From Belinda Hello Readers! Welcome to Issue 95. Lowlife’s have dumped construction waste on the edges of Buckley’s Hole Conservation Park. Some of the waste is asbestos, the cost for the necessary work to remove it is astronomical. Bribie bridge is celebrating it’s 60th anniversary this month. Sheree Hoddinett has written a lovely article about the bridge and its purpose. Andrew Powell talks about Queensland being the crime capital of Australia. Annie Lane’s Candice Kiss won the Australian Women’s Small Business Champion Award. Alistair Gray talks about some of the major projects happening in the area. Our feature article is all about a local business called Spring Sciences Australia. A local facility growing a top medical cannabinoid product line for domestic and international markets.

Sheree has also written a very helpful article about finding the best way to deal with cyberbullying.

Sandstone Point Hotel Community Meeting I attended the community meeting called by Mr Rob Comiskey, held at SPH to explain the reason for the requested change in the licensing of the stage used for major concerts. Approximately 70 people attended. The meeting was well run. It seems that the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation are attempting to wash their hands of regulating the noise and affect on neighbours of these major concerts. This responsibility is their job. If taken out of their control, I understand this will become the responsibility of our council. That is the council which oversaw the zoning change to this large tract of open space on the shores of the Pumicestone Passage, which enabled a hotel to be built in the first place. This council gave approval for developments in this area for a hotel, six storey accommodation block, retail precinct, BIG4 caravan park, resort and stage for rock concerts. In a residential area, on a twolane road, the only access to Bribie Island. On land that the “locals” were advised “would never be re-zoned”. Why should the local residents and ratepayers – those whose job it is the council to protect – feel comfortable about this change. F Park Sandstone Point

But the question remains, why do we need to amend our constitution? We could do it via parliamentary amendment and/or basic legislation. If we amend our constitution it will be almost impossible once/if we decide we don’t like it. We even have many Aboriginal groups who disagree with the proposal and would prefer something else. THEY indeed suggest we vote NO! We have many legal minds arguing against it. Perhaps we need to find out where the previous $billions have gone, to whom and how they were acquitted before spending more?

Voice of Division and Race! I always enjoy the letters from the ‘Yes’ voters for the upcoming referendum. They never explain anything, how can they, even the PM can’t. Then again, he only read the first page summary. We don’t know who will be appointed to this body, how they will be appointed, what powers it may have, what are its parameters, etc. I guess people arguing if you don’t know you should vote NO, has some logic to it. How can we vote for something even its proponents don’t fully understand, administratively, legally or constitutionally? Their main argument seems to be vitriol and attack.

As usual, we cover a wide variety of local issues, while showcasing our local businesses. It is our local businesses who make this publication possible, so please support them.

The views expressed in Letters to the Editor are not necessarily those of the editor or publishers of the newspaper.

To put it simply, you are voting for one basic thing – do you want to change the constitution (for some ill-defined concept that no one seems to be able to define) or not? If not and you have no idea what it is all about, the sensible path would be to vote NO! M Matthews Bribie Island

We didn’t start the fire…

of natural disasters, not only in Australia but globally. From the fires in California to wildfires that spread across Greece, the impact of the altered environment is continuing to take extreme tolls on all areas of our ecology. Not only are we, as humans impacted, but animal habitats alongside flora and fauna are impacted by these fires, with some endangered species not able to recover. In the short term, in preparation, there is much that can be done to prepare for the fire season. From developing a fire plan, ensuring gutters are clean and supporting local CFS, all these actions can assist in preparing for summer. However, what about in the long term? Supporting charities and environment-based groups is vital to helping those impacted by the fires. Environmental charities and organisations assist in protecting animals that become injured by bushfires across the country. The biggest issue in relation to these extreme bushfires remains the impact of climate change. Australia has always experienced bushfires, however their frequency and intensity is becoming a prevalent issue. Supporting bigger climate action is crucial, not only to assist in mitigating these natural disasters, but also to protect our environment as a whole. So, what can be done? Education and discussion is always an important step, as not everyone understands the link between climate change and an increase in severe bushfires. Talking to local environmental groups, organisations and council about plans for climate action within your local area is also incredibly important. Equally as important is recognising and holding accountable those who contribute to the climate crisis on a major scale, such as global corporations, fuel and oil companies and governments, all of whom prioritise profit over preservation and protection. We did not start these fires, but we will continue to be impacted by their destruction and devastation if we do not support and become the voices demanding better climate action.

Amelia Strazdins The days are getting longer, summer is getting closer by the minute and the temperatures are rising - perhaps a little too high. Summer season in Australia has always been hot, humid and as a country we are not strangers to bushfires. However, in recent years the combination of increasingly rising temperatures alongside more frequent and extreme natural disasters has created a growing threat. For some, the devastation and damage caused by the 2020 bushfires still remains a very real and painful part of their lives. The fires that burned across the country at the start of 2020 were on an extreme level that many Australians had not witnessed before. Many Australians and the rest of the world, watched scenes that could only be described as dystopian. However, as climate change worsens and temperatures rise, these dystopian scenes may become common place if increased climate action is not taken. This year, the threat of bushfires remains more prevalent than ever with reports that Australia is set to experience an El Niño summer, meaning a significantly reduced chance of rain and as a result drier environments. Hotter spring weather has already resulted in bushfires in both Victoria and New South Wales. What is causing more frequent, more extreme natural disasters such as these? Climate change. A prominent contributing factor to the extremity of these fires can be linked to a rising global temperature and the impact this has on weather phenomena. Changing climates and temperatures have impacted the frequency and seriousness

Second chance for Again ‘n’ Again By Sheree Hoddinett

Where there’s a will, there’s most definitely a way. They came close to shutting for good, but Again ‘n’ Again Second Hand Shop secured a new spot and the opportunity to continue bringing their goodwill to the Bribie community.

