THE BAOBAB TREE: AFRICA’S ICONIC “TREE OF LIFE”

Reflections Like Branches On A Tree, We May Grow In Different Directions, Yet Our Roots Remain As One As we approach the end of 2019, we look forward to celebrating 2020, cherishing along the way the nostalgic memories made in the year past in this yearbook. The theme of the 2019 yearbook is THE BAOBAB TREE (Adansonia digitata)--an icon of the Afrikan continent, a source of life for wildlife and humans alike, and the embodiment of what ISD represents.

Perched in the plains of the Afrikan Savannah for over 200 million years to-date, this majestic tree reaches heights as high as 30 meters and circumference as wide as 50 meters. It has a fascinating adaptive character, where during the rainy season it stores 80% of the water in its trunk, enabling it to yield its sweet eponymous fruit in the dry season. Its bark and flesh are soft, fibrous and fire-resistant, and can be used to weave rope and cloth. The tree can also be used in the production of a variety of products including soap, rubber, and glue; and its leaves can be used in traditional medicine.

The baobab can store up to 4,500 litres of water and stand 5,000 years strong in its habitual arid climate. It is a life-giver for the Afrikan wildlife, often creating its very own ecosystem and a haven for a myriad of species--from the tiniest insects to the mighty Afrikan elephant.

The versatility of the baobab and its fascinating resiliency draw a parallel to ISD’s character. The baobab’s preeminent stature is akin to ISD’s current standing as the school positions itself to greater heights with an expansion of its educational opportunities, which include: The addition of a special education classroom to cater to students with moderate to specialized learning needs; The increase in the number of staff to better support students learning English as another language; The creation of a teaching and learning centre to further enrich student’s academic studies; The valuable investment in the Arts (in the form of the addition of dance as a physical education class, and the creation of two new art rooms), giving students a chance to maximize opportunities to explore various creative avenues.

The baobab’s highly adaptive trait mirrors the season of success in which ISD currently lies. At present, the school is bracing itself for the opening of a new Performing Arts Center and Athletic Complex. set for early 2020. The new building will have a 350-seat concert hall, a black box theatre, an art gallery, two full-sized courts, additional classrooms and training facilities to name a few, to accommodate the 45% increase in enrollment sustained over the past five years.

Its longevity is a symbol of the school’s capacity to build generations of success among its diverse student body through continuous improvements of its programs.

DIRECTOR’S DISPATCH: WHO WE ARE The 36th year of the International School of Dakar was kicked off with the traditional Opening Ceremony. ISD Board Chair, Thiaba Camara Sy, the leadership of the ISD Parent Teacher Organization, and I welcomed the 250 plus parents in attendance. Thiaba, who is in her 11th year as a Trustee and first year as Board Chair, shared that, “today’s ceremony opens several new chapters in the lives of the community” as ISD enrollment eclipsing 700 students for the first time in its history and, “It will be the first time in Dakar, let alone the rest of Senegal, that a project as grand as our Performing Arts Center and Athletics Complex is inaugurated by an educational organization.” Thiaba also addressed on the role of the board which is to oversee the current and future well-being of the school.

Its role is strategic and does not address issues relating to day to day operations, which fall under the Director’s responsibility.

The leadership of the ISD Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Lauren Miller, Emma Archer, and Dan Holmes, shared the various activities and events organized by the PTO. This organization is focused on supporting the school and bringing the community together through various events both on and off-campus. ISD’s Strategic Plan calls on the faculty to challenge, create, and change our students, our school, and ourselves.

This is done by keeping the students as the main focus of everything we do.

When making decisions about the educational programming, facilities, or the budget, the question remains What is in the best interest of the students?

We have made significant strides in our academic program. After two years of hard work by our elementary teachers and administration, we are now fully authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program for grades Pre-K 3 to grade five.

Last May, our grade twelve students achieved strong results in their IB Diploma Exams. The IB Diploma Program requires students to take six rigorous courses, three of which are equivalent to university-level courses.

It is the gold standard of high school diplomas and highly respected by universities in Europe, Canada, and the United States. The table below shows the results for the past three years.

In 2017, 68% of the grade 12 students were full IB Diploma students. Last year, this increased to 93%. At ISD, we encourage all students to strive for excellence. More important than a percentage “pass rate” is our emphasis on being an inclusive school. While it may be true that this “pass rate” went down marginally, research tells us that students who take IB courses will do better than those that do not, even if the IB students do not pass the course exams. All grade 12 students last year earned the ISD High School Diploma. Scores on the IB Diploma Program range from 6 to 45 points with 24 points required to earn the diploma. Worldwide, the average score is 30. In the past two years, ISD students averaged 31 points before jumping to 33 points last year. The recent improvements are a credit to the hard work of our students and teachers along with the support of parents.

We are proud of our school’s development, which is a product of the dedication and determination of our community’s many stakeholders. ISD has established an identity as an IB World School focused on sustained excellence.

GROWTH AT ISD

The International School of Dakar has experienced a 45% growth in enrollment over the past five years, including approximately 100 more students this year. The Board and Administration expanded the number of classroom teachers from two per grade level to three per grade level four years ago in anticipation of this growth. As a result, we could accept almost all of the applicants, although we now have waitlists in several grades. While we have enough classroom teachers, we hired additional French, Pre-K 4, English as Another Language, and Learning Support teachers to ensure we keep these class sizes within expected limits.

This year ISD is striving for excellence in all areas.

