monthly yachting news & information across the western mediterranean

dear islander Dear Islander, As the season approaches again, we see great opportunities to put our western Mediterranean countries in focus for thousands of sun starved nautical tourists, more than ever this year they will be desperate to break out of the grey financially depressing gloom of the N.European/Scandinavian climes. You will see plenty in this issue about what is on offer. Everywhere you look the water sports industry through hard work and enterprise is trying to shake off the recession cobwebs, and give itself the best possible chance to grow, to create employment and to deliver on its client’s expectations and aspirations. Why is it then, that the politicians in many of the major European countries fail to see this as one area that can really generate jobs, enterprise, tax revenues and that all important feel good factor that actually makes the world a better place for them, and their respective electorates?

Peter Franklin

What we see constantly, particularly in Spain, is a desire to strangle the golden goose before it can leave the nest and fly! Despite a lot of optimism amongst the marine associations, we are facing another season with the fiscal shackles firmly bolted around our ankles. We are told that politicians have got the message now, and are struggling with the ideological challenge of how to get through tax cuts on yachting that would seem to be favouring the rich. But Spain of all countries much like the British Isles has a rich nautical heritage; the people should instinctively know that the sea and sailing presents a way to flourish. Today’s young Optimist sailors can be the superyacht captains, brokers, yachtbuilders and designers of the future. Where is the elitism in that?

The Islander Nautical Media S.L.

Why have I chosen to point this out yet again? Because sadly ‘recreational yachts, in particular those registered outside Spain are currently the object of an investigation being carried out by Spanish Tax authorities.’ These are the recent comments of the Spanish nautical lawyer Yamandú R. Caorsi in the foreword to an excellently written guide all about fiscal inspections for yachts. Please contact us via the details below this column if you would like a copy e.mailed to you.

Several marine industry sponsors have already confirmed their support and recently Hoek Design renewed their agreement for the third consecutive year, their CEO André Hoek commented; “It is a great opportunity for us to meet with many of our yacht owners and see our designs compete on the water. The performance aspect of our designs is very important to us and we are always pleased to see our yachts do well on the race-course. We want to support these regattas and hopefully see more Hoek designed yachts racing. Presenting the Hoek Trophy to the highest scoring Hoek designed yacht has

marina ibiza news

Erica Lay - El Crew Co (+34) 673 55 76 76, erica@elcrewco.com, www.elcrewco.com

www.marinaibiza.com

Last month, we chatted a bit about sustainable seafood and what we shouldn´t really be eating. Following on from that we´re pretty proud to announce that local organization Asociacion Ondine (you may remember us from such famous local scientific research programmes such as “the Stingray Survey”) are working on producing a sustainable seafood guide to help us pick the right fishies when we´re shopping. The first of its kind in Spain! From markets to Mercadona, this handy little bundle of information will help us make the right decision. Currently under construction, there will be a website, and soon to follow, because we´re all technotastic these days, there will even be an app for iphones and other smart phones. How cool is that? So there´s no excuse when you´re at the fishmongers.

The International Marine Certification Institute has announced that Marina Ibiza has awarded the highest score possible within the Blue Star certification programme qualifying as a world class marina! To become certified as a 5 Star Marina compliant Marina Ibiza underwent an evaluation process that included an on-site inspection to guarantee full criteria compliance.

A load of local volunteers have been out scouting the local supermarkets and fresh produce markets to survey what´s available here in Mallorca in order to produce this guide. We are being supported by the Monterey Bay Aquarium too so this is pretty big!

The Blue Star Marina certification standards criteria focus on assuring delivery of improved marina security and safety performance, environmental and regulatory compliance as well as customer service, hospitality and marina management above expectations. The catalogue of criteria is reviewed yearly so the standards are up to date and implemented best practices are continuously improved to match the clients expectations. Marina Ibiza offers the best quality berthing for yachts up to 60mts and improves the experience, of both boaters and visitors, by serving top of the line leisure and hospitality services.

If you want to learn more or get involved visit the website www. asociacionondine.org and click on “download survey”. You just need to take your camera phone out to the fish counter with you and take some piccies, find out where and how the fish was caught, if it comes from a farmed source, and send the info to the guys at the Asociacion. It´s best you make friends with the dudes on the fish counters and let them know what you´re up to rather than try the supersleuth approach, I mean have you seen the size of those knives they use?

Marina Ibiza manager, Mr. Daniel Marí said: ”We are very proud to have received this award, since it represents the fruit of the efforts made by our entire team to improve every day and to offer our clients the best Marina they have ever known. Our objective from day one has been excellence in every way: in facilities, services and personal attention to each client. Thanks to this effort, we achieved that Marina Ibiza is more than a marina, its a style of life. We aim to provide the best lifestyle quality for our clients, and every detail of our facilities is aimed at achieving this.

Hopefully soon the guide will be launched and available for everyone to use. We look forward to seeing a few more yacht chefs jumping onboard with this theme and helping us to really make a difference. Anyway where was I? That´s right, back to my oysters and cava. Cos they´re on the “eat as much as you like” list. Epic.

Security and functionality are aspects which we care especially about, and we can say that the offer of leisure, catering and entertainment that Marina Ibiza offers is unique in the world. Therefore, we are happy that this effort has been recognized with the 5 Blue Star Certification and it will be an incentive to continue to improve day by day.”

Eds Note: Isn’t this something to encourage kids to get involved in? They are the future, they are the ones who have to realise that sustainability is not a god given right, but something we have to nurture ourselves. The greatest gift us old’uns can give to the world, is to foster the awareness in the future stakeholders that we never had drilled into us!

