STP RECORD LIFT OUT During early May, STP hoisted the super-sloop Aglaia, the biggest yacht ever to have been lifted clear of the water in Mallorca. She also has the world’s second longest (at 83 metres) mast in the world. Speaking at a dock party organised in conjunction with Complete Marine Freight to celebrate the end of a long refit in the yard, Aglaia’s captain Marc Stevens, said that he considered that safety must come first for such a large vessel, and that is why he chose STP for hoisting this spectacular super-sloop. Marc also said that the yards location in Palma was a big advantage for sourcing parts, specialised services, storage and freight which had been organized mainly by locally based Complete Marine Freight. Safety measures are a core value for STP, whose premises have recently been upgraded to meet the highest standards of quality and innovation. Having worked with STP since 2008, Aglaia’s captain confirmed that he has every confidence in the STP team’s professionalism - all the more so since the intricate job of hoisting her was carried off successfully. After first being launched in September 2011 the sailing yacht moored at STP to have all the operations to improve the rigging mechanisms carried out, and now she’s been lifted out of the water for antifouling painting, work on her superstructure, and other servicing. STP-Servicios Técnicos Portuarios (Harbour Technical Group) is part of the IPM Group of recreational sailing sector companies in Mallorca, Ibiza and Valencia, which manages marinas and boatyards, including Marina Port de Mallorca and Varadero Valencia, along with others. CATCH THE WAVE The new training newspaper from Aigua Sea School is out now and packed full of important information relevant to the yachting industry. This latest issue is the third of the series, originally created in spring 2011, and includes the latest news from the RYA and MCA about training courses and qualifications plus advice and services offered by Aigua Sea School. The new ‘Wave’ provides great advice and notices that people may not be aware of, for example the leading story is on the new Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course that is now mandatory for all commercial endorsements or revalidations. Plus, there are articles about converting between sail and motor at Yachtmaster level; the Yachtmaster Coastal certificate, and advice for those starting out in the nautical industry; Aigua’s Day Skipper COMBO package is included and the new Ocean course and Master 200 classes planned by Aigua Sea School from autumn 2012. The Aigua training team believe it’s really important to get news out there that directly affects the people working in the yachting industry. On this front, Aigua is seen to lead the way in Palma, for example Aigua was the first Palma based training centre to be registered for the PPR course and has printed an ‘advice note’ that is available free of charge to all Yachties and interested parties. The ‘Wave’ welcomes Dr Ken Prudhoe again who continues his articles about the ENG1 medical report, and this issue features an article about what a Yachtmaster examiner looks for in a candidate, how to fly the courtesy flag this season so as not to offend in foreign waters and includes notice about the free-ofcharge theory workshops Aigua continues to run on a monthly basis. The ‘Wave’ is regularly distributed around the marinas, is available online from the sea school website and from the school office in Santa Catalina. Dear Islander,

very happy to send you more info by e.mail. All of our contact details are immediately below this column.

May I dedicate my ramble this month to highlighting a couple of important announcements? Both are very relevant to yachting in Spain, but also of great importance to the European boating community in general, including the vast number of nautical tourists that come to Spanish waters from just about all over the world.

And now to an equally important and in some ways much more urgent announcement which relates to proposed anchoring restrictions in The Balearics. This you will find on page 11 of this issue, and I do urge you to read it if you are a yacht skipper, owner or senior crew.

Within these pages you should find a special 4 page executive summary insert, published by courtesy of AEGY (Spanish Superyacht Association.) This overviews the 150 page economic report which is being presented to the central government in Madrid and in the regions, at almost every relevant departmental level over the coming weeks.

The gist of it is, that the Posidonia Weed which covers the sea bed in many coastal areas is vital to the health of the oceans and marine life. It has to have some protection, and there has been a proposed decree, which seeks to keep yachts, anchored in deep water (no less than 35 metres) The notice on the right of page 11 states clearly the status of this proposal as confirmed to The Islander by the presidents of the main nautical associations.

As a committee member of a nautical association myself, I am often asked what exactly is going on with the fight against matriculation tax. And the answer is….always something, but its also a very long bureaucratic, sometimes very tiring journey along many rocky roads.

I don’t intend to insult our readers by elaborating on why this idea is completely bonkers, as I’m sure that anyone who has been anywhere near a boat will know very well!

So, the survey and report had to be done, you cannot turn around national tax policies without hard economic facts, and its also important that those facts are made known to everyone in the yachting world and the public at large. Please if you would like to know more, or if for some reason you find that the insert has been taken out by somebody else, we are THE ISLANDER NAUTICAL MEDIA S.L Villa J - Mar del Sur - Carrer Francisco de Goya Nova Santa Ponsa, 07180, Mallorca, Baleares, España Tel. 971 126 252 / 971 100 601 -  Mob. 697 887 237 Email: peter.franklin@atlas.com.es Deposito legal: PM 146-1997

Emma here, The islander’s newest correspondent from the Algarve! In last month’s issue, Peter introduced Bluewater Algarve who have teamed up with The Islander to distribute this wonderful magazine to yet another fabulous location! I have missed getting my little mitts on The Islander since leaving Mallorca! I will be keeping you all up to date with all that is going on here in Portugal including news, events, facilities & activities. For those of you who are not familiar with the Algarve, read on... We are blessed with an amazing climate all year round and fantastic winds for sailing, the predominant wind is offshore, so stunning flat seas! The unspoiled beaches are vast and never crowded! We have 4 world class marinas with berths up to 60 mtrs - Marina de Vilamoura is the closest to the airport at only 25km away, with a casino, bars and night clubs, a 5 star waterfront hotel, designer shops. - Westwards we have Marina de Albufeira. Modest, but modern. A fun place to hang out with cocktail bars and restaurants. - Marina de Portimão and the close-by shipyard is the place to come for your re-fit, maintenance or repairs. Boasting a 300 ton travel lift and all the facilities you are likely to need, be it for a simple antifouling or more complex technical assistance. The nightlife close to the marina offers everything from romantic, elegant waterside restaurants to the trendiest night clubs. - Marina de Lagos is lively and fun. The old town which oozes charm and history is a short walk away. There’s a big supermarket just outside the marina and a wellstocked chandlery. If guests or crew need to fly to or from the yacht, Faro airport, never more than an hour’s drive from anywhere in the Algarve, has flights to all major European destinations. 2012 events include: - The Volvo Ocean Race, arriving in Lisbon from Miami, on June 8th -10th, from there they will leave for Lorient, in France, as part of the 8th leg of the event. - Rally Portugal arrives in Marina de Lagos on 26th June. On the 27th is the prize giving and party - great fun! - The Tall Ships are in Lisbon from 19th - 22nd July, always an amazing sight! - Marina de Portimao hosts the Portugal Match Cup, part of the World Match Racing Tour from 24th - 29th July. - My favourite, the Bluewater Regatta in Marina de Lagos from 14th - 16th of September. PORT ADRIANO SUPERYACHT DAYS

NEW NAUTICAL TV PARTNERSHIP IN PALMA

The first Superyacht open days event ever held in The Balearics ended on 30th April after three busy days at the newly extended Port Adriano luxury marina in El Toro, just 20 minutes away from Palma de Mallorca.

