The year is drawing to a close and it’s a time to reflect on the last 12 months. Next March The Islander will be 16 years in publication, quite an achievement for a small independent yachting magazine, but 2012 has seen it blossom like never before! We started the year with a new look and a new strap line; ‘Every Yacht is an Island.‘ The implication of course is that everyone on board is an Islander. What do Islanders need most? News, information and a bit of a chuckle now and again. That’s what we deliver, and have been consistently… every month for 184 issues! In April we decided to reach more Islanders, on more Islands (yachts), with more pages… and have been doing so successfully since then, with distribution in Spain, France, Gibraltar, Portugal and more recently in Malta. Next year we will spread to Italy and Sardinia to virtually cover the whole western Mediterranean. In July we went into cooperation with Nautical TV Europe and BYM News to form the X-MMI Group, with its HQ in Palma. Since then we have successfully launched the Captains Lounge.TV concept in collaboration with Portbooker.com. This will feature dynamic yachting industry relevant content, playing on HD screens across a global network of marinas, ports and yachtie bars in 2013. For next year we are proud and excited to have been officially appointed as media partners for the Antibes Yacht Show taking place from 18th to 21st April. And we are also partners in the Palma International Yachting Forum, which runs alongside the boat show in Mallorca from 1st to 3rd May. (See more on page 31). Having just returned from METS in Amsterdam I am totally convinced that there is a bright future for yachting and water sports, now that the recession has levelled out. Its never going to be ‘like the old days’ again, we have to get used to a new economic norm without easy credit and boom cycles, but maybe we are all better off that way in the long term? One final important word about our content; I don’t think any magazine - large, small or covering any subject, can have a better band of editorial contributors than we have. Some are new to us this year, and some have been around since god was a boy (No name checks needed!) But the variety, quality and commitment they bring to The Islander is superb, and I thank them all most sincerely for their support.

IPM GROUP CHARITY

SKIPPER VERSUS CREW In our September issue we reviewed a book entitled: Skipper Vs Crew – Crew Vs Skipper. By Tim Davison. With cartoons by Mike Peyton. The book is a humorous observation on the different agendas that the two groups may follow, and seen from both sides of the coin.

The IPM Group has initiated a campaign for the collection of food items, clothing and toys in its facilities of Marina Port de Mallorca, Marina Palma Cuarentena and STP Shipyard. This initiative is part of “Operacion Kilo” organized by the Rotary Clubs of Mallorca with the aim of helping the most needy. The campaign begins November 19th and ends December 20th. All donations will be collected in the receptions of each of the above mentioned facilities and they will be delivered to the Asociación Zaqueo, La Asociación Antiguos Alumnos de Montesión Solidarios and the Fundación Dexailles The teams of Marina Port de Mallorca, Marina Palma Cuarentena and STP Shipyard have put the necessary boxes for the deposit of donations at the disposal of anyone who wants to help. These boxes will be located in the receptions for each facility and items requested are non-perishable food, hygiene materials, cleaning equipment, clothes and well preserved toys. IPM Group through its companies is actively involved in various social and environmental awareness programmes and this initiative is one of the social activities planned throughout the year. If transport is needed please call us at the Islander on 971 100 601, and we will be happy to pick up anywhere in Palma or S.W Mallorca.

We invited some readers to send in their own stories and promised to keep their names secret. So here are the winners who will each receive a copy of the book with our compliments. The only thing we can say is that they are all from skippers. We’ll let you fathom out what that tells us about crew? Maybe its just that they don’t trust us to keep their names secret as much as the skippers do? Or maybe its because the skippers don’t have to worry about it so much, even if we do publish their names! From the skippers perspective: Captain 1: On leaving an anchorage I experienced some problems with the stabilisers. I tried calling the engineer who was in the engine room doing checks but was unable to get his attention. As the guests were very sensitive to any movement, I sent the deckhand to get him. The camera had been focused on the control room and I noticed the deckhand arrive. He firstly opened the door but not used of the noise of the vessel underway backed out again and closed the door. I then had to watch him for several minutes whilst he knocked politely on the engine room door wondering why nobody was answering! Captain 2: We were taking my precious new shiny yacht through the Canal du Midi from the Atlantic to the Med with a rotating crew of press-ganged friends. The lock walls are nasty rough concrete and there are crosscurrents at the entrance. We had spent a fortune on extra fenders. Just as we entered one lock a crewmember grabbed a fender a lifted it out from the rapidly narrowing gap between our yacht and concrete lock wall. What are you doing we all screamed - “it was going to to get squashed” was his reply! Captain 3: Years ago, on an Atlantic crossing on a Swan 65, skipper sends ‘fairly new to the yachting scene’ crew forward to check the sails. Shortly afterwards gets answered with: “Yes captain, they are still all there!”

GIBRALTAR, HOME FROM HOME For ocean adventurer Alan Priddy, Gibraltar is one of those places which keeps calling him back. That might come as a surprise, given that he hails from Portsmouth, a city long steeped in maritime tradition. And while a few years back he emulated his childhood hero Sir Alec Rose, sailing the same classic yacht Lively Lady around the world from Portsmouth, it’s his yearning to make the fastest powerboat circumnavigation of the world that brings him to Gibraltar. “First and foremost, it’s a matter of practicality,” admits Priddy. “The international governing body of powerboating rules stipulate that a world circumnavigation must pass through the Suez and Panama canals. By default that means you also have to pass through the Strait of Gibraltar. The first powerboat record of just under 75 days set in 1998 by Cable & Wireless Adventurer started and finished here, and we were keen to take on the big boys on the same terms. But more to the point is the fact that Gibraltar is British, and not only are the people here really friendly, but they’re genuinely interested in what we’re trying to do.”

Just over 10 years ago, Priddy’s first attempt at circumnavigating the world by powerboat saw a couple of visits to the Rock. At the time, the Rigid Inflatable Boat Spirit of Cardiff was the largest RIB in the world, even though it was just 10 metres long. Before attempting the circumnavigation in 2002, the plan was to nibble away at some of Cable & Wireless Adventurer’s port-to-port records, simply to show the worth of his boat. The fastest of the Adventurer’s legs around the world was (conveniently, perhaps), the first one, from Gibraltar to Monaco. And so in October 2000, three months after setting the first ever powerboat record for circumnavigating the British Isles, Spirit of Cardiff set off from Gibraltar to Monaco. 2002 saw Spirit of Cardiff arrive in Gibraltar at the beginning of April to prepare for the round the world record attempt. The boat was in port for several days, not least because both windscreens needed replacing after being smashed in horrific sea conditions on the journey from Cardiff. But it also allowed time for the crew to tour the Rock, as well as attend a reception in the City Hall, generously hosted by then Mayor of Gibraltar Judge John Alcantara. Gibraltar Tourism also jetted a number of journalists out from the UK to cover the boat’s departure as she set off on what would turn out to be a voyage of epic proportions. Sadly, after a valiant attempt which saw Priddy and his crew battling horrendous weather conditions, mechanical problems, illness, injury, pirate attacks and mindless bureaucracy, the voyage came to a dramatic end just days away from Continued on page 8

GIBRALTAR, HOME FROM HOME Continued from page 6. Gibraltar, when one of his crew suffered a heart attack.

