Cranky Lizard Speaks Welcome to Issue 36 clients and readers.

I wish to advise all readers that Cranky Lizard is taking a break for a few months, he is very busy now saving the world! He will return around June or July.

Finally, Autumn has arrived, I think we are all relived to have some cooler weather and the gardens are soaking up the rain. It is nice to see everyone’s yard come alive again with this rain.

In this issue you read all about the environmental issues in the Caboolture River and Beachmere Lake with regards to the dead fish.

This area is well known for its fishing spots and there are new rules out of which are in this issue, get to know the fishing rules, there has already been $4000 worth of fines been given out on the sunshine coast.

Last month we also lost two wonderful ladies in our region and there are tributes to both inside, VALE Sandy Miller and Barbara Ann Johnson. Both amazing ladies and I feel privileged to have known them.

I hope you enjoy your read ladies and gentlemen. Please feel free to write to me with your thoughts and views on any issues in our region.

Barbara was a well-known local mum and grandmother who passed away peacefully on the 15th of March with her family surrounding her. The passing of another generous and beautiful soul in the true sense of the word. A Lady to remember for her wonderful sense of humour and love for her family.

I knew Barbara and most of her family and she was always smiling and happy and had an incredible positive attitude that always made you feel good. Barbara leaves behind 6 beautiful children, 16 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Most of us remember Barbara out and about on Bribie Island with her daughter Mary-Anne O’Malley and her Grand Daughter Brooke O’Malley and her big boy Ted the dog having coffee at any one of our cafés here in the Island, we will miss seeing her lovely smile and never forget her wonderful sense of humour.

Dear Editor Like all authoritarian popularists, Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan is rather sparing with the truth if a situation can be exploited for political gain. In the aftermath of the Christchurch Massacre, Erdogan sought to characterise the Gallipoli campaign as a fight by Christians against Moslems.

The reality is that for the most part, World War 1 was a fight between nominally Christian Nations, but one Moslem nation fought on each side. The Ottoman Empire, of which Turkey is the modern successor, fought on the side of the Central Powers and the Hejaz, now part of Saudi Arabia, fought on the Allied Side. Moreover, the Ottomans became involved not because they were attacked by the Allied side, but when they attacked Russia a few weeks after the war began.

Kamal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey as a democratic secular state, must be turning in his grave as Erdogan moves Turkey towards being an Islamic fundamentalist totalitarian state.

Dear Editor, as I see it, there is all the talk, conjecture, forums etc. about upgrading Bribie Rd. As much as this is probably needed, what then happens to the added volume of traffic entering Bribie itself?

The road and street infrastructure on Bribie could not sustain an increase in traffic.

Certainly not Benabrow Ave. nor any of the other roads off this traffic precinct.

Sure it is easy for me sitting here to comment, but I cannot see that widening Bribie Rd will do any more than move the problem onto the island.

I think it’s now appropriate to bring to the community’s attention my Policies which I will put into place should I be elected to Mayor of Moreton Bay and each month I would like to detail them and go through them with you so you are better informed as to what I intend to do, the first in a series of my policies is “Project Priorities.”

life and family, I’ve also seen many comments that rate payers believe that certain areas of Moreton Bay are given preferential treatment over others, this will not be the case if I’m elected to Council, all divisions of Moreton Bay will get the same attention and things that are important to them such as infrastructure, roads, local improvements will be undertaken if I’m elected to serve you.

I will immediately be asking all sitting Councillors to give me a priority list of projects that need urgent attention in their respective divisions. No one Division having priority over another.

My term as your Mayor will be based on each region of Moreton Bay getting projects done that are important to them, and I’ll say right now, “there will be no large unfunded projects done using rate payer’s money as has been done in the past.”

We meet acclaimed Chef, Candice Kiss and her team at Annie Lane Café Amy Liddell Manager of Annie Lane and Candice Kiss the owner and creator A New Food Hub - Annie Lane Opens on Bribie Island Whenever I get to meet people who are passionately going about life creative new community-focussed food business, it gets my juices flowing. I am acutely aware of how much exposure we have to the art of food presentation across our airwaves – especially on televisions and via our Facebook and Instagram mediums. Everywhere we turn, we see a new café, restaurant or brewery popping up.

In this month’s Close Encounters Story, I had the pleasure to be introduced to acclaimed chef and entrepreneur, Candice Kiss and her Husband Richard Kiss who have just opened their second café, Annie Lane on Bribie Island. Annie Lane, which is the sister café to Gather and Feast in Caboolture, is yet another bold introduction of a whole food’s menu delivering a range of custom design vegan, vegetarian and meatbased dishes to the Bribie region.

What inspired the name Annie Lane?

Annie Lane is named after my Italian Nonna, Annie who has been a huge part of my life. My Nonna has dementia which can affect her short-term memory, however it has not affected her LongTerm memory, so we often take a walk back down memory lane – reflecting on the old times – this inspired the name, Annie Lane – to my beautiful Nonna and my Italian Heritage.

How do you find the right staff?

It is hard to find quality staff who share similar values and experiences. A lot of people can make coffee, however the art of making great specialty coffee takes experience and focus – we have a great barista and good team. We will have about 8 staff at Annie Lane and currently have about 14 staff at our other café, Gathering Feast. We will try to provide experiences across both cafés for our team.

It is similar to what we have done at our other café, Gathering Feast. We want to bring the community together – to create a hub where the entire family can eat foods from across the hub of cafés and other businesses. To be successful, we all have to be successful.

If I gave you an open travel voucher where would you travel?

I would travel to Italy - Well my Nonna comes from Umbria, Italy – from. I really feel at home with the Italian Culture.

What are your favourite foods?

Well firstly, I am not a vegan, but I actually enjoy eating vegan food more than I do eating meat just because I love the freshness and the flavours. I have been vegan in the past and I know how hard it can be to find these fabulous foods. I describe myself as 80% Vegan – 90% Vegetarian – 10% if I want something, I will eat it” Who is the Boss?

We always say, ‘if you want to get something happening , ask a busy person.’ When I met Candice, it was the day before opening day for Anni Lane – Richard had the roller out putting the final touches on the front café wall and Candice was parked inside calmly typing a text reply on her mobile phone.

It’s fair to say that I was somewhat reluctant to march in an begin an interview given the timing. As is true for any seasoned business women and chef, it was not a problem. Candice fronted the coffee machine to produce a delicious late made from the choice coffee supplied by seven miles coffee roasters which is a 100% organic and Fairtrade product.

What is your goal with Annie Lane?

As customers, we like to think that every café is unique by way or food style, coffee flavour and atmosphere, however unfortunately these days, we see many cafés trying the create similar menus to meet the needs of everyone only to be let down by inconsistency and in service underpinned by a revolving kitchen team.

What makes Annie Lane unique is that Candice Kiss has integrated a wealth of business and chef experience over the past 20 years and what makes the Candice Kiss story remarkable is that is all started at the age of 16. Candice left her family home in Bundaberg at the age of 16 to begin her apprenticeship in the Whitsundays. This sparked a 20 years chef career that took Candice from the Whitsundays to Sydney, Adelaide, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast.

I don’t want to blow Candice’s Trumpet, but you will have to meet Candice to understand why certain people can visualise an opportunity and deliver success. The first thing you notice about Candice or Richard is they do not look backwards – there is no rear vision

mirror in their life. Firstly, they have 5 children and two cafes which has created a 7-day start time of between 3-4 am. When you ask Candice how this life is possible, she says, “I think that a lifetime of managing food, people and logistics gives me an enormous advantage. It takes discipline and organisation to establish and sustain a family business. I love to please people and love to put a smile on peoples face and I love the reaction when people come up to me and say, ‘Oh my God, Thank you – That’s success.”

Candice said, “Opening a café on Bribie Island was always on the cards and this was our third attempt of purchasing this particular location - we are very fortunate.”

I have decide that only way to continue this story is share our Close Encounters Q&A and to ask you make an effort to visit this café – the menu is outstanding and the service is where it belongs – an inspirational man and women having a go at sharing their gift with the Community.

Well I like to think I am the boss rather than bossy – Richard and I are a formidable team and share the back of house and front of house workload. You will probably see Richard around Anni Lane much more than our other Café.

Remember that we have another family business of 5 children which we both share and strive to create the necessary quality of time together. Communication is the key to our success. It should be noted that Richard does most of the home cooking.

I must say that everything that I have learned from running kitchens we have incorporated into running our house – well mostly everything.

What food are you offering?

We will be specialising in new and interesting all-day brunch items, gluten free options and lots of vegetarian and vegan delicacies. Annie Lane is a Whole Food Café - there is a strong vegetarian and vegan focus, but we do serve meat.

Everything is made in house with plenty of cheat day foods. Our meat eaters would be stoked but they would look at the vegetarian options and be very impressed.

