but what sets Viviane apart is that she will design and make a unique bag, taking into account the taste and requirements of the customer. Bags can be made out of second hand sails if they are not too worn. For example, she recently designed and made a wedding present for a man using the sail from the Snipe dinghy that he had raced when he was a child (see picture). The bags can now be seen at her new shop at C/ Anden de Levant on the front in Port Mahon, near the Bar d’Es Port. During the winter, Viviane will open the shop each evening so that local people can come in and watch her work and order special presents for their family and friends. Viviane’s son Nicolas Werner, also has sailing in his veins. He races Lasers in the Under 17 class for the Federation of Balearics sailing team. His aim is to be in the top 3 in the Spanish Championships and then go on to compete in the European championships. When he chooses a university, the most important factor will be that it is close to the sea!

Viviane speaks 5 languages, French, Catalan, Spanish, English and German, which she says has helped her to widen her customer base. She works for the many charter and private boats which pass through Menorca from all over Europe. The languages have also helped her to develop her business during the winter months, offering a design and manufacturing service for anyone needing a large or complicated bespoke piece. These have included large private houses wanting garden awnings, a bar complex needing a cover for its outdoor stage, theatre curtains and even a canopy for a horse and cart. Last winter Viviane found a new outlet for her artistic skills when she started to design and manufacture a range of bags made out of sails, canvas and

COME FLY WITH US! then Dragonfly.

More information at: http://flyingfifteen. mallorcaservice.de Conde de Barcelona (Aug 21-25) The first race on Thursday saw seven boats gather for the transitional long races of the Conde de Barcelona, sailed at Puerto Alcudia for the second year. The line being set for the classics, it was more than long enough for us, but that didn’t stop some overenthusiastic barging at the committee boat. The course had been set with a buoy before the first racing mark, to keep the fleet on the “proper” side of the course. For this race, it was to be left to port, with a view to keeping the fleet away from the island. ffiel good arrived first, assumed this was the first mark, and hooked around it to port, before heading across the bay. They had gone quite a distance before they realised it was the

Day two saw winds a little lighter, although a longer course was set. This time, the first true mark was on the far side of the bay, so the “red buoy” was to be passed to starboard. A good start saw Fuego Fatuo approaching this in first place, but they tacked as Dragonfly came in on starboard, rather than ducking behind. This was a mistake, as they then continued to beat for three hundred metres before realising that they should be on the other tack, across the bay. This cost dearly, and they lost several places. Having started after us, the classics were slowly catching, with Emeraude again the leader. She soon started to overhaul the Flying Fifteens, giving many boats a free ride on her wake. Stormtrooper took most advantage of this, staying on the surf for almost five minutes, but not catching leader ffiel good. Rounding the mark saw a beam reach along

“safety” mark, and came back to unwind themselves. The rest of the fleet saw this, and passed to port before continuing the long beat to the windward mark, where Stormtrooper led. The next mark was on the opposite side of the bay, and the fleet all bore away to head for where it was believed to be. As we approached the far side, it became apparent that it wasn’t where we thought, with some boats heading down to look for it. Finally Emeraude – the leading classic, appeared and we all followed her course to find the buoy closer to the eastern side of the bay than expected. For several boats, this then turned into a second beat, which closed the fleet up dramatically. First round was Stromtrooper, then Dragonfly, followed by Fuego Fatuo and Tro close behind. Fuego Fatuo was able to use her lighter crew weight to advantage, and after a close battle passed Dragonfly for second place. After rounding the final mark, positions were unchanged, with Stromtrooper first, Fuego Fatuo second,

the southern side of the bay, but no place changes. ffiel good took first, Stormtrooper second with Dragonfly completing the top three. A surprise for the fleet was that this was actually counted as two races, one for the first three legs, and another for the complete course - effectively doubling the scores. Saturday saw winds as before and the long, long (12 miles?) beat across the bay. The fleet was well matched and most were at the mark within the same minute! Planing to the finish were Fuego Fatuo, ffiel good and Tro in that order. Racing was truly wonderful. Overall results: 1 3763 ffiel good (Scott Walker & Andrew Harvey) 2 3577 Fuego Fatuo (Stephen Babbage/John Walker & Francisco Gadala-Maria)

