Equality for all Australians

Congratulations Rodney for being brave enough to publicly support leaving our constitution as it is. I too wish to see equality for all Australians without favouring any minority or powerful group. One person, one vote! Many advisory groups selected from affluent and highly educated Aboriginal citizens already exist. How many do there have to be to make them equal? They are equal.

Yes, they are disadvantaged and huge amounts of money, raised from all Australians, have been used to attempt to bridge this gap. This is what our government should be tackling, with advice from Aboriginals who have experienced life in these communities and are better able to give advice.

I recommend subscribing to Jacinta Price’s regular emails. She is an Aboriginal woman who has worked at the coal face, knows the people and has grass roots connections and experience both in the communities and in

the

political system of Australia. There is no need to change our constitution, just work to ensure those bodies which already exist to represent the Aboriginal communities who are disadvantaged and improve their facilities and lifestyle actually do their job. No doubt it will take years. It is something which won’t change in one or two generations. It certainly won’t change with one small change on a piece of paper.

Thank you Rodney, there are few bold enough to speak against the strong tide of free left-wing advertising from the ABC, paid for by the taxes of all Australians, not just those with leftish views. Keep up the good work.

Mother’s Day (May 14), a day where we celebrate all the mums, mums-to-be, step mums, bonus mums, fur-mums and anyone else who steps up to fill the all-important role. For me, becoming a mum for the first time nearly 10 years ago, was the biggest and most important thing I have ever done in my life. It’s a position I have excelled at, failed at and above all else, one I’m still learning about every single day. The definition of a mother is wide and varied but two different ones I found include:

1. A woman in relation to her child or children.

2. Bring up (a child) with care and affec tion.

We may all do things differently, but the end goal is always the same, to look after the children.

I reached out to the Bribie community to ask if there were any amazing mums out there and the response was much bigger than I thought it would be. Thank you so much to everyone who reached out or who had a story to share. Here are just some of the many stories I received from

There’s no one quite like mum

Her father was at Gallipoli and in France and Belgium during World War I. She is a mother to five children, grandmother to 13 and a great-grandmother to eight with more on the way. She moved to Bribie Island in 1999. She is an amazing watercolour artist and has spent time at the arts centre as a member of a few groups, as well as volunteering on the front desk and in the kitchen on market days. She also ran a few classes as a tutor. One of her paintings is in the time capsule at the arts centre.

I miss her so much and I'd do anything to see her again. I became a first-time mum back in 2022 to a beautiful boy and if I turn out anything like my mum, I would have succeeded as an amazing mum! Every day since my son was born, we are visited from a beautiful black and white butterfly and I believe that is my mum coming to check on us.

• Karen Wragg

• Marie Buck, also known as Miss Marie. I am a mummy of three little girls (Amber 5, Hazel 3 and Holly 2) and run both Island Dance and JKA Karate on Bribie. Like many mums out there, we all wear many hats and often juggle two, three or more at once and sometimes life feels like a circus act. However, no matter what hat we wear, our motherhood hat remains our crown. I would love to do a shout out to all the dance and/or karate mums out there who… - hustle their troops to and from dance, karate, soccer, band, school, swimming and the many activities they run to and from.

- who juggle dinners and meals in between carpools and matching lost jazz shoes.

- who pull off a last-minute bun or ponytail for their dancers whilst finding that missing pair of stockings or socks.

- who teach as a mummy, whilst juggling their own kiddiewinks and have to swap the hat of mum to teacher.

We want them to know we see them; we appreciate them and thank them for being super mums who let their child experience the magic and joy of dance.

• Cherie Lovett

My beautiful mum’s name was Christine Lovett. She had four children - myself, my two sisters and my brother. She gave everything for us, we didn't have much money growing up and that meant if she had to go without food to feed us, she would. As I got older I realised how much she loved us and how much she would do for us. She passed at the age of 54 back in 2017, due to Melanoma.

I was born in Camden in Sydney where I went to primary and high school. When I was four, my mother wanted a divorce and my father was so upset that he burnt the house down. However, I moved in with dad who taught me a lot and is one of the smartest and greatest men that I know. He taught me to fish, do house duties, how to use tools, he taught me to work hard and that nothing is free or easy. He taught me to not worry about getting my hands dirty. I moved from Sydney 19 years ago for a great job that gave me the confidence that I needed as an advertising executive and selling advertising for an accommodation magazine. Then I worked up to “The Pubs and Clubs” magazine on the Gold Coast. I eventually had enough of the parties and full-on lifestyle and decided to move in with my dad again, this time on beautiful Bribie Island.

I had my first epilepsy ‘grand mal’ seizure at 26 when my son was just 19 months old. During these episodes I have no idea what I'm doing and no memory of it afterwards, which is probably a good thing when you think about it. However, it is very traumatic for anyone who is around me at the time.

My life with my kids, 14-year-old Brock and eight-year-old Kayla, is so much better now and you only have to look at photos to see how close we are and how relaxed we all are now. I love my job at the Bribie Island Golf Club and every day I meet up with new friends getting to know the customers I serve. I have also found a new hobby in golf, which I have just started to learn about and absolutely love it. The friendships at the club have made such a big difference. So I'll see you on the 19th hole. Say hello.

My single mum daughter is amazing. Times are tough and there is lots of tears and frustration, but she is killing it as a fantastic parent and role model. She has lived in this area for five years, so between her and myself we take the kids everywhere they need to be - jobs, school, trade school, footy, footy practice, orthodontist, doctors etc etc etc. She is financially struggling but does her best. This world is/ has become a harsh hard place to live and we are trying to teach them the right way, wrong from right, good from evil and all the lessons we think they need to know.

My mum is 92 and is the youngest of four.

