dear islander One of the things I have looked forward to each month ever since we changed the layout and front-page design of The Islander a year ago is choosing the cover page photo. The one selected for this month I am extra proud of, as I was driving the RIB while Colin Squire hung off the swim platform up to his neck in water, with a condom stretched around the body of the camera to waterproof it. (Yes its true!) Try explaining to the wife why the boat is full of used condoms when you have been out ‘chasing yachts’ all day! Next I think it’s appropriate to use some of this space to mention the 30th Boat Show Palma. (Note the new name… no longer Salon Nautico de Palma!) We wrote about it quite extensively last month, you will see mention of it in this issue, and lots of other places over the next few weeks. I have heard people speculating that it’s cancelled again, or that it’s not going to be happening for this or that reason, or it’s going to be in Alcudia etc. etc. Trust me, they are all wrong and it is most definitely taking place right where it always has done, at the old port in Palma from the 1st to 5th May.

Peter Franklin The Islander Nautical Media S.L.

Major changes have taken place: The show is shorter by 5 days and more dynamic in its daily opening hours, it has a Superyacht Brokers show and a superyacht forum running alongside it.

Villa J, Mar del Sur Francisco de Goya Nova Santa Ponsa 07180 Mallorca Baleares, España

The Palma Vela Regatta will be duelled out in the bay over the same days with 120 great racing yachts and 1500 crew flying in for the event. Then there is a Tapas evening, a film festival, a golf day and a fun filled Sunday with RIBS, Beach buggies and helicopter rides involved. We have to prove to the outside world that we can actually do all of this and put on a boat show to be remembered. People will not flock to Mallorca’s shores in their thousands so easily after last years let down, we all know that! But they will in future if we prove the point in May this year. We need the support of everyone in the Spanish/Balearic yachting sector to achieve that. And the future will be brighter for all of us, by having a world class annual Palma Boat Show! w

nautical book review

The Marina- Sustainable Solutions for a Profitable Business is an indispensable resource for developers and designers as well as those involved in refurbishing existing properties and anyone considering a career in the multi-billion dollar marina business.

boat show in algarve

www.marina-publications.com paul@marina-publications.com

For further details, please contact Sofia Canelhas of GL Events +351 962053104 _ scanelhas@glevents-portugal.com

It gives detailed information on what a marina developer/ designer should consider when designing a new marina. This comes from experienced entrepreneurs and industry insiders, who can count among their accolades the design, construction, development and management of some of the world’s best and most iconic marinas.

The Vilamoura Boat Show, now in its fourth year and the largest in-water boat show in the Algarve, takes place on the 27th to the 31st March.

The authors, Ralf Heron and Wael Juju demonstrate throughout the book that success will come to marinas that embrace the hospitality ethos and design their facilities to provide an exceptional customer experience. In addition to compiling data that will be not found elsewhere – including global marina maps (showing 17300 marinas), the book explores in some depth the environmental issues in siting and designing marinas. The 167-page book also covers, quality management and ISO Certification for marinas. It explains in detail the benefits and shows the way to attaining certification. Marinas globally, more than any other industry, have been slow to adapt this important tool, to show customers, that “this ISO certified marina” delivers best possible customer satisfaction. From a management perspective the reader is guided through the complexities of adopting leading edge information technology solutions and the need for certification to the ISO 9000 suite of standards. They will learn of the importance of applying hospitality management principles to marina operations and how to provide the superior level of customer experience that will make a marina a desirable location for boat owners. The Book will be available in the following languages: English, Spanish, German and Chinese.

Portugal has hundreds of kilometers of coastline, stunning beaches and perfect weather conditions all year round. The Vilamoura boat show brings together the leading brands and manufacturers, including Sunseeker, Cranchi, Hanse, Azimuth, Sea Doo, Ferretti, Pershing and Atlantis, with over 50 yachts afloat in the Marina. In addition there will be the latest in marine equipment and leading brands of yachtware on display on the stands surrounding the marina. The show is open from 10:00 till 20:00 every day from the 27th to the 31st March.

our oceans our future

Erica Lay _(+34) 673 55 76 76 erica@elcrewco.com _ www.elcrewco.com Hello readers. Cold, isn´t it? On days like this the only thing I want to do is stay indoors with the fire on eating roast pork with two pairs of socks on. However summer is coming (hurry up, I say…) and I´m looking forward to balmy evenings outside with friends, chucking a fish on the Barbie and enjoying a nice cold glass or two of white wine. Which leads me to wondering what I should or should not be eating. For those of us who live or holiday on the Med, the image conjured up in most minds is of sitting by the sea eating seafood. But is there much left out there we should be actually eating? There is no doubt that the unique character of the Mediterranean sets it apart. It also makes the problem of regulation a complex one. A semi-enclosed sea, the Mediterranean has a very narrow continental shelf. Estimates are that only around 5% of its surface area has a sea-bed less than 50 metres deep. Most plant and animal life is concentrated in these shallow seabeds, which is why coastal fisheries are so important. Mediterranean fishing is mostly small-scale: 80 per cent of the fleet is made up of small vessels less than 12 metres in length. Fishing often follows traditional lines and provides the economic impetus for entire local communities. This is particularly true in Andalusia, southern Italy and the Greek islands. Another important factor is that, apart from tuna and swordfish, the Mediterranean catch tends to be a ‘multi-species’ one: that is, fishermen do not go after a particular species, but catch a number of different species which live in the same grounds. I just read a pretty shocking statistic – More than 70% of the world’s commercial marine fish stocks are either fully exploited or overfished. I had a look online at the guides already in existence for the Med and was horrified to see that one of my favourites is on the “don´t eat too much of this” list. Octopus. ARGH. I do love a bit of pulpo a la gallega you see. In fact there seems to be an awful lot on the endangered list and we should all have a look and do our part. Red tuna, cod, swordfish and monkfish should be avoided until we sort our seas out. Even sea bream and sea bass are on the “eat in moderation” lists – the staples of the Spanish summer diet. Looks like a tough slog ahead for the Med governments, I haven´t got room to go into subsidies and the financial hardship of the fishermen involved but maybe next time. Fortunately on the eat all you like list I found oysters, mussels and clams so it looks like I´ll just have to switch to drinking cava with this lot and continue living the high life for the forseeable. See? Always a silver lining….

palma yachting forum

More info, contacts & bookings: www.talkyachtspalma.org or for mobile devices: m.talkyachtspalma.com Confirmed for 1st to 3rd May 2013, with an impressive attendance list of specialist participants and leading authorities from the superyacht world, The Palma International Yachting Forum is firmly written into the early season calendar of nautical events. Apart from a comprehensive website giving complete details of the forum, there is now a mobile device app which can be downloaded for free including all the required information on the venue and program, plus an instant booking form. Numbers will be restricted to 120, and with just 10 weeks to go the organisers advise booking now to avoid disappointment. Running alongside the 30th Boat Show Palma, which itself is hosting an impressive line up of over thirty +24 metre luxury boats in the first ever Palma Superyacht Brokers Show, the forum will cover a varied range of key subjects concerning the administration, technical management and ownership of large commercial yachts. The forum managers, Patricia Bullock and Peter Franklin, say that they have created a five day program, which will enable overseas visitors to not only benefit from participation in the interactive workshops, but to also to enjoy Palma de Mallorca outside of the forum session hours. This includes networking lunches, cocktails and a paella dinner all interspersed within the agenda, and a friendly one-day golf competition at the Jack Nicklaus designed Puntiro golf course on Saturday 4th May. For those staying over the weekend there will be free entry to the boat show, and a unique ‘Rib,Ride ‘n’ Rotor’ rally on Sunday 5th May. This will give up to 100 people an opportunity to see the best of Palma and its surroundings in three ways.....Across the bay in a high speed RIB, some off road driving in a fleet of Karmann buggy cars, and a helicopter ride to view the port from the air. All in the same day, and for one special all-inclusive price! These weekend fun events will be offered exclusively to forum participants who book before the 21st March. After that they will be made available to the wider yachting fraternity if any places are still free.

