Happy New Year and welcome to the first Local paper for 2023 and Issue 85.

As usual, this Issue brings us some very interesting articles. One is a wonderful story about a local lady, Judi Waller, who has published her first book at age 87 with more exciting writing still to come.

The Bribie Island bridge turns 60 this year. Our talented feature writer Sheree Hoddinett has put together some interesting facts, for example when and how it was constructed. Did you know at the time it was built, the bridge was the longest prestressed, pre-cast concrete bridge in Australia?

In May this year all women are invited to once again participate in the ‘Women’s Fishing Classic’ for the third year in a row.

The Brennan Park upgrade is now complete and looks incredible, with some new added features making it a family friendly destination on Bribie.

We also have an article about changing the eastern seaboard time zone, not daylight saving, just standardising time zones across the eastern seaboard all year round. Let us know what you think after reading this article from our local writer Alistair Gray.

As usual, we cover a wide variety of local issues, while showcasing our local businesses. It is our local businesses who make this publication possible, so please support them.

Until next month, Warm regards, Belinda

Leave us alone

Love your Local paper!

Regarding the Letter to the Editor from Ray of Bribie Island - to construct a bridge across to Toorbul from White Patch.

Consider the distance across the passage which is almost three times that of the existing bridge, who would pay? Certainly not council or state government, they cannot service our existing roads.

Please leave our precious little town alone and also the people at White Patch. Just duplicate the existing bridge to the highway via the bypass of Ningi, as promised by previous governments.

What part of Bribie do you live Ray? Obviously not where the new roads would have to go.

Leave us all alone.

Clem

A custom or a holiday?

I was horrified by Richard Lancaster’s suggestion that Australia was following the US once again with some people trying to banish Christmas. In schools children should learn about whatever customs are applicable to their population.

I am not a Christian, but I do appreciate the joy of singing Christmas carols for the entertainment of the community. And it is great to see the faces of happy children and adults who know that someone cares for them at this time of giving.

This is a multicultural country, even if our Parliament opens with Christian prayers. So instead of banning religious celebrations, with the loss of benefits to communities and businesses alike, we should follow the example of the UAE and celebrate all the religions.

Community groups already celebrate Diwali, Hanukah and Paniyiri even if workers are not granted a holiday. So perhaps it should be the holidays which should be banished, not the religious/cultural activities. Sundays are no longer sacrosanct!

Fair dinkum, it’s Australia Day

Throw a snag or lamb chop on the barbie, take a dip in the pool or even spend a lazy day at the beach with a game of cricket thrown in, there’s so much you can do on Australia Day. However if you haven’t made any plans and you’re looking for somewhere to go on January 26, there’s a lot happening on and around the Island plus a little bit further afield if you’re up for the drive.

Celebrate by the water with some festivities and free family fun from 5pm at Brennan Park. There will be live music, games, food trucks and a sausage sizzle. At 7pm, fireworks (proudly presented by the Moreton Bay Regional Council) will be let off from two different barge locations, so set yourself up somewhere along the passage foreshore to get the best view.

How fast can you peel a kilo of prawns? Bribie Bowls is playing host to an Australia Day Prawn Peeling Challenge. Check out bribiebowls. com for all the info!

Don’t miss the Australia Day Bingo $7000 Super Session at Caboolture Sports Club. There will also be raffles and lamingtons in the mix. You can also Snag a Winner in another club competition.

Head over to Scarborough for the afternoon with Music in the Park. From 1pm-6pm, there will be live music, food trucks, market stalls and plenty of fun for the kids.

North Lakes Sports Club will have Australia Day festivities kicking off from 10.30am. There will be games, music, promo draws, pop up local brewers and a food truck and heaps of prizes to be won!

If all else fails and you just want to enjoy a relaxing day in true Aussie style, just grab a cool drink, a few snacks and enjoy some quiet time at home!

**Please check with individual venues for further event information.**

Sunday Worship is moving

The Sandstone Community Church (SCC) which currently meets in the Sandstone Point Community Hall is moving their 3pm Sunday Worship Service and Children & Youth program to the Ningi Hall, 1320 Bribie Island Road, Ningi as it is more suited to current needs. All other activities such as Monday Craft Group and Thursday Mainly Music will continue at Sandstone Point.

The church is grateful to the Sandstone Point Community Assoc. for their support and management of the hall at Sandstone Point since the establishment of the church in 2013 to minister primarily to the communities of Sandstone Point, Godwin Beach, Ningi and Beachmere.

While SCC is an associate church of Queensland Baptists, Christians of all denominations as well as those seeking to know more, are welcome.

own words, “I never ever thought I would become a pastor. My life was a mess, full of bad choices and addictions. But once I heard the gospel, everything began to change. It’s like I became a new man. The direction of my life changed most dramatically.”

In 2016, Steven completed a Bachelor of Theology at Queensland Theological College and has a wide range of ministry experience. He has been serving as our pastor for almost a year now and says, “Though pastoring certainly comes with weighty responsibilities, I know this is my calling. I have good news to tell people, a message of hope to proclaim and I will never stop.”

The Pretsel family are truly pleased to be serving the church and community. They have been involved in local churches for well over a decade and know firsthand the positive impact they can have on the surrounding areas.