Academically, we will continue to adopt best practices in the Primary Years and Middle Years Program. We were fortunate to have recruited many experienced IB teachers for the PYP, MYP, and IB Diploma. Only one teacher in our high school will be new to the IB Diploma Program.

Our experienced faculty will continue to refine our IB Diploma Program to help our students achieve their potential. To better serve all students, we have expanded our academic support services in all schools. In elementary school, we have added a special education classroom to support students with moderate specialized learning needs and increased the number of staff to support students learning English as another language. In the Secondary School, we built the Teaching and Learning Center to create a hub where any student can get support.

To complement our exceptional band and music program, we have added two new purpose-built art rooms, including one dedicated to IB Diploma Art Students. Our new elementary music teacher will start a choir program in all schools as

an after-school activity. Also, dance has now been added to all physical education classes in secondary school and will be taught by an experienced dance teacher. Our academic goals for the year are focused on becoming an even better IB World School. The elementary school will fully implement the IB Primary Years Program and better align the curriculum between the grades, so there is no overlap or gaps. We will continue the implementation of the IB Middle Years Program as the teachers adapt their unit plans to be more focused on student inquiry. The teachers and administrators in the IB Diploma Program will be looking at how to improve overall student performance in courses where they have historically not performed as well as we expected.

Outside of the classroom, the Administration is looking at ways to expand our after-school activities programs, including adding mother tongue language classes for students. We are also looking to increase the number of activities we offer and invite parents to share the contact information of people in the community who can provide high-quality activities. Our service programs will continue to give our students’ experiences working with and learning from our Senegalese partners.

Taken together, it is clear that ISD is on an exciting trajectory toward excellence in all facets of the learning experience. We have an increasingly strong group of educators and support staff that will facilitate the successful intake of many new faces in the classroom. Additionally, the final construction of the PAC and Athletic Complex will allow for continued excellence in the arts, athletics, and other programming on campus. MOSAIC PROJECT Do you love art? Making our garden a special space for children to grow and learn!

Local mosaic artist, Isabel Hourchani, from the Kamal Art Studio (www.kamal-mosaic.com) teaching children and their parents on how to make stepping stones for the ISD garden. With, each stone being added to the garden pathway and each contribution being part of the kids legacy and the ISD Garden Pathway, for years to come.

There were trick-or-treat games, music, food, and spooky costumes all around the campus. Both students and parents got in on the fun and came dressed up in scary, funny, costumes.

first Halloween at ISD. When they walked through the gate they were surprised to see the school transformed with decorations and costumed people walking everywhere. The Trick-orTreating started first, and this was their FAVORITE activity of the night.

Behind doors, around corners and in rooms were spooky goblins, ghouls and skeletons handing out candy, and WOW did they ever get a lot of candy. Once they were finished they happily met up with friends, bought snacks at various booths and waffled about going into the haunted house, which they never entered, since it was too scary. With Taylor Mcdowell Mali

Taylor McDowell Mali (born March 28, 1965) is an American, Brooklynbased slam poet, humorist, teacher, and voiceover artist who has been teaching spoken word workshops all over the world since 2000.

The week of 28 - 31 October 2019 we welcomed Taylor McDowell Mali to ISD, one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement. He ran a series of poetry workshops with our students and even gave a few performances. To celebrate his visit, ISD held its first Pints & Poetry night in the library with students and teachers presenting their own poems.

A grand piano wrapped in quilted pads by movers, tied up with canvas straps—like classical music’s birthday gift to the criminally insane— is gently nudged without its legs out an eighth‐floor window on 62nd street.

It dangles in April air from the neck of the movers’ crane, Chopin-­‐shiny black lacquer squares and dirty white crisscross patterns hanging like the second‐to­‐last note of a concerto played on the edge of the seat, the edge of tears, the edge of eight stories up going over— it’s a piano being pushed out of a window and lowered down onto a flatbed truck!—and I’m trying to teach math in the building across the street.

Who can teach when there are such lessons to be learned?

All the greatest common factors are delivered by long‐necked cranes and flatbed trucks or come through everything, even air.

Like snow.

Taylor Mali was a big hit among all of the students. There were several students about campus who were inspired and scribbled out poems during recess break. The younger students thoroughly enjoyed Lamine Diémé and their beautiful story quilts are on display in the primary pagoda area.

The French Team enjoyed a variety of guest parent readers.

It was fun to see the teachers and students all decked out for Spirit Week. They showed their enthusiasm by wearing their school colors, their wacky tacky gear and so much more! We had lots of guest readers in the classrooms and around the campus, reading was a celebration.

Lamine Diémé is our visiting illustrator. He has several books available in local stores such as Clairafrique and Librarie Aux 4 Vents. Lamine worked with the PreKinder students through second grade students. Their activity which included StoryQuilting, the act of drawing story, assembling the parts of a story, and imagining a new ending to the story.

SPIRIT WEEK The students at ISD are full of school spirit! They love coming to school to learn but they also really enjoy celebrating with their friends and this year was no exception. The Elementary Student Council worked in collaboration with upper school students to celebrate Reading Week with a wide array of costumes and color. Students dressed up as twins, they arrived in their pajamas, they wore wacky clothes, and even dressed up like their favorite literary character. Good fun was had by all.

My piece is inspired by polynesian and african culture.