MallorcaToday.TV, a new 24/7 internet television portal on the island of Mallorca, and The Islander, the longest running monthly nautical magazine in the Western Mediterranean, have announced a strategic partnership offering enhanced news coverage, and promotional benefits for their viewers and readers.

The event was organised by a group of leading Palma based yacht brokers, and succeeded in filling the marina over a fine sunny long weekend with 42 superyachts, the majority being over 30 metres.

As of May 1st The Islander started providing regular news bulletins covering yachting events, sailing weather and developments in the leisure marine world for NTVE. They will also become the portal´s sales and marketing arm for the lucrative and cost effective promotional opportunities made possible by the rapidly expanding online TV media sector.

Arne Ploch and Marc Haendl

These were split exactly 50/50 motor and sail, with two of them at the max 60 metre length that the marina can accommodate. Marc Haendl of Ocean Independence and Arne Ploch of Camper & Nicholsons International Palma were the senior brokers who first conceived the idea back in October last year. The pair were interviewed on the foredeck of the 42metre Jongert built sailing ketch ‘Passe Partout’ by Palma based yachting magazine The Islander for its NTVE nautical TV channel.

Mallorca Today. TV is the first Online English Television Channel dedicated to Mallorca, and it follows on from the successful launch of Nautical TV Europe (NTVE), which was inaugurated at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2010.

Peter Franklin, of The Islander said: “The most important headline for our viewers and readers is that all of the nautical printed and digital media we control is totally FREE and easily available ...without payment, passwords or subscriptions!” www domains: theislander.net * ntve.tv * sea-things.tv

Marc said; “This event has exceeded all of our expectations, and has been a tremendous way to bring people to this spectacular new port with its extensive facilities. Arne commented; “The unique thing about this display of superyachts is that it was a totally cooperative effort, with all the brokers working together on a non profit basis, assisted by great support from the Port Adriano management team. Marc added; “We believe that this concept has created a relaxed ambience around the port which has been conducive to a pleasant experience for the visitors and potential clients” “Many enquiries have been taken for both charter and sales, and the number of serious viewers has more than met our expectations.”

A day in the life of Mat Tax Spanish yachting’s No 1 enemy

When asked; “Will the Superyacht Days be repeated again in 2013?” Marc Haendl said with a wry smile; “We would certainly hope so, and although it would obviously depend on the port being made available, the marina’s director Tony Zaforteza has said that he would do his best to enable it to happen here again. Other brokers who each had several yachts for viewing were Frasers, Burgess, Oceanstyle, Northrop & Johnson and Dahm International. The new two storey commercial area at the heart of Port Adriano Marina, designed by French architect Philippe Starck, and directly overlooking the superyacht berths was buzzing with activity. Hundreds of local residents, tourists and yachting enthusiasts all mingled together enjoying the sunshine and the extensive range of newly opened food and beverage outlets at the port. You can see online TV coverage of the event at: www.ntve.tv

Its worth a try to pretend we´re chartering a giant floating toy Alice, but I´m not sure if the tax authorities will be fooled…

ANCHORING IN THE BALEARICS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT There has been much talk in the local press (and even more around the quays) speculating on the possiblity of new anchoring restrictions being enforced to protect the Posidonia Weed Prairies on the sea bed around the coast of the islands. This has suggested that yachts over 12 m would have to anchor in no less than 35 metres of water.

PLEASE TAKE CAREFUL NOTE

Every one of the local Nautical Associations which are united under the Balearic Nautical Business Federation (FENIB) have opposed this recommended decree, which has NOT passed into law. They are having urgent meetings with the government right now and expect to announce that the proposals will not be implemented. will keep you informed.

FAIRLINE CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT And just to complete the line up of wacky names (who cares about the golf anyway) the “Bimbo and Friends” team of Sarah and Alan Brown, Peter Smith and Bernard Murray came in with a respectable third place. Prizes for the longest drive (mens and ladies) went to Nick Llewellyn and Sarah Brown respectively, whilst Ady Dutton got his ball closest to the pin from the tee on the appointed par 3 hole. Saul Jones of Orca Media, won the booby prize of a ball retriever, specially designed for fishing balls out of the water. No prizes for guessing what special skills he had displayed during the tournament, to earn such a wonderfully useful gadget in the eyes of the ‘judges.’

Smiling winners with the pink shirted golf pro. On May 5, Fairline South Mallorca held their annual charity golf tournament at the Real Golf de Bendinat golf course just outside of Palma de Mallorca. This was followed by a late lunch and prize giving in the excellent clubhouse restaurant. Seippel & Light Marine Insurance Broker SL, one of this year’s main sponsors of the tournament were actually the winning team! In addition to taking home the first place trophy, they also offered a fantastic prize for a Hole-in-One – a Kia Rio hatchback. (Sadly nobody won it, despite some valiant efforts) . This year’s S & L team members who were collectively entered under the dubious team name of “Risky Business” included Tim Light (Seippel & Light), Mark Millward (Blue Attraction), Nick Llewellyn (Jay Max) and Nigel Durand (Tatasu). The guys were cheered on and morally supported by Managing Director Heidrun Bierkamper and Debbie Preece who looks after the companies marketing and publicity. In second place with an equally suspect title was the “Defending Heaven” team consisting of Ady Dutton, Wendy and Tony Chetland and Remy Millot of Pinmar. Peter Ledwidge explains the “special gadget” to Saul Jones.

The Islander donated prizes of two WOWee portable speakers for the best-dressed male and female golfers, which went to Tim Light and Wendy Chetland for their sartorial elegance on the course. The whole event was presided over by local golf professional Peter Ledwidge, who brought his usual enthusiasm and keen judgment to the event keeping any “handicap bandits” under full control! All in all, a great day´s fun and sport for everyone concerned and a very nice donation of around 4500 euros (and still counting) to this year´s chosen charity which was The Association of Parents of Children with Cancer Baleares (ASPANOB) This was established in 1987, around a group of parents who joined with the intention of working to improve the quality of life for all children aged 0 to 18 and their families. These were all patients in the Balearics suffering with cancer. Since then, ASPANOB has grown, working every day with the satisfaction of seeing its activities increased year after year, and its most important programs being expanded. Any donations to the ASPANOB fund are still welcome, no matter how much or little it is… Please contact Jackie Lancaster at Fairline: jackie@fairlinesouthmallorca.com Tel: +34 971 676 604