At SCC we love to bring the community together. The Carols on the Oval event is a recent example of that. We love to keep in touch with the locals, hearing their stories and helping practically where we can. Though currently we’re only a small church by today’s standard, the love and unity within our community is large and growing. One goal of SCC is that our presence in the neighbourhood will benefit the people in their day-to-day lives and give them great encouragement and hope.

The Pastor of SCC, Steven Pretsel, is married to Carissa and has four children. Originally from North Brisbane, he and the family spent a few years in Singleton New South Wales church planting and serving in the local Baptist church before moving back up to Queensland in December 2021.

Steven has a background in panel beating, tree-lopping and landscaping and in his

The final service at Sandstone Point will be a time of celebration and thanksgiving in a ‘Café Church’ style on January 29 at 3pm.

The first service in Ningi Community Hall will be Sunday February 5 at 3pm.

We invite everyone to join us.

Returning for its third year is the Women’s Fishing Classic (Saturday May 6 - Saturday June 3), an all-ladies fishing competition open to every female recreational angler from every age and skill level. The brainchild of Nicole Robinson, the fishing competition is the first of its kind in southeast Queensland and came about to give women the opportunity to broaden their fishing horizons and also spread the word about what women can achieve in the fishing domain.

Fishing is a sport still often associated with males and women remain a small minority, but Nicole is working

Competitors of all ages can take part in the Women’s Fishing Classic. out to sea. The competition does cover a vast area so if you aren’t sure on the locations, please double check with organisers.

Even if you do not catch the biggest fish or any fish at all, you’re still in with a chance of winning the major prize just by entering the competition (all competitors must be at the presentation to be eligible for this).

10% from the sale of each ticket goes to Nicole’s chosen charity of SunnyKids, which follows the idea it takes a village to raise a child, providing

hard to bring about change and help women realise that they can do it too.

“For the past couple of years my aim has been and it still continues to be about encouraging likeminded females to just give it a go,” she said. “I have been fishing for many years and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know everything there is to know about fishing but I love getting out there and giving it a go.”

The last two years of the Women’s Fishing Classic have already proven to be successful and Nicole would love to see even more women come on board this year.

“You don’t need to be an expert at fishing to join in,” she said. “And you don’t even have to go out on a boat, you can fish from the shore as well. We’d love to see mums and daughters, sisters, grandmothers too if they’re up for it! It’s about getting out there, having fun, sharing the love of the sport with other like minded anglers and you may just land yourself a good catch as well.”

Through her interest in fishing and a

will to encourage and inspire others, Nicole has seen other women form new bonds and connections.

“Through fishing I’ve helped create this lovely community of women who had never met each other and who are now friends,” Nicole said. “This competition is also a great opportunity for women who like to do a bit of fishing but don’t have a partner that likes fishing or don’t have a partner at all but they have all the gear to get out. They might not have any female friends to go fishing with or any friends in general who like to fish, so there’s every chance they will meet some others doing the same thing.”

The Women’s Fishing Classic is on from Saturday May 6 through until Saturday June 3. It is open to all female anglers from all ages and skill levels with juniors (aged 4-15) to be accompanied by a senior competitor. You can fish in saltwater, freshwater, from a boat or a kayak, on the shore and using bait/lures. Competitors are able to fish anywhere from Inskip Point (but not Fraser Island) down to the Tweed River with offshore competitors able to compete up to 70km

For Judi Waller, publishing her first book at the age of 87 has proven to be quite an achievement. The Tales End is a mixture of pieces including poetry and short stories, as well as personal recounts of different events that have taken place in Judi’s life. Although she has dabbled in writing throughout her life, Judi never imagined she would become a published author. Taking that first step has given Judi the encouragement she needed to continue writing, with work already underway on an autobiographical book.

Judi’s many life experiences, including growing up in London during World War II, have certainly shaped her as a person and her memory recall is amazing to say the least. Putting her memories, thoughts and creativity into words all led to The Tales End coming to life.

“I had written a lot of little bits and pieces over the years, everywhere I go, I write things down,” Judi said. “But I’ve never had the courage to do anything with them in terms of getting something published. I did think a lot about whether my writing would be good enough, everyone is their own worst critic.

With a lot of encouragement from others and with the help of Disruptive Publishing, it all happened. I’m pretty chuffed about it all. Plus, it's nice for the people that are around me, like my family, who can read about the things I have been through and also some of the stories I have created.”

The Tales End has certainly been a work in progress, culminating in bits and pieces over a period of about 20 years. The book also has some input from other family

members, with Judi’s grandchildren also contributing a few pages here and there. Plus her son is also the brains behind the creative illustrations, matching their respective stories perfectly.

“There’s one story in there I wrote about my grandson Craig who committed suicide,” Judi said. “I needed to put something into words which helped me work through what happened because it was a difficult time.”

Judi was about five-years-old and living in London with her family at the time World War II broke out. For someone who was so young, she can remember quite a lot about what happened and she’s using these memories to create her next book, an autobiography, a keepsake for her children to understand what she went through at the time and to share with others.

