Once there was a girl named Martha Martha was nine years old and loved all types of dolls American dolls, Barbie dolls, baby dolls, any doll you could name

One afternoon, Martha was wandering around her small town on a late October afternoon when she came across a shop with a grand display window. Inside it were dolls in all different types of colourful dresses, with different hairstyles, and unique facial features

She went inside and strolled through the aisles with so many options of dolls, and she wanted them all But then, once she reached the end of the fourth aisle, one in particular caught her eye.

This doll had a black headband, a blue dress with white polka dots, white stockings, and black bar shoes. She had rosy cheeks, pig tails and great big eyes

Martha picked the doll up and brought her to the cashier, where she came across a sweet old lady who had several cat figurines on her desk. The woman was carefully dusting one of the black cats when Martha approached.

“I’ll take this one please,” Martha said

The lady looked at Martha and raised one eye brow. “Are you sure sweetheart? This doll isn’t friendly.”

“Isn't friendly?” Martha asked. “She’s so cute, please let me take care of her.”

The lady sighed “ Alright, you can take her but you must follow one condition ” “Every night, you have to put her in this cage and LOCK it before the clock strikes midnight. If you do it before midnight you will be safe. If you do it afterwards… you’ll see.”

Martha had no fear She was too excited to go home and play with her new doll “Okay! Thank you!” she said, skipping home happily with her new toy in her arms

As evening approached, Martha started to freak out and wondered why the lady had told her that her new doll had to be put in the cage every night. Still, she did what she was told, placing the doll in the cage and locking it tight before going to bed that night.

The next morning, she came downstairs to see that nothing had happened The doll was still inside the cage and in the same place she had put it the day before. That night Martha decided to leave the cage unlocked but still place the doll inside. When the clock struck midnight, the lock was thrown across the living room. Martha stirred, half awake, thinking she heard something, but fell back asleep.

The next morning Martha came downstairs to see that the lock was across the living room The cage door was open. The doll’s head was resting on the living room carpet with its body still inside the cage, and her eyes turned directly toward Martha.

Martha was a little freaked out by this but did not think much of it

She went to school and when she came back, she had completely forgotten about the doll.

That night, she went to bed that night forgetting to lock the cage…

That night as the clock struck midnight, the doll crawled out of the cage, towards the kitchen and found a sharp looking object on the table counter. A great, big, shiny blade.

The doll brought the blade back to its cage and lay there with the cage’s door wide open.

The next morning Martha came down stairs and was confused about how the knife was placed inside with her doll However, Martha was called to breakfast and again forgot about the doll that day

That night, Martha did not bother to close or even lock the cage.

When the clock struck midnight, the doll took the blade and stabbed every person in the house, turning them all into dolls Including Martha

Hours passed, and just before dawn, the dolls walked back to that same little old store hoping to be picked by a little boy or a little girl.

Hoping that they leave the cage a little bit open

ASTUDYINSTRUCTURE

Haiku:

Morning ray of sun; Crinkled sheets fold lazily;

Sunday yawns, at peace

Sonnet:

I have no hunger, yet I gaily eat.

I have no thirst and yet I gaily drink. The pearly clouds above, a saintly fleet;

Young wheat, still green, in which I’ve time to think;

Oasis near and yet I needn’t reach;

Where daffodils do bask in Sun’s galore, And islands flirt near to the clay-soft beach

A lamb trots nobly ‘cross emerald grass floor;

The vast moon rising mothers earth and sky.

A gentle breeze caresses hills and plains alike, Then Dawn shines on all, both man and fly

Morning grins warmly and O so childlike.

For this is not earth of that I am sure,

If this be not heaven, in death, I should be poor

Villanelle:

Green leaves turning, harrowed, they stall

Clock hands stumbling, overwound; Summer’s dying breath, bated, births fall.

A girl, chin skyward, flaunts her gall, Then looks ‘round reticent, alone, unsound; Green leaves turning, harrowed, they stall

Confused and burned, she deigns to bawl, And noiselessly wraps her wound, tightly bound;

Summer’s dying breath, bated, births fall

Allured by bright, billowing Ouranos’ enthrall, She struts as hale, lightning upon the ground; Green leaves turning, harrowed, they stall

With Aphrodite and Hebe, many do brawl; In dusted mirror, no girl could be found; Green leaves turning, harrowed, they stall.

Summer’s dying breath, bated, births fall.

STREETS,HIDDENSTORIES

Secrets of Florence:

Florence is a city of beauty, history, and hidden meaning Yet among its grand monuments lie countless secrets that go unnoticed. “Secrets of Florence” explores the small details and forgotten stories that make the city truly extraordinary.

Known Streets, Hidden Stories:

Piazza Delle Pallottole

In fourteenth-century Florence, “pallottole” was the name for the bowls and ball games played by the Florentines. This game was played by everyone in the streets, piazzas, and on the banks of the Arno Due to the confusion and shouting that erupted during these games, which often ended in brawls, the authorities took it upon themselves to maintain order. To do this, they initially decided on specific areas where it was “prohibited to play ball and pallottole games”, like near churches or other prestigious buildings Later, it was decided to assign a specific area reserved for this game. Still seen to the present day, the Piazza delle Pallottole plaque marks the only area where Florentines were allowed to play this game

Canto di Croce Rossa

The corner between Via dei Cerchi and Via del Corso was called Canto di Croce Rossa, or the Red Cross Song On the city walls, where two red crosses against a white background stand, are the ancient arches (now walled in) marking the edges

of a fourteenth-century loggia that once was the “apothecary’s shop”, or pharmacy, of the city However, the coincidence comes from the fact that the sign of the apothecary was the red cross, similar to our modern day pharmacies. Although they are visually similar, the meaning behind them is different The background has nothing to do with our modern symbolism, but instead, is the sign of the Captain of the People.

