He was an inspiration to many and likely an irritation to many others, but he will definitely be missed by all. Read our tribute to Harvey on page 4.

C BellaraMeibusch Grumpy Old Men It would appear that here, on Bribie, we are being inundated by Grumpy OLD men. In the past few months, I have had to put up with foul language abuse from an OLD man in Lycra, (makes your eyes water thinking about it) as he cycles past my house. Why? Because he, does not like the wildlife signage I did NOT put up but, has my 100% support. Then there is the OLD man in a white open face helmet, riding a silly little white step through scooter, who makes offensive gestures every time More letters on page 11 New to Bribie Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the no nonsense articles of Harvey Fewings and Cranky Lizard. Good read. M Van Der Stam Bribie misses out There has been much comment recently on the proposed Bribie Hospital, specifically its location and lack of overnight beds. The location does seem to be strange, especially with the amount of fill needed and increased traffic congestion in an already busy area. School start and finish times are already a traffic nightmare. However, it is in a high visibility area and a cynic would suggest the site and signage is intended to harvest Labor votes over the next election cycle (or two). Remember that the election promise was that the hospital would be completed by the end of 2022!

Minister Turnbull asked for their advice. They proposed ‘Voice, Treaty and Truth Telling’ as a way to address our Nation’s failure to close the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. The Uluru Statement deserves our close consideration if only that the statement is what our indigenous community see as the path forward. It seems clear from repeated ‘Close the Gap Reports’ that the solutions we are currently chasing to close the gaps in life expectancy, infant mortality, prevalence of preventable diseases, incidence of domestic violence, child reading, writing and numeracy, in Year 12 attainment and employment outcomes just aren’t working quick enough. By a ‘Voice’, our indigenous community just seek the opportunity to be heard on any future close the gap Worthproposals.atry? Can’t hurt I reckon but then again, I am a ‘glass half full’ kind of guy.

C BanksiaKondratowiczBeach Glass Half Full Harvey Fewings’ ‘Contemplations’ article on Indigenous Constitutional Recognition (The Local News Issue 78, 2022) bears the watermark ‘Truth’ when ‘my opinion’ is probably more Myaccurate.contrary opinion is that the Uluru Statement from the heart’s proposal for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament via an amendment to our constitution is one our community should support. Fewings’ objection seems to be that constitutional change will not “help hundreds of Aboriginal women who are bashed with star pickets each month”. He calls for “all of us to take some responsibility here”. Responsibility is exactly what I see our indigenous community is showing with the Uluru Statement. Prime We honor this Issue to Harvey Fewings, Contemplations and Cranky Lizard. We will miss you mate. This Issue is a very sensitive issue for the LOCAL News and staff. We pay tribute and mourn the loss of Harvey Fewings who passed away suddenly late last month. Harvey has been a contributor of this newspaper for 6 years. There is absolutely no doubt he will also be missed by the readers. Harvey would tackle hard issues and sometimes (or a lot) was quite controversial in both Cranky Lizard and Contemplations. He told me he absolutely loved writing Cranky Lizard and I loved publishing it. Most of you agreed with what he wrote about and there was some who didn’t. I would like to thank everyone for your feedback over the years and assure you that Harvey read every email response. They were always welcome. Harvey was the core of this newspaper and we spoke all the time about general day-to-day operations of the newspaper. He was my mentor, my motivation and someone who steered me. He was family to me. I will be publishing some of the early Cranky Lizards in the future publications, so keep an eye out. There are some classics and bound to get some more responses from the community. As usual we cover a wide variety of local issues, while showcasing our local businesses. It is our local businesses who make this publication possible so please support them.

Policies There is a saying amongst our leaders that says ‘you never waste a crisis’. The problem with any crisis though is that it takes many years for our pollies to cause one and many more years for us to fix it. Which means the politicians can get elected based on very stupid and ill-conceived policies long enough to make a career out of it. Leaving the consequences to hit us once they’re long gone.

Prior to the last State election, a proposed seventy bed privately funded hospital was announced in the Island papers. The hospital would have been ‘state of art’ with specialist rooms and accept emergencies. Private hospitals accepting emergencies is not unusual with St Andrews in Brisbane being a case in point. Planning for this hospital was well advanced, it would have been a huge investment and is exactly what is needed on Bribie. The Palaszczuk Governments’ announcement of their proposed ‘hospital’ would have destroyed the business case for the private hospital by making the venture to risky. Pity they did not support the private venture, but that was never going to happen. Labor got elected and Bribie misses out on their much-needed hospital.

Harvey and Marjory Fewings Harvey Fewings relaxing at home Harvey in his military regalia

By Sheree

OctoberFewingsHarveyHoddinettWinston14,1941–July27,2022

There’s no denying that Harvey Fewings did life his way. While I only knew Harvey for a short time, I enjoyed our chats about mainstream media and the many topics of the moment. I think we’re all still coming to terms with his sudden departure from this world, but we can certainly take solace in the everlasting mark he has left behind. Harvey never shied away from the difficult topics. You could say he loved to ‘stir the pot’ and would almost rub his hands in glee when Letters to the Editor would relate to a recent piece he had written. It will likely only come as a shock to a few of you that Harvey and Cranky Lizard were one and the same. To be able to change character when writing is a skill not many possess, but one that Harvey not only handled well, but very much took in his Familystride. was a big part of his life and Harvey was much adored and loved by his wife Marjy, children Amy, Kate and Sam and extended family. For Marjy, Harvey was her best friend, someone who always had her back and was extremely loyal and loving to “Lifeall.was never boring,” she said. “They say the best always die young and he was one of the very best and will be greatly Theymissed.”first met in the 1980’s in Sydney when Harvey used to travel from the Northern Territory on business. Over the years they spent time on the road together, always staying in motels because he hated caravans. Marjy describes Harvey as a generous man who loved to meet and talk to people, but above all else he was highly intelligent with a great sense of humour. “He was a born leader,” she said. “He loved the bush and the people out there. He hated city life with all its nonsense and traffic. He was also a great cook, an avid reader and enjoyed music.”

But of course, there’s so many things we always learn about others and Harvey was no exception. Before we came to know him as the man who liked to ‘stir the pot’, Harvey was certainly a man of many hats. “He was a policeman before joining the Army,” Marjy said. “He was a true ANZAC, having served the Army in both Australia and New Zealand. He loved the military and later in life spent many, many years helping the Queensland RSL in various capacities, all around the state. He also loved the Northern Territory where he had spent time working in Arnhem Land and also owned a bush pub outside Alice Springs. He was a doer and got on with life.”Asone of the closest people to Harvey, Marjy was immensely proud of his writing ability and thought it was brilliant that he combined his writing both as himself and as Cranky Lizard. “I loved that he enjoyed finding a topic

“Dad once said to me, mate, as he only used my name twice in my life,” Sam said. “Mate, do you know the difference between being involved and being committed? I said what’s that dad? He said it’s a plate of bacon and eggs. The chicken’s involved but the pig’s committed. I said okay, thank you, another one of life’s lessons.”