Happy faces at the lunch table.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Extend your communications and support capabilities with these interesting new products. We have been introduced to several innovative high tech items this month. Out of these, I have selected a couple which are about to be launched into the market, both of which can provide tremendous benefits to yachts and to the land-based service industry that keeps them all afloat. True Connect – GSM, 3G and UMTS signal booster We are currently testing a unique GSM and 3G signal booster called True Connect. It really is unique, as it performs like no others we have used before. True Connect enables you to extend your GSM and 3G signal up to 40km offshore and into quiet and secluded anchorages where previously there would have been no signal. We asked the designers why it is unique and they told us it is because their product outperforms any other products. This unit has no less than 6 specific noise filters (in and out for each modem) and an individual gain control for every frequency. Also, the unit has been tested and optimised for life at sea. In fact, it is specifically designed and is fully compliant for use at sea, and cannot be used ashore. The designers are working on a similar booster that will be approved for use ashore. Covering all 3 European frequencies (a US model is also available) it picks up the faintest signal from a GSM tower up to 40km off shore, amplifies and filters out the noise, and retransmits the signal aboard the vessel. Guests and crew can therefore use their mobile phone and 3G device as if on land. We have been aware of the product since its conception. The designers have tested it on various vessels at sea during the development phase, and were very pleased to receive positive feedback from those vessels that they were regularly getting excellent reception 40km offshore with a 10m high antenna. The higher the antenna is mounted, the better the range will be. This should prove particularly useful in the Med where GSM, 3G and UMTS coverage is extensive, and yachts mostly cruise around the coastlines. It will enable extended use by every one of their own cell phones. Captains should no longer get the request to “anchor in the next bay” to get a signal. This is a great solution for any size or type of yacht that cruises in areas with GSM, 3G and UMTS coverage. The unit is easy to install and consists of a complete kit of all the required equipment: external antenna, main booster unit, internal antenna, power injector and all necessary cabling and mounting brackets. Accessories are also available to distribute the signal around the yacht to engineering spaces such as the engine room where engineers were previously unable to use their cell phones. A 4G version of the True Connect is in development. Imagine having a serious problem on board such as the internet connection fails or, even worse, a guest has a heart attack... Then imagine how much easier it would be for someone to help you if they could see what you are doing by looking through your eyes and be able to talk to you and the patient at the same time? A few weeks ago we conducted an evaluation presentation of a

new product designed and manufactured by Modern Security Solutions to user requirements validated for medical use by Dr David Irons of Ocean Medical International, and by ourselves for Remote Technical use. It is a communication device for anyone needing to communicate with another from a remote location, live, and for any reason. We have called it eYES & EARS powered by AFIANT. Put simply, it place shifts the EYES and EARS of the wearer to anyone else, anywhere in the world via a web browser. The unique feature of this new product is that it not only communicates using voice but also uses live vision. The product consists of a headset with a camera with a small backpack. Your imagination can run riot as to what it can be used for. Between us and our evaluation guests, we came up with a plethora of ideas: • Medical support, help and intervention. • Remote service to equipment on board. • To enable immediate warranty service post refit or launch wherever the yacht is after it has left the yard. • Showing & discussing with an owner the progress of a refit. • A brief initial view & discussion of a boat for sale. • Sending live video and commentary from a yacht race. • How to insert a card in a decoder! • Selection of different fabric options. Basically, it enables more complex procedures to be handled remotely and in turn will increase the comfort factor for an owner to use their yacht in more remote locations. Due to the vision it enables faster help and diagnosis – in an emergency it could be a potential life saver. You may think this could be done using a smart phone or one of the many cameras you can buy on the internet for mounting on your helmet whilst cycling. Between us we have tried them all and none work successfully. The design goal was to provide a flexible, portable, hands free, rugged, waterproof and rapidly deployable solution for global remote audio and video transmission. It has been designed and built to a number of military specifications and is thus extremely reliable and easy to use. One of the most impressive features is the video compression. This is what make this device unique and allows it to be used with all the yacht’s communication connections including, VSAT, Inmarsat Fleet Broadband, 3G and wi-fi at a very reasonable cost. It connects via a wi-fi access point or alternatively via 3G with its own on-board 3G SIM card. As can be seen in the photos eYES & EARS powered by AFIANT primarily consists of a custom waterproof headset with a mike, bullet camera and a small waterproof backpack. There are various additional options such as a range of cameras including night vision. Our evaluation presentation was a success. We had invited a cross section of professionals from the industry including captains, project managers, both independent and attached to yards, yacht builder representatives, yacht managers and brokers. The overall feedback we got was very clear, “every yacht should have one, particularly if their cruising itinerary takes

15

them offshore”. Another comment from the project managers was “it would save us a lot of money by clearly identifying if warranty call-outs were necessary”. In my opinion, this month’s two new products complement each other superbly. Cobham, owners of Sea Tel, acquires Thrane & Thrane The big corporate news this month has been the acquisition by Cobham of Thrane & Thrane. On 3rd May, British defence equipment manufacturer Cobham, owners of Sea Tel inc, finally secured a recommended £275 million takeover of Danish satellite telecommunications group Thrane & Thrane. It’s going to be interesting to watch and see how Sea Tel and Thrane & Thrane, whose main brand in our business is Sailor, work together. A few months ago, Sea Tel launched their own Fleet Broadband terminal in direct competition with the industry standard Sailor Fleet Broadband terminals and Thrane & Thrane launched their own VSAT antenna. Cobham has been stalking Thrane for the best part of a year and launched a £270 million bid in March, which it withdrew, and then re-launched last month at the same price after Thrane’s chief executive resigned. Over recent months Cobham has built up a 25.6% stake in the business. They won the agreement of the founder and 22.7%-shareholder Lars Thrane by tweaking up their offer by 15 Kroner (£1.64) to 435 Kroner per share. And finally littleBits If you, or your kids, are interested in learning more about electronics and how things work take a look at the web site for littleBits, www.littlebits.cc. It is an open source library of electronic modules that snap together with tiny magnets for prototyping and play. As the web site states, “we spend more than 7.5 hours with technological devices every day, but most us don’t know how they work, or how to make our own. DOCTOR AT SEA: THINNING THE BLOOD IN A GOOD CAUSE At the end of March the long-awaited MCA revised guidelines on asthma and on anticoagulation were released to MCA doctors. Everyone is familiar with asthma and methods of treatment as well as the potential problems both on land and sea. Anticoagulation however is a dark horse and is affecting an increasing number of people with a range of medical conditions that require them to take anti-blood clotting agents, such as oral warfarin or possibly even injections of agents such as heparin.

patients with DVT or pulmonary embolism are found to have this condition. A few people are at even greater risk of blood clotting because they have inherited the tendency from both parents – people such as Dawne Archer who has written about her condition on another page. She is determined to have as normal a life as possible, including trekking 100Km through the Sahara in November to raise funds for Lifeblood: the Thrombosis Charity – have a look at this good cause!

Long-haul travel, combined with inactivity and some dehydration induced by alcohol, increases the risk of blood clotting in venous circulation such as leg veins (deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and fragments of this can dislodge and make their way through the heart and into the lungs (pulmonary embolism) – this is when we tend to hear of traveller’s DVT because the effect on the lung can be so catastrophic and affects otherwise fit, and sometimes young, individuals. The first one I ever saw was in a young man who travelled for several days in the back of a small van from UK to Poland with his legs doubled up for long periods of time – the problems of long-haul travel and travel in confined spaces are now much better appreciated. The most recent one was just last November when a group of us went on a long-haul trip and one of our friends developed a DVT on the outward flight – so it remains a live issue even with modern precautions such as compression stockings and in-flight leg exercises and walking around the cabin as well as keeping well-hydrated. Anticoagulant medication is used for months afterwards in order to encourage the clot to dissolve.

