Dear ISF Alumni Community
It is with great excitement and immense pride that we present to you the very first edition of the ISF Alumni Magazine—a publication dedicated to you, our inspiring alumni, who continue to shape the world in remarkable ways.
This magazine is more than just pages and pictures—it is a celebration of our shared history, our global journeys, and the extraordinary milestones that each of you has reached since your time at ISF. Whether you’re changing lives in your community, advancing in your career, exploring new paths, or starting families of your own, your story is part of the rich tapestry that makes ISF what it is today.
The purpose of this magazine is to reconnect us all—to share experiences, reflect on life since ISF, and rediscover the friendships and memories that made your school days so special. It’s a chance to reminisce, to laugh, to feel proud, and above all, to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our ever-growing alumni network.
As you flip through these pages, we hope you feel a sense of belonging, of pride, and of connection to your Parioli International Day School, St. Michael’s Country Day School, The American School of Florence (ASF), American International School of Florence (AISF), or International School of Florence (ISF) roots.
This is your community—past, present, and future—and we are thrilled to walk beside you as we continue to grow and celebrate together.
Welcome home.

FROM OLIVE TREES TO GLOBAL CITIZENS
In 2018, I moved my family from Los Angeles back to Florence so that my children could attend ISF—the same school that shaped my own formative years, gave me lifelong friends, and prepared me for everything that followed. It wasn’t just a move. It was a return to something that had given me so much and that I felt compelled to pass on.
I often share those early memories with my children: the first Paris trip with Madame Farson, away matches with Mr. Cook, training on our uneven, always muddy field, the laughter on long bus rides, and the pride of wearing our blue T-shirts at tournaments— because we didn’t yet have uniforms. We were a small school. The soccer team was also the volleyball team. There was no
mensa, the water was cold, and the heating at Villa le Tavernule left much to be desired. Our graduating class had just 11 students. Around that time, ISF became one of the early adopters of the IB program—a curriculum that aligned beautifully with the Renaissance values of our extended campus and whose emphasis on critical thinking, global citizenship, and a multidisciplinary approach continues to define the school today.
Despite the limitations, we were guided by caring and dedicated teachers, we felt part of a close international community, and we had fun. We genuinely loved coming to school.
ISF has grown tremendously since then. Today, it serves over 500 students from more

than 40 nationalities across two campuses, offering a truly world-class program. IB scores consistently exceed global averages, and Italian students achieve strong results in terza media and quinta elementare exams. Among the school’s many rich offerings, just to mention a few, students organize and host FloMUN, a Model United Nations conference that welcomes more than 220 participants from around the world; they take part in outdoor challenges through the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award; perform with the Cantabile choir in some of Europe’s most renowned theaters and churches; compete in LEGO Robotics tournaments; and represent ISF in numerous sports events across Europe.
ISF continues to be home to students from around the world, learning in a setting that is truly internationally minded and uniquely Florentine—not just in name, but in lived experience. The school is more expansive and inclusive than ever, yet its essence remains: a community that prepares students not only for university, but for any opportunity with confidence, empathy, and curiosity.
But none of this happens by chance.
Delivering a meaningful education, one that is academically rigorous, emotionally supportive, and aligned with the highest global standards, requires more than tuition alone. It takes committed educators, strong leadership, rich programming, and a community willing to invest in something greater than itself.
ISF is a journey. It’s important to look back and appreciate how far we’ve come, but also to reflect with realism and purpose on the years ahead. Sustaining and strengthening this community requires more than admiration. It requires involvement.
As alumni, we are part of this story and a vital part of its future. Whether through the Development Fund, scholarship support, mentoring, offering expertise, or simply staying connected, engagement matters. It is essential to the school’s continued growth.
Serving as Board Chair has deepened my appreciation for what it takes to keep ISF thriving. Supporting and giving back aren’t automatic. They are learned, modeled, and intentional acts passed on from one generation to the next. And as beneficiaries of such a rich experience, we now have the opportunity to be stewards and role models for those who come next.
Whether you remember the warmth of the community during cold winters at Villa le Tavernule or joined the ISF family more recently, you are part of what keeps ISF vibrant, independent, and uniquely itself — and part of what will help carry it forward.
With gratitude, Morgan Fiumi, Chairman of the Board International School of Florence Class of ’91

