The mighty Tarpon will make his appearance in July...

July is often referred to as the “dog days of summer,” but a better name might be “fish days of summer.” Hot weather is the rule throughout the South and Hilton Head Island is no exception. But with heat comes warmer water and the fishing heats up, as well. The inshore waters close to Hilton Head Island are especially abundant with Redfish, Jack Crevalle, large and small sharks and more. The mighty Tarpon will make his appearance in July, arriving when the water temperature is in the eighties. The nearshore rips, reefs and live bottoms are teaming with Spanish and King Mackerel and Bluefish. Offshore, it's a great time to find dolphin (Mahi Mahi), Sailfish, Wahoo and perhaps a Marlin. Elaborate fishing rigs are not required to catch many of the fish in our area. Trolling 116 ISLAND EVENTS JULY 2011

spoons on a lead or planer is one the most productive methods to make the catch. The mornings are usually calm with a cooling “sea breeze” kicking up in the afternoons. And when the fishing is this hot, who minds a little extra heat? The experts at Blue Water Tackleshop in South Beach Marina have a full charter fleet with experienced captains who know where the fish are. South Beach Marina is the closest marina to the ocean, which means more fishing & less traveling! (843) 671-3060 or bluewaterhhi.com. hiltonhead.com