Anticoagulant medication may well be needed for up to six months, if not for life as in Dawne’s case, and it introduces health and safety issues for work at sea. The recently revised MCA guidelines are trying to tread a sensible path to avoid the obvious hazard of uncontrolled bleeding, either externally from trauma or internally from burst blood vessels in the stomach or intestines, or into brain or into a joint. Regular onshore monitoring is also needed and the dose of medication adjusted accordingly to get the optimum level of anticoagulation. This all imposes inevitable restrictions on the seafarer so that “an unrestricted ENG1 should never be issued”. There is a bleeding risk score that allows some seafarers to be “fit for work with low liability of injury in UK near coastal waters” and, in the case of warfarin, “once stabilised on treatment and with regular monitoring” - in this context, UK near coastal waters are those within helicopter range and the reference to injury is particularly concerned with cargo-handling or work at heights because adverse outcomes are more frequent with head injury on anticoagulants although it is recognised that no duties onboard are entirely free from injury risks.

Anticoagulant medication is taken much longer-term in other circumstances to prevent arterial clots as, for example, when the heart rate is not regular or an artificial heart valve is inserted – the irregular flow rate increases the risk of clot formation or the artificial valve attracts clot formation. These heart-centred conditions increase the risk of stroke as well as pulmonary embolism and justify anticoagulation. Short-term anticoagulation medication is given to some patients undergoing surgery to reduce complications from prolonged inactivity in the operating theatre. There are many good causes for the use of anticoagulants! Many people who get a DVT have normal blood clotting status but some people are at a higher than average risk because their blood clots more easily due to an inherited condition. The commonest inherited clotting condition is Factor V Leiden, first identified in 1994 in the Dutch town of Leiden and now known to affect 5% North American Caucasians – up to 30% www.clubdemarmedical.com

As a footnote, most people are aware that aspirin, often bought over-thecounter, is used by many people on a daily basis to “thin the blood” but this is to prevent clots in the arterial circulation that lead on to either heart attack or stroke and is not used to prevent DVT. This could be the germ of another article but sufficient to say that ENG1 certification is much less cautious with aspirin and similar agents and is governed more by the risk of heart attack or stroke rather than by the small additional risk of bleeding caused by this type of medication. The more difficult debate is on the balancing act between preventing clots leading to pulmonary embolism set against the increased risk of dangerous bleeding from the anticoagulant medication given for a good cause but not necessarily compatible with unrestricted seafaring.

E3 SYSTEMS - 2 SENIOR APPOINTMENTS

Our Oceans Our Future ... So last time we left off talking about Yolanda the Yogi’s thoughts on how cow emissions were damaging the environment. I believe I also mentioned how this leftwing vegan was always clutching a bottle of water… which leads me nicely onto my thoughts about plastic bottles and how bad they are for our environment. Buckle up you’re in for an interesting ride. Firstly let’s talk about your wallet. Bottled water costs up to 2000 times more than tap water. Why’s that? Probably all to do with the amount of energy involved in manufacturing the containers; not just the production of the plastic, but also the transportation, the packaging of the bottles and the disposal. I couldn’t find up to date figures but in 2004 it was published online that 26 BILLION litres of bottled water had been produced. That’s 28 BILLION plastic bottles. Although lots of people intend to recycle these bottles, according to the IBWA (2010), 69% of these end up in the regular rubbish. So let’s look at manufacturing. 26 billion litres requires about 17 million barrels of oil to make the bottles. How much is that? Well look at it this way, that amount of oil could run 100,000 cars for an entire year. This manufacturing process pumps 2.5million tons of CO2 into our atmosphere (more than any cows or vegans – if you didn’t read my article last week that won’t make a lot of sense so you better get an old copy of the Islander pronto so you can keep up haha). Another interesting fact is that most bottled water drinkers think it’s safer than tap water. However… when plastic bottles are subjected to heat, they leach toxic chemicals into the water such as Bisphenol A which has been linked to causing cancerous cells in the body. “Ah,” I hear you say, “but I keep it in the fridge… “, uh huh? Do you? And do you think it’s been refrigerated all the way to your fridge? Hmm. In the average warehouse temperature range from -3C (good) to 30C (not so good…). Transport trucks range from the low Celsius up to 50C on a hot day here in the Med. And that’s a conservative figure. Then it reaches you and your fridge. Or you leave it in your car and subject it to ridiculous temps in there too. Back to your wallets again; figures going back to 2004 reckon 100 billion USD was spent on purchasing bottled water… for a fraction of that amount everyone could have safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Makes you think eh? Anyway must dash, I’m off to get a water filter jug for our fridges at work and at home… Erica Lay - Yco Crew Palma +34 669 844 909 - www.ycocrew.com C/ San Magin 12A, Palma

HELP THE NEEDY… IT’S SO EASY TO DO We’ve had a cry for help from Mediterrana ONG, a fantastic local charity founded and run by Dr Michael Stoma in Portals, and supported by many in the yachting community. Mediterranea is well known for its Third World projects in Ethiopia and Ghana, but what is less well known is that it also runs several schemes here in Mallorca, supplying food to needy families with young children in Sa Pobla who are affected by the current economic crisis, and handing out basic hygiene products every month to the homeless in Palma. If you’re preparing for the new season and have food supplies and soft drinks which are near to expiry date, or any toiletries which are no longer required, please contact Mediterranea. These items can be taken to where they are most needed and appreciated as quick as a flash. All items can be dropped off at Dr Stoma’s surgery in Portals, or handed in to Planet Space in Son Bugadelles, Extra Space in Can Valero or to e3 Systems in the RS Global Building in STP. Use it or Lose it!

When I moved to Mallorca eight years ago, I was thrilled to see that I would still have the opportunity to see new film releases at the cinema in the original English version. One of the best cinemas for this has been the Renoir in Palma. They would normally have at least one film, sometimes up to four, and many of them the latest releases. The last film I saw there was “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” with an amazingly talented cast including Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. I loved it! It made me want to book myself on the next plane to India and gave me a little more hope that I could still look forward to some adventures, whatever my age. So, when the news came a few weeks ago that the Renoir had decided to close in Palma due to years of financial losses, I was very sad. It is a classic case of “use it or lose it” and although many of us went, and many more always intended to, it just wasn’t enough. The closure came as a big wakeup call with many disappointed by the loss and a “Save the Renoir Cinema Palma” (Salvem Els Renoir) campaign was initiated. At the time of writing over 1,500 inscriptions have been received with more coming in each day and steps to create a nonprofit Association are underway to purchase the cinema´s equipment and to rent the Renoir site in S´Escorxador. The plan is for the relationship with ALTA FILMS, the Renoir distribution company, to remain, with the option to include additional distribution companies. Investors are being sort at various levels including association members paying either a monthly fee for discounts at the box offices or a higher fee which includes a number of free tickets. MASTER BATES

