The Locus of a City

Preface Roads include lanes, sidewalks, alleys, pipelines and even squares. In the past, road started from the open spaces between neighboring houses, which was developed into migration paths, religious pilgrimage and commercial trade behaviors. The real booming of road construction is attributed to political development of the country. Military views roads important strategic facilities. Events in different periods must have reason of existence under different backgrounds. Therefore, roads have common and indispensable influence to urban problems at that time.

evolution. Therefore, urban development has to date back to historical conditions and geographical factors, and conform to contemporary demands, such as military goal, religious contract, commercial capitalism or industrial park. Nevertheless, we can get deeper understanding on corresponding architecture and urban environment when we have mastered cultural and historical structures at different stages. Renewal of each city has some elimination mechanism as time goes on. Meanwhile, some events were kept invisibly during city changes. We tried to explore which are closely related with elimination and replacement. In this paper, these are discussed in four types through case study. Movement of Heart which was written by Harvey in 1628 emphasizes on importance of circulation to health. It influences people’s opinion on health (including physical health and economic health), thus shifting attentions of urban planning from physical building into free movement: in city with flowing artery and veins, people can flow like

The TV documentar y was made for a progressive broadcasting corporation and shows the Amsterdam neighbourhood “De P ijp” which was about 100 years old at the time. The homes were run down and small. The streets were never built, nor fit for all the cars brought in by the 40,000 people living in the small area and its many visitors. This led to an overpopulated neighbourhood with a lot of dirt and filth and especially the children suffered. The documentar y is one of a series and this particular episode looks at the situation from a child’s perspective.

open space per capita, including parks, green

existing conditions. The Nanjing West Road, the main road to Datong District, lies in the south of the Rixin Elementary School and the entrance of surface sidewalk is connected with wall of the school. On the one hand, entrance of the library and bus shelter can meet needs of different users. On the other hand, they implement the philosophy of open school and there’s no spatial separation for different service time or objects. The service mode of the library has been changing continuously. We begin to think how to use underground public spaces and how to realize imagination on future library. Du r i n g J a p a n e s e o c c u p a t i o n , t h e R i x i n Elementary School was a rectangle shaped structure centered at the playground and platform, representing respect, discipline and commander. In our design, another rectangle shaped structure is added on B1 and PROGRAM of the library is used as the main axis in these two rectangle shaped structures to connect with surrounding areas. Library is the bridge between internal and external environments. Open spaces and aisles are constructed below the base. Students are not walking on the road simply and the road width gives an opportunity to form underground motion space, which breaks previous design of quiet environment in library. The rectangle shaped library creates a mobile reading space

land and squares. We discovered that 60% of land utilization in Datong District is occupied by public space. In other words, 1/3 of Datong District is roads.

We chose Datong District as the base to discuss public potentials of roads. We suggest that road is building. Feasibility of using roads as building was tested in an experiment in the Nanjing West Road, which was discussed in four parts: library (ROAD AS INFORMATIOM), theater (ROAD AS RECREATION), museum (ROAD AS PRESERVATION)

Library (ROAD AS INFORMATIOM) In Datong District, road accounts for 1/3 of public spaces. Here, road as a tool for urban renewal is discussed based on the National Elementary School with the highest density. Roads are used as the knowledge passing way and the library is set below roads. Histories are piled up layer by layer. Road records the city development. As one public and important place in the history, the library provides different spaces from other library below roads. and offer different entertainment facilities and pathways. It likes an indoor basketball court and expands the road between the school and the park, so that the original underground parking lot close to the base is connected. Books of different periods are arranged in the staired library space. Students can fell time and spatial changes through changes of books and verticality. The library space is divided into different layers. Service mode of library begins to change the actual spatial arrangement with development from traditional library spaces based on books and physical readings to nowadays e-books. Library is not just “reading books”. With information popularization by technological development, electronic library is developed and the reading habits are changed from computer reading to cellphone reading accordingly. Compared to quiet and closed environment in traditional library, this library has many discussion rooms. They are like glass boxes and connect private spaces with public areas. The hierarchical design echoes with contempory information sharing based on individuals, media or traditional books. In the structure, there’s good illumination in the central safety island and side illumination in sidewalks. Imagine you are in a library and surrounded by different-height book shelves, vehicles and pedestrains on the dome skylight,