SARA GUALANDI
Class of 2009
Director in technology as a woman by 32 (an environment of only 15 to 30% of women), international work experience, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, and two children! Currently Global tech marketing & innovation Director at Sephora - Paris, France. For me what remains most remarkable was the approachability of teachers, whilst remaining in charge, to also be kind and intuitive and available in many different ways. Miss Benedetti in a caring but professional way, you could tell how much she cared when she broke her leg and couldn’t move and had all of us come to her home to do our oral exams. Or Mr Blackstone giving up all that time for MUN lively and positive as always, I could mention many teachers but that is what made the difference for me. Definitely relationships! As mentioned in my memories , those are what gave me confidence to be who I am! Married with two kids.
NOA CORCORAN-TADD
Class of 2005
PhD in Anthropology, Harvard University. Currently Librarian, Dumbarton Oaks Research Library, Washington DC, USA. While it’s easy to wax nostalgic, I really do look on my time with quite a few ISF teachers as deeply formative. I’ll inevitably miss some out but I would certainly highlight climate change and Chomsky with Debra Williams, Beowulf and Angie’s Pub and Private Lives with John Pitonzo, Fellini with Nicole Merlini, Marx and Hobsbawm with Johan Semaan, the Biennale and printmaking with Heather McReynolds, Mingus with Ivankovic, Fiesole and Orsanmichele with Petrucione, and navigating the invasion of Iraq live in St Petersburg with Blackstone. And given my current position, I can’t fail to call out what was, in retrospect, an excellent school library, a place to escape from PE in order to read Le Guin, Asimov, la Repubblica, and the International Herald Tribune!
COSIMO CECCHI
Class of 1987
Right after graduation I worked as a Gofor a few years and after that I started to work as Sales Manager in Traffic safety for over 25 years. In the last 8 years I’ve been working in Professional audio! To give you an example I followed part of the Sphere project in Las Vegas. In particular I supported the team on identifying the correct partners for the haptic experience. Currently working as Europe Sales Manager @ Powersoft S.p.A. Many years have gone by, it is difficult to choose a specific one! In any case I believe the strength of the friendships I made at school are one of the many treasures I got from ISF. Got married in 1999, had a beautiful daughter in 2005, unfortunately my wife passed away 3 years ago! Lost a couple of friends that graduated with me (Kai Portman and Clemente Ferrero de Degubernatis) they will always be in my heart!

Fondest Memories: Performing in Shakespeare plays directed by Mrs. Farson, Sergio’s wonderful lunches, Roman history field trip with Mr. Gibson, learning to play soccer with Ms. Nichter, deep discussions about literature with Mr. Petruccione, joking, socializing and singing rock tunes with my irreverent and amusing classmates on the terrace overlooking Florence. The overarching value at St. Michael’s when I was there was kindness.

Special memories: I remember trying to find the turtle in the garden and being thrilled when I found him/her. I remember how happy we were when we would get a ride from the bottom of the hill up to the school from other parents, instead of having to walk! I remember making simple lino cuts in art class :) Personal milestones: Finished a Masters of Animation at AKV St Joost in Breda, the Netherlands, and got my permanent residence card here a few years ago.

The most transformative year of my life was my year at the International School of Florence
Soccer coach for over 40 years; served as an athletic administrator at the secondary and college level. Also served on two different occasions as a parks and rec director. Currently Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. With the assistance of Carmen Macchia, our gym teacher...we were able to introduce the first basketball and soccer teams to ASF. I have four wonderful children, ages 29, 28, 24, and 17. I will celebrate my 20th wedding anniversary this summer with my second wife.
Currently Head of Research, Executive Recruiting, New York, NY. Fond memory of AISF - Sleepover at via del Carota with Arachnophobia screening, and helping Signora Grassi make carbonara in the kitchen!
PhD UC Berkeley, Applied Physics. Currently Engineer, Nvidia, Santa Clara CA. I was only at ISF for 8th grade, but it was a magical year. I treasure indelible memories of making my way across Florence in those orange buses, meeting friends downtown, taking the 31 or 32 to Bagno a Ripoli and packing into one of the two vans for the ride up the hill. To this day, the smell of box hedges near my home in Berkeley CA takes me back to the grounds of the villa that we were so fortunate to inhabit. I recall grudgingly having to run cross country for PE — only later did I appreciate what a privilege it was to tour the Tuscan hills that way!

