dear islander Having just returned from a very snowy, cold and icy Northern Europe, I can confirm that ‘boot Dusseldorf‘ is justly maintaining its position as one of the leading general boat shows in the world. You’ll see more about it in our review on page 14, but from what I hear about the London show at Excel this year, it seems that the gap between them is becoming ever wider. I was snowbound in Holland which prevented me from getting to London, but it seems I didn’t miss too much, and the two hour high speed train ride from Utrecht to Dusseldorf on the appropriately named German run ICE train, turned out to be by far the easier travel option. I just wish I had allowed more days to see so much, which was spread across the 17 halls of the huge Dusseldorf Trade Fair Centre. Anyway back here in paradise, we have plenty to look forward to, as you will see in the pages of this issue. The totally revamped Palma Boat Show, is morphing into a complete nautical week with many complimentary activities in May, and the Palma Superyacht Cup in June looks like being fully subscribed with a magnificent display of yachts including several of the new breed of J Class beauties.

Peter Franklin The Islander Nautical Media S.L.

On the face of it, the signs aren’t good for the luxury yacht industry. U.S. consultancy Bain & Co. said in a recent research note that global yacht sales were expected to grow 2 percent, to 7 billion euros ($9.33 billion), in 2012, making it the worst-performing sector in the 212 billion-euro luxury industry. Within that, worldwide sales volume of luxury power yachts has fallen 30% since 2008, according to Princess Yachts.

But builders at the very top end of the market have seen rising demand for their products as the mega-rich continue to spend astronomical sums on marine opulence. In such a rarefied atmosphere, global economic problems mean little, and service is everything, which gives opportunities to those that recognise it and act accordingly.

oyster 125 on way

aigua expands palma base

+44 (0)1473 695 005 sales@oysteryachts.com _ www.oysteryachts.com

Aigua Training Team: training@aiguaseaschool.com _ 871 230 373 Aigua Sea School, based in the Santa Catalina ‘yachtie hub’ of Palma, will open the doors of its new technical training centre in early March 2013.

The First Oyster 125 Flybridge by Dubois, named Twilight by her new owner has been launched at builder’s RMK and is undergoing commissioning in preparation for sea trials.

The new centre is diagonally opposite the school’s HQ on Carrer San Magin and will host the specialist training courses of VHF/DSC Marine Radio, Radar, Diesel Engine, Elementary First Aid, Basic Sea Survival and Offshore Safety. Guest courses will also run at the new location, including Medical First Aid, Medical Care Onboard Ship and Master 200 prep courses.

David Tydeman, Oyster CEO commented: “This is a tremendous milestone for Oyster and our partnership with RMK and Dubois. The first Oyster 100 – Sarafin is now in the Caribbean and will take part in the 2013 St Barths Bucket in March. The second Oyster 100 – Penelope is currently in Malta, en route to Palma where she is available for sailing trails. This summer we will then have our third and largest ever yacht, the Oyster 125 – Twilight sailing in the Mediterranean. Recent refits at our Southampton yard, including performance yachts such as Leopard & Mari-Char III and the restoration of classics like Cambria and Merrymaid further endorse the large yacht capabilities of the Oyster Group”.

Aigua also works with ‘Endeavour Languages’ to offer the ‘Set Sail’ English language class available to ‘marineros’. “The flexibility of having two training areas will really help us cope with the demand for our courses” explains principal, Linda Revill. “When the locale became available the opportunity was too good to miss and we look forward to being able to provide our students with more options, and even more support, in their training”. The new centre will provide a study area for Aigua students, including free, superfast WIFI. The popular navigation theory workshops, provided for all Aigua Yachtmaster students free of charge once a month, will also run from the new base when the main training classroom is busy with the all-day shorebased courses. The Aigua team will soon announce new workshop dates for Yachtmaster Ocean to revise sight reductions and sextant work. Workshops will also be introduced for the Professional Practices and Responsibilities course now a mandatory requirements for all commercial endorsements.

our oceans our future

Erica Lay _(+34) 673 55 76 76 erica@elcrewco.com _ www.elcrewco.com Well following on from last issue´s introduction to the Stingray Project being launched by Asociacion Ondine we have some more news for you… In early January, Club de Mar hosted the training day for the entire team. Asociacion Ondine members Brad and Biel gave a presentation to a packed hall full of volunteers and press together with Paco from Joves Navegants. Everyone was briefed about the plans and aims of the survey and given information on how to identify all the different kinds of rays we hope to find in the area. The children from Joves Navegants really enjoyed the presentation so the Asociacion is really looking forward to the collaboration. The project kicks off at the end of this month with the first team of divers heading to investigate the area of El Delta. Twice monthly dives are planned; as nobody has ever attempted a study of rays like this before we have our hands full and exciting times ahead! The first couple of excursions will see only the marine bios diving, along with Brad who is the dedicated videographer. We are lucky enough to have 4 biologists joining us from local organisations; the first two dives will be used to fine tune the methods and make sure everything is in order ready for the spring time when we expect to see much larger numbers of rays. Two boats will be headed to the survey area, Galaxy from Joves Navegants will sail from Palma and during the onboard trip, in addition to learning how to sail, the children will be briefed about rays by the Bios. After the day´s diving, the children get to sail back and be debriefed on the findings of the surveys. It’s a little chilly right now but soon the children will be snorkeling in the survey area to carry out their own research too; the Asociacion aims to really get locals involved and educate. We are combining science and sailing – it´s going to be fun! The Asociacion is always looking for more volunteers and sponsorship ideas, so if you´d like to get involved or would like to see further info please drop us a line through the website www.asociacionondine.org.

superyacht regatta news

www.thesuperyachtcup.com (+34) 636 322 959, www.katiehandyside.com 2013 looks like being another busy year for superyacht racing, the first regatta of the year will be the Antigua Superyacht Challenge at the end of this January. In March there are two events virtually back-to-back, in the British Virgin Islands and then in St Barth’s, where more racing yachts are expected to be racing than ever before. Palma, Mallorca is preparing for a full line up of 20 entries this year and with the confirmation of the J Class yachts the spaces are being taken up fast. Last year saw numbers in Palma reduced as several yachts made the decision to head to the UK for the London Olympic celebrations and the Superyacht Cup Cowes, but this year the focus will once again be on Palma. The Notice of Race is now available on the website http://www. thesuperyachtcup.com/palma/ and entry forms can be obtained from kate@thesuperyachtcup.com The Palma fleet so far includes several boats who will have competed in the Caribbean, such as the 35m sloop P2 (Briand/Perini), Athos (Hoek/Holland Jachtbouw 62m) as well as Velsheda (Nicholsons/Dykstra/Camper & Nicholsons, 38m), Ranger (Burgess & Stephens/Dykstra/Danish Yachts, 42m) and Lionheart (Hoek/Claasen Jachtbouw 42m). The latest yacht to register is the new modern-classic 26m Tulip, designed by German Frers and built by K&M Yacht Builders in Holland. Tulip was launched in the Autumn 2012 and with her lightweight interior and carbon rig is likely to be a competitive entry.
Long-term Superyacht Cup sponsor Pantaenius have generously purchased 40 Nikon Rangefinders to help ensure safe racing at SRYA (Superyacht Racing Association) sanctioned regattas. All SYRA regattas are sailed under the Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016 and the recently approved Appendix SY (see SYC NOR). The changes to the RRS through this appendix are all based on the fundamental need to keep appropriate distance between superyachts and 40 meters is the designated minimum separation. Thanks to Yacht Insurance provider Pantaenius the range finders will be used by the on-board Safety Officers to assist safe racing practice. Sponsorship packages are still available, for more information contact: Jane@thesuperyachtcup.com

tax & legal matters: tax changes in 2013 the Corporate Tax are the possibility of tax step-up in value and the exclusion of deductible expenses: Optional Tax Step-up: Spanish resident companies, Spanish permanent establishments and individual entrepreneurs have the option to step-up the tax value of the following assets:

Carlos Espinosa - Solicitor and Tax Adviser (+34) 627 41 32 01, carlos.espinosa@iurisnautic.com As every year at the end of December the Budget Law – Ley de Presupuestos - announces the main changes in Tax Law. The ones applicable for 2013 are included in the Law 16/2012, adopting a set of tax measures that entered into force on 28 December 2012. These dictate the last tax amendments. This article sets out the main changes: a) Income Tax: - The deduction for investment in principal dwelling shall disappear from the 1st of January 2013, although there will be provisions for those who were deducting in the past years - Short-term capital gains (i.e., generated over a period of less than a year) derived by Spanish resident individuals are now taxable at the general progressive rates instead of the formerly applicable 21% flat rate. - Housing benefits for employees. The valuation rule for housing benefits is amended; as from 1 January 2013, the general rule is that the remuneration in-kind is equal to the rental paid by the employer. However, there is a provision according to which the former valuation rules, which generally are more favorable to the employee, continue to apply in fiscal year 2013 if the employee received the housing benefits before 4 October 2012. - Option to defer taxation upon transfer of tax residence to another Member State. As a result of the decision issued on 12 July 2012 by the European Court of Justice in C-269/09 (European Commission v. Kingdom of Spain) on exit taxation for individuals, the Personal Income Tax Law is amended to allow the deferral of taxation when individual Spanish resident taxpayers transfer their tax residence to another EU Member State. In this case, the individual may now choose between (1) including deferred income in the tax return corresponding to the last year in which he/she is a Spanish tax resident or (2) filing an amending tax return and paying in the tax due when the income is accrued, without triggering surcharges, penalties or delay interest. - Elimination of the 40% reduction on severance payments exceeding €1 million - Severance payments for the termination of an employment relationship or for the removal of Directors from the Board that exceed €1 million may no longer benefit from a 40% reduction (applicable under certain conditions). b) Non-residents’ Income Tax. The Special tax on Spanish Real Estate Properties for Non-Spanish residents, equal to 3% of the cadastral value of the Spanish real estate property, is now only applicable to tax haven resident entities. c) Corporate Tax. Among others the most important news in

- Fixed assets and immovable investments situated in Spain or abroad. - Fixed assets being leased under financial lease agreements, subject to the exercise of the purchase option. - Concessions which are recorded as intangible assets. The tax value of inventories and assets that are fully depreciated or amortized and assets the fair market of which is equal to or below their book value may not be stepped up. Non Tax-deductible expenses: Severance payments for the termination of employment relationships, or for the removal of Directors from the Board in excess of €1 million, or in excess of the amount that is exempt from taxation are no longer tax deductible. The wording relating to the limitation where the exempt amount is over €1 million is unclear d) Net Wealth Tax for individuals – residents and non-residents – is also applicable for 2013.

Emma - Bluewater Algarve emma@bluewateralgarve.com Ola Amigos! I hope that you have all recovered from the holiday season, I do hope that it’s not just me that needs the whole of January to get back to normal! Time to knuckle down and get all of the yachts ready to go out to play! Of course, we have the joy of valentines day just around the corner and for those of you who feel like treating your special someone to something special without breaking the bank, you will be pleased to know that our capital city, Lisbon, is best value for romance! That’s right, reviewers on Tripadvisor, the largest international travel website, were oozing praise once again on Portugal’s Lisbon by electing it the best city in the world in terms of quality for price. Lisbon’s inhabitants also earned praise after being considered the friendliest locals in Europe and the third most friendly in the world, after the natives of Cancun, Mexico, and the people of Tokyo, Japan. To make things even better, TAP airline (Transportes Aéreos Portugueses), in operation since 1945, is one of the world’s safest airlines according to the 2012 list published by the Hamburgbased Jet Airline Crash Data Evaluation Center (JACDEC). TAP remains among the few airlines that has suffered no accidents in more than three decades. The only other European carrier in the top 10 is British airways in tenth place. Portugal will be hosting its first international luxury lifestyle event between 25 and 30 April. The Arade Pavilion, on the outskirts of the sleepy fishing village of Ferragudo here in the Algarve will draw hundreds of high rollers from across the globe and will be showcasing the world’s premier luxury brands in an unprecedented event loosely affiliated to the internationally famous ‘Millionaire’s Fair’. It will be very attractive to big spenders from around who are looking to shop for high-end goods in the relative peace and discretion that the Algarve offers. Inspired by the travelling exhibition launched in Amsterdam a decade ago, the Algarve’s ‘Carnival of Luxury’ “has evolved to more than just a shopping experience – we want it to be a showcase of everything Portugal has to offer, and a bit of a statement really, that Portugal is still open for business and can be up there with the best of other industry” explains entrepreneur Luís da Silva, of Vida de Luxe. As always, if you want to know anything further about the news, just email me and I’ll fill you in on the details! Até à próxíma!

contest yachts go for motor

www.contestyachts.com BOOT Düsseldorf 2013 has seen Netherlands based Contest Yachts reach another major milestone in an illustrious history spanning more than five decades. The renowned Dutch yard gave a global premiere to its first ever motoryacht, the Contest 52MC, a 16 metre seaworthy looking vessel which synthesises the lines and detailing of a sailing yacht, with the speed and comfort of a luxurious powerboat. Having made its name over the past half-century for a global fleet of sailing yachts, Contest’s decision to extend its core values of quality, comfort, performance and design into the motoryacht world came in response to longstanding market requests. “The owners of the first Contest 52MC had actually approached us a number of years ago and they were not the only potential clients that we had to disappoint at that time,” says Arjen Conijn, managing director of Contest Yachts. “No one likes to turn business down but we were determined to wait until everything was in place before embarking on such a radically different path. And it gives us real pleasure that we were able to reward the patience of the owners of the first Contest motoryacht, who have been intrinsically involved in the project and given a great deal of valuable input. They’ve told us that it was worth the wait and I am confident that the visitors to BOOT Düsseldorf in January will agree.” Created in partnership with designer Georg Nissen and Vripack Naval Architects, the Contest 52MC will appeal to both former sailyacht owners and committed motoryacht fans. The starting points were Contest Yachts’ core values of quality, comfort performance and design. As standard the motoryacht is fitted with two quiet Cummins Common Rail engines, synchronised with the bow and stern thrusters via an Integrated Docking® system for easy manoeuvring. While the owners of the first model have opted for the largest Cummins available, the yard is also offering a hybrid model with two electric motors offering silent propulsion. Among the high-tech options that have been fitted onboard the first Contest 52MC is a Seakeeper gyrostabiliser, which will further complement the performance of her modern halfglider hull. During sea trials the yacht has already exceeded the expectations with a very impressive performance. The Contest 52MC is CE-A certified and meets all the requirements for long journeys on inland waterways, coastal areas and the open seas. Characterised by peaceful, modern lines, the interior from the boards of Wetzels Brown Partners fully reflects the sailing mind-set in terms of practicality, elegance and refinement.