We will have lots of healthy weekend takeaway options available if you can’t bring yourself to leave the beach, including real fruit smoothies and individual picnic boxes.

What is your long-term goal?

People have asked me why I do this and I say, ‘well it certainly isn’t for the money – its just in my blood.’ I love to please people and love to put a smile

on peoples face and I love the reaction when people come up to me and say, ‘Oh my God, Thank you.’

What makes you successful?

Firstly, we work very hard and very long hours.

I have described success by saying - when you please people and put a smile on peoples face and they offer a big ‘Thank you’ – That’s success.

People only return when they enjoy an experience surrounded by happy people.

I also think that you need to have a reasonably competitive spirit to create and run any business. You also need to acknowledge when you get it wrong or can’t deliver on people’s expectations.

We also try to post a message on our face book page like the one below when was posted in March – we were so busy and simply couldn’t serve people fast enough.

From age 16, I use to watch Food Source Australia Live – I have never forgotten the passion Neil Perry and Martin Boetz – they were inspiring.

What is your choice of footwear?

Shoes, hmmmm ask anyone who knows me, you will never see me in anything practical and comfy. I wear heals everyday so I can complain about how sore I am - That way I’m always guaranteed a massage.

WALKING TOURS Story and Photos by MJ Donovan

Today I was invited by Karen and Eric Wallwork to join them on the Howes Way Walk. It was a great way to learn about the history of Beachmere including the names of various streets along the way. You will also see the new sign Moreton Bay Regional Council has erected to highlight the way to the Conservation Park.

I was fascinated that there was an old convent and Sisters of St Joseph retreat house on Coronation Avenue, and pleasantly amazed how much more information I found out about Beachmere on the walk.

The Howes Way Walk is one of five walks on offer in the Walking Group Class in Term Two at U3A Beachmere.

Each walk should cover a minimum of 2.5km ending with a cool drink or a “cuppa” at the U3A rooms in Progress Avenue.

Participants need to be able to walk this distance on and off pathways. The last walk in the series is along the sandy track towards the Caboolture River inlet.

Good walking shoes, hat, sunscreen and water is needed. If you think this is for you, U3A Beachmere Term Two Sign On Day is Wednesday, 17 April from 11am till 2pm at the Community Hall in Progress Ave. The U3A office will also be open Thursday, 18 April between 8.30am and 2.30pm for class sign on.

The recent shocking events in Christchurch and many other places made me think of the only time during my two years teaching at Noonkanbah in the Kimberley when I feared for my life.

It was 1987. I slept in a bough shelter with no doors or locks. They weren’t needed. If my vehicle broke down, I waited for someone to pass by, confident they would stop and help. They did.

Power of terror, strength of unity

When two policemen from the town of Fitzroy Crossing came to tell us not to leave Noonkanbah because there was a gunman around, we were were terrified.

How could we protect ourselves?

Two people had been shot dead while they stood on the banks of the Victoria River. Although Noonkanbah was four or five hours drive from there, the gunman was still at large and could be anywhere, hence the directive from the police.

To be ordered not to leave the community was, as well as being frightening, an inconvenience and disappointment for both teachers and community. At weekends most drove into Fitzroy Crossing for the football, shopping and in some cases, a drink or two at the pub.

Noonkanbah had four separate areas where people lived, with uninhabited areas in between. There were others who lived away from the main community. A small community, Millijidee, was across the river. Another, Warimbah, was 30 minutes drive away.

It also had a school, with one teacher and children from four families. These places were even more isolated than we were, and quickly moved into Noonkanbah itself. Safety in numbers.

No person was left without a bed, or at least a mattress. My two spare beds were occupied and I was glad of the company.

Our senses were alert, even as we slept.

One of the schools at Noonkanbah The drama ended when a helicopter pilot noticed a camouflaged vehicle in the bush near Fitzroy Crossing. He contacted the police and soon their aircraft was flying over the scene. When a man emerged firing a weapon at the plane, the police shot him dead.

In school, we tried to distract the kids.

Joe, the principal, played his guitar. We all sang. The Friday bush trip excursion was cancelled. I usually drove my class to the Fitzroy River for a swim in the afternoons ( I think the maximum number who could fit somewhere on my Hilux was 18!) but not while the heavy weight of fear remained present.

Five days later we heard that three

more had been shot. This time the tragedy occurred at Pentecost River, in the north. The gunman was still loose.

The police said he must have been in possession of a stack of weapons. Who he was and why he choose his victims was a mystery.

Anger and impatience were replacing terror in our community. People felt imprisoned by the orders. Surely the police must have some leads. They couldn’t be so stupid as to have one man driving around shooting everywhere, with no-one to stop him!

Josef Schwab, the German tourist with a semi-automatic rifle, was executed without trial. The Australian (whose name we don’t use) who murdered the worshippers in Christchurch will face the law. Agony, loss and devastation will haunt those left behind. Evil is abhorrent but when communities unite to support each other, its power fades.

When we are told to fear those who are different from us, we lose ourselves, but when we unite in love, we find who we really can be.

Think Globally, Act Locally At the March meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, which was held at Serenity on the Waterways Restaurant, our local member Simone Wilson MP, mentioned her new initiative “Local is the New Black in Pumiceston”.

It’s all about encouraging us to buy local. A very sound idea and one which we should all try to support as much as possible. After all, when we buy local we are supporting the community in which we live.

The catch cry to buy local is a sound one. We need to support the community and environment in which we live for a number of reasons. Some of the main ones being that the local community grows stronger as local businesses support local initiatives in a wide variety of ways including: • Donating prizes for local fundraisers • Offering pro-bono services

• Spending their own money with other local businesses • Creating jobs

The flip side of this is that business owners need to remember that alternatives are just a mouse-click away, delivery is often overnight and prices are sometimes cheaper.

Service makes a difference

There are those who will always go for a cheaper price, and there is not a lot you can do about that. BUT, there are many others who are happy to pay a little more for excellent service and to keep their funds local. It all comes down to educating our community and taking that educative approach to our business.

I’ll give you an example. I recently needed to make an expensive purchase for my office and a local business had mentioned to me last year that when I was in the market to please come to them first as they would, likely as not, be able to price match.

I contacted them earlier this year, only to receive the very terse answer that I’d better go buy from the multinational. No explanation. Nothing.

“The real estate market is the cornerstone of Queensland’s economy and employs more than 50,000 Queenslanders. We are seeing a significant slowdown already, in the lead-up to the federal election as investors wonder how this policy will affect them. Tightened lending practices are also adding to this pressure, with banks adopting highly restrictive lending criteria.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said Labor’s policy, in its current form, would see investors flee the real estate market in droves.

“The projected lost stamp duty revenue could be $2.3 billion. This puts a big hole in the Government budget.

That’s schools not funded, hospitals not funded, roads not repaired – every taxpayer and member of the community is affected,” Ms Mercorella said.

“SQM modelling clearly shows if Labor’s proposed changes are implemented the far-reaching economic impact will be significant.

“Renters will bear the most immediate economic cost, with rents potentially rising up to 22 per cent.

“The median rent for a three-bedroom house in Brisbane, according to the latest REIQ QMM report, is $435 a week. If SQM’s modelling is accurate this means renters will have to find at least another $95 a week.

“That’s a couple of tanks of fuel, that’s half the average weekly grocery bill for a young family. That’s not easy to suddenly have to find an additional $95

“Labor’s proposed negative gearing policy is reckless. It was announced at a time when Sydney and Melbourne house prices were rising rapidly and the market needed to cool. That is no longer the situation. Southern housing markets are facing falls of around 20 per cent, possibly more over the long term.

“Under Labor’s changes, house prices nationally could fall up to 12 per cent. This could equate to the average Brisbane house, valued at $675,000, losing as much as $81,000 in value.

This could push new home owners into a negative equity situation,” Ms Mercorella said.

“We urge all voters – property owners and renters – to think very carefully about the vote they cast at the ballot box and what it means for the Queensland economy, for everyday families and their budgets,” Ms Mercorella said.

The damage done is actually worse than the loss of this one sale as not only does it not inspire me to ever go back again, it has also meant I have shared my negative experience with my business network.

By contrast, I never question the prices that the local electrical store quotes. I know they are sometimes a bit more expensive, but their service is stellar so it’s a no brainer to go there for all my electrical needs. Similarly, when it comes to the butcher, pharmacy, bottle shop, restaurants and more.

I enthusiastically recommend the businesses I love, and I’m willing to bet you do too.

Avoiding Complacency

When we are in business we cannot afford to be complacent. Our customer is savvy. It must be all about them. The businesses that thrive and grow are always those which are prepared to go the extra mile. Not to slash prices. Not to price gouge. Instead, to offer genuine

service, courtesy, explain and nurture a client base.