And, hats off to all the brilliant engineers, bless these lads, they don´t see daylight for months on end - sort of like mushrooms without the crap. But, I really want to raise my glass to all the chefs out there who churn out amazing food in cramped conditions, seeing only the four walls of the galley and if it’s an exciting day, the supermarket or local market. Comfort food, healthy food, posh nosh, hangover food, even salads are all just happy stuff. But, I have been thinking about all this new age stuff - food tends to be such a trend. I remember in the 80´s - pesto? So daring!!!! So out there! I am too young, thank god to have gone thru the pineapple and cheese on toothpicks stage. If you are an inventive chef, grab yourself a copy of my bible for chefs - called ´The Flavour Thesaurus`by Niki Segnit. An amazing book that pairs flavours - sort of like a bit of lovely sunshine in your menu plan. But, I digress, we´ve done sushi, yeah, okay, we´ve experienced fusion, which, personally I find fascinating, but what I am trying to bring around is raw food.

Yeeah, I know, it will prolong your life, you will be able to do an ironman when you´re 90 but, I don´t think I want to do the ironman when I´m 90 - can´t I just enjoy my dementia? I just think that by 80 or 90 I will just want to sit down and have a good rest - maybe take up knitting and watch Eastenders? Torment my children by moving in with them and embarrass them by drinking toilet water when they have guests over? That sounds much more inviting to this little black duck. But, nevertheless, its food, and I find it very interesting, so I have loitered around many markets and supermarkets here in Mallorca and to my surprise there is an amazing amount available for the vegan. I have found a pretty cool recipe for those who are into the raw stuff. 1 zucchini. 1 carrot, 1 avo, 1 red pepper, 1 cup of bean sprouts, 1 cup of mint leaves, some curly lettuce. Using the mandolin, slice the zucchini very thin, cut carrots, cucumber, acvo and red pepper into tiny, weenie strips. Fill zucchini with carrots cucumber and avo, bean sprouts and red pepper, mint leaves and lettuce, roll up and serve with tamari or nama shoyu for dipping. Or, take yourself and your friends out to an amazing meat restaurant called El Ciebo in Santa Ponsa - it’s been there for years, they have an amazing wine list - you won´t live to be 90 and do the Ironman, but you will have an amazing journey through life - and you will thank for me this - except if you are a vegan - sorry guys.....

Marina Estrella, exclusive dealers in Spain for Hanse Yachts and Moody Boats, have just announced the launch of two new models for 2014. They have been previewed at the recent Cannes and Barcelona Boat Shows.

Her lines are unmistakably Hanse, and she looks ultramodern with very sleek styling.

New Hanse 445 designed by Judel/Vrolijk is a modified version of the 2010 model, with a new interior layout and an upgraded rig and deck package.

The new interior layout is contemporary, with plenty of natural light. The new features should add nicely to the boat’s appeal.

The self-tacking jib and welldesigned control lines makes her easily sailed by couples and families alike.

NEW HANSE 505

The new Hanse 505 fast cruising yacht has just been launched at the recent Cannes and Barcelona Boat Shows. Designed by Judel / Vrolijk, as are most Hanse Yachts, she certainly has an eyecatching look to her sleek lines. She has a long waterline length, with a very elegant style. Her lines are all led aft, so together with her self tacking jib, a common feature on Hanse yachts, she is very easily sailed shorthanded. The rig is performance orientated, with a tall aspect ratio, making for

quick passages and combined with a large safe cockpit she should be a joy to sail. There is an individual customisation facility with this model, and Hanse claim there are 1200 permutations for the interior layout, furniture woods, carpets and upholstery!

Hanse are using the folding bathing platform idea which has become very popular on recent designs, thus saving on berthing fees and maximising internal storage. All in all this looks a very

STOKEY WOODALL ATLANTIC CIRCUIT St. Augustine, USA in early May each year…visiting Bermuda and the Azores. It is from these islands that the yachts have a choice of sailing to Cowes in the UK, Vilamoura in Portugal, or Cadiz in Spain.

