Music & Wine By Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

C

an background music affect the taste of wine and champagne? The latest research says yes!

A growing body of scientific evidence shows that what people taste when evaluating a wine can be influenced by the music that happens to be playing at the same time. It has long been known that what we hear can influence aspects of tasting. This is because out of all our sensory organs, the tongue is the “dumbest,” meaning that all of our other senses (hearing, smell and sight) are more acute and strongly influence taste. When we eat a meal at a fancy place, full of elaborate place settings, fine porcelain, served by waiters wearing tuxedos with soft classical music playing, the food is going to taste different than if we ate the same food in a diner blaring pop music. The latest research now shows that by playing the “right” music, one can also impact specific sensory-discriminative aspects of tasting as well. Simply put, music influences the perceived acidity, sweetness, fruitiness and astringency in a wine. In the latest study, Professor Adrian C. North of Edinburgh, Scotland, gave taste tests to 250 students, while playing music in the background. Students were put into groups and given either a red wine or a white wine. Each group listened to one of four songs. The four songs were characterized as follows: powerful and heavy, subtle and refined, 14 Island Events June 2020

mellow and soft or zingy and refreshing. The results showed that the music had a consistent effect on the participants’ perception of the wine. They tended to think their wine had the qualities of the music they were listening to. So, for example, both the red and white wines were given the highest ratings for being powerful and heavy by those participants who drank them to the powerful and heavy tune. The aromas and flavors of a Brut champagne paired with new age music offered an otherworldly experience. Californian winemaker and wine consultant Clark Smith set up his own studies involving over 150 wines and 250 songs. He summarizes his conclusions as follows: “Red wines need either minor key or they need music that has negative emotion. They don’t like happy music. With expensive reds, don’t play music that makes you giggle. Pinots like sexy music. Cabernets like angry music. It’s very hard to find a piece of music that’s good for both Pinot and Cabernet.” “Never play polkas with anything,” he says, unless you really like White Zinfandel. Open up a bottle, crank up the tunes and see if you agree. The perfect bottle of handcrafted artisan wine awaits at Island Winery on Cardinal Road. Tastings, wine by the glass and cheese platters are available MondaySaturday from 12:30-5:30 p.m. (843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com. hiltonhead.com

Alcohol:

Drinking/possession of alcohol on Hilton Head's public beaches is illegal and could result in a fine of up to $500. Liquor stores are not open on Sundays in South Carolina, though you can buy wine and beer in some gas stations and supermarkets.

Roundabouts:

You might as well learn to love South Carolina’s roundabouts. They’re everywhere! There are just a few rules to follow in the two-lane roundabout: • The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way. • Always yield to them before entering the roundabout. • A roundabout is like any other flowing traffic—don’t stop in the middle. • As annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it’s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait. • Like with intersections, don’t change lanes while in the roundabout.

Beaches:

There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is: • No sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m. • No driving on the beach • No horses on the beach • No fires on the beach • No fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on Hilton Head, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a $500 fine) • No pets on the beach between 10 a.m.5 p.m. the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic fireworks scheduled for June 16, 23 & 30

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips: • Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips: • Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions: The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming, or harassment of any hiltonhead.com

52nd RBC Heritage

Presented by Boeing at the Harbour Town Golf Links

Photo: RBC Heritage Facebook page

The 52nd RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing will be played June 18-21. The well-being of the Hilton Head Island community remains of utmost importance. Therefore, the tournament will be played without spectators or sponsors. The PGA TOUR, RBC and the Heritage Classic Foundation will continue to work directly with local, state and federal government agencies to ensure the health and safety of the select constituents. This, of course, applies to players and all of those allowed on the grounds during the RBC Heritage. “It has been a whirlwind of emotions over the past month,” Tournament Director Steve Wilmot said. “We’re excited and grateful for the opportunity to host the event we work so hard for every single year, and thank the PGA TOUR for trusting us with this decision. We’ll be ready to host the 52nd RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing. We hope the world tunes in to experience South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event.” “Hosting the tournament is an important tradition in South Carolina, and while this year will be different, we’re pleased with the PGA TOUR’s decision to include it on their revised schedule,” South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said. “Some may regret that it will be a broadcast-only event this year, but it’s the right decision for the safety of our people.” 38 Island Events June 2020

