Welcome to Issue 86

We have a wonderful front cover feature article highlighting local lad, Ryan Brockway, who is on his way to stardom on the country music stage. It is incredible what he has already achieved at just 11 years of age. Read more on page 4.

Sharing the love on Valentine’s Day, two local couples show us what true love is made of.

You can have your say on the Bribie bridge, with two community information sessions to be held in Bongaree. See page 10 for more information.

The Bribie bridge is one of our region’s biggest issues. I think the state government should just get on and build a new bridge. What do you think? Let me know by emailing me on belinda@ islandandsurrounds.com.au

As usual we cover a wide variety of local issues, while showcasing our local businesses. It is our local businesses who make this publication possible, so please support them.

Until next month, Warm regards,

Troubled democracies

I would like to comment on the ‘Cranky Lizard Speaks’ about Democracies in trouble.

Democracies are as good as finishedin Australia. From the day Anthony Albanese was elected, he showed he was not interested in running the country, his only interest is ‘The Voice’. We are expected to vote without knowing any of the details of what we are voting for. The devil is in the details. Who would sign a contract without reading the small print? Constitutional lawyers in Western Australia have looked at this and have the opinion that there would be a ‘Prima Facie case’ to put to the High Court to have one direct nominated Aboriginal from each state and territory into parliament. These eight would be nominated by the ALP and would have the same voting rights as any elected MP. Any guess as to who they will support!

When Annastacia Palaszczuk was first elected, people in Queensland had the right to vote optional preferential (tick one box or number every box). One of the first things Palaszczuk did was to remove our democratic right to vote first past the post (tick one box), because ALP research suggested she would have won more seats. Preferential voting is the least democratic form of voting there is. The result as a percentage at the last election in the federal electorate of Brisbane was LNP 38.6%, ALP 27.5%, Greens 26.8%, ON 2%, UAP 1.8% & ASP 1.8%. That was a clear win to the Greens. That means 73.2% of voters didn’t want the Greens, this person is voting on bills before parliament worth billions.

Proposed new Bribie bridge

A new bridge to Bribie could be built from somewhere just south or north of the Toorbul township, without any negative impact of existing residents. The bridge could connect to Bribie somewhere just north of the ranger station or Wrights Creek.

White Patch residents would not be affected in any way, as the road from the bridge would be built along existing surveyed streets north of the village and thence to

Banksia Beach. In any case, residents of Toorbul, White Patch and Banksia Beach will benefit.

The road connection would be from somewhere near the Bestmann Road roundabout across Ningi Creek, mainly through crown land to the Toorbul area. This whole concept is to build a new bridge and reduce the impact on an already overloaded network through Bellara and Bongaree as well as provide for dispersal of traffic and develop an alternative connection to Banksia Beach, First Avenue and Woorim.

To rebuild the road network through Bellara and adjacent localities would be prohibitive and extremely expensive. Just imagine the disruption and congestion! In view of the existing traffic congestion already obvious, surely we need to disperse entry points to the Island.

The whole idea behind this is that no one is disadvantaged and provision is made for further expansion of development.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to both paramedics and Caboolture Hospital staff overall for their care and dedication on my recent trip to hospital. I cannot speak highly enough of the trained staff, whose care of patients was proven to be paramount during my short stay in CCU. Sincere thank you to all.

Mourning the loss of a brewery

A Bribie Isle ‘Oasis’ – no more.

On November 26, 2022 the Bribie Brewery closed its doors and this social outpost on First Avenue was no more.

All of us on this unique island are well aware of the splendid restaurants, clubs and entertainment venues we have rivalling any area in Queensland. We are grateful and proud of them, with ‘The Brewery’ offering a less formal social area of merriment.

After the devastating Covid-forced closure, Mark and Bronwyn Krohn reopened ‘The Brewery’ with a variety of craft beers and other refreshments. The recent shift into the larger premises next door proved a perfect location which oozed character.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings offered guests a convivial and vital atmosphere away from the tough day at the office syndrome. Splendid and varied beer styles never disappointed us, with a monthly food truck serving pasta dishes and pizzas. Yes, the brewery was fast becoming a much-loved institution.

Thank you to the Krohns, for the insight into a contrary entertainment base on our Island.

Who runs the world?

