Merry Christmas!
This issue is our final issue for 2022 and the team at the LOCAL would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas. We hope you enjoy celebrating and creating memories with family and friends.
This Issue has plenty of local information for our visitors and community regarding what’s happening in our region during the Christmas holidays. We look at Law and Order settling down a little in the region and ways you can be proactive in your own safety and that of those around you. You can have your say on the Living Coast Plan and subsequent coastal change.
The White Patch water main has now been permanently restored eight months after flooding washed away the causeway.
We meet Lieutenant General Mark Evans AO, DSC who gave an incredible speech at Bribie Island’s U3A last month.
We have the usual gardening, fishing and boating tips. It’s a great time of year to get out and enjoy our waterways. We are extremely lucky to live in this little piece of paradise.
As usual we cover a wide variety of local issues, while showcasing our local businesses. It is our local businesses who make this publication possible so please support them. There are plenty of local retailers to do your Christmas shopping with.
Until next year.
Warm regards, Belinda
What’s happened to society I’m thinking about the ‘good old days’ which meant many things to different people. Back in the sixties my boss used to say there’s no such thing as the ‘good old days’ referring to just how hard life would have been prior to the introduction of labour-saving devices (washing machines etc), when we had cars rather than the horse and sulky, with most homes having a TV by then. I could understand his point of view. Back then most families had one income, we were taught to respect others, we got by on whatever we had and family life seemed to be uncomplicated. Help when needed was as far away as your neighbour. Well, that was then. The here and now world is obviously quite different. While there’s no denying we have benefited from some fantastic advancements since those days, it appears to have brought with it a substantial decline in societal values. Now days the media is flooded with reports of all sorts of crimes, rorting of the public purse and road rage to name a few. There are government handouts for just about everything, the opportunistic converge on some charitable institutions for handouts to the point where an estimated 30% only of overall expenditures is actually directed to support the real needy. We see a lack of respect and discipline in everyday life, there’s a plethora of modern issues, some of which cast aside previously adopted values and one has to wonder just where society is heading.
Times are changing – yes! However not all changes are positive nor necessarily accepted. That, of course, comes down to one’s choice. On reflection, I can see that the ‘good old days’ weren’t so bad at all and whilst
we may now have an improved higher standard of living it comes at what cost?

Thank you for the great work you are doing in the newspaper. I recently moved to Bribie from Redcliffe and thoroughly enjoyed reading Issue 83. I want to thank all long-time residents of Bribie who created this wonderful community.
Redcliffe used to be a community with the Redcliffe Herald being our voice. With the Moreton Council taking over the Redcliffe Council about 10-12years ago and with the construction of the new bridge to Redcliffe things began to change. The Redcliffe Herald first became politically correct and after a while just pure propaganda, unreadable. No wonder it is now gone. It is amazing to hear people’s voices expressed through the community newspaper here on Bribie.
With great interest I read the letter from Ray suggesting the construction of a bridge from Toorbul to White Patch. I am sure developers will be delighted with the idea. However, the highway/bridge to such a lovely place as White Patch and to a border a National Park seems to be a little extreme to me. Why ruin things if you are not a developer? We just watched Redcliffe being ruined, why repeat the experience.
The current bridge seems completely fine to me, with congestion mostly on highways anyway. And it is so lovely to keep the developers in check with the restricted traffic. With many people now working from home, as I do, we keep our cars off the road, saving the environment.
I do hope that Bribie will stay as it is now. A paradise.

A Local’s Guide to Christmas
Amelia Strazdins
Christmas, like most years, is fast approaching. The lists are growing with a thousand things to do all whilst trying to get into the festive spirit.
There are so many things to remember around this time of year. One of the most important things to consider is supporting the community and shopping locally. Around Christmas time the Island becomes a hub of activity with markets to Christmas light displays, there are a range of festive activities appropriate for all ages. On December 10 was the annual Boat Parade held in the Banksia Beach canals. From those decorating their boats to those watching, it is certainly a muchloved event and one to add to next year’s calendar if you didn’t quite make it this year.
Speaking of lights, making the rounds to see the light displays is always a highlight of the season. Locals across the Island and those who live across the bridge, put in tremendous effort to ensure their houses can be seen from the North Pole. All that effort (and power) certainly plays a huge part in adding to the Christmas spirit.
Whilst we would all love enough free time to just drive around looking at lights there is no doubting the stress that the month of December brings with grocery shopping to gift giving, the list is never ending. Perhaps this year when buying for your loved ones or shopping for Christmas lunch consider how you can support local businesses and organisations. Whether
it be stopping by one of the boutiques on the Island or purchasing from the market it all assists in helping our smaller business.
Markets such as the Caboolture Twilight Market, held on the 17th or more locally organised markets are not only good for supporting locals but are also a great time for the entire family. For those willing to venture a little further, Brisbane goes all out for Christmas. From spectacular light displays to ice skating and everything in-between, it provides some great holiday fun.
Whilst this holiday season does bring with it lots of joy and happiness it can also be a difficult time for those who are struggling. And thus, it is important to remember that Christmas is about giving - to others. One of the most thoughtful gifts you can give is a donation. Whether that be donating your time to a local charity, donating money on behalf of another or donating food, clothing and gifts to charities who need our support. Many organisations and non-profits work extra hard this time of year to ensure that everyone can experience a little bit of that Christmas magic and your support does not go unnoticed.
With that we wish everyone a Merry Christmas (for those who celebrate) and happy holidays to all.

Damian Brown
I don’t usually write articles, that’s what I have a team of professionals for. However, I felt it necessary to pen a special tribute to remember yet another wonderful staff writer for the LOCAL who passed away after a two-year battle with cancer at only 58 years young.
I first met Damian in 2009, when he became the General Manager of Pa cific Harbour Golf and Country Club (PHGCC). Some of you may remember him from his time there.
I started this local newspaper six years ago and Damian asked if he could write some articles for me. Naturally I said yes. I’m not a journo so any help with articles is always
FAREWELL
By Belinda Ferguson
welcome. Damian proceeded to write for me for approximately three years, producing some exceptional stories for the paper. He covered a wide variety of topics from residents celebrating a milestone anniversary to that local strawberry farmer and the needles incident, as well as any new developments in our local region. He even interviewed Greg Hunt, the federal health minister at the time.
Damian founded the ‘Close Encounters’ stories which featured in the paper some four years ago. His stories were always accompanied with a photo of the story subject and himself along with his famous peace sign. Close Encounters were usually the feature stories and were written about local heroes in our region.
Damian was a very clever writer, always ensuring readers were given a great insight to his subjects and their achievements in our region. His work was very easy to read and he certainly had a following, just like Cranky Lizard.
Damian was also a people person and was brilliant at marketing, teaching me some invaluable marketing skills which I still use in this newspaper today.
It was Damian who suggested I call the newspaper the LOCAL, believing that the name would catch on quickly and it certainly did.
Just like Harvey Fewings, Damian was very important to this newspaper and a very close friend to me. I will miss him immensely both as a close friend and as someone I could also talk to about the daily operations
of owning and operating a local newspaper.
Family and friends came together to celebrate his life gathering at Kings Beach Caloundra for his final send off.
The staff from the LOCAL newspaper send their deepest condolences to Damian’s family. We can all take comfort knowing he passed away peacefully with his family beside him. He left behind his mum Carmel, dad Terence, brother Terry and sisters Janine and Katrina and his two children Maeve and Henry.
Damian loved the water and is now in his happy place swimming with the dolphins just off Kings Beach at Caloundra. We will miss you mate. I count myself lucky to have both worked with you and known you as a friend.