From Harvey’s commitment to his service in the Army, the RSL, the Liberal Party and even the Collingwood Football Club, even in the darkest days of the club, he always remained committed. But it was once again, the paper that rated another “Hemention.wascommitted to his time recently with the newspaper,” Sam said. “He en joyed nothing more than the controversial articles of Cranky Lizard. At home on his desk was a thick pile of letters from people arguing with Cranky Lizard. Dad went out the way he lived, which was controversial and probably upsetting some Labor Party

Remembering a truegentleman that he knew would ruffle a few feathers on the Island,” she said. “He knew how-toput-on paper so many subjects that he was passionate about - politics, world affairs, media and so on. He was a straight shooter and wrote about many things that he believed in.” It was Harvey’s son Sam, who covered his dad perfectly in his eulogy. He spoke about the three things that truly summed up his dad - loyalty and commitment, love and humour.

Speakingsupporters.”about the love he shared with his father, Sam said it was like a rollercoaster, full of ups and downs. “He loved his children, he loved his grandchildren, and he loved his friends,” Sam said. “Towards the end of his life I sat next to him in the hospital and I asked him if he was scared of dying. We always had a pretty frank sort of relationship. He said no I’m not, I’m not afraid - typical Harvey style. He said if there’s something there, I’ll enjoy it and if there’s nothing there, I won’t know the difference.”

But saving the best for last, it really was all about Harvey’s sense of humour. “Dad was synonymous with humour and always had a saying,” Sam said. “I remember calling him when I had trouble with my boss at work and he would say ‘mate, when the elephants are stomping in the grass, the grasshoppers get out’. It took me awhile to work that out, but that was him, humour and advice all in one. That was dad, he loved a saying, he loved to entertain people, he was honestly one of the funniest men I’ve ever met. His eyes would light up and you knew a joke was “Thecoming.”other thing we know about dad is he never let the truth get in the way of a good Harveystory.” also wrote a book called The Tiger Tea Club. Understanding where we live

Camera equipment doesn’t come cheap and John’s spending has well and truly gone into the thousands, but he admits it’s all worth it to be able to take the photos that he does. He has multiple cameras (including a microscope camera) and lenses that he takes great pride in. “I bought my first camera from Harvey Norman, it was a kit and I’ve still got it,” he said. “It gets me out of bed in the morning. I’m still learning all the time because it’s a constantly changing atmosphere. I’m self-taught and with all the information online, I read everything I can. I shoot in

• The difference in the median ages between the two areas means different planning needs for the respective areas.

Did you know that 56% of the population on Bribie are now aged 60 or over, compared to only 25% in Caboolture. With 34% of Bribie’s population being over 70. Interesting isn’t it, when the state government is building a fancy medical centre, AKA a Satellite Hospital without beds and a 24-hour emergency department with an ageing population requiring high health support needs. Maybe the data is telling us we should be doing something else? I leave you to draw your conclusions. The Census data tells us many things that enable planners and business owners to develop services to serve our community's needs better. The good news is the results from the 2021 census are now available for us to explore. Some quick standout observations-

Capturing the winning image

The winning image taken by John

John with his trusty camera stands proudly in front of the prize winning feeding kookaburras raw so it needs to be processed and I know just enough to get by. The processing is really important and with Photoshop and Topaz I can do quite well.”

• 23% of properties on Bribie are rented, as compared to 37% for Caboolture. Figures exclude holiday rentals.

John talks about photography with a passion, his face lighting up as he discusses the different photo types he has taken over the years. His computer features a multitude of photo folders filled with images of birds feeding, flying and dipping into the bird bath. But there’s also photos of flowers, insects, planes, ships and even a goanna named ‘Anna’. Exactly how long is he hoping to keep pushing on the camera button? “Probably until I drop or just can’t do it anymore,” he said. “But my hands are still good, so I’ll keep going while I can.”

• Median weekly household income for Bribie $961 and Caboolture $1,318, both significantly lower than the Queensland average of $1,517. The Bribie figure would represent the high level of pensioners and self-funded retirees.

By Alistair Gray By Sheree Hoddinett For John Cupper, photography wasn’t a path he followed from an early age. Instead it was an interest he dived into after a cruise holiday about 10 years ago. He purchased a camera to take on his trip and the rest is history. He joined the Bribie Island Photography Club and started entering the club competitions of which after the first full year, he came in second by just one-point to Marj Webber. It was enough to spur on his competitive nature and has now resulted in the 79-year-old being named winner of the 2022 Brisbane Ekka senior photography competition category. John’s winning entry is a photo of two kookaburras feeding out the back of his home right here on Bribie Island. The same photo also scored John an Australian Photographic Society prize earlier this year and is also entered in other photography competitions with John waiting to hear if he’s been successful or not. “To be named the winner, I was a bit lost for words,” John said of winning the Ekka competition. “I was the grand champion and to have my photo picked as the best, it’s very humbling.” John’s back patio is often filled with the sounds of different bird species, who come in for a feed and to say hello. “My favourite subject to photograph is birds because I can sit here at home and do it,” he said. “I do go out sometimes to Buckley’s Hole or around a few other spots, but a lot of my good photographs are taken right here on the back deck. I step out and the birds are right there. At the moment we have Drongo birds and there’s about a dozen of them that sit on the fence and in the trees. I break up meat for them and they hover near me, and they even take it from your hands and fly off. We also get crows, curlews, we’ve got one Willy Wagtail that flies in all the time. There are kookaburras, miner birds, rainbow lorikeets, so many different Sotypes.”how long did it take to capture that winning shot? A mixture of patience, timing and possibly a little bit of luck worked in John’s favour. “Because we feed the kookaburras regularly, we have four that come here all the time and in the picture I took we have the mum and one of the babies,” he said. “The baby was sitting on the short perch on the back fence and the mother was on the longer one. Mum had a bug in her mouth and the baby was screaming to be fed. Mum was watching and I could see this happening and unfolding before me and had my camera ready to go. So I focused on the baby. When I photograph I keep both eyes open and I could see mum getting ready to fly and I held the button down. I’m a spray and pray type and I find it’s a really good system and then I got them beak-to-beak. I was lucky to have enough depth of field to have all wings and features in focus. In amongst all the frames was the winning shot.”