Are you one of those people who have often thought about taking part in one of lifeʼs great adventures, but somehow felt you never had the chance?

comprising of two Atlantic crossings, with options of four additional cruises all of which add up to the ultimate sailing adventure of a lifetime.

Over the years, many thousands of people have dreamed of sailing the worldʼs oceans in an attempt to share the same spirit of adventure that the truly great explorers must have felt centuries ago. There are still relatively very few people, who have actually experienced this unique phenomenon.

Two very experienced sailors, Stokey Woodall and Stuart Gough, have put this special and unique bespoke sailing rally together, both of whom having a deep understanding of all aspects of long distance cruising and the needs of those sailors taking part.

Now at last, here is such an opportunity available to everyone. SWAC the Stokey Woodall Atlantic Circuit is an organized annual International Sailing Rally, the first of which begins in October 2014. It provides a fantastic opportunity for similar sized yachts from all over the world to take part in one complete circuit of the North Atlantic in company with other likeminded sailors. SWAC is a complete rally

SWAC has been designed to be memorable, fun filled and with a spirit of adventure. The SWAC Westbound Transatlantic passage starts in Madeira the third week in October each year…visiting the Cape Verde Islands before arriving in Barbados during the last week in November. This earlier and shorter transatlantic crossing ultimately guarantees a much longer cruising season in the Caribbean and beyond. The SWAC Eastbound Transatlantic passage leaves

The entire SWAC event has been carefully designed to incorporate sailing choices to suit all tastes. Visiting 23 different countries, 25 different islands and 37 different ports that include 2 transatlantic passages and 4 additional cruising options. It has been put together to establish itself as one of the finest cruising events in the world, by providing insights into countries and ways of life of people slightly off the beaten track and that are not always associated with sailing rallies. The organizers of SWAC have deliberately restricted the size of the fleet and the size of the yachts taking part, in an effort to create and maintain a level of camaraderie by sailing more as a group and not simply a collection of individual vessels. This in turn will help the rally to become a more dynamic and effective international affair to the benefit of all the participants. Yachts will start each leg together and will more often than not finish together. Social gatherings and parties will be held with and for the whole group and not just fragmented sections of it. Therefore owners, skippers, crews, families and friends will have a far greater chance to associate with each

other, make friendships and generally enjoy the rally in a much wider aspect than would otherwise be achieved. The entire rally has been configured in such a manner that it can be broken down into easily managed segments that accommodates crew changes at a variety of ports along the route. By having this choice, it allows the families and crews of yachts who cannot commit to long periods away from home, to spend quality time cruising in certain selected regions without losing their position in the rally. It also provides a much more flexible pattern for owners who are seeking to charter berths on their yachts, by being able to break the event down into more manageable segments and thereby create more income from their efforts. SWAC has also been organized in such a manner that entrants do not have to complete the entire circuit in one single journey if they choose not to. Several transit ports along the route have deliberately been included, to provide yachts with the opportunity to leave the rally at certain points and then re-join at a later stage. If you are simply looking to cross the Atlantic Ocean en-masse in the company of others then SWAC is not for you… SWAC is for the discerning sailor whose wish is to be part of something special and for it to be a stand out event they will remember all their lives.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

AMERICAN STREET PARTY FIESTA Thousands of people came from all over the Island to enjoy the Street party Organized by the Girls from Diner Restaurant to celebrate their 10th anniversary at “Sa Faixina”.

Meson la Rueda C/ Rector Vives 5-11, Genova (+34) 971 40 34 60 Tue-Sat: 19.00-23.30 Sun: 13.30-15.30 & 19.00-23.30 This month’s choice has been a regular haunt of ours for the past 10 years or so, and manages to achieve a remarkable level of consistency, in terms of the quality of food which is served. The restaurant’s signature main dish, which I would estimate accounts for around 75% of their business is “ Entrana”, or Loin of beef, number 23 on the menu, which is served on a “hot plate” with masses of vegetables and new potatoes, somewhat of a rarity here in Spain! The beef is incredibly tender and just melts in your mouth, and in all the years of us eating here, it has always been the same quality. The proprietors are South American, Chilean, I think,

and the décor is very much in that theme, creating a nice cosy ambience. The portions are huge, so go easy on the starters! A nice salad to share is what we find ideal, but nothing too heavy. If you are going as a group, and all having the No 23, then I suggest just ordering 3 meals between 4 of you, you will still have plenty, trust me!