"We are pleased to see that tradition continue, balanced with the necessary precautions that are required to protect players, the community and those who support the tournament,” said Mary DePaoli, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, RBC. “We are proud to partner with the PGA TOUR and the Heritage Classic Foundation, and will work closely with our partners to see this world-class event come to life on broadcast.” “What an honor it would be to welcome the PGA TOUR back to Hilton Head Island in June. Golf fans may not be able to walk the gallery due to health precautions. But the fact that viewers will lay eyes on the RBC Heritage being played here is incredible news,” Hilton Head Island Mayor John McCann said. “It’s a huge win for golf and for our community.” “We’ll give you a great tournament. It won’t be the same as other years, but I’d take this alternative any day,” said Wilmot. “The second-best thing to being at Harbour Town during the RBC Heritage is to watch it from the comfort of your homes, plaid outfits on and drinks in hand!” For information call (843) 671-2448 or visit rbcheritage.com. RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

RULES FOR THE ROAD: • Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Please do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. • Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway. 40 Island Events June 2020

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. • Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the paths. Be courteous, alert and predictable.

By Kathleen McMenamin Vicars, Master Naturalist owcountry marshes are vibrant places in spring and summer. The beautiful bubbly song of the Marsh Wren adds to the majestic nature of our environment. Keep an eye — and an ear — out for these abundant small marsh birds. Marsh Wrens, Cistothorus palustris, are small brown-and-yellow birds with thin bills, a dark cap and white eye lines that tend to hold their tails upright, much like the common Carolina Wren. Weighing up to .5 ounces and growing up to five inches long, they make short flights throughout our Lowcountry marshes, but are more commonly seen jumping through the grass tips, as they maintain their territory and care for their young. Spread throughout most of North America, Marsh Wrens are usually found in freshwater, saltwater and brackish marshes. Considered migratory throughout the majority of the United States, they can be found in our area year-round. Marsh Wrens are most notable from March to August, due to their high frequency of vocalizations, which coincides with their breeding season. Although still in our area during the fall and winter months, they are much less noticeable. These small birds are very active foragers. Their main diet consists of insects of all kinds, including larvae, spiders and snails. They forage in dense growths of spartina grass (marsh grass) for insects that cling to the stalks, and also catch prey in the air with short, fast flights over the surface of the water. At the beginning of the breeding season, a male declares his territory through song. He then continues to defend his territory by singing at rival males. To lower the competition, males poke holes in the eggs of other wrens, as well as other varietal bird species. Within his territory, a male may build up to 20 different nests — oval-shaped baskets made out of dead wet grasses, woven into 56 Island Events June 2020

the tops of the marsh grass. These nests usually have a side-door entrance for camouflage and efficiency. Very few of the nests will be used to rear young, but often stand as decoys for predators, or used by adults during non-nesting seasons. A male wren sings to entice females into his territory. Marsh Wrens are not monogamous and may have two or more partners at a time. Upon a female’s arrival, the male will show her each of the nests within his range. A female chooses a male after accessing his territory, nests and the competition of other females. She then selects her favorite nest and lines it with grass, plant down and feathers. After laying four to five brown-speckled eggs, the female incubates the eggs for up to 16 days. Once hatched, both parents forage to feed the young. After another 16 days, the newly hatched chicks leave the nest. A single female will have up to two broods a year. Marsh Wren numbers have been increasing since 1966. They are considered a species of little concern, other than within the state of Michigan. They can be highly affected by habitat destruction due to pollution or construction. Maintaining marsh habitats is vital for their survival and these birds will happily inhabit restored wetlands. REEL Sport By Capt. Miles Altman, Bayrunner Fishing Charters