The benefits from a bit of horse therapy
By Sheree Hoddinett
It’s smiles all round when Merrill Winnell and her trusty four-legged sidekick Faith drop by Bolton Clarke’s Fernhill residential aged care community in Caboolture. The regular visits to the community have become quite a favourite amongst residents who enjoy their chance to ‘horse around’ with Faith, who in turn is rewarded with plenty of pats, cuddles, kisses and of course the all-important carrots. What originated as an idea to lift the spirits of residents who were struggling with the impact of Covid is growing with potential and Merrill hopes to visit other care facilities within the region and beyond.
On your average normal day, Faith grazes the Elimbah paddock she calls home. A gentle giant without a worry in the world (except maybe her paddock companion Mac, especially when it comes to food) Faith is a joy to owner Merrill, who couldn’t imagine her life without horses in it.
“I never actually owned my own horse until I was 34,” Merrill said with a laugh. “When I was growing up we had four acres but my parents weren’t horsey at all. I learnt to ride on a Shetland Pony out in the bush, no bridle or saddle, just bareback and held on to the hair. I fell off and got hurt a lot but it was worth it! I never rode in a saddle until I was about 21.”
Faith came into Merrill’s life a few years ago after she got her from a friend who needed to give her a new home. Merrill happily took her in and has spent time giving her love and affection and the opportunity to get used to being around humans. It was Merrill’s neighbour Kaylene, who is actually a nurse at Fernhill, who first prompted the idea to bring Faith for a visit.
“I had given it a bit of thought a few times
but never pursued it,” Merrill said. “Then Faith was starting to mellow a bit more and I asked Kaylene what she thought about the idea and before I knew it, I was on my way to meet Nick and discuss our next move.”
Bolton Clarke Fernhill Lifestyle Coordinator Nick Neumann said the visits from Merrill and Faith brought many memories, smiles and joy to those who called the community home.
“We have lots of residents here who have very fond memories of their own horses or other animals and seeing the smiles that light up their faces is just incredible. It improves both their physical and mental health,” he said. “The therapy horses often offer familiar reminders to residents of their past experiences with horses including time spent training them in the paddock or on the farm, particularly in an area like Caboolture which has such a rural heritage. She is definitely a one in a million horse, not a lot fazes her. She isn't worried about the wheelchairs, walking frames and even sometimes a resident who is bed bound. She just takes it all in her stride.”
Merrill already has so many photos capturing the joy of the residents as they get to enjoy their experience with Faith.
“The looks on their faces, if they could get lipstick on their ears, they would have,” Merrill said of the reactions to Faith.
“The smiles were amazing. Some of them couldn’t believe they were looking at a real live horse. There are some who had never seen a real live horse or even touched one.
It is so heartfelt and fascinating listening to their stories from when they were younger, how they used to use their horses to plough paddocks. The ones that grew up around horses and are horsey people

Merrill and Faith enjoy their visits with aged care residents and would love to spread the cheer to other local aged care communities
will stand there and smell her saying they love the smell and won’t wash their hands. I’ve been there four or five times now. There’s one lady that comes down as soon as I turn up and stays until I leave. She hugs Faith and sings to her, kisses her and pats her, just to see the joy and happiness on all their faces, it’s so worth it.”
From residents who are non-verbal to those who used to only watch from their room balcony, Merrill has seen the changes and loves the idea that she can help make a difference in their lives.
“It just fills me to overflowing with happiness to see them happy. It’s only for a couple of minutes each time, but it makes a difference,” she says. “There’s a few of them that like to have a chat and I love talking to them. So many of them don’t have much happening for them, they spend a lot of time inside and don’t get many visitors. Just the looks on their faces as they make their way towards Faith, it’s priceless. I can’t put it into words and photos really don’t do it justice. Their faces just explode.”
Faith’s gentle nature means she isn’t bothered by the extra attention from residents, those who have walkers or even those who are wheeled down in their beds.
“She happily stands there and takes all the attention and the carrots too of course,” Merrill says. “She’s not an overly affectionate horse, so she won’t cuddle back or anything but she’s definitely not worried about the attention she’s getting.”
Moving forward Merrill hopes to continue these visits and is even looking into taking the visits further afield.
“Knowing how well this has been working at one spot, I’d really like to take it to other homes if I can,” she says.
If you would like to know more, please reach out to Merrill via email mandmwinnell@bigpond.com
How to be a storm season legend
Unitywater is teaming up with Sunshine Coast Lightning to ask customers and fans to be ‘Storm Season Legends’ by being ready when the rain hits.
Lightning players will feature in a series of videos to encourage the community to do a few simple checks around their home as everyone prepares for storm season and the next La Nina.
Unitywater Executive Manager Customer and Community Katherine Gee said warmer temperatures and humidity through to March made it more likely that rains would come in short-lived, high intensity events.
“Sudden bursts of very heavy rain are hard to manage for anyone and can have dramatic effects. But heavy rains can have some less obvious impacts too, especially on our water and sewerage systems,” she said. “Storm season preparations this year remind customers to check their overflow relief gullies (ORGs) and where their downpipes are connected.”
Ms Gee said it was likely a lot of people wouldn’t know what their ORG is or where it was located.
“It’s actually a very important piece of infrastructure that ensures any sewage overflows happen outside your home, not in it,” she said. “Our friends at Lightning are highlighting the importance of ORGs or as we like to call them – our ‘little heroes’ – and how it pays to know if yours is storm-ready.”
Ms Gee said the campaign also asked customers to update their contact details with Unitywater to stay informed over the storm season.
The campaign will run from December through to February. To watch the videos or for further information visit www. unitywater.com