Many of the local businesses helped the day by sponsoring the various activities. With temperatures touching the 30´s, nothing was left to chance for everyone to enjoy a fun day for the whole family. From the Harley Davidson display to hundreds of children

queuing to have their faces painted, the competition for who could eat the most “Hot Dogs” in 3 minutes, a Bucking Bronco, a beauty “Pin Up” competition; all were well attended. Some of the local companies thanked the efforts by Diner to bring people to the area and for the partaking companies to get to know each other. Certainly well worth repeating next year was the overwhelming feeling everyone had.

They also offer chicken in the same format, with the veg on the hotplate, or just grilled veg, which is a huge portion of around 10 different vegetables and tastes superb. Every table is greeted with a Limoncello upon arrival and again after the meal, a nice touch. They offer an outside terrace for the warmer nights, but inside has a great atmosphere, and it is always advisable to book as it gets very busy, especially after 9.00 pm. Pricewise, expect a bill of around 65 euros for 2 people including a bottle of very acceptable house wine.

We cook all our plates, with a tiny bit of salt from the Island, A few drops of Mediterranean olive oil, and very good fish from our coastal waters. Everything with a dressing of Sunshine from our Land.

Meson la Rueda has been a firm favourite amongst our friends and family over the years, and our visitors always ask us” when are we going to the beef place?” Worth a try if you have never been, I promise you!

RIGGERS & SAILMAKERS IN MALLORCA!!

MYANMAR TEAK EXPORT BAN HITS YACHT INDUSTRY The ban comes into force on April 1, 2014 A ban on virgin teak wood exports due to come into force on April 1, 2014 in Myanmar (formerly Burma) means that the luxury yacht industry will in many cases have to find alternatives to teak flooring.

Carol Allen, Certifying Authority Administrator for and on behalf of International Institute of Marine Surveying Direct: +44 (0) 23 9231 3010 Main: +44(0) 23 92385223 ca@iims.org.uk www.iims.org.uk A sails, rigs and rigging seminar organised by the IIMS but open to all. As 75 per cent of virgin teak is sourced from Myanmar, the ban will see a huge drop in supplies that other producers such as India, Thailand and Laos can make up for, according to a report on Quartz.com. This ban poses a real challenge to large luxury yacht builders. A number of suppliers are already experiencing difficulties securing sufficient supplies, as in the lead-up to the ban there has been some hoarding of supplies and restrictions on supplies from other countries in the region. The price of teak has also been rising and once the ban is in place it is anticipated to rise much more. The trade is worth at least $500m a year to Myanmar’s economy. Not only will the ban see this reduced, but it will also lead to the loss of several jobs. The US and Europe have had import bans for a number of years, but sanctions on importing teak were lifted last year. The main markets for Myanmar’s teak exports are India, China, Vietnam and Thailand, which are big importers. There has developed a large illegal logging industry and this will likely continue

because Myanmar only has limited resources to combat illegal loggers. The reality is that once logged it is very difficult to judge where the teak has been sourced from. A number of European teak deck suppliers said they had not experienced difficulties in securing supplies, but the price has risen over the past year by 15-20 per cent. This increase is anticipated to go up at least another 20 per cent and possibly 30 per cent once the ban comes into force. Demand from the luxury yacht industry does not appear to have fallen, but with a reduction in supplies the prospects for those making synthetic decking must look stronger. Only the other day Dutch supplier Bolidt, which has been active in the superyacht market for 15 years, introduced a range of 10 colours of its products in a bid to strengthen its position in the superyacht market.

