! DISINFECTING OF THE RIDING GEAR It is important to follow the regulation regarding the disinfecting of used riding clothes. Riding gear (riding trousers, jackets, gloves, boots, etc.) needs to be washed (40°C) or dry cleaned. Items which can not be washed or dry cleaned (riding boots, riding hats) need to cleaned and disinfected at least five days prior to arriving in Iceland. The Icelandic Veterinary Authority recommends the broad-spectrum disinfectant Virkon S for disinfection. Saddles, bridles, gloves, chaps and other used leather gear may not be brought into the country. Please understand that these precautions are necessary because there are no contagious animal diseases in Iceland. Horses are not vaccinated and are therefore susceptible to infectious agents from abroad. Please help us to protect Iceland’s fragile nature! FIND THE RIGHT TOUR You do not have to be an expert rider to participate in our tours, but some tours are by nature more difficult than others. All Íshestar tours are marked with small horses to indicate the difficulty of each one. Some tours are for riders with little riding experience, others are more difficult and therefore the rating should help to find a suitable tour for everyone. If in doubt call us or send an e-mail.

Beginners Little or no riding experience needed.

TESTIMONIALS from 2014 This has been 6 of the best days of my life. Before you have been on a longer tour in Iceland you have not really been riding. K.M. from Norway Northern Exposure tour

Strong intermediate riders

I had the experience of my life on this tour. I´ve travelled around the world and Iceland and Ishestar topped my whole trips. If I could give it a 100/out of 10, I would.

Comfortable and in control at all paces, firm seat, comfortable in the saddle for up to 7 hrs. per day.

S.S. Australia Snæfellsnes tour

Experienced riders

Everything about this ride will blow you away: Scenery, food, staff, horses, all amazing! If you are undecided just do it – you won´t regret it.

Comfortable and in control at the walk, moderate length trots (tölt) and short canters.

A strong intermediate rider who rides regularly and is capable of handling horses in open country.

If you know how to ride a horse using English riding style you should have no problems riding an Icelandic horse. Western style riders should not experience any difficulties adjusting to the Icelandic way of riding either. Íshestar guides will take some time at the beginning of each tour to explain the correct way to saddle the horse, mount it and how to ride the different gaits. They will carefully explain how and when to ride “tölt”, the special gait of the Icelandic horse.

G.N. from Canada Beach and Mountain Ride Possibly the best holiday I have ever been on! I can´t wait to come back again on another Ishestar tour. Thank you all. G.G from United Kingdom Golden Circle tour Amazing experience. It lived up to all my expectations – beautiful nature, great horses, friendly and helpful staff. M.T. from Denmark Kjölur tour Had a lot of fun on the tour – exciting riding, lovely scenery and friendly staff! C.R. from Scotland Trail of Hope tour Excellent horses, amazing nature! Galloping on the black lava desert on a white horse was unforgettable experience! M.T. from Finland Power of Creation tour.

THE ICELANDIC HORSE

HISTORY The history of the Icelandic Horse can be traced right back to the settlement of the country in the late 9th century. Viking settlers brought with them their best horses, from various origins, though mostly of Germanic descent. The breed has remained pure for over a thousand years and thus today there is only one breed of horse in Iceland – The Icelandic Horse. Today, there are close to 80,000 horses in Iceland which is an incredible number for a nation that counts 330.000 people.

8

The Icelandic Horse is intelligent, good-tempered and versatile. It is the most colourful breed in the world, with over 40 different colours and over 100 variations. Travel on horseback is growing in popularity and Icelandic horsemen are respectful and considerate when it comes to nature, just as they are with their horse. All sorts of competitions are held, emphasizing the different gaits of the horses, from novice fun classes to top class championships.

The Icelandic Horse is unique amongst horse breeds because it masters five gaits; walk, trot, tölt, canter/gallop and flying pace. The breed is best known for its four-beat smooth gait, the “tölt”, which is very comfortable for the rider and elegantly displayed by the horse.

WALK

THE FIVE GAITS

The walk TROT

The walk is a four-beat gait. The horse should be relaxed when walking, moving ahead briskly and putting each foot down independently.

The trot The trot is a two-beat gait where front and hind legs on opposite sides move together. It is important to train it as well as the other gaits.

The canter/gallop is a three-beat gait, ridden at different tempi. A slow canter is comfortable while a fast gallop can liven up the horse and increases its willingness.