Olá Amigos, The festive season is upon us with the scent of roasting chestnuts pervading the streets of the Algarve. There’s still a lot of sailing going on though! On the 22nd and 23rd of December for example, there is a sailing challenge in Marina de Lagos hosted by the Marina de Lagos Sailing Academy. Also, Portimão Sun Sailing Team Academy is now beginning with the SM40 Team Coaching courses, for companies worldwide. In this three day course, participants learn how to develop an energetic team thinking/planning environment in which innovative solutions become a consistent pattern. Leaders learn how to transform a group of individuals into achievement-oriented high performance teams. This training programs consists in indoor and outdoor sessions aboard the SM40 boats in a more attractive and relaxed environment. I have very good news for super yachts thinking of visiting the Algarve! AYSS Associate Members, Bluewater Algarve, have recently launched a full Yacht Agency Service. This is wonderful for visiting superyachts who are used to a high standard of assistance. Services include booking berths, customs/immigration, travel arrangements, repairs/ refits, bunkering and admin services. If you would like to know more about these services, shoot me an email and I’ll fill you in. In the office: The directors have just returned from Amsterdam... hey hey now, they were at METS being very busy and important, not misbehaving at all! Lots of meetings, business relationships cemented for another year and looking forward to the year ahead. Although the general sentiment around the exhibition was quite subdued, the notable exception was the super yacht pavilion which was busy and had a good positive buzz. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a fabulous festive season from all of us here in the Algarve.

Até a próxima! Emma

Eleven years on, Priddy is ready to have another crack at the record – now down to 61 days – in a new and much bigger boat, and this time he’s determined to make sure that having set off from Gibraltar, he will actually make it back! As if he didn’t have impetus enough, he’s also been challenged to a race by an American team out to grab the same record. Joining him in the crew will be journalist and TV cameraman Clive Tully, who accompanied Priddy on all the Spirit of Cardiff trips, including around the world, and consultant psychiatrist Jan Falkowski, a veteran of many boating exploits with Priddy, with three transatlantics under his belt. Gibraltar is not just the point from which Accomplish More will set off – it will be the boat’s home port, and base of operations for the support team, including a fully-equipped media room which will be open for the duration of the voyage. Providing all of this is the newly opened Ocean Village Gibraltar, a luxury marina and resort complex. The Gibraltar government is firmly behind Accomplish More, too – clearly the Rock will see significant benefits in the media coverage which will come not just from Accomplish More’s departure on November 2nd 2013 and hopefully triumphal arrival less than 50 days later, but the American boat’s refuelling stop (they’ll be starting at the same time, but from Puerto Rico). There’s no doubt that once Accomplish More arrives in Gibraltar in early summer 2013 she’ll be turning heads. With her hull painted a mirror-finish bright red, and a 3ft diameter white inflatable tube down each side, she’s going to look distinctly patriotic. The current record-holder is a New Zealand boat whose starting point was a port in Spain. But with Accomplish More in her home port of Gibraltar, there are no truer words than the project’s strapline “British – from start to finish!” The Islander’s X-MMI Group will be a media partner of Accomplish More, and will be in Gib to film the start of the race. Also our sister company Sea-Things is supplying waterproof floating dry bags to the whole crew for their hand held communication devices. www.circumnavigationrecord.com

TAX & LEGAL MATTERS Moving to the Canary Islands. Special Ship Registry? No Mat Tax there? The recording of ships and vessels in the Canary Islands Special Ship´s Registry has a principal goal, which is to promote, develop and extend the economic shipping activity in the Islands. Therefore the Canary Government has implemented some measures to attract companies and entrepreneurs to record their yachts in the Canary Registry. For such recording the following requirements must be matched: - The companies must have their effective center of economic activities and the effective control of the vessel in the Canary Islands, or in case of having it outside they must have a branch or permanent establishment in the Canaries. - A legal representative is enough. - The companies must be the legal owners of the vesselsto be recorded or have at least must have a valid lease, rental or charter agreement which gives them the right of managing the vessel from the nautical and legal perspective - The vessels must be over 100 GT ( ships more than 24 m LOA excluded fisheries) and must be dedicated to international navigation. And if they were previously recorded in other Ship´s registry they must show evidence that they fulfill all the national and international Safe & Manning regulations. - The crew must have at least one skipper and first officer of Spanish nationality and duly recorded in the Spanish Sea Social Security; the rest of the crew must be at least 50% EU citizens. The most important tax and social security savings are briefly summarised here: - No Transfer Tax applicable to the contracts and acts related to the vessel. - Income Tax: 50% income tax relief for the earnings of the crew - 90% Corporate Tax relief - 90% exemption in the crew social contributions - Matriculation Tax exemption according to art. 77bis from the Canary Islands Economic and Fiscal Regime Act (Ley 19/1994 de 6 de julio de modificación del Régimen Económico y Fiscal de Canarias. Although we must say that the Balearic Custom & Excise Office do not always respect said exemption and tries to assess the Mat Tax. As far as we know there are several cases at the Regional Financial Court and until we have a definitive answer in a Court resolution we cannot say completely, that there is no tax exposure... although the Law is clear enough! In order to recommend the appropriate structure there are other important aspects to observe like the VAT /IGIC. Canary Islands is a no VAT territory and has its own IGIC similar taxation. The fiscal look through, the flag of the vessel and tax domicile for tax purposes of the owner, and the final use of the vessel must be taken into account. Also is it a real real bona fide charter or just own use? These are all elements to be examined before deciding to use the Canary Islands Special Ship´s Registry. INCIDENCES SAILS COME TO PALMA A global leader in sail making with a 12.5 million euro turnover has taken over the Eurosails manufacturing facility in Alaro Mallorca, which will now be known as Incidences Sails Super Yacht Palma. Incidences Sails is already present in 5 sites in Europe and has a network of 13 sail lofts and dealers around the world. A new strategy Primarily known in the world of offshore racing (Energy Team, Maxi Banque Populaire V) and yards, Incidences Sails is directed by Yannick Richomme, who became CEO less than a year ago. His primary objective is to internationalize and diversify the skills of the company, especially in order to accommodate the demanding super yacht market. Yannick explained; “Over the past year, we have recruited several foreign agents to follow the international development strategy. To comprehensively service the super yacht market, we must be able to provide a platform of services geographically attractive to owners and captains. Palma is clearly “the place to be”. Incidences Sails is, however, already present in the world of Super Yachts, equipping performance racing boats (Mari Cha IV, Moonbeam), and cruisers, such as Drumbeat or Atmosphere, a 174 feet cruise ship from the Perini Navi shipyards. “Incidences wishes to capitalize on its presence in races frequented by these luxurious yachts, such as the Voiles de St Tropez or the Giraglia Rolex Cup” according to Richomme. Ideally situated Incidences Sails Super Yacht Palma has ten employees working in its 1600m² loft. Patrick Wetter, former owner of the loft, explains the advantages of this acquisition; “Incidences Sails has just taken over an excellent facility with a highly skilled workforce who is very familiar with the super yacht market. The floor was custom built for this niche and Incidences Sails acknowledged that Palma is an established platform to service these demanding customers. Antoine Thuillier, who will now be responsible of the loft, has been working with me for the past two years as a business partner. He earned an excellent reputation on the island, is well respected and will do a first class job.” Looking forward Incidences Sails Super Yachts Palma is currently working on the new sails of the Swan 66 ‘Tic Toc’ and eager to deliver them before the end of November. “The boat has chosen Incidences Sails as sail manufacturer to meet the requirements of her program: a departure around Christmas for a cruise around the world and a long road to Ushuaia and the south pole. Incidences sails are known for their longevity, both in terms of fabric and finishing. We have been working with the ship’s owner to develop a custom product and meet their expectations” explains Antoine. “We are also in contact with several yachts of