Avoiding complacency, being on the lookout for opportunities to value add and offering good old fashioned service with a smile (even if it’s on the phone smiling is important!) is what keeps customers coming back, more importantly it’s what gets referrals for your business. At the end of the day referrals are frequently the deciding factor for customers on whether they will shop locally.

Buying local really does make a difference to our economy – so let’s get behind the movement as businesses to offer the best possible customer experience and make it easy for consumers to want to spend their $$ locally.

Bribie locals fail to measure up in labor’s health services priorities, Says Simone Wilson MP.

The health needs of Bribie locals is not a priority according to the Palaszczuk Labor Government and the proof is in writing.

In the State Parliament today (Tuesday, 26 March 2019), Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson spoke on the need for improved health services for Bribie Island residents following a letter she wrote earlier this year to the Queensland Health Minister, Steven Miles.

“With ambulance ramping rife and the Emergency Department at the Caboolture Hospital bursting at the seams, many patients are left to find alternative urgent care treatment because they simply can’t get seen”, Mrs Wilson said.

“Queensland’s public health system is failing under the Palaszczuk Labor Government and so I wrote to Minister Miles in January calling on him to allocate funding in this year’s state budget to improve urgent care health services for residents of Bribie Island”, Mrs Wilson said

“This is a serious problem when one considers that Bribie Island has the highest median age in the State at 59.6 years, compared to the rest of Queensland around 39.1 years and with an aging demographic comes the need for increased health care and urgent treatment services

“Suffice to say I was shocked to receive a reply to my letter from a Health Department officer who said he was asked by Minister Miles to reply to me.

“Such an important issue and Minister Miles could not even find the time of day to reply directly to me about the health needs of locals”, Mrs Wilson said.

Mrs Wilson said that the letter she received from the Chief Executive of the Metro North Hospital and Health Services outlined how data was gathered to justify whether or not a Minor Illness and Injury Centre on Bribie Island was needed and according to Queensland Health it is not.

The letter goes on to state that in 2017/2018:

• 4,915 patients from Bribie Island attended the Emergency Department at the Caboolture Hospital • Around half needed immediate admission

• The other half – amounting to around 6 people per day, could have been treated at a local practice.

“There is no other way to read into the letter I received than to conclude the State Labor Government won’t support any plans for an urgent care clinic on Bribie Island – they think it’s too expensive and not enough people would use it “In one foul swoop Steven Miles has knocked the wind out of Bill Shorten’s sails and his big plans for Longman as we now know the State Government do not and will not support his plans for an urgent care clinic on Bribie Island “Such a clinic would need the backing of the State Health Department, but this letter is evidence that it won’t be coming from the Palaszczuk Labor Government”, Mrs Wilson said.

Pumicestone locals have no guarantee they won’t be slugged to park when visiting their family and loved ones at the Caboolture Hospital.

State Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson put forward a Question on Notice to the Queensland Health Minister, Steven Miles asking if he would rule out parking charges on patients, their visitors and staff.

“Minister Miles confirmed that a business case was underway to build a multi-storey car park at the Caboolture Hospital however he would not rule out imposing car parking charges for patients, their visitors and disturbingly for nurses, doctors and other healthcare staff as part of this proposal”, Ms Wilson said.

“Unfortunately for nurses, they seem destined to have to pay for the privilege of attending their job at the Hospital, which is just ludicrous. Staff should not be charged for doing their jobs “Police Officers and Teachers don’t have to pay to park at work but nurses and doctors will have to “Our nurses, doctors and other healthcare staff are hard-working people with difficult jobs and they ought to be able to turn up to work without being slugged car parking fees

“It’s crazy that nurses should be expected to pay for the pleasure of parking the vehicle they use to get to work “Just how far will this Government go into our hip pockets at a time when household budgets are already stretched?

“This will be yet another additional tax on workers and in my view, and many others, making nurses pay to go to work is ethically unsound”, Ms Wilson said.

Question on Notice No. 156 Asked on 26 February 2019 MRS S WILSON asked the Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services (HON DR S MILES)— QUESTION Will the Minister rule out any plans to implement car parking charges at the Caboolture Hospital for patients, their visitors and staff?

ANSWER A new 300 space ground-level car park and all-weather road was opened at Caboolture Hospital in November 2018.

Planning for the Caboolture Hospital redevelopment is continuing. Further improvements to car parking at Caboolture Hospital will be developed to support this major upgrade and expansion of hospital services. A detailed business case is currently underway to consider options to build a multi-storey car park at the hospital.

I understand that the cost of car parking is a real concern for many patients, carers and families. That’s why last year I announced that, wherever possible, any new hospital car parks in Queensland will be built and owned by government to ensure accessible, affordable rates for patients, families and staff.

Senior Gentle Co-Ordination Exercises to Music Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music!

PLEASE START SLOWLY AND IF YOU BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE OR BREATHLESS STOPAND REST. Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure..

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are to help with your co-ordination and are similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes. Put on some music that you enjoy with a beat that isn’t too fast.

If the beat is a bit too fast then use every second beat. Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Chair Elbow to Knee

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Reach up with both hands to a point that is comfortable for you Keep one hand up and bring the other elbow down At the same time lift the opposite knee and try and touch your elbow to your knee Find the beat in your music and repeat slowly up to10 times Bring both arms down and rest Repeat with the other elbow and knee. Rest

Chair Marching

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Find the beat in your music and “March” your opposite leg and arm while seated for 15 times. Rest Repeat again when you are ready

Chair Star Jumps

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet slightly apart and feet flat on the ground Bring your arms up and your legs out in time to the beat so that you look like you are doing “Star jumps” do 5 “jumps” and rest

Chair Clap and Kick

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Clap your hands beside your right shoulder and at the same time lift your left knee. Swap sides so that you clap by your left shoulder and lift your right knee Do this in time to the beat of your music 10 times Rest Repeat when you are comfortable to do so. Rest

When I first went to my doctor about my achy bits I was annoyed when arthritis showed up in my scans. In fact when told that I had “degenerative arthritis” in my lower back I told my doctor how I was embarrassed to be a “fitness professional” with back issues. My doctor told me that “If you didn’t exercise like you do you would be almost bed ridden, Do Not Stop!“ Yes, aches and pains can make you feel exhausted and they are an easy reason not to exercise. I know because when I was overweight I used those excuses to not go to the gym with Andrew, and he would tell me that I would feel better if I exercised, and of course he eventually got to tell me “I told you so!”

I do understand it’s difficult to start.

I do understand that aches slow you down and pain does impact on your whole world. I also know that even before they tell me about their clothes getting looser and their sleep getting better, my clients tell me how surprised they are that their sore knees that they thought would stop them exercising, are not sore at all.

Yes! I get to say “I told you so”

Imagine how great it will be when the next time you see your Doctor you are told that the changes you’ve made have improved your results and they wished others would do what you did, of course they will also tell you “I told you so!”

Acne

Anyone who has ever been a teenager or has a teenager can relate to the serious psychosocial effects of acne. These can range from frustration, lowered selfesteem to social withdrawal, isolation and depression. Acne is the most common skin condition affecting 85% of our young adults and adolescents.

Acne lesions can be -noninflammatory or comedonal acne, which includes whiteheads and blackheads; or inflammatory acne lesions, which include papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.

The pathogenesis of acne involves follicular hyperkeratinisation- whereby the dead skin cells bond together and cause blockages in the hair follicles.

This is also associated with increased sebum production, colonization of the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, and inflammation. Androgens also contribute to this process by stimulating the growth and secretory activity of sebaceous glands through hormonal fluctuations.

We know that acne is multifactorial. We also know that everybody is different.

Young Adults with Disability Taking Steps to Independence With appropriate support, young adults with disabilities can take steps towards learning daily living skills and gaining independence.

The process may be a gradual one, and may require effort, time and energy, but age is certainly no barrier to learning.

Starting slowly and proceeding step by step is the best way to go. It is helpful if young adults with disability can be encouraged to choose their own friends because the process of doing so supports their personal development and helps them get more involved with the community.

That is where services like Bribie Respite & Support Services come in.

Health and Wellbeing Everybody’s deficiencies are different.

Everybody’s diet is different. What contributes to and exacerbates acne in one person can be different to the next. We know that other factors that come in to play can be diet, emotional stress, even constipation.

So what can we do about it?

We know that diets high in sugary foods, deep fried, dairy, and processed foods contribute to and exacerbate acne, so eliminating or reducing intake of these is the first positive dietary step you can take. So this means cakes, biscuits, pastries, pies, hot chips, icecream, milk, lollies, essentially any takeaway foods or those that come in a packet or box. Eliminate foods that are found to aggravate. These can be spicy foods, alcohol, hot drinks, and dairy as well as any food sensitivities you may have. Eliminating these foods will help to reduce insulin resistance and androgen production, and reduce oxidative load and the production of inflammatory compounds, all associated with the aetiology of acne.