“I can remember being terribly, terribly frightened,” Judi says of the war. “I wanted to put something into words because they wouldn’t know what it’s like to be running to get to an air raid shelter. Or the noise of the doodlebugs flying over the top of us and not knowing where it was going to hit. I can remember my father digging out a big dugout in our backyard. I can remember the council coming along and putting sheds all along the street, with long benches for everyone to sit on. It was no better than being in the house but we did what we had to at the time.”

Judi and her family moved out to Australia in 1949, seeking a better and different way of life. She has lived in various towns and cities along the east coast over the years and undertaken many different job paths including one in nursing. There’s not a lot she hasn’t done, so adding published author to her list is another amazing feat for this proud mum, grandmother and great-grandmother. The way she eloquently recounts her past personal experiences, it feels as though Judi was always meant to be a storyteller. But of course, she takes it all in her stride.

“I wouldn’t say I have a passion for writing,” she said. “I think it was more of an interest in putting down my thoughts. Memories can be hard to hang on to. I often go back through my old files before I throw them out and I’ll see letters that I’ve written in the course of business and I think how did I write that? You don’t realise that some of the things you write can actually be quite informative.”

Judi’s book The Tales End is available through Disruptive Publishing. For more information visit www.disruptivepublishing.com.au

60 years of the Bribie Island bridge

While the topic of a second Bribie bridge still remains at the forefront of our minds, it’s time to take a little trip down memory lane. This year marks 60 years of the current/one and only Bribie bridge and what a journey it has been.

When the Bongaree Jetty was built in 1912, visitors to the Island would travel by boat. A number of steamships including the Koopa and Doomba transported people from Brisbane to the Island. When car travel became more popular in the 1940s, a car/passenger ferry service was used between Bribie and Toorbul Point. Being able to transport vehicles to the Island resulted in a hive of infrastructure activity and more homes being built.

The idea of a bridge to Bribie Island had been discussed for many years and on November 17, 1959 came an official

announcement that the bridge would be built. The construction took almost two years with about 40 men involved in the building of the bridge, thankfully no lives were lost or any major injuries reported at the time.

Spanning 2736 feet (831.4 m) the bridge cost $716,321 to build and with a 10 shilling toll, the bridge officially opened on Saturday October 19, 1963 by the then premier of Queensland, Frank Nicklin.

The first toll ticket was purchased by Premier Nicklin and the last toll ticket was purchased by Bribie resident Stan Balmer on March 22, 1975. Jack Greenhalgh was the Toll Master for the duration of the toll period October 20, 1963 to March 22, 1975. The popularity of visiting the Island definitely showed in how quickly the toll was paid off!

At the time it was constructed, the bridge was the longest pre-stressed, pre-cast concrete bridge in Australia. There are 104 beams each weighing 18 tons. The beams of pre-stressed concrete are each 21.9m long and 1.4m deep. At the centre of the bridge there is also a clearance of 7.3m at low tide to cater for small craft. Bribie Island bridge consists of two traffic lanes and a pedestrian pathway.

Over the years there have been several anniversary celebrations held for the Bribie Island bridge which today remains the only road link between the Island and the mainland.

Were you living on the Island before and after the bridge was built and would love to share your story and/or photos too? Please get in touch with us via stories@ islandandsurroundsnews.com.au

Mental health support impacted by cutbacks

Disappointment has been expressed by Member for Longman Terry Young over a recent federal government announcement that additional Medicare-subsidised psychology sessions introduced by the Coalition for mental health support for vulnerable Australians are being cut in half. The sessions were initially doubled through the Better Access initiative from 10 to 20 in response to supporting Australians facing tough times.

With many families facing the impact of the cost of living and energy bills sky rocketing, along with the continuing threat of Covid and natural disasters affecting our country, Mr Young highlighted how important mental health support was for the Longman community.

“These changes are particularly worrying for my local community and I urge the Labor government to re-think this decision,” Mr Young said. “Access to mental health support is critical right now, particularly for young people in my electorate and this decision in the midst of the holiday season in my opinion is not a good one.

“I appreciate that this government have their own view on where the taxpayer’s money should be spent and I respect that, but I question their priorities when they cut funding to critical services at a time like this.”

An independent evaluation of the Better Access initiative has even recommended that ‘the additional 10 sessions should continue to be made available and should be targeted towards those with complex mental health needs’.

team behind the

Museum and Abbey Medieval Festival would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year. Looking ahead they have exciting plans for 2023, welcoming a new director and plans to start building work on their art gallery and café.

She will continue to support the organisation as a board member, a volunteer at the museum and as Lady Edith Abbeystowe at the Abbey Medieval Festival.

"I wish to sincerely thank you for all your support during my time as the museum and festival director,” Edith said. “It has been such a privilege to work for this

amazing organisation and I look forward to watching it flourish into the future. Thank you once again.”

Stepping into the role as director is Chloe Tanner, whose expertise and business acumen will see forward the growth and development of the museum and new art gallery.

“It is a privilege to be appointed as the next director of the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, an artistic and cultural place of significance in Australia,” she said. “Thank you to Edith for her leadership and years of service and to everyone for welcoming me so warmly. And, if they were, they would not be reading this…they would be too busy sorting out the mess that has become our Nation, Cranky Lizard expects that they would be climbing out of their personal comfort cocoons rather than concerning themselves with what is commented upon in this august publication.