over 100 feet, we service sails and develop proposals of technical solutions for new sails. We compete with major brands already installed for long in Mallorca on running Hi-Tech projects as on gigantic cruising yachts (Dubois 150 feet). The local market of regatta boat (28-45 feet) is also curious about Incidences brand. We are on the various regattas organized by the Andraxt Club and the Real Club Nautico de Palma to present our brand and products. We sail with the owners to provide them with technical support throughout the season and create a relationship of trust.” A presence in major sailing events From September 29 to October 7, the Voiles de Saint-Tropez gathered the largest yachts Classic, Modern or Wally for a week of regatta. There were nearly thirty boats equipped with Incidences Sails such as Moombeam 3 and 4, Lelantina or Thendara in the classic Class, who had a wonderful time on the different races held in the Bay of Saint-Tropez. In the Wally Class, 8 races were run during which the yacht GENIE, led by Prince Charles de Bourbon-Siciles, was fully in control of the situation. Equipped with Incidences sails for the past 2 years after the new mast installation; the 77 feet yacht signs here her prettiest performance. “We have been working very closely with Incidences for the past two years” says Nicolas Marchand, manager of GENIE. “We made a real substantive work, with Bertrand Cudennec and Ronan Floch, and they focused on research and development to achieve this result today. This is the outcome of a great team work which will be carried on in the long term. “ For over twenty years, Incidences Sails has been the favorite offshore skippers’ sails provider. This can be easily seen through the 5 wins out of 6 previous editions of the Vendée Globe. With Titouan Lamazou (1990 with Voile système), Christophe Auguin (1996), Vincent Riou (2004) and of course Michel Desjoyeaux (2000 – 2008), the sail maker has a wonderful record on this legendary round-the-world single-handed and unassisted race around the world. Seven Imoca 60’ equipped by Incidences Sails were on the starting on November 10 from Les Sables d’Olonne. Constrained by the Imoca rules, skippers still have some leeway concerning the 10 sails that can be embedded; manufacturer, fabric or type of sails, the differences vary and obviously affect performance. The above mentioned acquisition means that Incidences Sails Super Yacht Palma S.L. now offers sail making, repairs and special sail making projects as well as any works you may require in covers and upholstery. The latter will continue being taken care of by the Undercover department. (+34) 971 518 520 / 971 879 222 palma@incidences-sails.com www.incidences-sails.com

14 transform “from one-dimensional utility into sophisticated electronic devices.”

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE The Demise of the PC is Clear - the Future is GLASS! We know the digital world is evolving rapidly, and it is likely to become the greatest single impact that we’ve ever experienced on the way we live and work. Its impact will be profound: the ability to unlock vast global markets and deliver innovative services faster and cheaper while creating entirely new business models with opportunities that offer enormous potential for those with the vision, creativity and energy to exploit them. After Microsoft, Apple and Google, we can only wonder at the opportunities that a full-blown digital economy can offer. The problem is that the inverse is also true. Contraction and bankruptcy are often the fate of incumbents who fail to spot changes and do something about it quickly enough. Spotting the writing on the wall is the challenge before their market disappears. Take Kodak for example, or Nokia, and now even HP, the world’s largest manufacturer of the PC. When you look at those names, it’s a rapid change in the world order isn’t it? However let’s take a look at the exciting stuff first. Corning’s “A Day Made of Glass” If you haven’t seen these YouTube videos yet, you should do so now before moving on. They’re made by Corning, a glass manufacturer with true vision. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cf7IL_eZ38 I must thank Steph in our office for passing this link on as it has fired my imagination, and last week at METS Amsterdam, I spent many hours trying to hunt down any new products using intelligent glass. Unfortunately, there was very little on offer. If you can’t watch the video right now, let me explain that it is set in the not-too-distant future, and begins with a couple waking up to a new day…. Can you imagine organising your daily schedule with a few touches on your bathroom mirror? Or chatting with far-away relatives through interactive video on your kitchen counter? Or reading a classic novel on a whisper-thin piece of flexible glass? Corning is not only imagining those scenarios – the company is engaged in research that could bring them alive quite soon. Wendell Weeks, Chairman and CEO of Corning, says that Corning’s vision for the future includes a world in which myriad ordinary surfaces

The video depicts a world in which interactive glass surfaces help you stay connected through seamless delivery of real-time information – whether you’re working, shopping, eating, or relaxing. “While we’re not saying that it will develop exactly as we’ve envisioned,” Wendell says, “we do know that this world is being created as we speak.” Glass is the essential enabling material of this new world. “This is a visual world – so transparency is a must,” explains Wendell. But that’s just the beginning. Ubiquitous displays require materials that are flexible, durable, stable under the toughest of environmental conditions, and have a cool, touch-friendly aesthetic. And not just any glass will do. This world requires materials that are strong, yet thin and lightweight; that can enable complex electronic circuits and nano-functionality; that can scale for very large applications, and that are also environmentally friendly. Such real-time information also depends on communications networks with massive bandwidth. This is another opportunity for a glass company such as Corning to provide optical, high bandwidth delivery pipes. It also shows what can be done with increased bandwidth, which is now becoming available not only with fixed fibre connections but also 4G LTE. So what do you think to this window on the not too distant future? You and I as the consumer are driving the trend, thus the vision for tomorrow is very clear. We all want to be connected with what we want…when we want…anywhere…and with great ease. This matches e3’s vision for the future. Google’s Project Glass Coincidentally, Google has also been working on a project called Project Glass. As consumer hardware goes, few items have had such an instantly polarizing effect. They are concept smart glasses or, to be more precise, augmented reality head-mounted display. To call them glasses is an understatement, though the company’s description isn’t much help either: “technology that frees you to explore and share your world while keeping you in the moment.” Clear as mud? To the uninitiated, think of them as a small computer with a mini screen on a springy headband that sits above your eye. In mid September at New York Fashion Week, legendary designer Diane Von Fürstenburg put them on the catwalk. “Fashion went four-eyed, as Google sent its high-tech glasses down the runway at the Diane Von Furstenberg show at New York Fashion Week. Models at the DVF show strutted down the runway in the tech company’s futuristic frames as they displayed the designer’s couture. Google founder Sergey Brin then joined Von Furstenberg on the catwalk at the end of the show, walking the runway with the iconic designer and DVF creative director Yvan Mispelaere as they

15 each showed off a pair of the glasses.” There’s still a very big split between those who instantly shout in horror and crow about security risks, and those who envisage a new dawn in computing. Perhaps they both have a point. For some, these will be the ultimate intrusion, yet for others they could revolutionise business or the way we interact with the world. The truth is, we just don’t know yet. In my previous life as a young electronics engineer and designer, I was working on the side-lines of an “in-eye head up display” for aircraft, where the pilot had a display in front of his eye showing all the aircraft information, so he only missed something if he blinked! It has taken Google about 35 years to come up with a redevelopment of an old idea, but technology has moved on apace as the models on the catwalk in New York didn’t require a helmet stuffed full of electronics to make it work! The twilight years of the PC? Yes, I think we’re nearly there. Sales are falling for conventional PCs and laptops, as they are replaced by Smartphones and Tablets. Three of the biggest manufacturers in the world are changing their business models to adapt. IBM has already done it successfully some years ago, but HP and Dell need to get on with it. HP which was the world’s largest personal computer maker, and which employs more than 300,000 people globally, is undergoing a restructuring aimed at focusing the sprawling company on enterprise services, in the mold of International Business Machines Corp (IBM) who saw the writing on the wall some years back. On November 20th 2012, HP said that personal computer sales shrank again and its quarterly revenue fell 6.7 percent. HP’s stock dropped 6.6 percent in premarket trading. Revenue from all of its main business units fell, with the personal computer division recording the steepest drop at 14 percent. On November 15th Dell’s quarterly results struggled to find form, and, as was expected, sales were light. Dell’s biggest challenge is that it has been seeking to de-emphasise its older PC-centric business and pivot toward higher-margin enterprise services, hardware and software. Even so, about half its business is still tied to PCs, both in the consumer and business segments.

Considering current Euro 3G tariffs are about €90 for 5-10Gb at real speeds of 500k, you might think I was pulling a fast one. When Doctor the clocks at went Sea back At the end of October we all remembered to put our clocks back by one hour and if we did not remember then we soon found out the following morning when we were an hour early for whatever we had planned. I think I have managed that comedy twice in my life so far. The whole idea of moving the clocks to and fro is rooted in attempts to arrange the daylight hours to maximise efficiency in agriculture but there are regular arguments about the benefits especially when very northerly (and very southerly) latitudes have very short days in winter regardless of the artificial manipulation of dawn. On a gloomy winter day in northern Europe the grey misty half light starts in mid morning and ends in mid afternoon and the rest of the time it is very dark.