Foods to include or increase in your diet are oily fish, fibre, fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. Also remember to increase your water intakewe need 30ml per kg of body weight. It also helps increase detoxification.

Vitamin A, Vitamin C, selenium, niacin, silica, Vitamin B5 aswell as fish oil, probiotics, evening primrose oil, as well as many herbs that address the multifactorial aetiology of acne, that can be taken orally as a herbal tincture or applied topically.

Reducing stress and regulating the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity can be addressed through lifestyle recommendations including relaxation, meditation, mindfulness and yoga.

Walking and regular exercise will help eliminate toxins from the body, and has shown to help regulate hormones and treat insulin resistance.

It is important to cleanse and moisturise regularly, get adequate sunshine and natural sea water. Try not to pick!! Try a natural face mask using clay, lavender, tea tree, oats, charcoal.

Most importantly use natural ingredients only. Harsh chemical ingredients can be drying and stripping to our skin. Our bodies, as natural healers react to this by over producing oils and sebum and entering into the viscous cycle of acne. With “clean, green” electric bikes making up the bulk of delivery vehicles, and nearly every staff member from Beachmere itself, Domino’s Beachmere certainly is taking up the environmental cause on a local level.

State Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, said supporting local small and family businesses are an essential part of our Beachmere community and I'm backing them.

“Local is the New Black in Pumicestone” is about each of us doing our part to grow our local economy and to help create local jobs. Think first about where you shop and engage your services. Ask yourself 'can I buy this locally?' and do it!”

Beachmere, once again, showed up for Clean Up Australia Day with over 40 people heading out to clean up their neighbourhood, parks and waterways on the first Sunday in March.

Sue Materman, editor of Beachmere Facebook page Beachmere Community United, organised just one of the groups and promoted the event across the page.

Local businesses always get involved as well and this year Dominos at Beachmere supported the clean up by offering all those involved in teams on the day a Pizza Voucher.

There are regular prayer times here if you are so inclined. With so many of the small villages (communes) so close we opted to stay in a closed monastery in Buonconvento where of course no one spoke English. The surroundings more than made up for this. It is amazing how signals and gestures convey messages like rubbing your stomach to indicate you are looking for a restaurant. If you stay for a few days in the villages, you can usually access other towns by local rail, a great way to see the countryside.

My last small town in this region is Pienza where the 15th century buildings are absolutely enthralling.

There is something about history that is

Peinza spellbinding. Piccolomini Palace – Pope Pius II’s summer palace and Pienza Cathedral all radiate a sense of beauty known in the time when architecture was classical yet creative. The Popes embroidered cape are on display in the Diocesan Museum along with Flemish tapestries that have stood the test of time and depict daily life on the farmers and aristocracy alike. And lastly make sure you pop San Gimignano on the travel route. You will love the cheeses there.

Getting There: From Florence drive south – all of these small villages and towns can be reached by train also but a car gives you more flexibility. Organised tours can also be arranged.

Beachmere Neighbourhood Watch Set for another year Beachmere Neighbourhood Watch held their Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 21 March with the reelection of Lyn Burgess to the position of President/Area Co-ordinator.

Bruce Adcock has been appointed Vice President after the resignation of longstanding member, and former VP, Gary Montgomery.

Dennis Burgess was re-elected as Secretary / Treasurer.

The meeting offered a vote of thanks to Gary for his dedication to his position

over the past 20 years and Beachmere NHW and acknowledged the passing of Beachmere community stalwart Madeleine Ryan.

Beachmere NHW continues to play an active role in the local community with donations of bike helmets and equipment at Beachmere State School recently and their ever obliging distribution of tamper proof licence plate screws.

NHW meets each third Thursday of the month at 9am at the BAC in Biggs Ave.

She was quite ‘forceful’ in speaking to her Queensland counterpart whom she accused of always being late in opening up for business each morning. Do I need to go any further? The new CEO had forgotten that ‘clocks on the east coast were out of sync and had been so since 1971’!!

If we must call it daylight saving time (dst) then we will. However, you must allow me to apply one condition – we label it ‘the current version of daylight saving time’ (dstcv).

By the way, there has to be another condition – we will NEVER seek to have Queensland embrace dstcv! Enough time and oxygen has already been wasted in trying to massage dstcv to suit Queensland. It is inappropriate for this state. We are far too close to the equator and the tropics.

Let’s do something different - let’s follow the wise advice of the great American inventor, BUCKMINSTER FULLER (1895-1983):“YOU NEVER CHANGE THINGS BY FIGHTING THE EXISTING REALITY. TO CHANGE SOMETHING, BUILD A NEW MODEL THAT MAKES THE EXISTING MODEL OBSOLETE”.

Dstcv is obsolete, it is an anachronism, it is a ‘sustained fake’, it is confusing, frustrating and irrelevant. It is a misnomer, it is very EXPENSIVE! One Reuter correspondent has described dstcv as ‘America’s greatest shame. It is the gr eatest continuing fraud ever perpetuated on American people’.

Am I being too harsh? These are not my words but I do agree with them. I have read or heard these definitions – as well as many others – since I launched this campaign some years ago. There are still groups of ‘so-called intelligentsia’ in south-east Queensland trying to massage dstcv to suit all or part of this great state. They are wasting their time – they are flogging a dead horse! It is the 1960’s model!!!

Buckminster suggested we ‘need a new model’!! This is the NEW MODEL - it is known as ‘THE REAL-TIME INITIATIVE’. Let’s call it the RTI or DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME NEW MODEL [DSTNM]). Really, I don’t care what it is called as long as something is done to synchronise the clocks on our eastern seaboard.

Just Let’s Do It!!!!!! Even a 2 year trial might be appropriate for starters!

How does the DSTNM differ from the dstcv?

Markedly, and the benefits are innumerable:1. It is permanent – advance A.E.S.T. just ONCE and never change it again!

Fruitful discussion at longman agriculture and farming roundtable Primary producers and farmers in the Federal electorate of Longman were provided a platform to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing their respective sectors at an Agriculture and Farming Roundtable recently.

The roundtable was hosted by Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Rural and Regional Australia Joel Fitzgibbon and Federal Member for Longman Susan Lamb in Wamuran and was attended by a diverse mix of local primary producers including: chicken, banana, strawberry and dairy farmers, a local beekeeper as well as a retired agricultural scientist.

The importance of soil health, bees, concerns about the impact of the levy payer research and development funding, the importance of a strong biosecurity system, labour shortages and the need for improved access to overseas markets were some of the issues raised by the participants at the roundtable.

“This Agriculture and Farming Roundtable has provided a valuable chance for local primary producers to speak to Joel and I about the issues facing their businesses as well as the equally important opportunity for us to listen to their needs and understand how Federal Government can support their aspirations,” Federal Member for Longman Susan Lamb said.

“There is a global demand for clean, green, safe, high quality and ethically produced food and I want farmers and

agricultural businesses in Longman to be best placed to take advantage of the region’s strengths to cater for growing markets both at home and overseas.”

The Longman Agriculture and Farming Roundtable was just one of many consultation sessions Shadow Agriculture Minister Joel Fitzgibbon has been conducting around the country.

“If Labor is fortunate to win Government at the next election, my guiding objectives as Minister will be productivity and sustainable profitability,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“I would love the opportunity to take the conversation about our food and fibre sectors to a higher and more sophisticated plane.

“I want the food and fibre sector to be modern, efficient and high tech using the latest and best innovation off the back of the best research.”

Labor’s Minimum Farm Gate Milk Price proposal received a positive response at the roundtable from local dairy farmers in light of the worsening dairy crisis which has pushed many dairy farming families to breaking point.

Drought and the challenges of a changing climate were also shared concerns for the participants.

“Our natural resource base is in decline and our ecosystems are under enormous stress. Natural resource management and a science based approach to building resilience to drought must be a priority,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.

“The primary producers we have met today share our vision and many have already demonstrated a commitment to achieving sustainable profitability.”

“We want to make sure the barriers to greater success are overcome,” Susan Lamb added.

Calling out the Liberals’ unfair 2019 Budget After six years of LNP cuts and chaos, and mere weeks before an election, this Budget was Scott Morrison’s last chance to reverse his cuts to the services that everyday Australians rely on. Instead, it locked in cuts to local schools, hospitals, and apprenticeships and training. Our community was completely overlooked in their Budget, too - there wasn't a single cent of new infrastructure funding for 2019. But, what makes it that much worse, is that the

Liberals have used a $1.6 billion underspend on the NDIS to fund their Budget. The decision to hold the NDIS to ransom so that the Liberals can continue to side with the top end of town isn’t just unfair - it’s wrong. I’ve been calling on the Government to rethink their priorities and I hope they listen. I hope they listen when they hear Labor’s plan to bring back a fair go for regular Aussies, like you and like me.