By Amelia Strazdins September is fast approaching. As daunting as that may seem, the first weekend of the month brings the promise of celebrations. The first Sunday of September is the day when we celebrate fathers across the nation. From grandads to single dads, stay-at-home-dads to those working away from home, we use this day to show our love and appreciation for these important figures within our lives. Weather permitting, many take to the passage and beaches and local restaurants are always popular. Bribie offers a number of great gift ideas from renting a barbecue boat for a day to a camping weekend away. All these activities are fun, local and allow everyone to further explore our local Whilstregion.

Father’s Day is a joyous occasion, it is important to remember those who may be separated from their loved ones. Not being able to celebrate with family in person can be a struggle for everyone, something the past few years have certainly Discussingreiterated.thesestruggles brings to light another equally important topic, men’s mental health. Although the stigma around men’s mental health has drastically altered within the past decade, many men still struggle with reaching out to ask for help. This issue can sometimes be overlooked, not necessarily being perceived by the public as a growing problem, but it is. A perfect Father’s Day gift could include a donation to a charity supporting men’s mental health or participating in a fun-run to raise awareness for the cause. It is as equally as important to show our love and support on all other days of the year, not only on September 4. Showing our support for this cause, in both an individualistic manner and through the community helps to create a positive environment to discuss mental health and the impacts it can have on a small and large scale. Donations, volunteering and raising awareness all assist in ensuring men have the appropriate access to support systems and help they may need. Issues such as these reiterate the importance of expressing our love and appreciation for those in our lives, whether that be through words, gifts, or a family day out. This Father’s Day we give a big thank you to all the dads out there for everything you contribute to our lives. From the questionable dad jokes to the sound advice, there is no doubt that you play an important role. Whether you end up spending your day fishing, sleeping in, or even working we wish you all a Happy Father’s Day for 2022.

With 16 grandkids in the mix and BIDCA keeping them busy, you would imagine life would get a little hectic at times but Gary admits, they are both very much ‘enjoying life’. “Sharon’s still very much the boss of me, telling me to slow down as well because I’m 73 at Christmas and I’m still hypo,” he said laughing. “We’ve got our grandkids and we love them all. We have the younger ones coming to visit regularly. Plus, there’s our two poodles, Bro and Pippa. Bro he’s 13 going on one, he’s just a really happy poodle and Pippa is 19 in November. I joke that Pippa’s been ‘shovel ready’ a few times. She must hear it and she comes back to life bouncing around like a puppy again.”

20 years together here and we really enjoyed the life and the people in the community,” she said. “My husband chose the unit off the plan and we came down after church every Sunday and watched it being built. We have been in the same unit ever since and even now at 93, I’m still in love with it.” Daphne says she wouldn’t think of going anywhere else. “At the time we had come to Bribie and we were living in a caravan park. We were very happy here and we had no plans of going anywhere,” she said. “We were approached by the RSL Women’s Auxiliary to see if we would like to come to Bongaree as residents. It doesn’t seem that long ago! I can still remember every detail from the day we moved in.” Daphne’s husband Bill agreed and said it’s the place he wants to be when he joins the Centenarian Club. “I could get to being 100 here! I’m 98 now and we will be celebrating it here,” he said. The gathering in the community hall recognised the proud history of the Bongaree Village’s role in supporting local communities, including its important ties to the veteran community. Members of the RSL Women’s Auxiliary, which funded the building of the first four homes in the village, were there to celebrate with cutting the cake. Today, Bolton Clarke Bongaree has 50 homes, a community hall, swimming pool and care takers unit. Village manager Sharon Rodgers is also held in high regard by residents who enjoy their safe, connected community. Sharon was named as a finalist in this year’s LASA Retirement Village Manager of the Year Awards. “It is my pleasure to be able to celebrate with our residents,” she said. “Not only to acknowledge 30 years since stage two was completed, but to be able to celebrate with existing residents who are still living independently in their units.”

By Sheree Hoddinett Gary Parsons is well known for his humour, hitting the ground running and for serving as a councillor for 14 years. These days life has taken on a slightly slower pace for Gary, or at least he’s trying anyway, as he and wife Sharon fully embrace retired life and make the most of their family time combined with their pet project Bribie Island District Community Appeal (BIDCA). Prior to leaving council, he retired and didn’t contest his seat at the 2016 election, Gary and Sharon formed BIDCA. It’s still going strong all these years later, supporting many facets of the community. “It’s a really good group to be a part of,” Gary said. “The third Sunday of every month we run our markets in Brennan Park. All our monies, goods and chattels cover our overheads such as registration, insurances, public liability those sorts of things and everything else after that goes back to the community. Sharon and I were both Rotarians and the reason we do the markets. It was a Rotary type thing, the Rotary spirit, the Rotary way and we’ve taken that over into BIDCA. Sharon puts her TLC into everything and she’s built that rapport with people. We’re not a handout but we are the no more gaps. It’s about helping those who just need an extra hand. Whether it’s a kid going to school camp or an elderly lady scrubbing her clothes because her washing machine broke, that’s what we’re Servingabout.”thedivision one (encompassing Bribie Island, Donnybrook, Sandstone Point, Toorbul and parts of Beachmere, Caboolture, Elimbah and Ningi) community for 14 years is still very much a memorable part of Gary and Sharon’s lives. “Do I miss council? Yeah, I sort of do miss it,” Gary said. “When I first retired, I did miss council for quite a while because it was get up, go out, do this, go there. You’d rack up sometimes 200-250km a day in the car shooting from Bribie, across to Caboolture, down to Strathpine and across to see somebody at Donnybrook/Toorbul and then back to Bribie. I miss that interaction but we still touch base with a lot of people.”

Here’s cheers to 30 years! Bolton Clarke’s Bongaree Retirement Village marked the milestone with residents gathering for a special celebration of the village’s history on August 13. To help mark the occasion, special guests from the community came together, including members of the Bribie RSL Women’s Auxiliary and original village residents Norma Collins, Bill and Daphne Eaton and Heather Patterson. It was a great opportunity for everyone to share how much they have enjoyed a very happy 30 years together at Bongaree. Norma admits even after 30 years, she still thinks the move to Bongaree was the best decision she and her late husband ever “Wemade.had

Gary speaks highly of Brooke Savige who became the division one councillor after he retired. “I don’t think I’ve ever deliberately gone out of my way to hurt anyone and I did what I could while I was in that role,” he said. “I would always say to people ‘at this point in time, this is how it is’, but things change, you can’t always please everyone. Brooke, well what she can do while she’s in there.”