At the risk of over-simplification, this seasonal depression – sleep more and eat more (craving for carbohydrates) - is somewhat different from “ordinary” non-seasonal depression – sleep less and eat less – but happily both forms are amenable to treatment. Pity the folk who live further north in this part of the world. Stockholm enjoys a mere five hours of daylight on many winter days and there is a commercially viable demand for “light cafes” which make a special effort to enhance the illumination of the surroundings with bright non-UV light to help the clientele feel better. A dawn-simulating alarm clock may also help, with the light growing in intensity for an hour or so before the sound of the alarm is heard. Another subtle problem is the impact on vitamin D metabolism. Vitamin D is important in the health of our bones and an absence of vitamin D has a knock-on effect on calcium metabolism and bone health. Happily we can get some vitamin D from our normal diet but this is needs boosting by the effect of sunlight on a vitamin D precursor in the skin. The action of sunlight converts this into a vitamin D form which feeds into the body’s overall production of vitamin D and helps to prevent bone thinning and also muscle fatigue. In parts of the world where the diet is poor and/or the sunlight is thin and short-lived, the vitamin D levels will fall and calcium absorption is reduced and this makes the bones thin and weak – this affects the long bones in particular and generates the traditional but haunting picture of rickets when it affects children.

The absence of light can make people depressed – so-called seasonal affective disorder or, appropriately, SAD. The uplifting effect of bright sunny weather is not just a psychological figment of the imagination but has some rationale in brain hormonal activity. Darker conditions lead both to more melatonin (increased sleepiness, and increased appetite for the “wrong” foods) and also less serotonin (lowered mood and motivation). SAD is not common around the equator!

Many developed countries ensure that vitamin D is added to foodstuffs such as milk, margarine and cereals – eggs and oily fish are good food sources as well. The UK health service recommendation is 10-15 minutes of natural sun on the hands and face a few times a week. It is normally not necessary to take vitamin D supplements because a reasonable diet, especially in a sunny environment, should provide sufficient nutrition. Overdoing vitamin D intake can lead to excessive calcium absorption and further problems.

When the days are dark and gloomy, there is an effect on energy levels and sociability and the milder episodes are called “winter blues” but more severe symptoms can develop during December through to February and be bad enough to need professional help. This can take the form of CBT, cognitive behavioural therapy, or antidepressant medication. CBT is a proven method of counselling to help individuals to looks on thoughts and reactions more rationally. Antidepressants, if needed, will have a beneficial effect on the brain chemicals which enhance mood and re-energise a sad psyche.

We are very fortunate in the Mediterranean latitudes to have less extreme daytime variation over the year and we also get more than our fair share of sunshine so all these issues are less significant here but spare a thought for the winters up north, or deep south. It isn’t surprising that many ancient northern civilisations had a mid-winter celebration to brighten up the season as the axis turns and the days start to lengthen. Better still to celebrate it as Christmas which reminds us of the first coming of the Light of the world in the humble stable in Bethlehem – light in our darkness - happy Christmas everyone!

BLAUNAVAL NEW DIVISION LOOKING FOR A CHRISTMAS PRESENT? Christmas is looming and whether you believe in New Years resolutions or not it’s the beginning of a New Year and most of us are conscious about making a new start. Did you ever think carefully about what you most want to achieve with your body? What ever it is, it can be done with careful planning and execution. Maybe you want to tone up? Lose some weight, lose some fat? Get fit or fitter or just start being a bit healthier? With the right training and nutrition there is no reason why you cannot get exactly what you want this Christmas! Maybe it’s not for you, maybe it’s a gift for your partner, friend, parent or siblinghow about your work force? Someone on the boat.... how stressed out is the skipper? How much are the stewardesses always complaining about putting on weight? Find out about my special Christmas packages and give someone the best possible gift this holiday- the gift of health. Preparing your waistline for the festivities. Top tips for avoiding the Christmas bulge: 1. Allow for set binges. Try to keep on track 80% of the time, the “what the heck” approach may seem okay at the time but remember how hard you have to work to get rid of all that excess weight afterwards. Limit yourself to some binge meals and the rest of the time eat healthily. 2. Eat protein before you drink (alcohol) This is the golden rule for each time you eat- 2 bites of protein before eating any other food at every meal time. 3. Drink plenty of water before you start drinking and indulging. 4. Leave plenty of time following eating and going to bed. Try to avoid going to bed with a full stomach you won t sleep very well, you’ll wake up tired and you’ll end up wearing the meal. 5. Take a stroll after eating. Light muscle contractions following food help to prevent the body storing the food as fat. 6. Try not to consistently graze and drink. You really will pile on the pounds. Instead stick to set timesbreakfast, lunch and dinner and drink at these times. 7. Schedule your workouts and get them done in the morning before other party invites get in the way. 8. Don’t make the mistake of feast and then famine cycles- pigging out one day then starving yourself the next, this will wreak havoc on your metabolism and will leave you moody and tired. Be sensible, if you fall off the band wagon, the next day resume your healthy eating habits- try to get some intensive exercise sessions in. 9. Book yourself some personal training sessions prior and post Christmas to make a plan to stay on track. Katie Handyside: (+34) 636 322 959 Info@katiehandyside.com _ www.katiehandyside.com

Palma based Blaunaval have announced a new Oil & Fuel care division with a special technical consultancy and dedicated stock products for diesel fuel & oil preventative maintenance. The concept is supported by the company’s extensive knowledge on fuel and oil contamination, using proven solutions that they have been testing and proving over the last 3 years with marine hi-speed diesel engines. (MTU, CAT) and gas turbines (Pratt&Whitney, GE) * Fuel & Oil Analysis: Studying the correct parameters on each case needed. It is very important that you analyze to the correct parameters (not less or more than needed) sized for your application and system. Blaunaval are specialists on preventative oil maintenance. * Grotamar-71 (MTU & MAN approved): Best tested bacteria biocide . Blaunaval have a full stock of 0.5 and 10 liter cans together with technical assistance support for its correct use. Company Director Mateo Nadal said; “We have just found so many superyachts containing high level of bacteria, either for wrong dosages or because their diesel tank bottoms have never have been tested in the past. We do test reports for every single tank, this will avoid thick sludge growing on tank bottoms in future.” * Fuel Purifier: New purifier X-filtration to comply with MTU diesel filtration specifications: Blaunaval upgrades and optimizes existing centrifuge filtration systems or designs new systems to offer “super” diesel fuel micron-filtration quality. This is all done under the new maximum particle concentration spec required in fuel for modern engines (Please note that 80% of injection system failures are due this problem). Mateo says; “We study every case and recommend all the solutions needed on the existing on-board installation.” * Hydraulic oil systems: To keep your hydraulic oil always below the maximum micron particle concentration and at the same time continuously removing humidity to keep the oil totally water free! Mateo stresses; “This is a very important issue to keep running your expensive hydraulics systems, to avoid breakdowns or high maintenance costs. Contamination cases are always solved and proved by test reports all around the involved process. Please check with us first before you spend high costs on flushings and oil changes! The oil could still be perfect and have the correct chemical properties, it’s often just dirty and contaminated.” (+34) 971 703 686 (+34) 667 544 057 info@blaunaval.com www.blaunaval.com