Sticking up for our community with positive policies In contrast to the Liberals’ disappointing Budget, I’m proud to supporting our community with Labor’s suite of positive policies that really set us apart.

Despite the out-of-touch Liberals siding with the top end of town, Labor is prioritizing a fair go for regular Aussies. While the Liberals are ripping $2.9 million out of Caboolture Hospital, Labor is putting the money back where it belongs and delivering a $17 million Urgent Care Clinic for Bribie Island. And where the Liberals are cutting millions out of local schools, Labor is investing in our kids. Labor’s plan is comprehensive and shaped by community consultation. Craig was the Bribie Art Centre’s Matthew Flinders Art Prize winner in 2018, with his poignant photographic portrait of three veterans.

Former and present Defence Force servicemen will display their art for the first time in a Veterans Art Exhibition. Veteran Craig Röhse (pictured), from Deception Bay, has gathered 19 Veterans and serving Defence Force members for this inaugural exhibition, presented by the RSL Deception Bay Sub Branch. It showcases a diverse range of contemporary art works. “The artists,” explains Craig, “are inviting you to get a glimpse of their inner souls, shaped by their commitment to serve in the Australian Defence Force.” The exhibition opens in the Gallery on Tuesday April 9, 6 – 8 pm with an entertaining evening which will include bush poets and pipers.

Public forum Police launch Easter demands: Fix Safety Bribie Island Road campaign Road

Locals turned out in force to a public forum today [Sunday 7 April] to voice their anger over the state of Bribie Island Road.

Organised by LNP Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson, the forum heard first-hand from locals exasperated by the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s inaction. Speaking at the event, Mrs Wilson said Labor had abandoned the community.

“People are sick to death of Labor’s stalling tactics,” Mrs Wilson said.

“The Federal Government made $20m available in July to tackle congestion and improve safety on the road, but Transport Minister Mark Bailey hasn’t lifted a finger in eight months.

“Labor needs to stop playing politics, draw up a plan to fix the road and implement it.

“Bribie Island has delivered a loud message to Mark Bailey – fix our road and fix it fast.”

The Federal Government funding was committed during the 2018 Longman by-election to enhance traffic flow on Bribie Island Road, including upgrades to key intersections, improved trafficsignalling and pavement widening at pinch-points.

But Transport Minister Mark Bailey’s department must complete a project proposal before Canberra can release the funds.

Mrs Wilson said the Minister had been invited to the forum but he failed to even acknowledge her invitation.

“I assume the traffic jams on Bribie Island Road would have eaten into his Sunday downtime,” Mrs Wilson said.

LNP Deputy Leader and Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander MP attended the forum.

Mr Mander said Labor was treating the people of Pumicestone with contempt.

“Delaying vital improvements to Bribie Island Road shows Labor’s priorities are totally wrong,” Mr Mander said.

“It’s incredible that Labor is snubbing the Federal Government’s $20m offer to fix the road.

“Only the LNP has a plan to bust congestion and get people home sooner and safer.

“The community is right behind Simone’s campaign to fix Bribie Island Road and she will not back down until it happens.”

Ms Wilson said Labor was more interested in political point-scoring than delivering better roads for Queenslanders.

“Mark Bailey can’t run the rail network and he can’t fix our roads – even when Canberra is picking up the bill,” Ms Wilson said.

“Bribie Island is growing fast and its most important road must be upgraded and planning for this happen now”.

Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services the Honourable Mark Ryan MP, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, and Aspley MP Bart Mellish joined Commissioner Ian Stewart and other emergency services last week to mark the start of the Queensland Police Service’s Easter Road Safety campaign.

Between April 5 and April 26, the QPS will coordinate a state-wide traffic policing operation designed to reduce the number of serious injuries, fatal traffic crashes and road related crime.

This operation coincides with the Easter school holidays and a period in which there is an increase in vehicles using Queensland roads.

The Easter Road Safety Campaign will include strategies such as a highly visible police presence on highways and roads, targeted operations at locations where an increase in road users is likely and static and mobile random driver testing regarding alcohol and/or drugs with a focus on locations more likely to be carrying high volumes of road users.

The Easter Road Safety campaign will target the Fatal Five – speeding, drink/ drug, fatigue, seat belt use and driver distraction/inattention.

Minister Ryan said the Queensland Government and QPS were committed to reducing the road toll.

“Each Easter period the government stands alongside the QPS to urge all Queenslanders to drive safely.

“We do this because we want there to be zero fatalities,” Minister Ryan said.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said history showed Easter could be a dangerous time on Queensland roads.

“One death on our roads is too many, and there is more we can all do to get the road toll town to zero,” Mr Bailey said.

“Speeding, distraction, alcohol and drugs, fatigue and not wearing a seatbelt continue to be the major causes of death on our roads.

“As we look forward to Easter, I urge every Queenslander to stay safe.

“By obeying the road rules when you’re driving, walking or riding – you’re helping make our roads a safer place for everyone.”

The Member for Aspley urged all road users to be extra careful on the roads this year.

“I want everyone to have a great holiday with their families but I also want everyone to make sure this holiday period is a safe one for all Queenslanders,” Mr Mellish said.

Commissioner Ian Stewart said research had shown that a high police presence on major road networks during peak holiday periods provided community reassurance and also served as a deterrent to those engaging in highrisk behaviour.

“Officers will be out in force conducting roadside testing for drugs and alcohol, as well as covert and overt speed enforcement in high-risk zones,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“Between April 5 and April 26, anyone travelling on the state’s highways can expect to encounter police.”

Typically, when we think of Easter, we imagine Easter egg hunts, lots of chocolate and a nice day with family or friends. That’s how Australians celebrate the holiday, a picnic or nice lunch is also usually on the cardspossibly depending on the weather a trip to the beach. However, looking around the world, many countries celebrate the day with unique traditions that are very different to how we celebrate the sugar filled event. In many parts of Europe, people gather together in fields and light large bonfires called Easter Fires.

These fires are usually lit on Easter Sunday or Monday and were thought to have originated from the symbolism of the fire chasing away the winter and giving way to the spring. In Sweden, interesting festive dishes include mixes of egg, herring and potatoes with pickled sardines baked in cream. Children have their own part in the celebrations, as in the days leading up to Easter, they walk around their neighbourhood exchanging handmade paintings for chocolate or sweets. A country that has a set of

traditions that you probably haven’t heard of is Norway. Norwegians refer to Easter as the season known as ‘Easter Crime’ and as you can probably assume, people in Norway take a slightly different approach to their celebrations than us over here in Australia. Popular events include heading off on holidays into the mountains or off skiing. During this time period crime thrillers become extremely popular and many people buy mystery novels. Crime detective tv shows and movies are also watched across the country.

Clearly, Easter is celebrated through a variety of different methods across the globe. Within certain areas of Greece, the community participates in ‘Pot Throwing’ which occurs on the Saturday before Easter Sunday and results in hundreds of people throwing their old kitchenware onto the street as a welcoming for spring.

Many countries host parades and community celebrations to celebrate the coming of life and a new season.

Finally, a tradition that the parents may not approve of but will certainly appeal to the kids is an age-old Bulgarian tradition. Families across the country participate in an egg fight, yes, an egg fight. It is believed that the family member that emerges from the game with their egg still intact will be the most successful member of the family for the upcoming year.

No matter where you’re from, what you do to celebrate or what traditions you take part in- everyone loves the holidays and spending time with family. So, whether this year you want to brave a family egg fight or stick with the traditional egg hunt and family lunch, make the most of your day and have a wonderful Easter.

We live in a world of ever increasing population numbers. Yet for many women child birth can be dangerous.

Every day, in developing countries, mothers risk their lives giving birth.

Hard to believe – but even harder to believe when we realise that this risk is totally unnecessary. It has been estimated that more than 80% of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained health care workers. Or put another way – what we demand as a minimum standard – in Australia!

• The Rotary Clubs of Bribie Island and Boroko’s recent project of the cervical cancer vaccination of 28,000 girls in PNG. PNG has one of the highest rates of cervical cancer in the world, with 1500 women dying every year from the disease.

New fisheries laws passed by the Palaszczuk Government mean Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers will have increased powers to crack down on black market fishers.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said making sure fishers followed the rules was critical to maintaining fish stocks.

“Our reforms are a crucial step in building a legacy of a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren and protecting jobs in our commercial and recreational fishing industries,” Mr Furner said.

“We have more compliance officers on the beat and we’ve made sure they have the powers they need to come down hard on black marketers.”

Mr Furner said black market operators damaged the fishing lifestyle for the vast majority who did the right thing and followed the rules.