I wanted to incorporate the two cultures, but rather than singling out the differences show how they could complement each other when combining them into one piece. The word Rarotonga comes from polynesian culture meaning together. This piece is special to me because it represents how I come from a different culture that together made me who I am today.

JAGARTS FESTIVAL

JagArts is a celebration of students’ artwork and the creative process that happens in the arts! This year JagArts 2020 highlighted students’ talents in Music,Theater, Film & Photography, and the Visual Arts. Musical performances focused on musical form, intonation, and performance technique through a variety of music genres and styles.

Film and Photography presented short films with emphasis on cinematography, sound design and editing techniques. Theater performances involved a short Mummers Play, short masked stories, displays based on their studies of Othello, and a performance of a devised piece on the theme of Forced Marriage. Visual Art students displayed an array of artworks in pencil, charcoal, watercolor, printmaking, acrylic, sculpture and ceramics. In addition, art processes involved in the making of large self portraits and reduction relief prints displayed practices in drawing skills, experimentation in different types of printing, painting, and stencil work.

Pick U Up - Foster The People

I created this piece to complement the song “Pick U Up” by the band Foster The People. I used bright colors to give the piece a youthful and happy atmosphere similar to that of the song and i used surreal and outlandish imagery to give the piece energy.

WINTER CONCERT

The Winter Concert took place in January this year (immediately following JAG Arts) and featured performances by the Concert Band and the Stage Band. Neoclassical works, such as Gathering in the Glen by Michael Sweeney and Shackelford Banks by Jay Bocook, were performed by the Concert Band and were well received.

The Stage Band performed more contemporary works like Billie Jean by Michael Jackson and On Broadway which was made popular by jazz and R&B guitarist George Benson. We also had guest Moses Kambale whose dance skills brought a fun flair to the event.

GLOBAL ISSUES SERVICE SUMMIT

By: Noah Rodriguez ISD recently attended the 11th AISA GISS (Association of International Schools in Africa Global Issues Service Summit) at the International Community School of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. Students from all over Africa met to discuss issues of global significance and to learn more about service.

The First Annual Artapalooza was a celebration in honor of the elementary students’ imagination and creativity.

Third through fifth grade kicked off the event with an evening art exhibition that included music, food and art activities.

Students proudly shared their artwork with family and friends explaining the process involved with each creation. They also enjoyed the photo booth, scavenger hunt, I Spy, drawing prompts and other fun art activities throughout the evening.

The following week, first and second grade had Artapalooza during their regular art class period. Artapalooza was a wonderful way to share creativity, build confidence and support all of ISD’s young artists!

“a three-day annual summit hosted by an AISA member school.

AISA-GISS motivates and encourages students to enquire about global issues and learn alongside other delegates and change-makers from across Africa. Student delegates spend time presenting, learning, sharing and discussing important issues during the summit, followed by a hands-on service learning day in the local community.

AISA-GISS provides delegates with opportunities to strategize solutions to global issues, meaningful sessions and stories about positive change happening here in Africa, and the support for taking action and engagement in their own communities. ” Eight juniors and two teachers from ISD attended this year’s conference and they had a lot to say about it. From the workshops (one of which was organized by ISD) to the speaker presentations to the hands-on help, students were able to experience multiple service-oriented projects that helped them develop their ideas. During a reflective meeting after the event, I was able to hear the opinions of most participating members, both positive and challenging, and how they learned from the experience.

Many students stated that they found the possibility of speaking to so many different people extremely helpful.

They were able to gain a lot of new knowledge from both speakers and other students. For example, one student noticed how issues in Senegal are quite similar to global issues affecting Africa. Another gained a lot of insight when talking with a speaker on feminism and rape accusations. Some found certain ideas presented to be very clever and helpful, which may help them in the future if they ever want to make their own service projects. Another key factor that everyone appreciated was how the majority of the event was student-led, both the workshops and visits to villages for direct service were organized by students, even the event itself (and the website).

There were some issues with the event that both students and teachers noticed. The main problem was with the organization and the direct service; it was felt that the activity they did was not the same as the one they thought they had signed up for. Some felt that they weren’t doing enough or were only mitigating an issue. One student mentioned that they felt like there were sections of wasted time during the day when they could have been doing something else. A teacher had learned about the lack of time that students at the hosting school had to plan the event. The fact that they had to take exams the week after the event did not help them, and in all consideration, the event was still a very valuable experience.

Learning about environmental issues, service projects and the people working on them has been very helpful to all the attending ISD members, so a big round of applause to them for their work in trying to make the world a better place.

NGOR TRIP

POPENGUINE TRIP

On the 24th of January 2020, the Grade 2 students visited Ngor Village, in Dakar, Senegal. As the students were studying the PYP interdisciplinary theme of How We Organize Ourselves. The goal of the trip was for the students to observe and gain a deeper understanding of how people in the community depend on each other and help each other by sharing their skills, abilities and talents.

Fifth-grade students visited La Somone and Popenguine, put their recycling skills to use and became teachers at a local school. They cleaned up the campus, brought in fishing

Firstly, we stopped at the Ngor market where the kids saw local products sold by vendors at their tables and in their boutiques. Followed by the visit to the public elementary school, where we visited a CP class, with students about the same age as our second graders. By spending time together sharing songs and games. As this was an important service learning activity, where our ISD students will teach games they know and the Ngor students will teach games they know, leading to a friendly exchange between students.

After that we had a nice long walk along the beach to observe the pirogues, and the fishing life of the village, explaining how the economy of the fishing village works. Last, of all, we were greeted by local musicians and ate a delicious traditional Senegalese lunch at Ms Shelly’s courtyard house.