Amelia Strazdins

Who runs the world? Girls! That famous line rings truer than ever on March 8 as we honour all the important women in our lives. International Women’s Day is about celebrating women and their achievements across the globe. It provides a day to acknowledge the triumphs of all women in all aspects of life.

Whilst the March 8 is a day of celebration, this internationally recognised date also assists in raising awareness of the inequalities and injustices that many women still face across the world.

In the year 2023 women continue to have their rights restricted. Restrictions in various countries across the world include limiting access to education, constricting a woman’s ability to vote and accessing adequate and necessary healthcare, just to name a few.

While we find ourselves being thankful for living in Australia and the freedom it provides, it is important to continue to advocate and support change through charities and international organisations who continue to campaign for women’s rights around the world.

In our own country, issues regarding the gender pay gap, the necessity for both maternity and paternity leave and domestic violence concerns, remain prevalent social matters which must not be ignored. Part of embodying and celebrating International Women’s Day is ensuring we continue to support all women and help to address these growing issues. This can be done through volunteering at local women’s shelters as well as donating food, water

and supplies at charities and churches. March 8 is not only about acknowledging the hardships faced by women, but also about showing our appreciation for the women in our lives.

This day of celebration is certainly one that is embraced by the community. With local restaurants and cafes hosting brunches and lunches along with workplace breakfasts fundraisers, it certainly is a date to get behind. Another notable event that garners widespread support is the International Women’s Day Fun Run held in Brisbane. This year, the annual event will be held on Saturday March 12 and provides the perfect opportunity for all members of the family to participate. Whether you run, walk or jog, all participation helps to raise proceeds for breast cancer awareness and research. Supporting women and furthering equality comes in various forms, not just fun runs. Closer to home, this recognition and support stems from inclusive school environments, clubs and community groups. This support may mean going out to watch our local women’s soccer team or having respectful conversations around gender equality and what that means in the year 2023.

At its core, March 8 is a day to celebrate and acknowledge all the wonderful hardworking women in our lives. From our mums to our bosses, teachers to our sisters and close friends who continue to play important roles within our lives, here’s to you. Happy International Women’s Day!

Ryan Brockway is well on his way to becoming a big name in the music industry. At just 11-years-old, this musical youngster (who hails from Morayfield) is already making a name for himself right in the home of country music, Tamworth. From singing on stage to busking and plucking the strings on his guitar, Ryan’s definitely hitting all the right notes in a bid to share the limelight with some of his favourite stars.

Ryan’s striking up a chord

Ryan’s mum Liz (who also doubles as his roadie, manager and everything else in between) surprised him with his first trip to Tamworth in 2022, thanks to a festival date change because of Covid. It quickly became the trip of a lifetime for Ryan, who also managed to come third in The Golden Gig – a talent quest for young budding musicians to perform and show off their skills. Aiming for success once again was at the forefront of Ryan’s mind ahead of the 2023 trip back to the home of the Golden Guitars.

“I came third last year, which I wasn’texpecting at all,” Ryan said of his Golden Gig performance. “This year, it would be really cool if I could win.”

Although not quite the result he was hoping for, Ryan still finished in the top five in this year’s Golden Gig. He’s determined to work even harder throughout 2023, once he’s had a short break and settled back into school.

Ryan picked up his first guitar when he was just four-years-old, but by the age of seven things started getting a bit more serious in the playing stakes. Although some of his skills are self-taught, Ryan also spends time every week with a guitar teacher at the Guitar Exchange. He has built quite a collection over the years, storing each one away as he adds to his line of strings.

Not only does he like to play a tune or two with influences including the likes of Lee Kernaghan, Luke Combs and everybody’s favourite ‘Caboolture boy’ Keith Urban, Ryan also loves to belt out a tune. The last year has been pretty busy for Ryan who has also written and recorded his own song Chipping off the Stone.

“It’s not easy writing a song,” Ryan said. “Getting the words right, feeling them come to me and putting it all together, there’s a bit of work involved and it’s taken a lot of time to get it all down. But I’m really happy and proud with how it’s come about and I look forward to performing it.”

For someone so young, Ryan is already making leaps and bounds as he works his way towards a career in music. While he was in Tamworth in January, he even had the chance to support Lane Pittman of The Voice fame, something he was very excited about. His greatest supporter in everything he does, of course, is his mum.