Again ‘n’ Again Second Hand Shop is run by Sharon and Jesse. Again ‘n’ Again Second Hand Shop is all about helping victims of domestic violence and children in need and is run by Sharon Longford and her son-in-law Jesse. It’s only been going for six months, but in that short space of time has become popular within the local community and beyond, reaching as far as Gympie, Warwick and other places. “We have a huge team of family and friends working with us to achieve our goal of helping our community,” Sharon said. “I named it Again ‘n’ Again as when I went through stage three cancer I kept fighting again and again for myself and my family. “I’m extremely passionate about making this shop work, so by just getting the word out there about domestic violence, it makes people aware and to reach out.” After making the announcement they were going to have to close their shop, the Again ‘n’ Again team were over the moon to let everyone know things had changed and they were set to open in a new location. “We came extremely close to closing down, it was incredibly heartbreaking and there were lots of tears,” Sharon said. “We put so much into this shop and we have helped so many people in such a short time. Our customers were also so upset. It was a great shop but the previous location was hard as not everyone could get there. “But with determination and making contact with a beautiful lady, we found our new shop. We have received so much support and love and wonderful reviews from all of our customers, we are so glad we get to continue this shop for everyone. It’s fabulous and it’s in a fantastic spot near the popular Bribie Island jetty and we have air conditioning. It’s a total blessing for us all.” With a lot of hard work and all hands-ondeck, Again ‘n’ Again Second Hand Shop opened in their new spot Shop 1/1 Toorbul Lane, Bongaree (orange building- next to Savige’s Seafood and the antique shop) in the last week of September. “It’s been a lot of hard work,” Sharon said of getting the space ready to open. “We had my nephew Matt offer (for free) to build a change room and storage room for the shop. He runs and owns Sawing Projects and we really appreciate everything he did for us. And my husband who runs Overall Painters also offered all the painting work for free. That’s what family is all about.” What is it about Again ‘n’ Again Second Hand Shop that makes it stand out? “Our old fashion manners and respect we have for all our customers,” Sharon said. “We always welcome everyone with a smile and are always here to help and assist when and where we can. “Our items are of good quality and great labels, but we keep all our prices low as we know how so many are struggling at the moment. We also offer for free, all our

Stand up Australia!

Proviso: At the time of writing this article, the outcome of the referendum was unknown. Due to print schedule, this article was requested early to meet the schedule. By the time readers read this article, the outcome of the referendum will be known. From Gecko’s point of view and many others, a resounding ‘No’ vote will mean commonsense has prevailed. If a ‘Yes’ vote succeeds, Australia will be divided by race. That means 3.8% of the population can determine outcomes that affect 96.2% of non-indigenous Australians. Sounds like apartheid, doesn’t it and nobody wants to go down that path. If adopted, the so-called Voice would entrench inequality of citizenship, negating the proud boast of Prime Minister Bob Hawke in 1988: “In Australia there is no hierarchy of descent; there must be no privilege of origin”. Obviously we were much smarter in 1988 than we are now. Regardless of the outcome, be it a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ result, Australia needs to address some issues which are changing the face of Australia and creating a wide divide between Indigenous Aboriginals and non-indigenous Australians. Here are a few issues that need to be rectified.

Gecko would hazard a guess that they did not know either. Are we dumbing down? Seems like it! Remember, all these claims by Aboriginals are being funded by the government - our taxpayers’ money! Here’s another one …. The court have denied Santos opening a new gas field north of Darwin, saying the company hadn’t consulted Dennis Tipakalippa, one of the traditional owners on the Tiwi Islands, more than 100km from the edge of the gas field, way over the horizon! The world became richer, safer and better fed when we listened to reason. Yet now we’re forced to submit to superstitions that will make us poorer and dumber. Concerned – well wait till the Voice gets to work.

Beware the Rainbow Serpent!

Accountability

Aboriginality

This topic has been raised in previous issues and there seems to be a proliferation of people identifying as Indigenous Aboriginals so that they can jump on the ‘lolly train of benefits’. It is about time something was done about claims of Aboriginality. Be it a DNA test or a percentage heritage or whatever, it seems there are a lot of fake ‘Aboriginals’ claiming Aboriginality. There are many examples where people claiming Aboriginality, are actually not even close to having Aboriginal heritage, a proven fact. So, why should a particular race of people have many more benefits than other races? Every Australian, Aboriginal

Indigenous and non-Aboriginal Australians should have to meet the same requirements to receive the same benefits. It is ridiculous to also think that someone with Aboriginal heritage of even less than 1% should not be challenged over their so-called Aboriginal distant heritage.

Treaties

Even before the outcome of the referendum, governments are making treaties with Aboriginal groups and this is having a detrimental effect on our lifestyle. Why are we going down this path of ‘treaties’? A treaty is usually between countries or sovereign states. You can see where this is going …. Indigenous Aboriginals consider that they are ‘First Nations’ people and have never ceded sovereignty, hence they want treaties. Reparations follow treaties. We have already seen what happens when Indigenous Aboriginals are given land rights, native title and treaties. We are being locked out of our own country. There are examples where the ordinary Australian is now locked out of some parts of our country because of Aboriginal rights. The Gecko thought that we were all Australians, be it Indigenous Aboriginals or non-Indigenous. The Gecko is a dinky-di Indigenous Australian, simply because he was hatched here and this is his country as well. Currently, Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islanders have formal recognition of 50% of Australia’s land mass. Huge areas of prime real estate in the Redlands Shire are under threat as a new landmark native title claim is being put to the courts. The claim could infer native title rights on about 3500 council owned or managed properties including a boy scouts hall, Redland Performing Arts Centre, a number of cemeteries, parks and popular scenic recreational areas in Wellington Point, Victoria Point and Cleveland Point. If this claim is successful, it means they will have the right to possess, occupy and use an area to the exclusion of all others. And Redlands is not the only place this is happening.

Beware the Rainbow Serpent!

The federal court has just shown how the race politics of our elites will make us more stupidly superstitious and a lot poorer and the Voice will make it worse. The court has stopped Woodside the gas giant, from doing seismic testing off Western Australia’s Northwest Cape 188km from the mainland, because Woodside had not consulted one woman, Raelene Cooper, who identifies as an Aboriginal woman. The court ruled Woodside had to consult with her as a traditional owner. I’m sorry but what?!! The site is 188km from the mainland in the ocean. Gecko did not know that Aboriginals were sea-faring people.

We know there are 3273 agencies for the sole purpose of providing a service to Aboriginals and there are 11 Indigenous Aboriginals in parliament. $39 billion per year has not fixed the plight of Aboriginals in need in many communities. How come? Will the Voice change that situation? If the current crop of Aboriginal agencies and Aboriginal members of parliament haven’t changed things, how will the Voice do it? The current NIAA has a number of functions: • to lead and co-ordinate Commonwealth policy development program design, implementation and service delivery for Aboriginal people. • to provide advice to the prime minister and minister for Indigenous Australians on whole-of-government priorities for Aboriginal people. Sounds like the Voice doesn’t it, so why the hell did we need a referendum! If the referendum favours the Voice, then Gecko suggests sacking the minister for Indigenous Australians and putting a red-hot poker through the 3237 Aboriginal agencies. An independent audit needs to examine core activities of each agency and all agencies holistically. A complete financial audit needs to occur to see where $39 billion has disappeared to without changing the plight of those Aboriginals in need and that includes sexual exploitation of children and domestic violence, which is still happening as you read this article. Plenty more to say, but the Editor won’t let me! And there ends Gecko Chirps rant …………. Goodbye and good luck!