Grade 5 students had a chance to culminate two units of inquiry with an overnight trip to Popenguine last week. With nearly 60 boundless inquirers we formulated experiments, went on eye-opening nature walks, and learned about the rich resources and lagoon ecosystem of Somone Mangrove Reserve.

After interviewing local fisherman from Niangal Village and expanding our circle of viewpoints we went to a local school to share knowledge on environmental awareness, planted trees as a symbol of new growth between our two schools, cleaned up trash on the school compound and took part in a tug-of-war with nature, cooperating in a committed haul using local fishing nets to see what the ocean bounty had in store.

This experiential learning adventure was an overall success with students still candidly sharing their highlights from the Petite Côte. This trip set our foundation for service learning in the area.

This year’s service learning trip was quite an experience! We visited a farm where we learned about the different ways in which people live and their innovative ways to cook their food without an electric or gas stove. We visited a school where we got the chance to build relations with other students of our age and observe how they live and learn. We also got to have a tour of Saint Louis in horse carriages and we went to a beach via boats and built sea defenses. All these experiences were quite helpful in expanding our knowledge. Visiting the farm helped us understand and learn how the people of that village were making the most of their resources and how they used fecal matter from the cows to heat and cook their food with in the absence of a stove.

When we visited the school, we really got to see how the students our age were determined to learn and perform well in their studies despite not having the resources that we do. Riding in the horse carriages while having the tour guide explain the significance of the different places we stopped at, really increased our understanding regarding the history of Saint Louis. Going to the beach to build the defenses educated us about the environmental conditions of the city and that the reason we picked that specific beach was because it was the most connected and it was the best beach for them to restore the marine life which was damaged due to over fishing and pollution. Overall, the trip was a great opportunity for the 8th grade to learn new information by visiting a place and learning about the environmental conditions of that place.

It was a great trip and the students of next year will definitely enjoy it!.

In the MYP and DP, service is at the core of education. One way in which the Secondary School puts service at the forefront is by our Week Without Walls trips. Last week the 6th - 11th grades traveled all across Senegal to participate in service trips. Our 6th Grade students went to Lompul where they helped to plant gardens. Even though this trip was cut short due to the severe Harmattan the group made a difference and was an example of how to be flexible when adjusting plans and make the most out of what was possible. The 7th Grade learned about the ecosystem of the mangroves and oyster farming. They also partnered with a local school to learn alongside them. The 8th Grade traveled to St. Louis where they helped build a sea wall and work at a local middle school. 9th grade traveled to Joal and learned about the way of life in a vibrant Senegalese fishing community. In addition, there was an element of adventure as the camped on seashell island traveling to and from the island by Pirogue. 10th grade journeyed to the village of Ndem where they participated in service through cooking, working at the school, gardening, and helping the village in daily duties.

Finally, our 11th Grade students went to Simone where they taught local students English, painted interiors of the school, and helped with other required and essential maintenance work. Our students experienced all sorts of different living conditions and were exposed to the ways of life that are normal for many members of our host nation outside of Dakar.

The mutually beneficial learning experiences provide a real authentic context of international-mindedness and global citizenship. We thank them and their teachers for a challenging, creative week which involved giving ourselves in the service of others.

SUPER HERO FIELD DAY

MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD DAY

Super Hero Field Day this year was a great success, bringing much joy and happiness to all. Every child was equipped with their very own field day shirt, helping them feel as part of a team. Students participated in 10 stations, watched some of their classmates put on an amazing dance, catch balls launched hundreds of feet in the air, and competed in a friendly tug of war game.

On Friday, October 11th, 2019 the five house groups(Ngor, Mugn, Aajo, Kersa, and Sutura) took on 21 challenges offered by the middle school teachers and administrators. Each house group made a smaller team of 5-7 people and developed a plan to take on the teachers’ challenges in the last two hours of the school day. Here were the challenges (Obstacle course, skillet catch, huck n’ catch, dance routine, timeline history, sponge run, tennis balls and baskets, potato sack, putting for points, marble obstacle course, cornhole, juggling, put your shoes on, blindfolded basketball free throws, volleyball team rally, bowling, limbo, spikeball, bocce ball, cup stacking, and frisbee target practice.) Teams earned 2 points by trying an activity, 6 for almost completing it and 10 for completing the task. Congrats to Sutura for earning 618 points and winning Field Day. Second place went to Mugn with 567 points and third place went to Kersa with 548 points. Congrats to the Jaguars on Team Kersa for earning 150 points, which was the most points out of all the 25 teams. A big thank you, to all the teachers that ran all the stations, Admin for their support and Shady for the treats.

While we might be separated by miles, we are not separated in our commitments to connections and learning. The Secondary School is hard at work to continue our work throughout the year and up until June 10th.

In the first 3 weeks of online learning, there have been some huge accomplishments. As a Secondary School our first order of business was to undertake the extraordinary task of submitting all of the coursework requested by the IBO in order to finalize decisions regarding the award of IB Diplomas across the world, without the annual end of course exams. For the first time in history this has been the case for around 200000 students across the globe. It is a testament to our wonderful ISD teachers that at the time of writing all of the extra work, in the service of our Class of 2020 has been completed in record time, with an efficiency and quality second to none.