“MostbuildingsinFlorence thatinitiallybelongedto thetowncouncil, and later, totheSignoria, have thesecrossesand thereforewereinservice forthegeneralpublic.“

So if you go to the Palazzo Vecchio, right smack in the centre of the entrance door, is a red cross against a white background.

Canto di Croce Rossa

The Marzocco, or Florentine Lion, has always been a lasting symbol of Florence, representing strength, security and majesty. The piazzas and streets are filled with this animal, seen sitting with its right paw raised and holding a white banner with a red lily On Via dei Leoni, behind Palazzo Vecchio, there were once real lions in cages Legend has it that one of the lions managed to escape in broad daylight, walking calmly down the street, as pedestrians scattered in all directions. Before the armed soldiers at Palazzo Signoria could intervene, the lioness stopped in front of a one year old boy, named Orlandino, who unaware of the danger he was in, merely stared at him. The mother, consumed by fear, began to yell, shifting the lion's attention. The lioness then picked the

baby boy up by his collar, carried him over to the mother, and gently placed him in front of her After this Orlandino was considered a hero, received gifts, and was known by citizens as "the miracle child”. This legend brings the profound significance of this street and its name

Via del Parlagio

Via del Parlascio, now Via del Parlagio, takes its name from the amphitheatre, “peralisium”, located on this street However, visible underneath this plaque, is another name, “Via delle Serve Smarrite”, or Via of the Misplaced Servant These “serve smarrite” are unknown, but it is believed they were peasants who had come into the city to find work as servants, and were “smarrite” or displaced, for two reasons They had lost their previous jobs and were forced to look for new ones, and because they were in a new town and in search of somewhere to live. Although it was in the fourteenth-century, it is believed there were some of the first ‘employment agencies’ where these misplaced servants in the streets were taken care of and assisted in finding accommodations.

Via dei

Malcontenti

Very well known streets such as Via Strozzi, Via de’ Pucci, Piazza Peruzzi, and many others, took their names from the families who had built houses there. Others such as Via Calzaioli (cobblers), Via delle Belle Donne (streetwalkers), and Via degli Speziali (apothecaries) were named after the guilds that were carried through the streets. However, “Via dei Malcontenti” has a different meaning, and story, as there was no family that lived there by that name, no guilds with a similar name, or anything unusual about the street itself The name comes from the devastated expression of the condemned who were led down this street to face capital punishment outside of the city walls. They were led through Via dell'Anguillara, over Piazza Santa Croce and down Via San Giuseppe The last stretch of this street from Neri Chapel to the Porta della Giustizia (Door of Justice) was named “Via dei Malcontenti.”

I hope the next time you are walking through the beautiful streets of Florence, you look out for these names and appreciate the hidden stories that line the beautiful city walls of Florence.

DÍADELOSMUERTOS

“Dales,Señor,eldescanso eterno,ybrilleparaél/ella laluzperpetua.”

These words, which translate to, “Grant them, O Lord, eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine upon them,” are often the beginning of a prayer that people say on Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead This prayer captures the meaning of this holiday It's a time for families in Mexico and Latin American countries to honor their loved ones who have passed away. They say that instead of mourning deaths, people should celebrate with love, color, and joy, believing that death is not the end Through music, food, and ofrendas, the living and the dead are reunited for two nights of the year.

A lot of people think that Día de los Muertos is like Mexican Halloween but that couldn't be further from the truth. It is true that they both originate from similar beliefs but in today's modern world they have two different meanings Halloween traditions typically involve having a bonfire and dressing up in costumes while going trick or treating, and decorating your house both outside

and inside with spiders and cotton. None of that is done for Día de los Muertos but we do have many fun traditions

“ThetraditionsofDíade losMuertosarefilledwith colorandmeaning,with eachsymbolrepresenting loveandremembrance.”

The most well known tradition of Día de los Muertos is when families set up ofrendas ( altars ) An ofrenda is where you put pictures of your loved ones on the ofrenda who have passed and decorate it with bright colors, yellow marigold flowers, food, and drinks they liked as well as objects or toys they cherished People put them inside of their house and also on the grave or tombstone their loved one is at. The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate your loved one, so people use this opportunity to ask them for their guidance by appealing to their good nature and making them feel comfortable with things they like. There are candles and homey decorations, to bring light and happiness. The symbol of Día de los Muertos is La Catrina. It is when a lady dresses as a skull with a beautiful headband of flowers called coronas de flores (flower crowns) created by José Guadalupe Posada He wanted to bring elegance and a sense of aristocracy to the celebration. Día de los Muertos has a wide variety of food that is prepared for this specific holiday. The most popular food is sweet bread of the day People usually eat it with milk or hot cocoa Another popular dish is mole. Mole is prepared differently depending on the part of Mexico you're in. In some places it is sweeter, or spicier, or herb-based. It's a dark chocolate-like sauce mixed with different spices and fruits, and is served mixed with chicken One must have item to have on the ofrenda is marigold flowers. These specific flowers give off a

distinctive sweet scent that embraces everyone People usually take the petals off and lay them around the ofrenda as a walkway for their deceased ones to walk.