dusseldorf boat show 2013

For more info on The Islander’s boot Dusseldorf picks go to: www.contestyachts.com / www.thegreatcup.com /www.trimarans.com Europe’s marine industry is a thriving branch of commerce with 37,000 enterprises engaged in lively competition, a 234,000-strong workforce and annual sales of EUR 20 billion. Despite the currently problematical economic situation, Europe’s marine industry still leads the world and exports its products all over the globe. However, our ageing society is confronting the industry with major challenges. So say the European Boating Industry Association, who were involved in a conference of yachting industry leaders held at the Dusseldorf Boat Show on 23rd January. Some of the research data facts presented for consideration made interesting reading: * The boating population is getting older. * Different age (and gender) groups have different needs. * Boat builders have to gather data enabling them to design boats according to the needs of special age target groups. * Elderly people have both time and money. * 5 more years of a boat owner’s life spent onboard means 13 billion euros additional turnover for the German marine industry. With sales markets flat in many parts of Europe, the international yachting and water sports business was definitely concentrating its exhibition activities on boot Düsseldorf. The relatively stable German market and Europe’s central exhibition venue are considered a safe harbour for firms and which ensured a good turnout in the halls of the Düsseldorf exhibition grounds. Around 1,650 exhibitors from 63 countries were presenting their new boat models and product innovations in all water sport disciplines - from fishing rods to superyachts at the 44th boot Düsseldorf held between 19th and 27th January. They filled 17 halls with a total exhibition floor space of 213,000 square metres, displaying 1,700 boats of all sizes and types. As is our wont The Islander picked out a couple of our own favourites even though it was impossible to cover all 17 halls in a couple of days at the show. One of them you can see on page 12 where we have done a separate review. This is the Contest 52MC, the first motorboat designed and produced by this renowned Dutch sailing yacht builder, and what a debut she is!

Obviously with one eye on the ‘maturing’ sailing population, this would definitely be a yacht for a life long sailing enthusiast who wants a less athletic time at sea in his later life, but does not want to be seen on a ‘plastic fantastic’ floating gin palace. But, at just shy of 1 million euros, she won’t be for somebody who is trading in their 20ft day sailer! This year boot Dusseldorf extended the sailing boat show in Halls 16 and 17 to include the small but exclusive multihull sailing boat segment in Hall 15 as its own exhibition area. Catamarans and trimarans of all shapes and sizes were on show, including numerous new models. And the segment had a new Cat lounge with restaurant area, allowing customers to meet and exchange information. With the burgeoning interest in multi hulls, partly driven by the new breed of America’s Cup boats, and the younger sailor’s thirst for moving ever faster across the water without any noise or fumes, this seemed to be a very good move by the organisers. The interest around that area was clear to see, especially with some fantastic video presentations being screened next to the boats on display, which helped to bring them to life, somewhat making up for them being static exhibits. So, our other two picks from the show are multi hulls… why not jump on the bandwagon? Firstly for the real speed freaks… we have the GC32 from another Dutch designer and builder the ‘Great Cup Team .’ The GC Cup is in business to create a series of one design performance catamarans that will soon have a regatta class of its own, with a lightweight concept allowing great flexibility and choice of sailing areas, weighing in at just 750kg with its full carbon fibre construction. The company is owned and founded by Laurent Lenne (CEO) who brings his understanding of business, product marketing, ICT experience and sailing experience to the table, having previously sailed extensively in the F18 class. Laurent is backed up by Andrew Macpherson (COO) who in in addition to many years experience with the Tornado and F18 both from sailing and product development, has raced and managed Extreme 40’s programs and several One-design keelboat campaigns. A keen racer with many top results in the F18 class worldwide, Andrew brings a wealth of practical experience to the development of the GC32.

Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) manufacturers the GC32 hulls and components, PCT are one of the largest composite manufacturers in the world and currently produce the Farr 400 one design alongside several custom race yachts. Southern Spars developed a custom solution for the Mast, Boom, Spin and Cross Beams. The full carbon construction and 2 piece mast are all engineered with Southern Spars own software. At the product launch in Dubai last November the team were sailing downwind at 20 knots in a 12-knot breeze. They say that for those looking for some lively, competitive and affordable multihull racing activity, the GC32 should be on their watch list for sure. The other eye catcher for us, (which for a change was not from Holland) was the Danish built Dragonfly 32 from Quorning Boats. This is going to fill the gap between the Dragonfly 28 and Dragonfly 35. The boat is more like a scaled down Dragonfly 35 but is not trailable like the Dragonfly 28.

The boat has a nice big cockpit, which offers space enough for the whole crew. All halyards and lines are led to the cockpit for easy and safe handling, perfect also for shorthanded sailing. “The floats are designed even bigger compared to our previous design, which makes the boat more powerful and fast. It is undoubtedly the fastest boat in our fleet,” say Quorning’s sales staff.

proficiency in medical first aid courses training to that level) but the Medical Care qualification does need a minimum of a five yearly Update when a person is taking responsibility for providing medical care onboard. We have been running these courses out of Club de Mar Medical for nearly six years (and our predecessors since the early nineties) and it is clear to us that there are a number of areas of confusion which continue to dog individuals. Dr. Ken Prudhoe - Club de Mar Medical Centre (+34) 639 949 125, drken@clubdemarmedical.com To be addressed by one’s full name can send a shudder down the spine because there is a good chance we are in trouble about a misdeed done or a deed not done. At the same time, our friends may fail to recognise us because our smart name may sound nothing like our nickname or our everyday shortened version. This is true of First Aid training as well because we get so accustomed to informal alternative nomenclature that confusion arises when we see the formal title of the various qualifications. There is no doubt that this affects prospective students on our courses who are confused as to what is actually required at the next stage in their training. Everyone is clear about basic STCW training and the one day medical component of Elementary First Aid. This particular medical module is sufficient right up to Officer of the Watch. The next qualification is then Proficiency in Medical First Aid which is required for Chief Mate tickets and for Engineer tickets and these also require, amongst other things, Advanced Fire Fighting which goes to make up an advanced form of STCW. As a result, (Proficiency in) Medical First Aid can get renamed as Advanced First Aid but it is the same qualification and needs a training course stretching over several days. Successful completion of the Medical First Aid qualification is the pre-requisite for the Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship course which extends over five days and was previously known as the Ship Captain’s Medical course. This qualification is required by captains and also by anyone onboard who is delegated to provide medical care and they must renew the certificate at least every five years by successful completion of the three day Update course. There is more information about all this on Marine Information Note MIN 385 (M) which makes the very valuable point that the Medical First Aid and Medical Care certificates are not time limited (when offered as evidence of

www.clubdemarmedical.com

For instance, many regard the Elementary First Aid course as the only first aid course below the Ship Captain’s Medical Care course and they run the risk of wasting time and money by presenting for the senior course without the relevant Medical First Aid entry requirements. We have a strict registration procedure, as required for MCA approval, and this filters out candidates before they spend on fares and accommodation but we are still aware of disappointment when confusion continues. Another issue is that of failing to recognise that there is a specific sequence for these various qualifications and that the dates on the certificates have to reflect compliance with this sequence. It should not be possible to do a Medical Care or Update course without the Medical First Aid certificate and getting the qualifying dates out of correct sequence will lead to queries when submitted to the authorities. Sometimes people pick up certificates which sound like the real thing but closer examination reveals that they do not have the correct STCW reference standard. This can be galling in cases where the syllabus may be very similar to MCA approved training such as diving or lifeguard training but it is crucial to look for the reference standard. Our website quotes the relevant standard for all our medical courses and these are international references against which to check any paperwork before relying on the qualification for employment tickets and promotion. It is small print stuff but the few minutes spent checking can make all the difference – for instance, Elementary First Aid is STCW95 A-VI/1-3 , Medical First Aid is STCW95 A-VI/4-1 and Medical Care/Update is STCW95 A-VI/4-2 – spotting the differences will repay the effort many times over! Maybe to add to the confusion, we now have the Manila amendments to the STCW Convention and Code, ie STCW 2010, which is operative from last January. It is predicted that this will increase, for example, the scope of refresher training in medical courses – we shall need even more clarity!

dragons in mallorca!