Queensland the crime capital of Australia

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk recently announced that a new $250 million youth remand centre designed to hold 50 children will be “rapidly” built at Wacol. This will be alongside the youth detention centres planned for Woodford and Cairns, currently slated to open in 2026. Whilst there is no question the facility is needed (although the cost is eye-watering), let’s not forget why it’s needed. And nor should it be seen as the solution to the Youth Crime Crisis gripping all of Queensland, including Bribie Island and surrounds. How did we get here? Over eight years ago, the Palaszczuk Government watered down the Youth Justice Act. There were no consequences for actions and a cohort of young criminals was created. Since then, crime has been on the rise to the point it has now reached crisis levels. Newly released figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics sadly prove what we are all feeling, Queensland is officially the crime capital of Australia. In 2022, almost 200,000 Queenslanders were victims of crime. That’s 200,000 Queenslanders in one year – what a sad indictment on the Palaszczuk Labor Government. You are more likely to be robbed, have your home broken into, or your car stolen in Queensland than in any other part of Australia. At the same time there are fewer police officers now than two years ago. And this is costing you money. Insurance premiums in Queensland rose by 21% last year – the biggest jump in the country. According to Canstar, higher crime was a significant driver of this rise higher crime means more insurance claims, which leads to higher insurance premiums. The LNP lobbied and lobbied and lobbied the Palaszczuk to reintroduce “breach of bail” as an offence. After eight years of telling us they wouldn’t, they couldn’t, they did. It’s why, now, they need to “rapidly” build a youth remand centre at Wacol – so these kids don’t end up stuck in watch houses. But, again, don’t think that’s the end of the problem. When the judiciary comes to sentencing these young

criminals, they still come up against the principle of “detention as a last resort” in the Youth Justice Act. It’s that simple – the judges must consider detention as a last resort. Until we remove that principle from the act, we have effectively shackled the judiciary and created a revolving door for young offenders. Like “breach of bail”, the Palaszczuk Labor Government must listen to the LNP and to Queenslanders and agree to remove detention as a last resort in sentencing. But the current youth justice system is failing at both ends of the spectrum. The Palaszczuk Government have created a cohort of kids for who detention is necessary. But we must stop future generations of young people, of children, heading down the same path.

Clean up at Buckley’s Hole Buckley’s Hole, looking across to the Bird Hyde. By Alistair Gray Thanks to the lowlifes who dumped construction waste, which included a lot of asbestos, on the edges of Buckley’s Hole Conversation Park, the City of Moreton Bay has had to employ a contractor to undertake the necessary remediation work to remove the asbestos. The work is expected to take about 12 weeks to complete at a cost of $640,000. The waste discovery has resulted in employing contaminated land consultants in conjunction with the state government to ensure the safe removal of any asbestos-containing material and the management of any associated health risks. The extensive work required will include brush cutting of all vegetation excluding mature trees, herbicide control of all weeds and exotic grasses and raking of the top 100 - 300mm of soil, depending upon the area, with an excavator. Safe dis-

posal of asbestos and careful air quality control monitoring is paramount. The affected area along the edges of The Boulevard, Bongaree will be fenced off during the work. The stair access track opposite 15 Brake Street will remain closed until the staircase is renewed, with work expected to start shortly. The good news is that much of the vegetation will be re-established using native tube stock and retention of mature trees to ensure the stability of the embankment. The area affected is away from the lake and water areas which make Buckley’s Hole unique and a habitat for a wide range of bird life, including migratory shorebirds. For those locals who live or visit this area, it is hard to imagine this pristine area being violated in such a way. We thank the City of Moreton Bay team for their planned work to remediate the site safely.

That’s why you’ve also told us in the LNP we must be implementing gold standard early intervention and prevention programs to prevent kids turning to crime in the first place and to turn young offenders around before they get caught in the cycle of repeat offending. The LNP Opposition wrote to the Queensland Audit Office (QAO) calling for an immediate review of the more than $1 billion being spent on prevention and early intervention programs. There is no doubt some of those services are working. But it’s also pretty clear that many are not! The QAO is currently undertaking that audit - assessing whether youth justice strategies and programs are effective in reducing crime by serious repeat offenders and improving community safety. They expect to table their report in parliament before March 2024. We eagerly await the findings of that audit as they will help guide how a future LNP state government would invest in prevention and early intervention. A key responsibility of a government is to create a safe environment for people to live their lives. The Palaszczuk Labor Government have given up. An LNP government will have no greater priority than providing this to Queenslanders. As I wrap up, if you have been impacted by crime, or your insurance premiums have jumped significantly, share your story with me. Please email me at Glass.House@parliament.qld.gov.au with your experience.

Winner Candice Kiss

All the hard work, dedication and effort that goes into her craft has paid off for Candice Kiss after Annie Lane won the Australian Women's Small Business Champion Award in the cafe category last month. It’s another accolade to add to what is proving to be quite a successful year in business including winning the Pumicestone small business of the year in hospital-

ity and Amy winning employee of the year; becoming a Best of Queensland Experiences tourism operator; finalist in the restaurant and caterers’ awards for Best Breakfast in Queensland and also making the list of Australia’s top 50 small business leaders report. Extremely humbled by all the recognition, Candice is grateful for everyone who gets behind the café and her team. To say she is still coming to terms with her latest award win is most definitely an understatement. But true to her character, Candice is all about recognising everyone’s contribution. “It is a privilege and words cannot express how grateful and proud I am,” she said. “I’m grateful to my five children for pushing and supporting me when I thought I couldn’t keep going and to my husband for being my number one support person and being the backbone to my dreams. “But I’m also grateful to my incredible team for sharing my vision and walking alongside me to make Annie Lane what it is today. And for the community for welcoming us and continuing to support us every week. Without you small business doesn’t exist.” After being named in last year’s Australian Women's Small Business Champion Awards final and coming away unsuccessful, Candice knew she