You know you must have done something right when there’s even a park named after you. As always, Gary isn’t one to take the full credit, instead praising the most important person in his life for keeping him grounded and reminding him of the important things in life. “At first I said do you guys know something that I don’t?” Gary said laughing. “Because we usually only name parks after dead guys. I’m absolutely honoured. They worded it in a way that it wasn’t just about Gary, because for Gary to run around Australia and still have the world’s longest run record, Sharon was there. It wouldn’t have happened without her there. Sharon has always been my right arm. She’s always there to catch me. It’s a marriage of love, it’s mateship, it’s just everything.” If he had his time over again, Gary admits he would do it all exactly the same way. The BIDCA markets are held on the third Sunday of every month at the Bongaree Jetty.

Men’s Table –Men serving men

By Alistair Gray Hey, guys, would you like a night off? No dishes to wash, nappies to change, stories to read, just some ‘you’ time. Come and join us at the Men’s Table. Make some new friends, have a beer, enjoy some dinner and a yarn with some blokes just like you. Sometimes, it’s hard getting up, travelling to work in the early hours, having your head down all day and then coming home to domestic duties when you are mentally and physically exhausted. You need to be available for the kids, spend time with your partner listening to all the issues that arose during the day, and by the end of the day, there is maybe just a little time left for you. Perhaps you face other challenges. They could be financial struggles, problems at work, relationship issues, or illnesses and feel like you are tied up like a knot, not knowing what to do. You don’t want to burden others with your problems, yet you know you would feel better if you could discuss your situation.

Someone once said, ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’. That is what Men’s Table is about, creating an opportunity for men to help men. Building bonds of friendship and trust to help each other, listen and share in confidence, and show empathy, kindness, and support. On Bribie, a few guys are quietly establishing the first Men’s Table in Queensland. There are more than 60 tables in other parts of Australia. Each table is limited to 12. On Bribie, they meet once a month on the third Wednesday at 6 pm for dinner at the RSL. Then follow it with a more structured meeting. There are no age limits. If you are interested, you are welcome to attend. If you would like to attend a meeting, please contact Craig Waters 0432 669 233 or Loris Rubin 0418 300 529.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Continued from page 2 he passes-by. My neighbours had been telling me of this person and I finally saw him a few days ago. Looking straight at me, jabbing his middle finger in the air several times, looking so ridiculous it made us laugh. I have no idea who this rude OLD man is or what his problem is! On a brighter note I can sing the praises of one OLD gentleman. He is a mature kangaroo who appeared in my yard the other morning. He came out of the canal, and as the front gate was closed he could not cross to the bush. I went out to open the gate and like a true gentleman he stood back, waited for me to move away and calmly left the yard. He then waited for a car to pass before hopping across the road and off into the bush. I would suggest that these grumpy OLD men take a lesson in manners from our wildlife. BongareeKay Uncommon sense John Oxenford’s letter ‘Tell ‘em they’re dreaming’ basically nails it with the selection of the proposed site for the medical facility on Goodwin Drive.

You did what exactly! I received a publication last week with a section from the Member for Pumicestone, Ali King under the headline ‘We did it, Priority Status Delivered for Pumicestone’, in which she states that people told her that Doctor wait lists were sometimes between 4-6 weeks. This may have been the case in earlier days.Shefurther claims, ‘Yet all of this hap pened and was only going to get worse, without lasting changes’. Well changes did Furtherhappen.quoting her, ‘So I worked hard to get our area more GP access, with GP priority status restored for all Pumice Istone’.would like to remind the member that this all happened with the intervention of the Federal Member for Longmen, Hon. Terry Young, who got the ball rolling prior to the election in May, with GP’s access being a federal responsibil ity not state. This is another example of the lies being spread by this Labor Government in Queensland.

On another occasion Ms King stated that work had begun on the satellite hospital on Bribie. It appears that the only thing which has begun is a high barrier surrounding the swamp near the High School. Bearing in mind that at two previous public ‘hospital’ consul tations Ms King was not in attendance claiming she had previous engageIments.would like to see a response via this forum from the local member in regard to these matters. While the state government has been advised that there are other more suitable sites on Bribie, already cleared and levelled and with better access to public transport, it would seem common sense and government don’t seem to identify each other.

The LOCAL News would like to welcome Ms King to respond and address these claims and the concerns of our locals in our next Issue.

“Ali King claims to care about her community but when it comes to the crisis facing Caboolture Hospital, she’s nowhere to be seen,” Ms Bates said. “When the Member for Pumicestone had the opportunity to finally ask her own health minister the tough questions she chose to ignore it.

“The Member for Pumicestone didn’t ask a single question about Caboolture Hospital despite there being 12 investigations being undertaken into the hospital. This Palaszczuk Government doesn’t believe whistle blowers, doesn’t believe patients and stopped listening a long time ago.”

Bribie Island State High School has secured funding for a program that will help students better prepare for life beyond school. The high school is among 25 Queensland schools to make successful applications to the Careers Capability Development Grants Program. Eligible state schools, either stand-alone or with a cluster of other schools, were able to apply for grants of up to $25,000 to build on quality career strategies, practices and approaches. Schools from Far North Queensland to the Gold Coast have shared in a total of $250,000 as part of the Bribieprogram.Island State High School is expected to use the grant to help implement a career education project for students.

Ms Bates said it was clear the Palaszczuk government didn’t have a plan to fix the problems at the hospital.

Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates said the Member for Pumicestone attended Estimates hearings and failed to ask the health minister what the Palaszczuk government was doing to fix the problems at the hospital.

Pressure is mounting on Member for Pumicestone, Ali King to explain why she refused to demand answers about the problems plaguing Caboolture Hospital when she had the opportunity to ask her own health minister in parliament earlier this month. Ms King was sitting on a Parliamentary Health Committee which was supposed to ask the health minister questions, but she didn’t ask a single question about the health issues plaguing the hospital. Instead, she asked just four questions in four and a half hours. Only one of which had anything to do with Pumicestone. Ms King gets paid up to $30,000 a year extra to sit on this committee.

“This review found no evidence that any surgeon has practised outside of their scope of practice at Caboolture Hospital. I’ll continue to seek updates on clinical matters at Caboolture Hospital where appropriate.”

Principal Sharon Cordiner welcomed the announcement and highlighted how the grant will help the school to implement the BCF project: Building Bribie's Connected “ThisFutures.project focuses on a career education that develops transferrable skills and is designed to increase authentic opportunities and flexible pathways for students and prepare them for their lives beyond school,” Ms Cordiner said. “We will be building positive and sustainable connections between Bribie Island State High School, local primary schools and the broader Bribie Island community to improve student outcomes both on the Island and beyond the bridge.”