Successful career in the Apparel & Footwear product development, sourcing and operations industry. Currently retired, living in Boston, MA. There are far too many fond memories of my time at ASF and far too many wonderful teachers who shaped our lives. Our trip to France with Madam Farson was one of the most memorable school trips I took and I know it is for so many of my former school mates. Suffice to say that to this day my closest friends remain those same friends from ASF.
Class of 2001
I graduated from Stanford University in 2005 and moved back to Seattle, Washington where my family moved after leaving Florence and ISF in 1995. I joined Microsoft for the next nine years working in various marketing and strategy roles. I then joined Amazon for the next 10 years working in various marketing roles and most recently led the North America Amazon Devices online marketing and growth team. In June 2024, my wife and our 6 and 4 year old boys moved to Florence where we are spending the year immersing our kids in Italian culture and trying to give them a similar experience to the one I had growing up here. Currently on a career break living in Florence.
I have many memories of attending ISF including the turtles in the Bagno a Ripoli villa, PE class with Mr. Cook playing tag down in the cantina, participating in the egg drop competition from the villa tower and the annual Field Day games. I credit my time at ISF and in Italy for exposing me to a diversity of cultures and people and am grateful to the many teachers and friends who were part of that journey.
Class of 2011
Since graduation, I’ve gained over seven years of experience across marketing, e-commerce, and front-end development. My career path reflects my love for learning and trying new things— something my education strongly encouraged by teaching me not to limit myself and to always stay curious. That mindset has allowed me to adapt, grow, and thrive in diverse roles. Currently an Ecommerce manager, living between Stockholm and Florence.
I have so many fond memories of inspiring teachers who truly left a mark on me. One of my favorite experiences was having Italian literature classes outdoors during our senior spring—sitting on the grass or under the gazebo made those moments feel extra special. I truly appreciated the supportive atmosphere created by the teachers, who not only guided us academically but also worked to instill core values like respect and responsibility. Their encouragement of critical thinking shaped lessons that extended far beyond the classroom. Very precious milestones were my marriage to Marcos and the birth of our first baby, Philip, on March 6th 2025.

Walt Disney Professor of Media & Communications at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University 2022. Founder of Kensington Wade 2017. www. kensingtonwade.com. Currently Chairman/ Founder, Kensington Wade Chinese-English Bilingual School, London. Many fond memories of Paul Burke-Mahoney, Headmaster, and Horace Gibson. Gibson attended my wedding by Cardinal Ciappi in Rome in 1986 and corresponded with me until his own death. Of all the schools I attended, I was happiest at (what is now ISF) and certainly drew upon my memories of that school when I founded Kensington Wade in London in 2017.
Hugo ‘Huge’ de Burgh is Director of China UK Creative Industries in the Institute of Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship, Goldsmiths College, University of London. Originally a broadcast journalist, he went on to teach journalism in Nottingham, in London and in China. He recently completed a fourth term at Tsinghua University, as Walt Disney Professor of Media and Communications in Schwarzman, the US college of international relations.
In 2016, he founded Kensington Wade EnglishChinese Bilingual Pre-Prep and Prep School in London. Although, worldwide, there are many Bilingual schools with Chinese, and 400 in the USA, Kensington Wade is still the only one in Europe.
Hugo has authored or co-authored 15 books. His China’s Media in the Emerging World Order (2020)
describes and analyses a burgeoning global power of the 21st century. Earlier books have dealt with environment reporting, how China works and the functions of journalists in the globalised, digitised, world.
His first novel, TO THE RIVER, why would you risk your life, and all that you love, for a stranger? was launched at the Mansion House by Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli and Lord Willetts, FRS, in September 2024. It is a reflection on altruism, set in war-torn Italy, 1943.
My best friend and schoolmate was Alessandro Foschini, who died 15 years ago. He was the representative of the Ministry of Beni Culturali to UNESCO. I have perpetuated his name by giving it to a character in my novel TO THE RIVER. I shall attach a photo of him and the flier for my novel. BA Univ. of Washington, Seattle. I am a writer and digital artist. I am a screenwriter. 3 of my scripts have been made into films (IMDB-Hold Your Hearses, etc.). Fine Art America digitalphoto-art. 2 novels are on Fictionate--The Return of Yesterday and Murder Depreciates. Retired. Lafayette, Indiana. I attended the St. Michael’s School, up in Bellosguardo, for the 10th grade, in 1970-71. We also lived in Bellosguardo, around the corner at the Villa Mercede. It was a transformative year for me, as a 15 year-old kid from suburban Boston suddenly dropped into this magical place. The arts and architecture of Florence became my daily hangouts. It was astoundingly beautiful, profoundly life-changing. When I left I had become an artist for life, though I didn’t quite know it yet. Grazie, Firenze.
And my growing up as a teenager was part of this magical transformation. The friends I made there became part of my mind, my memory, the foundation blocks of my mature sensibility. Peter Hill, Greg DeLauro, Chris Goddard, Robert Hunter, Jonathan Smith, Andrea Schell, Tanya Tarshis, James Powell, Sarah Burt…et les autres. Their faces still flick through my mind, half a century later. We shared those early passionate discoveries that teenagers all have, in this city of the best that humanity can do. So precocious! We didn’t know it yet but a challenge was laid before each of us: Now live up to Florence. Do something with the wondrous gifts that Florence put before us—put into us.
My favorite teacher at St. Michael’s was Githa Connely, who hailed from Australia. Monique Farson, Michael Petrucione, Guli Arshad, Horace Gibson—they all taught me while Florence was teaching me and they mix in my mind with visions of the wonderous human aspiring that is Florence’s lesson for the world.
Ciao, Firenze. I have loved you always, ever since.