My wonderful mum lives on Bribie Island (Woorim) and has six daughters. She is a saint for putting up with all of us and has an interesting life to tell. She grew up in Victoria with four other siblings (two older brothers and two younger sisters). Their dad went missing when she was seven-years-old (it was in the newspaper). She tells a story of how he promised to bring home ice cream and never returned. They lived on dripping on toast and tomatoes. She was dux of year 9 but had to leave school to help support the family, being the eldest female. Mum was actually planning on being a nun and went as a missionary to Papua New Guinea and stayed with cannibals. Her mother and sister then moved to the Gold Coast when she was in her early 20's and that’s where she met my dad. Unfor-

tunately, her mum became ill with cancer and died shortly after their wedding, not long before their first child was born (me). Mum and dad went on to have five more daughters, with no mother by her side or understanding of what a father should be. She has been the pillar/rock of our family through so much over the years and still has such a positive attitude towards life and would do anything for anyone!! I never realised how much her phone rang each day until I sat with her once. Each daughter would ring (including me) with some issue or concern and mum would give just as much time and care to each of us.

There is so much more to tell with what she has given to communities over the years, being netball coach for all of my teen life, taxi driver to many, mum to lost teens and a loving wife to my dad for more than 50 years. Mum wouldn't be used to being in the limelight, she's always the silent achiever. On Mother’s Day this year, she gave birth to her first born 50 years ago – me!! (Happy Birthday Melissa) Happy Mother’s Day!

Nuke Subs – Costs and Facts

I read K Greenaway’s letter regarding the cost of ‘nuke subs’ in the previous edition of The Local with some interest. His/her difficulties with large numbers (I lost the argument around the seconds in a year bit) were certainly interesting. However another, perhaps easier, way to assess the cost of the nuke subs might be to look at other issues currently involving huge dollar amounts in Australia. Greenaway points out the overall cost of the nuke sub project, but doesn’t really show the benefits to the country i.e. infrastructure, jobs, long term work for many and a positive defence capability. Surely this must be taken into account!

Notwithstanding the benefits of the subs project, we can draw parallels with current debt in Australia. Federal government debt alone is almost three times the projected total sub project costs and interest on this debt would almost pay for one nuke sub. We have one of our states, Victoria, with a debt almost half the size of the entire nuke sub project. Putting all the states and Commonwealth debts together, the nuke sub costs are miniscule. They are dwarfed by government debt! AND there are NO ongoing benefits to Australia for this cost!

We won’t have to use seconds to work out how we pay this debt cost back. We will need decades. At least we will be able to do so in safety!

Not a political contest

What is it about Queenslanders? When

I arrived here in the 70’s, we were told to put our clocks back by an hour and 50 years. With the help of Expo 88 one would hope that things would have changed by now, but I’m left wondering.

The leader of the opposition is a Queenslander, so perhaps that is why he still thinks like a colonialist. He and people like R Hansen seem to have beliefs which don’t reflect reality. Only in Queensland does the ‘average person’ look forward to voting NO in the coming referendum. Elsewhere up to 60% intend to vote YES and before the negative campaign got started the figure was 70%.

Misinformation is eroding support for a vote to right the wrongs of the past. Every previous ‘consultative’ body has failed and been disbanded because it was a top-down affair. Because bureaucrats don’t know how to listen. The new Voice is the result of bottom-up discussions, resulting in the generous offer of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Only people like Dutton tell us it is a ‘Canberra Voice’.

I say to all readers, have the grace and generosity of spirit to put aside your political prejudices. This is not a political contest. It is a decision for all the Australian people and if the NO vote wins, we will all be losers.

Here’s to the Matriarchy!

Amelia Strazdins

Mothers. They are our everyday superheroes.

Truly, they do it all from balancing a work life to raising children and all the crazy things in-between that life throws at them. Mother’s Day, which falls on May 14 this year, is a time to acknowledge and celebrate all our wonderful mums and grandmothers.

Whether you are a working mum, or you stay at home, a single mum or have a support team behind you, we are continually in awe of everything you do. There are so many fun, family-orientated activities both locally and a little further away that are perfect for Mother’s Day celebrations. Planning something outdoors, whether that be a picnic at the park or a beach day, is a perfect way to enjoy the last of the warmer weather before winter makes its arrival. Breakfast and brunch are also great options, with many local cafes offering specials, great food and views. If you are wanting to head into the city, there are various events from markets to outdoor activities. No matter if you want to stay local or are up for a drive, there are a plethora of events and activities for everyone. For those exercise orientated, the Mother’s Day Run, organised through Mother’s Day Classic, is a great event to

get involved in whilst simultaneously supporting an amazing cause. Proceeds from participation are all contributed towards breast cancer research. If you are not up for the run, donating to a women’s charity or cause is a thoughtful gift and a great way to support women and mothers around Australia. From donating products and supplies to local women’s shelters, making financial contributions or volunteering your time with organisations, these efforts all assist in supporting mothers and children around our state and country. Ensuring continued support to these organisations and discussing prevalent social issues impacting mothers-and women-such as domestic violence, helps to further support and awareness for these issues.

There is no doubting that Mother’s Day is about celebrations and respect, but it’s also important to remember that it may be a difficult day for some. Truly, many of us would be lost without the matriarchal figures in our lives. These inspirational women play such an important role, not only as mothers but also within our local communities and society as a whole.

Whether you are a biological mother, step-mum, new mum, shortly expecting or now a grandmother we thank you for all you do. To our mums, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day.

Massive interest in the 24th Bribie Classic Boat Regatta

May 20 – 21, 2023

Diamond Wedding Anniversary 60 years

Leo Barraclough and

It is great to see the Bribie Classic Boat Regatta return in full force this year after being washed out last year and the challenges presented by the pandemic. More than 100 boats have registered for the two-day event, which is sure to attract more than a thousand visitors to Bribie.