GALLEY GODDESS So good people, we go into December, the silly season and importantly (for me), the eating season that wonderful excuse to say to yourself ´go on, it´s Xmas` and have yourself blushingly reply ....... ´well......... okay then, it is Xmas`. Xmas is that wonderful excuse to gorge ourselves, indulge ourselves and justify all these excesses. Yes! love this time of the year where good food, parties and spending time with family and friends are a priority. But, to be honest, I really hate turkey - well, Xmas turkey. The only merit the fat old turkey can boast is that you can feed all those family and hangers on that materialise for Xmas lunch. They arrive hungry, maybe a bit pissed, clutching their cheap bottle of plonk - that you can be sure will be lurking in the back of your fridge the next day whilst all your posh vino you have lovingly stashed for this special day (well, it is Xmas) will disappear before you can say Merry Bloody Xmas. Duns Butcher down in Portals is selling Goose breasts, so here is an idea for Xmas lunch, Get 4 skinless goose breasts, using a sharp knife butterfly each breast leaving a ¨hinge¨ at the end so you will have one long fillet. Using a piece of cling cover the breast and gently wacky with a small mallet or saucepan until 1/4 inch thick. Rub with olive oil and season. Sauté half a red pepper, 1/4 onion and 2 garlic cloves for a bit, then toss in a bowl with 2 tablespoons fresh sage, 1 cup of homemade breadcrumbs (or stuffing), half a cup of chicken broth and parmesan and a dash of Tabasco. Slap it all around and leave to cool. Place an equal amount of stuffing mixture inside each one, whilst holding in the corners, roll each fillet like a burrito. Lay out some serano ham and wrap each goose fillet in it. Lightly fry in a pan and then pop into the oven (180C) - 10 minutes for medium rare, longer if you want. Remember to rest five minutes before serving. Slice into two or three medallions, arrange around a steamy mound of garlic mash and vege, sit back and flick your hair,Galley Goddess style and prepare yourself for lavish compliments. The beauty of this recipe is firstly, you can prepare everything beforehand thus ensuring your hold on the vino bottle, control of the conversation and fight..

Merry Xmas

MASTER BATES

22 Here we go, back on the Palma Boat Show merry-goround, after a brief respite when the 29th annual event was cancelled earlier this year due to lack of support, enthusiasm and money. Now, the 30th Salon Nautica de Palma has been officially announced for May 1st to 5th 2013. But hang on a second...there never was a 29th one was there? So are boat shows like leap years or Februarys? Or, can we just skip one now and again and simply pretend it happened? I wonder what the IFBSO (International Federation of Boat Show Organisers) would have to say about that? That’s if the Palma Show ever actually belonged to it, and was properly audited on such things! Maybe somebody in authority doesn’t like the number 29? There is a biblical significance to the number that could explain it. The meaning of 29 can be derived by examining the meaning of twenty and nine. In the Bible the number 20 signifies Expectation that is the hope for the divine completion. The number 9 signifies Judgment in relation to the Nine People Stoned. Mmm, expectations of judgement.... about a dismal half empty boat show? Now that could be worth leaping a year for, and moving on swiftly to number 30. Lets hope its all worth it? Continuing on the nautical fair theme, how about the way The Palma Boat Show was announced just recently in the local press with the bold headline: Nautical sector is “key to recovery”. Oh, really, well that’s ground breaking news for Spain’s poor beleaguered economy isn’t it? What has just about every nautical association and yachting professional been shouting from the rooftops for the past upmteen years? Why has 600 million euros escaped Spain’s economy and gone to France and Italy with big yachts every year? Why does Spain have 8000 miles of coastline, hundreds of marinas, idyllic islands and anchorages... and not enough boat builders to count on one hand? Kin hell....They still just don’t get it do they? Ello, ello here comes Lourdes Cardona, (regional secretary for the Promotion of Business & Employment) who says; ”The government’s policy, is to reinforce all possibilities which promote the Balearics as a number one spot for nautical tourism.” I’m sorry Senora but meaningless rhetoric like that, then skipping a boat show, and inventing a new number for the next one won’t make a jot of difference, if the fiscal/ taxation conditions remain totally prohibitive. If the port authority doesn’t take responsibility for its part in the the nautical tourism marketing mix. If the marinas and ports don’t study the overseas competition and make themselves a real alternative in terms of value for money. Yes it is good to hear that the private sector is more involved, but you have to listen to them and act more quickly on what they say as well! The start of the 2013 boating season is only 16 weeks away now, and they have just announced the Palma Boat Show after procrastinating about it for far too long! The letter from Brussels to Madrid stating that mat tax on charter yachts is unfairly applied, has still not been replied to after a year! Next summer’s charter cruises are already being discussed and agreed. A potential charter pool of over 800 large yachts are planning ‘not to plan’ for the Balearics in 2013! Need I go on, cos I really can if you want me to!!! Action not words is what is needed to make the Balearics ‘a number one spot for nautical tourism.’ So far, we still see too much of the latter, and

very little of the former... I rest my case. As loyal readers will know I’m not one to celebrate the ‘season of goodwill’ very enthusiastically, in fact I would rather it just didn’t happen at all.. Bah,humbug! But I do dig into my sack of old jokes at the end of the year, so here are a few to share over the turkey: - Some bastard’s just pinched a pair of my wife’s knickers off the washing line. She’s not bothered about the knickers but she wants the 12 clothes pegs back. - Our local gym has got a new machine in. I only used it for half an hour, as I started to feel sick. It’s great though. It does everything - KitKats, Mars Bars, Snickers, Potato Crisps, the lot. - The cost of living has now got so high that my wife is having sex with me because she can’t afford batteries. - If you’re anywhere near a computer or tablet thingy, and you have not seen the Irish Olympic Sailing commentary video...do invite some friends, have a few vinos and log onto this: http://www.thatvideosite.com/v/5852 I promise you’ll crack up! I can’t let many issues go by without my customary dig at the infamous Irish airline, we all love to hate. You know, the one that likes to lower prices whilst raising blood pressures, and inducing the new physiological stress condition called RyanRage! Indeed, their passengers reach the point where they believe they’d be better off wrapped up in brown paper and surrendered to DHL, where they would doubtless be treated with somewhat more civility whilst travelling as a parcel! And then, after two hours of being bombarded with offers of smokeless cigarettes, scratch cards, train tickets to cities far away from their remote landing spots, and tasteless nosh that costs more than the flight...Isn’t it just the last straw, when that bloody trumpet blasts out and an unintelligible Gaelic voice tells you that; “an udder Royan Ayre flysch has lionded on toyme.” Pleeez Mr O’Leary’ give us a break, we all know you add time to your flight schedules so that you can still be ‘on time’, even when you’re late! But now its winter, and its pay back time you sneaky old paddy fox. Oh yes, we’ll all fit our carry-on bags into your stupid little gauge frame if your arrogant surly RyanTarts insist. But we’ve got extra stowage capacity now for all those other little bits and bobs. Hence, as seen below.... the RyanArse traveller!