Democracies seem to be in trouble. Regardless of where you look, sovereign nations that hold free votes for their citizens to elect men and women who will form the Nation’s Parliament and thus lead the Nation, are not able to obtain working majorities or do so based upon popular conceptions of pandering to identities.

Why the instability ? What is the source of the anger or frustration, because that is what it is. Why is the ballot box being bashed with baseball bats by frustrated and angry citizens, and mainly younger ones at that !!

Democracies, based upon the Westminster model or the Presidential model, rely solely upon informed citizens making informed choices on Election Day to choose a Parliament which will govern the Nation. Spiteful, uninformed voting patterns are becoming the norm ; citizens are using the ballot box as a form of punishment and, disturbingly, identities are being used as object of praise or objects of scorn.

The alternatives are dictatorships. Be they Socialist, Nationalistic or Dynastic [ as in North Korea. ] or lastly Communist, although there are really no Communist Dictatorships left, except perhaps for the People’s Republic of China which is stretching it a bit.

Do Australians want to live in a dictatorship ? Most say No; some , quite frankly would not know, but it is safe to say that the majority of Australians still value our freedom, thus our democracy, as people do in the UK and the USA which are the major democracies which affect our lives, one way or the other.

But we are struggling in our democracies – we are not able to secure stable Government, either from the right or from the left.

Why ?

We have not seen cycles such as this in our lifetime……….Parliaments have been hung or tight but still workable. Today Parliaments, particularly bi-cameral Parliaments are not…..and any astute observer can see that they don’t work because of spiteful, even malicious obstructionism, incompetence, ill-conceived populism or, dare I say it, just bloody, flat out ignorance !!

And you, as a sensible reader can draw your own conclusions as to who is what,

in the above toxic cocktail.

Cranky Lizard accepts and easily understands that identifying a widespread social problem is simple : you look at the place and you know it is not working. That is not hard to figure out.

What is hard, is to suggest some sensible, some realistic, some achievable course of action to deal with this.

Because, it is a very complex matter indeed.

In seeking some sensible answers it is worth looking at what democracies are working and seek to establish why ?

Sovereign nations with Parliamentary democracies, governing under the rule of law, that seem to be working are Singapore, Israel, Poland, Hungary, Japan, maybe Tanzania, India and there are probably others you can think of………… Common to these nations and axiomatic to their apparent success, is strong, political leadership.

As much as we want to, in Australia ,we do not have strong political leader-ship ; we just don’t.

Cranky Lizard will not be taking positions on strong political leadership because the answer is as plain as a dunny in the desert. But we can assume that central to our difficulties as a nation, is the lack of strong political leadership and, essentially, a dysfunctional bi-cameral Federal Parliament.

This institutional dysfunction opens a slight crack in the walls of our community strength and allows the creeping shadows of self-doubt to wind their sinuous way into other community institutions.

Behaviour and beliefs that have been accepted as norms for centuries in our communal life, are eroding or being challenged ; marriage, education, family values, gender, sexuality, patriotism, respect for authority and our institutions, are all challenged and in some cases ridiculed.

Why ?

Cranky Lizard believes that the continual media and academic attack upon Christianity as a binding institution in our community has had a significant effect upon this communal, moral decline. Cranky Lizard is a Christian, but does not speak in tongues or allows handfuls of taipans to munch happily away on hands and arms knowing that the Lord will protect.

Cranky Lizard is sure that the diminution of Christianity in our communities has had an insidious effect ; Christianity a binding fabric in our community tapestry , as are other major religions such as Hinduism, Judaism and Islam in their own manner and in their own communities. The weakening of Christianity has loosened the fabric which binds us and facilitates the moral decline in our general values.

It seems clear that the rudders on the various ships in our community fleet are suffering from either bent or broken pinions…leaving a confused wriggling wake behind us rather than a single unwavering line of common purpose.

We have a generation of young people, and Cranky Lizard abhors labels, but for the sake of literary clarity, we can say “ twenty something’s “ who by their actions, their comments and, in some cases, their disruptive behaviour, of which, they seem quite proud ; seek to lay blame for what they conceive as their comparative wealth disadvantage, on a generation of Australians they often refer to as “ old, rich, white men “ !

Cranky Lizard is neither old nor rich, but

certainly white, from Celtic origins, proud of that, and will concede nothing to envy, greed or conflated juvenile egos leading to outbreaks of mass stupidity, witness the ‘ Antifa ‘ phenomena and other such flash mob circuses.

Cranky Lizard makes the following comment regarding the inbuilt jealousies that seem to spring from this agitated generation of Australians.

When they were in their early twenties, the generation now rubbished by younger Australians, faced significant threats to our national survival, they fought, they died and they defeated the Nazis and the Japanese Tojo Axis, an evil like the world has never seen. When they were in their middle age they faced down global communism and the real threat of nuclear destruction; for the most part those two significant threats are defeated….yet still, there are many young people in western democracies who complain that old white folks have stolen their future.

Message for young people from Cranky Lizard : They did not steal your future people; they gave you one. Grab hold of the life you have, use it to the best of your capacity ; this is not a dress rehearsal… this is the only life you will have, bloody well use it !!!