Held on the pristine waters of the Pumicestone Passage by Bribie Aquatic Community Events Inc., it showcases the Island and a maritime recreational past enjoyed by many of the residents of the Island and the nearby surrounds of Donnybrook and Toorbul. By the way, a ‘classic boat’ is defined as one built between 1943 and 1975. A ‘late classic boat’ is made after 1975 and older than 25 years.

Saturday May 20

All the action will start to be seen around 7am with the launching of the boats at Spinnaker Sound and Bellara boat ramps. This will be followed by a cruise of the Pumicestone Passage at 8.30am to Donnybrook or Poverty Creek, with a free lunch for the boaties organised by the Toorbul Community Association. Next, the fleet will return to the Pacific Harbour Marina for public viewing from 1pm - 4.30pm. There will be heaps to see and do from classic boats, cars and model boats to pop-up stalls, food and entertainment. It is a great time to view the boats on the hard at the Marina.

Sunday May 21

Today, the attention turns to Sylvan Beach with the grand parade of classic boats. The day starts at 9am with an ‘Acknowledgment of Country’ and the sounding of the Conch Shell to welcome the arrival of the grand parade, which includes classic sailing boats, motorboats and speed boats from Pacific Harbour Marina.

Around the beach area will be speciality pop-up stalls, classic cars, model boats, ice cream, a sausage sizzle and musical entertainment provided by the ‘Mullet Gut String Band’. Visitors will be given an opportunity to vote in the ‘People’s Choice Award’ with a presentation by Member for Pumicestone and patron Ali King. In addition, voters will go into the draw for an adventure flight and Ferryman eco-cruise. The Wooden Boat Association of Queensland will also launch and raffle ‘Joey’, a sailing dingy. There is something for everyone. Don’t miss this. It will be a weekend to remember.

Vonnie’s hometown of Southport.

They built their first home in Heilbromm Street, Stafford where they welcomed three children - Mark, Leanne and Kym. They now have six grandchildren. In 1975 Leo was transferred to Townsville to open the National Panasonic warehouse. The children finished their schooling in Townsville and then moved south. Leo and Vonnie purchased a taxi, operating it for seven years before moving to Bribie in 1991.

Vonnie’s first visit to Bribie was in October 1963 with the opening of the bridge, where she took part in the procession. Leo was actively involved on the committee of the Bellara Neighbourhood Watch, helping run it for several years. They both joined Bribie Island Healthy Slimmers Fellowship and today remain active members. Family helped them celebrate at a luncheon on April 23 at the Pacific Harbour Golf Club.

They received cards from King Charles and Camilla, Anthony Albanese, Governor General David Hurley, Qld Governor Dr. Jeannette Young, Qld Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Federal Member Terry Young.

The team at the LOCAL would like to wish Leo and Vonnie a happy wedding anniversary.

Life changing decisions

It would seem that the federal Labor government thinks it has an overwhelming mandate by rushing through so many drastic policies that may change all our lives forever.

Truth be known and fact is that Labor only achieved 32% of the vote. The Coalition achieved 36%.

That’s right, 68% of us did NOT vote Labor and all look like being stung by the climate change scam, with skyrocketing and unreliable electricity policies.

How far down this road will they get before they realise they’ve got it all wrong or before we realise what a pack of no-hopers are taking us down this road.

Feeling the cost of living pinch?

More and more locals are telling me they’re feeling the cost of living pinch. Groceries are more expensive; mortgage repayments and rents have jumped and fuel seems to be more expensive every time you fill up.

What you don’t need is a government piling on additional costs to make it even harder to make ends meet.

But the Palaszczuk Government is doing exactly that. Did you know, since 2015:

• Car rego is up 28% - even the cost to register a 5m tinnie is up 25%;

• Driver licences are up 25%; and

• Power prices up 162%.

These are all costs controlled by the state government and the jump in these costs is directly impacting your hip pocket. Why are they going up so much? Well did you know, this Palaszczuk Government has racked up a $10 billion bill for project blowouts (no, that’s not the cost of projects – that’s just how much they’ve gone over-budget).

And that doesn’t include the now infamous Wellcamp, a facility that cost you, the Queensland taxpayer, $500,000 for each and every day it sat idle. And the government has just handed back the keys, we don’t even own it. In fact, we have nothing to show for the $223.5 million spent on it. So, what does the LNP want to do about it?

The LNP is committed to putting a stop to skyrocketing state government bills.

We’ll deliver:

• Reliable, affordable and sustainable power.

• Affordable car rego and licences.

• Ease the housing crisis to bring down rent costs; and

• Put a stop to the government budget blowouts and the chaos and crisis. We know every dollar extra you spend on state government cost increases is a dollar you can’t spend on your own weekly budget. No one should have to make the choice between feeding their family and paying their car rego.

COVID – 19

At JNR Plumbing we are committed to the safety of our community and our at-risk elderly citizens of Bribie Island and Surrounds.

Due to the risk of COVID -19 our plumbers and labourers will be fitted with masks when we enter your home, this is for your safety and the safety of the community and will minimise the risk of our team transmitting the virus from one home to another when caring for your plumbing needs. In the event of a blocked sewer or other high-risk tasks our team will be suited in disposable suits to again help stop the risk of spreading COVID-19.

We ask that when we come to your home that you practice the government supported social distance of 1.5 meters at all time and to remain polite to our team as they are wearing protective clothing for your benefit and to keep our community safe.

From the team at JNR Plumbing - please stay safe and care for one and other.

Queenslanders can’t afford that. Queenslanders deserve better. Similarly, Queenslanders are finding it harder and harder to keep a roof over their heads thanks to an unprecedented housing crisis affecting families across our state.