But meanwhile more control, more investigation, more investigation on possible, and impossible Matriculation Taxes, and now for tax residents also the obligation to inform of all goods and assets held outside of Spain. The Law 7/2012, that adopts new finance anti fraud regulations, (Ley 7/2012, de 29 de octubre, de modificación de la normativa tributaria y de adecuación de la normativa financiera para la intensificación de las actuaciones en la prevención y lucha contra el fraude) obliges all Spanish Tax residents companies and individuals to declare, disclose and specify - no matter if taxable or not – all kind of goods and assets outside Spain higher than 50.000 euros. Olá Amigos! It’s really quite magical here at the moment, the almond blossom has taken over and it looks like confetti falling from the trees! The marinas are already getting very busy with visitors, has silly season come early this year?! Anyway, the big news here at the moment is that a Portuguese rower is attempting a solo Atlantic crossing from the Algarve to Brazil. On 24 February José Tavares sets off in his 7.2m rowing boat (which, I have to say, is a rather strange looking craft!) from Lagos Marina on his four month, 5,000km solo adventure to Natal, Brazil. On his travels José, will sail to Morocco, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and onto Natal arriving some time in June. You may be wondering why on earth somebody would think it’s a good idea to row across the Atlantic to Brazil - alone. Well, on his blog he says that he carries an important message about sustainability. To find out more, follow José Tavares’ Atlantic adventure at http://paraguacu2012.blogspot.pt On 5th March, The 2013 Extreme Sailing Series starts from Muscat, Oman. Now in its seventh season, the award-winning and adrenalinefueled global series has given the sport of sailing good old spring clean. Bringing the action closer to the public with Stadium Sailing, putting guests at the heart of the race and dramatically increasing the speed on the water, the creators of the Extreme Sailing Series™ have set new standards, both in terms of high level competition and entertainment. We look forward to seeing them in Porto in July, they will also be visiting Singapore, Qingdao, China, Istanbul, Turkey, Cardiff, UK, Nice, France and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ciao for now from Portugal, a place where beef is beef with no added horses!!

technology update

Roger Horner - E3 Systems (+34) 971 404 208 info@e3s.com www.e3s.com What are we likely to see in 2013? In the fast moving world of electronics and communications, 2013 promises to continue with the relentless growth and evolution of new devices, new systems, applications and ideas. Cell phones The smartphone market is always a leading barometer and in recent years it has come to represent a tsunami of new products and services. It provides a good indication of the state of the industry. The success and growth of certain manufacturers has seen Samsung emerge as the dominant force. Having taken the top spot from Apple in the smartphone market, it is now set to compete head to head with the fallen star Nokia in the feature phone, low-cost, third world markets. We will see the on-going jostling for position of the dominant companies. As can be seen by the fall in their share price, Apple are beginning to suffer from having been too dominant for too long. Loyal users and shareholders have got a little fed up of being asked to buy a new but similar product too regularly and by their big brother attitude by making their services inflexible and not portable. They are no longer the new kids on the block. Research in Motion (RIM) have re-launched their company as Blackberry. I think 99% of the world knew them as Blackberry anyway, so that’s no big deal but they have learned a lot and put all that into their new Blackberry Z10 phone which is pretty cool. There has never been a more important release for Blackberry, as the future of the company really rests on whether or not this handset is a commercial success. Plugging the data drain The second focus will be the emerging 4G and 4G LTE technologies. From our experience in Antigua this winter with the launch of the new 4G LTE from Digicel, the take-up will only be limited by supply. It is not lightning fast, but it is faster than your home or office cable ADSL connection. It’s simple, easy, flexible, fast, with huge data limits and it’s as cheap as chips! We don’t think the eventual price in Europe will be quite as low as the launch price by Digicel in Antigua this winter but it will be considerably cheaper than satellite services. To give you some idea the cost of data per Mbyte via satellite over a VSAT is around US$20 and in Antigua via 4G LTE it is US$0.002. That is 10,000 times cheaper!

There are plenty of other new satellite service developments. The first will start appearing in 2013, but none will be complete by the end of 2013. For the aficionado this includes Ka, Ku VSAT. However we may have some flexible yacht Fleet Broadband contracts that should be available in 2013, which will be ideal for the big sailing yachts. So, based on the fact that the current 3G/HSPA+ and emerging 4G and LTE technologies are much faster, with higher data limits and at such low prices, we predict that a vessel that moves will now rely on a whole series of different connections. Vessels are already starting to look for multiple connections with a system that allows the faster, flexible and cheaper services to cut in as soon as they are in range. In 2013 this can be managed automatically. Managed Services The old business model of the communications industry is of a single provider, such as a single satellite service provider, owning and controlling all of the assets needed to deliver the service. But in the digital world, that model is quickly being eclipsed by approaches where groups of partners collaborate to provide components of the overall service. Since the quality of the overall service depends on how well these component services, such as VSAT, 3G, 4G, Inmarsat and wi-fi all fit together, creating and sustaining successful partnerships is fast becoming an essential skill for the new overall service provider for 2013. The component services come from an ever wider circle of providers and may include services from different providers such as numerous 3G and 4G providers, to cover a coastline, such as the Med and multiple VSAT providers to provide global cover, with connectivity, data management and billing from other providers. What exactly are managed services? Unlike outsourcing, which often involves simply transferring responsibilities to a third party, managed services are generally a ’black box’ approach, where you don’t get concerned about the detail of how something is delivered, you just focus on what is being provided. Perhaps the simplest example is an electricity service – all you care about is that you have electricity in your home at the price agreed. You’re really not interested in the current, the voltage, the frequency or how the electricity is generated and transmitted. Communications services are another good example, you don’t need to know how it works, all you just want to know that you can do what you want to do, when and where you want to use it, and at the price agreed.

Trends to watch out for in 2013 So with the stage being set for faster and more reliable connection speeds and a new generation of mobile products and services, what will the potent combination of social and mobile bring in 2013? Your mobile wallet – but don’t lose it! Increasing amounts of our life will be controlled with our mobiles in 2013. One by one, bank cards, loyalty cards, travel cards and boarding passes are being sucked out of our physical wallets and becoming integrated into smartphone software. This will be very convenient, but losing your mobile would be disastrous. Social media high-profile prosecutions Lord Justice Leveson has called for new laws to end what he calls “mob rule” and “trial by Twitter”. Expect to see more unsuccessful attempts by politicians and lawyers to tame the internet, but also a gradual realisation that what is said on social media is not beyond the law. Mobile and social news A trend to watch in 2013 is the growth of social video services like ThisNewsNow - a mobile-first service with a focus on short viral videos and a new informal style. Digital addiction clinics? I am sure there will be new opportunities in 2013 for internetfree rural retreats, or sessions to relearn the art of conversation, reading and quiet reflection. Mobile controlled accessories This year the phone will start to control what we see and what we wear. Google Glass and Vuzix are essentially mobile computers in your glasses that take augmented reality to the next stage. Face recognition linked to Facebook or LinkedIn can provide an instant biography at a party or at an exhibition, saving much embarrassment or providing useful lines for a potential business opportunity!