“I’m so proud of everything Ryan has done. He has worked so hard to get to where he is and I know he’ll continue down this path,” Liz said. “He’s also just launched his own merchandise, because

Ryan performing in Tamworth

we often get people coming up to him and asking about his shirt and wondering where they can buy one. So it definitely gets the attention and we thought why not share it with others.”

Ryan admits nerves are one of the things he struggles with when it comes to performing. Not that you’d notice, because once on the stage he oozes charisma and even likes to crack little jokes with the audience. It seems musical talent runs deep in Ryan’s family, on his mum’s side of course.

“I wouldn’t say it’s directly from me,” Liz said with a laugh. “I’ve played piano and I like to sing. I’m not saying I’m a good singer though! Ryan tried to teach me the guitar, but it didn’t go so well, I can’t even play a chord! But yes, there’s definitely musical talent on my side of the family. My grandfather was a composer and he also played the piano. He was a multi-instrumentalist.”

Just when you think Ryan couldn’t surprise you more, he brings out the big guns, so to speak.

“I can play ‘The Last Post’ on electric guitar,” Ryan said. “It’s one of those tunes that’s really hard to learn on the guitar. There’s a lot of timing involved to get it right and I had to practice it a lot.”

Ryan has been lucky enough to meet and gain advice from the King of country music Lee Kernaghan and also Andrew Farriss of INXS fame, encouraging him to keep doing his best and he’ll go far in the industry.

“You know, it might only be a couple minutes out of their time but for somebody so young, it can mean the world and it’s something they will treasure forever,” Liz said. “There’s always going to be people out there telling you that you can’t do it, but we encourage Ryan to rise above it.”

Even with music a big part of his life, Ryan is also a student at Minimbah State School with his final year of primary school still ahead of him. Long term, with music taking more of a focus, home schooling

now, he’s taking it all in his stride and can’t wait to see what else is ahead of him. If you want to see Ryan in all his music glory, you can actually catch him busking at the Bribie markets in Brennan Park on the third Sunday of each month.

“I’ve been doing it for about six months now,” Ryan said. “Everyone loves listening to me.”

You can follow Ryan’s musical journey via his Facebook page Ryan Brockway Music.

Which is the best boat to buy?

SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 5

With the plethora of boats on the market, it can be overwhelming for boat buyers to choose between all the makes and models of boats on offer. How do you simplify the process of choosing a boat and find the best boat for your needs?

‘What boat should I buy?’ is the most common question I get from boat buyers, whether in the market for a new or used boat. If I had a dollar for every time I was asked that question, I would be a lot richer!

I say there is no perfect boat, however it is possible to buy the perfect boat for your needs. I always ask a potential buyer, ‘what do you want to do with the boat?’. That’s the most important thing to consider, because this will ensure you actually use the boat and it won’t sit in your shed for months on end.

You need to look at what you will use the boat for at least 80% of the time, not the 20% when you plan an annual fishing trip to the cape.

So with this in mind, consider your purpose of owning a boat. Is it going to be used for fishing (inshore or offshore), cruising (day or overnight) or water sports (wakeboarding, skiing) or a combination of these activities?

Ask yourself what do you want to get out of owning a boat? There is a boat for every purpose and different styles of boats have

the hull, interior layout and features designed around these activities. The other important factor to consider is where you plan to use the boat. Are you a freshwater or saltwater fishermen or are you a water sports family who love to spend weekends at Somerset?

For example, a no-fuss tinnie is lightweight and can be used as a car topper or with your caravan. Aluminium tinnies from 3-4 metres are versatile because they can be used in freshwater and inshore and won’t cost you an arm and a leg. But for cruising with the family, you may need a larger fibreglass model from 4-6 metres that offers stability, plenty of seats for the kids and a ski pole. For an offshore fisherman, a larger trailer boat from 5-7 metres, with a cabin or centre console is perfect for handling rough conditions and gives you access around the boat when you’re fishing.

At Brisbane Yamaha we specialise in trailer boats and we have hundreds of models to choose from. Once you’re clear on how you plan to use the boat, you need to decide whether a fibreglass boat or aluminium boat is best suited to this purpose. Also, we always ask potential boat buyers if this is their first boat purchase and their level of experience, as this is important in deciding the size of boat and where it will be used.