MATRICULATION TAX NEWS The Islander received the following email on Friday 20th September. Dear all, Please be informed that the bill regulating (among other issues) the Matriculation tax exemption for boats of any length affected to a charter activity has been approved today by the Treasury Commission of the Spanish Congress. In this regard, please be informed that the different parliamentary groups filed 4 amendments in relation to the article which establishes the mentioned exemption but only 2 of these amendments requested the removal of the proposed exemption. These 2 amendments were filed by the “Izquierda Plural” Group and by the Socialist Group. The reasons invoked by these parliamentary groups were: - The need to compensate environmental impact derived from this kind of activities. - The role of the matriculation tax in relation to the more polluting vehicles. - This exemption is not ethic, considering the current economic situation of Spain. - This exemption only benefits privileged classes. We consider that these arguments are quite demagogic and do not take into account the direct and indirect positive effects in the economy from a global point of view, i.e. direct and indirect employment, economic activity, wealth, income, deseasonalization and deconcentration of the

traditional tourism, etc., especially in tourist areas like the Balearic Islands and Spanish coast in general. Despite the above, these 2 amendments filed by “Izquierda Plural” Group and by the Socialist Group were rejected by the Treasury Commission, therefore the bill has been dispatched from the Spanish Congress to the Senate including the registration tax exemption exactly in the same terms as we initially anounced. It is expected that the Senate will receive the approved bill tomorrow. As the chosen bill procedure is urgent, the Senate has a maximum period of 20 days for the whole proceeding. In this sense, the bill is expected to be approved (the governing party –Partido Popular- has absolute majority in the Senate) should be approved by the Senate approximately next October 10th . Once the Law Proposal is approved, the text will be published in the State Official Gazette (BOE) and, as we indicated in previous emails, the Law will enter into force from the following day of its publication in the BOE. Consequently, we estimate that the Law will come into force about the third week of October.

There are very real dangers of severe food poisoning if caviar is not kept at the correct temperatures. Caviar Perlita, which is one of the most popular brands of

Caviar is available from our local yacht provisioners such as Delicioso, VSF and others. Perlita is also the official Caviar of Nikki Beach who, along with Michelin Star restaurants in the Balearics are very happy with the quality and consistency of Perlita. It is produced in France using a Siberian Sturgeon under very strict conditions ensuring its quality, and authenticity.

+34 697 914 233 info@finestbedlinen.com www.finestbedlinen.com Calle Caro 9, Santa Catalina It seemed a long way off, but refit season is fast approaching. In a few short weeks guests will be leaving and crews will be waving goodbye to owners. Home & Yacht Finest Bed Linen have some pointers on how to beat the stress. Major refits or just simple replenishments all bring stress and headaches. Now is a great time to get ahead and prepare for some of those tasks. Start by noting how guests and owners actually use the boat, how they like the bed made, and their towel preferences, do they need laundry and lingerie bags, what toiletries they prefer, etc. Making a note as you go about your daily routine will make you aware of what needs re-ordering, what is lacking or what items are just not working. Armed with this list of what needs replacing you are one step ahead and by doing this during an actual stay or charter gives you a real perspective of what will need to be done in refit. Bedding does go missing,

standard fitted sheets don’t fit irregular beds, towels can fade or shrink and mattresses & day covers will need replacing but these can often be the last to be considered during refit – sometimes only days before departure as they have been in storage. However, Home & Yacht Finest Bed Linen understand that these are the items that the guests and owners see and come into contact with daily and therefore have to be in tip top condition. If you are thinking of replacing bedding and towels and you are able to run some ideas past the owner it’s worth giving some thought to the design and colours. Do they need updating? Does the current design fit in with the refit design? Is the design working with housekeeping? We often see piping and embroidery on pillows and towels that has shrunk or is causing problems with ironing. These problems can all be avoided without compromising the look of the final item. Spending some time now and preparing your check list, could save you from some major headaches later.

A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN BEACHES AND BOATS…

We live on a giant limestone island thrust out of the sea, along with Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, millions of years ago. Known as the “Island of Pines” by the Romans who came here in 123 BC, we love it because away from the resorts it is still an ancient place, where pinewoods cling to the shoreline, fishing boats set out at dawn and the fields produce fine wines, fabulous fruit and vegetables, the famous local pork and delicious lamb. In spring wildflowers compete with almond blossom to fill the senses.