Dr. Ken Prudhoe - Club de Mar Medical Centre (+34) 639 949 125, drken@clubdemarmedical.com This rather wordy title makes more sense if you managed to read last month’s piece about Proficiency in Medical First Aid (MFA). The Medical Care Onboard Ship Course (MCOBS) leads to the most senior maritime medical qualification and used to be called Ship Captain’s Medical Course. These are the official names of the two medical qualifications needed by Captains and anyone delegated to be Medical Person in Charge. An MFA certificate is obligatory before trying for the MCOBS certificate and the MCOBS needs Updating every five years by individuals who are actually responsible for medical care at sea. All this was gone through in detail last month (see the online Islander if you missed it, and Google Marine Information Note MIN 385 (M) which is entitled “Proficiency in Medical First Aid and Medical Care Certification Requirements” to get the official MCA position). This month shines a light onto the differing emphasis and aims of each course which is very easily missed when the names look so similar at first glance. Broadly speaking, the MFA is about medical first aid and the MCOBS is about medical care. First aid covers immediately life-threatening situations needing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and electrical defibrillation. This can arise, for example, with collapse after a heart attack or due to severe choking or near-drowning and regular practice is essential to keep the skills literally at the finger-tips. We spent a very stimulating few days in Oporto, Portugal, in December 2010 at the European Resuscitation Council Conference on the CPR guidelines five year revision and have incorporated these changes into our own courses. The syllabus goes on to cover many conditions where there may be rather more time to respond such as bleeding and shock, management of burns, major and minor injury, head inwww.clubdemarmedical.com

Medical care, on the other hand, is more concerned with the care of individuals with a particular medical condition (new or pre-existing) as well as paying attention to diagnostic techniques, including some simple examination skills, and enlisting appropriate medical support when indicated. The medical conditions stretch from the head (meningitis, headache, epilepsy, stroke, mental ill-health, ear, eyes and dental problems) down to the chest (heart, lung and chest wall problems) and on to the abdomen (including the bowel and the urinary systems as well as the reproductive systems) and many others such as common infections including sexually-transmitted diseases and other lifestyle-related subjects like abuse of drugs and alcohol. We spend time looking at the medication used in a number of common and important conditions and reckon that it helps to have heard the unfamiliar names of drugs used at least once in the right context before being called upon to use the onboard inventory in earnest if the need arises. The practical sessions in our MCOBS course revise CPR and defibrillation and lead on to practical instruction in a variety of procedures such as monitoring vital signs, maintaining fluid balance, sterile and safe intramuscular injection technique, wound suturing (always popular!) and the use of oxygen. The Update refresher course is meant to emphasise any changes in guidelines and to give an opportunity to revise practical skills under supervision. For these reasons, the three day refresher course has to be at least 50% practical and is the minimum requirement for the 5 year updating of a Medical Care certificate. We get a number of students who stay on for the additional two days of the MCOBS course to widen their understanding but this depends on time available and on budgets! Managing death at sea is a regrettable course requirement which we keep for the last day of the MCOBS course but we seek to make this a bit less morbid and hopefully more useful by also applying the lessons learned on the course to symptom control in a seriously ill or dying patient. These five day courses are intensive. They are never going to equate to five years at Medical School but they do provide a knowledge base and skill set which could make all the difference.

At Club de Mar since 2007, Drs Ken & Rosemary Prudhoe provide a range of medical services to the yachting industry including:

Medical Care: General Practice medical care if you are unwell. MCA ENG1 Certification: Dr Ken is the MCA approved doctor.

boating safety

Acknowledgments to American Boating Association With a new season just around the corner, it’s not a bad time to remind ourselves of the all important safety aspects of choosing to work or play at sea. Professional crew and most leisure skippers have been through training to get their tickets, and undergone fairly comprehensive sea survival and first aid training along the way. But reminders of the dangers we face are never a bad thing, even though they might make unpleasant reading sometimes. In the UK of course they are holding out against compulsory training and licensing for leisure boaters, with the RYA managing to lobby successfully and convince the government that voluntary training is a lot more effective in terms of making the waters safe and properly navigated. This is a matter of opinion that would no doubt provoke a heated debate in any yacht club bar, but it does seem that the marine accidents reported in the UK are consistently lower than the average, which may be a difficult statistic to argue with. Not so in the USA it seems, where in the most recent year with complete data, the US Coast Guard reports that there were 4588 recreational boating accidents in the U.S. and its territories in which 758 lives were lost and 3,081 were injured. Seventy percent of the fatal accident victims drowned, and of these, 84% were reported as not wearing a life jacket. Eight out of every ten boaters who drowned were using boats less than 21 feet in length. BWI (Boating While Intoxicated) is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 16% of the deaths. Operators with a blood alcohol level of 0.10 percent (for most of us, that means just one to three beers) are 10 times as likely to be killed in a boating accident as a sober boater.

ritzi kitchen palma

Hungry Crews Hotline: (+34) 617 661 461 _ (+34) 649 668 183 Many yachts around the port of Palma, both home port regulars and visiting boats rely on local services near to the port for a multitude of things. But one thing that stands out as an absolute must when you’re alongside and everyone is busy, is a good hearty lunch for the crew. Better still sometimes, if a phone call can summons up the grub, and it appears on board in short order, with more than enough to fill empty stomachs. Leon McCance who runs the Ritzi Kitchen in La Llonja has been catering for that need for several years, supplying deep filled fresh made sandwiches, baguettes, bocadillos, wraps and several hot meal recipes. These can all be delivered to boats and offices around Palma for FREE! Leon himself hails from Coventry in the UK, and came to Mallorca arriving on New Years eve in 1999, seeking something different in life after working on dive boats in Israel for a few years. Working on a Palma building site for 3 years gave him the opportunity to learn Spanish/Mallorquin in the best way possible, by conversing with locals in every day discussion. After that an opportunity came up when his apartment landlord offered him a small coffee /sandwich bar called Café Baguette. Leon grabbed it by the throat, and with his ex girlfriend doing the cooking, they got themselves busy and earned the reputation that stands him in good stead with many yacht crews until today. During this time, Leon took cooking courses and studied food preparation in as many ways as he could, to prepare himself for a future in catering. Since 2003 his bike has probably done a few thousand kilometres taking ready meals to yachts and hungry crews! Since a couple of years ago Leon has taken over the kitchen at Hostal Ritzi, where he cooks breakfast and prepares customers orders for delivery during the day.