Inauguration of a summer season full of activities At the same time Marina Ibiza have inaugurated the new summer season by reopening the doors of its local Blue Marlin facility at the port. In addition to complete and exquisite breakfasts the Blue Marlin Marina Ibiza offers a daily menu specially prepared by its Chef from 12 until 18 hours. In this new season the luxurious Marina adds a variety of nautical events and entertainment, which will be held in collaboration with exclusive premises in the port. Blue Marlin Ibiza Marina is the trendiest local in Ibiza. Its strategic location on the main pier of Marina Ibiza allows its customers to enjoy unequalled views of the superyachts and the walled precinct of Dalt Vila.

tax & legal matters

Carlos Espinosa - Solicitor and Tax Adviser (+34) 627 41 32 01, carlos.espinosa@iurisnautic.com No Payments In Cash Over 2.500,-€ Last November 2012 there entered into force the prohibition amongst entrepreneurs and professional companies of payments in cash of more than 2.500,-€ as established in the Aanti-fraud Act 7/2012 (Ley 7/2012, de 29 de octubre, de modificación de la normativa tributaria y presupuestaria y de adecuación de la normativa financiera para la intensificación de las actuaciones en la prevención y lucha contra el fraude. According to this Law, whicht follows other examples introduced recently in Italy and France, there it is an absolutely prohibited to make payments of more than 2.500,-€ in cash. With the sanctions and penalties in case of being caught… 25% of the amount paid. However if one the parties that is involved in the process of payment of more than 2.500,-€ denounces the other party within the ensuing 3 months, he will be exonerated and exempted from any responsibility. This limitation has arisen due to a lot of doubts within companies and professionals so the Spanish Tax Authority has tried to make the picture absolutely clear. The first point is that it is not applicable between individuals who are not acting as entrepreneurial or professionals within their economic activity. That means for example that this limitation would not be applicable to a purchase between private persons. Then, if in one invoice there are different supplies or services the limitation applies to any single one of those and not to the total. For example; On one invoice for 4.000 euros with one item for supply of goods and one for service not exceeding 2.500, then the total invoice might be paid in cash.

letters to the editor Dear Peter, As you know Dr. Stoma in Portals Nous has been helping the needy both in Mallorca and in other parts of the world with his Mediterranea non-profit humanitarian organization for many years now. I am convinced that it would be a good idea to do something silly to raise money for this very deserving charity, so I have entered to do the 62 km runs over the Tramuntana mountains from Valldemossa to Pollenca on 20 April. Would you mention it with a few lines, and I hope that the yachting community will give generously. This will motivate me to climb the Tramuntana with the greatest gusto that I can possibly muster. Many thanks, Soren Christenson, (+34) 609 945 172 Eds reply: Dear Soren, What a man…I‘ll be there with you in spirit. I’d be there to cheer you on, if not for the fact that I’ll be in Antibes for the yacht show. We (The Islander) would like to get the ball rolling by offering you 2,00 euros for every km completed. I hope plenty of others will pile in with the dosh. Good luck with it, and don’t forget your oxygen tank!! Dear Peter, Your great magazine sold the 600 Suzuki! Many thanks. MATRICULATION TAX DEPT

In such commercial relationships in which there are current monthly , quarterly or yearly payments, the amount to be taken into account is the individual invoice in every single operation. For example in a rental agreement, the limit operates on the monthly rental price. And finally, those operations over 2.500 cannot be partially paid in cash and partially not. For example you are buying dinghy for 4.000, you cannot pay 2.000 by bank transfer and the rest in cash without infringing the Law. So from now on when paying or getting paid our advice is to play safe, and pay through credit card or transfer if the amount exceed the 2.500,€ It seems to be the end of all those purple bills bouncing around, although in recent times there were already less in evidence anyway…

algarve news

Emma Thomas - Bluewater Algarve emma@bluewateralgarve.com Olá Amigos! I must say, it’s been almost like winter here in the Algarve over the past month I’ve been amused at the boys running around checking all of the yachts we’re working on for water leaks and sorting them out if needs be - bless them! Every dehumidifier is checked out but otherwise all fine and dandy! Funnily enough, since the stormy weather we’ve had a lot of inquiries for seakeeper gyro stabilizers, ah, just the sight of swell is enough to make you queasy and no-one likes to spill their G&T hey!! In other news... The Portuguese ports of Leixões, Lisbon, Portimão, Madeira and the Azores were showcased this week at the International Cruise Shipping Miami event. The largest cruise fair in the world. It has recently emerged that a study is to be conducted into the possibility of expanding Portimão’s port. That would be jolly good news, we’ve heard of rumours for new marina with super yacht berths up to 70 meters LOA too! Last year Portugal’s ports grew by eight percent and welcomed over 1.3 million passengers, the highest number of passengers ever. Weirdly, I never notice lots of cruise ship people, I guess we hang out in different places! I just found a cool little website where we can follow the progress of the the Portuguese rower (and lots of other yachts with AIS) who is rowing to Brazil from Lagos, Algarve. Check out http://www.vesselfinder.com/?mmsi=235068559. The last time I checked he was doing 1 knot near the Cape Verdes! Hoping to write to you next time from a sunnier Algarve! Até á Proxíma! Emma Eds Note: Thanks Emma, isn’t it great that you can use this technology so easily these days. Seems that our brave rower is now tied up near Castillo del Romerrel on the south side of Las Palmas. Hope he’s found a nice little bar to take some refreshment in! According to the AIS, two yachts near him are called ‘Rain’ and ‘Darkness’ lets hope he doesn’t get too much of either...

eu scv project

www.trecvet.eu email@sea-teach.comcom For some time the free movement of labour in the Small Commercial Vessel (SCV) sector has been restricted by the refusal of one EU member state to recognise the qualifications of another. EU-funded project TRECVET pledges to break this stalemate. Standing for Transnational Recognition of European Certification in Vocational Education and Training, the Project has been underway for a year and is operated by a consortium of maritime professionals from across Europe. Currently being piloted in the UK, Spain and Germany, TRECVET’s progress has been considerable as it works towards mutual recognition of comparable SCV qualifications from EU member states. Mike John, TRECVET Project Leader and Principal of RYA Training Centre, Sea Teach, explains, “At the moment employability of commercial skippers is seriously constrained as, for example, a UK-qualified individual residing in Spain can only work on a UK-registered ship, not on an Spanish or any other EUregistered vessel and vice versa – even if the boats are identical. The innovative tool we’re working on will break down training and certification syllabi into their smallest parts allowing maritime authorities to compare them objectively from EU member state to EU member state and, we hope, allow free movement of labour and enhanced trading.” The recent release of the beta version of TRECVET’s first software tool, fexTool, has been a major project milestone. Now available to the public, it has the capability to extract and store Fundamental Elements from a syllabus in order to compare one against another. The consortium is inviting national authorities, qualification designers, maritime education and training providers and awarding bodies to test this beta version. Meanwhile work continues on the second part of the software which will allow the user to retrieve, manipulate and present meaningful information. TRECVET’s End of Project Conference is scheduled for 20 September 2013 and will be held in Palma de Mallorca. Full results will be showcased with presentations from the consortium as well as from policymakers and the stakeholders across Europe. Maritime authorities and institutions, crew agencies, accrediting bodies, shipping companies and journalists will also be present at the conference. For more information about the Project, fexTool and Conference visit www.trecvet.eu or write to us at email@sea-teach.com.

