BFA INTERIOR DESIGN, 2022

My name is Isidora Stella Yubelia, born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. Being an active and creative person from a diverse country allows me to socialize and learn new insights from different opportunities. Hardworking, digital-oriented, and good communication skills are some of the qualifications that allow me to work independently and as a team player. am currently a junior designer at Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA International) in Atlanta, a venerable giant ranked number 1 in hospitality sector. Throughout my studies and career, learned how to design for the user experience, as I believe hospitality is not solely about designing unique spaces, but about evoking an intimate connection between the visitors and the surrounding ambience. My BFA studies have allowed me to develop fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical skillsets for a professional work setting.

HelloI am extremely grateful for being a part of an amazing creative community with opportunities to learn new things every day, as I believe the best medium for growth is learning from failure and constructive criticism. In the upcoming ten years, I can see myself developing my interior design firm in Indonesia and helping promote its’ tourism through hospitality. One of my goals is to design unique facilities with creative and innovative solutions in remote areas, where hidden gems are waiting to be unveiled. My vision for design is to deliver meaningful stories that relate back to cultural values, connecting visitors, the built environment, and nature through sustainability and wellness. Design should provide authentic, fun and unforgettable experiences that improves the economic growth, community wellbeing, and future prosperity of all societies.

KAUM CULTURAL COMMUNITY HUB

I am currently working on my capstone project on a cultural community hub located in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is a work in progress based on research, evidence based design, community design, and vernacular architecture.

THE ISSUES

Cultural Center

Community Center

A public building for exhibition or promotion of arts and culture, esp. of a particular region or people (O.E.D)

A building providing social, recreational, and educational facilities for a community (O.E.D)

INTERWEAVE (Concept)

To be interwoven is to be connected and integrated together. The design process for this facility will take a contrasting and complementary approach to promote exciting and intriguing interactions between the locals and the visitors. The semi-open plan establishes unity amongst the diverse users, allowing the spaces to be the “knots” while the users are the “strands”. Users will feel welcomed, intimate, and excited when entering the cultural community hub, and they will leave with joy, pride, and memorable experiences.

Mixed Use (Hospitality and Retail)

East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Individual Project Techniques: Revit, Sketchup, Lumion, Photoshop

As the world is getting increasingly globalized and developed, it occurs that some countries gradually lost their regionalism, which is a cultural loss to the world. New public spaces are built to adapt to the demand for modernization, where the primitive feelings of local identity are fading. Which is why we consider designing a cultural community hub, expected to be the heart for local people in their daily life, aiming to remind local community of who they are, where they come from while introducing their culture to the world.

To be one of the tourist destinations that portrays East Nusa Tenggara and its people representations

PROJECT STATEMENT

SOLUTIONS

To empower local community by providing appropriate space to promote their culture

Unique and welcoming space to attract visitors because adequate or appropiate is not enough

Promote interaction to provide cultural immersion for visitors

PRELIMINARY SPACE PLANNING PROCESS WORK

Provide flexible spaces for performances and workshops to create unforgettable moments

Pioneer facility that serves as a community and cultural hub in East Nusa Tenggara to promote interaction between the local community and visitors. The interweave concept will introduce cultural aspects through the community character and material selection. The semi-open plan establishes unity amongst the diverse users, allowing the spaces to be the “knots” while the users are the “strands.” Neutral colours are derived from the handwoven fabric to blend with the natural tones of the environment, creating a timeless and familiar space for the users. Triangular shapes derived from the Dala Mawarni pattern will be incorporated to define functions, creating a sequence for wayfinding in the dynamic space.

The facility is designed in response to locally available material such as bamboo to promote energy efficiency, sustainability and minimum labour. The pole arrangement represents the verticality from Sikka’s vernacular house while connecting back to the geometry inspired from local Maumere fabric.

The Villea bar emphasized on the Mediterranean flower which is the Bougenvillea and Florida’s local flower, the Orange Blossom to decorate the ceiling as suspended elements. Built-in seatings are located in the middle of the bar, decorated with greenery, with other seating options including high stools on the counter and outdoor seatings. The window acted as a movable partition, so people can have direct access to the patio outside that leads to the beach. Tiles are incorporated as both the flooring and bar shelf wall to mirror the Mediterranean feels.Herbs walls are incorporated on the counter sides, as Six Senses always integrates locally produced ingredients on their offered menus.

DESIGNING FOR WELLNESS

To align with the public spaces, two design theories are incorporated in the guest room design. First, Attention Restoration Theory (ART) asserts that people can concentrate better after spending time in nature, or even looking at scenes of nature. Second, Place Identity is the feeling of a connection that a person has to a place when psychologically invested & essentially becoming part of their self-identity.

Continuing with the Six Senses elements, the guest room design will also promote harmonious design, balance, sustainability, as well as health and wellness. Referring back to the whole concept of harmonious curvilinear element derived from the parti diagram, the pattern can be seen through the space planning as well as continous circulation throughout the space.

The Presidential Suite consists of two bedrooms, one double queen room and one King ADA bedroom, with one shared common space to allow the unit being rented separately.