“As a nurse and former hospital administrator, I know how stressful it can get for the staff who are doing everything they can to keep our hospitals running,” Ms Bates said. “The embattled health minister doesn’t have a plan to fix it. The people of Pumicestone deserve so much better from their local member and from this government.”Inresponseto why she didn’t ask any questions during the Parliamentary Health Committee about the problems with Caboolture Hospital, Ms King said she received regular updates from the health minister and her office on the $399.5 million Caboolture Hospital redevelopment and regarding clinical matters at the hospital.

By Sheree Hoddinett When Ted Bakke sets his mind to something, it seems he becomes very determined to make it happen. His current mission is to break the Aus tralian record for the longest convoy of mobility scooters and on Monday October 3 (which just happens to be a public holiday), that could very well become a reality. Ted’s Wheelie Chal lenge will get rolling from Deception Bay Library and travel through to the PCYC with all wheelies not only welcome, but very much encouraged to join in. Although the current record is sitting at 126, Ted is hoping to well and truly break it. For Ted, getting around on his mobility scooter has become part of his life since a change in his eyesight meant he could no longer drive a car. The idea to break the record was initiated after a friend mentioned to him a long time ago about a mobility scooter run he had been a part of. Ted liked the idea and saw the potential to make something happen locally. “I thought that’s a really good idea and it could work,” Ted says. “I lost my wife a few years ago and because my eyes weren’t 100% anymore I also couldn’t drive, so I decided to get myself a mobility scooter. So, I thought I’m going to have a go at this record and started planning, then of course Covid kicked in and it all went by the wayside. Now we’re back on track and going ahead with it. We’re hoping to have 130-140 mobility scooters running down the street.” the region and even further afield, it seems the advertising from Ted’s mate John is starting to be noticed. “John has a big banner on the back of his scooter, which we were fortunate to have made for us and he’s been travelling around Deception Bay and even all the way down to Redcliffe,” from a guy in the Glasshouse Moun tains with four mobility scooters, so he’s interested in being a part of it all. That’s what we want, people who are keen to give it a go and have a bit of fun as well.” When Ted first started researching for his plan, he discovered the Australian record from 2010 was 126 “I’m hoping for 130. If I come under that I’ll just go do it all again next year. I’m just going to keep trying until I break it,” he says. “I’m a bit like Thomas the Tank Engine, I think I can, I know I can, I just keep going until I make something happen.”

For those who may have met Ted, they would know he has a cheeky sense of humour and he’s a true Aussie larrikin with a can-do attitude. He’s also very much a handy man. He used to fix lawnmowers and now makes different structures or objects to keep himself busy, including a guitar in the shape of a pizza and an old wheel hanging in the kitchen holding pots and pans. “Nothing perturbs me at all,” he says. “I like to have a joke and a laugh and just get on with life.”

A wheelie good record attempt

For anyone questioning whether the record attempt is all above board, Ted wants to reassure everyone, it’s all be ing done properly. He’s even spoken to local councillors, Sandra Ruck and politicians, Chris Whiting and Luke Howarth, about coming on board. “We have to have the hierarchy to make sure we do it all correctly, cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s,” Ted says. “Each person, before they leave the library on their mobility scooter, need to leave their details (name and phone number) as confirmation they’re part of it and all that will go with all the official paperwork we Withsubmit.”shirts being made for the day,

Given the nature of what Musicare does, how does Dan feel knowing he’s making a difference to others in the “Wecommunity?workwith quite an array of people with various diagnoses,” Dan says. “The mental health side of things is probably what gives me the biggest buzz because I’ve come from having mental health issues/trauma issues/ drug addiction issues, so I’ve kind of been where a lot of these people have Tobeen.me it’s kind of my payback time because a lot of people helped me in many ways and I just found that music was the way I got my stuff together. Music has the most amazing healing values. It makes me really super happy to see my clients moving forward in a way they never have Withbefore.”his life revolving heavily around the music industry, Dan has drawn inspiration from the likes of Dave Faulkner of the Hoodoo Gurus who he calls a “great mentor, friend and boss”. But he openly admits his biggest inspiration is his clients. “They’re the ones that really make you think about things like your own issues,” Dan says. “My issues are miniscule or irrelevant compared to what they’re dealing with in their lives, however they just deal with it and get on with things regardless and that really inspires me.”

As a true Aussie boy at heart, Dan grew up listening to the likes of AC/ DC and The Angels, but now has a more eclectic taste in music including rock, techno, contemporary and new industrial metal. He also plays in and writes for his own band Team Utopia.

“Our mentors are all performing artists. They’re all in bands or used to being in front of big crowds whether that be Team Utopia, Shepherd or Salt n Steel,” Dan says. “They know how to handle a big crowd, they know how to write really cool songs and music videos. When a client comes to us for a one-on-one session whether it be

Making a difference through the world of music one hour or two hours, we basically work out their musical ability and if it’s zero to 10 or whatever, we pick up the slack. Even if they want to sing karaoke that’s okay. All of our instruments and everything is state of the art broadcasting so we can make music videos with them, we can record with them, we can just jam with them. We have some clients that want to just talk music with us. Every client is different. We have what I like to call a musical theme park.”

With two studios based in Caboolture, one in Woody Point and three in Clontarf, combined with satellite studios, drumming and guitar specialists and a vocal coach, Musicare has all the necessary tools to look after everyone between the ages of four and 65 who come through their doors. Dan is blown away at how quickly the business has achieved success and attributes it to the team he has on “Itboard.still feels surreal to me at the moment and it’s growing every week,” he says. “We sort of created our own industry, it was untested. It had never been done before. We just went ahead and did it. And when I say we, I mean my team. When I started to expand, I grew to one assistant and started headhunting the right people because I knew we were going to grow and I wanted to make sure I had the right people with me working with the same mindset and the same empathy towards other people. The ethics and morals with this is probably why it’s succeeded so much because we’re not here to make money. I was working in a bedroom for about a year and now we’re in a warehouse. It’s really groovy and quite surreal.”