Then you will need to think about your budget, how you’re going to pay for the boat and if you’re in the market for a new boat or a pre-loved gem that still has plenty of years left in it. The other

consideration is where the boat will be stored, as this will determine the size of the boat and if it is a practical choice for you. The length, width and height of your storage space is a key factor in the size of boat best suited to you. Below are the key factors to consider when buying a boat:

1. Purpose – What will you use the boat for (cruising, fishing, water sports etc)?

2. Budget – How much are you willing to spend, and do you want to finance the boat?

3. Location – Where will you primarily use the boat (fresh or salt water)?

4. Storage – Where will you store the boat when not in use?

5. Experience – What is your boating experience?

Think about these factors, then visit a dealership and look at all the different types of boats. This will save time and money in the long run. It will also help you visualise how you’ll use the boat most of the time. Most importantly, buy the boat that you will use for the majority of the time, not that special once a year trip. . That way your boat won’t spend its life in the shed!

The team at Brisbane Yamaha have years of experience in all areas of boating, including the best outboard to purchase. That’s why we say, ‘we know boats’! We try to make the boat buying process as simple as possible so you find the perfect boat for your needs.

No recycling at Bribie Island Caravan Park

As a tenant at Bribie Island Caravan Park, I am deeply dismayed by the non-existence of recycling within the park. The only things recycled are refundable bottles and cans. With the high volume of transient visitors (e.g. short stay), it is depressing to know that all recyclable waste is placed in garbage bags, put in the garbage skip bins and then into landfill. Despite my requesting management to do something about this, my requests have been ignored. I have also approached Moreton Bay Regional Council regarding this matter. Can you please help me. I can provide photographic proof.

Sharing the love this Valentine’s Day

Love is in the air! It would seem our beautiful Island and surrounds are places very much filled with stories of love and romance. When I reached out to the community to hear some of your special stories ahead of Valentine’s Day, many of you were keen to share your love with others. Proving love can conquer anything, here are two stories that will definitely have you saying “Awwwww”.

Trish and James Howarth

From Ningi and now living in D’Aguilar

For Trish and James, their love story spans many decades. It all started back in 1969-70 when the couple dated for almost two years, but then split and went their separate ways. Trish was heartbro ken but eventually moved on, married someone else and had seven children! James also married someone else and had two sons.

“I’d often looked to see if he was on Facebook, but only found one of his brothers that had moved to Queensland and lived nearby to the Westpac branch I’d just been transferred to,” Trish said. “His children were in the local pony club and on my first day at the branch, a fellow came in to bank the pony club money. We got to chatting and he happened to be James’ brother’s best mate. Appar ently a lot of messages were exchanged that New Year’s Eve in 2014. I walked into work on Friday January 2 and answered the phone to find it was the love of my life on the other end. I hadn’t seen or heard from him in 44 years. After an awkward conversation we agreed to stay in touch. By the end of January we drove half way to meet up, James from Cootamundra and me from Ningi. All went well, he came to Queensland for six weeks, we dated and eventually moved in together. In December 2016, we married and it’s been bliss ever since.”

Helen and Kevin Cornish From Bongaree

Before meeting Kevin, Helen had just left a convent boarding school and moved from her family’s rural property to live with her strict Catholic grandmother in Kingaroy. Her interaction with the opposite sex was limited. The day before she was due to start a new job in a fashion retail store, Helen found herself at the local swimming pool trying to cool off on a very hot day.

“As I stood in the shallow end of the swimming pool watching the teenage boys chasing the scantily clad girls around the pool, I was in disbelief at their brazen behavior,” she said. “One guy in particular sparked my interest ... his tiny white Speedos leaving nothing to my imagination (which was very limited at that point). Suddenly he spotted me and jumped in beside me. I was not amused and thought of the stories I had been told by the nuns trying to divert my eyes. Hurriedly leaving the pool I dressed and began my walk to grandma’s home.”

An FJ Holden with the cheeky guy at the wheel (and a few of his mates) pulled up beside Helen as she walked home and asked if she wanted a lift. Despite politely declining their offer, they continued to ask until she arrived back at her grandmother’s house.

“The next day whilst being trained in the store, the same young man walked past to the Woolworths store next door, he was wearing overalls and I soon realised he was the refrigeration mechanic,” Helen

said. “He walked backwards and forwards giving flirty smiles much to my disbelief. Of course that afternoon he was waiting out the front and once again he asked if I would like a lift home and once again the answer was no thank you!”