Albion’s customers are usually visiting enthusiasts who book for a few days touring, but the trips are increasingly popular with yacht crews and captains with motorcycle licences who get out to enjoy the interior of the island with Albion’s knowledgeable and affable guides. “Many of our crew guests have not really had the chance to explore the interior of the island” says Albion’s English founder and bike enthusiast Hugh Birley. “They work and live on the boats and even the ones who have houses on the island don’t have much time to really get under the skin of it all. I’ve had guests who’ve been here for 3 years who have been amazed at some of the places we take them to, and it’s opened up whole new vistas for them and their families. Some even ask us to tailor surprise itineraries to include birdwatching stops, local markets, beaches or special restaurants”.

All this makes for an unforgettable motorcycling experience, especially when most of Northern Europe is still battling the cold and damp of winter. Albion Motorcycles, established here a year ago near Calvia, offers a collection of immaculate British, Italian and German classic motorcycles – Ducati, BMW, Triumph, BSA, Moto Guzzi, Vincent – for fully guided tours of the island and selected rentals.

The craggy spine of the island, the Tramuntana mountains, provide stunning views and challenging roads before they slope away to the gently sweeping routes that cross the windmill-dotted central plain. Here, secret villages and intimate rural landscapes are never that far from the sea – and with 554km of coastline to explore, even those with many miles of touring behind them will find plenty to keep them interested.

Check out the bikes, prices and more at www.albionmotorcycles.com If you come here with a boat you probably know a bit about Mallorca, but you may wonder why people come here from as far as the USA to ride motorcycles.

IRISH HANDYMAN

Two Irishmen were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking up. A blonde walks by and asked them what they were doing Paddy replied, ‘We’re supposed to be finding the height of this flagpole, but we don’t have a ladder.’ The blonde took out an adjustable spanner from her bag, loosened a few bolts and laid the flagpole down. She got a tape measure out of her pocket, took a few measurements, and announced that it was 18 feet 6 inches. Then, she walked off. Mick said to Paddy, ‘Isn’t that just like a blonde! We need the bloody height, and she gives us the length.

BENETEAU PREDICTS GLOBAL MARKET GROWTH

At the Beneteau group’s traditional press conference at the Cannes Boat Show yesterday, group board president, Bruno Cathelinais, put forward his view on the world leisure boat market that has “fallen 50% since September 2008”. The figures he commented showed a drop in the global yachting market of between €12,200bn in 2008 and €5,700bn in 2013. Speaking to a packed audience Cathelinais said market growth will come mainly from the US whose market “after serious contraction, has showed positive signs in 2013. We are convinced that 2014 will see improvement in the American markets, kick-started by new growth in emerging economies. These two markets will be able to offset the continued weakness in Europe which dropped 25% in 2012, with an estimated fall of 15% in 2013. Our projections for 2014 are -5%, which we estimate will be the lowest point.” Cathelinais believes that the US and emerging countries will offset the bad European results so that global market growth will be two to three per cent next year, with a global potential of reaching €9,200bn by 2020. “The only unknown factor is just when Europe will start its upturn,” he said. The economic situation has

totally changed the positioning of the French group. In 2008 the world leader in sailing boats had a motorboat range and associated classic products which was solely for Europe, which meant it was limiting itself to only 40% of the world market. “In these bad times, our new strategy since 2010 has been to reach out to 80% of the market by developing our ranges and our international distribution network. This plan required very heavy industrial investment of between €70 and €100m a year. We were the only ones to make such investments and we were able to do so on account of our positive financial position.” New factories were opened at Monfalcone in Italy and Angra dos Reis in Brazil. Turnover for the group geographically traditionally came 80% from Europe, 7% from the US and 3% from emerging countries, and 10 per cent from the rest of the world (ROW). Forecasts for 2013 show it will be 58 per cent from Europe, 15 per cent from the US, 19 per cent from emerging countries and 8% from ROW. And by 2020 projected figures are 45 per cent from Europe, 25 per cent from the US, 25 per cent from emerging countries and 3 per cent from ROW (Pacific, Middle East, Africa).