What about the remaining four deaths out of every five? Additional contributing factors were operator inattention, operator inexperience, excessive speed and other improper operation, improper lookout, poor vision, faulty equipment, inadequate safety systems and devices, limited or inaccurate local knowledge, and ignorance of basic rules of the waterway. The American Boating Association who we are grateful to for providing us with this information, encourages every boater to be serious about boating safety, starting with the proper kind and amount of boater training. They say; “Remember, a boating mishap or fatality often involves innocent people who share in none of the blame, but all of the consequence. As a responsible boater, the life you save may very well be someone else’s. Remember, before you go - B E S A F E”….Spelt out as below: Boat / Equipment / Safety devices & PFDs / Alcohol limits / First aid & emergency procedures / Environment (area & weather)

galley goddess What is with all the British press lathering themselves into a frenzy in the wake of the horsemeat scandal???? I can only say that I can’t believe it. I can understand public outcry when horse is paraded as beef, but, what, I ask is wrong with eating horsemeat? I mean, its not like Mr Ed, the talking horse is being carved up and served on a slab. Eating pork is perfectly acceptable, but what about little cutey pies, itsy, bitsy, little darlings, love them, wanna take one home for my very own Pot Belly pigs? Who loved the movie Babe? And, has anyone given a thought during this outrage that when you sit down in that lovely country pub on a rainy Sunday afternoon and order venison that you are actually about to consume Bambie? Well, Bambie´s Mum at least. Apparently, horsemeat has a slightly sweet taste reminiscent of a combination of beef and venison and becomes tenderer with age - sort of like my good self. So, I thought that I would include a fab recipe that you can stun all your friends with. Horse and Ale Pie - or - Beer and Black Beauty Pie 200g bacon rashers 2 onions, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 850g quality horsemeat 500ml real ale - John Smiths 500ml good beef stock 1 tbspn tom puree fresh thyme 2 bay leaves 2 tbspn cornflour blended with cold water 250g mushies, quartered Puff pastry Fry up the bacon strips with the onions, add garlic, cook and transfer to a casserole dish. Cut meat into 2.5cm cubes and fry in batches over medium heat until well browned all over - this will give your sauce a fabulous color. Chuck the horse in the dish with the other stuff. Deglaze the pan with half the ale, bring to boil stirring with get all the yummy stuff off the bottom. Pour over horse, add remaining ale, then the stock, tom puree and herbs, bring to boil then cover and cook in the oven for 2 hours. Good idea is to do this the day before. Remove dish from the oven, stir in the cornflour pastes and put it back for 5 minutes. Add seasoning and leave to cool. Fry the mushies in a pan, add to meat mixture, spoon everything into a pie dish. Roll out puff pastry and cover, brush with a combination of egg yolk and water. Pop in a preheated oven 180C for 30 mins. Yum, yum pigs bum, oh, no, horses bum.

master bates: overheard & overboard

Semper in excreta solum profundum variat

IMPORTANT NEWS: If you are travelling with Ryanair to Barcelona and the online booking offers you a transfer into the city for 12.00 euros.... DON’T DO IT!! Its just as cheap, a damn sight faster and less hassle with the A1 blue bus. I could relate my personal experiences with this wonderful new initiative from ‘the worlds favourite (NOT) airline’, but I start to shake, sweat and stutter profusely when I recall in my mind the nightmare that unfolded after I stepped off the 06.25 flight from Palma...Very early for an appointment in town, that I eventually ended up very late for....nuff said! Well, now that’s off my chest, what else can I have a good old moan about? Better make it a bit boaty I guess... Mmm, how about marina concessions, that’s a good one to get the blood pressure up and the old hackles rising isn’t it? Last month I wrote about the Ley de Costas (Law of the Coasts) being reworked, and how it should bring back some security of tenure for many marina operators, and yacht owners...maybe? But for now its a ticking time bomb which is giving a lot of owners and captains sleepless nights. Imagine you have a 35 metre yacht and you invested a million or so in a berth for it 10 years ago. You then got the news that its not actually yours to sell any more, so you can (unhappily) drop it from your investment portfolio. Fair enough... you’ve still got your plastic fantastic floating gin palace, and oh goody, you can still tie it to a couple of bollards worth half a mill each... whenever you want to! But now its all getting a bit sweaty, what Sir Alex Ferguson would call ‘squeaky bum time’ in football parlance. Why? Well that lovely long ten years of comfort and security is now down to only one or two. “Blimey that’s just over the horizon, within my planning radar arc,” says our owner. “Better get the skipper to nip into the marina office and ask what’s going on.” “Sorry boss”, pleads our hapless Captain on the phone later to his paymaster, “but they don’t know, or won’t tell... I’m not sure which.” “Well go back and ask em again, and get a proper answer this time”..etc etc” My point here is, that the Port Authority has to get a grip! They have to accept that they are a part of the nautical tourism revenue generating mix. There is no point in having fancy boat show booths, and highly paid marketing executives making flashy Powerpoint presentations, unless they get the basics in order. Their product is the waterfront and its shoreside facilities. They entrust it to others for a price, and then walk away from any real involvement, without helping to make it competitive. In other words...they are like a head disconnected from its body! So this guy walks into a crowded bar brandishing a shotgun and says; “OK, who the f**k has been sleeping with my wife,

the games up! A voice from the back of the bar shouts; “I don’t think you’ve brought enough ammo!”’ And so to the Spanish economy, not that I wish in any way to compete with my knowledgeable fellow columnist Phil D. Coffers. It has been said, that he will soon win some sort of award for his regular article in TI. They say it hits the nail so squarely on the head, and manages to see what an entire cabinet of ministers, and hoards of highly paid Euro economists seem to be totally myopic about! I did send him a snippet that I picked up on the internet for him to comment on, but his copy was already filed so he missed the opportunity. The quote was from the supposedly rock solid financial consultants Morgan Stanley, whose senior economist was quoted as saying; “”The next powerhouse of Europe who will have a German style industrial growth economy will be Spain.” Unquote... Now I am no bean counter, I struggle with managing the office tea collection every week, and it always seems to end up with some extra in my pocket...so stupid am I! But, I do see a marked difference in the way Germany goes about its business and has done for the last 50 years, when contrasted with shops closing for half the day, as 10,000 cruise ship passengers walk around bored, and their wallets stuffed with wonga! But what do I know? So I deferred to my learned friend Phil, who said; “When I worked in the city I had quite a few mates who worked for MS....and they always seemed to be pretty smart cookies....perhaps they asked the tea lady.” Phew, thanks Phil, I thought I was missing something! If you are planning a long weekend in Blackpool for your summer break this year, spare a thought for poor old X Factor creator Simon Cowell. He must be a fan of the 196-foot luxury yacht Slipstream, because the entertainment mogul has chartered it for the second year in a row to cruise around St. Barth’s. Cowell signed up for the luxury package, which includes a private chef, for $900,000 a week! Wouldn’t it be more prudent to buy a yacht at those prices? (Maybe not..perhaps buying a yacht isn’t really prudent at all....) The vessel was built in 2009 and is the largest to ever come out of French builder CMN Shipyard. It received the Nymphenburg prize of design at the 2009 Monaco Yacht Show and Best 40-65 meter Motor Yacht Award and the Best Interior Award of the International Superyacht Society. Not a bad lifestyle in return for making superstars out of karaoke singers!!! Did you know that Kuwait has more than 15,000 leisure boats registered, making it one of the largest leisure boat markets in the Middle East. The country currently has five marinas, and the recently held Kuwait yacht show featured dealers of Bombardier, Azimut, Sea Ray, Boston Whaler, and other top brands such as; Ferretti, Riva, Regal, and Bertram... One to watch? A few late classified ads to finish with: WEDDING DRESS FOR SALE. Worn once by mistake: Call Stephanie. COW FOR SALE NEVER BRED. Also 1 gay bull for sale. JOINING NUDIST COLONY! Must sell washer and dryer £100.

