Established in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers hands-on exploration of the Lowcountry‘s diverse cultural heritage and complex natural history with an array of programs, presentations, exhibits and tours for all ages. The last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007. Comprising 68 acres of salt marsh and maritime forests, centuries-old live oaks, open fields and a dozen historic structures, Honey Horn is located at the intersection of Hwy. 278 and the Cross Island Expressway. Over its 300-year history, Honey Horn has been home to Indian tribes, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations, Gullah families who hunted and farmed the land, a hunt club established by northern busi nessmen and, starting in 1950, Fred Hack’s private residence and farm. Construction of the 6,000-sq.-ft. hunting lodge began in 1859 and, today, is known as the Discovery House, complete with permanent and temporary exhibits, a Kids Zone and gift shop. Self-guided tours of the property via salt marsh boardwalks and an oyster shell trail include the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Habitat, a Lowcountry Heritage Garden and a Camellia Garden. Guided History/ Nature Walks & Talks, live animal programs and seasonal kids camps are offered on a regular basis. Offsite tours and programs include the Forts of Port Royal, Beach Discovery and much more. This historic property is also avail able to rent for wedding receptions, 10
corporate events and is home to some of the Island’s annual festivals.

LOWCOUNTRY CRITTERS “MEET AND GREET” Wednesdays & Fridays, 10 a.m.2 p.m.: Don’t miss this casual “Meet and Greet” to learn more about the alligators, snakes and other critters that share Hilton Head Island with us. Joe Maffo, owner and founder of Critter Management, will bring along some of his “friends” to share with everyone. Take this opportunity to walk-in and see these animals up close, take a picture and learn more about them. Cost is $10 per adult, $5 per child. No charge for children under 5. Reservations are not required. BIRDING AT PINCKNEY ISLAND Select Wednesdays & Thursdays, 7:30 a.m.: An experienced bird watcher guides participants on this walking tour of Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. With a combination of natural habitats including salt marsh, maritime forest and open fields, this site allows participants to see many different species of birds. Depending on the season, diverse birds can be spotted: Summer Tanager, Eastern Kingbird, Painted Bunting, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Egrets, Herons and many, many others. Meets at Pinckney Island. Good walking shoes are suggested and bring your binoculars. Cost is $12 per person and you must be 12 years of age to participate. Of course, they are wild animals, so we can’t guarantee to see them on every tour we do, but we are located in one of their favorite feeding spots, so our percentage of seeing them might just be the highest on the Island! Blackbeard, 5 Nick and little baby Stripes are a few of our favorite dolphins. For over 15 years, Kayak Hilton Head has been teaching visitors all about the dolphins, birds, oysters, salt marsh and many, many other interesting things about our Island. ANIMALS
Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin
Local waters host a large, year-round population of these playful, airbreathing mammals. The South Carolina Lowcountry is also one of the few places to witness strand feeding–a learned behavior where dolphins work as a team to corral fish, chase them onto a muddy bank and then temporarily beach themselves to eat their catch.
Marsh Tacky
Once the most common horse found in the Southeast, this Colonial Spanish breed is uniquely adapted for survival in swampy terrain. On the Sea Islands, Gullah families used them for transportation, hunting and farming. Today, fewer than 400 of these small, gentle horses exist.
Alligator
Keep your distance from these feder ally-protected, prehistoric reptiles often seen sunning themselves on the banks of lagoons. It is illegal to feed these cold-blooded animals and, although they may look listless

and slow, they can outrun humans over short distances.
Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Every summer, dozens of female log gerhead sea turtles travel thousands of miles to Hilton Head Island, return ing to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched two or three decades earlier. It is a federal offense to harass these ancient reptiles which can weigh up to 300 pounds.
Green Anole
Common in South Carolina and Georgia, this lizard is called a chameleon for its ability to change color. The only anole species native to the United States, males have a pink throat fan they display when protecting their territory or finding a mate.
Southeastern Five-Lined Skink
Named for the five white or yellowish stripes running down their backs, these moderately large lizards eat a variety of insects and spiders. Like many other lizards, their tails will break off if attacked, but it is only a myth that they are venomous.