The holiday that started only in Mexico has grown worldwide and impacted Mexico in the best ways. The Secretariat of Tourism in Mexico estimated that in 2024, Día de los Muertos festivities alone produced more than 18 billion pesos ( around 840 million euros ) in economic impact from hotels, restaurants, tours, and transportation. This large amount of money has helped Mexico with infrastructure upgrades and making the country better This holiday is also now celebrated in many parts of the world The Museum of World Cultures in Barcelona has held an annual Día de los Muertos exhibition and created it with the help of Mexican artists to display ofrendas and objects that represent Día de los Muertos The holiday is also celebrated in places like Japan

Shopping centers in Japan have been seen showcasing ofrendas and exhibits in different places, as well as now teaching the students in Japanese schools the meaning of Día de los Muertos. America is known to have one of the largest numbers of Mexican immigrants soof course Día de los Muertos is celebrated all over the USA. Cities like LA, New York, Chicago, and San Antonio, have some of the biggest festivals celebrating this holiday. These festivals have live performances, costume figures, and prayers

“Quote”

The holiday has become so popular that Disney has even made a movie about it. The animated film Coco ( 2019 ) created by Disney explores the traditions and meaning of Día de los Muertos

The story is about a young boy named Miguel who dreams of becoming a singer His family doesn't approve and thinks he should be a shoemaker just like the rest of his family. His favorite singer is dead, and there is a little place in the city where they keep his guitar One day, he sees a picture on the ofrenda of his family, and the head of his great grandpa is missing but you can see his hand holding a guitar so it leads Miguel to believe that his uncle was a famous singer in the past. During Día de los Muertos he steals the guitar and goes to the Land of the Dead, where he meets all of his relatives who have passed away and tries to meet his great grandfather. This movie was made trying to spread more information and traditions about the Mexican holiday. It takes viewers into what a family really feels like and how it's truly celebrated The song “Recuèrdame” ( Remember Me ) is sung from a deceased person's point of view and tells their family that, although they have died they should always remember and never forget him.

“DíadelosMuertosshows thatloveneverdies, and throughmemory, traditions, andofrendasourlovedones remainforeveraliveinour hearts.”

Many people in the world see death as a negative thing, but if you see people celebrating this holiday, you notice their joy. They're smiling and laughing, and having fun. While it is sad and no one wants to see their loved one gone, you can always celebrate them with Día de los Muertos to help you feel closer to them, as it's a way of having a healthy and intimate relationship with them

AFASHIONWEEKTOBEREMEMBERED

Paris Fashion Week took place in September, and, as always, it brought moments that shook the entire fashion world This season marked a turning point for several major houses, withJonathan Anderson debuting his first collection for Dior, Sarah Burton taking the reins at Givenchy, and Matthieu Blazy presenting his inaugural show for Chanel Together, these debuts signaled a new era in fashion, with many critics calling this year’s edition one of the most exciting and transformative in recent memory.

Beyond the runway, conversations in Paris also centered on the rise of so-called “nepo babies ” One of the most talked-about examples was Matilde Lucidi the daughter of model Bianca Balti who made her runway debut for Dior, sparking discussions about legacy and opportunity in today’s fashion industry

The fashion week started on September 27 and ended October 2 So much happened during this fashion week and expectations were extremely high compared to previous ones. Many fashion houses reinvented themselves, and had to demonstrate to the world that the change was for the better This happened to Dior, whose style was completely reinvented by Jonathan Anderson The collection was presented in one of the most fascinating gardens in all of Paris, le Palais du Tuileries.

Anderson framed the collection within a thematic storyline, beginning with an opening film that projected Dior’s archives against a suspended pyramid and continued through sets inspired by art-gallery still lifes. The collection highlighted his goal not just to revisit Dior’s past, but to reinterpret it for today’s audience Dior's concept changed greatly from that of the previous creative director In fact, Jonathan Anderson minimized the collection by bringing back many iconic pieces from vintage Dior lines.

For instance, the classic Barn jacket was reinvented by the designer, the silhouette was modified into new proportions, and the material was changed to give it a softer fit. Much was said about this collection, since many called it uneven because of the blend of classical and original elements, while others criticized the price range, since a single pair of pants cost up to $3,300. Anderson's debut marked a turning point in fashion, it was a sign that changes can be drastic yet beautiful In this case,

“JonathanAndersonmade Diorfeelasifitwerestepping backintime,butwithan awarenessofthe contemporaryera.”

It was also a debut for Sarah Burton at Givenchy After her years at Alexander McQueen and a break from work, the English designer was ready to shine again on Givenchy's runway. The collection, titled Under Construction, highlighted the roots of the fashion house, also reflected in the choice of the location, as the runway took place on Avenue George V, where the historic ateliers of the fashion house are located.

The collection represented tailoring and elegant silhouettes, a classic choice for Sarah Burton It also explored modern femininity. In a short show, Burton aimed to create a complete wardrobe that fits every occasion for today’s woman. After 26 years at Alexander McQueen, Burton brought aspects of her previous brand into Givenchy, helping it develop from her past experience

This collection highlighted and included floral prints, maxi bows and distinctive cuts, details used on the back of garments and on skirts Although Burton kept the collection generally simple in terms of monogramming, the public particularly adored one piece that incorporated the expanded Givenchy Paris 1952 logo, which ran throughout the collection It appeared on sock boots, bangles, and even on sheer perforated tops, serving as both a signature and a symbol: Sarah Burton’s bold stamp on the dawn of a new Givenchy era.

Chanel still continues to orbit around us, and this year a massive change occurred with Mathew Blazy joining the fashion house His fearless and inventive collection, at times strikingly beautiful and intriguingly bold, was received with unanimous acclaim. Blazy shocked the world with a new collection that was both classical and innovative 19TUSKANTIMES

Tweed, of course, appeared in Chanel, but camellias were no longer a symbol , but felt more like a memory. The silhouettes were elongated, relaxed, and effortless, while the accessories, particularly the irregularly shaped metallic bags, seemed to have been formed in motion, something that the critical eye loved

The collection was presented at the Grand Palais. The show was set beneath a cosmic installation of giant illuminated planets and a mirrored runway, creating an otherworldly atmosphere for the house’s new direction.

"Chanel speaks of love. The birth of modernity in fashion comes from a love story That is what I find most beautiful It has no time or space: it is an idea of freedom Freedom worn and claimed by Gabrielle Chanel," said Blazy about the fashion house and the inspiration.

The designs brought much freshness to the mansion, which in the past years had remained mostly the same. The collection fused Chanel’s iconic tailoring with a seductive modern silhouette.