social / fun forum days

More details and booking information: (+34) 971 403 903 admin@networkmarineconsultants.com The organisers of the Palma International Yachting Forum that runs alongside the 30th Boat Show Palma from 1st to 3rd May, promised ‘much more than a forum’ in their early announcements about the event. By way of delivering on that promise they have announced the programme of social / networking events and fun activities that are taking place during the forum, and over the boat show weekend of 4th and 5th May. On 1st, 2nd and 3rd of May there will be sponsored networking breakfasts each morning, served on the covered patio of the Chamber of Commerce building where the event is being held. Another opportunity for delegates and sponsors to mix and interact socially will be during the tapas style lunch breaks, in the same location before the afternoon workshop plenary sessions begin in the 150-seat auditorium. On Thursday 2nd May there will be a networking cocktail evening at Cán Eduardo restaurant overlooking the port and the boat show site in Palma. After drinks on the terrace there will be a three-course dinner with a choice of three Paella dishes, wine, beer, cava etc. This is being offered at a special price of 50,00 euros per head, and local nautical companies are welcome to book tables, enabling them to join in the post forum atmosphere, and interact with some of the international delegates from the superyacht world.

superyachts at palma show

For more information please contact Jane Thompson: jane@mnconsulting.es _ +34 605 223 202 Six Yacht Brokers, all with offices in Palma, Mallorca, are organising the 1st Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show following on from their successful event “Mallorca Superyacht Days” held in Port Adriano last year. Burgess Yachts, Camper & Nicholsons International, Dahm International, Fraser Yachts, Northrop and Johnson and Ocean Independence have joined together to form the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA), which is behind this initiative. The Show will form part of the Palma Boat Show, held on the same dates, but will be exclusively for yachts with a minimum length of 24m. The location in the historical centre of Palma makes it within walking distance from some of the most exclusive shops, restaurants and hotels on the island. “It just made complete sense to combine our Superyacht Brokerage and Charter show with the Palma Boat Show. We are convinced that this new format will be a positive move for both events”, says Arne Ploch from Camper & Nicholsons International. BYBA has signed a three year agreement with the Balearic Islands’ Government, organisers of the Palma Boat Show, to consolidate Mallorca and in particular Palma, as a strategic centre for large yachts in the Mediterranean. Already well known for its impressive refit and repair facilities many international companies are choosing to open up offices here, which in turn, benefits Palma in general.

On Saturday 4th May after the forum has finished, there is a friendly and competitive golf day organised for the forum by local golf professional Peter Ledwidge. This will be at the spectacular Jack Nicklaus designed Golf Park Puntiro just outside Palma, with tee reservations for 40 players. There will be 1st,2nd and 3rd place prizes for the best players in the ‘TalkYachtsPalma’ Golf Challenge, and other goodies presented by local nautical companies. These will be awarded at a prize giving early evening cocktail on the clubhouse terrace overlooking the 18th green.

On Sunday 5th May there is something really worth staying in town for! A RIB,Road ‘n’ Rotor Rally that will allow visitors to explore Palma and its surroundings in three ways over the course of three hours. Leaving the Palma Boat Show site initially in high-speed RIB shuttles, these will rendezvous with a fleet of Karman off-road beach buggies, at a pre-planned point along the stunning coastline of the Bay of Palma. From here the lucky ‘rallyers’ will get a chance to off road and test their driving skills in the buggys. As if that’s not enough fun in one day, they will then be able to hop into a helicopter and take a 15 minute low altitude sky tour over the coast of the bay and the inland rural areas east of Palma. Drinks and snacks will be available at the rendezvous points, and after coming ’back to earth’ the RIB shuttles will return you to the boat show. Thanks to the efforts of Peter Ledwidge with the golf, Andy Leeman (Marine Superstore) and Russell Stevens (Mallorca Driving Club) with the rally, we have managed to make all of this fun possible at very competitive prices… 150 euros per person for the golf including green fee, prizes, drinks and snacks. (Only bone-fide golfers with their own set of clubs, max handicap 28 for men and 36 for women. Only yacht crew and marine services personnel). 190 euros per person for the RIB,Road ‘n’ Rotor Rally for the whole 3 hour unique experience.(No experience needed, and anyone can join providing they are physically fit). Places limited: Exclusively open to forum delegates booking before 21st March.

“Norma” “What Bates” “Can I say something about horse meat” “No” “But” “No buts Bates go on, b***r off I don’t think our fair readers need more pearls of your particular wisdom thank you” How is it that the minute new kit hits the street someone is is already upgrading it? What happened to the good old days where something was at least ten years old (ok perhaps a slight exaggeration) before you’d think of changing it? Not only do I get technically challenged with some of the new stuff on sale, worse still it seems three year olds hold degrees in technology; I also hold my hands up to not having heard of half the names that are around now. With brands like Nokia flagging falling rival to names like Samsung, Apple and HTC (“sod off Bates, yes of course I’ve heard of those”) even the good old Blackberry is trying to regain ground lost to the smartphone competition. Apparently the portable computer maker Asus announced it was gaining momentum having just sold more than one million notebooks, netbooks and tablets in the UK in 2012 - a whopping 176% growth. It seems the tech names and websites to look out for this year are Lenovo a Chinese computer hardware company, Huawei now the largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world, ZTE the fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, Qualcomm you might not have heard of them but the company’s technology powers a wide-range of mobile communication devices and smartphones with patents on a range of 4G technology, some more are Leap Motion, MakerBot, MySpace, this original social network was once the bees knees of the internet, it has now been “rebuilt, redesigned and reinvented, Branch/Medium created by Twitter co-founders Ev Williams and Biz Stone, the two independent sites can be accessed through your Twitter login. Vine a video-sharing site just launched by Twitter and Square another former Twitter persona Jack Dorsey is behind this mobile payment company. “Wadda ya mean Bates you miss the good old days of Compaq and Polaroid, you’ll be telling me next you sailed here in Noah’s Ark and that it was up there with the poor unfortunates on the recent “pooh cruise”! And for any of you follicley challenged chaps out there, especially if you are being subjected to some old wives tales - standing on your head gets more blood to your scalp…..before you attempt gymnast of the year (snort) scalp hair doesn’t thin because it is starved of blood. Not wishing to rain on anyone’s parade regarding bald men and testosterone.... ho hum…… some illusions are best not shattered so unless you’re a hair transplanting multi millionaire it seems once its gone its gone so chaps be proud of your barnet or lack of it! Go on then Bates what is it that you want to say about Horseburgers…… “Well old girl how many times have you heard someone say ´I could eat a horse´ well they should stop *****ing moaning about it then”!

running for dogs

Adopt a rescued dog in 2013

Article by Emm Millar www.dogsforu.org Growing up, I longed for a dog of my own but it was not to be. As an adult, my job as a chef on board yachts made it impossible to have a permanent pooch in my life. However, I was lucky enough to land a job with an animal loving family who always had dogs on board. I often ended my working day with two dogs sharing my bunk – somehow, they had always managed to snuggle in there before me!

Wintering in Mallorca, I missed their companionship and looked around for a way I could enjoy the company of dogs once more. As I investigated, I realised that not all the dogs on the island are pampered pooches with adoring families – many are in pounds and shelters waiting patiently for their special someone to come.

