OYSTER MARINE NEWS

SUMMER PARTY GOES DOWN WELL

UK based Oyster Marine has announced the appointment of Jamie Collins to the Oyster Brokerage team. Jamie will be based at Oyster’s recently opened Palma de Mallorca office, further strengthening Oyster’s presence in the Mediterranean.

Knox Design Home Store in Santa Ponsa, Mallorca recently held their “Start the Summer” party to showcase their new range of outdoor furniture from Point and to launch their brand new wallpaper and fabrics studio. The shop looked amazing and the 150 plus guests had a fantastic time and enjoyed a “Knoxtini” or two – a cocktail invented especially for the night.

David Tydeman, Oyster group CEO said; “Jamie brings a wealth of experience to the Oyster Group in selling quality, sailing yachts and will help us to develop our Palma operations and provide improved services to our customers. Jamie will take a lead role in implementing our strategy of offering brokerage services to Oyster clients through a three location network from our offices in the UK, USA and Palma de Mallorca, and will take responsibility for listing and selling all Oyster Brokerage yachts based in the Mediterranean. With a growing fleet of Oyster owners choosing to keep their yachts in the Balearics, we expect to recruit additional staff to join our Palma team in the very near future.” Jamie joins Oyster’s existing Palma team of Charter Broker Sophie Birritta and Service and Support Manager, Hamish Burgess-Simpson at Oyster’s office currently located in the STP Shipyard. Oyster’s Palma base is already proving popular with Oyster owners, where they enjoy a range of specially arranged benefits from discounted berthing and guardianage packages to full technical support. Once again in 2012 Oyster have chosen Palma de Mallorca as the venue for their Mediterranean owners regatta, which will be held on 27, 28 29 September at Real Club Nautico. The Islander will be running the photo boat facility again this year, and will have their NTVE film crew onboard to provide full edited video coverage of the regatta.

Collaborating with Knox to make it such a great night was “Delicioso” who were showcasing their new range of wine, “The Yacht Insider´s Guide”, “That Sweet Temptation” with their amazing chocolate display, Joanna Walton who brought her beautiful flowers and the star of the show was George Peña from Singtensity, an amazing singer who sang swing music and then dazzled with an Operatic performance that earned him a well deserved standing ovation. Helen Richards from Palma based yacht provisioners Delicioso, told us that their 2012 summer season wine list was again selected by Tim Atkin, Delicioso’s Master of Wine. Helen said: ¨Chateau Bauduc Deliciosos new house wine was chosen by Tim especially for us. Our objective was to find a lovely pale pink rose from France at a sensible price. We sell at only 10 euros per bottle, which is great value for money. ¨ Helen continued: ¨We’re in good company its also served by Gordon Ramsey as his house rose. We also have delicious crisp sav blanc and fruity cab sav/merlot blend from Chateau Bauduc too.¨ If you’re interested in the wine courses or wine tastings with Tim in October later this year please contact Delicioso: Tel:+34 626 566 731 info@delicioso.com www.delicioso.com

I know I have used the waypoint analogy before as a variation on the less nautical term milestone. But whichever terminology you prefer, meaning a significant step along a route, we have reached one again at The Islander!

nautical media group! Add to that 44,000 unique visitors per month to BYMNews.com and 9000 daily subscribers to the BYM daily newsletters, and one can see that the new X-Media Group has impeccable credentials indeed. This means that we can offer a whole new diverse platform for boating news coverage and reporting, also IPTV broadcasting of boat shows and regattas, plus bespoke promotional campaigns for all types of yachting and water sports products and services.

Since we turned 15 years of age earlier this year, there has been a procession of developments, which has now culminated in the merging of three companies to form a truly cross media international nautical news and information group.

NTVE.TV partnered up with The Islander team very successfully earlier this year, and the evidence of that can already be seen in the daily content on our TV channel. (Please see our new NTVE program guide on page 26)

By the time you read this we will be ensconced in our smart new office at: 69b Calle San Magin, Santa Catalina, Palma de Mallorca which will be the sales and marketing centre for The Islander, NTVE.TV and BYMNews.com, trading under the combined name of X-Media Marketing International.

With the exclusive global nautical news coverage that BYM is bringing to the group, we are confident that the concept of free, targeted and accurate nautical information which The Islander has become known for over many years, will continue to grow in the much a wider, totally innovative and technologically modern international arena.

BYM News started back in year 2000 as ‘Boats, Yachts, Marinas.’ In 2004 they changed their name to simply BYM. In that same year they revolutionised how yachting events were reported with the introduction of The BYM Photo Gallery. Their readership welcomed it, as now a sequence of pictures following any event such as a regatta or boat show could be seen from anywhere in the world. To date the gallery has 175,681 images, which have been viewed 14,376,292 times. A jewel in any crown, and a great asset to bring to the new THE ISLANDER NAUTICAL MEDIA S.L Villa J - Mar del Sur - Carrer Francisco de Goya Nova Santa Ponsa, 07180, Mallorca, Baleares, España Tel. 971 126 252 / 971 100 601 -  Mob. 697 887 237 Email: peter.franklin@atlas.com.es Deposito legal: PM 146-1997

ACCOMPLISH MORE & GO 2 After many months of delay, including the recent fire in an adjacent factory unit, work has finally resumed on Company85 Global Challenge‘s round the world powerboat Accomplish More. In the first two days back at the build site in Dudley, Alan Priddy and his team have finished all the welding on the hull, and removed the circular steel frames which allowed the boat to be rotated during the earlier stages of its construction. Now the 30,000 litre fuel tank topped off with what will become the floor of the wheelhouse, roof beams for the cabins will be fitted, plus the carriers for the inflatable tubes down each side of the boat. As things stand at the moment, the timing of the long-distance shakedown cruise may change somewhat, but Priddy’s team have told everyone that the main event – the circumnavigation attempt – will begin in Gibraltar around November 3rd. World adventurer Englishman Alan Priddy has chosen to use Cerion Energy’s DAME Award winning GO2 diesel fuel additive onboard Accomplish More for the Company85 Global Challenge round the World powerboat record attempt, previously held by Kiwi Pete Bethune and his power trimaran Earth Race, which was driven with bio fuels. But the 45 day sailing circumnavigation record is the one Priddy really has in his sights, and

he reckons that the GO2 additive will make the difference in efficiency that will make it all possible! The Challenge is simple…to design and build the fastest and most efficient wave-piercing powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, breaking not just the existing 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes powerboat record, but the 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes sailing record. So, the ultimate goal is the fastest ever surface circumnavigation of the world. Richard Franklin of GO2 Global Yachting said: ” Clearly we’re delighted that Alan has the confidence in GO2 to make it an integral part of his world record attempt. He is an engineer at heart and quickly understood the science behind GO2 and how it will benefit him during the challenge. We expect GO2 to make a huge difference, not only reducing total fuel consumption by up to 14%, but also by reducing soot by up to 40%, unburned hydrocarbons by up to 70% and by making significant reductions in other emissions, helping towards Alan’s goal of minimising the overall environmental impact of this World record attempt.” The Islander and NTVE.TV are media partners for the Accomplish More challenge and will be bringing you more news in print and online as the project progresses. For more information on the Challenge, please visit: www.company85globalchallenge.com For more information on GO2, please visit: www.go2globalyachting.com or www.ecosuperyacht.com