deserved a spot in the final again, but never thought she would win. “When they called my name in front of 1200 people it didn’t even register, like I was watching from the outside,” she said. “I didn’t have a speech prepared, so my acceptance definitely came from the heart.” Many of you may have been following Candice’s journey from the beginning. It all started in 2016 when she opened a food truck, which many locals may remember featured home cooked meals delivered on a weekly basis. In 2017 came the opening of Gather & Feast in Caboolture and Annie Lane came along in 2019. “From the first day as an apprentice chef at the age of 16 I just knew I had to have my own space,” Candice said. “A space to showcase my creative talents, to showcase local produce and reduce food miles and to bring a food experience that values sustainable practices. “Gather & Feast was definitely an interesting choice of location to start a new business, when so many told me it would never work. I saw a gap in the market and knew that the Caboolture community deserved a beautiful food experience just as much as the inner-city folk. It was a hard barrier to break at first as the locals thought it was all a little too different from what they were used to, but I knew that if I continued to follow my passion and serve with love, integrity and authenticity that it would eventually become a success. To this day I still can’t quite believe how busy that place gets! “As a Ningi local, I didn’t want the Bribie locals missing out on the action so Annie Lane was born. It was a chance to bring our ethos of beautiful nourishing food direct from local farmers, a community hub for locals to gather and with the heavy tourist trade a chance to celebrate all things over the top and indulgent.” Knowing that the effort she puts into her business isn’t going unnoticed is a big part of what spurs Candice on to continue growing and shining a spotlight on what can be achieved when you set your mind to it. “On a personal level, winning this latest award has given me recognition for the years of hard work and sacrifice,” Candice said. “As with many

small business owners, especially women, I have often struggled with imposter syndrome. I used to believe that unless I was absolutely perfect, was the hardest worker or reached the highest achievements that people may think I was a fraud. Over the years in business, I have overcome those fears to realise that I am worthy in all aspects of my life and this award just cements that further.” Being a business owner has given Candice the freedom for creativity, the opportunity to see what she can produce, especially working from the ground up and also the chance to build lifelong friendships within the local community, as well as cement memories with staff who she calls her extended family. But above all else, the role she has built is the best way to guide others on the same path. “I think I have a natural ability as a mentor. I wouldn’t give myself a title, but it is something that just happens naturally with my staff and other business owners, she said. “I am a true empath and feel things very deeply, so if I can feel that someone needs my help or advice, I’m all in. I think it’s important to share knowledge, help others realise their strengths and potential, both personally and professionally. “As a community, especially in the tourism sector, I am a true believer of collaboration and investing in the success of others. Most importantly, inadvertently mentoring others is a two-way street and gives you the opportunity to learn from others.” So, what else lies ahead for this successful woman in business? “Well, there are many plans, to be honest my brain never stops,” Candice said. “I have a food trip booked in the Middle East next year, but once I’m back you can definitely expect more things from us here in Moreton Bay. “My advice to any budding entrepreneurs out there looking to make that jump into small business - polish your skills, learn some more, grow your network, harness the correct support from people around you, lead with empathy and follow your passion.” Drop in and visit Annie Lane Café at 5/1 Toorbul Street, Bongaree.

Celebrating 60 years of the Bribie bridge COLOUR PACKAGES Style cut, colour & Blow Dry From $110 FROM $120 from $130

short hair medium long

FOIL PACKAGE From $140

Style cut, 15 foils, colour & Blow Dry

HIGHLIGHTS PACKAGE The crowds swarmed to see the opening of the Bribie bridge.

By Sheree Hoddinett With beautiful views on either side, there’s no denying how nice it is to cross the Bribie bridge. On one side you can take in the picturesque Glasshouse Mountains and on the other, the glimmering waters of the Pumicestone Passage. You might even be lucky to spot a bit of wildlife, from the array of local birds fluttering around or even a dolphin or dugong in the water. Can you believe the Bribie bridge is about to turn 60? On October 19, 1963 the brand-new bridge was officially opened by the then Queensland premier Frank Nicklin. The bridge, which took two years to build, was the longest, pre-stressed, pre-cast concrete bridge in Australia at the time of its construction and spans a total of 831.4 metres from Sandstone Point across to the Island. Considered a historic landmark of Bribie, it is the only bridge that connects the Island to the mainland. The earliest regular visitors to Bribie Island came by boat following the construction of the first jetty in May 1912 at Bongaree. A number of steamships including the Koopa and Doomba transported holidaymakers from Brisbane to Bribie Island. The idea of a bridge to Bribie Island had been discussed for many years and on November 17, 1959 came an official announcement that the bridge would be built. Can you believe when the Bribie bridge first opened it had a toll of 10

shillings, a decision that came about right before the opening of the bridge. It caused controversy at the time, was the same cost as the car ferry and apparently 10 times higher than the toll on the Hornibrook Highway bridge. Despite the toll being so high, it certainly didn’t stop the visitors and proved how popular the Island was (and still is!) as a holiday and tourism destination with the toll paid off in full by 1975. The first toll ticket was purchased by Premier Nicklin and the last toll ticket was purchased by Bribie resident Mr Stan Balmer on March 22, 1975. Bribie Island was home to roughly 600 residents when the bridge was first built but has now grown to a population of more than 20,000 people, many of them regularly commuting to work and other local services by crossing the bridge. With two traffic lanes and a pedestrian pathway on one side, it’s a bridge that certainly sees a lot of traffic, plenty of congestion and many an accident. It’s a structure that has stood the test of time, but the calls are still there for a new bridge to be built. Only time will tell on how that one will play out! But for now, we can celebrate the 60 years the bridge has served the local community and marvel in the structure that continues to allow us to travel on and off the Island as much as we like. Happy 60th birthday to the Bribie bridge!

The changing face of Bribie Island

By Alistair Gray

Wow! Seeing the significant building activity taking place on Bribie and the new investment in our community is exciting. Those who have been around the Bribie Island Bowling Club will have noticed the spectacular large white shade covers erected over the bowling greens at the rear of the club and the massive building works that have been taking place at the new satellite hospital. Next door at the Bribie Island State High School, a gigantic new structure is being erected the size of a large school hall or gym which is an upgrade to the roofing over the multipurpose court. Besides these projects, a large new health hub is being built adjacent to the car park at Bribie Central on Fortune Avenue. Who said nothing is happening on Bribie?

The new shade sails are halfway complete at the Bribie Bowling Club. Bribie Island Bowling Club – “It is a fabulous development for the club and a great attraction for our tournaments. It will be good for our members and the local community,” Bribie Bowls Club Inc. general man-

ager Kevin Birtwistle said. The large shade sails cover an area of 3600 sqm covering two synthetic bowling greens, enabling bowls to be played day or night and protecting players from the elements, particularly the sun. The new facility is expected to open in the second week of December. There will still be a traditional green open to the elements. The upgrades also include a new car park expected to be completed in January. The project total cost will be just under $3 million dollars and will be completed without any financial help from the government. The Bribie Bowling Club is one of the largest bowling clubs in the state with about 420 members. What a great asset for our community to enjoy.

track to be poured in November, with practical completion in the second quarter of 2024. The Cornerstone Group has been responsible for constructing and developing integrated health hubs that provide community access to the best of multidisciplinary collaborative and preventative health care. The group operates health hubs in Beerwah, Chermside, Gosford and Penrith, with specialist medical centres in North Lakes and Canberra. This new development can only be seen as excellent news for Bribie locals.