We have had eight years of underinvestment in infrastructure that would have opened up new opportunities for young people to get into the housing market and either buy their first home or find a suitable rental.

The LNP is determined to put forward positive solutions to do something about this.

The only way to fix Queensland’s housing crisis is to build more homes and increase housing supply over the short, medium and long terms. But the chaotic approach of the Palaszczuk Government on housing policy has resulted in an abysmal record at doing just that.

Between 2015 and the most recent data of September 2022, residential building approvals fell by 33% across the state.

This means there are nearly 60,000 less homes available for Queensland families than if the Palaszczuk Government kept pace with 2015 approval numbers.

As a result, the predictable housing crush has seen rents rise to alarming levels, while the waiting list for social housing has grown by more than 70% over the past two years.

There are nearly 50,000 Queenslanders currently on the social housing waiting list. It was under 20,000 in 2015. Yet, across the last five years, the state government has only been able to increase the number of social houses by less than 2%.

Our solutions to help ease the housing crisis is to:

- Deliver more residential lots (and therefore more homes) by working closely with local councils to identify areas for targeted and responsible development and build the necessary supporting infrastructure for these communities to grow and thrive.

- Unlock the Community Housing sector in Queensland. These organisations are ready made to help house the vulnerable, but have their hands tied behind their back due to the current policy settings of the Labor government.

- Plan appropriately for the delivery of social housing, so the supply of social housing is able to meet demand. Queenslanders have had enough of the crisis and chaos of the Palaszczuk Government, a government that has jumped from scandal to scandal, from blowout to blowout, from service failure to service failure.

At the next state election, the Palaszczuk Government expects Queenslanders to look the other way and reward their 10 years of failures with another four years in charge of Queensland. None of us can afford that.

The Voice: A perspective

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has asked Australians to vote in the upcoming referendum on the following question :-

"A Proposed Law to alter the Constitution to recognise the First People of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?"

In Issue 80 of The LOCAL – 24/08/22, I wrote :-

"We must all learn about creating an Indigenous Voice to parliament and what it means for you and the future of Australia. It is a watershed moment and we must participate in respectful discussions in the weeks ahead. Despite the lack of clarity, a lot of work over many years will set the base for us to move forward. Now is the time for the government to take a leadership role in removing doubts and concerns and lead the nation to a positive outcome - one country, one people where everyone's voice gets heard".

The performance of our politicians and the media has been very disappointing, with discussions in many cases far from respectful. It seems as if only the loudest voice wins. Unfortunately, there is bullying. The ABC propaganda machine is in overdrive, with the other leading TV channels following suit to support a YES vote demonstrated by overly vigorous questioning of anyone who opposes an affirmative view. At times, some have even suggested a NO vote is racist. Where is the respective discussion and being open to listening and learning from each other's point of view?

Before I go on, I would like to begin by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land where I write today, the Djindubari people of the Gubbi Gubbi Nation, and pay my respects to elder's past, present and emerging.

I also would like to acknowledge the early settlers, those who worked hard, toiled the land and brought knowledge, skills and wealth to Australia and those who made it what it is today. And to acknowledge the new Australians who have introduced us

to different cultures and experiences helping to create a diverse modern and innovative nation. And we must not forget and therefore remember, the many Australians who have laid down their lives to protect our country to ensure we all enjoy the freedom of free speech and democracy we have today.

I greatly respect our First Nations peoples and strongly support their recognition in the constitution. However I see a widening gap, with

litigation. These changes have created a divide in the country that was never there before.

Yes, a Voice is much needed. Unfortunately, endless governments have failed to listen and act. And like it or not, there remains active conscious and unconscious discrimination against indigenous people. Everyone is afraid to talk about it with discrimination issues hidden and everyone becoming defensive at the suggestion of bias. Why else would First Nation

well-intended system and to those students desperately needing help. In other words, a cry for help is not being listened to.

The bottom line is that a lot of action at the state level is required, where they are close to the action and have the power to make a difference. It needs single-minded focus, a purging of blockages and bureaucrats and delivery of measurable outcomes. After all, it is only in relatively recent times that this has become a federal issue.

There have been many arguments within the First Nations community about the value of the voice, with the fundamental goal being to establish a treaty with the Australian government that guarantees the rights of the First Nations people. It is hard to see that succeeding at present, as in Australia, we don't have a Bill of Rights without clearly establishing such rights for all Australians. Maybe we will do that when we become a republic and rewrite the existing constitution to reflect the needs of the new republic.

concerns in our community about where we are heading. We acknowledge our land's traditional owners and I respect that, but why shouldn't we also acknowledge all those others who have made our country so great?

In that way, we are building one country, one people and not one country, two people and a divided nation. There are many lessons to learn from the New Zealand example, both good and bad. For example, there has been a significant transfer of wealth and power to the Māori people through the parliamentary process and

people's education, health, housing and law and order outcomes be so bad? Resources are not getting to where they are needed. For example, a couple of years ago, I was told how indigenous students each get a grant paid to the school to support their specific needs: books, extra tutoring, etc. However, rather than assessing individual needs, schools accumulated these funds and instead spent the grant funding on new playground equipment. When taken up with the state minister, he said that how the school spent the budget was over to the principal. A total failure of a

The question is, is including a voice in the constitution the right way forward? Will it deliver better outcomes or add further bureaucracy, unforeseen problems and cost? Already constitutional lawyers are raising concerns. The intent is to create one voice to represent the Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders and create a platform for reconciliation. The voice will enable Makarrata (the coming together after a struggle), a treaty and truth-telling and allowing self-determination as set out in the "The Uluru Statement from the Heart" (https://ulurustatement.org/ the-statement/). Time will only tell if Australians are prepared to enable change and willing to start working on correcting the wrongs of the past.