Teaching and learning has of course been continuing with online education for all of our secondary students from Grades 6 through 11. The innovation, creativity, flexibility, openness and collaboration displayed by all sections of our community, in particular our students has been truly amazing. Our faculty of course misses the daily contact with students, and we get to interact with them through Zoom where they engage in learning as well as making us smile. The faculty also meets with each other in weekly faculty meetings (among other meetings) where we plan for our students, celebrate our students, and celebrate each other. Stay safe, stay healthy and stay in touch.

Not only am I so grateful to be with my family during these unusual days but I am grateful to be connected to all of you. Let’s all take this opportunity to treasure those we love. My love for our community is enormous! Here are just a couple of things I love about ISD today: 1) Even though it’s hard, teachers and students are stretching themselves as learners and taking on new challenges with patience and grace.

The heart above is sent from an Airbnb in Ottawa, Canada where Narcisa and I are currently in day 4 of our 14 day quarantine. We were unable to return to Senegal while on our March break and found our way back to Canada, via Lisbon and Brussels. While our first choice was to return home to Dakar and to ISD, we find ourselves here and we are making the best of it.To join in Ms. Mary’s wonderful idea, given we are in Canada, we thought the best way to show our love is through something typically Canadian - pancakes with maple syrup. While we remain at a geographic distance, know that our hearts are with you, grounded in ISD. We are looking forward to seeing you as soon as possible, back at ISD. While in this situation, please take time to reflect and consider that which is at the heart of our community. The quote to the above is one that will help us learn from our current situation and ground ourselves well when we get back to normal.

DR. SHAWN FELTON VISIT ISD was honored to have hosted Dr. Shawn Felton, Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Cornell University October 3-4. His visit was part of a US State Department-sponsored trip through West Africa with the Overseas Schools Project. Over his two days with us, Dr. Felton met with all high school students, the ISD faculty, and the ISD parent community. After spending time meeting the administration and exploring ISD with the high school counselors, Dr. Felton worked with the juniors and seniors. In an exciting and masterful session, he prompted the students for impromptu answers to actual college personal essay questions. “Share an obstacle that you have faced and how you overcame it.” “Talk about a passion you have and how you have cultivated it.”

“Discuss an issue that is important to you.” The questions kept at a fervent pace, and our ISD students handled them with impressive thoughtfulness and reflection. In all, the session was a smashing success, allowing our pending graduates to shine. Later on in the afternoon, Dr. Felton engaged with the faculty about writing letters of recommendation. In this session, he discussed many best practices for how to go about writing letters. He also distributed mock applications for the faculty to examine and discuss. One faculty member who is new to ISD commented, “I wish I had heard this information at the beginning of my career!” Of course, it was another fantastic program.

In the evening, Dr. Felton met with about 50 ISD parents, a tremendous turnout for an evening event. Dr. Felton’s main thrust during this part of the programming was to share an overview of the US application system and process, sharing insights gleaned from a career spent navigating it. He discussed a variety of different types of institutions, including the often misunderstood liberal

arts college. The parents responded to his vigor with excellent engagement and questions. After a quick night’s sleep, he was back at it the next morning, beginning the day with a session with the freshmen and sophomores. Similar to the program with the juniors and seniors, this time, he put students on display with a litany of questions and points of inquiry about their pursuits of passion. The word “college” was seldom if ever, uttered. The student energy was high, and the students were engaged. The rest of the day on Friday was spent meeting with various drop-in visitors answering questions and discussing different components of the application process. In the end, we benefited so much from Dr. Felton’s visit and are so appreciative of having had the opportunity to have him visit ISD. We thank him wholeheartedly and invite him to return whenever he would like.

Our After School Activities program is a key part of our great Co-Curricular Learning vision. We believe that all40 // 131

students should have the opportunity to be well-rounded, balanced learners who are willing to take risks in the classroom and on campus outside of the classroom before and after school.

Our programming extends from Pre-K through to Grade 12. We offer activities that are as varied and diverse as

our student body. Some of our most popular Elementary After School Activities include karate, tae kwon do, circus arts, African drumming, step dancing, contemporary dance, ballet, robotics, soccer, basketball, and many more.

Our secondary activities program encompasses some of our flagship after school programs like Model United Nations, robotics, and “Math Counts” but also include stand alone, teacher-led initiatives like a cooking club, arts and crafts, Dungeons and Dragons, and many other fun, engaging activities. These activities complement our athletics and arts programming to help bring life to our vision of the well balanced student.

ANNUAL COLLEGE TOUR ISD

After walking a total of over 70 kilometers in a week through the beautiful university campuses and bustling Los Angeles streets, the 2020 university group got a sense of scale unlike any trip before.

We visited a total of 10 universities, 2 per day, at one point 3, so we were constantly on the move. We saw everything from small colleges with less than 2,000 people to universities so massive they were described as small cities. When we weren’t touring campuses, we were enjoying all that Los Angeles had to offer. We visited Universal Studios, strolled down the Santa Monica pier, cheered at a USC basketball game and did so much shopping we came back with more luggage than we started with! Not to mention all the amazing restaurants and US food that we got to enjoy. All in all a fun and very educational trip to the “West Coast of the World.”

WAISAL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE 2019 By: Rachel McCollaum (Year 1 DP Student) Recently I had the amazing opportunity, along with ten other ISD students, to attend the 2019 Leadership WAISAL Conference held in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire. Three other WAISAL schools also participated. Before coming, we took a personality test, and during the conference, we learned about our strengths and possible limiters. We learned that being self-aware is a keystone for us to improve, showing that if we know about ourselves, then we understand how best we learn and possible setbacks.