CANTER/GALLOP

The canter/gallop

TÖLT

The tölt The tölt is the specialty of the Icelandic Horse. It is a smooth four-beat gait in which the horse’s hind legs move well under the body. The Icelandic Horse can manage this gait naturally and with variations in speed, from a gracious, collected slow tölt up to a very fast and extended tölt. The smoothness of this gait is what makes it so desirable.

The flying pace is a two-beat lateral gait. Not all Icelandic horses can perform the pace, but those that manage all five gaits well are considered the best of the breed.

Wonders of Lake Mývatn and Europe‘s largest waterfall, Dettifoss

Reservation code: IH – 3

This tour was nominated by the Sunday Times as one of the 10 best trails in the world.

The North of Iceland is known for its spectacular natural sights and diverse landscape. Our tour goes from Bjarnastaðir Farm near Húsavík to the Lake Mývatn area, famous for its volcanic features and rich birdlife. Ásbyrgi Canyon, Dettifoss, Europe’s largest waterfall, and the strange rock formations at Hljóðaklettar are just some of the gems of nature we´ll be seeing on this amazing tour.

in a mountain cabin at Theistareykir. Through an area scarred with cracks and fissures from earthquakes and volcanic activity the route takes us to Lake Mývatn where bubbling mud pools and eerie lava formations are a reminder of the powerful energy right beneath our feet. We have the opportunity to bathe in the warm geothermal water of the outdoor pool at the Mývatn Nature Baths.

An optional whale watching tour concludes the selection of natural attractions on and off shore.

The next three days take us through Laxárdalur Valley to Laugar for an overnight stay and relaxation in the swimming pool on site. From there we continue across Reykjaheiði heath towards the coast and back to Bjarnastaðir Farm. The last day we spend in Jökulsárgljúfur National Park and visit both Detti foss Waterfall and Ásbyrgi Canyon.

We ride along soft riding tracks ideal for “tölting”, the unique extra gait of the Icelandic Horse. From rich green pastureland we head towards the Gæsafjöll Mountains and spend a night

Thingvellir Viking Trail National Treasures, Sagas and Wonders of Nature Strong intermediate riders

Duration: 7 days - 6 nights - 5 riding days - 140 km Dates 2015: Sunday - Saturday July 12 - 18 • July 19 - 25 • August 16 - 22 Accommodation: Hotel accommodation in shared rooms in the Capital area. Guesthouse and holiday farm accommodation during the ride with shared facilities. Group size: Max. 14 guests Meeting place: Keflavík International Airport Reservation code: IH – 4

For centuries the Thingvellir area was a central meeting point for those travelling the country on horseback. Important routes to different parts of the country would link up here where the National Park is today, e.g. the trail along Uxahryggir and Kaldidalur to the Borgarfjörður area and Western-Iceland; and the trail passing by Gjábakki going to the East and the rural districts of Southern-Iceland. On Thingvellir plains the Althing or national assembly was established around 930 and continued to convene there until 1798. All major events in Iceland´s history have taken place at this hallowed site.

On this tour we enjoy excellent riding paths in the Thingvellir National Park as well as relaxing and revitalizing ourselves in the geothermal pools of the Fontana Spa. We retrace the footsteps of one of the most notorious Viking warriors, Egill Skallagrímsson, and get to hear some colourful tall tales about this hellraiser. We are introduced to Iceland´s most renowned scholar and saga writer, Snorri Sturluson, who lived at Reykholt in Borgarfjörður. This riding tour is a fabulous combination of great riding trails, wonderful tales of fearful Vikings and the best in relaxation at the Fontana Spa facility.

Reservation code: IH – 5 The Snæfellsjökull National Park is where you find one of Iceland´s most beautiful and emblematic sights - the glacier-covered cone volcano Snæfellsjökull. The mystery and spiritual aura of this still active volcano were made famous through Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Many of the great Sagas are located in this very area. Experiencing “tölt”, the unique extra gait of the Icelandic Horse, is made easy for you on this tour when we follow good riding tracks. The long stretches of smooth sandy beaches make this tour a delight for both horses and riders.

12

This tour takes us through a landscape of extensive lava fields, craters and ash from ancient eruptions in Hítardalur valley. We also enjoy wide-open stretches of light-coloured sand at Löngufjörur beach, where only the tide sets a limit to the freedom of horse and man. The impressive 50-meter deep crater Eldborg is a distinctive landmark, where the light sand turns black once you reach its lava field. On our last riding day we follow the edge of the lava flow along the shore before returning to Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm. Part of this tour can be booked as a 5-day tour/4 riding days – see our tour IH-16.