“Nepo babies” have been slowly rising during Paris fashion week From Bianca Balti’s daughter Matilde Lucidi to David and Victoria Beckam’s son Romeo Beckam,

“Nepobabieshavebeen walkingrunwaysandbringing theirfamilynamesbackto fame.”

Matilde Lucidi had her first debut for Dior this season After appearing alongside her mother at several shows and increasingly showcasing her style on social media, it was only a matter of time before her moment arrived. Her look, youthful, elegant, and floral, with a miniskirt and high-neck blouse, perfectly captured the designer’s vision of a new, more authentic femininity.

She then also walked the runway for Miu Miu, her commitment to pursuing a career in fashion, just like her mom As for the Beckham family, there is always much to say, since talent shines from every side. Romeo, one of four children, also made his debut during Paris Fashion Week, modeling for Balenciaga. Neither of his parents had modelling backgrounds, but his attitude and walk made it seem as though he was made for it, especially after setting aside his football career. Not much has ever been revealed about why he chose to debut as a model, but his clear taste in fashion speaks for itself Could nepo babies be even more revealing than their parents?

“ParisFashionWeek showcasedthebalance betweentraditionand innovation, provingthat fashionremainsbotha reflectionofculturalheritage andastagefornewvoicesto definethefuture.”

Paris Fashion Week 2025 was a clear signal that the fashion industry is in a period of dynamic change. With the debuts of Jonathan Anderson at Dior, Sarah Burton at Givenchy, and Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, major houses demonstrated that reinvention can honor heritage while embracing the contemporary Each designer brought a fresh perspective: Anderson revisited Dior’s archives with modern proportions, Burton explored authentic femininity with elegant tailoring, and Blazy infused Chanel with bold innovation and playful reinterpretations of classic motifs

Beyond the designers, the spotlight on “nepo babies” like Matilde Lucidi and Romeo Beckham reflected the ongoing dialogue around legacy, opportunity, and individuality in fashion Overall, this edition of Paris Fashion Week has showcased the balance between tradition and innovation, proving that fashion remains both a reflection of cultural heritage and a stage for new voices to define the future

CULTURALSIGNIFICANCEANDORIGINOF

ONGOINGFASHIONTRENDSANDPRINTS

The majority of fashion trends prevalent in today’s society have intricate cultural meanings and significance which have been disregarded overtime through popularity spikes within media that fail to mention their origins. Fashion is an art through which individuals are able to express themselves freely without having to verbally communicate it This allows everyone to have a unique style exclusive to them, depending on their interests, culture, traditions and personality. The origin of many prints commonly used within the fashion industry are often overlooked, which dismisses the significance they hold in certain cultures and the original reason they first came about. Recently, embroidery has become an uprising trend, specifically through its presence on jeans and other denim clothing items. The difference between the two and their prevalence/popularity within modern society conveys the ever-changing fashion trends, highlighting the immense impact media has on us concerning personal/individual evolution of interests and fashion tastes. As trends continue to come and go, it’s important to understand the origin behind certain items and understand the significance they had in the past or still have today for specific cultures and traditions; broadening our knowledge about the world around us.

Embroidery is a decorative craft which uses a needle and thread to create intricate designs

“Throughouthistory, embroideryhasbeen viewedasasymbolof wealthandstatus”

The earliest samples of embroidery date back to early modern humans who lived during 30 000 BCE Originally, the technique used for embroidery traces back to ancient China with advanced examples dating between the 3rd and 5th centuries BCE. However, the practice has been discovered in parts of Europe as well, illustrating its significance globally and how embroidery as a practice is not only confined to a certain region Additionally, the practice of embroidery wasn’t originally made for intricate designs or decorative clothing, but rather for mending clothes which over time ancient civilizations discovered the vast decorative possibilities sewing could be used forinitiating the invention and use of embroidery as decoration. Furthermore, it was not solely used for clothing since wealthier, powerful individuals and families also decorated their homes with large embroidered tapestries, linking it to the symbol of wealth and significance. Over time the practice became more popular and in the mid 17th century, the beginning of mass production of embroidery was established through the invention of the first embroidery machine in France It quickly became accessible for everyone as the materials became more affordable and more people began ordering personal embroidered garments, causing the craft to lose its exclusive, affluence status. As technology advanced, the practice of handmade embroidery became lost due to embroiderers in modern society being able to design patterns using intricate computer software and program a machine to make a perfect reproduction on fabric.

Despite its decline in exclusivity, unique embroidery remains a common practice/part of fashion. As previously mentioned, embroidery has recently been represented through lasting fashion trends such as jeans/denim items, further promoting and continuing the practice in today’s society, now more for decorative/aesthetic purposes rather than practicality The craft remains a significant part of textiles and fashion, however, it fails to maintain the uniqueness it once had, losing its symbol of individuality through media influence of conformity to trends

Contrastingly, peacock print is one notable example of a print rarely used in modern fashion, becoming irrelevant to current trends. Throughout history, the peacock has been viewed as a symbol of royalty and status The pattern originates from their tails which convey beauty and confidence, which has developed into a representation of royalty, status, and power in many cultures. Similar to embroidery, peacock print doesn’t originate from solely one culture but rather a combination of many different cultures globally In India, the peacock is known for their eye-like feathers, specifically evident in the famed Peacock Throne which was built in the early 17th century featuring two peacock sculptures encrusted with gold and jewels, further illustrating its symbol of royalty and status.

