Update from the Temple President

D

ecember was also a busy month participating in the Srila Prabhupada December Book Marathon. On Saturday, 2nd December, he participated with other priests in the fire yajna for Gita Jayanti celebrations in Tooting as part of the marathon.

Closet krishna A

s a centre for alternative therapies, meditation and yoga, as well as a charity shop providing ethnic, spiritual and traditional products, Closet Krishna has continued to be a unique attraction to the local community. It has proven to be a welcome facility in an age where people are looking for answers about the meaning of life and relief from the frustrations of material existence. The programmes that run at Closet Krishna are being well-attended by regulars and there are several newcomers each week who have been inspired to participate after having visited the charity shop or meeting devotees who have gone out on book distribution. The Friday programme is always popular and many attendees have expressed interest in helping at Closet Krishna, including distributing books and introducing friends and family to the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness. Various Srila Prabhupada disciples and senior members of the ISKCON movement have been invited as guest speakers which has been appreciated by the locals. They have included Bhakti Prabhava Swami, Dayananda Swami, Kripamoya dasa, Praghosh dasa, and Tribhangananda dasa.

Spiritual Mentorship System

T

he second-tier Mentorship system is also running nicely at Closet Krishna, with mentees showing an interest in deepening their understanding of Krishna Consciousness, chanting, and following the regulative principles. They are now developing in their services to the ISKCON mission in Rochester and organising new programmes such as a regular Bhagavad Gita study group. In February 2018, there is a planned trip to Mayapur, West Bengal. The increase in ISKCON activities in the South East region, with new centres in Canterbury and Folkestone, has now inspired regular Closet Krishna devotees to want to contribute more to regional activities. Closet Krishna is looking forward to collaborating more with these other centres in 2018.

Community Development Team volunteers team update

S

ervices in the Govinda’s Restaurant kitchen attracts many volunteers. A highlight in November was that the team prepared prasadam for over 600 guests at ISKCON-London’s 48th Anniversary Gala Event. Govinda’s Restaurant Manager, Thiru Dhayalan, started to cook the night before and continued till the early hours with the help of a group of volunteers from the Dattani family. The rest of the kitchen team arrived early morning on the day of the event and prepared the remaining dishes from the menu. The same volunteers also helped pack the prasadam, bring the prasadam to the venue and assist in serving all the attendees.

“My greatest pleasure is to see all the guests being fed the delicious prasadam” Thiru Dhayalan, Govinda’s Restaurant Manager

“Coming to the Temple and doing our regular kitchen service keeps us going in our Krishna Conscious life”

ISKCON-London Annual Volunteers dinner - Saturday 4th November, St John’s Church

I

SKCON-London Volunteers Coordinators, Dhaval Dattani and Devaki devi dasi, organised the Annual Volunteers Dinner which took place at St. John’s Church in Marble Arch.

“This was truly an inspiring event and we got the chance to get to know volunteers serving in various areas at ISKCON-London. The mood of the event really touched my heart” Volunteer “We felt like it was our own family event and thoroughly enjoyed it” Volunteer

Themed “Ocean of Devotion”, the event included a fun ice-breaker for the volunteers to get to know each other better, a talk by Shyamasundara dasa from his recently-launched book, “Chasing Rhinos with the Swami”, a skit titled “Battle with the Mind” by Syamananda dasa, appreciation talks by the Temple President and the Volunteers Coordinators, and kirtans. As part of the appreciation talks, Charles Renwick who has volunteered at ISKCON-London for the last 29 years, was honoured on the stage. Volunteers were treated to a Mexican prasadam feast devised by Thiru Dhayalan and were gifted ISKCONLondon branded woolie hats.