The good news is since the recent crime spike on Bribie Island, things have settled down to a more normal pace of life and reports of serious crime events on the Island have virtually disappeared. Not to say things haven't been happening. Still the recent events have brought the community together, with residents more alert to their surroundings and a greater interest in crime prevention. An example of this is that about 120 locals attended the recent Bongaree Neighbourhood Watch meeting at the Bribie RSL. Meetings typically have about 25 attendees, demonstrating Bribie residents' intense interest and concern. Chaired by the Local Area Coordinator Greg Rollason, the meeting included representatives from the Queensland Police Senior Sergeant James Nelson, Acting Senior Sergeant John Dunbar and Moreton Community Engagement Senior Constable Jo-Anne Arthur with Member for Pumicestone Ali King and Councillor Brooke Savige from Moreton Bay Regional Council in attendance. The meeting was lively with many interactions from attendees who felt unsafe and expressed frustrations and concerns at the recent events. Concerns included police response times and delays in getting through to the police, whilst seeking guidance as to how they could work more closely to support the police. The Bongaree Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) group is the only NHW group on the Island as groups at Banksia Beach and Bellara recently closed due to a lack of community interest and support. The recent spike in property crime is not unique to Bribie with other areas from time -to - time facing similar challenges. It was clear the police also want the residents of Bribie to feel safe in their community and understand that some undesirable individuals create an atmosphere of fear. Despite this reality crime figures in our local area are very low compared to many other districts in Queensland. Taking some simple precautions can reduce crime opportunity. These include locking your vehicle when parked and when paying for your petrol and not leaving keys or valuables in your car. Consider changing out the screws used to hold on your number plate to tamper-proof, oneway security screws making it difficult to unscrew and remove where they can potentially be used in a crime. Don’t leave your home wide open, keep your garage shut reducing the opportunity for opportunists to help themselves to your tools, etc.
Police have asked residents to contact them first with any information pertaining to a crime or criminal activity. Post on Facebook or inform friends or neighbours later. If the matter is an emergency and an immediate police response is required ring 000. Otherwise ring Policelink 131 444. A job is created in the police system for non-urgent calls made via Policelink. This message is then sent to officers' iPads allowing patrol cars in the vicinity
to respond appropriately. Bribie Island Police Station is manned 24 hours with reception open Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. Calls outside these hours are redirected to Policelink and handled as above.
The Bribie Island Police Station has a complement of 22 officers comprising one-senior sergeant, three-sergeants and 18 senior constables/constables. Staff are rostered as needed with extra staff available on Friday and Saturday nights. District resources including Highway Patrol, the Tactical Crime Squad, Criminal Investigation Branch and Child Protection and Investigation Unit, also support them. Our local police station encompasses the Island, Sandstone Point, Ningi and extends as far as the Shell Service Station on the way to Caboolture. They do not service Beachmere.
As our local police station does not have a watchhouse, offenders needing to be remanded in custody are transported to Caboolture. The use of close circuit TV, including mobile camera units in conjunction with the Moreton Bay Regional Council, have been very successful in the early apprehension of offenders, including several recent serious incidents.
Sandstone Point Hotel hosts many special events particularly over weekends. The hotel arranges and finances special duties policing, which means no drain on the regular policing resources provided by the Bribie Island police station. The reality is the police work hard to respond to urgent requests however at times, like other first responders, they have to prioritise their responses.
Neighbourhood Watch provides an excellent way for residents to stay informed and provide a forum for Bribie residents to raise issues directly with the police and receive answers to concerns. At the recent meeting there was discussion around the timing of meetings, the format and how to engage more residents electronically. If you wish to keep informed about Neighbourhood Watch, email bongareenhw@outlook.com and ask to be put on the mailing list or join the Bongaree Neighbourhood Facebook page. The next meeting is Tuesday January 17 at the Bribie RSL.
School holidays are upon us, so expect to see groups of young people wandering around together just as you did in your youth. Remember when you used to get together with your friends and what you got up to? It doesn't necessarily mean they are up to mischief.
One good thing is that they are outside, off their screens, engaging and relating to their peers and exercising. It’s all part of growing up.
As a parent, please make sure you know where your kids are. Keep them busy and get them engaged in activities. Let us keep them safe and don't let them wander late at night. Let's foster great future citizens by caring for them.

Have your say on Living Coast Plan and coastal change
The gift of giving or the giving of a gift
In a bid to help our community guard against the effects of coastal change now and into the future, Moreton Bay Regional Council has developed a draft Living Coast Plan.
Mayor Peter Flannery said like other coastal areas, Moreton Bay would soon start to see the effects of sea level change and urged residents to start considering preventative measures for their own properties.
“Coastal living is part of our DNA in Moreton Bay - it’s even in the namewith roughly one third of our 500,000 population living in coastal suburbs,” he said. “We’ve all suffered the impacts of changing weather systems and intensifying floods and predictions highlight we will see sea levels change over the coming years and decades.
Council’s draft Living Coast Plan outlines the best course of action for residents in these areas to take now to prepare their properties, as well as identifying actions for council and the state government to improve coastal resilience and infrastructure. The Living Coast Plan outlines what residents can do now to make their homes more resilient and what they need to consider by certain dates, but we want to hear from you before it’s finalised.”
Mr Flannery said it was anticipated
that in years to come we would see king tide events start to impact properties near to the ocean, with potential for water to inundate some homes in decades to come if preventative action wasn’t taken.
“The impact will be significantly greater during one-off weather events like La Niña, intense storms and the floods we experienced in February/March this year,” Mr Flannery said. “That means we need to act now to make sure our shorelines and our homes are resilient enough to deal with those conditions and our Living Coast Plan will underpin that work. Council has undertaken extensive research and conducted community consultation across each part of our coastline to ensure we take appropriate action where possible. I urge all residents, but especially those in coastal areas, to go online and read the Living Coast Plan so that we can get your feedback as part of a strategy that will protect us for years to come.”
The Living Coast Plan is part of council’s Coastal Hazard Adaption Strategy, which received funding support from the state government QCoast2100 Program. Residents can submit their feedback until December 16, 2022. Visit www..yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ coastal-hazard-adaptation-strategy