“WithinGreekmythology, thepeacockwasknownto beasacredbirdtoHera

She originally became intrigued by the peacock due to the pattern of ‘eyes’ on its tails as she wanted to have a commemoration for her servant Argus who she hired to guard Zeus and his many mistresses; therefore, the eye-like pattern intrigued her as she saw them as a symbol of vigilance. It soon developed a significance to Hera who chose peacocks to pull her chariot. Finally, in Chinese mythology, the peacock’s tail colors and eye-like pattern represented fame and good luck as the animal was believed to increase one’s protection and awareness. Throughout these different cultures, the peacock all had different meanings and significance, however one aspect common within all its origins is its eye-like pattern The tail of the peacock intrigued individuals, developing its notable symbol through its unique beauty. Over time, its eye-catching appearance became associated with monarchs as confidence, power, and royalty were all aspects that monarchs through history wanted to be represented by The peacock’s symbols remain true even within today’s society, though its print/pattern isn’t commonly used within fashion as it is very bold and specific while trending prints today require versatility and the ability to be reused

Through the history and symbolism of embroidery and peacock print, it is evident that the origins of many notable and less commonly implemented trends/prints date back to multiple cultures, regions, and civilizations, illustrating the significance they originally vs their presence today. Understanding the significance and symbolism of these items and the purposes they were once used for allows individuals to develop social awareness through recognition of their origins and role within specific cultures and traditions.

FORMULA1ACADEMY:AWOMANRACING INMOTORSPORTS?

We've all heard of Formula 1 – the pinnacle of motorsport. Twenty drivers from ten different teams racing in circuits across the globe Since its official start in 1950, Formula 1 has grown into the most popular and exciting racing series in the world. It is known for fast cars, skilled drivers, and races watched by millions. Yet, looking back at the history of the sport, we see that there have only been 5 female drivers, with the last one having raced in 1975 Now, Formula 1 is taking a big step to help new female talent rise up as drivers with a new series called the Formula 1 Academy. But what exactly is the Formula 1 Academy, and why is it so important for the future of racing?

"Now,Formula1istaking

abigsteptohelpnew femaletalentriseupas driverswithanewseries

calledtheFormula1 Academy."

In recent years the participation of women in motorsport beyond the driver’s seat has grown considerably. Women are increasingly found in roles such as engineers, mechanics and technical specialists. Notably in 2025 the first female race engineer was appointed The female portion of the motorsport fanbase has also grown significantly, constituting about 17% in 2017 and rising to 40% in 2025.Women are increasingly part of this world, just not as drivers. The F1 Academy initiative hopes to change that.

Formula 1 Academy is a subdivision of Formula 1, created as an all-girls junior racing series to develop female racecar drivers The F1 Academy was founded in 2022 by the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) and Formula 1, with the help of Susie Wolff, the managing director.

F1 Academy and increased female participation are critical because according to Hintsa, the world’s leading coaching company, women face the same physical and psychological demands in racing as men, and with adequate training there are no gender-based barriers stopping women from reaching elite levels This means that when women have equal opportunities to enter and develop in motorsport - through funded seats, targeted coaching and consistent racing experience - the talent pool expands and the genuine competition increases.

The main reason that women don’t have the same probability to secure a racing seat as men is due to a combination of prejudice and lack of funding.

Alison Donnelly, former CEO of female driver development program MoreThanEqual, says that if you have a male and female driver who are equally skilled, the male is more likely to get funded because what “[women drivers] are saying is: 'Nobody will back us, it's just too much of a risk and it's a lot of money ”

"Thetalentpoolexpands andthegenuine competitionincreases."

The Formula 1 Academy has implemented a pioneering sponsorship model that sets it apart from traditional motorsport series. Unlike Formula 1, where each driver and team has many sponsors that they can choose to bring to the sport. F1 Academy has taken a different approach, where each Formula 1 team has to support at least one F1 Academy driver, creating a direct pipeline between the development series and the pinnacle of motorsport. This direct sponsorship helps drivers secure funding from official permanent sources When a driver doesn’t have a team sponsoring them they can choose to have a brand sponsor them (Chloe Chong and Charlotte Tilbury, Alba Larsen and Tommy Hilfiger). This model is not only useful for drivers and teams, but also attracts brands that want to invest in gender equality initiatives

But, what about the racing part? How does an F1 Academy weekend work?

Each driver has two years to showcase their talent to different teams and sponsors within the motorsport industry. Some say this is too little time, but the point of the F1 Academy is to develop hundreds of female drivers and open different paths, not give them a permanent seat

There are six different teams with three drivers each. The weekend includes one free practice session, one qualifying session, and two races. The yearly championship is made up of 7 rounds Individual drivers and teams are ranked in a yearly championship. The championship winner does not receive direct prize money, but instead the main prize for the champion is a fully funded seat in a higher-level racing series for the following year So, F1 Academy continues to support drivers even after they leave

Elected on June 13, 2024, Ilaria Bugetti’s tenure as mayor was one for the history books when she became the first female mayor the province of Prato has ever seen. Unfortunately for her and her family, this accomplishment was quickly overshadowed by another record, that being the shortest term in Prato’s history for a mayor

Our story starts in 2024, during a meeting between the centre left parties of Italy. Their discussions were myriad, though our spotlight fell upon the dispute of who would be crowned their official candidate for the 2024 mayoral elections in Prato The key performers conducting recitals were the Partito Democratico, featuring intriguing figures in Italian politics such as the swiss-american Elly Schlein and the Movimento Cinque Stelle with leading man and ex-prime minister, Giuseppe Conte Following their deliberations, a decision was made.

An email the following day brought Ilaria Bugetti the promotion of a lifetime: her only previous mayoral experience being mayor of Cantagallo, a municipality with barely 3000 people. Now she was being nominated as the official mayoral candidate for the centre left coalition in Prato, a province with nearly 200 000 inhabitants One can only imagine her ecstasy when the ballot results were published and she walked away with 52.22% of the votes.

Unfortunately, all happy endings must eventually come to an end, although this one was indeed very short-lived Thus, it is with great displeasure that we must now discuss the downfall.