By Marcus Desaunois. More Info: FB: ´Classic Dragons Mallorca´ _ 670 312 731 (Marcus on ´Fidelitas´ Club de Mar) The International Dragon is a one-design keelboat, designed by Norwegian Johan Anker in 1929. In 1948 the Dragon became an Olympic Class, a status it retained until the Munich Olympics in 1972. Its dimensions are length 8,90 beam 1,95 and draft1,20 m. Till date it is still one of the most popular one-design classes. A difference is made between Fiberglass Dragons and Classic wooden Dragons. Currently there are 3 popular one design-keelboat classes active in Mallorca. The Dragon, J-80 and the flying 15. The FF is a 6 m. fast and wet boat, wetsuit obligatory. The J-80, a 8m. boat, with 4 to 5 crew, is momentarily very popular, with a local fleet of around 15. In races as the Palma vela we see up to 24 on the start line. Great high level racing, as I have experienced my self. Why Dragons? We have noticed, that some of the J-80 boat owners have thrown in the towel or even sold their boats, as it requires a lot of commitment to be somewhat successful, as they are now competing against more and more professional teams. Since about 10 years ago, Mallorca has his own small fleet of 10 classic wooden Dragons, which are now moored on their own dock in Real Club Nautico de Palma, and regular races are organized by RNCP, Club de Mar, Portixol and C.N Arenal. Windward-leeward races, most times 3 in a day are raced together with the J-80 and the FF. Highlights are the Sofia Cup, Palma Vela, Club de Mar Classics and de Trofeo Almirante Conde de Barcelona. A total of around 20 regattas per year. You can pick up a wooden dragon, in a fairly good state, between 10.000 to 20.000 Eur. Holland, England and Germany are the countries to look for one. RCNP gives us a great discount on mooring fees, and the free use of the crane, for being an active racing class. The racing is very exiting, the joy of being a one-design with very tight rules: no handicap, 1st. in wins!

maritime systems offer bnwas

Graham Bradley (+34) 636 196 522 www.marisyst.com After completing the relevant training, Palma based Maritime Systems have been appointed as suppliers and installers of the AMI Marine Ltd. Bridge Navigation Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) together with other AMI products. Under LY3, installation of BNWAS is now becoming mandatory for certain category vessels. Graham Bradley of Maritime Systems said; “The AMI BN 150 is designed with fleet operators in mind, and is the ideal BNWAS for retrofitting to any size of vessel. Its a competitively priced system that does not compromise on quality.” “An integral Backup Duty Officer Selection function is included as standard to allow any combination of 5 locations to receive 2nd stage alert.” Graham further pointed out the system’s flexibility with reset buttons and alarm sounders that can be mounted internally or externally with the sounders having adjustable audio levels and tones for use in passageways, ships office or bridge wings etc. Optional motion sensors can be supplied for convenient resetting of the BNWAS countdown, without any effort from the officer on watch. Built and designed in the UK, the BN150 BNWAS is fully Type Approved to IEC 62616, incorporating MSC128 (75), and carries a 2 years warranty as standard. AMI have a global network of service agents to provide fast, effective worldwide support for added peace of mind. For more information time lines and vessel category’s etc. or a demonstration of the AMI Marine BNWAS contact Graham Bradley.

Beginner owners enjoy a steep highly enjoyable learning curve, and are always well directed by the rest of the fleet crews. Most boats in Mallorca, are now owned by individuals active in the local marine industry. A bunch of boat captains, a marine surveyor, a well renowned yacht designer and a yacht service owner. All great sailors and professional socialites after the racing! Some of the boats have 2 or 3 owners. With these boats this works really well, as you need 3 racing crew anyway! With the Dragons, the racing is still of a high level, but next to racing, we also enjoy maintaining these gorgeous boats, making improvements here and there and always keeping an eye on the neighbors ´tuning´ The boats are all moored next to each other in RCNP. We enjoy the racing, but also enjoy owning and sailing some of the most beautiful classic boats ever built. Boats like ´Endevour´ ´Velsheda´ and ´Rainbow´, the famous J-Class, are actually big Dragons, due to their similar design and sail plan.

galley goddess Hola todos, Tis the month of Cupids love, red roses, Valentines Day - February brings us romance, intrigue and a healthy bank balance for the Hallmark card company and florists all around the world. Luckly I´ve been doing a little research of the top ten aphrodisiac sexy food and thought that I would share it with you and maybe get a little loving going in the oven. Oysters instantly rear to attention here - good old oysters, the cliche of all aphrodisiac food. Eating them is such a sensual experience, you get the fresh taste of the sea, the slippery, silky texture as you swallow. Hmmmmm...........Casanova, the 18th century lover was reputed to eat 50 raw oysters for breakfast every day. What a shame that horny old goat didn´t have access to viagra? Oysters, you either love em or hate em, but, because of their high zinc content help produce the little swimmers and get the old libido out for a dance or two, maybe even a salsa. Another food that unobtrusively puts a zing in your thing is unpretentious honey. Sweet, sticky honey is apparently a great source of boron, a trace mineral that helps the body use and metabolize estrogen, the female sex hormone. This mineral also enhances that bad boy of hormones, Mr Testosterone who is responsible for sex drive and orgasm in both men and women. Honey is very versitile and fun, but remember, if you want to get a bit frisky, you need to actually eat it. Believe it or not, garlic can get you in the mood and help get your blood flowing down to your sexy parts as it is chock a block full of allicin. Stinking a bit to get a bit. With all this in mind, here is a fab recipe that will get your juices goin - Baked Oysters with Saffron-honey Glaze 50 g unsalted butter 1 small onion 1 teaspoon minced garlic Half cup plain flour 1/3 cup dry white wine 1 teaspoon saffron threads 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons honey salt to taste ground pepper 24 freshly shucked oysters, left on half shells Preheat oven to 260C. Heat butter in fying pan over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and saute till transparent. Sprinkle the flour and stir to avoid any lumps. Add white wine, saffron threads, heavy cream and honey and slightly reduce the mixture until it thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon the sauce over the oysters, fully covering them. Bake until pipping hot. Serve immediately.

master bates: overheard & overboard

Semper in excreta solum profundum variat So, are we going to see hordes of lovely high spending luxury charter yachts, and loads of eager to ‘splash the cash’ nautical tourists in Spanish waters this summer? We would for sure, if the EU ruling on proportionate charging of matriculation tax on charter was adopted! So what is happening with the second letter to Madrid asking for a response to this official notification of ‘fiscal irregularity?’ Its 18 months now since the first one was sent....what would they do if you and I waited that long to respond to a letter from the Spanish tax man? And what the hell are these Eurocrat bods doing letting Madrid sleep on the job, while Spain’s bad12,000 a month! ly needed tourism revenue goes to Italy, France, Greece, Croatia, Malta, Cyprus etc?’ Could it be that the average Euro MP on their 12,000 euros per month, plus exes and all the perks, is actually not too bothered about such paltry matters as a level fiscal playing field for nautical tourism, or are they snoozing on watch as well?