Not only did we gain self-awareness, but we also learned about other personality types and how important it is to understand how other people learn. We learned how important it is to understand our purpose, which helps us to become better leaders. When setting goals, we will make sure that our mission is aligned with them as they work hand in hand. Additionally, we learned how

building trust and good relationships with teammates creates a positive environment where we can both give and receive critical feedback. We see this relationship demonstrated through communication face to face and the utilization of social media. The WAISAL Leadership Conference builds understanding through communities, teammates, and our strengths and potential limiters.

Through this conference, we were able to bond with other schools without the usual “competitiveness” often found in sports events. We were all there to learn and cooperate to build relationships with other schools, but also break the negativity of a “rival” school mentality.

Now when we meet for sports events, we know each other better and can demonstrate positive sportsmanship and support each other more fully.

On the 07th of November, 2019, ten of our students travelled to Lisbon, Portugal to take part in the Iberian Model United Nations conference.

As the youth of today and decision makers of tomorrow, we have the duty to be interested in political matters and global issues. If we ignore those, we are going to keep on only complaining about the errors of the generations before us without bringing real solutions on the table. And that is why MUN is a great platform to figure out the issues and find solutions. MUN helps us to collaboratively find ways to potentially make the world a better place and teaches us to live in harmony with each other. The trip to Lisbon was great, but there were several things that were done before that. We had our photos taken, forms signed, and we prepared ourselves by writing opening speeches, notes, and resolutions on different topics. The conference itself was a culmination of a lobbying session where delegates got to share their country’s points of view on different issues and make resolutions together, and the conference itself where we debated upon the resolution and its amendments passing or failing.

Somethings that stood out to me was how complicated and long formal procedures are in the UN. From this MUN experience to Lisbon, I have learned more about several countries and their relations, made new friends, spent time with some of my old friends, and explored a country that I have never before visited. -By: Atharv Kashyap

Grade 5 students had an opportunity to join the Middle School EV3 Lego Mindstorms After School Activity this year at ISD.

Why robotics?

As well as exemplifying technology directly by programming the robot, ISD students also began to learn about science, engineering and maths and developing an understanding of how these subjects link together.

Will the skills taught and learned in this ASA be useful in “real life” applications?

There’s no doubt there will be a need for people to be involved in programming mechanical devices in the foreseeable future. The drone industry has taken off. According to The Economist, more than 15,000 drones are being sold in the US each month. By programming robots, ISD students can discover if they have aptitude and interest in a job market of the future.

What is the purpose of robotics and coding?

Coding is essentially written instructions that a robot can read and then execute. ISD students determined the task they wanted to complete through a robot, designed the code to make it happen, and then sent it to the robot to view the outcome.

SERVICE LEARNING CAS & Service as Action Service Learning is a core element of the ISD IB curriculum that is designed to extend student learning beyond the classroom. The aim of our Service Learning programs is to help students become active and caring members of our community and demonstrate commitment to personal growth and to the needs of others.

THESPIAN TROUPE This years thespians team: Zane Cameron, Quincy Loria, Rachel McCollaum, Alex O’Connell Collins, Yasmeen Moustafa, Jassim Zoobi, Sally Ka, Flora Cerabino-Hess, Issaka Van’t Hul, Nicholas Ori, Ryan Lennon, Will Cartlidge, Mimi Younger, Sydney Loria, N’aani Sanon, Caleb Tan, Hakim Mravilli, and Abigail Davis.

Flying and Soaring Thespian Society Troupe 8507 is not a girl scout group that’s going to come to your door selling cookies. This troupe is a group of ISD High School students who have one special thing in common: They are all avid supporters of Arts: Acting, singing, dancing playing instruments, etc. Think of High School Musical (but the first one, not the second or third because they just did it for the money). Troupe 8507 started at ISD three years ago and has grown to a robust 20 members. You can find these students raising money for events, shining as stars on stage, serving as ushers and running concession stands for shows. Some also choreograph dances and take younger students under their wing in order to help them hone their craft.

In order to be a Thespian you need to have a certain number of hours on stage, back stage or behind the scenes of various theatrical productions. Come channel your inner Troy and Gabriela and be part of Troupe 8507 next year, because after all aren’t we just all in this together?

​ ur Service Learning program is a collaborative O and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need. Service projects and experiences are one of the most transforming element in the IB programs. They nurture and mold the global citizen. Service involves interaction, such as the building of links with individuals or groups in the community. The community may be the school, the local community, or it may exist on national and international levels.

Service as Action (SA) | IB MYP The ISD Service as Action (SA) program builds on the MYP SA program for Grades 6 to 10 and prepares students for the CAS requirements of the IB Diploma Program. With guidance and support from the school, MYP students should meet the learning outcomes set to develop the skills and attributes of an IB Learner. Students must meet learning outcomes set by the IB, and have the freedom to develop their own goals and activities for SA within the school’s SA framework.

Direct service: Student interaction involves people, the environment or animals; Indirect service: Students do not see the recipients of indirect service, but have verified their actions will benefit the community or environment; Advocacy: Students speak on behalf of a cause or concern to promote action on an issue of public interest; Research: Students collect information through varied sources,analyze data, and report on a topic of importance to influence policy or practice.

CAS is the IB requirement that all Diploma Candidates propose, participate, and document extracurricular experiences in Creativity, Activity and Service.