ISKCON-London’s 48th Anniversary Gala Event - Sunday 26th November, Camden Centre

T

he 48th Anniversary Gala Event, themed “Blessings”, was managed by Ashika Patel, with core team members consisting of Davide Rocchi, Devaki devi dasi, Dhaval Dattani, Kapila Monet, Krishna Kirtan dasa, and Natasha Menon. In the leadup to and on the day, they were supported by a team of approximately 100 volunteers. Over 500 guests attended the event and were served a traditional Indian prasadam feast on arrival. The programme began with a beautiful live presentation of tracks from Radha Krishna Records’ new Mantra Lounge Volume 2 album. Ananda Monet, Govinda Priya devi dasi, and Jahnavi Harrison (Jahnavi Jivana devi dasi) sang and were supported by a team of professional musicians. The event then continued with an exclusive talk by Mr. Goyal, the gentleman who donated Radha Krishna Deities to Srila Prabhupada who later named Them, Sri Sri RadhaLondonisvara, The Lordships of London. Mondakini devi dasi, Srila Prabhupada disciple, then spoke about her own close association with Srila Prabhupada. As part of the programme, The Bhaktivedanta Players were invited to perform a drama titled “Four Blessings”. The evening ended with children in the community enthusiastically performing Guru Puja and Tribhangananda dasa leading the kirtan. All Srila Prabhupada disciples present were invited to offer flowers to Srila Prabhupada during Guru Puja.

“The evening was truly magical. Capturing the theme of “blessings”, the audience was taken on a journey of giving, receiving and sharing a variety of blessings from the moment they stepped through the door (being greeted by Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara’s padukas) to the very end where everyone was singing and dancing to the holy names (the highest of all blessings). A force of nearly 100 volunteers arrived early morning, many of whom have been working hard for the last few months to make this gala celebration magnificent! Thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy in the service of Their Lordships.” Ashika, Event Manager

AN OCEAN OF DEVOTION FOR ISKCON-LONDON VOLUNTEERS A feature article by Louise Guthrie, Writer

I

t’s good to be among friends. And, on the evening of Saturday 4th November, everyone present in the beautiful setting of St John’s church, (near Hyde Park, Central London), could, in surveying the sea of serene faces around them, rest assured that they were among kindred spirits. The occasion was this year’s ISKCON-London Annual Volunteers Dinner. Even if some had not actually been together under the same roof until now, (having focused on different volunteering areas, be it using culinary expertise, organisational flair, I.T. skills or perhaps an aptitude for writing), invitees’ commonality lay in the fact that they had all been giving of their time and lending their talents in service of Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara. Attendees were greeted with sacred music (plus tea and delicious snacks). The programme was opened by event MC, Rupa Manohara dasa. He welcomed all and introduced ISKCON-London’s Temple President, Jai Nitai dasa, who led mangala-charana prayers to create an auspicious atmosphere for participants for the hours ahead. The theme of the evening was ‘Ocean of Devotion’. In keeping with this, Syamananda dasa led an interactive ‘ice-breaker’ game in which every second participant was given a model shark’s fin with which they playfully ‘pounced’ on fellow devotees to ask fundamental Krishna-related questions. The fins were passed on (like batons) and the process was repeated in order to get as many people as possible mingling and speaking to each other, before everyone duly settled down again for the next item on the agenda, namely to watch Syamananda dasa perform an engaging solo drama. In an intense, but nevertheless comedic performance, Syamananda dasa - much to the amusement of all - faced, battled, and ultimately overcame those ‘demons’ of the mind, like doubt, fear, paranoia, and ego, that, from time to time, manifest themselves to distract each and every one of us. The evening’s keynote speaker was none other than Shyamasundara dasa, one of Srila Prabhupada’s six original disciples who, in the late 1960s, came over from the United States to establish ISKCON in the UK. Shyamasundara dasa held the audience spell-bound as he talked about the oceans of both