technology update

Roger Horner - E3 Systems (+34) 971 404 208 info@e3s.com www.e3s.com Mobile data networks are responsible for significant economic growth. A report, undertaken by the mobile industry body GSMA and Deloitte Consulting found that mobile telephony services such as 3G are driving economic growth. The new research has revealed the upgrade to 3G in particular was a significant economic driver. I wonder if moving on to 4G LTE will continue that growth or even accelerate it. I suspect it will accelerate it. They analyzed over 90 mobile markets and demonstrated that a 10 per cent rise in 3G penetration increases GDP per capita growth by 0.15 per cent. According to the report, the use of mobile data has grown 350 per cent in Western European countries, and on a global scale more than doubled on average every year from 2005 to 2010. Other findings reveal that, in developing markets, a 10 per cent growth in mobile penetration increases productivity by 4.2 per cent – with “huge” economic potential following the roll-out of mobile data networks. With regard to 4G LTE the market research firm, Infonetics Research, have released excerpts from their 2012 LTE Deployment Strategies report and it shows that increased average revenue per user (ARPU) is one of the leading expectations of the technology by the service providers, along with spectral efficiencies that will drive down the cost per gigabyte. We have already seen this in practice. 4G LTE Deployment Update around the shores of the Med We keep being asked what the deployment progress is of 4G LTE for this summer. Currently 3G and HSPA+ is widespread around the coastlines of the Med. There has been a growth of HSPA+. HSPA+ works using 3G technology and is sometimes referred to as 4G. This is not the same as 4G LTE. It is faster than 3G but not as fast as 4G LTE. Some service providers in the countries bordering the Med have implemented trial services over the last few years such as SFR in Montpelier, so the trails are progressing but to get deployment along the coast will be sporadic for a while yet. Spain – early days. All operators plan to launch trial services sometime in 2013. Portugal – all operators launched trial services in March 2012. France – Orange & SFR launched trial services in Nov 2012, as mentioned above in locations such as Montpelier and Lyon. Monaco – Orange/Monaco Telecom launched service in 2012. This is currently our only 4G service of significant use to yachts

in the Med. Italy – Vodafone & TIM & 3 Italy launched trial services in Oct/ Nov 2012. Croatia – VIPnet & T Mobile launched trial services in March 2012. Greece – Vodafone launched trial services in December 2012. Turkey – all operators plan to launch services in 2016. Stunning Bill Shock Shock! Bill Shock is not usually something to laugh about but this story made me smile. Bill Shock is the term used to describe the issue when you receive a rather large, unexpected telecoms bill. This one happened in October 2012. A French telephone user was sent a bill for 12 quadrillion Euros (yes, that’s a real number) – amounting to 6,000 times the yearly economic output of France as a whole. Fortunately, sense prevailed on that occasion and the bill was waived! New messaging services taking out text messaging (SMS). Since its first commercial deployment in 1993, SMS has grown to be a key mobile service. It was estimated that 6.1 trillion SMS messages were sent in 2010. The service has also been a significant revenue generator for mobile operators, and in Q2 2012 made up more than a quarter of recurring revenues for operators in the developed world such as Vodafone and O2 (Telefonica) in the UK, Proximus (Belgacom) in Belgium and Optus (SingTel) in Australia. However, recently SMS volumes and revenues in some mature markets have started to decline in the face of competition from third-party over-the-top (OTT) messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Blackberry Messenger, Facebook Messenger and Apple iMessage. More than 45 percent of smartphone users take advantage of instant messaging (IM) and these over-thetop (OTT) messaging services in addition to using SMS. A new report from Analysys Mason found that the OTT app WhatsApp is the first large-scale cross-platform messaging app, with nearly 20 percent of smartphone owners using it. Interestingly they also found different usage trends during the day. Voice usage takes precedence during the working day, with traditional voice use trailing off in the evening. Instant messaging and social networking see a spike in use during the evening and nighttime. The report also found that the cost of SMS and voice services

can encourage consumers to use OTT messaging and mobile VoIP services. For example, here in Spain, where the cost of SMS and voice services have been relatively high, one-third of smartphone users use mobile VoIP and 80 percent use IM or OTT messaging. What would you have? Samsung Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5 There was a big hype in New York this week for the launch of Samsung’s new top of the range smartphone. It’s significant that Samsung chose Radio City Music Hall, New York, just a couple of blocks down the road from Apple’s big New York store, as the venue for their launch! Below is a basic feature comparison to help to get a handle of what the new Samsung has on-board. Size: The S4 is bigger than the iPhone 5. I would recommend before making a decision, you should get your hands on both devices to find out which size you prefer. Build material: The Galaxy S4 is primarily made of the same plastic as the Galaxy S3. The iPhone 5 is made primarily of anodized aluminum. If you’re looking for a premium-feeling build, the iPhone 5 stands head-and-shoulders above the somewhat cheap-feeling Galaxy S4. Weight: The iPhone 5 is still the lightest. The Galaxy S4 is 16 percent heavier than Apple’s flagship. The flip side this is that the extra 18g nets you a significantly better and bigger screen. Display: This is where the S4 starts to win. You get an extra diagonal inch of display and over a million extra pixels. RAM: The Galaxy S4 has 2 GB of random-access memory (RAM) compared to the iPhone’s 1 GB. Storage: Apart from the Galaxy S4’s microSD card (expandable to 64 GB), storage options are even. Wireless: In regions where 4G LTE is available, both phones should support it. Samsung will sell a separate GS4 model that maxes out at HSPA+ speeds (relatively fast, but not LTE fast) in select regions. The iPhone 5 will also default to HSPA+ if LTE isn’t available.