Satellite Hospital - You will have already noticed the major works that have been taking place around the new satellite hospital, the lines of tradie vehicles around the site with many jobs being created with the project. With the main building works and rear car park completed,

the specialist fit out work begins. However, no specific opening date has been announced, but is expected to be sometime around mid-2024. Besides the fit out work, the detailed work of finalising the health services to be delivered, the specialist human resource planning and delivery in a time of severe medical staffing shortages, cannot be underestimated as challenging. Particularly with balancing the community's high expectations for delivering a wide range of specialist services. This may require a progressive roll-out of services as the satellite hospital manages the community's demands with the immediate availability of specialist health resources to meet those demands. Bribie Health Hub – Construction of this new medical facility started in June 2023 and will house a GP Clinic and other health medical tenancies. It will have a net leasable area of 1700 sqm. The creative side of Joy

By Sheree Hoddinett A splash of artistic flair, a brilliant smile and a very sunny nature, that was the persona of Joy Brown. If you have lived on the Island for many years, chances are you may have crossed paths with Joy. Not only was she well known in the art community, but also owned The Island & Mainland News and some other local magazines with her husband Rick for many years. Joy passed away on September 13, shortly after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Joy Brown. know she sold a lot of paintings around the Island, so I have no idea how many are out there, but what she did was more of a realistic style than any kind of abstract work. I was very proud of her as an artist.” When Joy met Rick (on a double blind date), the pair were smitten with each other and married not long after they met. “She told me a story about their first date,” Sandra said with a laugh. “Dad grabbed her by the hand and he took her down this dark alley. She said he could have been an axe murderer or anything, but she just trusted him instinctively and said she felt at home with him. They were Joy and Rick on their wedding day.

Her daughter Sandra described Joy as a kind and gentle soul, who will be greatly missed and her talents will make the world a little less special with her passing. “Mum was a great person. She was really generous not only to our family, but everyone around her,” Sandra said. “She was a homemaker for the first eight years of my life and dedicated her time to looking after me and my younger brother Adam. “My dad was very old fashioned and saw

That’s when she started doing her art and she also did cake decorating too. She was very creative. “Mum also owned a materials shop on the Island at one point and she was doing dressmaking too. She even made my formal dress for me and things like that.” Long before living her best life on Bribie, Joy was based interstate and was actually born in Sydney on September 26, 1946. There were tough times in Joy’s early years, the most significant being the loss of her father when she was just 13-years-old. Joy quit school and entered the workforce to support her mum. Money was tight but there was always music and singing. Her pianola was her pride and joy. “Mum loved singing and she loved musicals,” Sandra said. “I think she felt like she was born in the wrong era and should have been back with all those beautiful big dresses and everything like that with dancing and singing around everywhere. She was also part of a performance group on the Island and really enjoyed doing musicals with them.” But it would seem art, especially painting was a big part of her life. “Mum was an amazing artist,” Sandra said. “I

just taking a short cut to beat the other couple they were on a date with, to play a trick on them. Mum said that was when she knew dad was the guy for her and he was lots of fun and always made her laugh.” After years of living in New South Wales and dissatisfied with ‘the rate race’, Rick and Joy sold their house in Engadine and drove along the southern coastline of Australia to Perth, hoping to find a better life. Unfortunately, it wasn’t what they expected and a month later they returned to Sydney and decided to try going north instead. After one-and-a-half years on the road (with a nine and a five year old and no screen entertainment!) they pulled into Silver Shores Caravan park one evening and decided to stay. They had finally found home on Bribie Island and this is where they would stay. Another big accomplishment for Joy was being the head of the committee which successfully petitioned for the high school on the Island. Life also hit Joy and Rick with some big knocks, but the hardest one of all was Rick’s melanoma diagnosis, which happened not long after they had started finding their feet again. He passed away just a few years later and Joy was devastated. Slowly she moved forward and put herself out into the world again, finding solace in music and of course, her painting. Joy is survived by her sister, Gloria, her son and daughter, Adam and Sandra and her grandsons, Leo and Elkana. It’s time to show us the money!

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery has fired a clear message towards the state government - show us the money! It has come in response to the draft Shaping SEQ 2023 Regional Plan Update. “The premier needs to pay attention to the City of Moreton Bay,” Mr Flannery said. “The infrastructure outlined for Moreton Bay in the state’s draft SEQ Infrastructure Supplement (SEQIS) is not good enough. The proposed infrastructure is not sufficient for our projected growth. We can’t develop land for housing without infrastructure.” Mr Flannery said with our population expected to be more than 800,000 by 2046 (300,000 more than what we currently have) the growth is coming and more money is needed to accommodate it. “If we are to shoulder the bulk of the growth – the state government needs to put its money where its mouth is because the truth is they haven’t been,” Mr Flannery said. “We commissioned a report to look at state investment in Moreton Bay. It shines a harsh light on the Palaszczuk Government’s spending across SEQ. On a per capita basis, Moreton Bay is consistently one of the lowest funded SEQ councils. “Out of the seven large SEQ councils, Moreton Bay ranks fifth for the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program funding on a per capita basis. Almost half of the state’s transport expenditure in our area is for planning and maintenance. Moreton Bay is the lowest funded council in terms of investment in local road networks.” Mr Flannery believes our council area should be at the top of the list as we have the population to demand it and continue to welcome new residents.

Opening 17th October 2023

GRAND OPENING We are excited to welcome Dr Tabrez to our team. Who will be practising from our brand new Banksia Beach Clinic. Having travelled around Australia with his young family the past year, Dr Tabrez Prakash (Tabs) is excited to be back providing dental care for Bribie Island and surrounding communities. He has over 10 years experience and brings a friendly attitude and a commitment to providing the highest standard of care for our patients.

www.banksiabeachdental.com.au

“We are the third largest council in Australia,” Mr Flannery said. We will welcome more than 12,500 people every year for the next 25 years. That’s 240 people - or 92 new dwellings - every week. For once, let’s build the roads, bridges, schools and housing as we grow. Our submission outlines additional projects that must be included to support housing, jobs and population growth. That list includes major road corridor upgrades, new roads, bridge crossings, rail level crossing removals and a freight terminal. “Council has identified 15 additional region-shaping infrastructure projects including most importantly the Buchanan Road corridor upgrade. While the long-awaited Bruce Highway western alternative is included, the state government needs to urgently super charge progress on this project. “Council does not support the inclusion of Elimbah in the Urban Footprint at this stage. The significance of Waraba and Morayfield South (100,000 residents combined) needs to be recognised and must be prioritised for planning and infrastructure delivery before Elimbah.” Jobs were also another factor highlighted by Mr Flannery as needing more attention. This draft plan also falls short of our minimum employment growth needs by 50,000 jobs,” he said. “Moreton Bay needs its fair share of the anticipated job growth; at a bare minimum we will need 3.7 new jobs for every 10 new residents. The plan outlines only 2.3 jobs per 10 new residents. “We are asking for the state government to show us the money and we will show you how to create a city that people love even as it grows.”

