Spanish moss adds character to the trees all over Daufuskie Island. Visitors and natives alike see the moss hanging from the trees as beautiful. Not only was it plentiful when I was a child, it was also useful in many things that we did. Like many islanders, Pop and Momma believed in doing all sorts of things for comfort. During my parents’ younger days, Spanish moss was used for stuffing mattresses and pillows. We fed our cows and horses the Spanish moss. It was also said to be good for treating high blood pressure. They allowed the moss to stay in their shoes until it was dry, then removed it and repeated the process. Folks somehow knew when the green Spanish moss had helped lower their blood pressure. I never understood how the Spanish moss helped, but it worked for island folks. It was their belief and nature’s way. For them it worked, and that was all that mattered. “Rice Coast” were brought to the Lowcountry to work in the rice and cotton fields. The landscape was hot, remote and teeming with mosquitos. Physically and culturally isolated, the workers were left to live, worship, speak and cook as they wished. They became known as the Gullah, and they created their own cuisine and language, holding tight to treasured West African skills and traditions.

GULLAH Culture

Did You Know? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his “I Have a Dream” speech among the Gullah on St. Helena Island, SC. The 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, about three generations of Gullah women, was the first feature directed by an African American woman to have a general U.S. theatrical release. Hilton Head Island’s Gullah community in Mitchelville passed the country’s first law requiring universal schooling. Pat Conroy’s novel, The Water is Wide, fictionalized the Gullah community on Daufuskie Island, SC.

T

here is something both familiar and exotic about the Lowcountry. For those looking to unlock its mysteries, understanding the Gullah culture in South Carolina may just be the key. In the late 1600s, rice was desired all over the world. Enslaved Africans from West Africa’s 18 Island Events January-February 2024

Gullah cuisine grew out of the resourcefulness of enslaved African women, who applied European and African cooking methods and flavors to locally available foods, including fish, shrimp, oysters, crabs and crops native to the Americas such as tomatoes, corn and squash. Peanuts, watermelon, yams, okra and collard greens were imported from Africa. Quintessential Gullah dishes include fried fish, stewed shrimp and hoppin’ john. In fact, many classic “Southern” dishes came straight from Gullah kitchens. An English-based hybrid, the Gullah language includes nearly 4,000 African words. Gullah is still in use today, especially in storytelling. Spoken, chanted or sung, Gullah stories are proudly passed from one generation to the next. The Gullah also craft beautiful coiled baskets handwoven from sweetgrass and palmetto fronds. Other Gullah traditions include the making of cast nets and the singing of lively spirituals, music that influenced American jazz, blues and gospel traditions. Today, America’s Gullah population is estimated at approximately 300,000. However, because up to 70 percent of enslaved Africans landed in the Lowcountry, many more African Americans have Gullah roots. The history of the Gullah people is one of adaptation, survival and community — and the story of the Lowcountry is incomplete without the Gullah experience. hiltonhead.com

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you. 34 Island Events January-February 2024

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths. • Be courteous, alert and predictable. • WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic. • WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists. • YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right. • SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. • At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map. • Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other. hiltonhead.com

Hammer Time!

The Pileated Woodpecker uses its head for success. By Anthony R. Savarese

I

t is a unique bird that takes your breath away every time, even if viewed in its natural habitat for only a moment. The Pileated Woodpecker is unmistakable. “Pileated” refers to the bird’s prominent red crest, from the Latin pileatus, meaning “capped.” Its iconic tuft of red hair adorning its crown and fiery red, almost Mohawk-like, feathers extending from the crown to the base of the neck and white slashes of feathers on its face. Many times, instead of seeing the Pileated Woodpecker, visitors of Hilton Head hear the bird hammering away at trees looking for beetles, grubs and various other insects which make up its primary diet. The flight pattern of the Pileated Woodpecker is as unique as the bird itself. It dips through the air in hill-shaped patterns, climaxing at a high peak, then gliding downward before renewing its ascent on the way to its destination. Depending on the time of the year, and the population of the species, their nests may be seen in the hardwood trees. Pileated Woodpeckers hollow out humble abodes in trees. They chip away at trees, crafting impressive rectangular holes in search of insects, particularly ant colonies. These remarkable birds even extend their long tongues into crevices to scoop up ants. While they exude confidence on the towering trunks of massive trees, they may appear a bit clumsy when feasting on tiny branches and vines. These birds make such nice homes that other animals such as raccoons, rodents and various birds sometimes try to adopt their hollows and make them their own.