22 Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that a free newspaper distributed everywhere around Spain has been featuring a half-page advertisement of a Russian young lady in various stages of undress offering her services to lonely men? I only mention it to you because I happened to be innocently flicking through this distinguished organs pages when I came upon it; unhappily this coincided with a female friend approaching me for a chat over my morning coffee. Hastily I tried to cover the offending page with an ash-tray……….but it was too late. The lady in question swivelled on her heels mumbled something about “disgusting, dirty old man,” and strode off up the road in high-dudgeon. To be honest I think she contemplated punching me but thought better of it; but I fear I might be labelled this way for life. Hey, I’m no prude but the ad is a little on the “urgent” side, so maybe next time the publishers could give due warning of what lies in its back pages. And anyway, what’s wrong with using those discreet lineage Ads that proclaim ….”Thai Massage? - Press Top Button and ask for Fook Yoo.” It’s all very confusing for a salty old sea-dog like me. Just trying to be helpful you understand! Now, if I told you the number of jokes I get sent every month, you would not believe it. My selection criteria has worked well for donkeys years, basically read them out in the office or the pub, and if they get substantially more that a polite titter, then they get short listed. The final acid test is to try them out on the Eds wife, cos being Dutch she´s a bit slow on the uptake. So if she´s still awake when I finish, then it goes in....simple! This one she actually laughed at : A husband and wife are sitting quietly in bed reading when the wife looks over at him and asks the question.... “What would you do if I died? Would you get married again?” Husband: “Definitely not!” Wife: “Why not? Don’t you like being married?” Husband: “Of course I do...” Wife: “Then why wouldn’t you remarry? “ Husband: “Okay, okay, I’d get married again.” Wife: “You would?” (with a hurt look) Husband: (makes audible groan) Wife: “Would you live in our house?” Husband: “Sure, it’s a great house.” Wife: “Would you sleep with her in our bed?” Husband: “Where else would we sleep?” Wife: “Would you let her drive my car?” Husband: “Probably, it is almost new.” Wife: “Would you replace my pictures with hers?” Husband: “That would seem like the proper thing to do.” Wife: “Would you take her golfing with you? Husband: “Yes, those are always good times.” Wife: “Would she use my clubs? Husband: “No, she’s left-handed.” Wife: -- silence -Husband: “s**t”! Over the many, many years that I have been writing for this fine journal, I have heard some crazy things said by politicians and various members of the government departments when it comes to yachting and its presence (or not) in the waters around Spain. But I have to say that the latest X rated horror story to be leaked beggars all belief! And coming right at the start of a summer season already severely threatened by gathering dark economic clouds, it must have originated

from a highly paid commercial espionage specialist working for either the French, Italians, Greeks Croatians.(Or maybe em all!) Yes, I am talking about the dreaded Posidonia Weed paranoia, that has gripped every tree hugger by the throat, and shook what little brains he has, till he can no longer see beyond the end of his pointy little beard. Of course this great nation of seafarers with some of the finest sailors in history is not going to allow this little bunch of islands to be a lone pariah in the maritime world, by denying all seaman their basic right of safe haven in a storm. Of course this centre right business minded administration is not about to preside over the sudden and violent death of nautical tourism during its watch! And the Ed is absolutely right, (for once!)... we are not going to insult our knowledgeable readers by spelling out to them the obvious lunacy of compulsory anchoring in no less than 35 metres of water. So its just not damn well going to happen....is it? But why ‘o’ why does it have to become a public relations disaster before its even been properly debated, never mind passed into law. That’s the question that can only be answered by the Posidonia Paranoia Brigade! Now gentle readers, I would like to share an experience with you all, to do with drinking and driving. Some of us who are, lets say keen drinkers, but not so keen on feeding taxi driver’s families, have sometimes had brushes with the authorities on our way home after imbibing. Well I for one have done something about it. The other night I was out for a dinner and drinks with some friends. Well, after having far too much vino, and knowing full well I was totally wasted, I did something I’ve never done before....I took a bus home. I arrived home safely and without incident, which was a real surprise, as I have never driven a bus before... This next story, I have to say, was passed onto me second hand, but my informant assures me that it was actually published in one of the Spanish papers recently. A man was arrested after arriving as a passenger on a plane and charged with ‘multiple sexual offenses.’ Now, without further explanation the mind is already boggling... is it not? It gets better tho, so read on. Apparently our naughty traveller was ‘three sheets to the wind’ having partaken of a bit too much booze. So, he decided to remove his shorts and display his wedding tackle for all to see. Wait.... it still gets better. Then he proceeds to march along the aisle looking in the overhead lockers for something or other.. And, Gods truth, it seems that the multiple sexually offended persons were actually all the passengers that he wacked around the head with his swinging member. What a show off, and after all that alcohol as well. Obviously not a man who suffers the dreaded brewers droop.

NORMA STITTS

Oversexed & Over here

24 For some obscure reason only known to himself old man Batesy here is of the opinion that he’s the life and soul of any party….snort. So why he goes round depressing everyone with information such as “do you realise that the longest day has gone” or “well at least that’s something” “what is?” I ask knowing full well I’m going to regret asking what the “something” is; apparently it’s that the earliest Mayan Calendar found in a house in Guatemala shows no hint that the world is going to end in 2012. Now the more observant of you will be saying ah ha but surely that’s Señor Bates being upbeat and positive….. absolutely right old beans until he follows it up with “there you go then more centuries of politicians c**p to look forward to” Fancy a dose of Botox? It seems that Botox injections could soon be used by the NHS to treat patients with chronic migraines. NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) has published its final draft guidance recommending Botox for sufferers when other drugs have failed. The draft guidance recommends Botox injections should be stopped if the patient’s headaches have not improved enough after two treatment cycles, or if “headache days” fall to fewer than 15 days a month over three consecutive months. Now so far I haven’t been able to identify where these injections are given or whether there would be any other sort of buy one get one free beneficial effect whilst it was doing its work on the migraine (incidentally I suffer myself so can sympathise) but with a cost figure to the NHS of around £350 for a twelve week course I have a sneaking suspicion that there’s a few who’ll be hoping to see the odd wrinkly crinkly disappear! Also in the good old U.K. British Gas owner Centrica has warned that household gas bills are likely to rise again this coming winter. The UK’s biggest energy supplier said wholesale gas prices are 15% higher for next winter than last and together with other costs this will add £50 to the average bill; hey and this despite the fact that even after last year’s mild Spring and Autumn British Gas still made £522m in profits. Vidal Sassoon still an iconic name in the hair dressing world. I was amazed at his 84 years when I read that he was no longer in this world of gel and hair straighteners; a real trend setter in his time and seen as the inventor of the “bob” he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most influential stylists in the business. His fans knew no bounds and when Martha Stross (wife of film producer Alfred Stross) woke up in Italy with the burning desire to have her hair done by Vidal Sassoon - in London her husband forked out £62; £55 for a return flight from Italy to London and £7.7s for the hairdo. That’s roughly the equivalent of £1,183 today.

GIBRALTAR DIAMOND JUBILEE FLOTILLA

PHOENICIA - GIBRALTAR’S OCEAN VILLAGE Last time 21 metre Phoenicia came to Ocean Village in Gibraltar she was in the final throes of an epic 20,000 mile circumnavigation of Africa. This month, almost two years later, the traditionally built 600BC Phoenician cargo ship replica stopped at the marina for some deserved R&R en-route from Sardinia to London and to collect “stranded” crew member – Len Helfrich.