The aim of CREATIVITY in the CAS program is to encourage and nurture students’ innate creativity and imagination so that these abilities are developed towards their full potential. Students are encouraged to choose activities from different fields of creative arts and crafts and include in their CAS both activities that develop their areas of expertise further and areas that they are less familiar with. This strand of CAS is interpreted as imaginatively as possible to cover a wide range of arts and other activities outside the normal curriculum.

The ACTIVITY strand should be interpreted as physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle. It also includes developing a life-long habit of a physically and socially active lifestyle. Through activity students are encouraged to practice sports and consider the benefits of healthy living not only for physical but also mental, social and emotional well-being. This aspect of CAS can include participation in expeditions, individual and team sports, and physical activities outside the normal curriculum; it also includes physical activity involved in carrying out creative and service projects.

The last strand of CAS is the SERVICE component as it was previously described in the general description and the Service as Action description. Creativity and activity can be enhanced by incorporating the service component.

If students are involved in arts and in physical activities, they might consider coaching younger children, seniors in residential homes, homeless children, etc.

Athletics are a key component to creating a balanced, adventurous student body. At ISD, a majority of secondary 49 // 131 students participate in athletics as members of one or more of our sports teams. This fosters a sense of community and sportsmanship in our school and encourages students to work together even after the final bell rings.

ISD follows a three-season schedule with each season lasting 10 to 12 weeks. Just like our student body, our coaches represent a diverse cross-section of our teaching staff and our local community. Our local seasons are defined by matches with schools and clubs from around Dakar and a few trips within Senegal to challenge ourselves against the best athletes in the country.

Internationally, our school is a member of the West African International Schools Activities League (WAISAL). This school year was highlighted by a number of successful WAISAL experiences, including hosting the WAISAL High School Basketball Tournament in February. WAISAL is another way for our school to embrace internationalism and help provide our students with the opportunities they need to grow and develop as learners.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

WAISAL High School Basketball 2020 WAISAL High School Basketball was an unqualified success! Eight boys teams and six girls teams competed over the course of three activity-filled days. In the end, the winners were awarded, all tournament teams were selected, but these traditional markers of success fall short of capturing the full scope of this tournament’s impact.

The extended ISD community stepped up to host this event on short notice. This truly was a community event. 30+ host families opened their doors to students from around the region.

Another 15 ISD staff members hosted coaches and Athletic Directors for the duration of the event. As well, we had the tremendous support

of more than 30 student volunteers who took part in the planning and execution of the tournament.

These students served as score keepers, photographers, live stream commentators, fruit vendors, and general problem solvers.

Special thanks and acknowledgement should go out to the ISD Dance Team who provided breathtaking performances throughout the tournament. Their dedication and commitment as athletes and artists is unrivaled.

We truly have a world class dance program and WAISAL High School Basketball served as the perfect stage for their considerable talents.

VOLLEYBALL The varsity boys volleyball season came and went in the blink of an eye. As a volleyball program, we want to inspire young people towards excellence, effort, and positive relationships.

SOCCER You have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it.

The student-athletes excelled on and off the court this season, ending with an incredible overall season.

When we travelled for WAISAL, we ended up losing a close battle in the finals, but came away with the Sportsmanship award. This tournament was special to me, as it would be the last time I get to coach the boys varsity team as I move on to Beijing, China the next school year.

As a coach, seeing these athletes as individuals and getting to know them truly inspires one to work hard during practice. It is my hope that these athletes remember the memories and life skills we were able to create together. I know without a doubt that each one of these boys will change the world, if they put their mind to it.

Rewarding, proud and inspiring are all words that come to mind when we look back at the 2019 August to November swimming season. We had an outstanding turn out of about 75 swimmers from grades four to twelve. Representing the Senegal colors, the red team was made up of students in eighth to twelfth grade, the yellow team was fourth to seventh grade and the green team was the beginning swimming team squad.

The swimmers showed their dedication by showing up to 6:30 AM morning practice before the sun came up and came early to warm-up with some dryland training before we could enter the pool area at 4:00 PM. In preparation for the Waisal swim meet in Cote d’Ivoire we had a number of inter-squad swim meets and a biathlon(swim-run) event and a duathlon (run-swim-run) event.

One of our proudest moments during the season came during the final swim meet when 100% of the swimmers that traveled for the competition all scored points to contribute to our final score. Competing against six other Waisal schools we were ecstatic to take home second place in the final swim meet of the season. The Jaguars nerves were high as many of the swimmers were competing in their first big swim meet of their life and the veterans had goal times to beat. With an outstanding team camaraderie, the best cheering tent of all and the determination to do their best, the swimmers stepped up and represent ISD and themselves very well. The coaching staff (Ms. KK, Ms. Jessie, Ms. Lindsey, Ms. Radcliff, Ms. Dwyer and Mr. Regan) were inspired by the swimmers work ethic and commitment level throughout the season and would like to thank them for their driven enthusiasm and the parents support. We are looking forward to the 2020 swim season and hope to have more swimmers come out next year.

CROSS COUNTRY “Why do you run?” This is a question that I asked several of the cross-country runners over the course of the 201920 school year. Here are some of the responses I got.

“It makes me feel happy.”

“It clears my mind.”

“It gives me energy throughout the day.”

“I’ve never ran before so I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could do it. It was hard but I learned that I CAN do it!”