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (you know you sang it in your head too!) where everyone is getting into the festive spirit of Christmas. Food is aplenty, drinks are flowing and most people are enjoying the company around them. It’s a great time to catch up with family and friends, especially if you haven’t seen them in a long time. But when you have kids, there’s one focus and it’s all in the presents.
I’m not telling you anything new here. Every parent out there knows the ‘fun’ of dealing with kids at Christmas time. Anytime there’s presents involved really. So, birthdays, Easter, Christmas of course and generally ‘just because’ these days. Just for the record, I don’t do that! I’m starting to sound a little like the Grinch or old Ebenezer Scrooge here. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my beautiful daughters at Christmas. It’s just the lead up and organising presents, it does my head in. These kids certainly want for nothing. They have more than enough toys to sink a battleship. Yes, I know I’m to blame on that one but far out, the selection of toys and technology just seems to outdo itself on a regular basis. Good old ads on television know how to do the trick as well, sucking the kids in with every promise of having the best stuff out there. So of course, my girls want, want, want. In turn I become the worst mum in the world because I say no. It’s pretty much the story of my life.
Despite the painful side of coming up with gifts for my kids, I do enjoy the look on their faces as they rip through the wrapping paper to see what’s inside. The cries of “what is it?”, “this is what I wanted” and “what’s next?” just add to the
atmosphere of the day. Or that could just be me looking forward to some drinks and yummy snacks. Either way, it’s still pretty good.
I often remind my girls how lucky they are to have the things they do because there are so many people out there who aren’t as lucky. Do you think I could convince them to hand anything over as donations? A bit of push and shove is definitely needed, especially when it comes to my youngest daughter who struggles even parting with rubbish at times. Not really sure where she gets that from, but it’s not me I promise!
However you spend and shop this festive season, do what works best for you and your family. If you can spare a thought or even a gift for those doing it tough, you’ll fill your cup even more. Whether you celebrate or not, spend the time with family and friends and create cherished memories. If you know someone who is going to be on their own, ask them to join you, their answer may just surprise you!
As we wind down and head towards the end of what can only be described as another unusual year, the anticipation builds on what we can expect from the new year ahead. No doubt whatever comes our way, it’ll become a part of the new ‘normal’. Take care over the silly season, especially to all the parents (dads!) out there who have a go on any new toys their kids get for Christmas. Remember you’re not as young as them and you will take a lot longer to recover! Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a bright, prosperous and safe start to the new year ahead. We look forward to sharing more of your stories in 2023.

One of the great benefits of writing for the LOCAL is the many interesting people you meet, all with a story to tell. Meeting Lieutenant General Mark Evans (Retired) was no exception. Here was a man who worked closely with Major General Peter Cosgrove, then as Brigadier commanding the 3rd Brigade on operations in East Timor during Operation Warden and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for distinguished command and leadership. Mark Evans served in the Australian Army between 1976-2011 and as Chief of Joint Operations between 2008-2011 when he retired. Mark, an old friend of U3A Vice President Juri Linins, was on Bribie to give a lecture and bring alive his experiences in East Timor for those completing the U3A program ‘Australia in 12 Wars’ tutored by Juri Linins.
Wow! What a talk! What an extraordinary leader! It is great to see U3A bringing such high quality speakers to the Island. My only regret was the presentation wasn't filmed so the many fabulous insights about a recent Australian military involvement in East Timor could be shared and kept for future generations and form part of the U3A learning library. After Mark's presentation, I had an opportunity to chat and ask him a few questions.
About leadership and the challenge of managing a large team.
What was important at the time was that most of the Brigade, not all of them, had never been on active service. It was quite unsettling for people because nobody knew what we were going to do, which created ambiguity and uncertainty. I think it was necessary to appear calm and steady at least. I think that calmness and steadiness and not overreacting, cascade down. They often say that an organisation looks like its commander, manager or boss, by how they carry themselves. The most important thing was calmness and a measured approach.
discipline, would you be open to a lot of communication? Pretty critical, I would have thought.
Yes, you are right. As explained in the presentation, before we went into the mountains for seven weeks. What we did during that time was establish relationships and get the measure of all your commanders and know who goes off and gets angry. You then brought them together as a team because I needed people who were stable when things went wrong and who just kept going without complaint. We just had to get on with it.
I find it very interesting with the parallel of business, government challenges and the concept of calmness. I think these days when there are problems, people are pretty explosive.
I observe the same. Here's what we would do every day. We would sit down and go through what we were going to do so that every person understood what we were doing, it was quite a
that point we've had everybody's vote. Now it is my turn and when I say we've going to do this, that is what you are doing. It was collaborative but at the same time, I was directive.
Looking over your career, what would you say was your hardest day?
The hardest days were when we lost people. The buck stops here. It is accepting responsibility and I am not sure people are so good at that. I think you know with the deaths of Australian soldiers or citizens, it is tough. You think what could I have done better? But you see, you have to accept that as part of your military life. Those are tough days when we lose people in action and everything else fades against that.
What do you say was a career highlight for you?
There are so many. I am a very positive person with the ability to turn a story of adversity into a triumph. Timor was one of those highlights. Becoming the Head of Operations was a highlight. But as I said
there are so many small things, like one of the soldiers saying something nice. Timor in terms of operations and having the strength and support.
What would your advice be for someone looking to join the armed forces?
I think it is a wonderful profession. What I liked about it was the camaraderie and teaching about life, how to deal with problems and problem-solving. You meet so many great people and develop great friendships. For example, I have just walked the Kokoda Track. A friend of mine called me and invited me to join him, to which I agreed. We had done the SAS course together in 1976. When I say I will be there, I will be there and he knows that. That's what makes the richness of management.
Tony Abbott has talked about conscription and compulsory military or community service in the last few days. Do you have any views?
I can't comment on conscription because I know there are many issues around its mechanics. But what I can say though, is that if you give, it enriches you. So, I am saying that service to your country in whatever form is a good thing and I recommend it.
Veteran's mental health issues?
Yes, I was challenged. You can't put your template on other people's trauma and understand what other people go through. I am positive about what the government has tried to do for veterans. I think it doesn't always play out well but the intent was right. I believe there is a positive understanding in the community. There is a big lesson for us, if you put your forces in harm's way, there is a cost. And if you put a monetary value around that cost it would almost be too expensive. You know there is a cost, a human cost. And you need to know that before you send anybody into action.