But you can’t take battery capacity as an absolute indicator of actual uptime – especially when the S4’s battery is powering a display with more than one million extra pixels. Cameras: Samsung is heavily pushing its software-based camera features in the Galaxy S4. These include Dual Camera (it simultaneously snaps shots and videos with both cameras and lets you overlay one inside the other), Drama Shot (a burst mode that combines the images into a collage), and Sound & Shot (records an audio clip along with still shots). So a quick overview. What do you reckon? Not a revolution but an evolution. Samsung have worked a lot more on the software rather than hardware improvements in the new S4. That’s all for this month. Please make sure your yacht is all teched-up in preparation for your summer guests. Impress them - don’t disappoint them!

doctor at sea: what have they done to my eng1? tion (2 years) ENG1 to an older person who is in good health. It seems wrong to issue a shorter certificate purely on the basis of age and, if advancing years do take their toll in the shape of significant illness and/or sickness absence, then the requirement to come back for review facilitates an updated decision and a more appropriate certificate going forward.

Dr. Ken Prudhoe - Club de Mar Medical Centre (+34) 639 949 125, drken@clubdemarmedical.com A revamped ENG1 certificate started to circulate in December. The differences are subtle but do bring the wording into line with the revisions to the STCW Convention resulting from the 2010 Manila Convention and which have started to roll out last year. The new certificate includes information on nationality, date of most recent colour vision check (must be within past four years with a particular MCA Approved Doctor), date of most recent hearing test (must be within past ten years with a particular MCA Approved Doctor). The hearing test was introduced in January 2010 and one of the tests recommended by the MCA is a speech recognition exercise based on picking out spoken numbers against a background of noise which sounds like VHF interference. The test was originally designed and validated by the UK Royal National Institute for the Deaf, now Action on Hearing Loss, and their test is freely available on the internet for any family member you may think is not hearing you! There are also explicit instructions under the Restrictions section to avoid including any clinical details on the ENG1. This has always been good practice but sometimes restrictions were couched in terms which betrayed the underlying medical condition that gave rise to the restriction and this should, in principle, remain confidential to the seafarer and the doctor. The Notes on the reverse side have increased and include clarification on the next step if a restriction or failure is decided. An ENG3 certificate is issued in these circumstances and there is a procedure to appeal the decision if the candidate thinks that is indicated. It is still necessary to report back to the MCA Approved Doctor if there has been a significant health problem or the individual has had a spell of sickness absence lasting more than 30 days. I think this is a useful safety net when issuing a maximum durawww.clubdemarmedical.com

The Notes also make it very clear that the original certificate must be surrendered to the Approved Doctor at the next medical. This was the case previously but it can be a real problem for young yachties living out of a rucksack thousands of miles from home, often relying on scanned documents on flash drives, or, worse still, leaving them at home or on a previous boat and without any sort of copy available. It looks like the unambiguous need to surrender the previous original is the shape of things to come and this could lead to tedious delays if original documentation is not treated as carefully as, for example, passports or discharge books. Some ENG1 candidates ask rather nervously about the ENG2 which they spot me completing during the interview and they imagine they have come to the wrong place! The ENG2 is only a form (all the ENG forms are a Civil Services inventory abbreviation for this cluster of forms dealing with Examination Nautical Grade – “Forms, for the completion thereof!”). The form is used as the basis of the written medical record for a particular individual and remains confidential – it is not shared with the Captain or anyone else on the boat although it may be copied to the MCA Medical Referee system in the event of an appeal against a decision. The ENG2 form has escaped the revision relatively unscathed but there are a few changes such as more detail about the previous ENG1 check including the outcome and who did it and when. This is a further attempt to introduce some continuity into the system and is another reason for having the previous certificate available for the next Approved Doctor to read. The MCA look badly on individuals who react to a restriction (or a fail) by shopping around and presenting afresh to another doctor, and without their past paperwork, hoping to get a more favourable decision. There is a marginal subjective element in interpreting the medical guidelines which can lead to some marginally different decisions but many conditions are clearcut and the decision by another doctor is likely to confirm the previous one. The correct route is to appeal but this can take time and the boat will be gone. Usually better to have a meeting of minds at the medical.

galley goddess Easter, ahhh, yes, Easter is here, warm winds are a blowing along with all the religious traditions that are associated with this holiday. And that fabulous excuse we all have to gorge ourselves on chocolate. But as far as I can find, there is no evidence of any cute, long eared, cotton tailed bugs known as the Easter Bunny. And, what about fluffy yellow chicks? Jesus dying, yeah, tick, Jesus coming back from the dead, double check, but rabbits and chicks, sorry, this is a no go. Why are these traditions so ingrained in Easter Sunday? And, what do they have to do with the resurrection of Jesus? Answer : absolutely, bloody nothing.........¨thats all folks¨ So with all these sweet. appealing, winsome chocky delights sitting in the shops waiting for us to snatch them up in greedy anticipation I feel quite justified that I will not be offending anyone with my choice of recipe this month. Rabbit Terrine 1 rabbit , cut up into four(1.2kg) 1 glass of white wine for the rabbit, one for self 500ml pork stock, 80gms shelled, roasted pistachios zest of 1 lemon zest of half an orange thyme and rosemary 5 cloves of garlic 2 shallots 300 grams diced speck 100 grams of ham or Jamon serano Fry rabbit in oil to seal and transfer to a roasting tray, pour wine over, cover with foil and roast at 180C for half an hour until the rabbit is just cooked then rest it for another half an hour. Pick off all the meat, meanwhile strain all the cooking juices and reduce by two thirds volume, set aside. Line a terrine with cling film then the ham or jamon. Mix rabbit with all other ingredients except the cooking juices, season. Pack that rabbit into the terrine and pour over the cooking juices, fold over the ham and cling film. Place a weight on top and refrigerate overnight. Serve with chutney and toast. With the weather looking to be glorious this will be a definite winner at the bbq you are most likely to be invited to -