With over 18 years of experience in branding, PR, and high-profile event management, I have successfully launched major European ventures and collaborated with renowned fashion and luxury brands. From leading Brooks Brothers’ expansion in Europe to orchestrating their 200th anniversary event at Palazzo Vecchio, featured in the *NY Times* and *Vogue*, I have consistently driven brand visibility on a global scale.
My expertise spans luxury, fashion, and sports, including managing sponsorships for Inter Milan and curating exclusive UEFA Champions League experiences. More recently, I founded my own agency, where I help brands refine their identity and elevate their presence across digital and offline channels. Through strategic PR, I have played a pivotal role in launching luxury events, book presentations, and retail activations, collaborating with esteemed names such as Baccarat, Francesco Maglia, and E. Marinella.
A results-driven and creative professional, I thrive on bringing brands to life through storytelling, strategy, and unforgettable experiences.
I have recently relocated to Florence, after living 24 years in Milan, , and I’m looking for new opportunities in communication and tourism. With a strong background in branding and communication, as well as expertise in project management, events and PR I’m eager to contribute my skills and connect with professionals in the field. Currently Freelance in branding and communication based in Florence. I have the fondest memories of my time at the American School, where I built lasting friendships that remain strong to this day. Between 1987 and 1992, those years were not only filled with learning but also played a pivotal role in shaping my character in extraordinary ways.
School life extended far beyond the classroom, I spent countless hours with my girlfriends, making the most of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, a time of pure fun and unforgettable experiences. I can still recall the freezing cold classrooms, where we had to keep our jackets on due to the
unreliable heating, and the excitement of our carnival party, where I dressed as Cupido in a heart-shaped dress lovingly handmade by my mother. Our school trip to Paris by train was an adventure in itself, and cheering on Fiorentina during our field trip remains a cherished memory.
Those years were truly special, filled with laughter, growth, and friendships that have stood the test of time.
The values of Respect, Responsibility, Relationships, and Resilience truly resonate with me, as they played a fundamental role in shaping my experience at the American School and continue to guide me in my personal and professional life.
• Respect was the foundation of our diverse and inclusive school environment, teaching us to appreciate different cultures, perspectives, and ideas, something that has been invaluable in my global career.
• Responsibility was instilled in us early on, from academics to friendships, helping us develop a strong work ethic and a sense of accountability that I carry with me to this day.
• Relationships were at the heart of my school experience, fostering deep connections that have lasted a lifetime. The bonds formed during those years continue to be a source of support and joy.
• Resilience was something we learned both inside and outside the classroom, whether it was pushing through challenges, adapting to new situations, or simply making the most of every moment.
“These values are not just words; they are the pillars that shaped us into who we are today.”
These values are not just words; they are the pillars that shaped us into who we are today. I’m grateful to have been part of a school that emphasised them so strongly.