The growth and cultivation of Spring Sciences Australia By Sheree Hoddinett If you haven’t yet heard of Spring Sciences Australia (SSA), chances are you soon will. They are the team behind a soonto-be fully operational medical cannabis (MC) facility right here in the City of Moreton Bay. The facility is the first of its kind in Queensland for Spring Sciences Australia, who is an affiliate company to Spring Sciences USA. The setup of the facility, cultivation and manufacturing will all take place in co-operation with their US partners, which has established cutting edge research and technology capabilities to develop a top medical cannabinoid

product line for domestic and international markets. For the local team, they see their approach to the industry as being significantly differentiated from other like developments in providing essential new industry, employment and revenue to regional Queensland communities. The growing facility will include industry leading management practices, contained in a strictly controlled indoor growing environment using propriety hybrid strains, specifically designed to achieve the highest quality of product. And what a setup they have! When I was first told I was going to tour the local facility, I really had no idea what to expect. To say I was impressed really is an understatement. From tissue culture (where the plants come to life) to growing rooms, trimming, drying, packaging and then final shipment, the whole facility is all about a lean and efficient process. The team have been carefully selected to fill their roles and are certainly experts in their respective fields. Dr Steve Newberry is the chief executive officer of SSA and has an extensive background in business and company start-ups, in mining and other industrial sectors. As the Australian co-founder of SSA, he has been working in the medicinal cannabis industry for more than a half-decade and is excited to see things finally coming to fruition and close to operational at the sophisticated facility. “We established SSA four years ago following discussions with a long-time business associate, Rob Gerhard,” Steve said. “He had successfully invested and built a medicinal cannabis facility in Michigan USA under the Spring Sciences brand. We all agreed that Australia was the ideal place to replicate and build upon that business model on the back of the

expertise and IP the US team could bring to the business. “It's been a long haul, almost four years since we submitted our initial licence application and we have gone through a lot in that time, but it has all now come together and is a very exciting time for us. We have a great team and we can't wait to start growing and to complete our first harvest.” From the first turning of dirt on the SSA local site to the point where they are now has taken two years of hard work, dedication and a never-give-up attitude. But as Steve points out, it’s a venture that will certainly be worth it once they are fully operational. “The medicinal cannabis (MC) licencing, construction and approval process through to completion has been four years. So, it's not for the faint hearted,” he said. “We are now implementing the operational phase of our business plan

which will see exciting expansion of cultivation, production and processing of medicinal cannabis. “The facility will produce 10-12 tonne of dry flower a year when at full capacity, along with extracts and pharmaceutical products with a doubling of capacity with the completion of stage two of the facility. This will commence construction later next year. “We are also establishing a series of satellite broadacre growing operations around Caboolture to support the main facility and this will further add significant raw material for production of MC extracts. So, we intend to be a major player in both the domestic and international MC market.” The team currently features 15 staff and will increase to 30 by January next year. The full complement of staff is expected to be around 50-60. The growth of the team is just one exciting chapter in the story of SSA, with plenty still to come on their venture. “Apart from the initial employment boost and boost to local service industries during construction, it is a new industry with the potential to attract other downstream pharmaceutical businesses,” Steve said. “The idea of developing a pharmaceutical campus in the new industrial areas is something we have proposed to the City of Moreton council. “Demand for medicinal cannabis in Australia is growing exponentially and we believe that in providing a premium quality, locally grown, reliable Aussie product will, over time, help alleviate supply issues and quality concerns common with imports. “We have some exciting joint ventures in place with other Australian and international companies, which will allow SSA to establish its pharmaceutical brand with a comprehensive range of premium MC products. We intend to set a new benchmark, in terms of Australian product quality, efficacy and price. This is an area we are actively working on now and we hope to launch our brand in the new year. “It's an exciting new industry for which we believe we have developed the right business model. With the commencement of cultivation in the coming weeks, we move into a dynamic new growth phase for SSA.” To find out more about the SSA company and what they do, visit https://www. springsciences.com.au

Mobile phones, computers, televisions, iPads, gaming devices, there are so many aspects in our lives today that revolve around technology. There’s no denying we rely on it heavily, for work purposes, everyday life and of course, for entertainment purposes. As a mum of two young children slowly making their way into the world of technology, I do worry about the chances of them being bullied online. In fact as a parent, I worry about them being bullied in general. As we all know kids, well people really, can be quite mean. It’s an unfortunate side effect of human nature. We can teach our kids to be kind, not to talk to strangers, not to listen to the mean things people say to them, but inevitably these things still happen. From TikTok to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and even games (Minecraft and Roblox just to name a couple), whichever platform is their go to, if your child is active online, chances are they may encounter cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the online version of traditional bullying – a misuse of power to cause intentional and repeated harm. It can take many forms, including sending threatening texts, exclusion and intimidation, or harassing by sharing images, texts and videos without consent and with the intent to humiliate. It can be open and obvious or covert and hidden. Cyberbullying is most commonly done through social media. While social media is a great way to keep in touch with friends, how easy it is to use and access means that cyberbullying on social media can be common. Cyberbullying can be even more distressing because of its very public and uncontrollable nature. Why? Because there’s no limit to who can view or take part in cyberbullying; it can be very difficult to remove content shared online; it can be anonymous and content can be accessed through search engines. It’s hard for people to escape the bullying, especially if they use technology in their everyday lives and let’s face it,

technology is very much ingrained in our lives now, it’s not often we escape it. It’s estimated only one in 10 young people actually inform a parent or trusted adult of cyberbullying. Some reasons for this low number include embarrassment, fear of not being believed, fear of having the issue trivialised, or worst of all losing access to technology. We can tell our kids not to talk to strangers, both in person and online, but ultimately we can’t control every little thing they do and we certainly can’t stop bullying from happening. The best we can do, or at least try to do, is equip them with the necessary tools to deal with the situations they may find themselves confronted with. Make sure your child knows it's not their fault, they're not alone and that there are ways to deal with cyberbullying. •

Ensure that if they have them, your child’s social media accounts have privacy settings switched on and that they only accept friend requests from people they know in real life.