SAFETY AT SKI

Well, I say! The Islander has gone down very well here in the Algarve. Everybody is chuffed to be getting the yachting news from Mallorca and Gibraltar! Many superyachts pass us on their way in and out of the Med but don’t often pop in! There are, however plenty of reasons to add the Algarve to your itinerary. On my first visit to the Algarve in ‘98 I was blown away by the beautiful beaches, the warm and friendly people, the sailing! Sadly sufficient marine facilities, technical support and career opportunities were somewhat lacking! Marina de Portimão hadn’t even been built, let alone the shopping malls (!) but still, I loved the charm of the place. I sailed on to Mallorca in search of work and excitement but after years of cruising the Med I yearned to return to the Algarve. I had heard that the leisure marine facilities had greatly improved along with the shoreside infrastructure, so luckily I was able to convince my boss that it would be a good idea to base his yachts here!! Nothing could have prepared me for how rapidly the Algarve had sprung into the 21st century! A young woman like myself definitely appreciates decent shopping centres, catching a good movie (in English!), great food, night clubs, the odd night at the casino, and oh... did I mention shopping? The most important consideration from a professional point of view were the growing yacht service facilities. The introduction of a new 300 ton travel lift, award winning marinas, expert technicians and a long awaited motorway to join us to the rest of Europe made this the ideal place to put down some roots but still continue the career I love! Hurray! Anyway, some of what’s been happening lately... 65,900 people visited the Race Village during the first week of The Volvo Ocean Race’s visit to Lisbon in June. With concerts, shows, games, quizzes and parallel competitions bringing the Rio Tagus to life! In the office, one of our geeks (sorry I meant technicians!) had us all huddled around the computer watching ships, boats and yachts, not to mention more than a-few customers off on their merry voyages! Isn’t AIS is a wonderful thing. Check this out: www.marinetraffic.com Coming up in July... The Tall Ships are in Lisbon from 19th - 22nd. 60 vessels from 49 countries race to celebrate and maintain the traditions of the old sailing ships. Lisbon has hosted this event since 1956! emma@bluewateralgarve.com

Até a próxima! Emma

Based on requests from the Superyacht charter industry, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) established a basic Personal Watercraft (PW) course for guests using PWs during their charter holiday: it is called the Personal Watercraft Safety (PWS) course. Upon successfully completing the course, the ‘guest’ will be issued with a certificate valid only for the duration of their charter, and only whilst being supervised by the PW instructor from the yacht, or safe vantage point. In order to offer this training, the captain of the Superyacht will need to train as, or employ a member of crew as, an RYA PW Instructor, apply for RYA recognition as a training centre and undergo an inspection visit. To apply for the yacht to be a training centre there are Guidance Notes for “Standards for RYA Training Centres Providing Introduction to Personal Watercraft Safety on Superyachts” available from the RYA website. The yacht must have a PW instructor already employed on the yacht and, when the inspection is taking place, be prepared to demonstrate a training session. The Inspector will be looking for good standards of tuition, safety and supervision. If the inspector is happy then the report will be sent to RYA HQ where it is checked by the Chief Powerboat Instructor. If recognition granted, the Yacht will receive a confirmation email, a recognition certificate and reference number with which an order for certificates can be placed. A couple of things worthy of note: one, the course will only be taught on Superyachts recognised as training centres and two, the course is not available from land based RYA centres. Minimum duration of the safety course is one hour; the course syllabus includes propulsion and steering system, personal safety equipment, kill cord, safe speed and re-boarding in deep water. Having completed the basic introduction, the guest will be issued with a certificate (requires a photograph) and is now able to operate personal watercraft under the supervision of the PW instructor of the yacht. Working with The Professional Yachtsmen’s Association (PYA) and the Superyacht Industry, the course will hopefully bring about a significant improvement in the levels of skill and safety awareness of occasional PW users. TAX & LEGAL MATTERS

Anchoring restrictions in the Balearics In the press recently there has been information about the new measures that the Balearic Government will implement in order to protect the posidonia prairies (that is the extensions of Posidonea, the typical Mediterranean aquatic plant that covers most part of our coast). It is proven that the good health of this aquatic plant also determines whether our seawater is also kept in the best condition, and indeed it does have an extremely important role in the environmental balance of our seas. The new regulation establishes the regulation of anchoring in areas declared as of places of importance (“Lugar de Importancia Común” or LIC). The idea is to extend the positive experience of the existing mooring buoys in the Parque Nacional Marítimo Terrestre de Cabrera, Cala Blava in Palma Bay, Portocolom and Cala d’Or, etc. expanding up to 1.125 total buoys and clarifying the use and management of them and of the anchorages. The idea is to protect the sustainability and biological richness of the marine habitat of our coasts, and therefore there has been defined 9 LIC areas or places in which anchoring will be controlled, and in which the use of the mooring buoys will be compulsory. This new Law establishes the 3 main anchorage areas as: - Free anchorage areas - Mooring areas with buoys: red, for crafts under 8 m LOA; white, between 8 and 15 m LOA; yellow, 15 to 25m LOA and green for vessels between 25 and 35 m. - Restricted anchorage: in areas with posidonia prairies, anchorage shall be only permitted when the anchor lies on the sand

A day in the life of Mat Tax Spanish yachting’s No 1 enemy

It is very important to highlight that vessels over 12m (most of the charter fleet in the Balearics) shall not be allowed to anchor on posidonia fields unless there is more than 35m depth. On the other hand yachts under 12m LOA are allowed to anchor on the posidonia unless they are in a restricted LIC area. For more information or if you want to reserve a buoy you can do it online at: www.balearslifeposidonia.eu/ or under www.fondeos.caib.es. There are other aspects of the use in such areas, or the penalties that will be applied for non compliance once the Law is issued. We will keep you informed. So, goodbye to that picture of the large motor yacht entering the port with a big guilty green moustache under the bow! Wishing you fair winds and good sailing! CHI LOUNGE – NEW ON THE BEACH Palma Nova’s newest place to hang out, eat, drink, relax and meet friends is now in full summer mode and very much open for business. Stuart Bray and his team have put together quite a special venue, which features some unusual chic décor, and a very inviting chill out area with great views across the beach and bay.