12,000 a month!

I REST MY CASE!!

And now onto one of my very favourite hate topics, yes you guessed it......... its Ryanair! Like most of us I did a bit of travelling over the holidays, and in Barcelona I must be a marked man, because a certain short arsed moustachioed Ryanair 12,000 a month! ground staff bully always winds me up, by insisting that my iPad has to go into my carry-on case. “But it only happens in Barcelona”, I plead with him. “Everywhere else seems to accept that its actually the same as a book or a newspaper.” “Are you banning magazines onboard?” I shout at him in a rage! But its like speaking to stone effigy... where do they find these miserable robotic jobsworths? Anyway its nice to see that Ryanair’s tailplane logo has been creatively modified to reflect their true attitude towards customer service...

Talking of strange ways to get around (or not) as the case may be. How about something different in the nautical leisure category? The Dusseldorf Boat Show claimed to have something for everybody in its 17 halls. And maybe amongst them, a few things that most of us wouldn’t be seen dead onboard. This particular category seemed to be most prevalent in the floating camper exhibition area, where over creativity seems to have gone hand in glove with a liberal dose of totally eccentric wackiness! They say a picture paints a thousand words, so need I say more? Just cast your beady eyes on this beauty... and I don’t mean the Cowgirl dummy on top! Does anyone remember those dreaded words; ’Ley de Costas’ followed by the year the ‘Law of the Coasts’ passed into being... 1988? How it resounded around the yacht clubs, ports and marinas back in 2006, when its retrospectively enacted wording was brought to bare on the remaining concession periods for many marinas. Puerto Portals, Club de Mar and Puerto Pollensa, to name but three, all faced a severe shortening of their tenure, with directly damaging repercussions on mooring prices, and a sudden lack of security surrounded the whole marina business scenario. Well now the ‘nuevo ley de costas’ has been drafted and is expecetd to become statute. This will in effect, give back the original concession periods to the current holders, and entitle them to bid for a further 75 years when they expire. For example, this would mean that Puerto Portals, which was probably one of the highest profile casualties of the act, would keep its concession until 2031 instead of a much closer date of 2018. I’m sure that the Graf family who own the concession are already making plans on how to capitalise on this turn of fortune when it comes to pass. Maybe its time to secure a mooring, while they are still affordable... So, this old retired sailor puts on his old uniform and heads for the docks once more, for old times’ sake. He engages a prostitute and takes her up to a room. He’s soon going at it as well as he can for a guy his age, but needing some reassurance, he asks, ‘How am I doing?’ The prostitute replies, ‘Well, old sailor, you’re doing about three knots.’ ‘Three knots?’ he asks. ‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ She says, ‘You’re knot hard, you’re knot in, and you’re knot getting your money back.’ Just room for a couple more: A bloke is watching a film with creepy organ music on the TV and suddenly yells, “Don’t enter that church, you stupid idiot !!!” His wife asks him, “What are you watching?” Husband replies, “Our bloody wedding video.” I said to the wife, “Get me a newspaper” “Don’t be silly,” she said “You can borrow my iPad” That spider never knew what hit it....

sunseeker in the news

The Sunseeker International Distributor Conference, held late last year was in the stunning location of Phuket, Thailand and was attended by over 200 Sunseeker dealers and guests. Sunseeker London received “Best Overall Distributor of the Year” the uppermost award presented during the awards evening. This was greatly received by David Lewis and Christopher Head and their teams across the world. The winner of the “Best New Dealer” was awarded to Sunseeker Spain, a new company headed up by Richard Tilley and Miguel Angel Linares and incorporates Sunseeker Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Stiges and Roses. mind your caviar

More info from Philippe at: (+34) 610 767 423 www.caviar-espana.com Philipe Quessaud who represents the Caviar Perlita brand in Spain has asked us to flag up a few points, for the benefit of those who may not be fully aware of the situation with the international protection of Sturgeon. Philipe says that some Chefs have had controls boarding (in port and at sea) with customs and police asking the question; “Do you have any caviar aboard the yacht? In France and Italy this has been quite common and becoming more so in Spain. Apparently for every 400 tons per year sold, only 120 tons are legal and secure (with sanitary controls, microbes, cold chain etc) and of the 120 tons - something like 80 % is farmed Chinese Caviar. Please note that legal caviar will be properly labeled, and that you should look for the labels that tell you where it came from and when: Legal caviar has stickers underneath the tin and not on the top; some tins pretend to be what they are not, by labeling with names such as KALUGA. But this is not from the farmed Siberian BELUGA sturgeon, its from China! The famous French Beluga caviar will have the first three letters BAE on the label, denominating the approved Baeri Siberian family producer. Examples of reliable coded labeling are: BAE/C/FR2012/ FR33527003 sometimes followed by a C or W (cultured or wild); FR33527003: This is the sanitary European code. Obligatory with all products sold in Europe, as for milk, butter and meat etc...

The Sunseeker Distributor Conference is an annual event hosted by Sunseeker International and the Distributor Awards highlight the continued success of its dealer network worldwide. This is the 8th year in succession that Sunseeker London and associated companies have been recognised for the achievements and highlighting their continued dedication to Sunseeker boat sales and customer service. Meanwhile the new 155 superyacht flagship of the Sunseeker brand is moving towards her completion in 2014. This 47.5m (155ft) yacht takes the concept of series building with personal customisation a step further than others, the modular composite build methodology virtually allowing owners a free hand, not just in the interior but also in the design of the actual superstructure, from classic to futuristic, from North American to Mediterranean to Asian styling. With a top speed of up to 26 knots, the 155 Yacht will accommodate up to 12 guests and 10 crew members. With a range of 4500 NM, and sliding in just below 500 gross tonnes, her RINA commercial and MCA LY3 coding keeps costs of commercial operation within bounds. With inset ship´s balconies, transverse garaging of yacht tenders and toys, and a very private megayacht beach club with lower deck dayroom, folding platform and tender docking, there is a great deal of innovation throughout. This stunning luxury yacht is more than 40 per cent bigger in interior volume than the previous flagship 40 Metre Yacht. The flagship tri-deck yacht, which is being built for Formula One legend Eddie Jordan, will become the first Sunseeker to receive a fully-painted finish. For this reason a clear gel undercoat has been used in the hull construction..