The Joondoburri Walk Book

Simply fabulous! The Joondoburri Walk Book is a superb example of collaboration, learning and engagement. It involves bringing together a group of young Bribie Island Community Kindergarten children in an active learning process with parents, the local Aboriginal community and teachers to produce an outstanding educational resource for the whole community to learn from and enjoy.

Inside are pictures of local plants and trees found on the Joondoburri Walk, drawings by the kids of the different plants and explanations of how local Aborigines use these plants along with their ties to culture and ancestors. The commentary is provided by various members of our local indigenous community, supported by a local botanist and author Alan Carr. It was all brought together with some clever graphic design and the help of an Indigenous Languages Grant.

I spoke with head teacher Narelle Dawson, who said the project started in 2016 as an action research project.

“We wanted our children to engage in nature and build their knowledge and engagement with nature,” she said. From here, it all progressively developed. From establishing the Joondoburri Walk, the involvement of local elders and the Moreton Bay Regional Council, who own the land, it’s been a long slow journey of collaboration and support. Today, they are seeking further funding to improve the pathways for better wheelchair access, particularly along the creek bed. The book has been gifted to local schools, learning centres, libraries and those who have contributed to the book. The walk book has attracted interest from educational consultants and naturists, with Narelle and her team heading off on a speaking tour to Western Australia in May. Copies of the Joondoburri Walk Book can be purchased from the Bribie Island Seaside Museum or by emailing yarn@pieec.com.au.

‘Stevie’ - a successful sea turtle rescue

I had heard about ‘Stevie’, the green sea turtle rescued at Beachmere. Little did I know I was about to see Stevie for myself at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. I had learnt how a young girl named Stevie had seen something in the water and gone to investigate. To her dismay she found two giant sea turtles tangled in the rope from a large crab pot. Sadly, one of the turtles had already died from the rope being twisted around its neck. Luckily the other turtle was still alive. A quick call was made to the Wildlife Rescue hotline and within 20 minutes a team of rescuers were onsite working out the best way to save the injured turtle, who was quickly protected from the sun and kept wet. Unfortunately, the turtle (now named

Stevie after the young girl who found him) had sustained a severe flipper injury, so the team had to act quickly to get Stevie to the Wildlife Hospital for treatment.

I was unexpectedly invited at short notice to join a tour of the Wildlife Hospital. Of course I jumped at this unique opportu nity, as I had heard so much about the extraordinary work being done. I was sure it would enhance my being able to convey in words, the incredible service of and further support Wildlife Rescue Queensland.

Arriving early for the tour, our attention was immediately drawn to a large operating theatre surrounded by large glass windows and noticeably, the name ‘Stevie’. The team of professionals were working on him to remove a large clump of nylon

fishing line from his stomach. Being able to look deep into the stomach with the endoscope, they could determine that the line was in several parts, making the job much harder. Despite the difficulties, they finally succeeded. One team member came to the window to show us the line they had just extracted from Stevie’s stomach.

Unfortunately, the flipper had to be amputated, but Stevie is now doing well thanks to the work of the skilled veterinarian team, antibiotics and pain medication. Thankfully, turtles can survive in the wild with only three flippers and Stevie is expected to be released back to the wild in two or three months.

Wow! What dedication and the work they do is nothing short of impressive. A big shout out must go to our young

heroin Stevie, her family, the Beachmere locals and the team at Wildlife Rescue Queensland for their superb work in helping to save Stevie.

The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital has a dedicated turtle unit under the watchful eye of a marine microbiologist. They have been run off their feet with high demands on their services following the impacts of the flooding up near Hervey Bay and the depletion of seagrass. Many of the turtles in care have been suffering from a disease that rots part of their shell. Fortunately, this will later grow back with appropriate treatment. It is a slow and challenging process requiring much care and dedication. One of the turtles with the shell disease has just received treatment with betadine badges.

Real Estate Talk

On the evening of Tuesday April 18, 2023, a bill was rushed through parliament a reform approved that will limit rent increases to once-yearly will apply from 1 July 2023 onwards –but the transition arrangements will mean that contractually agreed rent increases after this date will also no longer be valid.

So, what does this mean?

If you have an existing lease on a property in which the rent increased upon the commencement of the agreement, and the tenants have agreed to an additional increase that would commence after July 1, 2023, that increase would be null and void.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said it was absurd and questioned the legality of the retrospective nature of the new laws.

“As a property investor, you may have negotiated a rent increase that you have banked on and budgeted for and now this has been stripped away,” Ms Mercorella said.

“It’s one thing to introduce rent control from a certain date onwards, but it’s a whole other proposition to retrospectively create laws that

Call to Queensland government to rescind foreign investor surcharges

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is calling on the Queensland government to rescind foreign investor surcharges, in light of the state’s housing crisis.

The REIQ has long-opposed both the 7% surcharge applied to stamp duty introduced in October 2016, and the additional 2% surcharge applied to land tax introduced in 2019 on Queensland property held by foreign entities.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella explained that both additional taxes on foreign investors – who are already being taxed at a federal level – act as a deterrent for capital to be deployed in Queensland.

“When the Labor Government introduced additional surcharges for property transactions from foreign buyers, the REIQ called it out as a cash grab which would deter desperately-needed property investment and would slam the state shut for business,” she said. “A growing population is a great thing for our economy, but in order to welcome more people and reap these benefits, we also need to be welcoming investment in housing – particularly when it helps get new residential supply off the ground.”

Ms Mercorella said that given the current housing crisis it was time for these taxes to be fully phased out.

“With about 36% of people in Queensland living in rental accommo-

override previously agreed contractual arrangements.”