Extract from Issue 13 (June 2017) - Article was relevant at the time of publication.
Cranky Lizard watches in horror, and increasing anger, as the murdering and bombing, in the name of Islam, Sunni Islam, goes on and on.
Our personal freedoms are slowly being eroded away, airport terminals have become dreadful places, seeds of fear and suspicion, however small, are planted in all our minds ; Australia, as it was, is gone, replaced by a new cynical society where young blame old, and vice versa, for the travails that plague them, strident voices claim discrimination and religion is turned into race by either a stupid or politically correct media, both print and electronic.
Social media posts are filled with anger, community frustration is obvious and law abiding citizens in bars in London are reduced to fighting crazed, cowardly murdering scum with bar stools and beer glasses.
Knife wielding, crazed Islamic terrorists, attack our citizens ; and they mean to kill, they strike for the throat first, seeking to sever the main blood vessels, and, if your carotid artery or jugular vein are severed it is requires a bit more than just first aid in the street ; hence now you see some Police carrying convex, stainless steel shields to deflect the deadly knife strikes. Who are these scum and why do they do it ?
Well…..Cranky Lizard observes that they murder in the name of Allah, the God of Islam. They say so themselves as they slash innocent throats.
Why ? Because they have been allowed to live in an environment, supported by our community and thus our Governments, which has taught them hatred : hatred for us, our way of life, our institutions, our great recreation venues, our Christian Churches and Cathedrals, our clothing, our language even the food we eat.
They hate us with an insane fury, we are the cause of their miserable rubbish lives and when we are gone they will live in a Caliphate that will ensure they are all happy. Their insane fury with us is such that even writing these words, Cranky Lizard ponders what retaliation awaits ??
Cranky Lizard observes that not all Muslims are involved in this ; the vast majority are law abiding citizens who are part of our society, want to be Australians and do the best they can with what they have to live peaceful, sensible lives.
It is easy to identify the problem and to hurl insults and epithets at these killers. But, what can we really do about it ?
Cranky Lizard knows that the political power to implement the following actions will never reside within reach…but… Cranky Lizard, if given the opportunity, would use every weapon, legal, social, political, economical, military and legislative available to face this hatred down.
Inclusion in our society is the first, and very significant step. We must attack this curse which resides amongst us : programmes designed to integrate young people, programmes built around sport, theatre, education, community activity and participation……programmes designed to penetrate the enclaves where hatred is preached, programmes which would not be left to the Police, as they often are,
but programmes which, if necessary are implemented by the Courts and enacted by the community. Programmes which are compassionate, objective and sensible ; but programmes which have teeth !! No Western country so far, has succeeded in producing a successful de-radicalisation programme for its Muslim youth. Not one. Not the UK, not France, not Germany, not any EU country, not the USA, not one. Why ?
Mainly because many of the youth involved don’t want to change. Religion and its gospel of hate is a powerful force ; it easily overcomes gestures of goodwill and well- meaning inclusive actions by members of our society.
So. If they don’t want to change, then they must go : go from our society, go from our streets, go from their enclaves, go from our country.
Cranky Lizard accepts that radical ideas create anger and resistance ; but those on the ‘ watch lists ‘ of our security agencies should be interned in places away from our communities. We have done this before, in times of war, and we have the facilities to do this.
We are at war with this ideology and every person who reads this page should know this.
We are not talking about thousands of people, we are talking about hundreds. If these young men do not respond to our way of life then they should be deported to the lands of their families, despite the fact that they may be Australian citizens ; they shall forfeit that priviledge. Muslim leaders such as Dr Jamal Rifi know this and they work, within their sphere of influence to dilute the hatred for
all things Western. This hatred is not new, it is centuries old, it is fed by conspiracy theories, the most powerful being that of the Israeli Six Day War. Arab nations contend to this day, that US, UK, French and even Australian soldiers fought alongside the Israelis in bringing about Arab defeat !! Simply because to admit that Israel was able to defeat the Arab armies on its own is too shameful to admit…..so the myths and the lies compound and today’s Muslim youth believe that they are the targets of a global, western conspiracy to destroy Islam.
They are taught this relentlessly ; they believe it because it is a powerful idea…. and ideas can rarely be killed or destroyed. The fact that it is untrue is irrelevant, even inconvenient.
Our communities will never be safe from this terror until we confront it on its own terms and take drastic action to save ourselves. Actions such as internment, such as deporting those who will not be a part of our communities, such as implementing seriously rigid filtration systems on our immigration programmes and demanding that our leaders stop the ‘ nonsense ‘ about community cohesion etc., and accept the reality of what we face and talk to our communities in real terms about the threats we face and devise sensible ways to deal with it.
Surely Australia is capable of this ??
Cranky Lizard knows that Australia has highly efficient security agencies, they are bloody good at what they do, they work hard and many times they make their own luck !
But remember this, the Head of MI5 said “ we have to be lucky all the time : terrorists only have to be lucky once ! “
On October 23, Bribie Island Rotary Club facilitated a walk to raise funds for Mental Health research.
Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent fundraisers of mental health research in Australia. Since 2000, Australian Rotary Health has focused its fundraising on mental health research and in 2012 this focus narrowed to the ‘Mental Health of Young Australians’. In 2022, research grants emphasising mental health of children aged 0-12 years.
On Sunday October 23, a small group of Bribie Islanders walked under somewhat wet conditions from Brennan Park to the Bribie bridge and back. Bribie Rotary Club would like to thank that group for their partici pation. As this is an annual event, we were pleased that those who walked promised to join us again in 2023!
We would like to thank all those who registered for the walk, even if they did not walk on the day, who still donated their registration fee to Australian Rotary Health and look forward to another walk next year.
Because of the generous sponsorship of local Bribie Island businesses and individuals, our club has been able to provide almost $5000 towards research grants and post-doctoral scholarships studying ways to alle viate mental health problems in our community.
We look forward to 2023 when our Bribie Island Community can once
more display its support for this very valuable cause.
THANK YOU ONE AND ALL from Bribie Island Rotary Club.