It seems Kevin wasn’t going to give up easily and continued his path of wooing Helen for the next week until finally asking her why she wouldn’t take up his offer of a lift.

“My reply was that I didn’t know him and I had not been introduced,” she said. “The following week he arranged for a girl I worked with to introduce us and then of course asked me again if I would let him at least drive me home. I reluctantly took the lift ... the beginning of a long love story. Of course, a request for a movie date followed but that required my grandmother’s permission. He arrived to take me out with his periwinkle shoes, long sleeved white shirt football, cuff links, a Fonzie hair style and smelling

like old spice aftershave. Little did he know that a decade of the rosary was required before leaving for our date and strict instructions to come directly home after the movie.”

The couple were engaged after two years and married four years after they met. This year is their 55th wedding anniversary (February 3) and Helen’s birthday falls on February 14.

“We started with nothing, worked two jobs each whilst raising our two children,” Helen said. “We lived in remote mining locations in Papua New Guinea, on Groote Island and all over Queensland. We now have seven adult grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and after travelling Australia for seven years in our caravan, we have made our home here in paradise. Two lots of cancer and a brain tumour and that cheeky flirty guy is still picking me up, but thankfully the white Speedos have gone.”

Bribie Bridge Update - Community Consultation Starts

It is excellent news! The building of a business case to support the proposal for building a new bridge for Bribie is well underway. Now, it is the community’s turn to have their say and show their support for a new bridge, why they need it and most importantly, what they want.

The Department of Transport and Roads (TMR) is undertaking a community survey to form an essential part of the business case and is expected to be completed by early 2024 with the concept design work taking place in 2023. Part of the planning includes deciding what the new bridge will look like and what to do with the old bridge. Should we keep it and add an

additional two-lane bridge with improved pedestrian and bike access or put a new four-lane bridge in place? The downside is that if we keep the existing bridge it will have to be replaced sometime in the future. The ultimate answer is likely to be driven by the many technical considerations and assessments currently being made to assist with planning. The government has not yet committed to upgrading or building a new bridge. Completing a business case is the next step in seeking funding and prioritising the project against other State Transport Infrastructure Projects.

Have your say and show your support for a new bridge

The project team want to hear your comments and ideas, both positive and negative, regarding the bridge. You may have concerns over wildlife, disability access or be worried about changes to the road. You may have ideas about the inclusion of indigenous culture or the effects on businesses, issues regarding pedestrian access to and across the bridge, continued fishing access or even the height of a possible new bridge. So many aspects to consider.

Completing the survey is your one chance to have your say, so give it a

go, it is easy. It took me 5-10 minutes at most.

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and con-

Van Daalen recognised for her achievements

If you have been involved in athletics locally, chances are you have come across coach Anne Van Daalen. A love of athletics and helping others grow in the sporting domain has propelled Van Daalen to cover a big portion of the region in her coaching role. Her passion and dedication has also seen Van Daalen recognised by Athletics Australia during their Coach Appreciation Month in December.

Based in the Elimbah/Caboolture area, Van Daalen first started at the Caboolture Amateurs Athletics Club before becoming involved in the Track and Field Excellence Program at Grace Lutheran College. Last year, she also coached the GSP Running Club at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School. Through working in sporting schools and volunteering at various clubs Van Daalen has worked in different areas including the likes of Caboolture, Wamuran, Beer burrum, Bribie Island and surrounding areas.

Originally from South Africa, Van Daalen admits athletics was always her favourite sport as a youngster, with her love for running and athletics growing more as she got older. Her foray into the coaching world came about after discovering a need for more females in the coaching domain. “We moved to Australia 14 years ago and I started to get more involved with coaching when we moved to Queensland in 2015,” Van Daalen said. “I was listening to the radio while driving in the car one day when they announced the results of a youth sports survey, specifically about girls’ participation in sports. One of the reasons why teenage girls are leaving sport at a much faster rate than boys is because there is a shortage of female coaches. Being a parent to a daughter it really hit home and inspired me to get my coaching qualification in Australia.” Van Daalen completed her Level 1 and 2

young kids and helping them reach their goals gives Van Daalen a great sense of pride and achievement.