The UK Government has heralded Boatshed’s clever use of technology and customer-focussed processes as a shining example to budding entrepreneurs. Boatshed was chosen out of hundreds of businesses by Business Link to be showcased as an example of a company that had used innovative ways to increase levels of business. It is hoped that Boatshed’s tale will inspire budding entrepreneurs and encourage growth. Neil Chapman, Managing Director of Boatshed, says: “We feel truly honoured to have been singled out as a successful business. Having grown the company from one office to over 50 in just 10 years we feel this is testament to our hard work and dedication to innovative thinking in business.” “Plus it is great that our customers and brokers across the world know they really are working with the best.” At the same time, Boatshed has entered the top 40 per cent of the best million websites on the planet This is all good news for the franchise owners of Boatshed Palma Lee Baynes and Steve Sheen, who have been running the set up in Mallorca since early this year. Lee said: ¨Its clear that Boatshed.com is a popular website. But now it’s been proven as it has been listed in the top 40 per cent of the best million websites on the planet, and that’s great for us as and our clients in Mallorca as they benefit from us being part of the Boatshed network, and having such a huge choice of boats to consider without leaving their armchair. ¨ In the table, compiled by Majestic Millions, Boatshed.com was listed as one of the most highly recommended websites on earth, coming in within the top half of all sites listed. The researchers behind the report looked at elements such as backlinks and SEO to compile the list. Contact details – Tel: +34 651 060 068 boats@boatshedpalma.com www.boatshedpalma.com

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Should Internet access be termed as “a basic human right?” This is an interesting question, and the reason I ask it is because in June 2011 the United Nations released a report that defines Internet access as a “basic human right”. UN Secretary General, Frank La Rue stated that the internet is “an indispensable tool for realising a range of human rights, combating inequality, and accelerating development and human progress.” The report emphasises the importance of the need for universal access and policies that won’t limit access for political reasons. It also recognises that not all nations are commercially able to deploy the infrastructure necessary to support universal broadband access, but it states that it should be their aim. However, would you put Internet access in the same category as water, for example, as a basic human right? Did you know that Switzerland, Finland, Taiwan, and Spain have made broadband access part of their universal service regulations by extending the existing mandates for voice access as a right of every citizen? Other countries are considering it. Other efforts in other countries are not mandated but are government funded, like those in the US, Japan, the UK, and elsewhere. Broadband access has not truly been mandated in too many places yet. The reasons are primarily political, and those discussions will continue but there is a real cost in NOT deploying broadband to everyone. A number of countries are developing broadband networks without a mandate either through direct government investment or government endorsed arrangements. These countries realise that having access to the internet will help them build their countries for the future as they cannot afford not to. The cost of not building a global network that is open and accessible will be reflected in education, health care, transportation, and most other industries as costs rise and the unconnected fall behind. There are a number of surveys indicating current broadband penetration by country and by population. They do vary quite a lot, but provide a good indication of the numbers. The last survey conducted by WebsiteOptimisation.com was in quarter three of 2011 and had Liechtenstein at the top of the list with 63.2% followed by Luxembourg at 53.6% and Malta and Monaco at 46.4%. Hardly surprising, you may say, as these are very small, wealthy countries so the investment and complexity of bringing broadband to

the population is not such a challenge. The first largish country after that is Denmark at 41.8%. In fact most of the Scandinavian countries feature in the top 11 countries. France is 12th at 37%, UK 17th at 34.3%, Germany 18th at 33.9% with the USA only in 22nd place at 30.4%! Sadly even though, to my surprise, Spain is one of the only countries that has a mandate to bring broadband to the people, it doesn’t feature in the top 25 and neither does Greece, Italy, Ireland or Portugal. In fact if you look at this report in reverse order and read it as “Debt to GDP” it could be the same report! Does this say something? What’s new from Apple? On June 11th Apple opened their 23rd World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco with a Keynote presentation from their CEO Tim Cook. The iPhone Siri did a great crowd warm up before he came on stage, which is worth seeing. Apple unveiled an all-new 15-inch MacBook Pro, featuring a stunning Retina display with over 5 million pixels, all-flash storage architecture, and quad-core processors in a radically thin and light design. Measuring a mere 0.71 inch high and weighing only 4.46 pounds, the completely redesigned MacBook Pro is the lightest MacBook Pro ever and nearly as thin as a MacBook Air. They announced an updated MacBook Air with the latest Intel Core processors, faster graphics, and flash storage that is up to twice as fast as the previous generation. The current generation 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro have also been updated with the latest Intel Core processors and powerful discrete graphics from NVIDIA. OS X Mountain Lion was also announced. This is the ninth major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system and will be available in July. Mountain Lion introduces more than 200 innovative features, including the new Messages app, Notification Center, system-wide sharing, Facebook integration, Dictation, Power Nap, AirPlay Mirroring, Game Center, and the enhanced security of Gatekeeper. With iCloud built into the foundation of OS X, Mountain Lion makes it easier to keep your content up to date across all your devices. I love the Power Nap feature and specifically the name – this feature performs any software updates automatically when the system is asleep. Yachts needing to manage your bandwidth beware! The new iOS 6 mobile operating system features include: an allnew Maps app with Apple-designed cartography, turn-by-turn navigation, and an amazing new Flyover view; new Siri features, including support for more languages, easy access to sports scores, restaurant recommendations, and movie listings; Facebook integration for Contacts and Calendar, with the ability to post directly from Notification Center, Siri, and Facebook-enabled

15 apps like Photos, Safari, and Maps; shared Photo Streams via iCloud; and Passbook. One of the features that particularly caught my attention was “Eyes Free Siri”. This is for use in the car. A number of major car manufacturers have agreed to put a Siri button in the middle of the steering wheel to enable you to talk to your iPhone and thus to not take your eyes off the road. Some of these manufacturers include Landrover, Jaguar, BMW, Honda and Mercedes. So, a whole plethora of new features from Apple. If you want to see the full detail take a look at the Key Note presentation on the Apple website. Give yourself some time as it is nearly 2 hours long! Intelsat to improve VSAT capacity with a new satellite network On 12th June, the day after the Apple announcements, Intelsat introduced its EpicNG satellite platform, a new series of satellites which will combine Intelsat’s spectral rights in the C-, Kuand Ka-bands. Not many companies have the opportunity to have “spectral rights”! The satellite network will be built upon an open architecture design and will utilise multiple frequency bands, wide beams, spot beams and frequency reuse technology. The new technology will also be integrated with Intelsat’s existing satellite fleet and global IntelsatONE terrestrial network, for backward compatibility. “The Intelsat EpicNG platform represents the next generation of satellites, a progressive evolution of the Intelsat fleet,” said Intelsat CEO Dave McGlade. “As the global demand for bandwidth surges and penetration of communications reaches ever further into developing regions and mobile applications, we are strategically investing in this platform to support our customers with a highly reliable and efficient broadband infrastructure as they launch new services and enter new geographies.” With the launch of its new satellites Intelsat is promising higher performance, and therefore a lower cost per-bit. This news will open up the way to a greater supply of satellite bandwidth and reduce the threat of any spectral monopolies developing.

has the advantage that delivery is by sucking (avoids injections, or loss from vomiting). Morphine and diamorphine (heroin) are at the top of the ladder but are controlled drugs in UK and this imposes additional administration to stay within the law. Tramadol is a decent alternative to morphine at the normal starting dose so it provides a less complicated onboard inventory. All the opiates are controlled in US so extra care needs to be taken. Opiates are sometimes withheld due to fear of common side effects such as nausea and vomiting and, after a few doses, significant constipation but there are additional medications which will avoid these problems and these are sensibly taken in advance of these side effects.