36 Island Events January-February 2024

Pileated woodpecker pairs are one of the few species that stay together on their territory all year round and do not migrate. Both parents incubate three to five eggs for 12 to 16 days. They defend their territory throughout the seasons but are more tolerant of other woodpeckers this time of the year. When interacting with other pileated woodpeckers, they engage in intense activities such as chasing, calling, striking with their wings, and jabbing with their bill. But that’s not all, drumming is also a common behavior during courtship and to establish their territory. They use hollow trees to create this unique rolling sound that lasts about three seconds. Whether you are an experienced bird watcher or a family looking for a fun and educational outdoor adventure, Hilton Head Island offers a rich variety of birds and other wildlife. Fish Are Biting

On Hilton Head By Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters

“L

ight north wind, and seas less than a foot,” my brother Don said. “I have plenty of fiddlers. You want to go?” Silly question. Sheepshead is definitely in my top-three favorite fish to catch. These sneaky bandits offer a great challenge. Just getting a hook set is tricky, and the battle is always satisfying, especially with a fish over five pounds. When it comes to table fare, they don’t call them “river snapper” for nothing. Visions of fried sheepshead with grits and eggs over easy danced through my head. I met Don at 6:30 the following chilly morning, and we put the boat in just as the sun broke over the horizon. Good memories floated through my freezing brain. The 38-degree morning, coupled with a 30 mph cruising speed, had my teeth chattering. Thankfully, after a half-hour, we arrived at the reef and had it all to ourselves. Studying the depth finder for the structure that had been so productive the weekend before, we marveled at the calmness of the ocean. It was a pictureperfect day with flat seas, as Don’s fishing buddy Von manned the anchor. Structure found and anchor set, we pulled out the fiddlers and baited hooks. With eager anticipation, I waited for the telltale slack in the line that signaled the bait had reached the structure some 40 feet below. 50 Island Events January-February 2024

Reeling the fish finder rig up just until there was tension on the line, I focused intently on the rod tip. You see, with these bandits, the slightest tap (unperceived at times, if you’re not watching closely) is all you get before you’re fishing on credit. After thinning out the obligatory black sea bass (always an inch short of legal size), I finally drew first blood on the black-and-white striped target. Not a huge fish, but a sheepie nonetheless. It wouldn’t be too long, however, ‘til a nice fivepounder was on. With rod doubled and drag protesting, the battle was on. A few minutes later, Von slid the net

under my catch, and I proclaimed, “big fish.” Don soon caught a big fish, which would turn out to be a red drum. Several bruising battles with black drum ensued, and I smiled thinking I had the winner in the clubhouse. Pride goeth before a fall, however, as Von’s rod bent double. After a hardfought battle, I slid the net under his fish, which was obviously bigger than mine. Fourteen sheepshead later, we headed home. Another great day of bandit fishing! GOLF:

The Equal Opportunity Sport How three Winter Sports can improve your Golf Game

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy

G

olf has long been my sport of choice. It’s a game to be enjoyed playfully and it will entertain and make us healthier when played correctly. But it’s also a game that requires multiple skills; skills that can be learned through some of the most popular Winter Sports.

Snow skiing — Snow skiing, like golf, is a sport you can enjoy at any age or level of health. You don’t have to be strong to ski down the slope, gravity does the work. It’s footwork fundamentals that help build speed, accuracy and control. If skiers initiate action from the upper body instead of solid grounding, that control goes away. The golf swing is also built from the ground up. Golfers often struggle because they try to control the club with their hands and arms instead of from solid footing.

Basketball — NBA star Steph Curry loves to play golf. As a kid his dad taught him to use superior footwork to outplay his opponents on the basketball court. His feet do the hard work and leave his hands free to use a soft grip and light pressure on the ball. It means he can maneuver and quickly release the ball before a defender can attack. In my 30 years coaching and 55 years loving golf 52 Island Events January-February 2024

I’ve learned it’s those same skills Curry learned early on the basketball court (solid, powerful footwork and a light, relaxed grip) that work the best on the golf course.

Hockey — Ice hockey and golf are as similar as they are different. In both, the mastery and speed of the shot is all about simple physics. Hockey players use a stick shaped like a golf club. But the two instruments are weighted in reverse; the hockey stick has a light head and heavy shaft, the golf club has a heavy head and a light shaft. The advanced golfer lets the heavy clubhead drop and feels the force naturally accumulate at impact for an effortless fast swing. The hockey player uses the force of muscle to push the stick and slap the puck with speed to achieve their desired shot. Carolina’s PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Monday from 4-5 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call (866) 455-6890 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information. hiltonhead.com

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or birdwatching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Paddle Time

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.

Have you ever seen Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin in the wild? Don't miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you'll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a family-friendly way to spend the day out on the water and to see these incredible mammals in action.

nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.

Beach Marker Signs:

Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.

Beach Safety Tips:

• Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun. • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. • Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses. • Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her. • Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance. • There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention. • Call or wave for help if you are in trouble. hiltonhead.com

Water Safety Tips:

• Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim. • Swim near a lifeguard. • Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag. • Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost. • Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas. • Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed. • Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head. • Don’t rely on flotation devices. • Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances. • Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull. • Always swim sober. • Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

Beach Prohibitions:

The following are prohibited on all beaches: – Possession or consumption of alcohol – Glass (bottles, containers, etc.) – Littering – Indecent exposure or nudity – Disorderly conduct – Disturbing the peace – Unauthorized vehicles – Fires and fireworks – Shark fishing – Horseback riding or motorized driving – Removal, harming or harassment of any hiltonhead.com