We visit this historic site where the heart of the nation beats and which became Iceland´s first National Park in 1930. Before heading off into the wilderness of the interior we stop to enjoy the Geysir hot spring area and Gullfoss Waterfall. Travelling from south to north or vice versa right across the

heart of Iceland we find ourselves traversing sandy deserts close to the mighty Langjökull and Hofsjökull Glaciers. Sheltered green valleys come as a surprise in this rugged terrain. At Hveravellir, a geothermal area in the highlands, we can soak in a long hot bath under the Midnight Sun! If you want to see as much as possible of the unspoilt Icelandic highlands, this tour, which has been in operation since 1983, is the perfect choice.

Hrafnkelsdalur valley is the setting for the Saga of Hrafnkel, a finely written Medieval tale of a local chieftain and his fall from grace and his heroic comeback.

The massive Hafrahvammagljúfur Canyon is breathtaking to behold and witness to the power of nature. The ride takes us past Mt. Snæfell – the second highest mountain in Iceland. A vehicle then takes us to Europe´s largest glacier, Vatnajökull Glacier, where we spend some time at the rim of the huge icecap. We experience flocks of wild geese and herds of reindeer roaming free in their natural pastures before following Jökulsá River down through Norðurdalur Valley. We pass a number of fine waterfalls before once again returning to lush green lowland pastures.

About 135 craters erupted on a huge fissure and they covered the area with lava and the whole country with ashes for about two years. Animals succumbed to hunger or volcanic poisoning, a large part of the human population died and only 38.500 people survived the disaster. The Lakagígar craters created an area of dramatic beauty and we are reminded of that almost every day of the ride. Íshestar is proud to present for the first time a regular tour in the very North East of Iceland. This part of Iceland is inhabited by only few people, most of them living in little fishing villages along the coast. There is a lot of diversity in this tour starting with beautiful mountain views from the wide Öxarfjörður Fjord. The Peninsula of Melrakkaslétta, which stretches almost to the Arctic Circle, is a paradise for birdwatchers and people with geological interest. Here we are right on top of the Mid Atlantic Ridge where

the North-American and Eurasian plates drift apart. From mid June to mid July this area is “home” to the Midnight Sun which sends its golden light over the deep fjords of North Iceland. Hosts for this tour are Halldór and Elín with their family from Bjarnastaðir Farm, known to many Icelanders for their excellent breeding of horses. Halldór is a respected member of his community and among other things he is a “mountain king” when the time calls for gathering up the sheep in autumn!

This tour is an ideal opportunity for anyone wanting to enjoy a comfortable ride in a variety of landscapes. As we ride through unspoiled nature our guide introduces us to Iceland´s heroic past with tales of bloody conflict, revenge and love from the ancient Sagas.

We start the ride at Hvammur Farm in Vatnsdalur valley. Sense the adrenaline kick as we ride across the waters of Lake Hóp, driving a herd of free-running horses ahead of us. A visit to a seal colony on the North-Atlantic coast is something you don´t want to miss.

Cantering along seemingly endless sandy stretches with the sea air in one´s face is an exhilarating experience for both rider and mount. There´s plenty of time to try the horse´s unique gait known as “tölt” while enjoying nature and learning something of the rich history of this beautiful and remote area.

Another highlight of this tour is the bus trip back to Reykjavík taking the old highland route of Kjölur. We drive between two glaciers and enjoy bathing in the natural hot pool at Hvera vellir. For the first time we at Íshestar are now offering horse-riding trips during the winter, thus giving clients the opportunity to experience the daily life of the Icelandic horse-riding community during this magical season. Riding out in snow and the rugged winter conditions is a unique experience and completely different to riding in Iceland during the summer. The horses have a winter coat that makes them appear smaller and somewhat square-shaped,

but their willingness, energy and endurance are still the same. On this trip we stay at Miðás, which has excellent facilities, both for men and horses. We´re in the saddle for around 4-5 hours a day, at end of which we soak away our aches and cares in an outdoor hot tub while marvelling at the Northern Lights dancing in the sky above us. Life doesn´t get any better! On our way back to Reykjavik we stop at the spectacular waterfall Gullfoss or the Golden Waterfall, the Geysir hot spring area, Thingvellir National Park and visit the charming Friðheimar greenhouse cultivation centre.