Pain is usually unwelcome – sometimes we endure it to achieve a job in hand like climbing to a fantastic view or to prepare for a race or simply to keep fit – but the crucial difference is that these examples are voluntary and we can decide whether to endure or not. This element of control and choice is what makes it so much easier to bear but the possibility of persistent pain imposed against our will is the crux of our fear of pain.

Paracetamol remains an everyday favourite, which is well tolerated. It is not an opiate and it sits below codeine on the ladder. There are paracetamol/opiate mixtures, which provide a continuum of potency but also mean that paracetamol may be buried in the small print of various medications – this can lead to accidental paracetamol overdose and then possible serious liver damage.

Unwelcome pain does have its uses as we all know if we touch a hot surface or a sharp object and the reflex recoil protects against more serious injury. Even the pain of trauma from injury or surgery can be a help in stopping us from over-use until the healing process is more established. What we all really fear is the pain of disease and especially if the disease is serious and maybe eventually unstoppable.

Opiates and paracetamol work by blocking the pain mechanism in the brain but do not influence the cause of the pain directly. For instance, a broken ankle or a twisted knee or a long-term joint pain from arthritis will all become inflamed due to the actual injury and this inflammatory response causes swelling, redness, heat, loss of function…and pain. Anti-inflammatory medications (eg diclofenac “Voltarol”, ibuprofen “Nurofen”) come into their own and, because they act directly on the injured part, they can be used in conjunction with opiates or paracetamol, which act centrally, and help each other to control pain.

Whatever the background, the control of pain is important to us all at different times. In May there was a national UK debate aroused by NICE, the UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence, which drew attention to the under-prescribing of strong painkillers to patients with serious pain. It seems there is still a reluctance to use strong painkillers such as morphine due to the mistaken perception that this will lead to addiction when the opposite is the case – “the pain eats up the medication” and provides a return to a normal quality of life knowing that the pain is controllable. Painkillers such as morphine are opiates - they come from the opium poppy or are synthetic derivatives - and they can be organised into a hierarchy of potency starting with codeine at the bottom then moving up through dihydrocodeine to tramadol and buprenorphine “Temgesic”. Tramadol is the strongest painkiller in some onboard medical kits and “Temgesic” is similar but Dr. Ken Prudhoe

Non-medication treatment of the actual source of pain is another chapter, which would be well worth thinking about. For acute problems, this will involve initial immobilisation, ice packs and rest then return to sensible movement (natural or professional physiotherapy). Chronic conditions like stiff painful joints benefit from sensible exercise, which is why morning stiffness is such a feature of arthritis but recedes with daily activity. This can be very much reinforced with regular swimming, which moves lots of joints but in a buoyant and therefore less stressful environment. If excessive weight is imposing everyday stress on load-bearing joints, then some dieting will also pay off as well. This type of regime can lead to fewer tablets being needed and a return to normality with our minds on more cheerful and productive matters. +34 639 949 125

FITTED SHEETS WARNING TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL FOR SAILORS- YOU ARE LOSING COORDINATION AND MOTOR NEURON SKILLS. I work predominately with people who work on boats and it is incredible to see how much you lose your functional capabilities. Aspects of loss of fitness that you would expect to see in the elderly, like for example the loss of muscle strength and range of motion, loss of balance, coordination and inability to perform certain exercises. Life on board a boat means you may only move within a very short space probably doing the same repetitive tasks over and over again. Putting clients though an exercise program that targets the whole body using compound movements (developing the body as a whole rather than isolation movements which focus on a specific muscle) is imperative to maintaining a level of over all fitness. I frequently use drills involving ladders and cones focusing on coordination – these drills you really struggle with – having to fir off previously unused motor neurons in your brain to activate specific body part simultaneously. Yes we all appreciate that if you do not use it you lose it but this makes me appreciate as a trainer how essential these workouts are. Regardless of what you are training for – health weight loss, sporting event or something you already do but want to become more proficient in – like sailing, windsurfing or biking – don’t neglect all aspects of a 360´ training program – or be prepared to start to lose you performance in not only sporting activities but also every day life on and off board the boat. For athletes and sailors alike the ability to be able to apply strength with an upright posture, balanced on one foot at times through mobile and strong joints, the ability to change direction quickly and use speed are survival skills and essential to prevent injury whilst working Try the BOX JUMP – excellent for maintaining stamina in the lower body, good for balance and an excellent calorie burner. Either place a box on deck or find an elevated flat surface make sure your heels are all the way on the edge if they hang off you could tear your achilies) hold your arms out to the sides or in front of you, or overhead, for balance. Jump on and off the bench with both feet. As quick as you can – do 8 intervals of 30 seconds. Also practice working out on one leg and in different planes of motion – we should instead be moving in different directions and angles, and using gravity to challenge us with resistance. By moving in these more unconventional ways, we’ll prevent injury, improving our balance and coordination, and build resiliency as we age. Consistently working and using the body in one plane of motion will lead to injury. Katie Handyside. Tel. +34 636 322 959 Info@katiehandyside.com - www.katiehandyside.com

It could be that if someone actually made a study it would be proven that the majority of nervous breakdowns were caused in some way by fitted sheets. Up until the arrival of the fitted sheet the only option was a flat sheet and carefully constructed hospital corners but these rarely stayed in place. It wasn’t unit 1959 that Bertha Berman patented the idea which was then improved on in 1990 by Gisele Jubinville who later sold the patent for $1million. Since then the principle hasn’t really changed, it’s a sheet with corners and elastic to hold it on. It sounds simple enough but how many of us have felt our stress levels rising whilst attempting to get the short side of the fitted sheet to fit over the long side of the bed? Add to this the irregular shaped beds on most yachts and you find yourself only moments away from flinging the fitted sheet over the side. So why is such a simple idea causing so many headaches? It’s all in the measurements - if the sheet isn’t made to fit correctly it is never going to fit. Fear not fitted sheet phobes – there are ways to smooth away those shattered nerves. First and foremost, fitted sheets can be made to fit the bed correctly. The supplier has to know which measurements to take to get the perfect fitted sheet. Secondly the elastic must be perfectly tensioned for each bed to give just the right amount of resistance to keep the sheet on without the need for super human strength to stretch it onto the bed. And finally, its possible to label each sheet with the name of the boat and the cabin/bed it goes on. Then you simply start by placing this label in the centre of the head of the bed, work around the sheet from this point and you’ll soon find yourself back at the top with a perfectly fitted, beautifully smooth fitted sheet. Finest Bed Linen offer this kind of custom fitting service and a wide range of standard and bespoke bedding. They have a range of 400 thread count Egyptian cottons in stock with fabric available to bespoke make any irregular sized items. www.FinestBedLinen.com T. +34 697 914 233