All of the refuge’s archeological and natural resources are protected. Antique and artifact hunting are not allowed. Do not pick or cut vegetation. Dogs, cats and other pets are not permitted on the refuge. Some areas may be closed seasonally to protect wildlife from human disturbance. Such areas are posted “Area Beyond this Sign Closed.”
Safety Reminders: Established in 1975, Pinckney Island is a 4,053-acre wildlife refuge located just off Highway 278, a 1/2-mile west of Hilton Head Island.
Drinking water and restrooms are not available on the island.
Hiking/Biking Trips:
The graveled road from the parking area to Clubhouse Pond is well maintained, but in the summer, overgrowth on the grass trails may conceal snakes, poison ivy, or stinging insects. An occasional alligator may be encountered near any pond or on the adjacent trails. Do not molest this reptile in any way. Hikers are urged to stay on the paths at all times. No offroad or off-trail biking is permitted.

ith five miles of pristine beach, an historic lighthouse, a visitor center, a nature center, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet, fishing pier, trails through acres of marsh and maritime forests and oceanfront camping, Hunting Island State Park attracts more than a million visitors each year.
South Carolina’s most popular state park was forever changed after Hurricane Matthew hit last October. The Category 2 storm caused more than $5 million in damages, wiping out the dunes and oceanfront camp sites, destroying roads, restrooms and parking lots. With the exception of the Nature Center, Hunting Island had remained closed to the public until early June when South Beach, North Beach, the Lighthouse Gift Shop, the Lagoon, most park trails and a portion of the pier re-opened, although fishing and crabbing are not allowed at this time. The campground is expected to re-open in early August. South Carolina’s only publicly-accessible lighthouse was originally built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 following its destruction during the Civil War. In 1889, it was dismantled and relocated a mile inland due to severe beach erosion. Later, the lighthouse underwent 18 months of repairs beginning in 2003 to reinforce the 167 black cast iron stairs. The Nature Center on the south end of the island features live reptiles and exhibits highlighting the park’s natural resources, as well as special programming throughout the year, including beach walks, fish printing, alligator talks and lighthouse interpretive tours.

Savannah’s Famous Ghosts We’ve all heard the saying “if walls could talk,” but in Savannah, they don’t need to thanks to the bold spirits which wander the historic halls and scenic streets. Hear these eerie tales firsthand from the famous ghosts that make Georgia’s First City one of America’s most haunted. 1. Toby at Moon River Brewing Co. This brewery’s sinister reputation can be traced back to one mischievous ghost. Toby, named by staff, likes to hang in the billiard room with customers, and has been known to shove them and knock their drinks down when they get in his way. Although he hasn’t been linked back to a specific historic figure, he’s made a definite impact beyond the grave. So much so, they’ve created a beer called “Apparition Ale” dedicated to Toby. 2. Broken-Hearted Anna Said to be one of Savannah’s oldest inns, 17Hundred90 Inn & Restaurant is home to the ghost of Anna Powers, who lived there in the late 18th century. At that time, the inn was owned by her father and rented out to sailors passing through. One sailor caught Anna’s eye, and the two fell in love, but their affair ended quickly. After one nasty fight, Anna
jumped out of the second-floor window to her death. Brokenhearted, she still haunts the building, particularly in Room 204, her former bedroom. Anna likes to switch the lights and fireplace on and off, and lock and unlock the doors. 3. Maître D’ James Habersham Jr. Most of Savannah’s ghosts are sticklers for order and tidiness, and James Habersham Jr. is one such spirit. James spent nearly two decades constructing The Olde Pink House to perfection. Sadly, he ended his life after only 10 years of living there. Said to have died to be with his wife who had passed a couple of years before, James’ soul still walks the halls of his former house. Now a restaurant on haunted Reynolds Square, guests of The Olde Pink House have spotted his apparition straightening tablecloths and utensils, cleaning server stations, and pushing in chairs that have been left out.

4. The Davenport Feline The Isaiah Davenport House is a popular stop when visiting Savannah, and it was just as popular when first built. At times, the house had hosted up to 11 different families. This home’s most famous spirit strolls on four legs. The Davenport cat has been described as a tabby that staff has seen dashing between the different rooms in the house. This friendly feline has been known to capture human hearts by brushing up against their legs and asking for a caress or two. 5. Lady in Gray The stunning Owens-Thomas House is considered one of the most beautiful historic homes in Savannah. While touring the house, it’s evident it was well used and loved, probably due to the spirit of the Lady in Gray who still lives in it. The Lady in Gray is Margaret Thomas, who inherited the house from her grandfather, George Owens.
Margaret poured her love into the house and its gardens.