There may be over a thousand miles between them, but Gibraltar isn’t going to miss out on London’s Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant and is instead bringing its own version to the Rock. Taking place on Monday 4 June, a day later than the London event, hosts Ocean Village marina are aiming for 100 participating vessels to make the event a patriotic and fitting celebration of the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. Ros Astengo, Event Organiser from Ocean Village, explains, “When we learnt that there was going to be a flotilla up the Thames on 3 June to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee we thought - why not do the same in Gibraltar? The idea was touted amongst boat owners here in Ocean Village marina and then, after a positive response, we took the proposal to the Government and the Governor’s office who offered unanimous support. Aside from enthusiasm on the Rock, we expect plenty of Brits and other nationalities along the Costa to come and join in the Jubilee pomp and circumstance.” Ros continues, “Apart from the spectacle at sea, with all manner of vessels dressed in streamers and Union Jacks, we’re also encouraging as much onshore support as possible with horntooting and flag-waving most welcome. The bars and restaurants within Ocean Village will be laying on special meals and cocktails and there’ll be a live band and DJ chillout music in the evening. For crew members taking part in the flotilla, the soon-to-be-opened Champagne Bar on Leisure Island will host celebration drinks. Then, as the sun dips beneath the horizon, the beacon on top of the Rock will be lit up – a magical end to a special day.” The Flotilla will depart from Ocean Village marina at midday on Monday and sail from the western side of the runway to the eastern and then make the return journey. It is free for all vessels to participate and there is no competitive element to the event, simply a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the Queen and enjoy some of the London spirit down here in the Gibraltar sunshine. If you don’t own a boat, or indeed fancy making a day of corporate hospitality for your colleagues, why not consider a yacht charter from one of Gibraltar’s many licensed operators. For a list of these providers, along with a full schedule of music events, food and drink offers and the timetable for the all-important skipper’s briefing - keep an eye on our FaceBook page www.facebook.com/JubileeFlotillaGibraltar To register your yacht for the event fill in the form here - www. oceanvillage.gi/flotilla or to reserve a berth for an overnight stay at Ocean Village call the Pier Office on +350 200 73300 or email pieroffice@oceanvillage.gi

Len, a 73-year-old hailing from KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, flew into Gibraltar on Tuesday 17 April expecting to disembark the aircraft and immediately board Phoenicia to crew the last leg back to the UK. However, high winds and equally high waves hampered Phoenicia’s traverse across the Mediterranean and she only made the Rock on Thursday 3 May – some 16 days behind schedule. Confined to Gibraltar by virtue of visa regulations, Len made himself quite at home. “It wasn’t until I was in Gibraltar that I realised quite how delayed Phoenicia was going to be and I don’t know what I would have done without the help of Ocean Village marina,” says Len, “I literally had nowhere to stay and limited euros as you don’t need much cash at sea. The marina team pointed me in the direction of affordable accommodation and after endless days exploring I became quite the Gibraltar expert. I climbed the Rock a few times, acted as impromptu tour guide for disorientated visitors and took plenty of group photos using their own cameras. I’ve also been impressed with Ocean Village, a very hi-tech marina with fabulous facilities.” When Phoenicia finally sailed in, Len was happy to draw his offthe-cuff fortnight’s holiday in Gibraltar to a close. “I couldn’t decide what was worse, waiting or sailing,” says Len, who previously crewed Phoenicia during her African circumnavigation and knew that it was no pleasure cruise he was about to embark on, “but at least onboard Phoenicia I will be making headway and doing something constructive. Phoenicia may not be comfortable, if the ship gets wet your bunk gets wet, there are no winches so 30 metres of anchor chain can take up to an hour and a half to haul up and the toilet facilities are at best described as ‘rustic’ but she sort of grows on you and I found it difficult to resist a second stint onboard.” Len’s first Phoenicia experience was unintentional. He happened to be ear wigging Captain Philip Beale giving a talk to schoolchildren outside Zululand Yacht Club and offered his services when a mechanical problem was mentioned. A couple of days later, the problem was resolved and Philip asked him if he’d do the 100 mile run down to Durban. An occasional sailor, he and his wife had owned a steel hulled 43 foot yacht, Len agreed. Durban became East London then Port Elizabeth and around the ‘Cape of Storms’ before eventually disembarking in Cape Town – Len became hooked on Phoenicia and will now help steer her back to London. Speaking this week of Phoenicia’s return to the Rock, Captain Philip Beale commented, “Phoenicia is delighted to be back in Gibraltar and hosted once again by Ocean Village. We first visited Ocean Village towards the end of Phoenicia’s historic circumnavigation of Africa in August 2010 and we received exemplary service and support from the team.

STCW-95 COMES TO GIBRALTAR’S OCEAN VILLAGE WITH ALLABROAD SAILING ACADEMY How popular do you think the STCW-95 will become in Gibraltar? With the next nearest providers of STCW-95 being the UK, Mallorca or Antibes in France, Gibraltar will become more attractive for superyachts overnight. They can take a berth in Ocean Village, train their crew and target Gibraltar as a crew swap-over location. Yachties can finish a season with one boat and then dockwalk to start a season with another. The Rock could easily become the next Monaco, the place to be if you want to succeed and shine in the maritime industry.

After seven years and significant financial investment, Gibraltar’s Allabroad Sailing Academy has recently earned MCA (UK Maritime Coastguard Agency) Approval for the STCW-95 (Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping) Basic Safety Training Courses. Allabroad Course Manager Clare Kuszyk explains how much it means to the family-run business. Why is the STCW-95 so important to Allabroad? This is the “big one” for us. We’ve had many Government departments supporting us and willing us on and the result is an official approval that will mean a great deal to both Ocean Village Marina, our base, and Gibraltar as a whole. The STCW-95 Training Centre will give superyacht crews and captains a clearcut reason to stop-off in Gibraltar and make it a destination for crew changes and training. Undoubtedly the Rock’s economy will feel the benefit. What exactly is STCW-95? Having witnessed repeated marine incidents and accidents, many of them occurring on private yachts, the International Maritime Organisation clamped down by implementing internationally recognised legislation in 1995. The STCW-95 sets minimum safety guidelines that all registered yachts and ships must follow. The course covers Elementary First Aid and CPR, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility. We can cover the entire course in five days or crew can take components one by one if preferred. Disasters such as the recent sinking of Yogi, a 60.2m superyacht that met her demise off the shores of Greece in February, are a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining training standards. Who needs to take this course? The official wording states “all seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity onboard on the business of the ship as part of the ships compliment with designated safety or pollution prevention duties shall, before being assigned any shipboard duties, take the four Basic Safety Training courses”. This includes all those who work onboard superyachts alongside smaller charter yachts - certainly those taking 12 passengers or more. Furthermore any commercial workboat over 200GT will need to complete STCW-95. The law states that STCW-95 must be renewed every five years.