GALLEY GODDESS This column I want to dedicate to all those chefs, stewies, foodies and anyone that is into eating and yachting with whom I would like to share all the fabulous foods available as well as recipes and a bit of plain, old, OMG, isn´t this just a bloody brilliant place to live and work? What I want to celebrate is the arrival of Haloumi cheese - hooray! This alluring queso is traditionally from Cyprus and lends itself so well to frying, crisp on the outside and so oooozing on the inside. So, yay, you can buy it at El Campo and Cidon in Portals. Get yourself down to a market, summer vege has never looked so good. Try grilling tomatoes, aubergine, smearing a bit of pesto, stacking them all up and topping with a crunchy slab of haloumi? Haloumi and mushroom kebabs? Grate haloumi into pasta when piping hot then add chopped fresh tomatoes, parsley, chilli and garlic? Wow, take a look in the marinas, you can really see that the summer season is underway. If you are lucky enough to be in Mallorca, do yourself a favour and slip into Portals Vells, drop the hook and invite your guests to take a swim in the turquoise waters. Then call Restaurante Cap Cala Figera (971 180 492) order a freshly cooked paella that they will deliver straight to the boat. How fab is that? You simply cannot have paella without sangria, let me recommend a posher version in the form of Cava Sangria. Absolutely to die for. 4 cups diced fruit (strawberries, peaches, grapes) 2 limes, sliced Half cup each brandy, peach liquor and white grape juice - hic sprigs mint 2 x bottles chilled Cava ice Sling all together and chill out on the aft deck. Delish! Wine recommendation this month has to be Son Prim rosado - a local winery and well worth supporting. You will thank me for this :-) Lastly to all the South Africans - Dunns in Portals have homemade Boerwurst available. It is rumoured that the recipe was obtained from a certain SA gent who is very fussy about his sausage. He can chuck his boerewors on my braii any day. Enjoy, love your life! 22 There...I told you so didn’t I? All the hoo ha about the posidonia weed and anchoring in 35 metres of water was a leaked cock up, that too many local papers got their teeth into without even thinking about the lunacy of the proposal. Sadly as I mentioned last month, if a paid commercial assassin had been tasked to wreck our yachting season by scaring the pants off owners and captains, he couldn’t have timed it better! Anyway lets hope that some sensible reporting prevails and that the new decree, (which is well documented in this issue) is accepted by all for what it is.... A practical way of protecting a vital ecological asset. More importantly, let’s trust that the environment ministry sticks to its word and makes sure that the decree is policed fairly and not seen as a fast cash (and screw tomorrow) exercise by mindless officials acting like pirates in uniforms. If anybody gets foul of unreasonable treatment in this regard, please make sure we hear about it, so that it gets back to the politicians who made all the promises. Meanwhile if you’re cruising around Spain, the Balearics or anywhere else in the Med this summer, please have good look over the side before dropping the hook. You have been warned.... Any football fans amongst our readers? If you’re English you probably aren’t any longer! Why do we collectively kid ourselves so delusionally every time we enter a major competition. New manager, new attitude, new hope...same crap! “Are you daring to dream yet?” Said one perky BBC sports reporter, after we limped through the group stage, thanks to a disallowed goal being gifted to us by the visually challenged 4th official! The BBC man must have been referring to Rooney & Co, who were surely dreaming of an early exit from the Euros, so that they could drive their Ferraris to the airport and bugger off to their Caribbean hideaways with air head bimbos in tow! And then comes the pathetic bleating from Sr. Hodgson the new wonder coach, after Joe Hart picked the ball out of the back of the net, more times than the Italians were obliged to. ”Its a lot of pressure for the players,” he wails. “You cant simulate the conditions in practise,” he pleads woefully. Don’t talk bollox Roy... Four Spaghetti chompers managed it, while our brave boys in white huddled in a line with their knees knocking, and only two of them managed to propel a football over a distance of 12 yards with any conviction. I can’t wait for the same predictably tedious, self pitying outcome when Andy Murray’s wimbledon dreams are smashed by a foreign player who lets his racket do the talking. And getting back to the Euro footy, (at semi final stage as I write) why don’t we save all the travelling costs and hotels and just give the Spanish the cup? Here is a little promise... If they don’t win, I won’t drink any more......But there again, I probably won’t drink any less either! So, there’s this Aussie refuse collector in Sydney who is driving along a street picking up the wheelie bins and emptying them into his compactor. He goes to one house where the bin hasn’t been left out, and in the spirit of kindness, and after having a quick look about for the bin, he gets out of his truck goes to the front door and knocks. There’s no answer. Being a kindly and conscientious bloke, he knocks again - a bit harder and then harder still. Eventually a Chinese man comes to the door. “Harro!” says the Chinese man. “Gidday, mate! Where’s ya bin?” asks the collector. “I bin

on toiret,” explains the Chinese bloke, a bit perplexed. Realising the fellow had misunderstood him, the bin man smiles and tries again. “No! No! Mate, where’s your dust bin?” “I dust been to toiret, I toll you!’’ says the Chinese man, still perplexed. “Listen,” says the collector. “You’re misunderstanding me. Where’s you ‘wheelie’ bin?’” “OK, OK.” replies the Chinese man with a sheepish grin and whispers in the collector’s ear. “I wheelie bin having sex wiffa wife’s sista!” Getting back to our colleagues in the press, as mentioned earlier there was some abysmal reporting on the posidonia weed anchoring project, but this was in non nautical local papers, so some latitude can possibly be allowed for ignorance. But what about the monumental “mat tax’ gaff made by the supposedly reputable and respected IBI news, who are part of the almost monopolistic IPC publishing group. The ones who churn out Motorboat & Yachting, Superyacht Business and European Boatbuilder et al... This is what they published: ¨The President of the Balearic Islands, José Ramón Bauzá, has scrapped the boat registration tax for charter boats over 15m (49ft). The new legislation was announced this week during a conference held in Palma that focused on the future of superyachts.¨ Where on god’s earth they got this drivel from is anybody’s guess. But The Islander was there with NTVE, filming Sr Bauza’s presentation and we interviewed him in English afterwards. Check it out yourself on: www.ntve.tv gentle reader, and you will see that he said nothing of the sort. Although he did pledge his total support in working to get the mat tax scrapped, so we are all happy to hear that of course, and it should send positive signals to the international yachting community and potential charter yacht investors etc. I guess I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that... The Islander, NTVE.TV and our new partner BYMNews.com will always strive to bring you accurate information, and also to deliver it in any way that suits you! Oh well, that’s my salary paid for another month, cheers boss! Can you spot the mistake....

And, I dare you to own up if this is your boat...