“I absolutely love working with the youth and I’m very passionate about it,” Van Daalen said. “I love both coaching at grassroots level, teaching younger athletes the skills they need, as well as writing programs for my older athletes, helping them to reach their PBs, goals and dreams. Seeing kids improving or mastering skills, growing in confidence, enjoying sport and reaching their goals gives me great joy. I’m also really passionate about keeping kids active. It’s important for kids to engage in sport from a young age as it sets them up for a lifetime of healthy living, even if they don’t get to the Commonwealth Games or Olympic level. Participating in sport improves physical and mental well-being, building self-esteem, confidence, lasting friendships and so much more.”

In late 2022, Van Daalen was recognised and appreciated by Athletics Australia for her hard work and effort. Coach Appreciation Month takes place in December and athletes can nominate their coach with Athletics Australia choosing those lucky enough to receive the nod.

“I’m honoured to receive this recognition and it inspires me even more,” Van Daalen said. “I’m very grateful for the wonderful kids whom I have coached over the years and their families.”

Even after spending years helping so many kids, Van Daalen still recalls one of her favourite moments from throughout her career thus far.

“One of my favourite memories is of a teenage boy who asked me to help him improve his triple jump,” she said. “His favourite sport was basketball and his dream was to be chosen for representative basketball. We worked together and improved his triple jump by almost a metre. The great thing about it was that

Being part of someone’s journey to accomplish their dreams is very rewarding. One of the great things of being an athletics coach is you can also help kids improve their performance in other sports like basketball, soccer, rugby, AFL, NFL etc. It is very satisfying for me to see kids reach their goals in sports

BreastScreen Queensland mobile service back on Bribie Island

Ladies, are you due for a breast screening? Now is the perfect opportunity to get it done with BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service back on Bribie Island until February 24. This time, with a brand new van. The van, which will be parked outside the Bribie Island Library, is equipped with a state-of-the-art breast screening machine and is a fresh and more spacious version of the previous model.

“The machine on board is the same as the ones at Nambour Hospital and all our other BreastScreen services, including our Caboolture site,” chief radiographer Shane Judd said.

“Women having a breast screen can be assured of the same high-quality service, whether they visit the van or one of our other locations around the local region.”

The design on the outside of the van has also been updated, but still includes the beautiful artwork by local Aboriginal artist, Yvonne Williams, entitled ‘Women Gathering’.

BreastScreen Queensland provides free breast cancer screening for women 40 years and over. Women aged 50 – 74 years are also strongly encouraged to have a breast screen every two years.

There are appointments on offer at the Bribie mobile service from 7.30am,

so women have the opportunity to book an appointment before work. Appointments take less than 30 minutes and no doctors’ referral is needed.

“Women should book ahead to make sure they can get an appointment at a time that best suits them,” Ms Judd said.

Make a booking by calling 13 20 50 or visit breastscreen.qld.gov.au

THE FACTS:

75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. Younger women do get breast cancer, but the risk of breast cancer increases dramatically after the age of 50.

• 9 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have NO family history of the disease. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, most women diagnosed have no family history of the disease at all.

• A breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can feel anything.

U3A Beachmere 2023 and beyond

As 2022 becomes a fading memory, we look forward to embracing 2023 with a fresh and optimistic gaze. Like schools, businesses and other community organisations, U3A Beachmere is well-advanced in planning the implementation of Term 1, 2023.

U3A Beachmere offers new and existing members the opportunity to socially engage with fellow residents and build new friendships, whilst learning new skills. Course offerings this year will focus around the core themes of:

• Well-being and mental stimulation

• Computers and technology

• Arts and crafts

• Gentle sport and exercise

• Music and music appreciation

Participants are lead through course activities by tutors experienced in that specific field who aim to create a friendly, non-competitive environment for people to share experiences and develop new skills and awareness. There are no quizzes or exams, with the only expectations focussed around knowledge sharing and having fun.

Our small and isolated community needs U3A Beachmere. If you value the direct and indirect services provided by U3A and wish to see course offerings continue throughout 2023 and beyond, the current committee needs your help!

Become a member, enrol in a course and if, at all possible, support the organisation and community by volunteering a small percentage of your time.

The current committee will be standing down at the Annual General Meeting to be held on Monday, March 13 at 1 pm.

We are looking for members to take on committee roles, especially president and volunteer coordinator. You don’t need any specific experience other than an interest in helping your community.

2022 Queensland Vacancy Rates end on a low note

While market pressures have pinned Queensland vacancy rates down during 2022, REIQ data released shows the year has ended with a slight uplift across the state.