I discovered “Dogs For U”, who help abandoned and homeless dogs on the island – particularly large breeds and others that are harder to rehome: www.dogsforu.org

I knew this wonderful organisation needed donations to support their endeavours and then I read an article about a lady who had run a sponsored half marathon to raise funds for them. I thought: I could do that! Over the winter months, I had taken up running to keep fit and it had become somewhat of an obsession to go further and faster. Surely I could manage a half marathon? Training solo at first, I soon realised that I needed encouragement to succeed and that’s when trainer Jose Bertran entered my life. He has pushed me to my limits and beyond. Sprinting up and down hills, hundreds of push ups and more, much more! Finally, I’m ready for the challenge of the Palma Half Marathon on 17th March. Please join me in supporting DFU and improving the lives of dogs in need. You can sponsor me in the Half Marathon by contacting billiedogsforu@gmail.com or calling 971 14 23 11. The money we raise together will help fund vital kennel improvements. Let’s do it for the dogs!

stay fit for sailing

Katie Handyside - Personal Trainer (+34) 636 322 959, www.katiehandyside.com Coffee the most contaminated product Coffee can be used as both a brain booster, an anti Parkinson remedy and an enhancer of athletic performance. Not only does it boost cognitive responses but it also increases fat burning or thermogenic responses. Caffeine fat burning effects are further enhanced by the cold so don t forget that cup of coffee before you head out into the cold this weekend! Or plunging yourself into an ice bath! However using it to its full potential means choosing a high quality brand. Coffee beans can be both highly processed and full of mould and fertilizers. Coffee is grown en mass in countries with predominately lax controls on pesticides, once covered in chemicals, sprays and fertilizers the beans are, then either left out to dry in the sun where they are pooped all over by the birds, or pressed and left to ferment, quite often the beans are mixed with poorer qualities to form a “blend” all of which contributes to the build of mould and mycotoxins before being packaged up and sent off for consumption. Mytotoxins are damaging compounds created by molds, which grow on coffee beans (among other things). These compounds cause all sorts of health problems like cancer, hypertension, kidney disease and brain damage. Coffee is easily one of the largest sources of mycotoxins in the food supply. Safer Coffee beans that are those that are processed right after picking that use a processing that avoids any chance of fermentation, this is a more expensive process but safer because it dramatically reduces harmful molds or bacteria from impacting your health. 1. Never use decaffeinated. If you don t want the caffeine don’t drink the coffee. Caffeine is nature’s anti-insect and antifungal defense mechanism. They use it to deter mold growth and other organisms from colonizing the beans. Mold is in fact everywhere, but caffeine helps prevent it from growing on the beans while they’re in storage. Remove the caffeine and it’s like an open till to robber. 2. Never ever choose cheap, instant beans. These are moldier 3. Insist on wet process beans. Many higher end African coffees use natural process, which means they dry the beans in the sun, giving them time to mold. Wet process coffee uses far less time and rinses the beans, making for lower-toxin coffee. 4. Aim for Central American varieties grown at higher elevations where mold is scarce

yachtcontract.com arrives

More info visit: yachtcontract.com, or contact info@yachtcontract.com A new way for the yacht industry to do business. • Log on and post details of your contracts • yachtcontract.com alerts registered and approved contractors • You receive their bids • You choose the right contractor yachtcontract.com is a new website that is set to change the way the yachting industry goes about it’s business. Designed as a one-stop hub that encourages competition and transparency within the industry, the yachtcontract.com system puts work and equipment requirements out into the open market for companies to tender their best offers. For owners, yachts, yacht management companies and even shipyards who are offering work and looking for contractors to carry out projects, the service is completely free. They simply register on yachtcontract.com and post details of their project or requirement. The website automatically and instantly emails contractors specified by the yacht or, alternatively, all of the contractors registered on the site that are relevant to the requirement. Contractors respond to the projects they want to be considered for. The projects will invite either ‘closed’ or ‘open’ tenders, meaning the contractor’s proposal will be either private or open for fellow contractors to view. Once all possible proposals have been received, a winning proposal is selected, and the contractor is contacted directly by the yacht. Website founder John Stott comments: “This is good news for all yachts, particularly those who are having to be extra vigilant with their running costs, and it’s good news for contractors as well. It means the opportunity to quote on projects they may never have heard of through the traditional channels …the request to quote lands straight into their mailbox.” All Contractors receive a 3 Month FREE TRIAL after which they will pay a small monthly fee. Contractors can discuss and post questions on the Discussion Board prior to bidding on suitable projects and following completion of the project, both the yacht and the contractor will have the opportunity to post a comment on their experience (think Trip Advisor). John Stott comments: “The Rating System is a powerful tool that helps ensure the owner gets value for money and the contractors receive fair praise for their efforts. This kind of information will eventually become part of the selection process.”

This is just the first in a series of technology seminars we are planning.” The seminar runs from 9.00 am till 5.00 pm with lunch served in the members’ dining room. Tickets are €200 and are available directly from e3 Systems.

Roger that! Aigua Sea School has taken delivery of a new set of training radios for the Short Range Certificate (SRC) courses, including a VHF/DSC handheld radio. The new training sets will be an added bonus to the school’s classroom that already provides two different sets of training radios for their students during the one day VHF/DSC marine radio course. The ICOM M323 is a fully modified radio enabling the student to send ‘live’ distress and voice calls without calling out the Palma Coastguard! The leading RYA training centre has also purchased a IC-M91D VHF/DSC handheld training radio for use in class so all Aigua students can now practice on four different types of VHF radio to enhance their training. The VHF/DSC marine radio course is run in the new Technical Training Centre (TTC) of Aigua Sea School, which is opposite the schools’ HQ on C/San Magin in the ‘yachtie hub’ area of Santa Catalina in Palma. The TTC address is C/San Magin 69. All previous Aigua Sea School radio students are welcome to visit the school to practice on the new radio sets. Just call the school office to arrange a 20-minute ‘push the red button’ trial. Get ahead: changes from 1st April From 1st April 2013 anyone applying for a commercial endorsement to a Powerboat Level 2, Day Skipper or Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate must submit an acceptable First Aid certificate with their application form. Aigua Sea School runs the RYA Elementary First Aid course on a monthly basis. The RYA has published the definitive list of other accepted certificates. Please note the PADI First Aid course certificate is NOT on the list. PPR workshop The first of Aigua Sea School’s workshops for the PPR course (Professional Practices and Responsibilities), mandatory on all commercial endorsement applications, will run at the school’s new TTC on Monday 11th March. Places are limited and students are required to have registered and read all the modules prior to attending the workshop. Students wishing to attend but experiencing difficulty with registration are invited to visit the school office.

sponsoring the transat 650

For more details please contact: info@dominiklenk.de For his three-year-campaign onboard a 6.5 meter high-performance sailing yacht, Dominik Lenk is looking for sponsors. Alongside international sailing regattas, the highlight of the campaign is the 2015 Transat 650, a transatlantic solo race. The objective is to campaign a competitive yacht in the Classe Mini circuit and to achieve a podium position in the 2015 Transat 650. At only 23 years, Dominik Lenk is one of the youngest sailors in the mini-fleet, but also one of the most motivated: His choice of university was determined by its proximity to water and to his first Classe Mini regatta he travelled 400km overnight to recommend himself as a co-skipper. In the two seasons during his studies in Southampton, he raced more than 6,000 nautical miles and achieved podium positions in the Rolex Fastnet Race, Cowes Week, the Solent irc Series and the jog inshore and offshore championships. The next big goal is the biennial Transat 650, a transatlantic single- handed regatta in 6.5 meter high-performance yachts. The 4,000 nautical mile (ca. 8,400km) long course takes the competitors from Douarnenez, France to the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe with a pit stop on the Canary Islands.