24 Bingo wings…..yes you heard me correctly bingo wings (large flaps of skin that hang just underneath the triceps….); as if they aren’t bad enough it has now been officially confirmed by bingo wing experts that there are six types……oh great….. apparently all needing specialist fat busting exercise techniques. Now call me cynical but the specialist bit, is that a specialist which means lining the pockets of some super slim something that’s never seen a bingo wing in their life or is it a specialist fat burning exercise? Answers on a postcard please to the usual body sitting in the far corner snoring its head off! Someone rang me up the other day and asked was a cucumber a tomato?.......que? And had I ever seen strawberries masquerading as grapes not to mention the chicken that should have been “vacio” but arrived with a pork belly and herb stuffing sprinkled with as one of the little people said, yuk “green stuff” It transpires the pat on the pocket supermarket chain in the U.K. substituted several items in an online shop. To be fair the “allow substitutes” bit was ticked but come on, how on earth can you say tomatoes can substitute a cucumber. Not to mention strawberries and grapes and when calling customer services the person concerned asked if she was meant to believe that wherever the order was being made up that there was not one single perfectly ordinary chicken to be had….pass the shampoo, grapes and cream please. And whilst we’re on the subject of nosh certain foodstuff face bans…. What a mine of information eh…. from the 1st July Foie gras will be banned in California, next quite rightly (in my opinion) is shark fin, whilst consumption isn’t actually illegal, California recently passed a law banning the possession, sale or trade of shark fins and the EU, the U.S, Canada, Brazil and South Africa all have shark finning laws. Mon Dieu apparently Tomato Ketchup is a non non in French schools with children being allowed it once a week….but with French fries, the ban was apparently introduced to help preserve traditional French cuisine. And if you are at this moment chomping away on Casu Marzu (which means rotting cheese in Sardinian) you may wish to avoid knowing that it’s a white runny cheese made by injecting Pecorino Sardo cheese with cheese-eating larvae which then hatch into worms and half inch long worms at that. It seems cheese aficionados have evaded a ban by registering the cheese as a traditional food, which means it’s exempt from EU rulings. Picture the scene, a race track, a go kart……. and ME! Standing there in my pink check boiler suit, helmet under arm was one thing…..getting into it and sitting on the floor was another, getting out after lapping round for 25 mins stand on me was another story…… oh saved by the end of the page except to say there’s something memorable about being LAST; ever remembered anyone coming second last!!!

LORO PIANA SUPERYACHT REGATTA SARDINIA

Photo Credit: Carlo Borlenghi Two Palma based yachts duelled it out for 1st and 2nd place in the Cruising Class of the first superyacht sailing regatta of the Med season, the annual Loro Piana series which is held at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. This is one of the most beautiful and challenging coastal races in the world, with a course defined by the stunning rugged shoreline, dotted with rocks and islets. Around these features, the race committee lays out the challenge each day, sometimes with rounding marks represented by rocks that could destroy even these mammoth vessels if the skills of the helmsman and crew are not precise enough. This year, 16 of the worlds finest Superyachts were in competition, and as usual, the entered yachts were broken down into performance and cruising classes. Quite simply this differentiates yachts that are built purely for racing, from those whose owners choose to cruise in comfort, and have the yacht prepared and crewed for racing a few times a year. The fleet represented the state-of-the art in sailing yacht design and construction and ranged in size from the 24-metre sloop Ivanka to the 57.5-metre ketch Twizzle. Among the renowned sailors gathered in Porto Cervo for the event were America’s Cup Veterans Peter Holmberg aboard last year’s overall winner ‘Highland Fling’, Italian Tommaso Chieffi aboard Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s ‘My Song’ and Kiwi Cameron Appleton onboard ‘Salperton’, alongside the British double Olympic gold medalist Shirley Roberston. The two Palma based yachts placed in 1st and 2nd positions at the end of the regatta were The 39-metre ‘Ganesha’, designed by Dubois and built by Fitzroy Yachts, who took first place in the Cruising Division to claim overall victory in the Regatta. And in second place the 29-metre ‘Scorpione dei Mari’ designed by Tony Castro and built by Jongert. The 45-metre ‘Salperton’, another Dubois/Fitzroy creation, took third place. The top spot in the Performance Division went to the 25.3-metre Highland Fling, designed by Reichel-Pugh and built by Goetz, ahead of the 25-metre Aegir and Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s 25.4-metre My Song, designed by Reichel-Pugh and Nauta Yachts and built by Cookson. Both Ganesha and Scorpione have been represented in the Islander´s monthly Yacht & Captain feature, and their Captains, Alex Pamment (of Ganesha) and Clive Walker (Scorpione) are

Photo Credit: Carlo Borlenghi well known around Palma, with their race crews also made up of many experienced sailors from the island of Mallorca. Speaking exclusively with The Islander after the race, Scorpione dei Mari’s captain Clive Walker said: “We left the dock early around 9.00 on Saturday morning really thinking that there would be no last race, as the wind was ‘blowing dogs off chains’, sometimes gusting up to 50 knots. At that stage we had led the regatta since Wednesday evening, with a lay day on Thursday and a cancellation on Friday due to high winds. Clive continued: “Imagine the tension onboard while we waited until after 13.00 hrs when the winds abated to around 22 knots. The race committee then set a southerly course towards Olbia, and we knew we had it all to do against Ganesha, as our optimum conditions are 13 to 14 knots of wind, with our big genoa making the most of lighter airs.” At the end of the day we raced the boat as well as we possibly could, and in lighter airs we would have had to compete with the carbon constructed Southern Wind class yachts, instead of chasing Ganesha. “That’s superyacht racing,” said Walker “ every race of this regatta gave us winds of between 19 and 23 knots, so we are satisfied with holding our second place from last year. At the end of the day we all come here to race as much as possible, and to get three days racing instead of two increases the fun and excitement by 50%.... so we have a happy crew. POSIDONIA AND ANCHORING - THE FACTS

As mentioned in last month’s Islander a new decree governing the anchoring of yachts when over prairies of posidonia weed, is being enacted for this summer by the Spanish and Balearic Governments. These new laws are intended to give protection to the prairies of Posidonia Grass that populate the coastal regions of the Balearic islands. In esscence the decree which will pass into law within the next few weeks, will prohibit the anchoring of yachts over 12 metres in length when they are situated over designated prairies of Posidonia grass. This designation will be clearly marked on navigation charts and electronic plotters in future, and the minister was very clear that nothing at all changes with regard to anchoring anywhere around the Balearic Islands, in the areas where no protected posidonia weed exists, or is indicated. In other words anchoring in sand, of which there is plenty around the coasts, is still possible in any depth of water that the captain of the yacht chooses, according to his own judgement and seamanship. The Balearic minister for the environment said that this is the way it has been for the last 20 to 50 years, and will remain the same for the future. Even without charts it is possible in most places to see the actual grass or its shadow through the water, so there should be no excuses for anyone not following the law, and certainly no excuse for any responsible skipper to be navigating without up to date charts. But to make it even easier there will be a free app available soon for SmartPhones, iPads etc, which will actualy tell you if your boat is lying over a protected grass prairie or not. The other important point is that the mention of anchoring in 35 metres of water applies only to areas where there is known existing and marked posidonia grass. This is very simply because the weed cannot survive in depths greater than 35 metres due to lack of sunlight. So even if you are over Posdionia, you can move further offshore until you have a water depth of more than 35 metres, and still drop your anchor if you wish…. and if you have enough anchor chain! Special charts have been produced which will clearly indicate the prohibited anchoring areas in red, and the permitted areas in blue. The blue is very much in predominance thus verifying that anchoring in sand is still very much possible in the majority of the coastal regions around the Balearics.