What else can students expect from Allabroad? We handle the equivalent of an Airbus A319load of sailors at the Academy each month, all eager to tackle some form of training whether it’s an RYA on-the-water motoryacht, sailing or powerboat course or navigation, radio, radar and diesel engine theory courses. This may be with a view to a serious career in yachting or simply to competently and confidently sail their own vessel and host friends and families for days out at sea. Allabroad runs everything from courses of one day up to those lasting 18 weeks. Have you been around long? Allabroad Sailing Academy achieved RYA recognition in 2000, 12 years ago, and we’ve been setting standards rather than following them ever since. We continually reinvest into course approvals and facilities, are always expanding our range of training courses and are the only outlet in Gibraltar with our own air-conditioned classrooms in the heart of the Ocean Village Marina – this is why the Port of Gibraltar, Royal Gibraltar Police and Gibraltar Customs all regard Allabroad as their preferred provider for training. Why should people consider doing their training in Gibraltar? Aside from our proven track record and facilities, Gibraltar as a location is simply fantastic. We have 300 days of sunshine each year and tidal waters – something that the Mediterranean cannot boast but is essential for various commercial qualifications such as the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore and Ocean certificates. Gibraltar has an incredibly busy shipping lane and Bay throwing up challenging sailing opportunities and great winds. And where else in the world can students enjoy English breakfast in Gibraltar, sample some Moroccan cuisine across the Strait in Africa for lunch and then head back to a Spanish tapas bar for dinner? Finally this part of Europe has unbeatable wildlife with dolphins and whales often spotted at play, and accompanying our sails across the water, as well as being a major migration route for many bird species. If there was a check list for sailing locations, Gibraltar would tick them all. MARINE INSURANCE TIPS KEY TRAINING STRATEGIES FOR SAILING

COMPETITIVE QUOTES

Strong core and back to avoid injury, improve balance and create a strong base. Try planks, bird dogs, superman’s, mini cobra’s, Plank walks both lateral and forward and backwards.

Its is advisable to obtain competitive quotes from at least 3 reputable insurers. This area I covered in an earlier article however it is worth to offer you a bri9ef reminder.

Strong arms and upper body for pulling lines and handling sails. Try push-ups, tricep dips and bicep curls Strong shoulders. Practising shoulder stabilisation exercises using bands, shoulder rotations inwards and outwards. Strong legs - especially when you have to hike. Practice isometric squats and lunges. Focus on stretching the hip flexors. Lots of crouching – or not standing up straight and sitting leads to a shortening of the hip flexors, failing to stretch them will lead to lower back pain. Boost your immune system with proteins and the right multi vitamins and antioxidants, increase your energy levels and help the body to repair itself. Whey protein isolate powder - To ensure you are getting enough protein, enabling you to maintain muscle and also helps to enhance your immune system. Follow a sound nutritional program - with a well balanced diet, plenty of vegetables, lean proteins and some fruit you will have more energy and be stronger. With continual Strength training and conditioning program along with a sound nutritional program - a well balanced diet of plenty of fresh vegetables, lean proteins and some fruit - you will notice a real improvement in your sailing abilities and feel less fatigued - your recovery between races will also be faster. Weight Training strategies: 1. Always increase the resistance on the muscles through either resistance (weight), number of repetitions or the number of sets. You can also tweak your workout dynamics by altering any of the following: *Use lighter weights but slow down the time taken to perform the muscle contraction. *Count 5 seconds down and 5 seconds up. *Do not rest either in the down or up face. *Rest in the eccentric or lengthening of the muscle phase. *Use an explosive concentric phase (shortening of the muscle) and a slower eccentric phase (stretching of the muscle). Experiment yourself and see which is the most effective.

• Look at financial strength and also the ‘Specialised Marine Insurer’ as opposed to the ‘General Insurance’ company that has no dedicated marine team. • Endeavour to establish the claims service reputation. • Do not use Price as the sole barometer. If you compare pricing among the Marine Specialists the variances can be important but rarely outside the 10 / 15% mark • When you have been offered a 25/30% difference and beyond, beware! • When making the final decision weigh up these factors and then make quick note of the all-round efficiency levels in dealing with your enquiry: personnel friendliness; speed of response; thoroughness of dealings and presentation of materials. These help to make up your mind. • Finally if you are really concerned about covering your boat for all risk yet feel you wish to save as much as possible then you can also request that the excess be doubled ( i.e. the money you need to outlay initially against any claim ). This will bring down the premium price by a further 15% ( on average) POLICY DOCUMENTS • Policy Documents are normally issued via e-mail these days and originals will follow by post. • Check all the information submitted and agreed against the schedule. • Ensure you have the languages required depending on where you are travelling. • Check the dates are OK – start and end dates. • Make sure you are sent “KEY FACTS” and “POLICY WORDING” • According to European law you are entitled to receive this in your native language. • Most Companies will require the return of original documents should you cancel your policy and request a refund. Happy navigation and remember be wise, be honest be accurate you will sail in peace.

2. The four week change: Every four weeks you should change your program giving your body new exercises, by this time the adaptive responses to your program will have plateaued. 3. Specifity: Your program should reflect the movements and speeds required in your sport. Katie Handyside. Tel. +34 636 322 959 Info@katiehandyside.com - www.katiehandyside.com

2012 CREW SHOW PALMA

ROBOTIC FISH FIGHTS MARINE POLLUTION In the shallow waters of Gijon harbour, in northern Spain, a large, yellow fish cuts through the waves. But this swimmer stands apart from the marine life that usually inhabits this port: there’s no flesh and blood here, just carbon fibre and metal. This is robo-fish - scientists’ latest weapon in the war against pollution. This sea-faring machine works autonomously to hunt down contamination in the water, feeding this information back to the shore. Several are undergoing their first trials in Spanish waters to see if they make the grade as future marine police.

This years Crew Show Palma held on 27th April was the 5th Anniversary of the event and all agreed and it was the best yet, with the main sponsors Dovaston Crew saying that they were delighted with the record turnout. The show saw over 30 business exhibitors chatting amiably with crew and yacht industry visitors, plus there were demonstrations, competitions, the famous Hog Roast and Nicky Stixx performing a selection of dance and rock hits throughout the day. As always Crew Show provided a unique networking opportunity for crew and businesses alike, all in a relaxed party atmosphere at the fashionable Mood Beach Club in Portals. Business Lunch Prior to the event Dovaston Crew CEO Karen Dovaston and MD Phil Edwards hosted a Business Lunch where exhibitors and sponsors networked and built up some valuable contacts. Charity Pool Golf This years Pool Golf competition was sponsored by Orca Baleares in aid of Fundacio Respiralia, a local organisation which helps children with Cystic Fibrosis. Saul Jones and his Orca team provided some fun entertainment and raised 300 euros for the charity.

Karen Dovaston with Ulf Sydbeck from Riviera Yacht Services of Antibes.