With more than 30 films to his credit, the late Michael Winner certainly made his mark over the years working with some of the great and memorables such as Sophia Loren, Charles Bronson, Oliver Reed, Marlon Brando, Michael Caine and Roger Moore. Latterly he became synonymous for the insurance” disaster ads calming his ever suffering “wife” down with the immortal catchphrase “Calm down dear, it’s a commercial” Paying tribute to her husband of two years, Mrs Winner said: “Michael was a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous. “A light has gone out in my life.” Ah yes Mrs Winner and similarly for a host of other great stars and directors, a light is also slowly flickering out in the film and television industry with so many true greats passing on to pastures new. Not wishing to be a party pooper but on another sad, annoying and disgusting note Paralympian British wheelchair fencing champion Adrian Derbyshire was the victim of a burglary at his home. Thieves got away with much of the star’s most prized equipment including his wheelchair, swords, Paralympic torch and several gold and silver medals. The 38-year-old who took up his sport after a brain haemorrhage four years ago said “It’s completely devastating and soul-destroying,” Police have apparently arrested three men, let’s hope they recover his specialist gear which is said to include coaching aids used for teaching his sport to disabled children. Yes Batesy B******s Oh come all ye budding chefs…get a load of these…. Fugu.. Well the old puffer fish might look cute but watch out for the poison which can paralyse and suffocate, want to munch on Fugu? Then ensure a licensed chef prepares the fish…. you’ll know one when you find one (chef that is) he’s still alive having survived a stressful exam whereby he prepares the dish and eats it himself! Ackee plant, the national fruit of Jamaica, eat it too ripe or not ripe enough and you could end up with Jamaican vomiting sickness, seizures, or fatal hypo glycaemia…..joy of joys eh!.... Blood clams considered one of the tastiest Chinese delicacies can come with some nasty after-effects such as hepatitis A, E, dysentery and typhoid due to some methods of preparation. However, if you encounter these red clams in a sushi dish, they should be safe to eat……..think I might just pass thankkku. Sannakji (wriggling octopus) Korean delicacy Sannakji is not for the faint hearted; minimal preparation is required as raw baby octopus is simply dismembered, smothered in sesame oil and served……enoughs enough me thinks, so swiftly moving on!! Beer….. Apparently it’s lighter than you think! Recent research has shown that a beer belly isn’t always a beer drinker’s par for the course and yippee it also contains lots of B vitamins, these lower the level of homocyteine in your blood (an indicator of inflammation, coronary problems, strokes and thrombosis). No Batesy, get it into context you cannot use the excuse that you are going down the pub to get your five a day!!

international nautical week in palma

Need a copy of this press pack for a colleague? Get it from YouSendIt at : http://goo.gl/pa8ib The 30th Palma International Boat Show which will run from 1st to 5th of May 2013, signals a completely new approach by the organisers, promising to deliver the variety and vibrancy that its host city is justly famous for. The new government in The Balearics has harnessed the joint resources of the Palma City Council and a number of key players from the significant private yachting sector in Mallorca, in order to totally revamp the format of the show which started back in 1983, on the north side of the Island in Port Alcudia. Since then Alcudia itself has spawned the well known Alcudiamar luxury marina complex, and other ports around the islands have seen the development of popular sailing clubs and internationally renowned marinas such as: Club de Mar, Real Club Nautico, Marina Port and Moll Vell in Palma, Port Adriano in El Toro, Club de Vela in Andratx, Cala d’Or Yacht Club and Marina Ibiza to name but a few! The Bay of Palma now sees some of the most high profile and exciting regattas staged every year, due to its perfect sailing conditions, wide open seascape and highly competent local regatta organizing teams. These include the Copa del Rey, Princess Sofia, Palma Superyacht Cup, the Classic Trofeo Almirante Conde de Barcelona, plus dozens of others across all the seasons featuring amongst them, Lasers, Flying 15s, Dragons, J80’s and Optimists for young sailors. During the same period the marine services infrastructure in The Balearics has grown exponentially, offering absolutely everything a yacht owner, captain or crew could possibly need. This includes the yachting industry’s best known brokers, charterers and managers, the largest repair and refit facilities in the Mediterranean, and a multitude of dealers, chandlers, sailmakers, marine engineers, surveyors etc. etc. Not surprisingly the ownership and management of these companies is truly international in nature. Nautical entrepreneurs have come to The Balearics from just about every corner of the globe, many of them arriving by sea on sabbatical sailing trips and deciding to stay permanently, using their experience and practical skills to build specialist marine businesses. It goes without saying that the entertainment, catering, food and drinks selection is equally international and varied, with just as many foreign nationalities offering something for every taste and language, both in Palma, and in all of the island’s ports. Then there is the rich cultural history of an ancient trading and fishing port, the trendy tapas bars, the imposing and

pristine Palma Cathedral, the Palma Aquarium with Europe’s deepest shark tank...the beaches, the excellent wines, and of course the glorious early summer Mediterranean sunshine! There has never been a better opportunity to see all of this showcased, and to experience all of its facets and variety, than to visit or exhibit at the 30th Palma International Boat Show, or put more accurately; Immerse yourself in the Palma de Mallorca Nautical Week... And don’t forget, the Palma Boat Show is still a truly outdoor event, no stuffy halls or chilly air conditioned tents, just a pleasant walk around in temperate ambient conditions, with enough shade and plenty of places to sit and relax with a cool drink whenever you want to. No ‘boat show fatigue or burn out’... guaranteed! In summary here are the Palma Nautical Week activities and events that are designed to suit all international and local visitors, be they tourists, potential boat buyers, existing boat owners, yachting industry professionals, or yachting/ luxury lifestyle entrepreneurs and journalists. 1st to 5th May 2013 - 30th Palma International Boat Show. crew show palma 2013

To take part, exhibiting, sponsoring or both, contact: crewshow@dovaston.com Following on from several years of successful CrewShows, this year´s event is all set to go, and looks like it´s going to be lots of fun again! Following feedback from the last show, the main sponsors dovaston Crew, have made some adaptations to continue to improve the event but crucially, they haven´t increased the price for exhibitors, the price remains the same. They have a variety of new exhibitors signing up and are actively seeking businesses that will be interesting to crew to continue to make the show the most relevant around. Main points of the day will be:- Exhibitors lunch from 1pm to 3pm to network with other like minded business people - Doors will open to the crew from 4pm. There will be a hog roast plus satellite bars offering both wine and beer. Live music and presenting will be once again from the lovely Nicki Stixx - Pool golf went down well last year so will be running this again. This year it will be in aid of Ondine Association Stingray Program Plus, there will be a charity raffle if you would like to donate a prize then please let us know - We will be offering Captain´s Tables dinner options this year so that you can entertain and relax after the main exhibition closes for the day, and the crew party will continue until 11pm Plenty of previous exhibitors have already signed up. Every year the CrewShow runs out of exhibitor space, so if you would like to have a space at this year´s show then you need to be quick off the mark and get your name down. Vicki McLeod is coordinating the event for Dovaston Crew again this year. She says that the CrewShow is an important social event for the season, as well as a fantastic means for local businesses to have face to face contact with those who will be requiring their services throughout the coming year. So, make sure you put the date in your diary: Friday 26th April 2013 Mood Beach Bar and Restaurant in Costa D’en Blanes, Portals

antibes yacht show 2013

Don’t miss the next Antibes Yacht Show and consult the AYS website for more info: www.antibesyachtshow.com

Mallorca Charterpoint in Puerto Portals, Mallorca have added a brand new yacht to their charter fleet for the 2013 season. New models coming into charter have been a little less in evidence since the recession started to bite back in 2008, and Charterpoint have had a lot of demand for them, so they expect this one to be very busy from the off!

For this year’s Antibes Yacht Show which will take place April 18th -21st, the organisers have announced that they will provide free Wi-Fi for the exhibitors and the visitors of the show. Global Marine Communications has been a partner of the show for the last 2 years showing that they can manage Wi-Fi connections that work properly.