Chat to your kids about the importance of not sharing their personal information with anyone online. Especially things like passwords, their full name, address, phone number and what school they go to.

Remind them to ignore messages from people they don’t know. The internet can be a great place to make new friends, but it is still super important to be extra cautious due to fake accounts and trolls.

Make sure they know that cyberbullying is wrong and they shouldn’t do it.

Ensure that your child knows how to block, delete or report anyone who is upsetting them online.

Taking positive steps to educate your child about what they can do about cyberbullying can be a good way to ensure they come to you for support when they need it the most.

It's time to change the conversation about housing The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) was represented by CEO Antonia Mercorella at the Queensland Housing Roundtable recently, the third held since September last year. Following the meeting, REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said rather than going round in circles, it was time to change the conversation about housing. “I’ve appeared before countless senate inquiries, parliamentary hearings, and housing roundtables, yet the same voices keep getting called back for more talking and nothing appears to be materially changing,” Ms Mercorella said.

“Until we have a fundamentally different conversation and are prepared to make bold and courageous decisions, nothing

ment to address the crisis,” she said.

“It’s time to make a radical shift and totally reconsider the taxation and regulatory settings that underpin the housing market.

“Given the extent of the problem, and the political focus dedicated to the issue, you’d think we would have seen stronger action by now.

“It’s time to look outside of Queensland and Australia to find new solutions that overcome the financial and bureaucratic hurdles impacting new construction process and cost and ownership pathways in Queensland.”

“We’ve heard political promises of a proper long-term plan for housing in the works, but that’s starting to feel like a long shot.

Ms Mercorella said the REIQ commends Robbie Katter for putting forward a regional focussed solution in today’s Courier-Mail opinion piece he authored.

“The REIQ is now working on a solid action plan to offer a way forward for Queensland and will be engaging with key stakeholder and community groups in the coming months.”

“Sadly, there is not enough innovative thinking happening at any level of govern-

Residents invited to have their say on hotel concerts A large group of residents made the most of the opportunity to have their say about concerts held at the Sandstone Point Hotel at a recent community meeting. The hotel hosted the meeting on October 4 in regard to their liquor licence and the area it covers.

makes its decision. “We are not anti the hotel at all – they put on so many fun family activities which we love,” Mr Park said following the meeting. “It is just not a suitable place for rock concerts. The local residents were all living here well before the hotel was built; they came here to retire, to enjoy a peaceful life.

Ahead of the meeting Sandstone Point Hotel Director Rob Comiskey explained briefly what the meeting would be about. “We have called a meeting today to chat with local residents and gather their feedback regarding our application to reduce our liquor licence area,” Mr Comiskey said. “As part of the changes to our liquor licence, we thought it would be a good opportunity to seek feedback from the community, whether positive or negative, about our concerts at Sandstone Point Hotel. “We will use these insights to see how we can improve our ongoing operation, minimising any impact on our surrounding neighbours. We look forward to engaging with residents later this afternoon.” The Pumicestone Area Noise Abatement Group Inc. also known as PANAG have been vocal about the noise from concerts at the hotel since

the beginning. PANAG chairman Ken Park was one of about 70 residents who was able to make it along to the meeting at such short notice. Mr Park explained that large, loud rock concerts had only been permitted at the hotel because the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) had, for the duration of each concert, removed the stage from the hotel’s liquor licence. “The liquor licence exists to protect patrons, staff, neighbours and the public,” Mr Park said. “Among the

many conditions in the licence is the allowable noise regulation, so, if the stage is unlicenced there is no regulation by OLGR of the noise or other activities that occur on the stage. This situation has been in place for some years against the objections of the council and PANAG.” Rather than seeking one-off temporary removal of the stage for each major rock concert, the hotel now wants it to be made permanent. However, this time the public are invited to have their say on the matter before OLGR

“Many have to leave town when the big concerts are on. Windows rattle, you cannot converse, you can’t hear the television. We are definitely not wowsers, we encourage the hotel and OLGR to make arrangements so that all activities at the hotel comply with the hotel’s commercial liquor licence and with the liquor act. These requirements apply to every other licenced premises in Queensland, so it is not too much to ask.” “We, the local residents, need to take full advantage of this rare opportunity to make our opinions known,” PANAG secretary Ken Simper added. “All are encouraged to make submissions to OLGR.” For anyone who needs further history or information on this issue or guidelines for making submissions to OLGR, please contact Ken Simper on 0408421666 or email secretary.panag@ gmail.com.

Celebrating a night under the stars just a patch of grass. It truly exceeded all of my expectations,” House of Jade owner Andie said. “From the very beginning they were so easy to work with, ensuring every little detail of my brief was implemented. It looked so stunning I didn’t want them to take it all down after the event.” Local florist Jstems was tasked with creating rustic, native arrangements for the tables working closely with the event stylist to meet the theme and colour brief. Andie was full of praise for Jstems owner Jaye, who “was so flexible and a pleasure to work with and the florals were just gorgeous”. The event was put together by House of Jade for locals by locals, to celebrate and recognise that we are lucky to have some incredibly talented small businesses on the island and that we don’t need to look very far for services or beautiful settings for our special celebrations. Events by Billy Grace is available to transform your venue, no matter how big or small, into something dreams are made of. They happily travel to locations throughout Queensland and New South Wales and have an inventory of hire equipment and staging décor to suit any budget or theme. A secret location on the island was recently transformed into a whimsical wonderland for “A Night Under the Stars” hosted by local caterer House of Jade. Bribie based newcomer “Events by Billy Grace” were invited to showcase their incredible talent of turning an ordinary backyard into a luxurious, rustic, fairy lit setting including fire pits, antique velvet lounges, Persian rugs, wine barrels and timber trestle tables adorned with florals by local business Jstems. Ticket holders were treated to savoury and sweet canapes by House of Jade and danced the night away to the sounds of live band BenJam, but the absolute star of the show was the stunning caravan/ bar/stage named “Minty” brought in by Events by Billy Grace to set the scene. “I was absolutely blown away with what Events By Billy Grace had created on

GARDEN WITHJill

Jill Ross from Mitre 10 Bribie Island. (Meet Jill on the floor at Mitre 10). Jill is a horticulturist and has an Associate Diploma in Horticulture and has worked in the horticulture industry at various nurseries round the greater Brisbane area for 30 years.

Hi Gardeners,

fertiliser are applied. It is important to test your soil not just year-to-year, but season-to-season. In spring before sowing and then again in autumn. You will then have healthy lawns, vegetables, fruit, flowers and shrubs.