The large chunk of fresh-cut bait had scarcely touched bottom when the fish inhaled it and took off! As quickly as I moved the drag to the strike setting, the hefty rod bent double and went under the boat. “Big brown, big brown!” my brother Don hollered, as the fish took to the air behind me. I could hear the large splash but was too busy bent over the side with the rod in the water, trying to keep old big brown from rubbing the line against the hull and breaking off. Don tilted the engine as I worked the fish back to my side of the boat and, after a few tense minutes of seesaw action between the line and the transducer, she was free once more. As I handed the rod to my son Caleb, the fish broke water again. The fish surged, taking line freely, and I held on to 10-year-old Caleb. It weighed at least half as much as my son, who groaned because of the strong pull of the fish. Slowly we worked the cobia back to the boat after 10 minutes of back and forth, but when the fish saw the boat, the line peeled off the reel again, despite Caleb’s protests. Cobia are large battlers that move into our sounds to spawn in May and June. Averaging between 15 to 85 pounds, these fish offer the inshore angler “reel” sport! Usually by midJune, they dwindle in size and the new spawn sporting racing stripes are well under the minimum 36-inch size. While the cobia action wanes by mid-June, there are many other exciting species to be caught now. Near offshore on the reefs and in the creeks, the sheepshead are biting. Also biting are Spanish mackerel and bluefish off the sandbars close to the beach. The action is usually fast and furious when you encounter school fish. In the same areas, large jack crevalle can be found, along with an occa58 Island Events June 2020

sional bull redfish. Patrolling the bait and Spanish mackerel schools, you never know where the big brother of the Spanish, the king mackerel, may be lurking. Weighing between 15 and 60 pounds, this royalty puts up an exciting battle. Last, but hardly least, the real June crowd pleasers, especially with the younger generation, are the sharks. We have many species of shark here: bulls, blacktips, duskies, scalloped or bonnet heads, sand, reef, sharp nose and more. Most of these sharks will be in the four- to five-foot range, but there are larger ones to be had. Charters are available to go offshore for the massive tiger sharks, often 12 feet or larger! The smaller ones can be caught on short trips and offer lots of regular action, a priority for younger anglers. Sharks make for great vacation memories and, most of all, the kids love them! take you on a tour of the winding trails and open vistas of the salt marsh. Your guide will give you an overview of the plant and animal species in the area, as well as interpreting the tides and winds to give you the best possible trip. If you are kayaking with kids, a tour has the added benefit of the guide providing entertainment throughout the expedition. If you are an experienced paddler and would like to go out on your own, rent some kayaks and plan ahead. The tides in our area vary from 7 to 10 feet, making it crucial to know the tides before going kayaking. While paddling against the tide is not difficult, going against the strongest tide for the whole trip isn’t that enjoyable. If you plan to paddle with kids, choose the easiest possible route based on the tides.

he marshes surrounding Hilton Head are a lush wilderness, ideal for exploring by kayak. For thousands of years, small boats have been used to connect these coastal islands for the purposes of trade, family and culture. The modern kayak continues the longstanding Lowcountry tradition of the personal watercraft. If you do one thing while visiting our Island, get on the water in a kayak. Kayaking is a true family sport. It is fun and easy enough for children and seniors, but complex enough to engage serious enthusiasts. Our ideal weather and temperate climate make the Lowcountry the perfect place for beginners to learn kayaking. For your first time out, employ a knowledgeable guide to

60 Island Events June 2020

Look up the tide chart in this magazine or online at hiltonheadisland.com/beaches/ tides. This site lets you pick from many local waterways. For your first time out, plan to split the low or high tide. If you want to be out for two hours, leave an hour before low or high tide. For example: if the high tide at Broad Creek is at 7:24 a.m. on June 1, leave at 6:24 a.m. and return at 8:24 a.m. The times of high and low tide vary every day, so remember to check the tide tables! You will also want to check the weather before heading out. Technology has made this an easy task. Remember, weather predictions get more accurate closer to the day of the prediction. Also note, wind is a not always your friend. If it is blowing 10 mph or above, expect it to be a bit difficult paddling in one direction; 15 mph and above, be cautious; at 20 mph and above, you probably shouldn’t go out. Check the weather right before you go, to be sure there are no pop-up storms, which are common in the spring and summer. Again, if kayaking with kids, err on the side of caution for the best possible experience. For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Head has provided personalized adventures for all ages, from kayak, fishing, nature and dolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excursions, family outings and standup paddleboarding. Kids on the Course