dovaston crew show

For more info about exhibiting and attending visit: www.dovaston.com Every year since it began in 2009 Dovaston´s Crew Show has included an element of fundraising for charity. This year Karen Dovaston (pictured) has announced that the chosen organisation which stands to benefit will be Asociacion Ondine. The Asociacion was formed last year and aims to work with the simple vision of combining science, local communities and conservation to protect and improve local marine ecosystems around the Balearic Islands. Brad Robertson from the Asociacion said, “We are really delighted to have been chosen to participate in this year´s show. Not only does it give us the opportunity to raise some funds to put towards our various projects, but we will also have the chance to raise crew awareness about the Asociacion. We can´t thank Karen and Phil from Dovaston enough for inviting us!” The Crew Show which will be held on Friday April 26th from 4pm (entry is free) at Mood Beach in Portals has become an important fixture in the social calendar for the nautical industry: business representatives fly in from around Europe and the States to participate in the event alongside local marine businesses. Photo: Brad Roberston, Karen Dovaston, Bea Esparza, Phil Edwards, Gabriel Morey, Erica Lay.

The regatta was first held in 1977. Englishman Bob Salmon considered it a cost-effective alternative to larger races like the ostar. Today the Transat 650 is the largest single-handed offshore race in the world and is considered the test for future sailing talents. For Dominik Lenk the Transat 650 is not a one-off challenge, but a step into the right direction: the Vendée Globe, a non-stop regatta around the world, also known as the ‘Everest of the Seas’. To achieve this, he is a member of the Dutch Shorthanded Team, which provides transat- specific training and workshops on sleep-, food-, navigation- and project-managment. Even though the yachts are designed for the Transat 650, there is also an active offshore circuit with over 7,800 nautical miles of qualification races per year in France, England, Spain and Italy. The Transat 650 yachts are affectionately called Minis by the sailors. The design of a Mini is left completely open, as long as it fits into an imaginary box 6.5m long, 3m wide, 2m deep Jib, Rotating bowsprit, 2 asymmetric daggerboard to limit sideways drifting. Extremly light hull made from carbon fibre. Canting keel and 12m tall—a so called ‘Box Rule’. If this is the case and the boat passes the extremely stringent safety-checks, it is allowed to sail. Minis only weigh 700kg on average and reach speeds of up to 20 knots (ca. 40km/h) despite their small size. A large media penetration through radio, print and tv is guaranteed—past Transat 650 campaigns have achieved a roi-index of at least 4:1. Known magazines like the German ‘Yacht’, the English ‘YachtingWorld’ or the French ‘Course Au Large’ regularly write about the Transat 650 and its sailors. Over 2,599 articles were written about the 2011 race. The sponsored yacht — a mobile 150m2 big billboard — will be exhibited on international boatshows. A boatshow like ‘Boot Düsseldorf’ is visited by more than 240,000 people. Concise, personal messages in press releases can act as an amplifier: photos and videos are shared live through social media. Suddenly thousands of people can follow a race over the internet. This not only generates more traditional media coverage, but also facilitates the dialogue between audience, sponsor and sailor. The next two races are in September 2013 and 2015, and Dominik Lenk is planning for 2015, which he needs sponsorship funding for.

straight talk on the dosh

Phil D. Coffers The Islander Economics Correspondent We’re all in in together...right? Spain is in a mess, economically speaking, she has the highest unemployment rate in the developed world, 26% at the moment and almost certainly climbing. Her bright, ambitious young people, consigned to a bleak future are heading for the exits as they see no future for themselves here. The scientists, mathematicians, graduates, waiters, I.T specialists, constructions workers and all the rest are seeking opportunities abroad that do not exist on these shores and islands. This nation’s investment in its own future, will be the future of another country, and who could blame them for taking this radical step. They have no choice. Stay here and they face becoming part of a lost generation, move, and they at least have a chance. Spain is facing a mountain of debt that must be paid down at some point. Morally this must be paid by the generation that borrowed it, not differed and postponed to leave the following generation to pick up the tab for their parents excess. We all understand that to pay it back will take a bit of pain in the short term, but it is clearly the right thing to do. If the government is to receive the public support that it need to push through these painful measures, then it is going to need to do something about the sickening levels of hypocrisy that seem to infect all layers of the ruling classes here in Spain. The signs that belt tightening are beginning to hurt are everywhere in Spain, the lengthening dole queues, the fall in the numbers of mobile phone lines, the people asking for money on the street. Stories fill the newspapers of town halls running out of money to pay pharmacy bills, to pay teachers and police officers. Most sickeningly of all is the steady rise of suicides as people fall victim of the brutally efficient process of having their homes repossessed. While this is going on…there are currently 300 public officials nationwide indicted or under investigation for corruption. The King’s son in law is on trial in Palma for embezzling public funds for his own benefit, as the scandal threatens to engulf the King’s daughter the Princess Cristina, and maybe even the ‘boss’ himself before this story is told. Secret payments in brown envelopes and millions of euros in nameless Swiss bank accounts are close to the very top of the ruling Partido Popular, naming prime minister Mariano Rajoy specifically. Yet you hear no apology, no contrition, just poker faced denial against seemingly insurmountable evidence. Change is needed, but democracy works best from the top down, when it goes the other way, they call it revolution.

barcelona boat show 2013

www.firabarcelona.com The International Boat Show of Barcelona is starting to rev its engines for the 2013 edition. One of the first moves is the renewal till 2018 of the collaboration agreement between Fira de Barcelona, organiser of the event, and the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas (Anen). The agreement ratifies the model of the event started at the 2012 show, making Port Vell its sole venue and holding it in September. For the 2013 show, the chosen dates are September 24th to 29th inclusive, coinciding with the Mercè festival, in honour of the patron saint of Barcelona. The agreement was made official on Tuesday, February 19th, with a function in which the Director of the Barcelona Boat Show, Jordi Freixas, and the CEO of Anen, Alejandro Landaluce, participated. With this renewal of the Agreement, Anen maintains the role of highest representative and voice of the national nautical industry towards the Barcelona Boat Show, as well as its function as advisor in terms of promotion and development of the sector within the show. In 2013, the show will be held from September 24th to 29th, after a decision that ties in with the interests of exhibitors and the suitability of this slot in the international trade fair calendar. Furthermore, Tuesday the 24th is the Mercè, major Barcelona festival, whereby the event will also benefit from the city’s festive atmosphere. This year, the Barcelona Boat Show, founder member of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) and leading pleasure boating event in Spain, aims to deploy a strategic promotional plan geared towards to attracting foreign buyers, as well as placing special attention on social networks. In this sense, far beyond working on the development of the best business platform for national and international pleasure boating in Spain, the Boat Show hopes to become an event that, throughout the year, is a bridge linking the desires and needs of users with the most competitive range of exhibits from companies in the sector.

exclusive interview - antibes gears up for april yacht show the Professional Yachting Association is very active in getting across the key topics for the upcoming season to captains and crew. There will always be one or two seminars of interest to everyone and they are free to attend.”