Merry Christmas
During the last few years, the institution of Christmas has been brought into sharp focus. All through this period newspapers have been emblazoned with headlines such as ‘Christmas will not be celebrated in schools’, ‘Christmas carols banned in schools’, with the media even reporting that a Queensland school had instigated a ‘Jesus Ban’, alarming parents throughout the state.
In the last 2021 census, 44% of all Australians claimed Christianity as their religion with 39% opting for no religion at all. That’s an 8% fall in Christian numbers over the last five-year period. Fifty years ago in 1966, 88% of all Australians claimed to be Christian. In 2016, 52% of all Australians nominated Christianity as their religion with 30% nominating no religious allegiance at all. Whereas 10-years earlier in the 2006 census only 19% held no religious belief. Islam with nearly 3%, followed by Hinduism and Buddhism combined, accounted in 2021 for nearly 8% and within our multicultural society these religions are growing.
Now politically correct folk claim that Christmas has no place in modern day multicultural Australia. They want to take the Christ out of Christmas and rename the greeting and the day ‘Happy Holiday’. Christmas in July has now become a recognised celebratory event, encouraged no doubt by an encouraging retail sector. However, this challenge to the continued existence of Christmas is nothing new. Ever since Pope Julius I, in the year 350 AD when December 25 was established as Christ’s birthday, there has been endless
debates on the date’s relevance. There is no historic evidence to indicate when Christ’s birth actually took place. It is said that Pope Julius I picked the date to counter a popular Roman feast called ‘Saturnalia’ in honour of the god Saturn.
Up to the early 1600’s, England celebrated Christmas in much the same manner as it is today. Homes and churches were decorated, gifts exchanged with much eating, drinking and merriment was the vogue. But during the 1640’s the country became divided. King Charles I and his royalist army were defeated by Cromwell’s Puritans and with that victory Christmas’s festive days were numbered. The Christmas holiday was cancelled as were all festivities associated with it. While shops opened churches were closed. Christmas was reintroduced in 1660 with the accession of Charles II to the English throne. The Puritans left England to settle America in the 1680’s and continued to ban Christmas in their new home of American New England. It took until the mid-1700’s before Christmas was reintroduced into the American colonies with Christmas only becoming a designated US federal public holiday in 1870.
So what’s the answer? Are we about to bid farewell again to the festive season with Santa, the gifts, the cards, the decorated tree, the stockings, Christmas dinner and the carols. Being able to enjoy the wonderment of anticipation on children’s faces as well as the goodwill to all folk. Saying nothing of the retail industry’s potential dilemma by its possible disappearance. Merry Christmas everyone!

SHARES AND CAPITAL GAINS
I have spoken before on this subject but during this tax season I feel that I need to ensure clients have full information available when they sell their shares.
Shares can be owned any number of ways – purchased through a broker, via online bank trading, left to beneficiaries through a will, or transferred from a trust fund set up when they were younger.
The valuation of the cost price for these various situations is quite different. Purchasing them outright is obviously the money you paid for them, the same for online trading. Being left shares under a will distribution can be calculated either of 2 ways. If the original owner purchased them before capital gains tax came in (28.09.85), then the share value is the market value or sale price for up to 2 years from date of death. More than 2 years and the shares revert to market value at date of death. If the shares were purchased by the deceased after capital gains started, then the cost and date of purchase is deemed the same as for the original owner.
Receiving share via a trust fund is similar.
Sometimes shares are purchased through Dividend Reinvestment wherein the dividend received is used to purchase further shares. The cost of these new shares will
generally be the same as the franked amount received converted into the purchase. A copy of all the dividend reinvestment statements must be kept for assisting in the calculations together with the Buy contract for any initial purchase.
Maintaining documentation for cost price is critical in determining the capital gain. The difference between the cost price and the sale price is the capital gain and if the shares are held over 12 months, then possibly a 50% discount on the gain is available.

Did someone say Spring? It’s already been and gone! We blinked and 2022 is almost coming to an end. Take a moment to review some of the highlights and lowlights that came in Spring and what to consider for Summer.
Summer Guide
Tax Land Regime Shelved: The widely publicised changes to land tax were shelved after the premier met with interstate leaders; hoorah! The proposed changes, which were slated to come into effect next year, would have meant some people with properties in Queensland and interstate would have paid more tax on their land. Thankfully our peak body in real estate called for a repeal calling the changes “illogical”.
Prior to the halt, we had already seen a spike in enquiry from landlords who were aware of the changes and worried about how it would impact the expenses that come with owning an investment in Queensland. We even saw some owners biting the bullet and selling immediately to
Summer Investor Update
avoid the costly process and cashing in on record sales.
Thankfully, government leaders of other states weren’t happy about the changes either and we believe it’s a win for thousands of investors who own properties in our sunshine state.
Commencement of Rental Laws
Reforms: It is well known that from October 1, 2022, changes to rental laws were introduced across Queensland. The key changes included a framework for renting with pets & the abolishment of the “without grounds” notice to leave.
Despite the introduction of the framework for renting with pets, many property managers have not seen a spike in requests for pets in rental properties. This comes as a relief to many landlords who predicted there would be an influx of tenants hoping to have a horse in a unit; however, QCAT recently heard a case of a goat in a house!
Housing support welcomed, but supply solutions still a WIP
The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has welcomed the immediate support to sustain tenancies, but says there’s still a lot of work to be done to address housing supply, in response to the Housing Summit Outcomes Report recently released.
REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the immediate financial housing support, to be released prior to Christmas, would come as a welcome relief to the Queensland community.
“The $48.5 million towards housing support, including tenancy sustainment, loans and grants, will benefit the most vulnerable in our community by helping to keep a roof over their head and reducing cost-of-living pressures over Christmas,” Ms Mercorella said.
“Given we’re facing the tightest rental market in memory, we all hoped to see some immediate support come out of the Summit to provide some reprieve, so this is certainly a welcome announcement.”
Ms Mercorella said the report laid-bare the complexities of the housing issues Queensland is facing.
“No stakeholders at the Housing Summit were under the illusion that there would be an overnight fix to the housing crisis, but there was a clear willingness and urgency in the room to see the rubber hit the road,” she said.
“This report indicates that clearly there are matters still being explored that are a work in progress and in some respects that speaks to the complexity of the housing crisis.
“While we had hoped to see some more firm commitments on the supply side of the equation at this stage, we look forward to seeing further detail emerge and the ‘areas for further work’ progressed with the same sense of urgency as the Summit.” She said the REIQ saw opportunity in the
audit, educational campaign, and planning reforms, but was disappointed that some of the key ideas and recommendations at the Summit had not made it into this report.
“The announcement of an audit to identify state-owned land and buildings for residential use is welcomed by the REIQ, and we trust that this audit will extend to local government and Non-Government Organisations in a meaningful way,” she said.
“At the Summit, we all spoke to the importance of different levels of government and the private sector working together and this is a chance for the State Government to meaningfully lead this and put this collaborative approach into action.
“We appreciate that the Community Engagement and Awareness Campaign is a crucial step to ensure the community is on board with the change in housing diversity that needs to happen to support our growing community.
“The campaign goes hand-in-hand with the flagged planning reforms – a widely recognised key barrier to housing supply, and we will be keenly watching this space for more detail as it progresses.
“Another key theme that was raised at the Summit was Built-to-Rent models and the general consensus was that it was a sensible part of the solution, so it’s surprising that there are no new commitments surrounding this in the report.
“The REIQ will also continue to advocate for initiatives that make downsizing a much easier financial decision for older Queenslanders, to significantly free up much-needed housing stock, and our view is more can be done at all levels to achieve this, and is a missed opportunity in this report.”
Rent Increases: Many owners were fortunate enough to receive an unprecedented increase in their rental return over the past 12 months. Thankfully for renters, Queensland has seen a stabilisation in the upward trajectory of rents, which has been a welcomed relief for many struggling through the rental crisis. Queensland continues to endure vacancy rates of well below 1 percent with a housing shortage in most regional towns and capital cities.
While it is important you are maximising your return, it is equally as important you are keeping up with the mainten- ance on the property, in line with your obligations as a responsible landlord. Additionally, when discussing rent increases with your property manager you may also want to consider the affordability of the current tenant and negotiate amicable outcomes for all parties involved.
Review your Mortgage: There has been a total of 7 rate rises in 2022
(we still have one more month to get through) which means the cost of owning your investment has likely increased. And for many, despite the return on your investment increasing, you could still very well be out of pocket more than anticipated.
Now is a great time to have a broker review your loan and see if they can save you thousands across the life of your loan. It doesn’t cost anything for one of the team at LJ Hooker Home Loans to conduct a health check today.