What are we doing to help our landlords?

Our property managers will be reviewing all tenancies to check for any agreements that have a built-in rent increase after the first 6 months, that may fall within the parameters of this new legislation. They will be in touch with all landlords and tenants, who are affected by these changes, to discuss how they will impact both parties.

Our suggestion to you

Moving forward, where possible we recommend you secure 12 month leases for all suitable tenants as choosing to do a 6 month lease will not cancel out the new laws - rent increases will be 12 monthly and apply to all new

dation, the supply of rental properties is crucial, and therefore we need investors – both local and foreign – to make important contributions to the stability of the rental market,” Ms Mercorella said.

“Queensland revenue can offer ex gratia relief where projects enhance the community or the economy,” she explained.

“Given the ongoing housing crisis, surely any projects that provide a roof over the head of Queenslanders and increase much-needed housing stock would meet this criterion.

“We saw that with build to rent projects the government was prepared to offer this relief to large foreign multi nationals investing in that asset class.

“This leads to the danger of a skew towards this asset class when diversity is required to meet the ever-changing demands of Queensland’s growing population.

“Therefore, the REIQ’s view is that it would be appropriate to extend this exemption to all foreign investors, not just foreign pension funds and developers.”

She said that a recent ruling in New South Wales found foreign investment surcharges to be in breach of Commonwealth Double Taxation agreements.

“This ruling also gives weight to the argument that the Queensland Government needs to fully rescind these additional taxes to ensure Queensland aligns with Commonwealth laws and agreements,” Ms Mercorella said.

leases, including lease renewals. What can you do?

The second stage of the rental reforms are now open for public consultation and it is imperative that you and any one who has a stake in a tenancy in Queensland, have your say. Please take the time to read the link and https://yoursay.chde.qld.gov.au/.../ stage-2-rental-law...

ride will head out to Redcliffe travelling back

The Beachmere Hotel officially changed hands last month after being owned by the Comiskey Group for 14 years. The Comiskey Group are well-known for owning some of Australia’s most iconic entertainment venues including Sandstone Point Hotel and Eatons Hill Hotel, as well as the highest selling BIG4 holiday park in Australia, Sandstone Point Holiday Resort.

Before building these large-scale landmark venues, the Comiskey Group built Beachmere Hotel along with its adjacent shopping village and childcare centre in 2009. On April 3, after 14 years of ownership, the Comiskey Group handed over the coastal property to new owners, Venu Hospitality Group. Comiskey Group director Rob Comiskey is sad to see the venue go.

“Going through the process of set tlement has brought back so many fond memories at Beachmere Hotel and has reminded me of how far we have come over the years,” he said. “We are sorry to see the venue go, it has been a great asset. Beachmere Hotel was one of our first pubs so it also holds a lot of sentimental value for my family too, but we are excited to see what Venu Hospitality Group do with the hotel. I’d really like to say a huge thank you to all our staff at Beachmere Hotel, your hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. It’s been a pleasure to work with you all.”

The Venu Hospitality Group is a Brisbane-based owner and operator of hospitality venues across southeast and coastal Queensland. The Beachmere Hotel will join a stable of recognised brands including the Beach House Bar and Grill chain, the iconic Madame Wu on the riverfront in Brisbane’s CBD and Chu the Phat at South Brisbane. The group has also acquired the Pine Beach Hotel at Emu Park, just south of Yeppoon in Central Queensland.

“We thank the Comiskey Group for

the opportunity to become the new custodians of this vital community asset,” Venu Hospitality Group’s Paul Weightman said. “The Beachmere community is anticipated to grow substantially over the medium term and we are delighted to secure such a modern and family friendly asset to add to our portfolio.”

Venu operations director Nick Rosato said there wouldn’t be any major changes to the Beachmere Hotel over the short term, however locals could look forward to an enhanced events program and a refreshed retail offering, with the rebranding of the drive through bottle shop to Liquor Legends.

With major plans for expansion over the next couple of years, the Comiskey Group have already announced more huge projects to come, including Coochin Fields, a 150-hectare festival site and Aura Hotel, the Sunshine Coast’s largest entertainment venue. Some of the other announced ventures include hotels in Strathpine and Dakabin.

the committee and be a part of organising the next ride. The 2023 Moreton Bay Red Ride is on Saturday May 20 and will once again be a scenic ride to spread the word about putting a stop to domestic violence. Not only is he an avid rider for the event, but Randall has also brought his business (Randall Can Fix It Handyman Service) onboard as a sponsor.

A rider for many years, Randall participates in several charity rides throughout the year and will hit the road on his trusty Cruiser motorcycle for the Red Ride.

“Supporting a worthy cause but also just being out there and being part of the biking community is important to me,” Randall says. “With the Red Ride, the reason behind it all – domestic violence – is something we’re seeing more of. I’ve seen a lot of it throughout other people’s families and how it affects people. I also used to go into town on a Friday night giving out food to the homeless and you see people in there that come from a domestic violence background and it's like you can't give all your money to them, but you want to.”

Creating awareness is a big focus of the Red Ride with participants encouraged to wear red or even add the flag featuring the event emblem to their bike.

“We’re changing it up a bit this year by adding the flags, so we are a little bit more identifiable,” Randall says. “That way if anyone out there in their car sees us riding, they’ll be able to tell it’s the Red Ride by the flag.

“It’s so important to try and get as much awareness out there. You see the domestic violence stats coming through all the time of what it’s like out there. If we can help save one person from being in a DV situation, you know you’ve done something. But it’s also the mental side of things as well, where kids see their mum crying all the time or dad upset all the time.

“Another big inspiration for me is thinking about the kids, especially as a young grandfather and I see my grandkids growing

Dayboro and on to Woodford, Peachester and Beerburrum before ending back at the showground where there will be show and shine, entertainment and fun activities.