Of the 50 local government areas and sub regions covered in the REIQ’s Residential Vacancy Rate Report for the December 2022 Quarter, 43 experienced a vacancy rate rise compared to the previous quarter, while the remaining seven were static. The state-wide vacancy rate rose from 0.6% in the September quarter to 0.8% to close the year, at an improved yet still critically low rate.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella welcomed the momentary relief but said vacancy rates were still far too low to be considered ‘healthy’ and it was too early to draw conclusions that there is a material shift in the rental market.

“Promising as this news may seem, we’re taking it with a grain of salt until we see if this is uplift is here to stay or if it’s merely a seasonal fluctuation,” Ms Mercorella said.

“Tiny movements, however hopeful, should not be overanalysed. What this essentially means is the market is holding tight, and only time will tell if a trend is emerging.

“An influx of rental property changeovers at the end of the year is certainly not a new phenomenon, and the past decade of vacancy rates reveals patterns of generally

higher vacancies in December.

“However, the REIQ is hearing from property managers that there is noticeably less exit and entry activity than usual, as there’s still plenty of tenants that are staying put and choosing to renew their lease rather than compete for a new place.

“Even with this small improvement in rates, let’s not forget that we’re still talking about incredibly low vacancy figures which tells us there’s no-where near enough rental properties to meet demand, and tough conditions continue for tenants.”

While upward movements in most areas stayed between 0.1 – 0.3%, Redland’s Bay Islands rose by 1.8% to a considerably weak vacancy rate of 6.0 %, and Mount Isa was a standout lifting by 1.1 % to 2.4 % – teetering on the edge of ‘healthy’.

Other regional areas which saw vacancy rates relax substantially over the quarter were Gladstone (1.6%), Mackay (1.0%), Townsville (1.0%) and neighbouring Burdekin (1.1%), Central Highlands (0.9%), Isaac (1.7%), Lockyer Valley (0.8%), and Maranoa (0.9%).

Similarly, tourism areas which welcomed markedly more residential vacancies in the December quarter, were Hervey Bay (1.1%) and Fraser Coast (0.9%).

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast rates barely budged, both now sitting at 0.7 per cent, and there was no relief whatsoever for the Caloundra Coast (0.7%), Maroochy Coast (0.4%) or Sunshine Coast Hinterland (0.4%) which includes towns

such as Maleny, Nambour and Eumundi. With no surprises on the list, the regions that took out the tightest vacancy rates in the state were Southern Downs (0.2%), Cook (0.3%), Goondiwindi (0.3%) and Tablelands (0.3%).

Ms Mercorella said the REIQ’s expectation is that this year will bring more of the same stubbornly tight conditions for the Queensland rental market.

“It’s likely that 2023 will be a case of – New year, same rental pressures,” she said.

“Our state will continue to feel the impact of population growth with very strong interstate migration as well international migration including students set to return in force to the southeast corner.

“This increased demand will continue to apply pressure to an already strained rental market.

“Queensland is crying out for additional housing supply to ease the tight conditions, but building costs and planning red tape are putting the brakes on new construction, while higher costs, more challenging lending conditions, and reduced legislative rights are deterring vital private property investment.

“This report has delivered some fleeting good news, but we’re certainly not at a turning point yet, and with these economic factors continuing to apply pressure, it’s hard to see any significant changes in sight.”

FAST FACTS: DECEMBER QUARTER 2022

• Queensland Vacancy Rate: 0.8%

• Tightest Vacancy Rate: 0.2% (Southern Downs), followed by 0.3% (Cook, Goondiwindi, Tablelands)

• Highest Vacancy Rate: 6.0% (Redland’s Bay Islands), followed by 2.4% (Mount Isa)

• Biggest fall: No falls this quarter

• Biggest rise: +1.8% (Redland’s Bay Islands), followed by +1.1% (Mount Isa)

The REIQ classes rental markets into three categories, tight, healthy, or weak. These markets are classified according to vacancy rates:

• 0 – 2.5% = tight

• 6 – 3.5% = healthy

• 6% – plus = weak

GARDEN WITH

Jill

Hi Gardeners,

I hope you are all happy and healthy.

I love watching movies and going to the movie theatre. A couple of weeks ago I watched a movie on the life of Doris Duke, who was once called the ‘richest girl in the world’. She was an intelligent independent lady who liked to travel the world, advocating for the protection of the environment, anonymously gifting more than $400 million dollars.