There are moments, of course, when Cranky Lizard becomes slightly emotional !!

It is clear that we, as a community need to embark upon a journey of re-discovering respect for each other ; we can’t expect politicians to do it for us. Politicians are us, we choose them, and there is no point in blaming them for all the wrongs you see.

Cranky Lizard observes that some things in our communities are self-ev ident :

• The peaceful practice of any religion is not and never has been wrong.

• Robust, respectful conversations and debate about ideas, are the core to the strength and resil ience of our communities.

• The idea of the common good is essential and fundamental to the benefit of our community and must prevail over the pursuit of selfish, personal gain.

• And, all things being equal, the sun will come up tomorrow.

There are few better places in the world to live in, than Australia : it is wise not to take it for granted.

First storms of 2023 hit the region

After a hot and humid day, residents across the Moreton Bay region certainly felt the impact of severe storms as they rolled in late on Wednesday January 4. At the peak of the event (about 10pm), there were 14,000 customers in the region without power.

The severe storm activity impacted the region broadly, with significant rainfall and wind affecting areas including Deception Bay, North Lakes, Kallangur, Rothwell and nearby surrounding suburbs. The heaviest rainfall occurred in a 30-minute period in the Rothwell/Deception Bay area with more than 100mm falling in one hour.

Despite the crazy and fast moving storm activity, there were no road closures with council crews working through the night to remove any necessary obstructions and debris and the State Emergency Service received 59 requests for assistance.

Fortunately, most residents were well prepared for the wild weather and had already cleared their gutters of leaf litter and yards of potential projectiles. However, council is still reminding people to prepare their homes and families with a disaster plan.

Visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au for a handy guide on how to prepare your home for storm events and remember to subscribe to MoretonAlert to receive storm warnings from BOM.

Giant “turtle” was a sight to sea

For those lucky enough to venture down to Woorim Beach on Sunday December 4, you may have come across the sight of an unusual looking turtle. What made this turtle a little different, is it was entirely made up of members of the community. Organised by the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA), the event was held in a bid to raise more awareness about turtle nesting season and how we as a community can help protect the mothers and their hatchlings.

More than 200 people came together on Woorim Beach in a joyful celebration of these maternal mariners, who return to the dunes of their birth to lay their clutches of 100 or so ping-pong ball sized eggs.

Wrangling the crowd was local artist Geoff Ginn who, with the help of BIEPA marshals, corralled the two hundred into a giant human-made turtle on the sands of low tide. Captured from above by hovering drones, after mingling for a while and laughing a lot, the human turtle then attempted a return to sea, with much frivolity and a modicum of success!

“I was pleased to make a simple but very useful giant turtle outline that brought together a joyous and thoughtful crowd to highlight this risky 100-metre journey turtles, both large and small, take across our beaches many times each year,” Geoff said.

“The whole community is recognising the unique value of this amazing place,” BIEPA president Richard Ogden said. “We must work together to look after our remaining wildlife and natural habitat.”

It is estimated that one in 10,000 South East Queensland loggerhead turtles survives to return to breed in the area it was born. If undisturbed, a mother turtle will slowly traverse the beach to the dunes where she will spend time ‘body pitting’ and clearing away debris. Then she will dig her nest chamber and lay an average of 127 eggs the size of ping-pong balls. She will fastidiously close and camouflage the nest then traverse

the beach to her ocean home. Her time ashore will be about two hours. The nest will incubate and hatch in about eight weeks.

How you can help

The Bribie Island Turtle Trackers (BITT) have provided some recommendations to those who use the beach:

• If you encounter a nesting turtle or hatchlings, first immediately phone the Bribie Island Turtle Trackers on 0438 111 163, who will respond as soon as possible. They will monitor and collect data for scientists. If the turtle leaves before a BITT arrives, take the GPS coordinates and mark the nest area with sticks if possible. Try not to walk on turtle tracks and the nesting site, these provide important information for BITT.

• Give any nesting turtle a wide berth, staying behind her and out of her line of sight as nesting turtles are easily spooked. The BITT’s monitor the mother and her nest to ensure they remain safe and protected, relocating the eggs if threatened.

• Avoid using artificial lights on the beach as they can disorient turtles affecting their ability to see the brighter horizon over the ocean which they use to find their way back out to sea after laying. Artificial lights also impact turtles looking to come into the beach and hatchlings making their way out to sea.

• Remember to keep off the fragile dunes.

• If choosing to drive on the beach, please avoid turtle nesting beaches at night as their nesting and hatching habits are mostly nocturnal. Also avoid driving at high tide on soft sand as there could be nests and it creates deep ruts that turtle hatchlings cannot negotiate to get to the ocean, making them vulnerable to predators and exhaustion.

Bribie Island and Surrounds

Happy New Year to all of our community, we hope everyone had an amazing Christmas and New Year celebrations. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the members of Bribie Island Freemasons and in particular Ron Leth who reached out to us in mid-2022 offering Bribie Respite and Support Services a sizeable donation.