“There is no excuse for black market fishing and we won’t stand for it,” Mr Furner said.

“Tony Perrett and the LNP wanted to give black market operators a five-day get-out-of-jail-free card but we stood firm to give QBFP officers the powers they need to get tough.

Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognised as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus. Rotary provides education, immunisations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics to women and children in developing countries. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant

“To date in the current financial year, QBFP Noosa officers have undertaken eight patrols to the Teewah Beach area either as part of scheduled patrol operations or in response to complaints,” Mr Furner said.

“During these patrols, officers inspected 74 people and found all complied with possession limits for molluscs.

2 Fish Kills in a very short distance from one another?

Negligence or environmental vandalism?

The last weekend in March saw Beachmere locals stressed and angry over a major fish kill in the Beachmere Lake.

Ten years ago a similar major fish kill occurred and the Council, at the time, said it would “never happen again�.

Well it has, it did and it was a “disaster�.

Moreton Bay Regional Council staff were on hand early Saturday morning trying to retrieve surviving fish and relocate them to the bay. Their attempts to aerate the water with a small trailer pump was totally insufficient and it was some time later in the day that other attempts to rectify the situation were attempted.

By Sunday morning, hundreds of dead fish and crabs were being taken from the lake and “disposed of�. Biggs Avenue was closed to traffic, and a detour in place, as water was pumped from the bay into the Lake and the pungent smell of dead fish permeated the area around the lake.

Ben Diggles, of Digsfish Services, a local aquatic specialist, was in attendance on Sunday ensuring water and fish samples were taken.

Residents of the houses around the lake met on the Monday preceding the weekend about bank retention issues and, at the time, were assured by Council staff that the aerator used to ensure adequate oxygen levels in the lake was “working�.

Unfortunately for the hundreds of aquatic animals that perished this is up for debate. Beachmere residents are upset, angry and are definitely looking for answers. As one local resident whose house backs on to the lake said, “Heads should roll�.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of fish and crabs perished in the lake to the west of Biggs Avenue. Theories abound, from low oxygen levels in the water, to low salinity and even temperature variations with a pollutant not yet ruled out.

This is the second major fish kill in Beachmere in recent weeks with another incident occurring in the Caboolture River in mid March. A third problem was also lodged with Dept of Environment & Science on Saturday, with an, as yet, unidentified problem in the Caboolture River on Saturday morning from an algal bloom or an oil slick.

including changes in organic matter, salinity, oxygenation and water temperature levels.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Public Health department said a site survey, including water sample collection, was undertaken and no further fish deaths have been apparent.

Hundreds of dead fish including thread salmon, whiting, flathead, mangrove jack, and even the hardy toadfish, were found above and below Riversleigh Road.

Fish samples were taken for analysis by the Department of Environment and Science and both they and the MBRC are awaiting the “finalised results�. A spokesman said that a number of factors would be taken into consideration

At this time, the cause of the fish kill remains unknown.

And while the Gold Coast is the state’s largest unit market, traditionally settling more than 10,000 sales a year, in 2018 this market eased, with the annual median unit price contracting 1.2 per cent to $430,000 in about 9,000 sales.

Noosa held onto its crown as the turbocharged house market, delivering an astonishing 11.7 per cent annual median house price growth, to a new high of $739,500. It also remains the most expensive house market in Queensland.

But it had a grim December quarter, losing 8.2 per cent, so all eyes are on this market to see how the next few quarters fare.

In regional Queensland Mackay continued its full-tilt charge towards recovery, with 3.9 per cent annual median house price growth, to land on an annual median house price of $343,000. While this market is still below the five-year waterline, it is on a steep trajectory towards a new high.

Geeks & Gadgets Youth Voice More Than Meets the Eye

Technology. It is all around us. From the latest smart phone, 3D printing, artificial intelligence or car technologies such as lane departure warning. It evades our every waking second.

The majority of us spend most of our waking hours staring at a digital screen; with 60% of people spending a whopping six hours a day in front of a digital device.

There are many benefits to the cutting edge technology: reduced car accidents, increased social interaction and medical advancements such as bio-printing blood vessels. Yes, technologies have made our lives easier in some respects, however, these new technologies can have an adverse effect.

Kids Matter recommends to stay away from screens for approximately half an hour before going to sleep, but why?

If you find yourself basking in the cool glow of your television or smart phone your sleep quality may be taking a hit.

Light players a powerful role in the regulation of our internal circadian rhythms, our sleep/wake cycle.

Technologies such as smart phones, televisions and tables emit blue light.

All wavelengths of light have the effect of keeping teens awake, however expose to blue light at night is particularly problematic. Exposure to blue light affects our quantity and quality of sleep.

Blue light at night serves to supress

natural melatonin, the hormone that induces drowsiness and prepares your body for sleep. Delaying its makes us alert instead of sleepy. Furthermore, migraines and eye complications have been proven to trigger and aggravate from the blue light.

The most common advice given to those who struggle to fall asleep is to power off their technological gadgets. But in this technological age trying to keep away from our devices is difficult, especially if you consider your phone as an extension of who you are. A gadget that enables you to stay connected with family and friends or unwind by catching up on your favourite shows. So what can you do?

Lucky for us, there are some gadgets invented to with this crucial issue.

Amber light which counteracts the deadly blue has been successfully solution to this issue.

One of the more popular gadgets are amber glasses. They can block over 99% of blue light wavelengths, both preventing and alleviating migraines and sleeping problems.

Another gadget is a blue light filter you can download on your smart phone.

After sunset these applications place a red overlay on the screen to change its colour temperature. This cancels the negative effects of blue light and decreases glare. This warm colour helps you to sleep faster, more peacefully and with a longer duration time.

Blue lights are dangerous and can affect you long term if you’re not careful. Migraines, sleep affairs and eye complications all affect unsuspecting individuals. There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to blue lights and sleeping – or lack of.

Class 3/4 have been on camp as part of their lessons on farming and gardening. Last week the Principal and staff were treated to a salad prepared from the garden that they had built at the beginning of the year. As part of their work with money, they also made and sold delicious ice creams dealing with maths in a very hands on way. What a great way to learn.

The air feels heavier for some people. The pain pushes down and bottles up inside until one day, they snap. If only they knew what to do, if only they had someone to talk to. Youth mental health, specifically depression and anxiety, are ongoing issues that disadvantage today’s youth individually and educationally. We must, as a community, work together to support our youth.

Research has shown that 1 in 7 school aged children suffer from a mental health problems including depression, anxiety or conduct disorder, and in some cases, more than one. Worryingly only 1 in 4 children receive the help they require.

Mental health problems have a detrimental impact on youth in many ways and for a variety of reasons. Short-term effects include fear, sadness, anger, low self-esteem and a feeling of hopeless. Long-term include suicide ideation or attempts, engagement in drug or alcohol abuse and self-harm.

Educationally, youth experience repercussions due to mental health issues. Mental health problems effect their concentration and have long term effects on their job opportunities and future. However, just like physical illness, mental health issues can get better, there are many things that can be done to help.

While mental health does not discriminate sometimes people do. The main cause of youth not talking about their mental health issues is due to stigma (a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person). The fear of being treated differently stops youth from seeking treatment and can cause them to withdraw from society.

Youth are at risk and we are doing little to nothing to prevent this. Would you really stand

to see your sibling, daughter, son, relative or friend suffer when you could do something about it?

We ought to help the innocent youth suffering from Mental Health problems. So what can you do?

If you are suffering from mental health issues please know that you are not alone. There are many support networks available on the island. Each local school has a guidance officer on hand who are focused on early identification and intervention.

Additionally, HeadSpace located on Benabrow Avenue, is a one stop shop for young people who need help with mental health. They focus on intervention and resilience building.

When shame is removed from the equation people with mental illness are more ready to seek treatment, achieve recovery and engage in meaningful activities. So I urge you to take the pledge. Refused to perpetuate or tolerate stigma. Commit to changing your language and attitude about people living with mental illness. Say goodbye to word such as “crazy” or “insane” as these words are hurtful.

Educate yourself about mental health and the effects of stigma. Ask someone who has openly shared their mental health issues what their experience is like. Knowledge is a powerful tool for dispelling myths and stereotypes.

Finally, be an ally. If you are concerned about a friend or family member touch base and see how they are feeling. It might sound simplistic but it is the best thing you can do. It lets them know that they are not alone.

Mental Health issues are not as easy to detect as a broken bone. You cannot X-ray someone’s body and see their sadness, anger or broken mind. Which is why education is so critical for ensuring the safety of today’s youth. Take the pledge today.

Queensland parent survival guide launched worldwide

“Parents who see this video will learn how to use these parenting strategies in everyday situations, but also can feel like they’re not alone and that other families face similar challenges.”