10

peril and devotion that his own guru had navigated. He told how this had inspired him to undertake his own pioneering journey, and read excerpts from his newly published memoirs “Chasing Rhinos with the Swami”: “Swamiji, I have a proposal. Malati and I want to go to London to set up a temple. Mukunda and Yamuna say they will also come….. What do you think?” And so it all began, but while, as they say, ‘the rest is history’, Shyamasundara dasa’s readings tonight left devotees not only wanting to learn in more depth about his close relationship with Srila Prabhupada, but also made them keen to discover the finer details of extraordinary endeavours which ultimately brought about the birth of ISKCON-UK as we know it. Fortunately, copies of this enthralling book were on sale tonight, kindly signed by the author on request. Temple President Jai Nitai dasa once more took the helm to thank volunteers, stressing that, although it was impossible to fully repay everyone for all their effort over the last year, he hoped that today’s event would serve as a sincere token of appreciation. Volunteer Coordinators Dhaval Dattani and Devaki devi dasi also rose to express gratitude for devotees’ hard work over the last twelve months, emphasising how much they looked forward to serving with everyone in the coming year. They also highlighted the sustained commitment of long-term volunteer Charles Renwick by awarding him the annual prize for extended service in recognition of his exceptional dedication. Charles, a sprightly 89year- old, has been helping with food preparations in Govinda’s Restaurant for the past 27 years. “See, I’m not as young as you all thought I was,” Charles quipped, as he graciously accepted his accolade. Finally, Radha Londonisvara dasa and Mandali led an energetic Lila Kirtan that steered the evening towards a festive close, and of course, an eagerly awaited sumptuous Mexican feast that was served to guests in full appreciation of their year’s efforts and received with equal gratitude. We look forward to another year of serving Their Lordships Sri Sri Radha-Londonisvara.

new year’s eve kirtan

A

s a result of suggestions received from community members, Dhaval Dattani organised a New Year’s Eve kirtan evening from 9.00pm to 1.00am for devotees to see in the New Year by chanting and dancing together in front of the Deities. It was also broadcast live on mayapur.tv. This was an indoor counterpart to the usual New Year’s Eve harinama that takes place. The evening began with kirtan led by Sundar Nitai dasa followed by Syamalal dasa and other kirtaneers. Just before midnight, Jagat Pita dasa took over as the kirtan lead. Maha cakes and cookies, made by Vimila devi dasi, were distributed to attendees post-midnight, all leading to an auspicious start to 2018.

“The mood in the Temple Room was like that of Janmastami night” said one devotee who attended.

Volunteers cook feast for sankirtan devotees It has been a tradition at ISKCON-London to treat the sankirtan devotees to an opulent feast on the last day of the Srila Prabhupada December Book Marathon, which is on Christmas Eve. This year’s wonderful feast was cooked by Thiru Dhayalan and Niket Biyani, and assisted by Dhaval Dattani, Charles Renwick and Dinesh Bhai. The feast preparations began at around 2.00pm and the menu included three different varieties of pizzas, spicy chips, chilli paneer, salad, Christmas mince pies and juices. All the sankirtan devotees arrived at the Temple at 7.30pm to honour the feast and share book distribution realisations with each other.

Farewell to Bhakta Harshan Bhakta Harshan, a committed Temple volunteer, returned to Trinidad & Tobago in 2017, after completing his studies in the UK. He actively helped with mailout services such as packing festival invitations, calendars, gifts, maha-prasadam and monthly Back to Godhead magazines. He also helped in various areas such as cleaning, etc. As a farewell, a trip was made to Bhaktivedanta Manor with some other volunteers and he was offered gifts as a token of appreciation for his services.

spiritual mentorship system Mentee Meetings are a focal point of the Spiritual Mentorship System and are conducted twice a month and take place either at the mentor’s home or in the Temple seminar rooms. The format for all the meetings is largely the same i.e. it starts with kirtan, Krishna-katha and discussion, followed by prasadam. However, the delivery of the basic format is unique to each mentor’s nature and presentation style. Mentee Meetings allow the mentees to come together and create a family-like atmosphere where topics are discussed in confidence on wide-ranging aspects of Krishna Consciousness and how to apply this philosophy in day-to-day life. Sometimes mentees present in the meetings and are given feedback from other mentees. This in turn helps to train devotees in preaching and disciplines them in taking time out to study. All mentees submit monthly sadhana charts which are viewed only by their mentors. These charts map out how much reading, hearing and chanting the mentee is doing and helps the mentor steer the mentee towards progressing in their spiritual practices.