As a “Not for Profit” organisation, this was a fantastic opportunity for BRASS to purchase some much needed equipment to continue with the support we provide in our local community and surrounds. In addition to an already purchased defibrillator through other generous donations from within the community, Bribie Island Freemasons donation meant that we could now purchase additional defibrillators to support the services in other areas of our organisation. Bribie Respite and Support Services provided additional wish list items to Ron for consideration by the members of Bribie Island Freemasons and to our surprise these items were graciously given the green light for purchasing. These items included pool tables, outdoor setting, dining room set, bed side tables and dishwashers. All items were sourced locally within the Moreton Bay Region and are now complimenting our Aged Care and NDIS support services including our Respite House at Banksia Beach.

Bribie Respite and Support Services sincerely thank Bribie Island Freemasons for helping us continue making a difference in the lives of our locals when they access our support services.

Caboolture Community Action receive seniors expo profits

Caboolture Community Action (CCA) are able to continue doing their amazing work thanks to generous donations like the profits from Member for Longman Terry Young’s recent seniors expo. Held in October 2022, the seniors expo had more than 140 exhibitors (combined) to make it the largest seniors expo that Mr Young has hosted in the Longman electorate. The expo is going from ‘strength to strength’ each year with an even larger expo planned for October 2023. Expos like this one provide so much information to the elderly in the form of displays, guest speakers, show bags and referrals. The profit from each seniors expo is donated to a worthwhile cause with the 2022 expo donation of $1068 presented to CCA.

Caboolture Community Action does so much for our local community. Not only do they provide food and support daily to people in need but over the last few years, they have provided Christmas hampers

to those less fortunate. Prior to Covid, the group created 125 Christmas hampers, the first year of Covid they created 275 hampers and at present they have capped themselves at 400 hampers - that is a lot of work and generosity all provided by CCA.

CCA offers practical outreach, support and encouragement to people in the local Caboolture/Morayfield area who are experiencing extreme hardship, homelessness or at risk of homelessness. They provide services such as food relief, housing assistance and referrals and more. CCA is a non-government funded, not-for-profit organisation managed entirely by volunteer staff.

Mr Young believes that the seniors expo provides assistance and support to our elderly, which in turn can assist groups such as CCA to help some of our most vulnerable members of the community.

ABOUT US

Kim first worked in the Real Estate Industry in Brisbane in 1988 and Ron, her husband, started his real estate career in 1984. During that decade they stretched their resourc-

es to buy their own investment houses in Brisbane’s inner north.

In the 1960’s Bribie Bridge was built, Ron’s families modest holiday home overlooked the passage sunsets and Sandstone Pt and Banksia were bushland, ideal for collecting the Christmas tree with the Kingswood, beaches, boating, fishing, Bluey’s etc. What an amazing part of the world!

Due to this local knowledge in the 1990’s K & R moved up from Brisbane, residential development of Sandstone Pt was underway and they saw it as a perfect area to invest. By 2012, history shows there was a definite undertow of frustrated investment property owners locally, however people saw K & R’s success and encouraged them to share their decades learnt skills. Following much consideration My Personal Property Manager and the concept of specialised personal service in Residential Property Management was born @ Bribie Island, Sandstone Pt & Surrounds.

MyPPM has grown totally through personal references

and reputation.

To continue this high standard of service with growth, in early 2017, Jodie Brunt joined the team as our Senior property manager. She has lived locally for 31 years and started her career in property management on Bribie Island in 2004, (a true local) she shares the MYPPM passion.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the now thousands of Investment owners, tenants and trusted tradies for joining our quest over the years.

Hope you all enjoyed Christmas with your families and we wish you all a Happy and Prosperous 2023.

State’s tightest rental market cuts construction fees

The Queensland region with the tightest residential vacancy rate in the state is primed for a turnaround, after its council cut fees to incentivise multi-dwelling construction.

Goondiwindi Regional Council (GRC) is introducing a year-long rebate for all council fees and charges associated with constructing new multi-dwelling buildings such as units, townhouses, duplexes and granny flats.

Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) COO Dean Milton said the move, welcomed by the real estate peak body today, was an exemplary way council’s could help incentivise much-needed new housing supply.

“With the Goondiwindi region hovering barely above the ‘no vacancy’ line at just 0.1 per cent for the past two quarters, it’s welcome news to see council acting to remove financial barriers to new housing supply,” Mr Milton said.

“The REIQ has been advocating for innovative ways to incentivise investors to bring more housing supply to market, both in the short and long term.

“In this vein, we recently welcomed the state government opening up renting

granny flats to a separate household and similarly, its pleasing to see GRC trying a carrot (rather than a stick) approach to maximise new housing opportunity in a targeted way.”

Meanwhile, Logan City Council will introduce new secondary dwelling infrastructure charges from February 2023, to match the charges for auxiliary units in Logan.

“Logan’s vacancy rate is 0.7 per cent which is still a far cry from what we consider ‘healthy’ at 2.6 – 3.5 per cent,” Mr Milton said.

“Our view is that introducing new fees acts as a deterrent for property owners to bring secondary dwellings to the rental market, and is contrary to the intension of the amended regulations for granny flats.

“Private investors are playing a really vital role, housing a significant proportion of the community, and there’s opportunity for government to do more to encourage and incentivise that.”