I have just enjoyed two wonderful weeks holiday. I haven’t taken school holidays since my son went to school; he is now 38. The Shingle Inn, a lovely English style teahouse and restaurant was established in 1936. I took the grandkids into the City Hall, where the Shingle Inn is located and then a look around the MOB (Museum of Brisbane), also located at the City Hall, with great history and an art gallery. I also managed to relax and watch one of my favourite TV programs - Antiques Roadshow. One particular episode was at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, featuring a botanical illustrator. For centuries, illustrators have produced drawings to help identify and understand plant life. Wouldn’t it be a great gift to yourself or a friend for you to sit relaxing and inspired in your garden, putting pencil to paper and drawing one of your favourite flowering plants?

A pH test is easy to use, with the test showing whether the soil is acid or alkaline. Our soil is not naturally rich and we can spend years building up layers of organic matter, ensuring the garden has the right texture. Whether you are starting a new garden or improving an established garden, we need to look at our soil. Soil has three types: sand, loam and clay.

Beautiful lavender is now flowering. well as other species. Koalas have strong regional preferences for certain Eucalypt species and in a particular district will feed almost entirely on one or two species. One of the most important food trees in Queensland is the Blue Gum, Eucalyptus tereticornis.

The Koala is strictly a leaf or foliage feeder, utilising a large number of Eucalyptus.

LAVENDER

KOALA FOOD TREES

These lovely plants should be flowering in your garden at present. French lavender (Lavandula dentata) has a strong perfume growing to one metre with soft grey-green leaves and thick stems with compact mauve flowers, great for our Queensland conditions. Varieties for growing in terracotta pots are Lavandula augustifolia ‘Hidcote’, low growing to 50cm with beautiful deep violet blue flowers and a soft lavender perfume. Lavandula augustifolia ‘Munstead’ is semi-prostrate with blue violet flowers. Prune back by one-third after flowering and watch the watering with grey foliage plants as they hate wet feet. Remember, any plant with silver or grey leaves are heat and drought tolerant.

The retention or improvement of habitat is important for the present and future conservation of many species of wildlife, especially Koalas. The Koala is strictly a leaf or foliage feeder, utilising a large number of Eucalyptus as

Koala food trees should be selected for soil type and landform involved. These trees will also provide other benefits such as protection from erosion and nesting sites for insect eating birds. As most of these trees grow between 20 to 45 metres, a large plot of land is advisable. Suggested trees: scribbly gum, brush box, narrow leaved red gum, tallowwood, narrow leaved ironbark, grey ironbark, swamp mahogany and red stringybark.

Loam soil needs little to no work, you just need to add some nutrients. Clay soils are hard to work. It takes ages for the water to drain away, therefore you need to add compost, manure and washed sand. Adding Gypsum is also another way of improving the soil by allowing more air to penetrate. So do yourself a favour and purchase a pH test kit. Alternatively, some nurseries will test your soil and advise on how to improve it. SUMMER GARDEN MAINTENANCE

GUESSWORK Soil needs conditioning and plants need food. Plants depend on the correct pH; therefore we need to balance our garden levels of nitrogen, phosphorous and potash. You should test the soil to make sure the correct amount of lime and With low rainfall predicted Mulch is one way of preventing evaporation. We are in for a very dry hot summer and with no rain, we may end up on water restrictions. After spending all that time, energy and money on your beautiful gardens and lawns, don’t lose them now. Water crystals, wetting agents and mulch are going to be your best friends during this time. If spreading sugar cane mulch on the garden run your hose through the bale, then it will go onto the garden moist and not blow away if the day is windy. One mulch to try is ‘Who Flung Dung’, which helps add beneficial microbes to your garden.

FRANGIPANI Thinking about bringing a tropical feel to your garden, there is nothing more perfect than a frangipani tree. The frangipani will grow in any soil type, however adding some organic matter to sandy soil helps. These plants are drought tolerant and when first planted benefit with a feed of Seasol. They hate wet feet, so watering once a week during spring and summer is advised, leaving them to their own devices in winter.

Our soil here on Bribie Island is sandy, therefore moisture drains away quickly, either after rain or watering by hand. We can help to correct this by adding compost and manure to help with water holding soil.

Make sure all your tall plants are staked and that the ties do not cut into the plants. Happy Gardening! The perfect Frangipani.

Jill

Greetings readers of ‘the LOCAL’ newspaper!

Hi everyone, Danny and Michelle from Island Fishing Supplies, Banksia Beach and Bellara! RED BEACH TO WOORIM It has been a fantastic Summer Whiting season so far. We have received great reports from South Point Red Beach, with live bloodworms as the best bait by far. SANDSTONE POINT Still the odd Tailor on lures and plenty of Flathead on the Flats, live baits and fresh herring are the go. BELLARA – SYLVAN BEACH There is good Flathead around the sandbank off Pirate Park. Soft plastics have been working very well.

Lily with a haul of Whiting from White Patch. surface lures. In addition, they can be worked along the drop-offs and through deep holes during drifts between Flats, which is ideal for Whiting, Bream and Flathead. Larger vibes lure plenty of oversized Flathead as well, so the choice is yours. Similarly, vibes are deadly on tropical estuarian species such as Barramundi, Mangrove Jacks, Queen Fish and Threadfin Salmon. Small vibes worked in drains will lure juvenile Barra one after the other and when cast to cruising Threadfin, which can result in awesome catches of these wonderful fish.

Ahmet from Sunset Pier Café caught this beautiful Flathead. WHITE PATCH Summer Whiting, whilst they are not as plentiful at White Patch the quality has been outstanding, with 40cm plus fish and again bloodworms are the best bait. GOOD VIBRATIONS! Vibes are a very versatile lure suited to a long list of fish species. Vibes can be worked at any depth the angler wishes. Whilst primarily designed for fishing in deep structure laden water, they can also be worked just below the surface by pulling up the lure as it approaches the surface of the water, commence retrieve upon splash down. Alternatively, the lure can be allowed to reach the bottom (line goes slack) before it is worked back. Small vibes are effective on the Flats when chasing Whiting, if they are not striking

It is with a heavy heart that we have had to say goodbye to John. A loving husband, father and grandfather. John lived on Bribie Island for more than 20 years before moving to Airlie Beach to pursue a new life. He loved to tinker around the house and make everything he could. He was an amazing man with a brilliant mind who worked hard in life and in his careers. John will be missed and forever loved by his family, especially his grandson Elijah. We will be holding a small memorial service on the Island in the near future. If anyone who knew John wishes to attend, please contact his daughter Rebecca via email bec. harris.81@gmail.com