By Sheree Hoddinett Photo taken by Darren More Dan Nebe knows all too well what it’s like to struggle with the harsh realities of life. He makes no secret of his past battles with addiction, trauma and mental illness, but finds a way to integrate them with the biggest passion in his life, music. It’s through music that Dan has also created an outlet for others experiencing mental health struggles and those living with a disability. What initially started as a way of making an income at the peak of Covid-19, has become a fully-fledged and increasingly popular mentoring business. In the space of two years, Musicare has grown to boast six studios in the Moreton Bay Region with a team of 12 looking after 100 Whenclients.itcomes to music, there’s no denying Dan knows a thing or 10 about the industry. His foray into the world of music stems back to his teens where he played in bands before taking a leap into production. Now he wears many hats from music video director, journalist and song writer to performer and also business owner. After chatting with a friend who was working with people impacted by disability about the lacklustre music programs on offer, Dan thought about how he could help make a difference. “Because I come from the music industry and have done all my life, I thought with my experience and knowledge I could combine everything that I do,” Dan says. “But it was really crazy how it all started. I was working with the Hoodoo Gurus, I had just finished touring with Robert Cray, I had some pretty big bands as a tour manager and then Covid hit, the industry died, and I had to think outside the box. I took on one client on a Wednesday for three hours for some income and that just grew over a period of a month or two to half a dozen and that was just through word-of-mouth. I decided I was going to do this through Covid. It was going to keep me going and keep me sane as well. So, what I did was basically contact a few agencies and say here I am, doing these programs and it grew from there. That’s all without any funding or grants or anything, we just did it organically.”

“The latest song is called ‘Addiction’ which I wrote about my own addiction and how I’m not going back to that,” Dan says. “When I write songs it’s about releasing some internal things. So instead of making up a story and writing a poem or a song or whatever, to me it’s something that’s a life experience. Music has so many healing properties and when I write about things I release the energy. I think many artists would be the same. Once you release that and you’ve got that out, whether it be dance, acting, painting, theatre or music, it’s all art, it doesn’t matter. So, it’s not hard to write about, it’s being honest with yourself and letting stuff go.”

There is much excitement and discussion around the release of the draft, Yes or No question for the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament Referendum by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. At face value, you would expect this to be easy for the electorate to consider. However, the more you look at the issues, this appears to be far from a simple task.

• Creating a Voice to Parliament would create a racial divide, be divisive and slow the legislative process.

• Many agree First Nations should have recognition in the constitution. Why is this not the prime focus? With a voice coming through the normal parliamentary process. Many First Nations people feel they have fewer rights than new citizens under the existing constitution.

• Why are Torres Strait Islanders included in the referendum as they are not First Nations people or the original landowners?

Issue 80 2022 - We're here for you! 18 Community News

• There is potential to damage the great work already completed towards developing a treaty and reconciliation.

The only way to change the Australian Constitution is by holding a referendum. This means that the constitution cannot be altered without the approval of the people. Section 128 of the Constitution provides that any proposed amendment to the constitution must be passed by an absolute majority in both Houses of the Commonwealth Parliament. At the referendum, the proposed alteration must be approved by a double majority. That is: • a national majority of voters in the states and territories. • a majority of voters in a majority of the states (i.e., at least four out of six states).

The votes of people living in the ACT, the NT and any of Australia’s external territories count towards the national majority only. Voting at a referendum is compulsory and is very similar to voting at the general election. You can find an excellent graphical fact sheet that explains the double majority rule at ble-majority-fact-sheet.pdfelections/referendums/files/dou-www.aec.gov.au/

Concerns I have noticed that have been talked about include-

I have come across and no doubt there are more. We must all learn about creating an Indigenous Voice to Parliament and what it means for you and the future of Australia. It is a watershed moment, and we must participate in respectful discussion in the weeks ahead. Despite the lack of clarity, a lot of work over many years will set the base for us to move forward. Now is the time for the government to take a leadership role to remove the doubts and concerns and lead the nation to a positive outcome: one country, one people, where everyone’s voice gets heard. What is a Referendum, and how does voting work? The following extract is from the Australian Electoral Commission website referendums/.www.aec.gov.au/elections/

• There are 11 indigenous elected members of parliament providing a voice. Some are expressing concerns and do not support the proposed referendum.

• Where is the detail? What does giving a voice to parliament mean? How will it work? The lack of clarity.

By Alistair“DoGrayyou support an alteration to the constitution that establishes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?”

• The speed of the process. The Prime Minister and the Labor party have nothing to lose if the vote does not pass. The First Nations people have everything to lose. These are just a few of the issues

A group of good friends, a Sunday barbecue and great Southeast Queensland sunny winter weather. Perfect! Picture the Whilescene. waiting for the snags and steaks to blacken in their usual fashion, we chatted about all and sundry, the weather, the footie and the Logies, but steered clear of politics, or anything to do with seven members of the Sea Eagles leagues team refusing to wear the jerseys. However, the increasing threat of hostilities with China certainly got a run, as did the rising cost of living and mortgage stress but that’s as far as those got. Then someone changing the subject by mentioning his family tree. Evidently, he had recently hooked up with that ‘ancestry mob’ and had discovered that he was directly related to ‘Robert the Bruce’, the 14th century heroic King of Scotland. The next week, the ‘Bruce’ story got me thinking. I remember my Aunt Jess always maintaining that the Lancaster’s (that’s us) were directly related to ‘the Plantagenet John of Gaunt’, Duke of Lancaster, who was one of the early organisers of England’s bloodiest 30-year, 15th century civil war, ‘The Wars of the Roses’. For a second or two, I fantasised that I could have a legitimate claim to the British throne. After all, the current mob occupying Buckingham Palace didn’t go back to the 15th century, did they? Now ‘Dr Google’, as I have often found in the past is a marvellous source of information, so as a bit of a lark I typed in my name. Suffice to say not all that I found in Google’s vast memory bank, was to my liking or indeed assisted in any way my future ascendancy to the British throne. For example, there were no less than 34 Lancaster’s listed as convicts who were transported to Australia during the early 1800’s. One actually bore my name, Richard Lancaster. And he was a ‘Lifer’. This Richard Lancaster was evidently a single, blue-eyed, light browned haired English farm labourer who was twice imprisoned for poaching and was then further convicted on March 8, 1834, of cutting and maiming a John Yeates. For these crimes he received a life sentence and was transported to Van Diemen’s Land, aboard the convict ship the Lady Kennaway. Admittedly, he did behave himself during the voyage according to the records, but his previous behaviour, convictions and the 33 other Lancaster’s who joined him on his colonial jaunt, finished my need to search for illustrious ancestors! Now I’m a firm believer in the old adage, “Let sleeping ancestors lie”!