Beachmere: a town rich in stories and memories

Rugby referee blows the whistle on daylight saving

Long-time local Bribie resident and founder and proponent of ‘The Real-Time Initiative’, Graeme Brittenden, is calling for standardising time zones across the eastern seaboard all year round. Removing the standard time zone confusion between Queensland, New South Wales, ACT, Victoria and Tasmania each summer, will generate significant business cost-savings, boost government revenues and simplify life as well as putting an end to those perpetual arguments about daylight saving.

Effectively standardising the eastern seaboard time zones will mean 88% of the population (22 million people) will be in the same time zone all year, leaving only South Australia and Western Australia with different time zones. In addition, standardising time zones would mean daylight saving would be abandoned.

Instead, the time zones of the eastern states mentioned above would have their standard time moved forward 30 minutes never to change again.

Graeme sparked my interest, so I eagerly sat down to hear more about his proposals. Graeme is a former rugby referee and both of us are originally from Wellington, New Zealand - we had a lot in common.

Who would have thought what was originally an idea for a walking brochure would culminate in two books diving into the stories and history of Beachmere and its residents? Following on from the success and popularity of Beachmere –Then and Now (released in May 2020 to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary), Karen Wallwork has produced another book filled with more stories and memories of the town she proudly calls home. Beachmere Revisited went on sale in early December and was officially launched on December 22 at the Beach Shak Café with Member for Longman Terry Young and Moreton Bay Regional Council Division 2 councillor Mark Booth in attendance.

When Karen first started searching for information on Beachmere to fulfil her walking brochure idea, she didn’t have much success. It was when she spoke to other locals that the stories and history of the town started to flow and the end result was Beachmere – Then and Now

enough time to gather all the necessary information before the publishing deadline for Beachmere’s 150th anniversary. I have since delved into those early stories from Beachmere’s history that had sparked my interest and that’s how Beachmere Revisited was born!”

To date, more than 600 copies of Beachmere – Then and Now have been sold with about 200 copies of Beachmere Revisited already making their way out into the community since it arrived on December 1, 2022. Karen said there had also been interested sparked interstate and internationally.

“I’m very proud of this little community who have really put their support behind this project,” Karen said. “Correspondence from the State Library of Queensland sums it up best - ‘your publication/s will survive for the use of future generations contributing to the ongoing preservation and enrichment of Queensland heritage’. That is an awesome achievement for a

The latest publication also involved original artworks by talented members of the community. Karen said there was hope these would form the basis for an event to be potentially held mid-year in 2023. “It’s only early stages yet.” she said. “However it’s all very exciting and along with other history events in the pipeline –watch this space.”

So after two successful ventures so far, it begs the question, will there be a third Beachmere themed book? “Stories keep coming even when I think there is no more to tell,” Karen said. “In the back of Beachmere Revisited, there are some lined pages left blank just begging to have a story written. If I get enough of these submitted along with some photos, there could be one more.”

If you would like to secure a copy of one of these books, they can be purchased locally from Beach Shak Café and IGA Beachmere.

“Wow! Think about it,” Graeme said. “No more time zone confusion at the border, at the airport and when travelling.

Arranging cross-border business meetings without time zones to worry about, will be a breeze. No more having to switch TV channels to continue watching cricket or rugby or businesses having difficulties arranging urgent spare parts from other eastern states with time delays because of time zones. Even more sunshine time in Queensland!”

There has been growing interest in Graeme’s proposal from various business groups and the government, including former treasurer Josh Frydenberg. Back in 2010, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) conducted a survey of 2250 businesses across south-eastern Queensland. Results indicated they suffered a loss of sales, productivity, increased staffing, and extra travel and accommodation costs of $4.35 billion as adirect result of the different time zones.

The CCIQ survey was completed 12 years ago before the advent of Zoom and at a time when smartphones and 4G were just being rolled out. We were yet to see the impacts of the pandemic, with the rapid change in work-from-home and other new collaborative online business practices. Before the unpredictable era of staff shortages across almost every sector and significant problems with staff burnout and stress. In addition, employee demands for a better lifestyle, reduced working hours and more flexibility mean that mental health and employee welfare are unnegotiable issues in many workplaces.

The issue is complex and while we all would like to see a standardisation of time zones, it is hard to see New South Wales and Victoria giving up half an hour of ‘summertime’ along with the lifestyle and mental health benefits of extended daylight. However, adding an extra half an hour of light during winter may be an attractive offset to some.

But the stories continued to flow and it meant another book was needed.

“During Beachmere – Then and Now, several names and stories cropped up during the research that I didn’t get to pursue,” Karen said. “There just wasn’t

There are winners and losers with the proposed transition to a single time zone across the eastern states. The proposal requires proper investigation and debate by the federal and state governments.

Congratulations must go to Graeme Brittenden for his initiative and proposed solution to a complex problem.

GARDEN WITH

Hi Gardeners,

As we admire the dazzling colours in a summer garden accompanied with the beautiful scent of the Frangipani, the Bougainvillea and Hibiscus whilst sitting under the shade of your Poinciana or Jacaranda tree, let’s welcome in 2023.

To have a happy home...

I did a Google search and found that the average Queenslander spends more than $400 on gifts for Christmas and more than $500 per year on plants. Flowers make you happy and put a smile on your face, so let’s get gardening.