“It's not just about the ride, it's also about getting people together and to mingle, talk and have some fun,” Randall says. “Come and join in the spanner or helmet toss. Check out the cars and bikes on show, have something to eat or just make a donation if you can. Come along and enjoy the day.”

Along with Randall, other sponsors for the 2023 Red Ride include:

• Division 12 councillor Tony Latter

• Caboolture Rotary Club

• Caboolture Sports Club

• Moreton Bay Regional Council

• 101.5FM

• R&W Caboolture

• Pulse Property Real Estate

Funds raised will be donated to organisations that provide services and support to victims of domestic violence. The Red Ride serves to raise awareness of the issue of domestic violence and to promote a culture of non-violence and respect for all. This is an opportunity for riders to join in on a charity motorbike ride, to hit the open road and raise funds for a great cause.

Don’t miss all the action of the 2023 Moreton Bay Red Ride on Saturday May 20 kicking off at the Caboolture Showground. For further information about the event or to become a sponsor visit redride.org

Charles said his strong will to serve stemmed from connections to the military through those he had lost.

“My two close friends were killed up in New Guinea and my two brothersin-law were taken prisoner there,” he said. “Wally died in the prison camp and the one that came back, Ray, he was a skeleton - just skin and bones.”

Some of Charles’ earliest memories stem from stories of his Uncle Wilfred, who was called up to serve after moving to Australia from England.

“My mother told us a lot about my uncle - he moved my mother and her sister out here from England for the warmer weather and their health,” Charles said.

A change in name for shopping centre

ANZAC Day marks a very special time for Bolton Clarke Bongaree Retirement Village resident and veteran Charles Moon. Charles was eager to join the Navy from a young age and as a teenager during World War II, did everything he could to enlist, regardless of the age limit.

“I was 17 when I wanted to join but you had to be 18. I put my age up but I wasn’t able to get in as I was a truck driver and they needed me because of the manpower shortage,” Charles said. “I eventually joined up in April of 1945. I started in October - after the war had ended - and was in the Navy for 12 years. I started as a torpedo man, but when they changed into separate divisions, I went through as

“They were only here for 12 months and then the war broke out and he got killed, so they lost their brother, who they were very close with of course.”

Now, every year Charles attends the RSL club at Bribie Island to connect with fellow veterans and pay his respects to the loving memories he still holds of those he was close to.

“ANZAC Day isn’t glorifying war,” he said. “Once you lose good friends it’s about paying homage to our lost friends and relatives.

“It’s nice to see everyone with their medals – it brings back memories that you’re proud of.”

Bribie Island Shopping Centre has now become Bribie Island Central. Over the past two years Bribie Island Central has staged improvements to the centre ambience and amenities, to further develop a sense of community belonging and enhance the shopping experience. To complement the evolution of the centre, the fresh new name and brand came into effect from April 19. Changes over the past two years have seen the introduction of new and improved amenities and a parent’s room supporting all members of the community, including new and growing families. A fresh new look Woolworths, with direct to boot service, has been well received by locals and most recently, the centre has installed new furniture for the comfort of shoppers.

“We’re extremely proud to have continually improved the centre offering and ambience for the Bribie Island community,” marketing manager Courtney Sheward said. “We know that the centre is a vital meeting place and plays an important role in bringing a sense of belonging for our tenants’ customers and shoppers. The recent investment has focused on im-

proved convenience, an enhanced offering and comfort for the community.”

To support the evolution of the centre, an opportunity was identified to change the name from ‘Bribie Island Shopping Centre’ to ‘Bribie Island Central’.

“Bribie Island remains a significant part of the name and identity as the location we reside and ‘Central’ represents a vital destination of commerce and community, a central meeting point for locals,” Ms Sheward said. “The look and feel of the four logo marks, represent the natural and lifestyle elements found on Bribie Island and in the Moreton Bay Region.”

Check out more about the new brand at www.bribieislandcentral.com.au/ or via the centre’s social media.

Mum’s Memories

Mother’s Day is one of those special days that we set aside time to be with our precious Mother. Time to talk and share some nice food together. Sometimes old memories form part of the conversations…but at the end of the day there is never enough time to talk about all her wonderful memories.

If you would like to read all about your Mother’s cherished stories… let us write her memoir for her.

The process is simple and most enjoyable. All your Mother needs to do is chat with her own professional writer, who will visit her in the comfort of her own home, simultaneously her precious memoir will be created.

Your Mother will relive moments and events that shaped her life. Her writer will take her down memory lane and hold her hand every step of the way.

What better gift could you give her than the gift of bringing her story to life!

If we don’t share today… tomorrow it is gone, forever!

Why not be the next one to enjoy a journey down memory lane.

It is simply an experience of a lifetime!

Hi Gardeners,

I thought I would start this month’s article off with a quote I came across. “The one who plants trees, knowing he will never sit in their shade, has at least started to understand the meaning of life.” - Rabindranath Tagore

CREATING MAGIC WITH BULBS

Gregg Wallace from MasterChef and The Professionals (an English cooking pro gram) has been doing a weekend away in different countries. For those who travel and enjoy going to gardening festivals, I hope this is of interest to you. As it is time for bulb planting, there is no place like the Netherlands for beautiful bulbs. First, Gregg went to the largest flower auction in the world - the Aalsmeer Flower Auction, where about 43 million flowers are sold daily, an amount which increases on special occasions like Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.

A friendly reminder - don’t forget Mother’s Day!

He then went to a famous Dutch flower parade in the Netherlands, which has a fantastic history. All the floats are made up of spring flowers (for them held usually in April) like tulips.