Every “alleged” corruption case must have an “alleged” corruptor, and the special guest fulfilling that role in this case is Riccardo Matteini Bresci Mr Bresci, here, is an entrepreneur known for having bribed the provincial commander of the Carabinieri, Sergio Turini in 2024 (not a good look if you’re attempting to fight similar allegations). However, it is not determined that men cannot grow and change

As Ilaria Bugetti entered office, the first few weeks passed with an air of tranquility. However, almost immediately, suspicions of collusion with Mr. Bresci would pop up, though they would be quickly dismissed These qualms would not be without effect, as the Public Prosecutor’s office would soon stick their noses into this story.

The cards were dealt and the game was to be played Initial allegations were met with adamant denial, as Bugetti insisted she had been nothing but cautious and cold in her interactions with Mr. Bresci. House arrest was on the table as Bugetti’s career rested in the hands of the prosecutors Despite facing heavy opposition, Bugetti would repeatedly vouch for her own innocence. This was when the prosecutors finally revealed their cards. A plethora of evidence was brought onto the table: several phone calls from recent months between the two individuals, featuring one especially incriminating call where the briber, Mr Bresci told his lawyer that they went to his home for dinner and had a very interesting meeting. However, despite new surges of evidence, the charges were eventually dropped Ultimately, Bugetti chose to fold and resign on her own terms rather than await a municipal decision. On July 11, 2025, she would ultimately hand in her letter of resignation, remaining adamant about the fact that her alleged crimes were still only allegations She would affirm that this resignation was out of love and respect for the province of Prato, stating that she was convinced of her innocence despite how this resignation would make it seem.

What does this mean for us? Most importantly, with the regional elections for Tuscany having taken place in the past 2 weeks, the administration failed to prepare for local elections to be held in conjunction, leading Prato being forced to remain without an official mayor until spring of 2026 This is obviously detrimental to the city’s ecosystem, as administrative functions are currently heavily inhibited. Currently, the district commissioner, Claudio Sammartino, is taking over until a new mayor can be elected

NOKINGSPROTEST

Who would’ve thought that nearly 250 years after Thomas Paine published his paper, ‘Common Sense’, launching a devastating attack on the idea of a monarch ruling America, the American people would once again find themselves taking to the streets to protest the dangers of all-powerful leaders, also known as“elected dictators”

Over the course of 2025, The United States have had a series of peaceful protests known as the No Kings Protests where millions gathered from all across the country in big cities like New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and Miami to protest against new policies introduced by President Donald Trump and his administration.

No Kings” is a movement started by progressive activist groups against the authoritarian policies of Donald Trump and his administration Historically speaking, the name, “No Kings”, originates from America's opposition to the oppressive rules of the British monarch at the time, King George III.

Protesters held up signs with various slogans such as: “Save social security”, “Democracy not Monarchy,” and “The Constitution is not optional.” In New York, protesters filled up Times Square, chanting, “Democracy for all, no kings, no fear”

Their loud voices showed how strongly the people felt about the recently implemented policies regarding immigration, the economy of the country, and human rights - all of which have sparked controversy, making many fearful of what the future may hold for the nation.

Among these issues was a new travel and immigration ban which restricts entry from predominantly Muslim and African nations, such as Libya and Chad. Protesters called out this new ban, questioning its morality and equality, both of which are qualities protected under the Constitution's 14th amendment

Among the many protesters interviewed, Massimo Mascoli, a 68 year old Italian-American, who grew up in Italy and is now a resident of New Jersey, said that he was protesting because he’s particularly concerned about America's cutdown on immigrants as well as the millions of Americans being denied crucial healthcare. "We cannot count on the Supreme Court, we cannot count on the government," he told the BBC

In addition to this, he expressed his fear that the US government was following the same path as his former country under the ruling of Mussolini, a fascist Italian dictator

“We’re in the process of a fight to save our democracy,” said Chris Murphy, a senator for Connecticut who was one of the 200,000 who attended the rally in Washington DC.

“California also had its fair share of protesters, in big cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco Protestors marched the streets whilst waving flags and symbols opposing the Trump administration's policies regarding immigration, healthcare and civil rights, all of which many feel threaten democracy and equality in the United States

People have to get way out of their comfort zones,” remarked Taylor G, a Californian protester, suggesting that for changes to occur people need to learn to stand up for what's right and take a stance against the injustice, even if it makes them feel uncomfortable at first. “Even though we might not agree on everything, we could agree that what’s going on in the country is not good,” he added

In the weeks following the No Kings protests, signs began appearing that Donald Trump's support was weakening, since winning the election in early November of 2024 A recent poll, carried out by Marquette Law school, showed that Donald Trump's approval rating is at 45% and disapproval rating is now at 55%. These figures suggest a decline in support, especially considering how popular Donald Trump and his administration were in the end of 2024 and early 2025 According to a survey conducted by Public Religion Research Institute and Brookings, 62% of Americans say that the country is going in the wrong direction.

Nearly two and a half centuries later, the American people are still debating what modern leadership and freedom should look like. Whether it becomes an impactful movement or fades with time as political tension shifts, the protesters have already left their mark, reminding many of the frail imbalance between leadership and liberty For millions of Americans the message of No Kings protests is simple; No leader, however dominant, stands above democracy.

For some context, in December of 2021, there was a luxury superyacht by the name of My Phi (‘the Phi’) that was parked along in South Dock/Canary Wharf in London The official legal owner of the Phi was Dalston Projects Ltd (a company incorporated in St Kitts and Nevis company, who is responsible for international business activities, protection of assets, as well as tax optimization), and the yacht's ultimate beneficial owner is Sergei Georgievich Naumenko, who is a Russian citizen and resident On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, and the UK government, by way of the Secretary of State for Transport (SST), detained the luxury motor yacht under the Russia (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019, the “Regs ” A sanctioned country is a nation that has been subjected to political, economic, or diplomatic restrictions by other nations or international bodies. Furthermore, the SST released a Direction, which is a protocol to rules of civil and criminal procedure in the court, on March 28th of 2022, and it reinforced that the superyacht was to remain at the South Dock in London. Something important to note is that Naumenko was not enlisted on the sanctions list in the UK, however, the regulations admitted provisions, which called for the detention of vessels owned or controlled by any persons “connected with Russia.”