24 Not wishing to be of proverbial “bah humbug” spirit like himself propped up over in yon corner counting how many chocolates are left in the office tuck tin I nevertheless thought, especially with the festive season upon us, it prudent you hear this. Someone had money repaid to them through a well known money payment system. Apart from deciphering how the system worked there were no problems, money repaid, job done; then about six weeks later an email came through about an over payment….. “so could you confirm your bank details and we will collect the money” need I say more…. Other than “look out, look out there’s some thieving scammers about”. I was amazed at how many “top ten tips” there are for a myriad of topics. Forget about common sense…snort. For whiter looking teeth, wear coral or red lipstick….I can just hear Gavin asking Stacey for hers! How about… avoid dark coloured foods after teeth whitening treatment……. What are you going to do run down the street shouting mines half a pound of liquorice allsorts! Floss every day - it doesn’t lighten your teeth but apparently floss makes them look whiter by removing the particles between them… oh gross… you can just see the bits of broccoli….. let’s hope you’ve got a good friend. Swiftly moving on “Christmas time mistletoe and wine” and pressies….. together with some more hot tips….on lingerie…. that’s underwear to you Bates…and I said tips! It seems when men come to buy undies for their other halves they could possibly be thinking more of themselves with 1 in 5 woman admitting they’ve never worn their partners gift…….so are men really pants (snort) at this? Apparently so with leather, pvc, edible undies and fishnets figuring quite highly on their hit lists. So boys some tips just for you: Know her size……this does not mean walk around with your mitts out. Have some taste…..you might be partial to a fan of red suspenders, think on; the only gift you could be giving her is a red face and above all make it special….. remember most women would love to receive beautiful underwear they wouldn’t necessarily buy themselves……now you could be on a winner! And carrying on the Christmas theme…..The Mistletoe…I could not believe my eyes when I saw some of this stuff….to ensure lipstick stays where it should use a pencil and lip gloss. Pout perfection also comes from avoiding foods that cause you to lick your lips drying them out so exfoliate with concoctions such as olive oil and sugar…..OMG I think I’ve just lost the will to live…guestimate the right snogging moment, slow the whole thing down, give ‘em goosebumps and ho hum NOISE?? Oh and if you are not at the office party but doing this at home remember the kiddie winkles who just might let you know “I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus underneath the mistletoe last night.” Have a fantastic festive season…. B****r off Bates that’s a piece of holly!

MORE THAN A YACHTING FORUM With the Palma International Boat Show sadly (wisely?) called-off in 2012 due to a lack of interest from exhibitors and a similar lack of Government funding, the Balearic Island intends to come back with a bang in 2013. Not only are public and private sectors joining forces to lay on a Boat Show (from 1 to 5 May) that promises to stimulate nautical tourism on an international scale, but running alongside from 1 to 3 May there will be the inaugural Palma International Yachting Forum. Described as a “must attend” event for all international yachting professionals, the Yachting Forum will interact like-minded colleagues on a wide range of issues set to face the yachting world in 2013 and beyond. Organisers Peter Franklin and Patricia Bullock, themselves members of the Balearic Nautical Business Association, say; “The Palma International Yachting Forum has intentionally been staged at the same time as the Boat Show to provide the interactive and networking platform that all successful boat shows need. It will complete Palma’s international and professional appeal and attract overseas visitors to this great Mediterranean city. Palma has one of the finest and best established infrastructures in the world for berthing, maintaining and repairing superyachts and catering to the needs of their owners, charterers and crew – we want to showcase that.” Attended by some of the yachting industry’s most prominent experts in their respective fields, the Yachting Forum plans to not only discuss topical subjects but also act upon them. Additionally, instead of simply passively listening to presentations being delivered, delegates will interact via morning work groups that have the objective of pulling out the key points to be raised and debated at the larger afternoon sessions presided over by a panel of experts. In short, boredom levels promise to be low and value for money high. Networking opportunities will also be delivered in spades. The venue, the centrally located Chamber of Commerce building, allows for informal Spanish courtyard-style tapas lunches and facilitators will be ensuring that everyone “gets down to business”, eliminating “non-relevant discussion” so that more relaxed networking can take place from 5pm onwards i.e. a shorter “working day” than for comparable forums. Peter continues, “Aside from being satisfied on a commercial level, we would like Yachting Forum visitors to come away with a feeling that they’ve learnt a bit about Palma as a city and had a great social time. The Palma 365 Tourism Department is cooperating to offer special hotel and restaurant deals whilst organised trips to Palma’s greatest attractions such as the Aquarium, with the deepest shark tank in Europe, and imposing gothic Cathedral are scheduled for the end of each working day. For those who want to make a weekend of it, we’ll have a Golf Day organised by a PGA Professional and a Classic Car Experience organised by Mallorca Driving Club – both superb spring activities on this stunning Island.” Prices for the Palma International Yachting Forum start from 250GBP for one day, including coffee, tea, soft drinks, pastries and the tapas lunch. Other activities and flights/accommodation are excluded. Early bird applications prior to 20 December 2012 will receive a 5% cashback bonus upon arrival at the Forum in May. www.talkyachtspalma.org

RIB EXPO NEWS covering a distance of more than 2500 km over a period of almost 18 days. My fears were not unfounded; one of the boats was scratched badly from one side and needed immediate attention. While I was busy putting the boats together, my team went around getting tents, food etc organized. We would be going into real wilderness and far from any real civilization so we had to be prepared down to the smallest detail.

Andy Leeman of Marine Superstore in Mallorca is now a veteran expedition leader, and has become famous for taking RIBS on rivers, to places where few of us ever dream of going at all, let alone by RIB! Here Andy gives us a personal insight into his latest project having recently returned from another exciting and sometimes highly dangerous expedition to India. Kaladan – Kolondin is the fourth river in India that has embraced me, warmly and lovingly. Who would have thought in 2009 when we did the Ganga expedition that we would go on to sail on the mighty Bramhaputra, the small but interesting Gomati and now, the Kaladan River. I was amazed by what I saw ….the landscape, the people, and the smells. I almost felt that we were not in “India” any more. I can safely say South East Asia starts from here. I couldn’t get much information about the river except the topography available on Google earth. And from what I saw, I have no hesitation in saying, I was worried. It was a river full of rocks, rapids and strong currents. I knew I had to be better prepared. Safety of equipment and the crew was paramount. The boats were waiting for us at Lunglai ( a small and sleepy town in the state of Meghalaya). Before every expedition, my biggest fear is what states will I find my boats and engines in. This time it was no different. The boats had traveled all the way from Jaunpur in the province of Uttar Pradesh. The equipment had reached Lunglei crossing six different Indian states,

The Jungle, particularly near the river was breath taking. Looking at the forest I marveled at the many different shades of green nature had made. With hardly any village around, we were always in the middle of nowhere it seemed. I was expecting to see a lot of wildlife in the jungle but soon discovered, in my interactions with villagers that hunting was rampant in these areas. They were essentially hunter- trappers and meat was their only protein supplement. Once again I see how far removed people living along the rivers are from mainstream development. It reinforces my desire to use river expeditions as a means of drawing attention to the rivers and more importantly to condition of the people living along them. In the end our boats and engines got some real bashing. I have never changed so many props, as I did on this one. But what was important that people were fine. We did some real hard driving both up and going down the river, crossing one rapid after another. But after everyday’s hard work, we washed ourselves in the fresh water, and then cooked a nice meal. We celebrated the end of the expedition, about 15 km into Burma, with lots of emotions and so happy that we traveled this untouched river in a forgotten area on the Indo-Burmese Boarder. Once again it goes to prove, that there are people living by the river forgotten by the rest of the world, live happily from what they get from Mother Nature. I would like to say thanks to all the folks and the crew, which supported us with all they could.
A very special thanks to the big and lovely Zorba’s family. With the Misos people we always felt trusted, which you need in the world we live in. And in each expedition, there are many who help us, without being seen or heard. My heart felt gratitude to them. Much more at: www.ribexpedition.com

METS 2012 REVIEW novation and creativity both from the local Dutch and many international equipment manufacturers. The METS DAME awards have now become an industry recognised acclaim, and the German electric outboard motor manufacturer Torqeedo GMBH, took the top spot this year. Their ‘Deep Blue’ large electric outboard motor is certainly pushing the barriers of what can be done to drive a boat silently and without carbon emissions. The Deep Blue packs a hefty 80hp, which the DAME jury recognised as being somewhat revolutionary, compared to the competition which largely consists of low powered units that drive small boats very slowly, and with limited battery life.