Plant some bulbs this season and see what happens. Here are a couple of suggestions.

panion plant to reduce aphids and other sap-sucking insects. Garlic is easy to grow and also related to the onion family, except that the bulbs are in clusters of small cloves. The plants grow to approximately 60cm tall with flat, long pointed leaves and bear clusters of white flowers. Plant in autumn to early winter in a well-drained soil.

In last month’s article I spoke about getting ready to plant seeds for Autumn. One of our seed suppliers offered to write an article on their family run business. May I present to you, Jonathan from Ericavale Seeds.

Freesias (above) are part of many childhood memories. They are creamy-white, very fragrant and easily grown, requiring very little if almost no care at all.

Jonquils (above) are cheerful blooms with each stem topped by a cluster of little golden flowers that are like miniature daffodils, but with a darker trumpet. Select your bulbs early in the season so you can choose from the full range. Make sure you buy enough of the same variety to make an impact, remembering that bulbs look best planted fairly close together.

In nurseries now are Garlic bulbs. Garlic is an excellent insect repellent and can be planted with roses and citrus as a com-

Ericavale Seeds is a locally owned and family run seed supplier of rare and unusual varieties of seed. What makes us different is our range of unique and in many cases not commercially grown varieties and our dedication to buying and supporting local. What does this mean? All of our seeds are bought from local growers, local seed houses or grown in house in south east Queensland. Our packaging is printed in Victoria, our display stands are manufactured on the Gold Coast and all of our varieties are hand packed in house on the north side of Brisbane. We visually inspect every spoon of seed put through our foiling machine to ensure that what we supply is quality seed and not husk or other non-seed fill. Further to this, we purchase our seed every season (for the season ahead) to ensure our product is as fresh as possible when foiled and packed to give gardeners the best strike rate and strongest seedlings.

Part of our goal is to keep expanding and tweaking our range based on feedback

from stockists and our gardener base. We are often approached by people searching for childhood favourites or varieties that have, over the years, become obsolete due to new more commercially viable varieties.

In February we introduced four new varieties to our range. An ever-popular Passionfruit, Red Flamenco has been developed to provide unequalled flavour and a large fruit perfect for juicing. Passionfruit can be used to attract bees to the garden or grown to provide an attractive screen to frame your garden or block out unsightly views or neighbours. Seeds can be started in winter indoors ready for a spring transplant. They love full sun and a prepared bed.

Dolphins show their strength

Engine Flushing

The Dolphins have shown once again they deserve to be in the competition after executing the equal biggest comeback in NRL history in their round eight match against the Gold Coast Titans.

It was 25 years ago in round 12 of the 1998 season when the Cowboys came from 26 points down to beat the Panthers.

Down 26-0 after the Titans scored four tries during the first half, it looked dire for the newbies in the competition. But Dolphins fans were rewarded with some epic play when the tables turned and their team crossed the line with five unanswered tries at Suncorp Stadium.

A Euan Aitken try with six minutes left to play gave the Dolphins their first lead of the game and they held on for a famous victory.

The Titans threw everything at the Dolphins in the final five minutes but the Dolphins held on to seal a memorable comeback victory.

All the talk was on Dolphins winger Robert Jennings, who appeared to have what commentators are calling a crazy performance on the field. Jennings scored the try which got the Dolphins on the board, but then somehow failed to get over the line on one occasion and also knocked on denying the Dolphins two tries in the space of five minutes when they were behind 26-18. Minutes later he redeemed himself, crossing in the corner for another try.

The win saw the Dolphins move inside the top eight for the first time in their inaugural season.

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for the Dolphins since being beaten by fellow Brisbane team, the Broncos back in round four. They were beaten by the Dragons 38-12 in round five, managed a cool 10 point win over the Cowboys in Townsville for round six, but struggled against the Bunnies in round seven, going down 36-14.

The Dolphins are back at Suncorp on May 6 up against fellow top eight team, the Cronulla Sharks before they have a bye in round 11. There will be further home ground action when they return to Suncorp on May 20 for their round 12 match against the Melbourne Storm. But no doubt all eyes will be on Redcliffe in round 13, when the Dolphins host the Dragons at Kayo Stadium, hoping to change the result from the last time these two teams met in round five.

As they say in rugby league circles, “Phins up”!

Flushing your outboard or stern drive with fresh water will extend its working life and greatly reduce maintenance costs. It is essential that you purchase the right type and size flushing muffs or flushing attachment for your motor. It is very important they fit correctly to avoid water pump damage. Your local marine dealer will recommend the right type for your motor. It's always a good idea to give your motor a run on the flusher before heading off to the boat ramp. NEVER DRY START YOUR MOTOR.

• Fit the flushing muff.

• Turn the tap on fully.

• Use the shortest possible length of hose to assure maximum water pressure. This is very important on large horsepower engines.

• Let the water run for a couple of minutes before starting the engine.

• After engine start, the water pump tell-tale should be visible about 20 seconds or so after starting. If it’s not, shut the engine off.

The two issues are:

1. The flushing muffs not seated correctly over the water pump inlets.

2. The tell-tale is blocked.

Restart the motor and insert a cleaner into the tell-tale (whipper snipper cord is ideal). This should clear the tell-tale. If not, you are off to your marine mechanic. After your day out on the water the flushing procedure is the same, except run the engine on a fast idle for 7-10 minutes to get as much salt out as possible.

Most importantly

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR ENGINE UNATTENDED WHILE RUNNING. If the muffs slide off or a hose fitting bursts, the results will be water pump damage or engine failure due to overheating. Either way, it will be a very expensive repair.

Remember to check all your safety gear, expiry dates on flares, EPIRBs, spare torch batteries, condition of life jackets etc. HAPPY AND SAFE BOATING, ROGER
