This is a year-long project which aims to explore the materiality and architectural potential of chitin, a biopolymer abundant in natural ecosystems. Divided into two phases( this is Program of Architecture) the project involves in-depth research on chitin properties and extraction methods, followed by the development of innovative architectural prototypes integrating chitin-based materials. The project seeks to push the boundaries of sustainable design, fostering collaboration and advancing both scientific understanding and architectural innovation.

Design Concept

The proposed design architecture project aims to create a vibrant community hub in Farrukhnagar that caters to the diverse needs of its residents while fostering a sense of connection to the natural environment. This multifunctional space will encompass workshops, galleries, amphitheaters, areas for women, family gatherings, a local art bazaar, and an educational institute. By seamlessly blending traditional elements with modern design principles, the project seeks to enhance the overall well-being of the community.

Architecture And Domestic Abuse: Dismantling The Relationship Barriers

Aim

This paper aim to provide a framework, design guidelines and provide recommendations to existing laws and policies, which in turn will help in establishing a healing environment for domestic violence survivors.

Objectives

To understand the mental and emotional state of domestic violence survivors and their needs in shelters, focusing on their impact on shelter design.

Explores the relationship between domestic abuse and architecture, identifying triggers and understanding the suitability of shelters for post-traumatic recovery.

Abstract

Domestic violence is a significant issue affecting thousands of women annually, leading to mental health issues such as anxiety, PTSD, depression, and substance abuse. Shelters, which have evolved since the 1970s, provide services to women in crisis, but often neglect those who are no longer in immediate danger or may never seek shelter. Understanding the relationship between architecture and domestic violence is crucial for designing safer and more supportive built environments. This literature review critically examines existing research on how architecture affects domestic violence and the potential for architecture to play a role in prevention and intervention. The study suggests a new design for a domestic violence rehabilitation community, focusing on eliciting emotional responses and restoring dignity through careful use of space, light, and materiality.

Scope & Limitations

The research paper examines the impact of architectural design on domestic violence prevalence and experiences, focusing on spatial configurations, safety features, and emotional well-being. It provides practical insights for architects, designers, and policymakers. However, it faces limitations in obtaining sensitive data, broader applicability, and isolating the exact effect from other.

Way Forward

Architecture plays a crucial role in the long-term recovery of domestic abuse survivors. Architecture has become a weapon within domestic abuse, triggering specific elements that can act as triggers. Careful planning and design can create spaces that prioritize safety and wellbeing. Architects, designers, and policymakers must consider this relationship and create built environments that foster security, empowerment, and positive social dynamics. By understanding the implicit link between architecture and domestic abuse, architects can redesign triggers and implement social support, perceptions of control, positive distraction, and a pacifying material palette.

Architecture should also play an equally considerable role in post-abuse recovery stages. Existing architecture exemplifies empathy, and retrofits to domestic spaces can significantly support mental and physical recovery. Further research is needed to investigate the psychological impacts of architecture and how spatial configuration impacts humans.