The port at Gijon, in northern Spain, is being used as a testing environment. “The idea is that we want to have real-time monitoring of pollution, so that if someone is dumping chemicals or something is leaking, we can get to it straight away, find out what is causing the problem and put a stop to it,” explains Luke Speller, a senior scientist at the research division of BMT Group, a technology consultancy. The company is part of the Shoal consortium, a European Commission-funded group from academia and business that has developed these underwater robots. “At the moment, in harbours, they take samples about once a month,” says Mr Speller. “And in that time, a ship could come into the harbour, leak some chemicals somewhere, then it’s gone, all the way up the coastline. “The idea is that we will use robot fish, which are in the harbour all of the time, and constantly checking for pollution.” The fish, which measure about 1.5m-long, may be a little larger than their real-life counterparts, but their movements closely mimic the real thing. EX YACHTIE TREKKER GIRL FIGHTS AGAINST THROMBOSIS Dawne Archer is a 52 year old retired yachtie. Having spent time sailing on her own yacht and working on others as a Cook/Stewardess, she is now turning her attention to other matters. This ‘Trekker Girl’ had a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and a blood clot in her lung aged 26. Eleven years ago her father died of a blood clot, prompting Dawne to ask further questions, leading to a diagnosis of Factor V Leiden which is an hereditary clotting disorder. Dawne is determined to prove that it is possible to lead a full and active life, despite such a diagnosis. Having already had a clot, she is 10 times more likely than someone without Factor V to get another one. However, being unlucky enough to have inherited this from both parents (not unusual as, in the UK, it is present in 1 in 20 individuals of European origin) the risk of venous thrombosis is about 80 times (yes, eighty times!) greater than for those without the condition. Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity is a small organisation achieving great things, both with and for the general public and through programmes of education for health professionals. Often DVTs are symptomless (as in Dawne’s case) and diagnosis can take time which you don’t have if part of the clot breaks off and travels into the lungs. The emphasis is on Venous Thrombosis - Dawne is at no more risk of heart attack or stroke (arterial thrombosis) than anyone else. There are a number of venous clotting disorders, only one of which is Factor V Leiden. It is the risk factors that can be managed. For instance, when flying short haul Dawne will wear compression stockings, avoid alcohol and caffeine and will move around the cabin as often as practical, tips we should all follow. For flights over 4 hours she will self inject with Heparin, an anticoagulant. (“I am that person the flight crew love to hate! Always hanging around

IPAD DRY PACK

Sea-Things.eu

the galleys and toilet areas, flexing my legs and ankles and wanting drinks of water”). Crew are often required to jump on a plane to join a boat and our inquisitive natures seem to encourage us to fly for pleasure too. Island living means flying is an all too frequent event. Other danger times are when Dawne is immobile for any reason. Post operative immobility is a high risk time for venous thrombosis for all of us. Any of us can acquire a clot in hospital with DVTs accounting for 1 in 10 deaths in British hospitals; around 25,000 a year. That’s more than breast cancer, AIDS and road accidents combined! BUT that does not mean that Dawne has tempered her lifestyle in any significant way. In November she will be trekking over 100 kms through the Sahara Desert in the east of Morocco in order to raise funds for Lifeblood, paying all her own expenses so that every penny donated goes directly to the charity. “We will be trekking the dunes and camping in amongst them, dealing with extremes of temperature from high in the daytime to very cold at night.” About Lifeblood, Dawne says “they achieve so much with so little”. Only one paid administrative officer means that volunteers are essential and they come from every walk of life, from professional healthcare executives, doctors and researchers to the friends and family of those who have lost a loved one to thrombosis. “It saddens me that most people come to hear of Lifeblood after the death of someone important to them” says Dawne who has learned such a lot from their website. ROUND THE WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

BARCELONA BOAT SHOW SHAKES UP

When it comes to boating records, they don’t come any bigger than circumnavigating the world, and for British ocean adventurer Alan Priddy, his second attempt at the powerboat round the world record, scheduled for the end of 2012, has seen the birth of a remarkable boat. Named “Accomplish More”, the 90ft wavepiercing aluminium hull will be powered by twin diesel engines with waterjet drives, averaging 25 knots around the clock, with a top speed of 47 knots.

Organiser of the Barcelona International Boat Show has announced changes to this year’s edition of the show. Port Vell will be the only venue for both the on-water and on-land exhibitions. In addition, the event will be held from 26 to 30 September, instead of the previously announced dates of November.

When Priddy tried before 10 years ago, the record was just under 75 days, and while his attempt in the Rigid Inflatable powerboat “Spirit of Cardiff” was unsuccessful, he learned some valuable lessons which have been incorporated in the design of “Accomplish More”. Since 2002, the record has been trimmed down to just under 61 days by New Zealander Pete Bethune in his trimaran “Earthrace”. So now it’s not just a case of unfinished business, but national pride as well! As building has progressed, various scientists with their heads in the plans have all agreed on the boat’s speed capabilities. Providing all goes to plan, “Accomplish More” won’t just break the powerboat record, but the 45 day sailing record. And while it will be by a different route, it will still count as the fastest ever surface circumnavigation of the world! Amongst the crew joining Priddy on the attempt will be consultant psychiatrist and powerboat racer Jan Falkowski and travel journalist Clive Tully, both veterans of Priddy’s previous record-breaking trips, and British powerboat racing champion Shelley Jory-Leigh. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about “Accomplish More” is the way she is being built. Rather than choosing a traditional boat-builder, Priddy went for Micklewrights Structures Ltd in the West Midlands, whose stock in trade is making steel-framed buildings. “I particularly wanted their engineering skills and welding capability,” explains Priddy, “and the fact that they are openminded not just towards the design of the boat, but the way it would be built.” The early stages of the hull’s construction were completed last year with “Accomplish More” upside down for ease of welding the enormous aluminium plates. The boat was then attached to two vast circular steel frames on rollers, enabling her to be rotated to whatever angle is dictated by the particular stage of construction. The most striking thing about the boat is its incredibly long and narrow bow, and the upright sides giving her a modern-day “Dreadnought” appearance. One thing’s for sure. When the boat is finished and in the water in her Mediterranean base at Ocean Village Gibraltar – which should be during the summer – you won’t miss her. With her incredible mirror finish red livery specially formulated by DuPont, it’s guaranteed she’ll be a head-turner wherever she goes. Changes have been made to make it easier for buyers and enthusiasts to visit the event. The move, which also aims to help boost the sector, responds to the outcome of a report that concluded that, given the current complex climate in the Spanish nautical sector’s, the model that best combines the possibility of attracting more buyers with the need to adjust the cost of participation for exhibitors is to concentrate the show in Port Vell, and for five days instead of the usual nine. As a result, the Barcelona show will be in line with the format used by other European shows, such as Cannes and La Rochelle in France, Southampton in the UK, and Genoa in Italy. Since 1985, Port Vell has hosted the on-water show featuring larger boats, adding to the overall exhibition held at the nearby Gran Via exhibition centre. Show president Luis Conde says: “By concentrating all exhibits in the port, we can also show smaller boats on the water, a request made by many exhibitors and visitors, the main objective of which is to continue to boost the market and attract more enthusiasts.” According to a statement, the show will also offer visitors more opportunities to try out boats as now the minimum length of on-water boats will be 8m (26.2ft), instead of the traditional 12m (39.3ft). Boats less than 8m will be exhibited in an on-land area in Moll de la Fusta, alongside other products and services. Alejandro Landaluce, CEO of ANEN, says: “At these times of very difficult economic crisis, we have to opt for changes. Associate exhibitors have understood this and have chosen this model, which is the most attractive option, by unifying the entire range of exhibits in a single exhibition and on-water venue, something that, for some time, has been seen as a strategic need for the show. At ANEN, we are working to give our members the best options for developing their marketing strategies. We believe that this change responds to this objective.” The Barcelona International Boat Show is organised annually by Fira de Barcelona and backed by ANEN, with which it has had a collaboration agreement since 2007.