The Bavaria Virtess 420 flybridge has a spacious, comfortable cockpit with magnificent 360 degree vision. Behind the pilot seat (which accommodates two people), there is a generous six-person corner seating area. The co-pilot seat also transforms into a comfortable sun lounger. And for evening entertainment the 420 comes perfectly equipped with barbecue and wet bar, including refrigerator and icemaker. In the saloon area below, there is the outstanding functionality you would expect to find. The pantry has a microwave, coffee machine, oven and a designer sink, while the drawers and folding doors of the high-quality units provide plenty of intelligent storage options. Entering the saloon from the cockpit, one is welcomed by a comfortable lounge area with corner seating and a large coffee table. The sliding glass doors open fully to create maximum space or can be closed for greater privacy. Both the central seat bench and the cockpit table can be moved via an innovative rail system. This enables the cockpit to be reconfigured according to individual requirements – creating additional space when entertaining or more intimacy for a sun downer. The saloon can also be rearranged to create more space when dining in larger numbers. Easy access to the water is taken care of by the large hydraulic swimming platform with integrated swimming ladder.

Costas Charalambous, sales director of Global Marine Communications is thrilled to handle such a challenge. He commented; “It is our experience that something as simple as Wi-Fi is all too often forgotten at trade shows and whilst this leaves us bemused and baffled, it does nothing to further the impression the Yachting Industry has about Communications companies in general. We have made it our mission to change these perceptions through consistent high quality and customer focused service provision. Fortunately a chance encounter introduced us to them and we have been happy to provide a service to the show for the last 2 years. This service has become indispensable particularly for key decision makers whilst away but still needing to be in touch with their colleagues back home.”

Below deck, the Virtess 420 excels with fine-quality materials, excellent workmanship and innovative interior solutions. The luxury owner’s cabin, two guest cabins and generous wet rooms with separate showers all help underline the relaxed and first-class atmosphere onboard. If longer trips are planned, there is an option to fit a washing machine. On both sides of the yacht the large windows allow plenty of light to enter, ensuring a welcoming and comfortable ambiance.

“In our opinion something as mundane as Wi-Fi should be readily available to organisers, exhibitors, press, delegates & visitors. Our goal is to take something many find complex and difficult to deliver and turn it into something simple, seamless & ubiquitous to our customers and their guests regardless of the arena in which we are operating.” Antibes Yacht Show is preparing its 7th year; along with Global Marine Communications, the 2013 show will have other prestigious partners such as Porsche, Champagne De Castelnau, Henry de Bellegarde… The team of The Superyacht Group will again sponsor the seminar area and AYS is happy to welcome Yachts International as a sponsor of the VIP Lounge. The Islander as part of the XMMI group is an official media partner of AYS this year. The show is expecting around 190 exhibitors from various countries (U.K, U.SA., the Netherlands, Turkey, Cyprus, Italy…) and about 120 yachts above 20 meters. As usual the seminars held will be informative and free for the exhibitors and visitors. Friday is already booked for the ISS YachtInfo and Saturday for the PYA - Make sure you register to attend!

amels ink a new sea axe

princess on top

www.princessyachts.com

Following closely in the wake of Fast Yacht Support (FYS) vessel Garçon’s successful appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show, Amels has announced the sale of another 67-metre SEA AXE, with some interesting custom features....

When Princess Yachts’ Princess V39 was launched last year it received the coveted Motor Boat of the Year title, and the yacht enjoyed another evening filled with praise at the annual IPC Marine Media’s Motor Boat of the Year Awards.

Dutch superyacht builder Amels has sold a Damen-built SEA AXE 6711, a 67-metre Fast Yacht Support vessel, which is due for delivery in spring 2014. It will bear many similarities to Garçon, the SEA AXE 6711 which made an impressive appearance in Monaco last year, although there are some striking differences too.

And now the Princess 40M has reached the coveted finalist list for the 2013 Superyacht Awards. Each May, the superyacht industry’s elite gather for the glamorous World Superyacht Awards, which honour the finest new superyacht builds delivered to their owners in the past twelve months. This year, Princess Yachts will join the prestigious list of finalists with the very first 40 metre yacht built by the British yard – Imperial Princess.

In co-operation with Imperial, a yacht management company which is known by its portfolio of prestigious superyachts built under its supervision, this latest SEA AXE is being constructed with an extensive dive area, designed specifically for scuba diving expeditions. The platform is also being equipped with a LY2 certified helipad, with a maximum take-off load of 5,000kg and a D value (diameter) of 14. This makes the helipad sufficient to accommodate a Eurocopter Dauphin or Agusta Grand. The working deck will be equipped with a crane with a maximum working load of 6.6 tons at a reach of 16.6 metres. Put simply, the crane is strong enough to safely manoeuvre a large tender such as a 12 metre J Craft Torpedo weighing 11 tons.

In an exclusive review Boat International recently commented, “If Imperial Princess is a measure of what Princess is capable of building, there will no doubt be many more owners, enjoying this little ship for exactly what she is – the chance to enjoy cruising in a yacht built to a standard that would put many more expensive yards to shame”.

Managing director Rob Luijendijk commented: “One of the things that owners and captains noted about Garçon at the Monaco Yacht Show was the potential dual-purpose of a vessel like the SEA AXE. They can see the potential as a support ship to a superyacht, particularly the opportunity to win back valuable luxury space on the mothership, because much larger tenders and a greater selection of watertoys can be stowed with ease on the SEA AXE. But some are also excited by the concept of owning a high-performance expedition vessel, and the decision to fit a customised scuba diving centre on this latest SEA AXE 6711 project is an example of how versatile this kind of vessel can be. “We are pleased to be working on delivering this project with our partners at Imperial, with whom we have built up an excellent relationship after many shared superyacht projects. With her superyacht paint finish, Bolidt teak and several luxury areas including the bridge and the Beach Club, the SEA AXE is very much at home in the world of superyachting - even if her primary function is as a high-performance support vessel.” Aside from her striking and purposeful appearance, the AXE BOW is what really sets the SEA AXE apart from others in the world of support vessels. The unique bow and underwater body shape enable the SEA AXE to reach speeds between 18-25 knots in all sea states, making this a fast and dependable support ship - whatever the weather. Amels manages the sales and marketing for the Damen-built SEA AXE range, which includes the 37m, 50m, and 67m models. Amels has been part of the Dutch family-owned Damen Shipyards Group since 1991. The Damen Shipyards Group is the largest shipyard in the Netherlands, consisting of more than 39 shipyards and marine-related companies throughout the world. Damen, a family owned company, employs over 6,000 people, delivered 150 vessels in 2011, and has an annual turnover of approximately €1.3 billion.