master bates: overheard & overboard

Semper in excreta solum profundum variat

For a yachting magazine I reckon this fair organ does a pretty good job of covering matters financial. And well it should... yachties are not immune from the ravages of the cruel financial world, even if they do look all suntanned, fit and carefree! I usually sneak a look at the stuff from Phil D. Coffers who seems to know a thing or two about bean counting, and the scribes of our man Carlos, who has managed to fill page 10 for what seems like half a lifetime. He also knows his onions when it comes to matters of the dinero. Although he often has unsavoury news to deliver from his little tax guidance black book. What I see in both their articles this month, is more evidence (as if it were needed) that all of today’s politicians, irrespective of nationality, are a gutless bunch of woosies! Whatever happened to the old statesman who took it on the chin, and delivered bad news if it had to be told, and didn’t give a bugger about the consequences? We have ‘U turn Cameron’ our man at the helm of HMS UK, (god help us if the GPS plotter fails!) He who floats ideas like lollipop sticks on a pond, and then plucks them out and hides them if others don’t agree! Ms. Merkel has given up all ideas of being a European Statesperson, and resorted to protecting her rather ample arse, desperately hoping to keep it firmly planted on the Chancellors seat after the next German elections. The Italians are thinking to re hire a disgraced self delusional psychopathic megla/sex maniac... such is their woeful lack of choice! And it may not be a coincidence that Cyprus, under the leadership of President Dimitris Christofias from 2008 until just recently, have managed to plummet from one of the healthiest and most solid economies in Europe to the shell shocked, impoverished and (even more) divided island that it now is. It also may not be a coincidence that Cyprus is flooded with (now sorely threatened) Russian money, and the fact that Mr. Christofias spent five years studying in Moscow. (Wikipedia fact...) Here in Spain there seems to be an obsession with grabbing more and more from whoever, irrespective of any long term consequences, and still giving signals that it could still be OK to be a little dodgy maybe! I give you the tax amnesty (strangely not taken up by many it seems) which offered a 10% ‘get out of jail cheap card’ for fiddlers and tax cheats. Now it seems in a bid to cut down on cash transactions, they will reward the receiver of the ‘wad of folding’ with total exoneration, providing that he grasses up on the bloke who first gives it to him...oy vey! So, which ever way you look at it, Europe has become like some daily episode of a hideous pan continental muppet show being played out on our TV screens and mobile devices. There is seemingly no end in sight to the bizarre twisting and turning episodes which are yet to be virtually scripted. And all because of the Euro....why did we do it??

Talking of the euro... oh how those poor Brussels politicians have slaved into the night to grapple with all these fiscal problems. It makes me feel quite guilty when I turn on the breakfast TV after a good nights sleep, and hear how they have been frantically deliberating into the early hours. But there again... maybe, just maybe, they could get finished earlier if they had their mind on the job? In case you didn’t see my last pictorial account of a day in a euro MP’s life, here’s another example... What a turn up for this year’s Palma Boat Show, with wall to wall superyachts pervading the place, a superyacht forum, and real entertainment being laid on all over the show, to make it a fun place to be. Now, this column has been one the show’s loudest critics for more years than I can count, but I have to say that I am very impressed with the way the local yachting community have put their shoulders to the wheel. OK, we all know its going to be hard to convince overseas visitors to flock here after last year’s cancellation. The website could be better, it could have been up sooner, it would have been better if Palma and Port Adriano had sat down and talked last year, instead of now looking like they are running competitive shows on the same days, on the same island.... I could go on, but I won’t... because its easy to moan and point fingers, but its not so easy turn something around that resembles a supertanker headed for a gianormous iceberg! That’s what we had last year, but due to the efforts of many people in private yachting, working with a more commercially minded administration in government and town hall, we are now sailing in deeper, warmer waters again. That’s to be commended, embraced and taken advantage of. Now it needs fair weather (should be do-able) and plenty of punters coming through the turnstiles. This should be professionals, boat buyers and charterers, fishermen, kayakers, dinghy sailors et al, there will be something for them all! Tell everyone you know, put it on your Facebook page....Palma expects!! So endeth the Bates sermon! And just room for a few... oh so politically incorrect gags from my little red book: Like the guy who fitted strobe lights in the bedroom. “They’re brilliant”, he said. “It makes the wife look like she’s actually moving during sex...” Or about the Essex girl in bed with her boyfriend who says, “How dare you call me a slapper. Get out of my bed right now and take your mates with you!” Then there is the story about a big row that has broken out in the Irish Olympic Synchronised Diving Team... after Paddy accused Mick of copying him. And, condoms don’t guarantee safe sex. My friend was wearing one when he was shot by the woman’s husband.

The trendy characterful area of Santa Catalina, a few minutes walk from the port of Palma, continues to grow the number of companies offering various marine services. What with the great variety of restaurants, bars and of course the famous market being there it sometimes appear to be the busiest place in the whole of Mallorca! And definitely the happy hunting grounds of the hawk eyed traffic wardens who are taking their responsibility to alleviate the Spanish economic shortfall very seriously indeed. Please don’t chance parking there without a valid ticket or you will be financially punished for sure.

Workshops will also run regularly from ASS base No 2.