White Patch water main permanently restored
A permanent water supply has been reconnected to White Patch, more than eight months after flooding washed away the causeway taking the water main that serviced the area with it.
Residents won’t have forgotten the rain bomb on February 27 that caused significant flooding and resulted in a 20-metre section of White Patch Esplanade washing away, along with the all-important water pipe.
Responding to the emergency at the time, Unitywater enlisted specialist contractors Moody Civil and Pipe to build a temporary water supply line with water being restored to the 73 impacted properties within three days.
While the temporary line kept the community supplied with water, Unitywater has also been rebuilding a more permanent infrastructure solution since March. The eight-month project involved detailed planning and geotechnical analysis as well as consultation with local residents, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Kabi Kabi representatives, other utilities and government agencies.
Unitywater once again teamed up with Moody Civil and Pipe on the construction, as well as Bamser, experts in the trenchless horizontal directional drilling method required to install the new 250mm diameter pipe. Unitywater Executive Manager Sustainable Infrastructure Solutions Daniel Lambert said the team behind it all overcame many challenges but successfully pulled everything together to rebuild the water
infrastructure.
“It was critical for us as a water supplier, as well as for the people living in this community, to restore White Patch’s water supply to full service with the construction of this permanent water main,” Mr Lambert said. “These were complex works that carried a level of risk, especially as some of the drilling occurred underwater. It’s a testament to the skill and professionalism of our people and our contractor partners that the end result was successful.”
Unitywater Executive Manager Customer Delivery Rhett Duncan oversaw the teams that completed reactive emergency repairs earlier this year. Mr Duncan said Unitywater would like to thank White Patch residents for their patience while the project was completed.
“It is safe to say that the residents of White Patch have endured a lot this year,” Mr Duncan said. “When the pipe washed away, we were privileged to be able to call on ‘Moodys’ who put in a mammoth effort through challenging conditions, including tidal changes, to get water back on for our customers. Our whole team effort meant water was connected before any other services, including the road reinstatement and telecommunications. Unitywater and our partners demonstrated what it means to work as a team during adversity, coming together to coordinate crews, keep residents hydrated and updated on our progress, as well as continue to deliver essential water services.”

They are known as the Orange Army, the group of selfless volunteers who turn up to help the community when disaster strikes. With the impact of Covid and other changes in people’s lives in recent years, SES groups across the Moreton Bay Region are looking for new members to join.
The group is searching for community minded people who want to help those in need, particularly with front line roles like:
- storm damage operations including temporary repairs, tarping of roofs and debris clean up.
- sandbagging operations
- chainsaw operations - land and forensic searches
- community engagement - operational support - flood boat evacuation and rescues.
Moreton Bay SES Unit Local Controller Sean Harrop said a loss of about 120 members due to life changes (moving, different jobs, starting families or no longer having time to volunteer) along with the impact of Covid and restrictions had a detrimental impact on the SES.
“Due to these factors we are looking for 100 people to join the Moreton Bay Unit across the different group areas in 2023,” Sean said. “SES is a great place to learn new skills and meet new people while helping those in need. You don’t need any particular skills to join as we will provide you with all the training and equipment needed. You just need a positive attitude and a want to help others. With how rapidly the Moreton Bay Region is growing
a large team effort to help those in need. During the February floods, we answered 2443 requests for assistance. Each request is a unique and complex response requiring multiple people trained to do a wide variety of skills.”
Members will be provided training in multiple areas including effective assistance to the community, ropes and knots, ladders, how to operate communications equipment, Australasian Interservice Incident Management System (AIIMS), working in an emergency operations centre, forensic and missing person searches, operating chainsaws, emergency lighting, 4WD operations, flood boat operations, storm damage operations, working safely at heights, first aid, CPR and more. Training is tiered to build skills and confidence, so you won’t get thrown into the deep end with a chainsaw straight away.
take all of these training courses there is a wide variety of different training people can undertake to support what they would like to do at SES,” Sean said. “We are really looking for those keen to get out in the field and help us with our core business in responding to severe weather and assisting with missing people or forensic searches.”
For Sean, joining the SES came about after going through a personal disaster experience. Sean’s family home in Brisbane was destroyed by the 2011 floods.
“This event had a profound impact on myself and my family and in many ways still affects us to this day,” Sean said. “I also remember feeling helpless and unsure about what to do afterwards until some SES volunteers came to our house after the flood water receded and asked
what they could do to help. That is when I decided that I wanted to be there for those when they are having the worst day of their lives and doing what I can do to help them - even in a small way - recover from a disaster. While we cannot always stop homes from being flooded, especially during large flood disasters or hail falling from the sky, it is rewarding knowing that we can be there to help those in need. Sometimes what people need most is someone to say it will be okay and provide a shoulder to cry on. While there is so much we can do to help those in need, that simple human connection is the most rewarding part of being an SES volunteer.”
If you are interested in joining the SES, new members are welcome to join the following groups, with training on either a Tuesday or Wednesday night:

GARDEN WITH
Hi Gardeners,
Are you ready for the demanding conditions that will be experiencing in the coming months? December in Queensland we will experience long periods of unrelenting hot, dry weather. Drought conditions are not really understood by gardeners living in the city, many gardeners use water indiscriminately. Good soil preparation, feeding, composting, mulching and water conservation are the means to successful gardening. Gardeners dealing with ‘sandy’ soil often experience great difficulty in ‘wetting’ the ground despite heavy applications of water. The soil is water repellent and dry organic matter in the soil resists moisture absorption. This is where a wetting agent is to be used. Make sure to use your wetting agent on both gardens and lawns and it should cut down your watering needs by at least one-third. Give power to your lawn and gardens and it will help with maximum distribution of soluble fertilizers.
and is useful against aphids. Lime Sulphur is an old insecticide and is still useful for the control of mites and scale. Petroleum oils or White oil is used for the control of scales and mites. It kills the pests and their eggs by suffocation. This oil can be mixed with other insecticides, with instructions on the product packaging and will sometimes advise you to add white oil as a carrier. Finally, Pyrethrins, extracted from the Chrysanthemum flowers is one of the safer insecticides used against caterpillars, aphids and beetles, but remember to spray AFTER 4pm.
Remember there are Organic alternatives.
RING IN THE NEW YEAR
As Paul Kelly says, ‘from little things big things grow’. So, if you are thinking of a garden makeover, first make a garden preparation list, which first and foremost includes laying out a garden design along with picking the appropriate plants. Define the boundaries of the garden, then eliminate all weeds and grass from the proposed area.
you may lose some plants. Investigate why and replant. Regular maintenance of your garden will be fertilizing, pruning and weeding.

GENERAL PESTICIDES
Summer is the favourite time for bugs to visit our gardens for a feast. When purchasing products to control insect pest, please read the full instructions on the packaging. The information below is a guide only.
Most of the insecticides, miticides and fungicides used to control pests and diseases are toxic to a greater or lesser extent, however, they are all safe to handle and apply, IF used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Please DO NOT exceed the recommended rates or frequencies.
• ONLY prepare enough spray for the job on hand. DO NOT spray in windy
conditions or when foliage is wet. Spray either early morning or late afternoon in order to minimise hazard to the bees, after 4pm is the best time.
• CLEAN spray equipment with clean water immediately after use including all filters and nozzles.
• WEAR rubber gloves and never eat or smoke while handling and applying pesticides.
• WITHHOLDING PERIODS is the number of days from the date of the last application to harvesting of the fruit or vegetable which can vary between 1-day to 4-weeks.
• MOWING – usual advice is to not mow 3-4 days before and after application.
• Look at your levels, drainage and the type of edging. Hiring a rotary hoe to dig the area saves you time and your back.
• Purchase a good garden soil from your local landscaping store.
• Dig through checking for weeds.
• Then the fun begins – planting out.
• Place the plants on top of the beds spacing them evenly before you place them in the soil.
• Mulching is next and will assist in weed control and soil moisture retention. Remember to keep the mulch away from the base of the plants.
Now for the important stage - watching your new plants, watering and monitoring the soil moisture. In the next 4-6 weeks
tablespoons of chocolate topping ½ teaspoon of coconut essence. Blend all ingredients together really, really well and enjoy. This delicious recipe comes from my Nana who passed it onto my Mum and then to me.
Wishing you and your family kind thoughts for a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
Happy gardening. Talk again in 2023.

Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program Visit the Natural Enemies Gallery www.ipm.ucdavis.edu for more information! Parasites live and feed in or on larger animal (host). Nearly all insect pests have at least one parasite that attacks them. Insects that parasitize other invertebrates (sometimes called parasitoids) are parasitic only in their immature stages and kill their host just as they reach maturity. Most insect parasites are hostspecific wasps or flies, and many are so small that often you won’t see them. An adult parasite can lay eggs in hundreds with resulting quick reduction in pest numbers. Parasitized aphids die and turn be black or beige. The hole in the mummy at left indicates parasite has emerged. The aphid in the middle is healthy. Some parasites attack insect eggs, wasp larvae developing within. Caterpillar parasites include the Hyposoter exiguae wasp. CLARK Convergent lady beetles prefer to eat aphids but sometimes eat whiteflies and other soft-bodied insects. Shown here are the adult (left), larva (center), and cluster of eggs (right). Predators hunt, attack, and kill their prey. Encourage these natural enemies by avoiding pesticides that kill them; choosing plants that provide them pollen, nectar, and shelter; and keeping ants out of pest infested plants. Summer Whiting and large Tailor are still being caught
There is still quite a few nice Summer Whiting being caught from Skirmish Point through to Eighth Avenue along with a couple of large Tailor in the same areas. Flathead are being caught in the shallow and catching them is very popular. They are hard fighting, fast and very tasty fish. Spanish, Spotted and Spool Mackerel are the major target species which usually
start to arrive in numbers early December. They are an ideal small boat target and can also be caught land based on our local beaches. Mackerel have razor sharp teeth that can easily snip through heavy nylon or fluro carbon leader so in most situations a length of wire trace is needed. Wire trace that is too thick or too long will greatly reduce the bite. In general, try to fish as light as possible.
Before sunrise is the best time to fish for Mackerel with most of the action being over by 9am. There is a later afternoon bite however it is not as ferocious as the morning bite period.
A change of tide also sees the fish come on the bite with the week leading up to the full moon being the best time to chase these magnificent fish. I always dispatch Mackerel straight away, bleed them and put them straight on ice.
Enjoy fishing and remember to catch only what you need!
Wishing you a Happy Holiday Season and thank you for all your support throughout the year.
and Michelle
Xmas Boating Trailer Tips
Boat trailers are often the most neglected part of many boating rigs, so here are a few trailer tips.
• While the trailer is on the ground give the wheels a good shake. Look for any movement, loosen and retighten the wheel nuts one at a time to make sure they are not seized. Jack up the trailer and spin the wheels. If they spin smoothly and quietly all is good. If you hear any grumbling bearing noises, it’s time for new bearings. A seized wheel nut or faulty bearing in your garage may be a nuisance however on the side of the road it could be a very expensive tow truck journey. Always carry a spare wheel and a suitable wheel brace and jack as the one supplied with your car may not fit your trailer.
• Check your tyres pressure as a semi deflated tyre will build up a lot of heat and may cause a blowout.
• Check all your trailer lights are in good working order.
• Put a little grease on your trailer coupling.
• Check your winch wire cable or strap for any signs of wear and tear. Always stand to the side of the winch when putting the boat on the trailer. If the winch cable snaps and flies back it could result in serious injury.
• Check your tie downs and safety chains on boat and trailer.
Fitting your trailer with a motor support bracket is always a good idea. It saves damage to the transom of your boat and the engine mounts on your outboard from road shock by allowing the load to be taken by the trailer.
With a bit of basic maintenance your next trip should be a happy and safe one.
Also make sure all canopies etc, are tied down and check that all items in the boat are secure.
Check your safety gear lifejackets, flares, anchors, epirbs, marine radio, nav lights, bilge pump etc.
Remember as the master of the vessel (YOU) are responsible for the safety of everyone on board.
Merry Xmas Safe Boating Roger

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.
Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.