straight talk on the dosh

Phil D. Coffers The Islander Economics Correspondent The battle for the digital high street. We all know that the digital revolution is coming, but is it here already?, and where does the tipping point come? when can we say that we are now truly a digital generation. Whenever it is, it certainly took a few steps closer over the Christmas holidays. With the collapse, or imminent collapse of the familiar high street names Comet, Jessops, Blockbuster Video and HMV making the headlines over recent weeks, the same message came loud and clear. ‘We can’t compete with online sales’. While the traditional model of walking into a shop, paying money, and walking out with a product appears increasingly to be yesterdays story. Online retailers, dominated by the big names itunes and Amazon were reporting brisk, record breaking business over the festive spend-a-thon. What is surprising is that few of the big traditional retailers seemed to see this coming, or at least failed to be able to do anything about it. A camera is a camera and a tv is a tv. How many of us value the experience of visiting shop enough to pay extra for the privilege?, not many, and not nearly enough to keep them going. Last Christmas saw not only the continuing decline of the traditional high street, but also the exponential rise of the new one, the one in your pocket. As bricks and mortar retailing closes up and whitewashes its windows, the battle to provide the shop in your pocket hots up. Sales of smartphones and tablet computers are skyrocketing while prices come down. Companies, such as Amazon are willing to sell their latest devices, such as their Kindle Fire tablet at a loss. Why?, well these smart cookies have realised that if you are going to buy a book, rent a movie, buy an album, why would you go shopping anywhere further than the device in your pocket?. It’s all there for you at the swipe of an index finger. As the familiar names on our high streets begin to vanish, the obvious question is who is next?. The venerable Pearson Group, the publishers of the Financial Times and Penguin Books showed their hand recently, buying a substantial stake in the Nook e-reader device in the US, demonstrating that despite an attachment to the printed word since 1844, they realise that the writing is on the wall, so to speak, for their traditional business, and they want to open their next shop in your jacket pocket or handbag. So what is left for our beleaguered and unloved high streets?. In ten years time you maybe sitting in a street full of Starbucks, on their free wifi downloading your newspaper wondering where it all went.

megayachts getting bigger

My Azzam _ www.lurssen.com Photo Credit: Carl Groll / SWNS.com Whatever is happening in the yachting world of mere mortals, who can just about afford to pay their mooring fees after giving up eating out with the wife, and cancelling their health club memberships; The fact is that the big boys are getting into bigger and bigger boats and the builders are keen to keep stretching their capacities for them! If you want evidence you only have to look at the last published list of the world’s 100 largest yachts. There are some familiar names on the list of owners of these giant gin palaces including Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich whose 162.5m (533.15 feet) yacht Eclipse, still clings to the top spot as world’s largest private yacht. However, his reign is likely to end this year. He has held top spot since Eclipse was launched in 2010, eclipsing the royal yacht of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum by just 50cm (20 inches). But now, well into build at German yard Lürssen is Project Azzam, a superyacht that will not just creep into the top spot in 2014, but will utterly dominate the list. It measures 180 metres (590.55ft) This reflects a growing trend according to Boat International, who have been monitoring since they started compiling the world’s most comprehensive database of superyachts way back in the late 1980s. At that time, superyachts were a rarity, but over the last two decades the numbers and the sizes of those yachts have burgeoned. And we are not talking utilitarian work vessels here – superyachts are the epitome of bespoke design, custom fit-out and sumptuous luxury. The previous trend for people to accumulate several large yachts has dwindled though, with just two people owning more than one yacht in the Top 100 list. Music mogul David Geffen recently acquired the 138.4m (454 feet) Rising Sun from Larry Ellison (for which Geffen was said to have paid somewhere in the region of $300 million), thus taking over the number 8 slot in the list, in addition to owning the 114.5 metre (375.6 feet) Pelorus, which currently sits in 20th position. Paul Allens’s fleet now numbers just two Top 100 yachts, with the 126.18 metre (414 feet) Octopus and 92.42 metre (303.2 feet) Tatoosh at 11th and 35th in the list respectively. Larry Ellison himself took delivery of a new yacht at the start of the year, the 87.78 metre (288 feet) Feadship-built Musashi, which ranks at 45th in the list. As big as 2013 is, 2014 will be even bigger. Boat International’s extensive data shows that 12 large yachts being launched in the next year will qualify for their 2014 Top 100 rankings.

changes to rya training will pass more detailed information to you in the November issue of The Islander. Increasing Interactive student fees: Inevitably there will be a small increase in student fees for the courses on RYA Interactive. The increases will come into effect from 1st April. Incidentally it was interesting to receive the news that 81% of students taking the PPR course online complete the training and assessment within 10 hours and that 93% of students were happy with the assessment as a thorough test of their knowledge. We’re pretty sure that the time taken by international students will be much longer than that, and Aigua is working hard to prepare a PPR workshop to assist with some of the complicated English used in the course.

Richard Falk , RYA Training Manager and Chief Examiner The RYA Conference for Yachtmaster Instructors and Sea School Principals was held in Bournemouth on the last weekend of January, so this information is hot off the press. More detailed information will follow in the March issue but for now we can give you a heads-up on some of the items raised: Changes to the motor cruising scheme: from January 2013 there are two new courses slotting into the motor cruising syllabus: Start Motor Cruising and Advanced Pilotage (AP). The advanced course is prepared to be a higher level course designed to take people beyond Day Skipper training and prepare them for more advanced cruising by day and night. The RYA anticipates that this course will provide a valuable alternative for those who consider the Coastal Skipper course too advanced for what they require, or a great stepping stone to progress towards Yachtmaster. In tests, one candidate said “I recently took a Yachtmaster conversion exam and the pilot course just before was very useful.” The training for ‘cold shock’ will now be incorporated into the instruction for man overboard in all practical disciplines. Aigua Sea School has a training DVD on site so just pop in and we can play it for you. The DVD will be included in all our shorebased and practical course training from now on. Commercial endorsements for Powerboat Level 2 and Day Skipper certificates: From April this year, an acceptable First Aid certificate must be included in applications for commercial endorsement. So, to complete your endorsement application, you must present the following course completion certificates: Sea Survival, First Aid and Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) with your MCA approved medical report. SRC course developments: In order to continue to meet the international regulations for Short Range Certificates (achieved through VHF/DSC marine radio training), there will be changes coming into effect from January 2014. The training course will have a minimum teaching time of 10 hours and the training and assessment sections must be separated, i.e. an instructor then an assessor to be involved. The Aigua training team will attend the dedicated SRC conference in October in the UK and

MCA approved ML5 medical certificates: Please be aware that the ML5 certificate has been updated so if you are using this form of medical report please ensure you download from the live MCA site. Old versions of the medical report will not be accepted. RYA courses in a foreign language: At the moment the RYA has no plans to provide RYA training in any language other than English. There is no infrastructure in place for dealing with quality control, complaints and procedures and no supporting course materials. If future plans are to include such training then it must be in association with a national body, for example the cooperation of the RYA with Yachting Australia (however that is still in English!). Astro-Nav: A note to all captains navigating with their iPads … astro-nav is here to stay! In a recent meeting of the IMO, the US Coastguard stood up and voted to keep the training for traditional ocean navigation methods. Now, if the US (this is the nation with the finger on the button as it were) votes to keep it, then we should listen. A written paper on astro-nav will be included in Master 500 exams. Aigua will announce a series of Ocean revision workshops towards the end of February so if you’re interested in an invitation please let us know. Cruising Instructor training: gone are the days when a local school can sign off an instructor to run the start yachting courses of Competent Crew and Day Skipper … thank goodness! The RYA are introducing Cruising Instructor trainer courses, delivered centrally by the RYA to ensure quality control on the new instructors coming into our industry. The trainer course will be a four* day course (five days for sail), delivered by Yachtmaster Instructor Trainers. The new CITs will be qualified to run structured instructor training courses and the courses can be published on the RYA network. Article written by Linda Revill of Aigua Sea School