The 25th edition of METS (Marine Equipment Trade Show) was hardly expected to disappoint anyone, and indeed it didn’t! The Dutch have a well known reputation for slick organisation and attention to detail, with all of that very evident at the 2012 event in the massive Amsterdam RAI exhibition centre from 13th to 15th November. The halls were buzzing with activity from the word go, and it was more noticeable than ever, that nautical industry networking is a huge part of the show’s appeal. Impromptu meetings were taking place in the aisles, in the various coffee bars and of course on the stands. All the exhibitors we spoke to were happy with there 3 days and thought that the investment had been justified. Richard Gardiner MD of UK based marine equipment supplier Global Services said; “This is the first time we have had our own stand here and its really paid off. On one day alone we signed supply deals for several new superyachts including a 100 metre vessel!” But as if to prove that the Netherlands is not immune from the affects of the global recession, it was announced during the breakfast meeting for the DAME product awards, that the three European countries with the lowest new boat sales revenue are Spain, Italy and Holland! Speaking with Andre Vink the MD of HISWA (Holland Yachting Group) afterwards he said; “That was a statistic that was not expected, and you could hear the disbelieving gasps in the crowd when it was heard.” It could be because the Dutch are famously cautious when it comes to money management and maybe ‘draw their horns in’ somewhat earlier than other nations do at the first sign of negative economic conditions. Also the Dutch yachting market is awash with thousands of quality boats at bargain prices. The latest front page of their well known magazine ‘Boten te Koop’ (Boats for Sale) pronounces; “18,126 Boats for Sale.” And thumbing through it looking at the prices, makes you highly aware that its happy days for buyers and desperation for many sellers! Anyway, one thing that was not found lacking at METS was in-

Choosing the Torqeedo product from 115 innovations from 25 countries the judges also picked out the fact that the motor has a built in computer that calculates remaining range, and displays travel time and direction by being coupled to an integrated GPS. Two things that you should know before getting excited about The Deep Blue, is that firstly it will only be offered as an OEM product to bona fide boat builders due to its 325 volt DC high voltage power. And, the price... A mere €17,999 (without batteries) And what of other innovations at METS? Well there were plenty, even though we could not possibly see all of them across 11 halls during the three days available. But we have chosen one, (that was not entered for the DAME Awards), for our own XMMI Group METS award 2012. This is the H20 Boat Care - xp1. What does it do? Wait for it, because it all seems so simple! It sends out high frequency vibrations from under your boat, and these influence microscopic bubbles that occur naturally in water. These bubbles implode (cavitation) and the energy that is released kills algae. But maybe more importantly, on a clean hull, the use of the xp1 will keep it that way without antifoulings! The product has been researched developed and will now be marketed by Arthur Oskamp, a well known boat builder and entrepreneur in the Dutch yachting industry. Arthur and his Continued on page 32

Our Oceans Our Future ... Biofuels (part 4) ...

Ok so you’re convinced and want to know what you need to do to your engine to make it run on chip fat? Well first you may hear that biodiesel is a great solvent. It is, it will clear out your system and before you know it your filters will be full of nasties so these need changing more frequently than with regular diesel. There have been cases where engineers have recommended switching a diesel fed engine to biodiesel to clear out persistent diesel bugs. Also, apparently biodiesel softens and eats through natural rubber so you may need to consider replacing any hoses or seals with synthetics. Some recommend you do this before you start, others say replace them if they go – as they may well last years before this happens. Oh and don’t forget using biofuel might void your warranty so before you start you should probably check that out… (don´t panic Ed, we´re not liable now…) I was nosing through some sailing forums where one particular manufacturer posted a rather unequivocal statement along the lines of “put that in our engines and your warranty is void” end of… Then I noticed another company stating that if they could assist and install the extra filters etc themselves then the warranty would remain in place. So some people are all for it, others not so much. Makes me think of a grumpy old man clutching his cod and chips in one hand whilst shaking his other in a fist and saying “Change?? We don´t like change son.” Just as the BT van pulls up to his house to install the latest fibre optic broadband. Anyway, moving on – who is biodiesel suitable for? As has been pointed out, the fuel can and does rot over time (that´s what biodegradable means) so if you´re the owner of a nice little sail yacht who rarely motors you may find that financially it´s not really viable for you. If you can run the year on a couple of tanks of diesel then converting to biodiesel wouldn´t actually benefit you; the amount of CO2 you´d inadvertently produce in the conversion (the production of the fuel… the transport of the fuel, the transport of the parts required to convert your engine etc…) would easily outweigh the odd bit of diesel you use throughout the year. Carbon footprint fail. If, however, you´re the proud owner of a little motorboat or fishing vessel, then conversion is something you really should consider. You wouldn´t only be reducing your carbon footprint; you would be saving cash. Ok, so that cash you save would always be spent on sating that inexplicable craving for a KFC after every boat trip but still, think of the environment….. (+34) 669 844 909

METS 2012 REVIEW Continued from page 30. partner, Jurgen Smit, a famous TV gardening program presenter in Holland, who caught the boating bug, have launched the xp1 under the company name: H20 BoatCare. Jurgen pointed out to us that this is not an Ultra Sonic system, and works on a completely different physical principle. Whatever the nuts and bolts are, we think its going to keep them very busy indeed as the news spreads to the international yachting market. Only one last thing to say: METS has the most journalist friendly press centre on the planet! They really look after the guys that bring the news to the nautical world, with food, drinks, information, lockers and cloakroom facilities. Plus a good WiFi connection, and enough seating and online computers for everyone. So our other X-MMI Group METS Award goes to the ladies of the RAI press centre, and long may they continue to provide their vital service to us all... talking on the dosh BACKWARDS OR FORWARDS? Although opinion is still divided, it is fair to say that many of the nations of the Euro that are currently weighed heavy by rising unemployment, contracting economies and painful and unpopular austerity programmes, would prefer to be out of the Euro. To take the example of Spain, if they were outside the currency bloc, then a cheeky devaluation of the new Peseta would make the place cheaper for the tourist, or holiday home buyer to splash their foreign cash about, put people back to work, and swell the government’s threadbare kitty. But being out of the Euro, and getting out are two very different things. Backing out of the currency and reverting to your legacy currency is virtually impossible. It was designed as a one way deal, with no exits. During and after the transition process you could expect the following. Bank runs followed by collapse of the banking system, immediate default on your bond obligations to your international investors....who would be unlikely to lend you anything else at a rate you could afford. Heavy rises in imported goods fueling rapid inflation. Years of litigation over debt redenominations. Business failures and an impoverished population, with all the political backlash that comes with it. Don’t fancy that?, well nobody does. But the case for keeping the Euro would involve a few changes too. To successfully maintain a single currency across a diverse continent, you need to cosy up a little. A cynic may well say, in fact many did and still do, that the Euro project was simply a ploy to force it’s participating nations into closer union, and eventually federal union, effectively one country. This is all but implied by European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso. It is proving blatantly impossible to run an continent wide economy with a single currency, and a single interest rate, with 17 different national governments, and 17 different tax and spend policies...in policy terms, it is like launching a boat with a hole in it. You can be sure that it will sink at some point, perhaps today, perhaps next week, but it is going down unless you fix the hole. This fix is closer political ties, a single European entity deciding tax and spend policies for the continent, and with it a converging social policy. The Spanish government is currently wetting itself over the murmurs of losing it’s powers to govern Catalonia, can you see them handing over power for the entire nation to a Brussels quango?, and EU are currently failing to negotiate their 2013 budget, arguing over pennies in real terms. So, can’t go back, can’t go forward...and staying where we are, hurling eye watering piles of cash into black holes, while crippling economies with counter productive austerity projects doesn’t sound great either. Does anybody have another way? No, not yet....anybody.... please!