Reservation code: IH – 23 On this special tour we join the farmers in South Iceland as they round up thousands of sheep from the mountains. We gather the sheep into the Rangárvallaafréttur communal sheepfold close to the famous Landmannalaugar geothermal area. The yellow, reddish and greenish hue of the rhyolite mountains give this area a magical touch. Here, under the stately gaze of Mt. Hekla, we drive the sheep across the black sands, which is the ash spewed by this same volcano over centuries. Local farmers have been rounding up sheep in this area for centuries. Learn from them how to manage the flock, drive sheep down hill sides, across rivers and out of sheltered valleys to their resting place for the night, only to head off again the next day to round up more. Being amongst the farming community and lending a helping hand in this age-old tradition of the autumn round-up is as close as you can get to the heart and soul of this nation. As participants you are joining an annual tradition and not a customized riding tour. Therefore an open mind, good physical health and the ability to work as a team is essential. Imagine hundreds of free and spirited horses cantering down from their highland summer pastures to be reclaimed by their owners. Mares and their foals, young horses and geldings traverse the rough terrain, not yet quite willing to surrender their freedom before the onset of winter.

Join the farmers in this great autumn adventure. Ride along when they drive the herd, sort the horses and celebrate the safe return of horses and herders. The varied terrain includes the highland moors, green valleys just putting on their autumn coat of burning red and yellow, deep blue lakes and rivers and Kolugljúfur gorge where a troll woman is reputed to have lived in the old days.

The ancient tradition of rounding up horses is only kept alive in the North of Iceland. A short first ride is already scheduled on the arrival day at our Riding Centre in Hafnarfjörður. This is a good opportunity to get to know the Icelandic Horse and prepare for the adventure ahead. The additional four riding days take place in the North. From the Vatnsdalur area we ride through beautiful valleys and mountains to Laxárdalur valley. Here we team up with the Icelanders and help round up the horses and drive them down from the mountains to Skrapatungurétt communal corral. When this task is complete the locals celebrate with a special round-up dance or “réttardansleikur”. We are of course more than welcome to join in the fun. The round-up continues the next day when the horses get sorted at the corral and we help in returning some of them to their home meadows.

ABOUT ICELAND

The Country

Weather

Iceland is an island of 103.000 km2 (39,756 sq.miles), about one-third larger than Scotland or Ireland. Its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, rises to 2.109 meters (6,921 ft). Over 11% of the country is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe.

Iceland enjoys a much milder climate than its name and location adjacent to the Arctic Circle would imply. A branch of the Gulf Stream flows along the southern and the western coast greatly moderating the climate. In Reykjavík the average temperature in January is 0,1 °C (32°F) and 11,2 °C (52,2°F) in July.

Energy Situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is a hot spot of volcanic and geothermal activity: more than 30 volcanoes have erupted in the past two centuries, and natural hot water supplies much of the population with natural, pollution-free heating. Rivers, too, are harnessed to provide environmentally friendly hydroelectric power.

People Out of a population numbering a little over 300.000, half live in the capital Reykjavík and its neighbouring towns. The highland interior is uninhabited (and uninhabitable), and most centres of population are situated on the coast.

Language Iceland was settled by Nordic people in the 9th century. Icelanders still speak the language of the Vikings, although modern Icelandic has undergone changes of pronunciation and, of course, of vocabulary.

History In 930, the Icelandic settlers founded one of the world´s first national parliaments, Althing. The Old Commonwealth Age, described in the classic Icelandic Sagas, lasted until 1262, when Iceland lost its independence to Norway and later to Denmark. In 1944 Iceland was declared an independent republic.

EAST In East Iceland, the visitor will be astonished by the contrast of the landscape. One finds impressive fjords and high mountains, friendly and peaceful fishing villages; fertile and forested valleys as well as barren highlands and deep canyons.

WEST In the West and the West Fjords, the unspoiled nature attracts visitors. For understandable reasons as well: the high West is untouched and almost uninhabited. The Snæfellsnes peninsula has been named Iceland in Miniature since many natural sights can be found in the area.

NORTH North Iceland, impresses with its flourishing villages and farming communities, soaring mountain peaks, offshore islands. A landscape in formation makes parts of the North a unique world of its own, with craters, lava formations, bubbling mud pools and steam vents.

SOUTH The varied landscape of South Iceland boasts a wealth of natural wonders, glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, geysers and an amazing coast line. Historical sites marking milestones in the history of the country and society are well-marked and accessible.