The legal challenge regarding this case is the fact that Dalston Projects and Naumenko sued the UK government under the claim that detention of the Phi was unlawful.

They had three different points that they focused their attention on. Firstly, Dalston and Naumenko claimed that the custody of their yacht was not related to the enforcement of sanctions, instead arguing that it was a publicity stunt that was used to display Britain’s ‘tough’ stance against Russia.

Secondly, they stated that the detention was a violation of their rights to a peaceful enjoyment of property under the Article 1 of Protocol 1 within the European Convention on Human Rights (A1P1).

Finally, they claimed that even if even under the circumstances that the sanctions were legal in theory, the government’s actions were unreasonable considering that Naumenko was not personally sanctioned and that the yacht itself did not pose any threat.

The court, obtained from the High Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, all favoured the government’s accord. The judges understood that the detainment of the Phi did intrude with property rights, nevertheless, they found that the intervention was proportionate and legally justified within the sanctions regime

Within their reasoning, the court established the broad allowed to the executive within the matters of international policy and sanctions. For example, the judgement stated that, “The very considered income that Mr. Naumenko claims that he could earn by chattering out the Phi is likely to make its way to Russia In this way it would be used to contribute to the Russian economy.”

Additionally, the Supreme Court recognized that a few of the minister’s publicized commentaries, such as calling the Phi “a trophy of the friends of Putin,” were rather politically unwise However, they did not interfere with the lawfulness of the ruling itself. The seizure of the yacht was determined to be a legitimate part of the UK’s more general sanctions effort, with the goal of discouraging wealth connected to Russia

At the center of this case, there was a typical legal predicament: how to create a balance between individual property rights and the national interests The judges enacted a regulatory proportionality test. This inquired about whether the actions made by the government had a legitimate goal, was reasonably joined with the goal, and considered whether or not less invasive actions could have been taken to achieve the same outcome They ruled, considering the urgency and symbolism of the post-invasion sanctions, that the balance was in the government’s favor.

"Whennationalsecurityor foreignpolicyisbeing threatened, thecourtshavea tendencytogivethe governmentsalargemargin ofdiscretion."

Their reasoning in this case reveals a consistent pattern within modern law: when national security or foreign policy is being threatened, the courts have a tendency to give the governments a large margin of discretion.

This case in particular goes far beyond just one luxury yacht It shows us that the sanctions regime within the UK can amount to indirect ownership and control, even under the circumstances that the person is not named individually.

Also, the rights to property remain under the protections of human rights law, but have the power to be overridden when proportional to legitimate (to determine this Parliament first has to decide whether it’s the law and the courts later determine if government actions were unlawful) national interests Moreover, the judicial review of these sanctions decisions have a cap, the courts must secure legality and rationality, however they rarely second-guess the government strategy.

For lawyers, compliance officers, and business owners, this particular case is an indirect warning that any assets linked in any way to a sanctioned country have the possibility of facing restrictions. In regards to students of politics and law, it is an indication that these modern conflicts are not only fought with arms as well as financial tools, regulations, and judgements of the courts.

As of today, the Phi represents more than an abandoned yacht, but rather a figure of the new capacity of international sanctions and the altering borders between personal wealth and public liability.

As the Supreme Court made clear, in the current times of geopolitical crises, there can be a fine line between both private property and public policy, as can be seen in the reflection of a luxury yacht parked on the water of the South Dock.

(Burton)

‘The Poppy War’ tells the story of Fang Runin, known as Rin, who is a war orphan in the Nikan Empire, who works for her foster parents in the opium smuggling business. To escape an arranged marriage, Rin secretly studied for a national test that would grant her the opportunity to leave her small village and move to Sinegard, the capital and home of the world renown military academy After scoring first in her province, Rin makes the journey north where at first she finds school difficult, to say the least. Bullied for being a poor southerner, Rin pushes through and excels in her studies, making a few close friends and some dangerous enemies. Under the guidance of an odd professor, Rin grows to accept herself and her talent for shamanism via mediation and the use of psychedelic drugs (opium seeds), eventually winning the first year tournament despite being the obvious underdog In her third year, the Mugen Federation (territorial enemies with the Nikan Empire) invades Nikan again, and the students at the military academy are forced to fight for their country While defending the capital, Rin discovers that she is a Speerly - an extinct group of people from the island of Speer, which was massacred by the Mugen Federation in a previous war. The Speerly soldiers wielded shamanic fire powers from their God, the Phoenix, and Rin has the ability to access the Phoenix too With this discovery, she is selected to join the Cike, a group of misfits made up of young, shamanic, imperial assassins led by Altan, one of the older students at the academy that Rin looked up to during her time there While in the Cike, Rin learns new things about herself and her powers as she fights for her country and tries to end the war.

I really enjoyed reading this novel, especially considering that by starting DP1 in the IB I have been struggling to find reading time. I was engaged the entire time and found the characters to be extremely compelling, especially the female lead Rin is such a strong person, who literally dripped burning wax on her arms to stay awake and study and made herself infertile to avoid getting her period to be able to train consistently. She is so stubborn and while she sometimes makes decisions that the reader doesn’t agree with, her spirit is inspiring Especially due to the fact that Rin is the underdog of the school, she quickly gets the reader to be on her side. In addition to Rin being so compelling, there are so many interesting supporting characters, including Rin’s teacher, Jiang, who is the Lore master and Rin’s main mentor He is unforgivingly unique and many believe he is simply crazy. Another interesting storyline includes the dynamic between Rin and Nezha as they go from mortal enemies in the academy to then allies once the war initially begins Now, unfortunately for me, there was no romantic subplot which proved to be refreshing on the one hand as oftentimes the power of strong female leads becomes minimized when a man is included, but on the other, a bit disappointing as I love a good love story

Overall, I really enjoyed Kuang’s writing style so I am planning on reading more of her work! I would highly recommend ‘The Poppy War’ to anyone and everyone interested in fantasy with a bit of historical fiction, especially for those who enjoy a good underdog story.