Also 20,000 information booklets giving precise details about anchoring around the islands, showing clearly color coded prohibited areas, are being distributed to every yacht club and marina on the islands. This will be available in English, Catalan, Spanish, German and Italian, and can be downloaded from the website of the Government of the Balearic Islands, page http://fondeos.caib.es. The minister also announced that 358 mooring buoys in the 10 designated ecological zones will be free of charge again this summer, but there may be a fee levied for their use in future years. These are provided for yachts up to 25 metres, with certain limitations on wind speeds which should be clearly marked on the buoys. They are also colour coded and designated for yachts within a certain length range. Obviously with smaller vessels being moored closer to the shore, and in less water depth than the larger ones. The buoys are expected to serve up to 15,000 vessels in 2012, and will be maintained for use during the period from 1st June to 30th September. They will be bookable online as in previous years. There will also be 8 new surveillance launches deployed to patrol the protected areas - 3 in Mallorca, 2 in Menorca, 2 in Formentera and 1 in Ibiza. The areas currently designated as being protected with these eco buoys for mooring are: Punta de l’Avançada, Cala Blava, Sant Elm, Porto Petro and Porto Colom in Mallorca. Illa d’en Colom, Tamarells and Fornells in Menorca, and Espalmador Badia de s’Alga and Caló de s’Oli in Formentera. There will also be new buoys installed in the national marine park at Cabrera, and these can be booked on a daytime only basis at a yet to be announced charge, whilst the overnight mooring buoys can still be used with a permit from the environmental department, and are chargeable. In overview, the Decree made by the Directorate General for the Environment, provides for the strict protection of the seven-reef formations unique to the species of Posidonia Oceanica, these are situated across all the Balearic islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, and the decree will pass into Spanish national law in Madrid during June 2012. A 20 minute video documentary explaining more about Posidonia Grass and its importance to the marine eco systems of the Med has been made by NTVE.TV and The Islander. This includes some great underwater footage, and the production was sponsored by AENB, AEGY and the Palma Marina operator, Ammares Deportivas S.L.

Our Oceans Our Future ... Good afternoon armchair eco warriors. Have you all started changing the world yet? I’m still trying. It’s tough but I have now beaten several people into submission and am happy to hear of more yachts using the different colour bins on the docks (where supplied of course) and recycling. Plastics, cans, papers – not JUST empty beer and wine bottles going into the bottle bank now. I feel like we’re making a difference… even when they toodle off and spend several thousand euros filling up the yacht’s gas tanks and then chug off leaving an invisible toxic cloud of green house gases behind them…

So yesterday I saw some delightful news on the old TV; apparently now diesel fumes also give you cancer. The WHO have raised the status of diesel exhaust to carcinogen from “probable carcinogen” and now regard it as on a level with passive smoking.

Kurt Straif, director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer department who monitor and evaluate cancer risks stated various at-risk groups in a special report; one of which was ship passengers. I guess that includes yacht crew and guests then? New diesel engines emit much fewer fumes but still, fumes are fumes… ok, tell that to the yacht crew sat outside corner bar chain smoking on a Friday evening but is this another reason to push towards using biofuels? Tis a double edge sword really… obviously we have the health of the crew and guests to consider but biodiesel isn’t exactly free of it’s own issues. I was recently reading a report by the Cruising Association (yes, really, I’m that geeky) about the detrimental effects of bio diesel on yacht engines. Apparently the additives they mix in to compensate for the lack of sulphur found in regular diesel causes blocked filters and damaged seals to name a couple of issues….maybe I’ll save that for another time but my point is, how do we prolong crew life? If they breathe in the fumes, they’ll probably die. However, if they ruin the engine of someone’s kazillion euro megayacht they’re dead anyway right? +34 669 844 909

End of the road for the Euro? The Greek people have decided.... or more accurately they haven’t. The elections on June 17th were hurriedly arranged after elections six weeks previously had failed to make a clear decision. So they were sent back to the polling booths to try again. Their choice was a simple one, but in reality was no choice at all. Stick with the established parties, and the crippling austerity they agreed to implement, in return for combined cash injections of more than EUR 200bn, or go for the parties headed by Syriza, who said, to summarise, hang the bail out, scrap the austerity and see what happens. Narrowly the Greek electorate stuck with the former, rather than unleash the latter. In doing so, they have mirrored the decision making paralysis of the Eurozone’s spineless politicians. By all credible measures, the Eurozone has failed, students of economic theory would tell you that it never had a chance. We have reached a point where it is no longer feasible to delay decisions, to do ‘just enough’ to make the problem go away for this week, today, or a few hours, to ‘kick the can down the road’ to use the fashionable jargon of the moment. The choices are easy ones, with impossible consequences. You begin to dismantle the Euro in as structured a way as is possible, and grit your teeth and bear the storm of inflation, bankruptcy and recession, that would envelop the world economy. Or you bring Europe closer together. Monetary and fiscal union that would effectively tie the tax and spend policies of the Eurozone’s governments together in a single monolithic body buried deep in Brussels bureaucracy. The benefits of this scenario are that the reckless borrowing and spending of the so called PIIGS countries (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece & Spain) would happen under the noses of more frugal politicians, and presumably would be curtailed. Once you hand over financial power, you are more or less handing over political power at the same time. Effectively this choice is a long stride towards the ‘United States of Europe’ a nice little idea, but in my view and ridiculously improbable dream. A major part of the problems that dog the Spanish economy are the monumental debts run up by it’s semi autonomous regions. If Madrid can’t control Catalonia, the Basque country and the rest, assuming that Brussels will be able to, while also controlling the other 16 member countries is optimistic to the point of delusion. Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy said: “This is good news for Greece, very good news for the euro and also for Spain.” I’m not sure that many would share his enthusiasm.

NEW ITALIAN MARINA Further activity amongst the burgeoning set of new marinas in European waters is evidenced with the announcement of an operator for new Italian marina Marina del Gargano in Manfredonia in Puglia, southern Italy. The marina, which opens in 2013, has announced the appointment of MDL Marinas, the conglomerate responsible for significant developments such as the £25 million waterside hotel at Ocean Village, Southampton, as operator. The marina will offer 25 berths for superyachts making it the largest capacity marina for 30m+ yachts in this region. Marina del Gargano will cater for both the large and small end of the market with 747 berths for yachts ranging from 8-60 metres. It will have 24-hour security, a concierge service, a children’s play area, bicycle hire, solarium, and a number of restaurants. A swimming pool will also be opening later next year. The number of new berths or marinas opening in Europe with superyacht capacity is seeing somewhat of a growth spurt in the period 2012 to 2013. Eight such new or expanding superyacht marinas will have established themselves by 2013 including another Italian marina - Porto Arsenale Marina in Sardinia. The growth in fleet versus over-capacity in Mediterranean hotspots has encouraged new businesses to attempt to harness the demand. Courtesy of Superyacht News.com

THE PATÍN CATALÁN STORY With performance sailing becoming more focused on multi-hulls these days, and particularly since the advent of the latest A m e r i c a ’s Cup style carbon fibre racing machines, its interesting to see that a very old but exciting, unique and highly popular style of sailing catamaran still exists in numbers in Spain today.

Moreover, the Patin is a very safe sports catamaran: without boom, the risk of head injuries is much smaller, and, … a Patin is insubmersible!