For more information: www.antibesyachtshow.com When the Antibes Yacht Show made its debut in 2007, the cynical few feared it was “just another boat show”. However, now in its seventh year and considerably grown in size and quality from humble beginnings, exhibitors are forward booking stand space immediately at the end of the Show. So, in the face of enduring recession, what’s the secret of Antibes’ success? Show Communications Manager Muriel Pénoty has the answers. “It works on a number of levels but to start, the location makes good sense,” says Muriel, “Port Vauban is the largest pleasure marina in the Mediterranean, 1,800 berths for pleasure yachts alone, and most captains and crew are very familiar with their surroundings here. Secondly, we intentionally do not compete with the other South of France shows. Cannes and Monaco are mainly shipyard biased whereas we concentrate on ‘brokerage and charter’ with a heavy focus on refit and services. We attract a different crowd.” “Last, and perhaps most important, we are the only significant spring show in the Mediterranean. April is perfect timing for owners who want to sell before the season starts, buyers who want to get set for the upcoming summer and for charter companies to fill up their remaining slots. Cannes and Monaco are held within a fortnight of each other in September and are season closers. There was demand for the Antibes Yacht Show and we’ve proven that by going from strength to strength.” Antibes will claim a ‘first ever’ in 2013, the first Yacht Show to have a live auction at the event. Other shows have had silent or remote versions but nothing of this ilk. Organised by Tim Morley of Morley Yachts, in conjunction with professional auctioneers, the spectacle will take place on Saturday 20 April at 3pm on the Quai des Milliardaires. Not only does Tim have 20 plus yachts ready to feature but also a range of berths from Antibes, Port Gallice and Sanremo, and even a helicopter. The Star Deck at Stars ‘n’ Bars in the Port of Monaco will have a live feed to the auction allowing for phone bids and the full catalogue will be available via the Antibes Yacht Show website. 2013 will also have the most comprehensive seminar schedule experienced at the Antibes Yacht Show to date. Muriel continues, “We started small in 2007, but come 2008 and 2009 demand exploded so we had to set up a dedicated seminar area. In 2012 people stood outside craning their necks to hear so for 2013 we’ve doubled the area to 100m². The International Yacht Club d’Antibes offers its full support whilst the International Superyacht Society books a whole day’s worth of seminars. And, with rules and regs in yachting changing constantly,

“We’ll of course, as is tradition, have our special lounges available at the Show,” continues Muriel, “As well as VIPs and the Media we like to look after our Captains so they will have the Captains’ Lounge, a place to relax, enjoy complimentary lunch and drinks, before wandering around the Show and taking in the seminars of their choosing. The Crew Lounge, with its late afternoon happy hour, will be a very sociable and lively area as usual with plenty advice on hand from how to create the best CV to arranging flower deliveries for the boat. New for 2013 is a Chef Lounge where we’ll have a Michelin-starred chef imparting recipes and tips.” In 2011 a new Refit and Services division was added to the Antibes Yacht Show, a logical add-on to charter and brokerage and something the event is becoming famous for. In general refit is on the up in the South of France with shipyards constantly expanding and improving. Finally, Muriel was asked if the much maligned Spanish matriculation tax on charter yachts over 15 metres was playing into the hands of the French marine sector. “The French law and taxation system can be just as complicated at times so I really don’t think it makes a great deal of difference. My personal opinion is that those with yachts tend to have money, and with money you have the freedom to go where you like. People are not going to avoid Spain or Sardinia or wherever decides to introduce a new taxation law and start cruising in Tunisia instead. They will continue to go where they want, no matter what, so Spain and indeed Port Vauban will remain as popular as ever.” Eds Note: The Islander / Captains Lounge.TV will be official media partners and exclusive nautical IPTV coverage providers for the 2013 Antibes Yacht Show. yacht & captain: sy tenaz yachts so not too much demand for commercial courses other than STCW and ENG1. The industry is changing fast and I think that soon will be a thing of the past.” Q: At what point did sailing change from being a pastime to being your profession? A: “I was in NZ 1999 when I realised that there was a career to be made from what was for me, up until then, only a hobby. I was 23 and my eyes were opened to the industry by seeing the Viaduct Village in Auckland packed with yachts. I saw the opportunities for work and travel all combined with sailing.” Q: What yachts have you worked on before Tenaz? A: “I started on Sauvignon, a Little Harbour 58 then Tenereze, a Swan 57. Wendy Lynne a Farr 80 then Sapphire, a Hoek 100; Chimera, a Ted Fontaine 104, followed that , then Antares, a Dixon 40m, and so to Tenaz” Q: Best moments on board? Feature created by Linda Revill of Aigua Sea School Tenaz is an Ed Dubois designed 144ft sloop built in 1997 by the Pendennis Shipyard. Tenaz is a family yacht and extremely well-used and well-loved by the Ryan family who, in 2007, started an around-the-world-in-302-days adventure with First Mate Amy Galloway onboard, who later became the Captain. Leaving Palma in September 2007, Tenaz and her crew of six, family of five, and tutors for the daughters, visited countries from Tunisia to Turkey and from Mallorca to The Maldives. After the trip, Amy Galloway took over command of Tenaz and is her current captain. Amy started sailing as a toddler with her family and two older sisters and was passionate about dinghy sailing from an early age. (Whilst Amy still enjoys the thrill of a blast in an RS800, these occasions are few and far between as she is busy running Tenaz) Her father provided the basis of sound navigation when they were sailing together in Contessa 38s, Hallberg Rassey 31s and a classic 52’ wooden, long keel, yacht called Avalanche when spending summers cruising in the Baltics. Q: TI asked Amy how she got into yachting: A: “I flew to the Canaries with 2 friends, with enough emergency money for a flight home if needed, but not much more. We stuck our thumbs out for an Atlantic crossing on the ARC ‘98. We made it across to the Caribbean and met a lot of yachts and crew. That led me on to deliveries and finally ended up in NZ for the Americas Cup ‘99/’00.” Q: What steps did you take to get to where you are today in terms of qualifications, training and commitment? A: “I have been very lucky with the boats I have worked on: all great Owners who have been fantastic to work for. Longevity in each position has helped: giving continuity in crew, boats and jobs. In terms of qualifications I have mainly been on private

A: “The world cruise with the owners and family onboard. We sailed Tenaz 10Kms up a river in southern Borneo and saw Orangutans from the tender! The Palma Superyacht Cup is also a highlight.” Q: Worst moments on board? A: “When there are crew issues that build up and become difficult. Whether it ends in a firing or a discussion, both situations are very hard to deal with as the captain. You always feel you should have seen it coming and done something to prevent it.” Q: What is your favourite cruising areas? A: “Alaska: beautiful, tranquil and MASSES of fish!!!” Q: What would your advice be to someone just starting out in the industry? A: “Don’t demand or expect too much at the start: work your way up to earn respect and gain experience.” Q: Would you say that this is a secure profession? A: “18 months ago I would have said yes definitely. Today, the answer has to be no”. Q: What are the necessary personal attributes to be a successful Superyacht captain? A: “Organisation, patience and seeing the bigger picture: foresee issues before they arise, communication and realizing there are more than 10 ways to skin a cat!” Q: What advice would you give a female seafarer keen to get into the role of skipper? A: “The fact that you are a woman makes no difference to your capabilities. If you have the support of a good crew behind you there is no reason not to do it”.