and cloud and sky as well as urban buildings above your head. Each step will remind users that they are walking under one city or they are supporting one city. Now, the library which is the palace of knowledge connects two elementary schools and creates an urban public space. It serves as the bridge between past urban development and future urban development. Roads can pass and record knowledge and give links to urban process. Theater (ROAD AS RECREATION) Many theaters were built in Dadaocheng during the Japanese occupation. Dadaocheng remained the business center of Taipei city for a long time after the war. Meanwhile, some larger and more luxurous theaters were built. There were a total of 13 theaters disappeared in the history. The foundation of theater lies in the recreation center of Dadaocheng. The Black Beauty Hotel and Big Department Store witnessed the most persperious Dadaocheng in Taipei city and the 2-28 Incident.Tianma tea room is one component of the old Taipei city and Dadaocheng. Publicity of theater is very strong in nowadays and the past. Since times architecture and space give different explanation to theater, the distance between audience and performers is occurred. The value of space can be reflected by usage. We created a special experience of watching

films to facilitate development of film industry to the public. Underground film is beyond the reach of any other places. Firstly, audiences enter into the underground theater and walk between reality and imagination under the guidance of time. Roads for daily activities are changed into places of film play. This tests feasibility of using road as public space. In this underground space, columns are structural systems and each floor represents different spirits of site. The first floor underground is the open introductory lobby in relative to roads. It used glass roofs which let citizens to watch and appreciate the city from “down to up”. By the public path between underground building and the Nanjing West Road, publicity is reflected by plane openness of the city and black-white gradient between private spaces. Moreover, people can see expansion possibilities of public areas from the section of the city. The void structure of the first floor underground connects with the theater space in the second floor underground. Theater is closely related with life. Most theaters have one intangible wall between real life and stage. The column system in the second floor underground defines the plane range of theater and the verticality extends the spirit of public space. Performances can be watched from up to down. This increases opportunity of connection between pedestrians

and the performed event. In the third floor underground, the column system expresses the history of Taipei city. It is used for the memory of 2-28 Incident. Structural column is the monument. Theater and life were closely related in the past. The city doesn’t need another independent public building, but needs to inherit publicity of roads and remember life scenes on the street. Museum (ROAD AS PRESERVATION) Walk along the west of the Nanjing West Road and we will arrive at the crossroad of Yanping North Road. This crossroad is next to the 2-28 Incident once was the entertainment place during prosperous period of Dadaocheng. The Black Beauty Hotel locates at the crossroad and is recorded as a historical building by the government. Besides, elements of the Qing Dynasty and Japanese occupation are reserved. Coffee house in the second floor is typical in early western-style entertainment building and reflects the elegant living in Taiwan at that time. Entertainment and living facilities are equipment below this crossroad which has many stories and historical significance. There’s a central entrance. Four vertical faces in four directions of this central entrance extend to four different places and will lead citizens into different roles of the story. Theater and movie house are in the east,

and museum is in the west. In all four directions of the central entrance, there’s one spatial transition zone surrounded by double-layer arc door. Different scenes are arranged in four directions. It has no direct entrances on the road. People have to enter into this central square and then walk into different sites unconsciously from four directions. A great cross-section of floor is designed after entered into the museum from the crossing arch of theater. One sloping wall cut from surface to the third floor underground. Exposed floor layers, piled-up museum and pile-up Taipei city can be seen clearly from west downward. Standing in the middle bridge, you are under the city of one time and stepping on the city of the other time. From the space with lighting plants in the first floor underground to the second flow underground, the exhibition space is more transparent and the semi-transparent space formed by mirror cross column in the third floor underground makes the museum an underground maze. The sloping wall reflects natural lights from the cross-section into deep places, which expresses continuous changes and variety of visually interactive experiences of spaces and lights. Tamsui River Museum Tamsui River is the lifeblood of Taipei city. The Taipei city Basin was formed by alleviation of

rivers. However, river flood once threatened the survival of Taipei city. We are separated from the nearest rivers by dikes. The relationship between Taipei city and Tamsui River water is contradictory and complicated. Anti-flood wall was constructed, but the city wanted to be close to water. Dikes not only protect the city from river flooding, but also keep us from rivers. A river -intimating museum is designed on dikes, which exhibits Tamsui rivers. It is connected with the bikeway. The interaction between dynamics of bikeway and tidal changes of Tamsui rivers becomes a special experience. Light penetrates into the bikeway at tide falling. In the museum tunnel, the bikeway is bright and dark alternatively. River will food over the glass roof during rising tide and people can experience changes of river. It is the most direct experience to be close to the Tamsui r rivers. Stadium (ROAD AS AGGREGATION) The Jiancheng Roundabout is the landmark of prosperous Taipei city in the past.

( R O A D A S A R C H I T E C T U R E, ) 建築的形狀