The Islander Economics correspondent Phil D. Coffers

MEAT FOR YACHTS Two young entrepreneurs, have created a new company for the yachting world based in Mallorca and covering the whole of Spain. Meatforyachts, specialises in the meat supply sector. Victor Sanchez, has many years of experience in supplying meats for restaurants and hotels, as well as through his own butchers shop. And his partner Roberto Troya has years of experience working on the construction side of yachting. In this period of time he had observed that most companies supplying meats to yachts are simply middlemen. Through a simple barbecue, an idea was sprung, to unite the experience of both, to create a company exclusively dedicated to supplying the best cuts of meat at the most competitive prices on the market. Victor and Roberto plan for their company to make life easier for chefs for various reasons; - The meat goes straight from the slaughterhouse to the butchers shop to be cut exactly as the client requires. - It can be vacuum packed and divided by units or weight. - The packets come marked with their contents, units, weight all in the language the client desires - www.Meatforyachts.com is an online shop where the client can arrange for their meat to be delivered at the place and time he/she desires. PINMAR GOLF 2012 REVIEW

The 24th Pinmar Golf, co-sponsored by Awlgrip, held in October at the stunning Son Gual Golf course in Mallorca, raised a new record of €72,000 for its nominated charities. 364 players took part in the tournament, 826 guests attended the prize-giving dinner at the Come Fly With Me Theatre, and over 100 sponsoring companies and 90 volunteers supported the four-day event, all helping to make it a great success. The money raised will go to several charities including Yacht Aid Global, which delivers aid to remote coastal communities, and Allan Graham 4 Kidz, which helps disadvantaged children and young people throughout Mallorca. In addition to Awlgrip’s generous donation of €10,000, the charity total was boosted by two further exceptional contributions, the first of which was rather unfortunate. A torrential downpour accompanied by much lightning ruled out play on the Friday afternoon which meant that 88 golfers were unable to take part. The positive side was that the owners of Son Gual immediately offered to refund the green fees and buggy fees. At the prize-giving dinner on the Saturday, when Remy Millott proposed to put the €7,500 refund directly into the charity fund, we were given overwhelming support to do so by all concerned including Nick Sturge our buggy sponsor. The second major boost to this year’s figure was the timely arrival of the Norma Trease and rest of the wonderful Marina Port Vell team to take charge of the raffle which added a fantastic €13,000. With another €8,500 from the auction, on top of the money raised on the terrace and the course by all our volunteers, and generous direct donations, we reached the astonishing total of € 72,000 and that is before including the € 6,500 raised at the International Yacht Brokers Golfers Association Tournament which Alan Dale of Burgess kindly offered to add to our total.

Nick Entwistle of Pinmar said;” A huge thanks goes again to all golfers, guests, sponsors and volunteers for their fantastic support and generosity. And special thanks to everyone who missed out due to the Friday afternoon storm for your great sympathy and understanding We lost count of the number of people who came up to us and said “don’t worry, it’s not your fault and there is nothing you can do about it” and, even though that it is obviously true, it meant a great deal to us that everyone was so supportive.” The Islander/Seippel & Light team were lucky enough to play on Thursday and we would like to thank Bobby Cooper and Christian France for joining Tim Light on the course, and last minute conscript Thomas Zeigler who stood in for Peter Franklin, who was struck down with the ‘man flu’! The Islander/S&L team turned in a creditable aggregate net score of 148.5 which is many strokes better that it would have been, if the Ed had been there spraying balls into forests and lakes with his wicked slice off the tee! And congratulations to Bobby Cooper who won nearest the pin on the 5th hole wearing an Islander/S&L shirt, which earned him a GPS golf watch. So in future he can measure every shot down to the last centimetre, and play even better... PINMAR GOLF VITAL STATISTICS Number of Golfers: 364 Number at prize-giving dinner: 826 Sponsors supported the tournament: Over 100 companies Funds raised for charity : Euros 72,000 This year’s nominated charities will include: Yacht Aid Global, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the local Cancer Support Group and Action Aid. Overall winners: Best Yacht - SY Pro-rigging Dates for the 2013 tournament: 9 - 12 October Eds note: Rumours that I am retiring from competitive golf and leaving it to more athletic, talented (not to mention younger) team members in future are strenuously denied!

Yacht & Captain MY Vava flies a Cayman Islands flag and was built by Van Lent Feadship in 1996, carrying 552 GRT and her LOA is 47.5m. The Master is Glen McDonnell who has worked on ‘Vava’ in two stints, initially as the First Mate joining in New Zealand in 2002. Glen returned to ‘Vava’ in 2007 to take command. Glen joined the industry in 1995 following a not so adventurous European tour when he landed in the UK and spent nearly a year in the city of Bath doing building restorations. From Australia, he finished a degree in Business and realised office life was not for him so he travelled far and wide and gained some work in the Whitsundays and Cairns on tour boats and on a large commercial mother ship for the northern prawn fisheries. Ironically Glen was cooking on the boats back then but he liked the salt air and caught the bug for the big blue. It was the brief experience as cook and deckhand that got him a foot into the industry when he ventured to Palma from the UK, wet behind the ears, looking for a deck job. Glen got lucky and landed a deck job on MY ‘Be Mine’ within four days of being in Palma. Glen stayed on ‘Be Mine’ for three years with a great skipper who encouraged him to train and achieve qualifications. Fully qualified, Glen worked as Mate on ‘Lady in Blue’, ‘Senses’, ‘Amorazur II’, ‘Princess Marla’ and ‘Vava’ over the following seven years. Glen’s first command on MY ‘Constance’ in 2005 before returning to ‘Vava’ to take over from Ian Knight who was moving on to commence the ‘Vava II’ project. ‘Vava’ is currently in STP in Palma for a minor interior refit and will stay the winter. The yacht doesn’t really have a home berth as such, but Palma is the go-to-place they are most likely to spend time in between seasons. ‘Vava’ runs with a year-round crew of 10 of mixed nationalities: Glen explains “Poms, Ozzies, Kiwis, Cornish?!, Swedes and we often have a little Mediterranean influence just to make it a bit exotic. ‘Vava’ has always had an interesting mix so it keeps the competitive banter alive and well during international sporting crusades. We have a few veterans as well with the current record set at 14 years of service with a couple following close behind with 8-9 years of hard time.” TI asked Glen if he ever takes on extra crew. “Yes we do often take on delivery crew and extras from time to time. We were once involved in chasing the Americas Cup regattas some time ago and

Feature created by Linda Revill of Aigua Sea School this was a period when we would often beef up the crew numbers to accommodate the additional numbers of guests we would entertain. We often hire day workers to stay on top of maintenance when required and it helps us to keep the momentum up when crew need to take some time out.” What plans for the year ahead? “This summer we will likely do a little time in the Balearics in the spring followed by a visit to Italy then most likely back to Turkey and maybe Greece. My favourite med cruising is in Turkey which happens to meet with the owner’s favourite destination as well so it has become our regular summer haunt. Often in the winter we will head away most likely West to the Caribbean and sometimes further afield. My favourite destination, which once again coincides with the owner’s choice, is definitely the Bahamas for the peace, spectacular beauty, fishing and sugar white beaches. When you spend time in Mallorca .... Q: Which companies have you used in Palma that have impressed you? A: Evolution act as an agent for us and they are great problem solvers and general support. K & M Maritime look after the heavy engineering works for us and they are a great team of tradesmen. Pinmar is our go-to paint team as we have a long history and we work well together with all of their guys. E3 are our technical support for Navcoms and AV. Omni access are a great crew who look after our data communications and network admin. STP yard facilities, Technicool, IBS, Varadero, Interior Alive Carpentry to name but a few of the contractors who we have regular dealings with. Q: Is there anything lacking in Palma for the nautical sector? Or you feel that Palma leads the way? A: I would like to see the marina’s and yards take a greater interest in providing some facilities for the crew. We were in Rybovich earlier in the year and they have made great efforts to identify and accommodate the needs of the crew. It would go a long way in Palma for sure. Q: What bars and restaurants do you recommend in Palma? A: Not necessarily recommendations but my preferred: I like ‘La Boveda’ for Tapas, ‘Can Pedro’ in Genova for good Mallorcan Spanish fare and ‘Moathai’ in Marivent for an Asian fix. Q: What do you never go to sea without? A: Tanks full of diesel and my passport.