We would not attempt to list all of the marine companies based there for fear of leaving somebody out, but two recent additions to the area are a brand new showroom for Finest Bed Linen at Calle Caro 9. And a second classroom (technical training centre) for Aigua Sea School at San Magi 69b. Linen and bedding for yachts. The Finest Bed Linen Showroom and workshop is 180m2 in total and the company is able to make up their own (and clients) designs all in house. They carry a whole range of Egyptian Cotton fabrics, plus they have a large stock of towels, robes, pillows, toppers and duvets in stock. They will also be stocking a range of yachting toiletries such as small shampoos, Shower gels etc from a luxury brand. FBL are agents for a number of the leading fabric manufactures for soft furnishings inside and outside which they can make up. Other interior designers and manufacturers are also welcome to purchase fabrics from them for their own projects. Joint owners Danny and Philip say that the showroom allows them to showcase their products and invite clients to be a part of their production. They also sell top branded beds and have a yacht style demonstration bed in the showroom. Technical Training for Yacht Crew. Aigua Sea School’s new classroom is now open after a complete refurbishment of the premises, topped off with a rather natty nautical style graffiti design on its outer shutter door. It promises to be kept very busy from the word go, with school principle Linda Revell planning to carry out more shorebased courses than ever before, including Yachtmaster Ocean workshops, and the newly required Professional Practices and Responsibilities course. The ever-popular Navigation Theory

To help facilitate this change for Aigua Sea School, The Islander Media Group office has moved from 69b across the road to no 74, which is on a rented space arrangement with Indi-Clean Group, who run their specialist yacht cleaning and interior fire proofing business from these premises which they own. Santa Catalina is a great area with a real cooperative atmosphere amongst the various marine companies there, who are always willing to help each other out, take messages, and take in parcels for each other etc.

oversexed & over here

So here we go again into the old debate about renting and the difference between touristica and vivienda contracts; I see the old DB has gone to great lengths to explain what it means and how it affects anyone wishing to rent their property, oh and whether they need….surprise, surprise a licence to do it. Now the bottom line is you need as we all well know a licence to do just about anything in Spain, however this one is worth exploring particularly if you are thinking about renting out an apartment; it’s worth remembering that if you own property you can legitimately rent it out but what you have to do to stay out of trouble is to keep within the boundary of the law regarding apartments, houses and the good old contracts. Also check out what you can claim against tax, there was a myth a few years ago that the best thing to do was to keep everything hush, hush……snort (from Hacienda) ……. not so. It was interesting to see exactly what could be offset thus reducing liabilities considerably but it was also comforting to know that the great tax office in the sky was happy and were not likely to come up with calculations of back tax owed. From the point of view of the renter my preferred option has always been to go for the old vivienda contract. More housing stuff….DIYing….yikes is that the dulcet sound of several thousand armchairs being vacated across the island and back doors (or any kind of doors) being closed non too ceremoniously in the great male escape!!....... (oops sorry chaps). Now then as winter turns to spring (we’ll soon forget about torrential rain and be grumbling about the heat) why not give the love of your life a lovely surprise (or shock as the case maybe) and pick up that brush and tin of paint, c’mon just how long has the paint department been tripping up the dogs and kids never mind the one who should be obeyed. I kid you not chaps one day in the not too distant you’ll thank me for this pequeña piece of advice as you chill out with an ice cold beer whilst the bbq sizzles, so get rockin with the roller…. Ok girls job done! And so to the garden…. A man goes into the local ferret (hardware) shop to buy a chainsaw and finds one that is guaranteed to fell even the largest tree in under a minute. He takes it home with enthusiasm that knows no bounds only to return it the next day complaining: “A minute, my bum” he says. “I started cutting down a tree yesterday lunchtime and by six, I’d only managed to get half-way through the trunk.” Apologising, the shop assistant says “I’m sorry, perhaps the engine’s air-to-fuel ratio is out of adjustment, I’ll just check.” He pulls the starter and voila the chainsaw roars into action. ‘Bloody hell!’ shouts the man, “What’s that noise?”!! ……...

30th boat show palma Show. The timing is good for Marina Estrella as we’ve not only got great models to display, from sporty Cobalts to substantial flybridge Azimuts, but 2013 also heralds the launch our new Marina Estrella Charter and Marina Estrella Service Divisions as well as the relaunch of our main website. Marina Estrella TV is also in the pipeline. The market is stabilising, sales are already improved year-on-year and we are looking forward to a rewarding season.” For more information on the show visit: www.boatshowpalma.com With the 2012 event conspicuous by its absence, the pressure is on to deliver a sensational 30th edition of the Palma International Boat Show. Running from 1 to 5 May 2013, organisers have overhauled the format into an activity-packed ‘nautical week’ and, with the International Yachting Forum and Superyacht Brokerage and Charter Show running alongside, there’s plenty to shout about. Director of the Boat Show, Chema Sans, explains, “Having listened to feedback from both exhibitors and the public we’ve revamped the format. First, the Show will be five days rather than nine with a late party night on the Friday for entertainment and concerts. Second, to make the week special for everyone, we’re laying on TapaMar, a celebration of seafood, Maremostra, the 2013 Ocean International Film Festival, a classic boat display, sailing boat taster sessions for teenagers plus the PalmaVela Regatta in the Bay of Palma. This is now a festival with a maritime flavour which showcases the Balearics’ strength as a leading nautical destination.” The new Show setup has gone down well with exhibitors and bookings are strong. 202 floating berths are available for boats ranging between eight and 65 metres, power and sail, new and pre-loved, alongside 5,000m² of land-based exhibition in tented stands and open air displays. Amongst them is Marina Estrella, a 40-year established business representing Azimut Yachts, Atlantis, Minorchino, Cobalt, Hanse and Moody - a business that sees the Balearics as one of the most important areas amongst its 20 location network. Andreas Reifers from Marina Estrella, says, “This year we’ll be taking 15 boats to Palma and this sizeable commitment demonstrates our confidence in a successful 30th edition of the

Another sector strongly represented in May will be yachts over 24 metres by way of the dedicated Palma Superyacht Brokerage and Charter Show. Moll Vell Marina will play host to more than 40 vessels up to 65 metres in length as part of a new initiative to highlight the importance of the superyacht industry and the significant foreign revenue inflow and local employment it generates on the Island. The Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA) has been formed specifically to promote and champion this innovative Superyacht Show-within-a-Show. Jamie Small, Sales Manager for Burgess Yachts, one of the six companies in the BYBA, comments, “It’s time that superyachts had a greater presence at the Palma International Boat Show as, after all, they do form a substantial part of the Balearics yachting community. The shortened programme will also help to focus our attention onto five days of serious beginning-ofseason business and take less time out of the crews’ packed schedules. I’m also glad that this year’s Boat Show captures the bigger picture and highlights Mallorca as a complete destination with superb culture, cuisine, sailing and nightlife. I am sure it will set the template for years to come.” For more information on the Show visit: www.boatshowpalma.com. Tickets are five euros on the day, three euros if booked in advance and free for pensioners and children under 12 years of age. For more information on the Palma International Yachting Forum for industry professionals running alongside the Show from 1 to 3 May visit www.talkyachtspalma.org.

pearl 75 comes to portals is a result of demand from our current owners, some of whom have been involved in the development process. The new Pearl 75 will be the largest of the Pearl fleet, offering owners four luxuriously appointed staterooms and a unique open-plan galley, lower helm and seating area sheltered under a conservatory-style glass roof.”