BEATTHEBEAUTYSTANDARDS

Life and the world annoy me in many ways, but the one that annoys me the most is female beauty standards You're telling me that you have the audacity to come up to a girl to say she's fat, or ugly, or too skinny, without even imagining how she feels? Who do you think you are? You came from a woman, and you are so self centered that you can march up to a girl and say she's ugly. Or you can go up to a woman and out of nowhere hit on her? We are not just your little dolls We have feelings just like you A lot of us are too scared to show that we care, but all of us do. Some can fight it and get over it faster, yes, but it all hurts. Here's an example you should think about before you speak.

A girl is born, right? Soon she goes to school for the first time And there's a lot that comes with school Boys, girls, friends, enemies, people you never talk to, teachers, crushes, and unfortunately…

Bullies

Mean kids.

Then this girl will hear those words for the first time

You're ugly.

Little does that girl know, but that's the first of hundreds of times she’ll hear those painful words That's one of the first times that little girl will feel pain. She’ll cry a bit. Then a lot. Then, she’ll get her pillow drenched with her own tears. She’ll grow up. Now she's about ten years old. She’ll get called fat by her crush, or just some other boy It won't matter She sheds a tear, then she will run She‘ll run to her friend that has been there every time since she was young They’ll go out and get ice cream to feel better But for the first time she gets a small cone, because she noticed she was actually fat. Now she is twelve. Older. She is in seventh grade. It's the hardest it's ever been yet. Someone called her fat again, and that friend from when she was ten laughs right along with them She has a new friend now Her old one made fun of her so they can't hang out anymore She goes out for ice cream again But this time she doesn't get any, because the boy called her fat. She starts to starve herself, starts working out, tries everything she can to get skinny, because it's not ok to be fat.

Finally, she's skinny. Then someone else says "you're such a stick!” She wants to cry, but she is now 13 and has learned how to contain it. No one has seen her cry in about two years. Not even her parents and closest friends

Soon she gains a bit of weight Now she knows: she has the perfect body No one picks on her about her weight, now just her “ugly face”. She experiments with makeup for the first time. Now at fourteen, someone in her class tells her: “oh my god, why do you wear so much makeup? That makes you uglier ” but she just smiles and pretends she cannot hear the sound of her heart shattering like glass. She wears less makeup, but still enough to cover her face, which so many people have called ugly over the years She doesn't get picked on After all these years Now she is perfect And yet she still thinks everyone is waiting for her to make any mistake, anything to cause her more pain.

After all this time, what has she achieved?

Is she pretty now?

Or is she what other people want her to be?

Women go through so much pain in their lives, and some people never notice that. Look around at the girls in your life. Ask if they are okay, and do they need a hug? Remember it's not just women and girls, everyone can use some love Look after other people in your life, and please even if it's just the smallest thing, like “I like your shoes!” or “cool hair!” try to give compliments. Why? Because in life, you want to be the person who lifts someone up, not puts them down.

ARTWORK

OURSAVIOR

It was a sunny day in the Polish countryside, unusual for September weather I was sitting on the couch with my brother Wojtek who was listening to the radio, half paying attention, as my mind was a scattered deck of cards My mother interrupted my thoughts, “The radio just reported an attack not far from Morskie Oko. The Nazi’s are getting closer…”

“But I thought that we were safe. I thought that they wouldn't come here?” I muttered, suddenly snapping back into reality It had been just four days since the Nazi’s invaded Poland, but they already seemed to be expanding My brother started biting his nails, and my mother developed a nervous look on her face

“What if they do come here? What if they kill us all?!”

My brain was filled with concerns, my mind racing. My train of thought abruptly came to a halt when my father burst into the room “Everybody into the basement Now!”

I could tell by his panicked expression that we were in danger “Boom!” Gunshot The smell of burnt gunpowder quickly filled the room.

A vase sitting on the window-side fell and shattered into a million pieces. “Crack!” As I looked through the window I caught a glimpse of a tall, frightening soldier with a large gun entering our neighbors house “Oh no!” I cried. “We’re next !”

“BOOM!” An even louder gunshot rang in my ears. Now my parents couldn't hide their terror. We ran into the basement locking the door Even then I could hear our once peaceful village being bombarded with gunshots I was absolutely petrified But nothing could have prepared me for what happened next “Thump. Thump” He was coming down the stairs! My heart was pounding rapidly, almost as if it were about to explode. I was horrified when he broke down the door. Silent tears poured down my cheeks. I knew this was the end

“Get up ”’ The soldier said “Get up before the others get here ” I stayed on the floor bathing in my pool of tears. Unexpectedly, I felt someone lift me off the ground, finding myself face to face with the soldier, holding the door open for me. My family was on the other side waiting for me with reassuring smiles. At that moment I knew that we were going to be okay The soldier let us out through the back door of the house We then followed him into the woods, praying for safety and a good ending. I felt a little bit skeptical but had a deep feeling of trust in my now steady heart. After walking through the forest for a good half hour we reached a little cottage

“This is a safe house There is food to last you more than a month as well as water and other necessities When everything calms down you can return to your home. You must not tell anyone about what has happened today. I have to leave you now.”

I had never felt that grateful before in my life I will forever be filled with gratitude for that soldier; our savior I looked at my parents, my brother all looked so relieved and genuinely shocked about what had happened All that because of one kind soul, I survived World War II.