Triple P founder Matt Sanders, from the University of Queensland’s Parenting and Family Support Centre, said the video would be used by practitioners working with families all over the world.

“The video goes a bit further than ‘what do I do when this happens?’ and looks at the causes of behavioural and emotional problems in children,” he said.

It’s often said parenting doesn’t come with a manual, but a Queensland survival guide launched in Brisbane is set to help and support parents the world over.

Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women Di Farmer said Triple P’s new ‘Every Parent Survival Guide’ video, which has had its debut screening at a Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) session in Brisbane, was a core resource used by trained Triple P Practitioners.

“Every parent wants to do the best job they can, but often I have parents come up to me and they share their concerns that they want to be better parents but aren’t sure how,” she said.

“Triple P positive parenting sessions are such a fantastic way to learn positive parenting skills, and connect with other parents in your community.

“What’s so good about this resource is not just that it shows all the five key principles and 17 helpful strategies of parents, we get to hear from the

Contemplating the Flowersamongst the Showers.

Well, I did say there wasn’t much rain around in February when I wrote last month’s article, but alas, transient and frequent showers arrive early in April. It’s great weather for planting out new plants into your garden obviously, but not so good if you plan to pour a concrete slab or lay crusher dust or pavers and the like as it will soon become a quagmire pretty quickly. At one stage we were ducking in and out of the rain for 20 minutes at a time while trying to complete some basic garden renovation tasks but the worse thing was, it throws your work schedule out, like a row of falling domino cards, and as a result, juggling all confirmed appointments to accommodate the weather that caused the job delay, became quite a feat indeed. The best thing is though; it can be a forced rest, time to contemplate and compile all one’s affairs and taking care of those ministerial tasks in the office or time to purchase those supplies or update your tools perhaps. But the sad thing is; that your own garden lies waiting for your attention amongst all the juggling of duties as you look out the window at the lawns flourishing in the rain- but at least its green!

The Happy thing is; that all the gardens and lawns are hydrated finally. It seems hard to believe that 3 weeks ago, it was 35 degrees- hot and humid in comparison to the cool and moist weather conditions we have to date, which is great for the subtropical gardens indeed. It is great to see all the flowers of Hibiscus, Tibouchina, Bougainvillea, Banksia, Plumeria and Radermachera- to name a few, in the landscape still in full bloom around the district, but now that the lawns and gardens are a little moist, the weeds are also prolifically germinating rapidly also, so great time to pull those weeds before they flower if you can, while the soil is soft and moist. It’s also a great time to apply light dustings of compost or composted manures to the soil surface around your fruit trees and mulch with a feeder mulch such as sugar cane or Lucerne, also dig some compost or composted manures into your veggie gardens and cover with a layer of mulch ready for planting too. Seaweed and worm tonics that are applied to the soil when moist, is especially beneficial for plants and the soil biota (beneficial fungi and bacteria) as the micro nutrients, polysaccharides and amino acids, become immediately accessible by the plants root system.

As with every season there are pests and diseases that can plague our crops whether it be drought or floods. In the dry period of February, I have never seen so many Callistemon -Sawfly grubs and webbing caterpillars. These can defoliate some Callistemon species, but they usually bounce back.

Kind of like- natures natural pruning process. Now that the moist weather is here, the new flushes of citrus are usually attacked by leaf miner and this can be difficult to control as the tiny moth lays her eggs at night. There are pheromone traps available which can be placed in the tree to confuse the mating of these moths and are available to purchase from local nurseries and garden centres. (CLM- traps). You may of guessed that spraying chemicals is not my preferred option, and as my happy clients can attest, I would rather prune, hose off or use eco friendly options as a first choice, and at every chance I get, even if I do get stung on the nose by paper wasps, while I was dutifully hedging shrubs last week- Oh, the pain- the pain! Wishing you all a Happy Easter indeed!

There are lots of these growing around Bribie island and districts and their famous for their beautiful large and glossy, evergreen paddle shape foliage (obtuse) and their sensational white flowers with their trademark- golden throat. The P. Obtusa has a very strong and delightful fragrance and the majority of them in the district are still in full bloom this Autumn.

Plumeria Obtusa, can be slow growing at the start but can grow to 5 metres tall in the subtropics, so purchasing larger sizes will ensure immediate satisfaction. There is a dwarf pink flowering variety called P. obtusa ‘Petite Pink’ or ‘Dwarf Singapore Pink’, which only grows to 2 metres tall with lovely pink, thin petalled flowers. Another variety - Plumeria stenophylla, which has the narrow evergreen glossy leaves (similar looking to oleander leaves) and has narrow flower petals also. And another mostly evergreen variety called, Plumeria sericifolia which is a smaller growing- semi dwarf variety- to 3 to 4 metres tall and has attractive glossy green foliage and narrow starry shaped white flowers with a golden throat too.

These plants naturally ooze that tropical feel and grow well in the subtropics and our coastal conditions. If you want an evergreen tropical plant, you can’t go past these lovely Frangipanis.

Soils ain’t Soils

Rain at last!

The temps are finally cooling now in April, after that unbearable surge of hot and humid weather we had to battle throughout March this year, which has given way to some very welcome rainfall finally. Those once- parched gardens and lawns are now hydrated, and the swards are lush and green again. Last issue, I mentioned the different types of weed matting available for purchase on the market and how some of these are not only biodegradable but also hold moisture and allow moisture to seep through and of course, stop weeds from poking their heads through. Unfortunately, the soil life underneath some of the plastic weed matting can become scarce, as irrigation is not readily absorbed through to the soil profile and the plants growing around these type of weed barriers have to send their roots out as far as possible to seek out that important and vital elixir of life- as they fend for themselves. If you can imagine that your tee shirt that has fallen from the clothes line, has landed on the ground and has been rained on overnight- how wet and heavy that piece of clothing is to pick up. When using these fabric- biodegradable weed matts; it’s easy to imagine how much soil moisture will be held on the soil surface, which will attract and nourish- the soil biota (Micro- organisms including earth worms) and still allow the plants growing around these to thrive and prosper.

Especially on our sandy soils. Organic fertilisers and composted manures and worm tonics can all still be applied and will eventually find its way into the soil profile.

Of course, your mulch layer must accept moisture and allow the moisture to percolate through to the soil surface and the biodegradable fabric to be of any benefit, but you get the idea!

I was building a new garden last week from scratch and while importing large amounts of soil, plants and mulch into the new landscape project, it was also discussed with the client how easy it is to add some new plants and incorporating them into the new garden design- with easein the future, if so desired. Simply scrape the mulch back to the weed fabric- cut a hole twice the size as the potted specimen that’s to go into the ground and remove some of the new fresh topsoil underneath, then plug into the irrigation pipe running through the new garden creation.

Less than 5 minutes in total will be required to install.

In comparison to cutting some plastic weed matting that has been laid for years-to expose a hard and crusty soil that requires considerable effort to dig and create a new planting space. Speaking of soil microorganisms and soil moisture; it is a great time to replenish your soils and lawns with some nutrient rich compost or composted manures and fertiliser now- while the rain is around and as the temperatures start to cool, especially with our sandy soils, as sometimes the rainfall can leach nutrients away from soils that are low in organic matter. April 2019 Fishing Report – Bribie Island and Surrounds

The change in weather as we went through March has been encouraging for fishing, at last! After a dry start, rainfall has been more consistent, with coastal areas being about 50% above average levels. Towards the end of the month, we felt the tail-end of Cyclone Trevor, which dropped more rain.

After above average temperatures all month, Trevor cooled us down in the last few days, leading nicely into the best of Autumn fishing weather.

April is the sort of month where the summer species are still prevalent in the Passage, but you also start to see the cooler weather fish turning up as well.

Tides, moon phases, weather and wind all affect what’s biting and where but there’s usually a good chance to catch something in April, no matter what.

tuskfish is in the deeper sandy holes, near patches of rock or structure or a bit of weed. Set up your rod with strong line and tackle and try drifting over likely patches. Tuskfish are a beautiful fish, full-bodied, with the whitest flesh - great eating for a family.

Joining the tuskfish, as the weather starts to cool, are some biggish snapper.

Until this month the snapper have been mostly under-sized but the more mature snapper are showing. Southeast breezes and early morning starts are a good recipe for snapper fishing, at this time of year. North of the entrance to Pacific Harbour, along past Banksia Beach, is fine, so long as you can keep clear of boat traffic. Soft-plastic lures should work well – laced with a fish attractant, even better. Fresh bait is always good; Martin got a nice snapper, up at Banksia, using worms.

Over on the other side of the Passage, flathead have been going for anything at all. The falling tide has been the best time for flathead fishing. Intermittent showers are helping to cloud up the water at the creek entrances, so the flathead have been jumping at lures or bait. Becca’s Dad used prawns, which is a sensible choice, with the good run of prawns in Moreton Bay lately. Aaron also used prawns to catch a big muddy up at Ned’s Gutter.