James Buchanan Duke initially transformed 2000 acres in Hillsborough, New Jersey into a spectacular wonderland by creating nine manmade lakes, 18 miles of roads and 45 buildings, including what is known as Duke Farms. James’s daughter Doris inherited his love of orchids.

Whilst on your world travels, some of you gardeners out there may have visited Duke Farms, which is an orchid lover’s paradise. The ‘Orchid Range’ has two main tropical and sub-tropi cal orchid displays, with 1300 varieties on display.

Orchids

Now the pleasure begins!

Phalaenopsis a Greek word meaning moth like in appearance. They orig inate from the hot tropic areas of Java through to the Philippines to the northern tip of Australia. The Austra lian variety, Phalaenopsis Amabilis var. Nosenstromil, was discovered in 1907 growing high in the treetops of the Daintree River.

They prefer 70-80% more shade than other orchids and can be grown indoors provided you have the above amount of shade. Humidity should be 60-70%, which is normal in this area. You can create your own humidity by placing the plant on a tray filled with gravel and water. Shade houses are not their favourite place. They prefer being grown outside in summer and inside the house in winter.

As they don’t have bulbs and store their water reserves in their leaves, it is best not to let them dry out. Water as soon as the orchid mix starts to dry out which in summer is every two or three days and in winter once a week.

Once flowering, make sure you stake the plant right up to the top of the flower. You can fertilize with a liquid feed at half strength every week in summer and less in winter. There are slow-release fertilizers you can use, make sure you use at the recommended dosage.

Cattleya orchids are often seen in bridal bouquets or corsages. They

will grow in a semi-shaded area, like under a pergola. Water from the top, soaking the pot and spray the leaves. Ensure good drainage allowing the pot to dry out rapidly. Usually re-pot every three years when the orchid is too large for its pot. Once re-potted use mancozeb to seal any cuts when dividing out the rhizomes.

Cymbidium orchids enjoy sitting under a tree with about 50% light otherwise they won’t flower. Keep the pots off the ground to help with air circulation and drainage, preventing fungi and bacterial problems and stopping worms or grubs getting into the potting mix.

Water in the evenings during spring and early autumn and in the mornings in late autumn, winter and early

spring – usually once a week. These are great to bring inside the home for a wonderful display of colour.

Dendrobium orchids love to grow in a shade house and derive from Australian natives like the King Orchid. Hard cane like the Cooktown Orchid and soft cane like the Nobile who like to grow in trees. Shade them during the hottest time of the day, but give them plenty of light. Allow plenty of heat and moisture when growing, however cooler and drier conditions once the growth has finished for the season. You will know this when they do not produce any new leaves at the apex. Deciduous varieties will lose their leaves but evergreen should

Summer whiting are still plentiful on the incoming tide at Sandstone Point, with bloodworms the best choice of bait. Some nice bream have also been caught in the

Skirmish Point

Early mornings have proven fruitful for anglers using pilchards as bait, as school

Troll shallow diving lures along the edges of the weed banks to snare flathead, which are plentiful. Mud crabs are in abundance in the canals.

Rivers, estuaries and salty lagoons are some of the waterways that line the southeast of Queensland.

Fishing in the Pumicestone Passage lends itself to a range of lure types that are fun to use and techniques that challenge your skills.

Here are a few effective ways to lure your local waterways.

• Casting small surface lures

When the prawns start running anglers can enjoy excellent fishing using surface lures. Small poppers and stick baits work well on light gear. The bassday sugapen 70 is a popular version working well on whiting and bream. A light spin outfit 2-5kg, light braid with a 1000–2500 size reel is ideal.

• Casting small crank baits

A fun way to procure a variety of species. With numerous options on the market, small cranks including minnows, fat bodied and slim longer lures 35-110mm in length. I have always found it is best to carry a range of lures that include shallow, medium and deep divers, using the same gear as small surface. Flathead, bream and trevally are all keen to smash a crank.

• Casting soft plastics

Many anglers are familiar with soft plastic

The key is to select a jig-head that suits the plastic and location for fishing. Tiny 50mm plastics are received well by bream. Bigger models are popular for working the drop offs and deeper holes for larger flathead, mulloway and mangrove jacks. Plastics work well with added scent which enhances their effectiveness

Enjoy your fishing and remember to only catch what you need!