The best value for money is to buy annual flowers. Although people think they are short term and a lot of work, this is not true. They are outstanding! You can make a theme with these beautiful annuals or bedding plants, create drifts of colour or mass plant one colour. If you don’t have the room, you can use large pots and highlight areas such as decks or on patios.

By dead heading the flowers on your plants you will motivate the flowers to produce more abundant flowers.

Flowering plant suggestions for this time of the year are:

Hanging Baskets

Do you want to dress up your patio, deck or pergola? Well, how about some hanging baskets? The bigger the basket the more beautiful and fuller they look, plus they won’t dry out as much.

If using plastic hanging baskets, just add a good potting mix and plant out. Wire hanging baskets, with chain hangers and liner, allow for the holes in the side of the baskets to be used for layer planting. The liners are a big attraction for the local bird life, assisting them to build their nests.

Let them have the liner, you can always replace it, but you can’t replace the new life who find you and your garden very attractive.

When planting out the hanging baskets, balance them in a pot or bucket for easier handling. Always use a good potting mix such as Searles Platinum Potting Mix which has good water holding capacity, or a potting mix which contains a wetting agent, to ensure the mix is wet. Most decent potting mixes contain sufficient

slow-release fertilizer for 6–8 months. Liquid feed once a month. As they dry out quickly, a daily watering during summer is required, with 2-3 times a week in the spring and autumn months preferred.

The baskets are best hung in a semi-shade position out of the hot afternoon sun and ideally in a wind free position.

When choosing feature plants for your hanging baskets, pick a plant that is upright and those with

Excellent catches around Bribie

Happy New Year readers of ‘the LOCAL’ newspaper

With the school holidays in full swing there’s been a lot of traffic on the water. Despite this, there have been some decent reports of excellent catches around Bribie. The Pacific Harbour canals have been the place to escape from the wind, with plenty of nice Bream caught from around the pontoons at night on prawns and chicken breast. Soft plastics have produced good Mangrove Jacks in the same areas.

The mouth of the canals, on the incoming tides using live herring or mullet, is best for catching flathead. The ledge at White Patch is fishing well for snapper and mulloway, especially in the last hour or so of the runout tide floating unweighted pilchards.

Preferring the incoming tide on the flats at White Patch there are plenty of whiting, flathead and bream, using live bloodworms are the bait of choice.

Blue swimmer crabs are in abundance in the passage at the moment. Unfortunately, there have been reports of theft, so keep an eye on your pots.

Bread and butter basics

The simple things in life are often the best. Therefore, back-to-basic fishing for whiting, bream and flathead around Bribie, can be extremely rewarding. It is simple, cheap and most of the time you will get a feed of fresh fish. Fishing as light as possible is the best way to catch these species.

The key is to make your bait look as natural as possible. Fish are not going to be interested in bait attached to a rope with a gigantic sinker.

My preferred baits include live yabbies, bloodworms and fresh prawns using tackle including a No. 4 longshank hook, swivel and sinker, depending on the current, with 6lb-10lb line and a light Spin Rod.

When in search of an area to fish, find the yabby holes. Fish won’t be far behind. Personally, I like an incoming tide over the flats. You will be surprised just how little water you need to catch fish.

The process when fishing for these species is just as rewarding as the catch. I love the process just as much as the prize. Working out the wind and tide, collecting bait and figuring out a location is all part of the fishing process and the anticipated prize.

One of the commonly most asked questions we are asked at the VMR Bribie Radio Room is: Do I buy a handheld VHF or have one installed in my vessel? The answer is: most definitely have a VHF Radio professionally installed in your vessel with a decent size VHF aerial. The handheld VHF Radio has very limited range.

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.

If you and your friends wish to sign this petition, cut it out, complete and post to The LOCAL News, Island and surrounds, PO Box 1019, Bongaree QLD 4507. Alternatively the completed form can be scanned and emailed as a pdf or image file to belinda@islandandsurrounds.com.au

• The battery may be flat when it’s needed

• Available in phone service areas only

• Emergency calls may not always be available

• Calls are forwarded to rescuers

They require no qualification to operate them. But at times, they can be challeng ing for those who are not tech savvy .

27MHz radio is old technology. It has very limited range and most VMR and Coast Guards are phasing out monitoring 27MHz channels. We at VMR Bribie still currently monitor 27MHz channels 88 and 90.They require no qualification to operate them.

The best option is to have a VHF radio installed in your vessel because it:

• Calls ALL SHIPS

• Emergency calls are monitored 24/7

• More battery power

• Uses line of sight/repeater stations

• One button emergency calls

• Talks directly to rescuers

VMR Bribie currently monitors VHF

radio off. Make sure that your VHF radio

for a new Bribie Bridge

Thank you again for those people who took the time to email and mail the signatures into me. It was great to see all lines of the signatures were completed on so many. It is clear the community does want to see a new bridge built. We are growing as a community with an increase of population in this region and now a popular destination for tourists.

Once again because of you we will keep on the new Bribie Bridge campaign. We currently have 1735 signatures. Issue 84 brought us 18 more signatures. Keep those signatures coming! Warm regards Belinda Ferguson