Outside the Passage, there has been a bit of action but not always success.

Trevally have been caught around Smith’s Reef, using pillies and squid.

Richard had to return about 20 undersized red-throated emperors, out at Hutchies, with nothing big enough to keep. Dennis was out overnight off Moreton Island – he says there were lots of bites but nothing big took the bait.

Here are some more nice fish caught under the Bribie bridge. Alex used prawns and squid to catch these tuskfish and grassy sweetlip

The baitfish have been schooling throughout the Passage for a few weeks now, and the prawns have really come on in the past fortnight. Lots of bigger fish are hanging about as a result. Some lovely bream have been caught, along with grassy sweetlip and moses perch.

Kyle, Jake and Nathan fished south of the bridge with prawns, a couple of weeks ago, catching a couple of big bream. Closer to the bridge, Jake got onto an estuary cod.

Other places to target bream have been north of the Ningi Creek yellow marker, off Banksia Beach or further north, around Little Goat Island. The rising tide has been the best time to try these spots. There have been some notable snap-offs at times, but some good fish have also been brought in. Donna was using pilchards for bait near the Ningi Creek marker when she lost a good one.

Plenty of grunters have been taking bait in the same area, again on the rising tide. Squid and worms have been good baits to choose; however, the squid is much better if you can get onto genuine local squid – better quality and a lot more effective.

Venus tuskfish are in the passage in good numbers too, lately. That will start to slow down as the water cools, but right now you can try for them, using fresh baits like mullet fillets. Soldier crabs are also a favourite bait for them, but Caitlin and Charlotte, from Everton Park Fishing Club, caught one each at the bridge, using just chicken fillet and worm. The best place to look for

The best news of the past month has been about the sand crabs. In Korin’s words – “Crabs galore!”. She and Michael had some pots between Spinnaker Sound Marina and the bridge, which filled up pretty quickly.

Nash and family got a nice haul on the same day, from near Ningi Creek.

Probably the best area has been south of the bridge, between the first and second green markers. Chicken carcases or mullet frames, of course.

Furner said QBFP officers found the fishers with 150 undersize fish on Chambers Island in the Maroochy River on New Year’s Day 2018.

“The fishers had used a cast net to take the fish and, when approached by QBFP officers, claimed to have no knowledge of Queensland’s fishing rules,” Mr Furner said.

“We cannot stress enough that fishers have a responsibility to ensure they understand and are up-to-date with Queensland’s fishing rules.

“Fishing rules exist to protect fisheries resources and ensure a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren.

“That is why we passed our Fisheries reforms to give QBFP officers stronger powers and increase penalties for breaching the rules.”

Queensland Boating & Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) District Officer Russell Overton said: “Ignorance is no excuse and, in this instance, not knowing the rules has ended in a very costly day out”.

“All of the fishers pleaded guilty in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court and were each fined $800 with no conviction recorded,” he said.

Mr Overton said the case also highlighted the value of QBFP’s Fishwatch hotline.

“Officers responded quickly after a concerned member of the public called the Fishwatch 24-hour hotline to report suspicious activity on the island,” he said.

“The call allowed the officers to promptly intercept the fishers who tried to hide most of their catch, which included whiting, bream and flathead, and flee the island with the rest of it.

“QBFP relies greatly on the community’s support to provide relevant and timely information relating to potential offences concerning our valuable fishery resources.

“People who suspect illegal fishing activity should report it to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116.

“The registration details of the alleged offenders car and or boat should be collected and reported to the Fishwatch hotline but don’t engage with the person, as this can compromise an investigation and possibly your safety.”

Thank you to everyone who turned up to the Public Forum on Sunday, 7th April to voice your concerns about the need to upgrade Bribie Island Road and Bridge. Unfortunately we had to postpone this event from the original date of 17th March due to a weather cell looming overhead, yet despite this it was heartening to see so many turn up then as well.

What is evident is that the community by large wants the State Government to invest in fixing Bribie Island Road and wants planning to start on a new four lane bridge now, not in ten years’ time. The community also wants the State Government to get the $20 million of Federal funding from last July into play on fixing danger points on Bribie Island Road now – no more delays.

I was very pleased to have Tim Mander, Deputy Leader of the Opposition come along to the Forum to hear the concerns and to have local Councillor Brooke Savige there as well. It was a shame that the other elected officials who were invited to participate on both occasions weren’t able to attend so they too could hear firsthand from those who elect them – the public! We need to keep our action alive and you can do this by signing my petition www.FixBribieIslandRoad.com.au. I won’t be taking my foot off the throttle!

On another note, whilst it has taken a bit of argy bargy with the State Government, I am now pleased to inform that new signage will be erected by end of April on the Pumicestone Road approach to the intersection with McGarry Road to clearly direct commuters to Bribie Island.

There’s been considerable outcry from local fire brigades over the Labor Government’s plans to restructure how rural fire brigades and SES groups report, operate and are managed within the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service. It's time for Labor to stop and listen to the 42,000 volunteers in our rural fire brigades and SES who know how to serve their communities best. Dud deal on Health Care Services In recent weeks we have seen the public hospital system in crisis (Code Yellow) with every public hospital in the state’s southeast (save the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital) under extreme pressure and at full capacity. Medical chiefs said that hospital crowding is critical yet the Labor State Government denied there is any crisis and defended their inaction by the Premier saying there is nothing wrong with the health system – there’s just too many patients!

Earlier this year I wrote to the Queensland Health Minister, Steven Miles, calling on him to provide funding in this year’s State budget to improve urgent care health services for Bribie Island locals. The response I received was revealing.

It outlined that data had been gathered to justify whether or not a Minor Illness and Injury Centre on Bribie Island was needed which found it was not! It states that of all patients from Bribie Island who attended the Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department around half needed immediate admission and the other half, around 6 people per day, could have been treated at a local practice.

It closes by stating that “this type of Centre would be very expensive to staff on a 7-day basis and a very cost-ineffective use of public monies to do so for such small numbers of patients”. I recall an urgent care clinic being Bill Shorten’s big promise for Longman at the recent by-election, but we now know the Queensland Government won’t support his plans and I can not see how this can result in a positive outcome without the backing of the State Government who have responsibly for secondary health care provision.

How do we keep our small and family businesses going? – We buy local, and I’m backing them right here in Pumicestone.

Many small and family businesses are doing it tough here in the electorate. High rents, increasing operating costs and competition from big stores and online sellers add to the daily challenges they face. In Pumicestone we have the best local produce, sporting goods, hairdressers, tradies, pet supplies, bakeries, dress shops to name a few. In fact all of our local retailers, trades and services offer nothing but the very best to our community and in return they depend on our support and patronage.

I am so thrilled to launch a new campaign that shines a spotlight on backing Pumicestone by buying local and boosting local jobs. ‘Local is the New Black in Pumicestone’ is about each of us doing our part to grow our local economy and it starts with firstly asking ourselves ‘can I buy this locally?’ and doing just that. One simple question where the answer is ‘yes’ and doing it can make such a difference to a local business and our local economy.

I look forward to working with the local Chamber of Commerce to get this message out, they are as excited as I am and I thank them for their support. It is my hope that “Local is the New Black in Pumicestone’’ becomes a locally driven campaign that we all back and promote. It’s about doing our part and most of all it’s about backing Pumicestone!

Over the coming months I will be visiting every small business in the electorate to let them know we are behind them.

In Parliament Labor votes against public child sex offender register

The first responsibility of any government is to protect the community. The LNP has listened to our communities and they have asked us to put forward as a policy a child sex offender register and that is exactly what we have done.

On Wednesday, 27 March, in the Queensland Parliament, the LNP called on the State Labor Government to support our plan for major child-safety reforms, which would see the introduction of a public child sex offender register and would have also empowered parents to check the background of anyone who has regular unsupervised access to their children.

LABOR VOTED AGAINST THIS PLAN and in doing so denied every parent the opportunity to know who is living in their neighbourhood.

This was a most shameful outcome but be assured the LNP will be taking our plan to the October 2020 election because nothing should come in the way of keeping our children safe.

Shellfish pillagers be gone

There is nothing idyllic about this picture. It shows groups of people who come in their droves to pillage our precious shellfish at Sandstone Point and the concern is that many are doing it for commercial gain. Shellfish are a vital part of the ecology of our marine life, they are known as nature’s water filter and they need protecting.

Finally, after many months of lobbying the State Government to take affirmative action on the pillaging, I am pleased to report there will be prohibitions on the taking of gastropods and bivalve mollusc in Moreton Bay. This is a terrific win for our community and particularly the Sandstone Point residents who got behind my fight to protect our precious shellfish from the reckless and lawless pillagers.