TOBY DEAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION HEAD OF DEPARTMENT
During March and April, ISF students in Grades 6 to 10 participated in a range of activities around the important topic of Relationships and Sexual Health. This topic unit engaged students in a variety of life-long learning and essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships and staying safe. Each lesson was Grade level age and provided students with accurate information and communication skills to help them make decisions that can keep them healthy and safe. The content covered, and resources were shared with parents during Parent Engagement sessions in the week prior to the start of the topic.
Students and their families have a range of beliefs, cultures, and customs. Those family values are core, essential guidelines for their
child’s life. Our shared goal is to make sure students stay healthy and make safe choices. As a community we want students of all ages to be healthy in all aspects of their lives.
Why is Relationships and Sexual Health (RSH) an important topic to be taught in schools? Young people can get mixed messages related to relationships, sex, sexuality and their bodies (NSPCC, 2025). A comprehensive RSH programme plays a central role in the preparation of young people for a safe, productive, and fulfilling life in a world where HIV and AIDs, sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), unintended pregnancies, genderbased violence and gender inequality still pose serious risks to their well-being. A 2016 review found that curriculum- based RSH programmes contribute to increased use of

condoms, increased use of contraception, delayed initiation of sexual intercourse, and a decreased number of sexual partners amongst young people (UNESCO, 2018).
A comprehensive Relationships and Sexual Health Curriculum aims to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that, among many other factors, will empower them to consider how their choices affect their own well-being and that of others. A team of 5 experienced and qualified ISF Upper School Faculty used a number of resources recommended and approved by Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS) and mapped them across the learning outcomes of the UNESCO International Technical guidance on sexuality education to structure an ISF
specific programme. The keystone of the ISF RSH programme was to ensure that the first lesson at each grade level was grounded in the importance of relationships, and students explored and identified what are the characteristics of a healthy relationship. It was also an opportunity to reference this to the ISF core values, of which Relationships is one of the four. The team were very impressed by the mature, inquisitive and conscientious approach by all students.
A full review is currently underway by the team, however initial impressions, observations and feedback suggest the programme was delivered successfully.

Alumni Holiday Aperitivo
BACK TO BAR PETRARCA, OUR OLD STOMPING GROUND
On the evening of December 11, Bar Pertraca was filled with laughter and merriment as ISF alumni from a wide range of years met for the Alumni Holiday Aperitivo. Bar Pertraca was the perfect venue for this reunion, and served a delicious selection of nibbles and drinks, which were enjoyed by all.
Our guests included, Robbie Pio and his wife, Morgan Fiumi, Rosalie Gallinaro, Kathy Gallinaro, Paul Cook and his wife, Martha Toomey, her husband and son, Joseph Donat Bolton, Tanya Maria Kempton, Eva Coppini Balli, Irene Ivanaj, Ginevra Niccolini, Maria Novella Uzielli, Judson Monroe, Alice Cini Falconi, Teresa Meoni, Andrea Poggi, Alessia Busoni, Cole McCarthy, Silvia Stein, Erin Webster, Leila Fiumi, and Marco Mazzei
It was wonderful to see alumni from the 1970s meeting and conversing with alumni from the 2020s, and we received positive feedback from many of our guests:
“Thank you for a lovely event. It was great to see old friends and to meet new ones.”
“...this was nicely low key and really geared towards meeting other alumni from various decades who have not met one another before.”
During the course of the evening, we met our first Valedictorian, Martha Toomey, who was also one of the first Yearbook team, and learned of the antics of many of the other alumni who were present. We shared a video
message from our famous Miss Brooks, who sang Jingle Bells, and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Alessia Busoni popped in to greet everyone before dashing off to celebrate her 50th birthday.
It was lovely to see alumni who had traveled from the USA and from all over Italy to celebrate with us. Everyone left with promises of, “See you at the next reunion.”
Our Alumni Moms
“Many of us ISF Alumni moms have built friendships that have stood the test of time. Through the years, we’ve shared countless experiences—from school events and family milestones to the everyday ups and downs of life. These lasting connections are rooted in deep common bonds that allow us to talk openly about anything, from parenting challenges to personal triumphs. Even now, we still make the time to get together, laugh, support each other, and pick up right where we left off. Our friendship is a reminder that the ties formed during those beautiful ISF school years are truly lifelong.”
- Tilde Mariani Giacche
“A life changing place, where a mix of cultures and education while embracing differences, created a space for our kids to grow into true citizens of this world. Our two girls entered this school at different stages of their lives – one as a teenager and one just starting the school. 15 years have passed since then and both of them can say the ISF was the place where they learned the most about themselves and became the most curious about the world around them.”
- Dragana Vlatkovic