Enquiries: Baxter Marine (+34) 971 67 67 86, info@baxtermarine.com Amongst the PSP Southampton Boat Show’s record number of launches last year was the Pearl 75, the flagship of the fastgrowing Stratford-Upon-Avon based manufacturer – Pearl Motor Yachts. Pearl’s designer and designer to the stars, Kelly Hoppen MBE, has made a really impressive and uniquely stylish job of the interior of the Pearl 75. Her famous eye for detail, combined with the highly effective use of space onboard has produced a 75 footer (22.5 metre), which really stands out from the crowd in this size range. The generous 6 metre beam enabled by the clutter free installation of two ZF series 4000 pod drives, gives the yacht an impressively large interior with four really good size en-suite cabins, and space for 3 crew. The pods are hooked up to 2 x CAT C18 1150HP diesels, which give the 75 an impressive performance up to 30 knots, and the handling characteristics to make high speed turns which would do credit to a 10 metre RIB. The manufacturers made Puerto Portals the first stop in a Mediterranean launch tour for this spring, The Islander film crew were there to witness the sea trials on 21st March, and to capture the action on a lovely sunny day in the Bay of Palma. On the previous day Motorboat & Yachting’s test skipper had put the boat through its paces, and said that it was the most impressive handling he had witnessed in almost 300 boat trial reviews! South African born Kelly Hoppen is a world-renowned British based interior designer who has pioneered a simple yet opulent style that has permeated interior design at every level. Always in demand, she has designed apartments, houses and yachts for an ever-expanding international private client list alongside commercial design projects including hotels, restaurants, office spaces and aircraft interiors – most notably the British Airways first class cabins. Pearl Motor Yachts was thrilled to secure her services to envision the interior of the Pearl 75. Pearl 75 is new flagship Iain Smallridge, Pearl’s Managing Director, said of the collaboration, “The international reputation of Kelly Hoppen precedes her and this exciting new partnership will continue to keep Pearl at the forefront of innovative yacht design as we strive to offer our customers something a little different. The Pearl 75 has been on the drawing board for nearly three years and

The famous ‘Hoppen’ style fuses together the eastern principles of simplicity and balance and the western tastes for sumptuous textures and luxurious finishes. Combine this with Bill Dixon, one of the world’s leading yacht design studios and naval architects with yachts in build on five of the world’s seven continents, and it’s clear that the Pearl 75 is a formidable beast. “Understated luxury” is the watchword and, like all Pearl yachts, unrivalled quality is consistent throughout. The technical systems of the boat are state-of-the-art, featuring joystick manoeuvrability with sports boat performance. This technology means the boat can be operated with or without crew as preferred. Externally a jetski garage and a hydraulic bathing platform accommodate the tender and toys without compromising on flybridge space up top. Talking with The Islander after the sea trial Iain Smallridge said he was very pleased with the 75’s debut, “We have a multitude of clientele from all over the world, businessmen, famous people, professionals, its a varied mixture. “We will have the yacht at the Palma Boat Show in May and are confident of seeing more sales for this model in 2013”, said Iain. crewshow 2013

More information www.dovaston.com or call Mood Beach on 971 676 456 This year’s CrewShow, organised by the crew agency Dovaston Crew, is almost upon us. Make sure you keep the afternoon of Friday April 26th free for this important event in the Mediterranean nautical calendar. Phil Edwards from Dovaston Crew tells us that the show is virtually sold out and has been for months. “If any business wants a last minute place to exhibit at the show then they will really have to be quick”. The CrewShow manages to fulfil two important roles in the nautical industry: it enables the businesses to get together and network and it allows the crew and clients to do the same. The format which has been tweaked over the last four years allows for a networking lunch for the exhibitors before the doors are thrown open at 4pm and literally hundreds of visitors flood in to see and be seen.

straight talk on the dosh

Phil D. Coffers The Islander Economics Correspondent David & Goliath...my money is on the little guy. We are all familiar with the biblical fable of David and Goliath. The parable that suggests you underestimate the little guy at your peril. This particular story took place in Israel 2000 years ago. But in the 21st century, you don’t have to travel too far to the west to see the same cautionary tale being played out in the Eastern Mediterranean, but this time, on little Cyprus. Cyprus is in trouble. It doesn’t have enough money to pay the epic debts run up by it`s banking system, grotesquely bloated by Russian money, much of it of questionable origin, to over eight times her entire economy. They (at the time of writing) are possibly days away from an implosion that, without a substantial handout from, well frankly anywhere, will bust it’s banks, and prompt a de-facto exit from the Euro bloc. This, as you may imagine has not played well amongst the ordinary working Cypriots who have watched open mouthed as their banks have impounded their money and closed their doors to prevent a catastrophic bank run, while their ruling classes frantically seek a solution. Nor has it played well with the powerful Russian billionaires who have for so long used Cyprus as a safehouse for their wealth. So, under pressure from it’s populace on one side, and it’s wealthy Russian benefactors on the other, the Cypriot government called Germany’s bluff and rejected their demands. Just as Greece and Portugal had previously. On those occasions Germany blinked and, reluctantly wrote more cheques. This time, they called the bluff and told Cyprus to think again. Presumably the calculation was that Cyprus is too small to deliver the fatal blow to the Euro project. Should Cyprus fail to raise the required capital from her people, from the Russian government, or their Russian investors then the Euro’s first eviction would seem inevitable. Then what?. What if, after the ensuing turmoil Cyprus flourished?, could this prompt a stampede for the exits from the Euro’s other troubled members Spain, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, and possibly even France? Germany are playing a very high stakes game of bluff with Cyprus, and who could blame them. At some point you have to say enough, draw your line in the sand, and face whatever consequences ensue. The Euro is getting closer to decision time by the day. The decision as to whether to dismantle the project in an orderly fashion, or to keep propping it up until it either, miraculously, improbably prevails....or collapses around its ears. Could it be that the mighty Goliath of the Euro project is dropped by a lucky shot from the little guy?. These are strange times indeed, and indeed anything is possible.