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

Golf is fun and there is no better time to learn than now. Here are just a few benefits of getting kids out on the course this summer: GOLF IS FUN AND EDUCATIONAL

Fresh air, friends and fairways mean FUN. Many kids talk about the biggest yard they have ever seen while riding in the golf cart through the woods, and others are in awe of the deer meandering nearby. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are all involved in learning golf. Kids soon become teachable, and as they experience both success and failure in the game of golf, their coach guides them to victory. Golf is invigorating — hitting that great shot is thrilling, uplifting and mind-blowing, especially to a small child that may wonder how he/she made the ball go so far! Golf promotes self-reliance, nurtured through good coaching, which inspires perseverance and confidence. Also, a golf coach teaches kids how to be on the alert, by explaining the safety policies daily. A nurturing and fun coach keeps the atmosphere light and interesting. Your child will enjoy age-appropriate equipment, videos and fun training aids, all included with the cost of the lesson.

FUNDAMENTALS FOR KIDS

It is a proud moment for a parent when a child plays their first song on an instrument, and golf is no different. How proud a parent is when a child learns the grip, stance, posture, alignment and what a golf swing feels like! We have the teaching tools to make this fun and easy. Friendly terms like alligator arms, hot dog in the bun and salute the general will become a part of your child’s vocabulary. 62 Island Events June 2020

BEST WAYS TO GET KIDS ON THE COURSE

• Make your child’s golf adventures brief with 1-hour lessons, and a lighthearted practice time with a parent or friend afterward. • Invite a friend for company while your child takes a lesson. • Carpooling parents can share transportation responsibilities. • Brief visits to the practice area keep the learning process fresh and updated.

TIPS FOR GOLF COACHES AND PARENTS

1. Do not link self-worth and self-esteem to score. 2. Provide unconditional love to your golfer. 3. Develop the whole person, not just the golfer. 4. Let them be kids! 5. Focus on developing skills, and outcomes will happen naturally. 6. FUN must be included. 7. If you put too much pressure on them when you watch, or it’s too stressful to watch, don’t watch! Drop them off and let them play golf. For opportunities to get kids on the course, contact: Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy: (843) 785-1138 or First Tee of the Lowcountry: (843) 686-2680. A Day on the Water (continued)

LAUNCH & LAND

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and eco-tours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candystriped lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

MAKE A SPLASH

Jump on a jet ski or waverunner and whiz across the water on an adventure around the Island, or try tubing, wake72 Island Events June 2020

boarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding and skurfing with a USCG-certified captain. It’s fast, fun and a sure way to keep your cool on sizzling summer days.

GET ON BOARD

The sport of choice for ancient Hawaiians and modern Hollywood hipsters, standup paddleboarding (SUP) is making waves in the Lowcountry. Easy to learn and a great workout, take a few lessons before heading out for a yoga class, nature tour, moonlight paddle, fireworks trip or race. Of course, thrill seekers can still catch waves on traditional surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards.

SET SAIL

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, battle pirates on a swashbuckling adventure, catch the seasonal

fireworks displays from the water, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat and play your way.

PADDLE AWAY

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments, or your fishing pole to catch a delicious dinner.

GO WILD

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Depart on a dolphin-watching trip, shark-fishing excursion, alligator adventure, turtle talk and walk or birdwatching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants. hiltonhead.com

FLY HIGH

Soar hundreds of feet above the water on a parasailing trip, get a bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge.

REEL FUN

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots, drop a line from a kayak or into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing to see what you can catch.

HIT THE BEACH

The Island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand. June 2020 Island Events 73