Applications open for Unitywater Community Grants

Applications are now open for the 2023 Unitywater Community Grants Program. This is a program which supports community groups across the Moreton Bay, Noosa and Sunshine Coast regions to access up to Bribie-based$5000. Fishability Queensland have previously been recipients of the community grants. President Shane Bourne sums up the purpose of the group as ‘saving lives, one trip at a time’. “Fishability Queensland saved my life, and I know it’s done the same for numerous others,” Shane said. “Men don’t talk unless they’re amongst other men. We created our men’s group wholly and solely to get the boys together, out on the boat for a fish so they’re in a safe space to share their stories and talk about whatever they’re going Thethrough.”group provides socially inclusive fishing experiences for disadvantaged people in the community and was one of 12 groups to receive a Unitywater Community Grant last year. Unitywater Executive Manager Customer and Community Katherine Gee encouraged local groups to apply for the community grants. “At Unitywater we want to support the communities where we live and work and we’re proud to have funded hundreds of essential community initiatives over the last 12 years,” she said. “These community groups are the experts at what they do and our grants help them continue their important work. Being an essential service, Unitywater understands the importance of continuous and reliable services, and these grants could mean community groups can offer their services more often or for longer. Our grants program is about supporting essential initiatives that keep communities healthy and we’re working to broaden it to match our support with where it’s really needed.” To find out more about Unitywater’s Community Program or to apply for grant, visit munity-grantswww.unitywater.com/com-

Karen Goullet with Josie, one of the senior dogs they took in to the sanctuary, who recently passed away

Karen has had a love for dogs since she was a child and that sentiment is shared by her four children as well. Life with a house full of dogs is always busy with each day following a general routine, including time out in the yard exploring and most importantly, rest time for everyone. But there’s definitely no favourites in the bunch.

By Sheree Hoddinett Their stories pull at the heart strings, but it really is a dog’s life at the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs Brisbane. The only sanctuary of its kind in Australia, the love and compassion given to older dogs seeing out their days is amazing to say the least. Now running for 16 years and initially starting out on a smaller block in Burpengary, the sanctuary has been at its Morayfield location since 2016, helping more than 60 senior dogs in that time. But as with many stories, it all started with just one. Sally was the lucky dog that started it all for Karen Goullet and her husband Jamie, the two-legged human component of this mainly four-legged furry space. Karen was working full-time and fostering dogs through Peninsula Animal Aid when she received a call about a big old Staffy who wasn’t doing too well. “I went in there after work and she was sitting there in the cage, I can still see it so clearly,” Karen says. “She had her back to the door and her head down and she was pushing against the cage and I just thought ‘oh dear’. The staff there told me she was a bit nippy but I went to her, put her head in my hands and told her she was coming home with me. That’s how it all started. We could see there was all these old dogs out there in the shelters or in the pound, they were being euthanised straight away. We realised there was this huge need, so we knew we had to do something to change that.”

The dedication, passion and love that Karen and Jamie pour into the sanctuary is evident in the paw-some group that follow them everywhere they go. They were even lucky enough to receive a visit recently from Dr Harry Cooper with Better Homes & Gardens. So watch out for them on screen.

To find out more about the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs Brisbane, check out their Facebook page where they also showcase older dogs you can adopt.

“No, there is no favourites! There are ones that get to me a little bit more but never a favourite. You just have to make sure they all get the same love, care and attention all day, every day,” Karen says. “Everyone gets a cuddle and that’s important to them as it is for us as well. We’ve never had to rehome any dogs in the 16 years we’ve been doing this and there’s been over 60 of them. It’s just so important that they know this is their home.”

To hear the horrible things these dogs have been through is enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes. But as Karen admits, you can’t focus on the bad side, you have to put all your energy into making a better life for the dogs. “In 16 years, I’ve heard it all,” Karen says. “We never concentrate on the people, just on the dogs. It’s about giving them a home. It’s about helping them and getting the care they need. If I focus on the human, the dogs miss out.”

Although told not to get too attached to her by a vet, Karen says Sally lasted more than two years before crossing the rainbow bridge. Karen admits it was Sally who truly opened their eyes to the fact there were so many old dogs out there who needed a home. “We didn’t want to do fostering, it would be too hard on the dog for them to come and go again. For an old dog consistency is important,” Karen says. “So, we thought they would come to us and stay for what was left of their lives. We didn’t want money from the public, we wanted to do it ourselves, that was important to us.”

Living the paw-fect life to see out their days

There is one thing that is still difficult to deal with and that is when one of their pooches passes away. “It never gets any easier,” Karen says. “We had to say goodbye to Josie recently, she was blind and deaf and it was tough. She came to us with no hair, her skin was bleeding and she had scabs all over her body. We actually didn’t even know what kind of dog she was. But we got her the treatment she needed, her hair started growing back and she came out of her shell. But unfortunately, within a year she was diagnosed with diabetes and when dogs get diabetes and have to have insulin, they go blind. She was already deaf then lost her sight as well, however that dog had the best nose in Brisbane. She could find me anywhere in the house. She ended up with dementia as well, so it was time. We buried her out in the little cemetery we have.”

Don’t forget, if you have any question on anything real estate, email me at jfarrenprice@ljhooker.com.au and we shall endeavour to answer it in the forthcoming edition. Banksia Beach 13 Cutter Court In the prime position, at the end of the cul-de-sac on an impressive 1,051m2 block and 465m2 under roof with a massive 50m canal frontage, this is Bribie Island living. From the moment you walk through the front door this property will impress. Featuring up to 5m high ceilings, allowing you to look down onto the formal living area from the gang way to the upstairs parents retreat and Master bedroom. The Master bedroom features your own personal verandah overlooking the canal, an ensuite with spa bath, double vanity and separate shower, plus a walk-in robe big enough for both of you. Upstairs also has the guest room with it's own ensuite ready to pamper your friends. Another 3 double sized bedrooms downstairs, 2 of which open out onto the patio, ready for that perfect sunset. There is a study that has both entry from the house and double garage with remote panel lift door, making it perfect for the home office.

The next thing is the experience and tenure of the agent in the local market, as well as their profile. For this piece, I suggest jumping onto real estate.com.au, and seeing who jumps out with their presence here, and also taking a look at the agent’s profile. Do they have testimonial? Do they have the experience and knowledge? Are they a part of an international group which allows a buyer referral programme, or are they only local with no real presence, which leads to no database. Also, check out how prominent the office is, and moreover, does their window display stand out, or do they have no office and run from their home. This is vital to getting the most exposure for your property. Also, and one of the main pieces is look at how properties are marketed. Are they using virtual tours? Do they use floor plans and/or videos? This is how your property appears to the buying public. A badly presented property can miss out on potential buyers. Whilst on websites, check who they have a global partnership with. For example, we have an association with List Globally. This means when you list for sale, as well as having access to the best realestate.com and Domain portals, your property goes live on 27 portals both domestically and internationally across 26 countries and is translated into the appropriate language. Personally, I had an enquiry from Miami not long ago, and recently a sale was made to someone from Alaska as a direct result. Another part to question is, does the whole agency work to sell my property? This is important as a lot of internal agency politics happens in a lot of other agencies here where the listing agent is the only one that gets to show your property, and not any other salesperson. This works against the seller and does not maximise the end sale result. There is a whole array of things to consider here, and if you would like to know more, please reach out.