obituary – brian thomas Brian was born in Grangetown, Cardiff on the 5th of April 1947 as the youngest child of Iris and Harry Thomas and brother to Derek and Deanne. He was educated at Grangetown Junior School and Ninian Park Secondary Modern. He first joined the cubs and later the scouts movement to eventually go on to being a scout leader and achieve the Queen´s Scout Award. In the early 60s during his apprenticeship as an electrician at Guest, Keen and Nettlefold Steelworks he started racing first hornets and lazers and later cruisers at Penarth and Barry Yacht Club. In the mid ´70s he first took a season´s leave from his job in the UK to work with Windjammer Barefoot Cruises in Florida. With his cheerful nature and his guitar playing he made friends in those days that remained close to him throughout his live. Returning to the UK he met Billy Porter in ´78 with whom he raced on Whirlwind V in Solent-points races and the R.O.R C series including the infamous ´79 Fastnet race. In ´81 he finally decided to make his love for sailing his career and left his job in Wales for good to join Billy on Whirlwind XIII, a 76´ Swan, the start of his career as professional crew. He returned to the Solent in ´83 as captain on Yellowdrama V, a Swan 651, to win 1st overall in the Rolex Swan European Cup. In ´88 Brian got married to Jane and they continued to work together. He also started working on the Swan 651 Livia that year and first came to Puerto Portals, which was to remain his main base for many years to come. In ´98 after a year in Venezuela and after his divorce from Jane he joined the Jongert 29 Spirit of Bowfish, again based in Puerto Portals. It was on this boat that in 2002 Brian met his partner Symke, and they worked together ever since, leaving Spirit to join first in 2005 M/Y Sunbird and in 2008 their last boat M/Y Lola D, spending the recent years based in Malta. Throughout his life and his work on yachts Brian touched many people with his kindness and his smile. He always had time for people, leaving them a bit happier than they had been before. With his love for life and the sea, and of course also for a drink and a song on the guitar, he moved many of us and put a smile on many a face. Brian was well liked and respected by his fellow captains and loved by his crew. Brian died in a car crash on the 1st of December 2012 in Northern Germany. He will be sorely missed.

Held from 1 – 5th May within the Palma Boat Show, they now have over 60 moorings available to exhibit yachts for both sale and charter from 24m in length. “We were surprised by the demand from brokers that wanted to exhibit their yachts at the show. However this really just enforces our conviction that there is definitely a market for this show in Palma”, commented Marc Händle, vice president of the newly formed Balearic Yacht Brokers Association, (BYBA) who is organizing the event. An impressive range of yachts will be on view. Confirmed is the 44m S/Y Canica, built by Baltic Yachts with a Judel/Vrolijk design pedigree. This fast performance sailing yacht, constructed using the best lightweight materials, reaches speeds of over 20 knots and has an interior design by renowned John Munford. Also confirmed is the 36.5m M/Y Gin Tonic which offers accommodation for 12 guests and a large exterior area. Her spacious al fresco dining areas also provide plenty of room for guests to enjoy the spectacular surroundings at sea. To compliment the show there will be a large tent that will house a champagne bar, a chill out area as well as a bar where visitors can relax and enjoy a gin and tonic of a different kind. Each evening will see live music played around sunset to round off the perfect day.

yacht & captain: sarita of iken

Sarita of Iken is a 82ft sail yacht built by Oyster Marine and launched in 2005. The exterior design and engineering are the work of Rob Humphreys, who is also responsible for her interior design. Sarita wears the British ensign and carries 72 GRT.

A: I have recently discovered a steak house called Patxi’s. Huge chunks of meat and black pudding tapas, you can’t go wrong.

The captain is Andrew Cooper. Andrew has worked for the same owner for three years, initially on S/Y Tenacious, a 115ft schooner, as First mate, before joining S/Y Marie as Bosun. Andrew joined the 184ft ketch towards the end of the build in Vitters Shipyard. Marie is an active racing yacht and was involved in many regattas, Andrew’s race position has been mizzen sail trim.

A: I never go to sea without a trustworthy crew and Roast Beef Monster Munch.

Andrew loves all outdoor pursuits and amongst other things he is a qualified ski instructor and Dive Master. He is a keen fisherman and loves water sports; he is especially talented wake boarder. Andrew has extensive cruising experience in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bahamas and the North Atlantic coastlines. Sarita is run by Andrew and his wife Patience, who is the chef onboard. They run the boat together during down time and employ an additional crew member for the season, for the owner and his family as well as for charters. They spent last summer in Croatia cruising the very rugged and beautiful coast line. This summer they plan to go the Genoa boat show for the end of April. From there they will be cruising Sardinia, Corsica, Almafi Coast as well as additional parts of the west coast of Italy. The end of the season will see the yacht return to Palma and then most likely head west to the Caribbean in search of warmer climes. For a passage of this length Andrew will typically employ an additional four crew. Q: Which companies have you used in Palma that have impressed you? A: I have used Revival for reupholstering deck seating. They have produced some top quality work at very competitive pricing. Q: What bars and restaurants do you recommend in Palma (or island wide)?

Q: What do you never go to sea without?

Q: Best moments onboard? A: Best moment on board was spearing a 1.5m Mahi. We stopped mid Adriatic drifting in a glass sea. The bull came right up to the boat following its mate on the fishing line and then it was curtains for both … fresh fish for the next three days. Q: What would your advice be to someone starting out in the industry? A: For someone who is starting out in the industry it is crucial that their glass is always half full and never half empty, metaphorically speaking of course. Q: What are the necessary personal attributes to be a successful captain? A: To be a successful captain I believe that everyone should be treated equally. Nothing is worse than favouritism, it creates divides and can make crew members life on board a misery.