The Patín Catalán as it is called took many years to develop at the beginning of the 20th century, swimmers at sea were accompanied by a small rowing raft built on two floats. This was gradually developed into a sailing proa, (multi-hull sailing boat) but the rudders and boom were never added, so that is how a very simple vessel with excellent sailing qualities was created. In the meantime, the Patin has grown into one of the largest unity classes over the whole region of Catalonia, and the gracefulness of sailing a Patin has been admired and enthused over greatly since the seventies.

So this little boat that competes in the Mediterranean’s oldest regattas is actually sailed without a rudder, daggerboard or boom. And precisely because of the absence of these components that seem so essential to conventional sailing, then the Patin Sailing Boat is considered unique in its field and is a model admired wherever she competes. In addition to the large fleet in Catalonia, there are active sailing groups in the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Andalusia, France, Belgium and Holland with the Patins being seen in places as diverse as California, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Germany, Italy and Australia.

Sailing without a rudder means that the boat is constantly in balance. For small path deviations, the trim of the sail is used. When bigger manoeuvres are needed, the sailor has to shift his body weight. The inclination of the mast can be adjusted fore and aft during sailing.

But the Sailing Patín Catalan is unquestionably a boat tied to the ancient city of Badalona these days a metropolitan area of Barcelona, and in 2008 was declared a cultural heritage of the city.

The Patin is maintenance-friendly, quick, light and easy to rig up. One man takes the boat from the trailer to the water line in only ten minutes! It resists the hard beach life, it is resistant to sand, salt and sun. It is the most appropriate vessel to conquer the breakers!

Half swordfish, half dolphin is how Patin sailing is often described referring to the feel it produces when you surf on one speed, producing seamless integration with the sea and dynamism. Therefore, the combined logo of a swordfish and a dolphin is what is seen on the sails of the Patins. It is the emblem that identifies them, and the word Patin means skate in English, thus describing a kind of skating motion on the water. In 1942 the first model appeared with a class approval and it was designed by the brothers Louis and Emili Monge, of Badalona Swimming Club. It was designed by the experience of swimmers, and not by any kind naval architecture. It was originally the means they used to get away from the beach and swim in clean, blue waters.

In 1951 The International Sports Association of Sailing Patin owners was formed (ADIPAV), and this institution still brings together and represents all owners of Patins around the world. It is one of of the oldest nautical institutions in Spain, and amongst its many duties, is responsible for promoting the Patin sailing and regulating the technical details of the boat, while fixing the classes and characteristics of the competitions.

YACHT & CAPTAIN FEATURE whilst flying over the island.” Winter wonderland: “We will be back in Palma mid-September, and will be hauling out in November for 3/4 months to continue with the refit programme and to hopefully pass without too much hassle our 5 year ABS Class Survey”. Q: Which companies have you used in Palma that have impressed you? A: Bobby at Varadero Palma, for all your needs whilst staying in STP. Ferdinautic are fantastic for all AC and Watermaker needs. Also I enjoy working with Delta Diesel for MAN servicing. M/Y NAKESSA - 2008 San Lorenzo SD 92 San Lorenzo Viarregio 112.8 GT 29m LOA MCA SCV / ABS Master & Commander: The Hon Thomas Chubb took the role of Master on MY Nakessa in October 2010 after being introduced to the owners whilst employed as the in-house captain for San Lorenzo Balearics (now known as Yacht Moments). Tom is the full-time Master and recently managed the yacht through a winter refit bringing her mechanical spaces up to scratch in preparation for a busy season. Service History: Tom started in yachting about 6 years ago having spent his youth as a Dinghy and Racing Instructor based in Solent and inland waterways in Hampshire UK. Then, after spending roughly a year as a delivery captain in the North Sea, English Channel and Irish Sea, he was fortunate to meet up with a good friend early on in the industry, who offered him his first role as 1st mate onboard a 40m San Lorenzo. Since then Tom has worked on four different yachts in permanent postions, one as First Mate and the rest as Master. All of these yachts have been from the San Lorenzo shipyard. Position fix: The yacht is currently berthed at Marina Naviera Balear in Palma de Mallorca. Tom has been based in the same marina for four years on two yachts. The yacht will leave soon, heading east to the Adriatic for the season, and returning to Palma for the 5 year survey this winter. Watch rota: “I managed to insist to the owners that we have to run with four crew in total, to keep with our manning requirements and because we tow a large tender (9m) all over the Med and this requires everyone to be on form! I like to employ mainly British crew as they understand my work ethic and my English humour (not everyone does!) I am very lucky to have kept the same Mate and Cook as I had last season and have recently employed a stewardess who is new to the industry. I have no issues employing ‘green crew’ or hiring day workers as long as they are keen and realise yachting is not just a summer job but a lifetime career to a lot of us in the industry.” Summer splendour: “This season we are heading to Venice, Croatia, Montenegro and the Ionian’s. We will most likely stop in the Aeolia islands on our return trip as the owner of the vessel has a soft spot for Stromboli as last year during a helicopter tour they, and the crew, (I picked the short straw for anchor watch) actually witnessed a large eruption first hand

Q: Is there anything lacking in Palma for the nautical sector? Or you feel that Palma leads the way? A: I am biased towards Palma as it offers 8 months of decent weather; it has a great community feel and all contractors captains and crew seem to know each other, so I can’t think of anything it’s missing. Apart from maybe a dedicated paint shed in STP. Q: What bars and restaurants do you recommend in Palma (or island wide)? A: I try to stay away from the usual haunts however I am occasionally seen in ‘Bar Zoe’ in Santa Catalina, owned by a good friend and ex-yachtie. For tapas it has to be Patxi (opposite bar Zoe) and for the getaway, I can’t tell you as it’s a secret! … but it’s about five minutes from Santa Catalina and feels like a different world. I also have to mention ‘Chi Bar’ in Palma Nova for my friend Stuart Bray. Q: What do you never go to sea without? A: My Fishing hat! It’s been with me over every sea mile I’ve ever had. Q: Scariest moment at sea? A: I was taking a yacht from Southampton to Ardglass in Northern island when I woke up to an eerie sound. When I had gone off watch we were nearing Lands End. My orders for my three hours off were for the Mate to steer clear of Lands End Lighthouse and to inform me of any changes in weather, sea state, heading etc etc. About an hour after I went to my bunk, fog enveloped the yacht, the wind dropped and the Mate on the delivery panicked and wouldn’t leave the wheel or shout through the port light to get me … we strayed violently off course. I awoke with a start to what I found out was the fog signal of Longships lighthouse. Through the fog I also saw the red sector of the light which added to the eerieness. On checking the chart and our drift we couldn’t have been more than a few hundred yards off the rocks, in the fog ,on a December night. Not to be repeated. Any comments on the industry? It would be nice if there were more yachts hiring crew for permanent, and not just seasonal, positions as unfortunately I meet so many people who are only getting a few months experience at a time and then being let go and advised to find another job. You can’t increase your seamanship knowledge if your career gets stuck in that kind of rut. Feature created by Linda Revill of Aigua Sea School