The home features a combination of formal and informal living, all of which over looks the impressive canal views. The well-appointed 2-pac kitchen is centrally located making it the perfect entertainer, and easy to access the marble top built-in bar with under stair wine storage. A separate laundry with loads of storage and bench space with an entry to the yard and garage. Inside or out, the property has that wow factor. A pool and pontoon, make it complete for the whole family. Quality features throughout including: ducted air, ceiling fans, solar system, window shutters, chandeliers, marble and bamboo flooring. Close to the local school, bowls club, shopping complex, park lands, bird sanctuary, Pumicestone passage and the lifestyle Bribie Island offers.

EstateReal Talk

Thank you for the feedback from the last edition of Real Estate Talk, and your questions. July and August has seen an uplift in buyer enquiry here locally, and prices are holding, if not improving, on the sales side, with rental vacancy rates still low from a shortage of rental property on offer. A question from D. Brown of Banksia Beach was:“All agents seem the same, how do you recommend we choose to maximise our sale price?” Big question! There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration. We have everything from the cheap and nasty, to the extreme service levels within real estate agents in the Bribie and surrounds area. Bottom line is you get what you pay for. Pretty much every agent and agency will be competitive in regard to their fee, and there is a large difference out there with marketing. The question here is that if an agency bases themselves on a cheap fee and puts this as their point of difference, how are they able to negotiate a top price for your

home? This style of agency usually also has a cheap marketing strategy which costs next to nothing. Their aim then becomes to sell your home at any price to achieve their outlay back rather than negotiating the best price for you. Every property is different, and generic approach from an agent can cost you money. This needs to be discussed at the point of your apprais al before you list. Differentiate on the agent and not what you can save, as a good agent will get more through their negotiation skills than the initial outlay and at contract stage. A thorough appraisal meeting should take at least an hour with sales data, and the whole marketing strategy. Treat your meeting with agents as a job interview and ask the hard questions.

Green Couch This variety has a fine to medium texture and displays a mid-green colour with low to medium density. It is a tough grass which stays green provided you give it enough water and will repair as the runners grow quickly. Couch loves full sun, not thriving in shaded areas. Sir Walter (Winter Active Low Thatch Environmentally Responsible) Born and bred in Australia, the above are the desirable traits of this grass. It requires minimum water, chemical and fertilizer usage, growing in as little as 2 to 3 hours sunlight per day. It is extremely hardy and can be mowed at a variety of heights to suit the Thissituation.turfcomes

Hi Gardeners Hope this newsletter finds you gearing up for Spring. Is the grass always greener on the other side of the fence? It’s coming up to a favourite time of the year –looking after our lawns. So let the grass do its job!

Jill

To have the greenest grass in the street you should apply Dolomite to your lawn in the 3rd week of August, and every two (2) years thereafter. However, being good old Bribie soil, acidic and sandy – first, if not done before, purchase a wetting agent. Lightly water your grass and then water in the wetting agent. A couple of hours later apply the Dolomite, which sweetens the soil, which grass prefers. Ten (10) days later fertilise your lawn. Grass should then be fertilised every eight (8) weeks, which is early Spring, late Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Wait at least 48 hours before mowing. Hello to a nice lawn.

• Check your winch wire cable or strap for any signs of wear and tear. Always stand to the side of the winch when putting the boat on the trailer. If the winch cable snaps and flies back it could result in serious injury.

• Jack the trailer up and spin the wheels if they spin smoothly and quietly all good. However, if you hear any grumbling bearing noises it’s time for new bearings. Replacing a seized wheel nut or faulty bearing in your garage may be a nuisance, but on the side of the road it could be a very expensive tow truck journey.

• Check all your trailer lights are in good working order.

Let’s talk about boat trailers. They are often the neglected part of many boating rigs, so here are a few trailer tips.

Hi readers of the ‘Local’ Newspaper Tailor aplenty anywhere from Sandstone Point, Woorim Beach, White Patch and Pacific Harbour Canals, with an abundance of Bream being caught in the canals. White Patch and the Flats at Banksia Beach for Flathead and Flounder with Soft Plastics yielding the better catch, especially the Zman 4” Swimmerz. Deb Lang caught this nice Flathead flicking Soft Plastics at White Patch If you are looking for Squid, they have definitely moved in and around the Bribie bridge. Even though it is still winter, plenty of Mud Crabs have been taken in the upper reaches of the Pumicestone SummerPassage. Whiting are starting to turn up along Woorim Beach. The prime time for anglers to target Summer Whiting/ Sand Whiting is September which is just around the corner. There are many ways to catch these tasty fish ranging from using Surface Lures, Soft Plastics and of course Baits. Most popular baits being either Live Worms or Live Yabbies. I like to fish as light as possible and using baits 6 to 8lb Monofilament Line a 9ft –10ft light whippy rod for in the passage is perfect. My rig usually consists of a ball sinker, with the size of the sinker depending on where I am fishing. The ball sinker sits on top of a swivel with a fairly long trace, about 1 metre, then down to a size 1 Gamakatsu worm hook with

• Check your tie downs and safety chains on boat and trailer. With a bit of basic maintenance your next trip should be a happy and safe one.

• Fitting your trailer with a motor support bracket is always a good idea, it saves damage to the transom of your boat and the engine mounts on your outboard from road shock by allowing the load to be taken by the trailer.

I favour an early afternoon low tide where I pump Yabbies, then wait for the incoming tide to flood the same area. You will be surprised how little water you need to catch these fish. On behalf of his wife Meg, daughters Donna and Debbie, son Michael and grand-daughter Maddy, we would like to honour the life of John Love who John had a lifelong love of rugby league, playing for various local clubs in Armidale, Walcha, Port Macquarie, and Tamworth. Before signing with the St George ‘Dragon’s in 1967. As such, the family will be donating a perpetual trophy in his name with a league club in Armidale where he played as a junior. John had a wide circle of friends from the various places he lived including, Armidale, Port Macquarie, Walcha, Tamworth, the Blue Mountains, and Bribie Island. Off the field he seemed to know everyone he came across. He was fond of a beer and a chat. Loved by his family, he will be missed. ‘Lovey’

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate. Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project. If you and your friends wish to sign this petition, cut it out, complete and post to The LOCAL News, Island and surrounds, PO Box 1019, Bongaree QLD 4507. Alternatively the completed form can be scanned and emailed as a pdf or image file to belinda@islan dandsurrounds.com.au