AMERICAS CUP UPDATE

Justin Chisholm www.sailracingmagazine.com

Well thanks a bunch Larry Ellison! What are we supposed to do now you have turned us all into adrenaline junkies with your AC72 speed machines? As predicted, the negativity surrounding the lack lustre one-sided early engagements in the Louis Vuitton Cup was utterly vaporised by the incredible contest between Ellison’s Oracle Team USA and Grant Dalton’s Emirates Team New Zealand in the main America’s Cup Final. Sailing fans from around the globe have tuned back in in their hundreds of thousands online, to see how the matchup between the two best professional sailing teams in the world would play out. We weren’t to be disappointed. From the very first leg of the opening race it was clear that we were in for a battle of titanic proportions, as the American and New Zealand boat screamed across the first reach bow to bow at 40 knots or more.

I don’t know about you, but my heart was in my mouth as Oracle helmsman James Spithill slashed the bows of his catamaran across the stern of the Kiwi boat as they reached the three boat length circle. Downwind too there was nothing in it as the Oracle crew silenced the critics who said they would never be able to match the New Zealander’s ability to foiling gybe. Then, unbelievably, the race went up a gear on the windward leg, as Oracle pulled off the first passing manoeuvre of the entire 34th America’s Cup and got the home crowd up on it’s feet and cheering. And so it went on throughout the early part of the series. Sure, New Zealand were the dominant team in terms of the points, but in almost every race the result was in doubt at some point. As I write this at 14.00 hrs( BST) on Tuesday 24th September, the result is hanging in the balance. Remarkably, Oracle has pulled the score back from 8-1 to 8-6, with the winner being the first to score 9 wins!! The Kiwis are still on match point, as they have been for almost a week now, but in terms of the on the

“Image by Carlo Borlenghi/Luna Rossa Challenge 2013” water results, the teams are equal, as Oracle started with a 2 point penalty for their misdemeanour’s as described last month. Certainly the momentum is with Oracle having won 5 races on the spin. The big turning point has coincided with the introduction of Sir Ben Ainslie as the tactician aboard Oracle, replacing local hero John Kostecki. His influence and more aggressive strategy has had a dramatic effect on the performance of the home town team much to the delight of the growing crowds of spectators. He was in a similar situation in the Olympics in Weymouth last year in the Finn Class, when he recovered from a seemingly impossible position to fight back to claim the Olympic Gold in the final race. Will we see history repeat itself? So here we are with a possible end to the event later today, or, we could be faced with 3 more races, and the America’s Cup going to a last race shoot-out between the two best pro racing teams in the world. A perfect scenario for the neutral and the event as a whole, after all the negative vibes and tragedy which we have suffered earlier in the competition. If the Kiwis manage to close out the series and win, what will Dalton elect to do with the event? We will all need to be patient for a while it seems, as Dalton say he plans to begin by consulting with the all the

“Image by Carlo Borlenghi/Luna Rossa Challenge 2013”

parties who have shown an interest in challenging him for the 35th America’s Cup. First to bend his ear will be Patrizio Bertelli as head of the Italian Luna Rossa syndicate who became the official Challenger of Record for AC35 shortly after the final race in San Francisco. Interestingly, amongst others, Dalton says he has also been talking to a “strong American syndicate not Oracle”. The only certainty if the cup goes south, unfortunately seems to be that we have seen the last of the AC72s, which Dalton has likened to the now defunct Concorde airplane captivating performance, but ultimately commercially unviable. Dalton’s slightly confusing preference is apparently for “a smaller monohull or a very fast multihull” but he says he will be swayed by what any viable challengers have to say. “I am not just going to tell them, that’s not the right way to do it,” he says. “I want to know what the world wants to sail.” However, if the miracle come back happens, and the Cup stays stateside, will Larry Ellison stay involved and insist on the further development of these AC72 beasts? Who knows what he will decide, but the success of the finals may incline him to stay with a development of these rocket ships, but the question is, will anyone else want to play?