“It’s hard to wake up to come, but once I do it makes me feel better all day. I never regret coming to run.”

In its second year as a sport at ISD, we saw an increase in participants, and very importantly an increase in female runners! We had two races in the first half of the year, one being a 5km race, the other being the Tour du Lac Rose, which is a 13km race. 11th grade students Joshua Bruns and Kasimir von Klitzing took second and third place in the Junior male division of this highly competitive race. Even when we transitioned to online learning our jaguar runners managed to keep running and to keep our running community connected virtually through sharing posts and pictures from their runs from various spots around the world. -Mary Giuliani

Our Elementary School begins with PreK-3 and culminates in Grade 5. We have one PreK-3 class and one PreK-4 class, © ISD-YEARBOOK 2018/2019 58 // 131

each have around 20 students. We have two sections of Kindergarten that we strive to keep between 15-20 students 59 // 131 each. Grades 1- 5 offer 3 sections at each level with a maximum number of 20 students per class. ISD continues to

experience unprecedented growth. We recently expanded our campus to include an Early Learning Center with its own playground, designed for the enjoyment of our youngest students. As we grow, we are dedicated to maintaining a strong sense community. We are blessed with an amazing Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Our entire community comes together for concerts, exhibitions, assemblies and many festivals. It seems that something beautiful and prolific is always in the works on campus.

Our academic program is aligned with the ISD guiding principles and is founded in student-centered, inquiry-based, processed focused exploration. To this end, we embody the standards and practices of the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) which we are now authorized to offer. Our units of Inquiry are designed under six social studies and science based themes. Language Arts, Math and Specialist subjects are woven into unit design in order to generate “transdisciplinary” experiences for the students. Our K-5 school day is enhanced by regular classes in Art, Music, and Physical Education.

Children also explore and utilize various aspects of technology in all subject areas. The ISD Library provides support for classroom research and maintains an excellent collection of children’s literature. In addition our K-5 students participate in daily French classes. The French department supports all phases of language learning from beginning to Francofone.​ ISD sponsors a yearlong After School Activities (ASA) program. This program provides extended structured activities for our student population. There is a list of programs to choose from each trimester. Older Elementary students may also compete in basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming and track. Some students travel to represent ISD in athletic tournaments in neighboring countries via the West African International Schools Activities League (WAISAL).

Welcome to PreK 3, my name is Ms Cathy and I am teaching PreK 3 class of 2019-20 together with Ms Evelyne. We have a diverse, multicultural group of 16 students coming from 13 countries. The PreK 3 program is play based because play is such a crucial part of learning in young children. Young students are naturally motivated to play therefore with that in mind, I use play as context of learning. Throughout the day the students are exploring, experimenting, discovering and solving problems in playful ways. This year the students will be inquiring into their five senses, shapes and colors, family histories and their communities. They will also be engaged in literacy and numeracy development. My goal is to offer my students authentic opportunities to be thoughtful, creative, open minded, caring and curious learners.

Welcome and Bienvenue to PK 4, 201920. A team of teachers, Ms Linda, Ms K, Ms Claire and Ms Chido are teaching 24 beautiful students from 14 countries who speak 10 different languages. In PK 4, students learn through play-based IB PYP curriculum.

They are given ample opportunities to learn at a greater depth through games and hands-on activities. Students are encouraged to take risks, explore and learn various skills throughout the day. Literacy and Numeracy skills are developed as an integral part of Unit of Inquiry.

Students learn about each other’s culture to identify similarities and differences, to express their emotions and feelings, to learn about different types of animals and plants and their needs to survive in their habitat. They also learn about different buildings and their uses.

1-D Class Community is an active curious group of students that love to learn and discover new things each and every day. We have strong values in showing kindness to others, taking risks, and most importantly having fun learning.

We love doing experiments like making the best bubble mix, observing what happens to baking soda and vinegar and mixing mentos with soda. We have strong creativity skills and enjoy building towers, painting, drawing and writing silly stories. As a teacher, I hope my first graders continue to be life-long inquisitive, caring, open-minded community members that lift each other up.

The 1R Class Community is one full of fun, laughter, new adventures, questions, choices, friendship and kindness. We are made up of 21 students and 2 teachers from over 22 different countries. We are all different and we like it that way because we learn from one another and have new experiences.

Our favorite author and illustrator is Mo Willems and we even got to write a book just like him. We love using our Dojo points on stuffed friends and iPads.

We love asking questions and researching to learn more information. We are amazing readers who are constantly building our stamina to read for even longer. We are quick to say thank you and sorry. We give the best hugs. I want my first graders to grow up to be kind adults who want to help others. I want them to work hard with all their might. I want them to keep asking questions to deepen their knowledge.

I want them to know they are loved and will always have a place at ISD and in Dakar no matter where in this world life takes them. I love your joy and zest for life- don’t ever lose it!

We are a wonderful group of first graders who work together in the Tan Treehouse with Ms. Workman-Tan and Ms. Patricia. In first grade we learn a lot about being responsible and how to work together as a community. We each have jobs to help out in our community.

We also learn how to be good inquirers and how to ask the kinds of questions that will help us to learn more. At the beginning of this school year we learned how to “do unto otters as you’d like otters to do unto you”! Our class mascot Ottie the Otter helped us to learn this lesson. Grade 1 is a fun year where we investigate healthy habits, personal histories, living things, and many more interesting things.

Hello, we are Grade 2A! We are 19 energetic and internationally diverse students, plus two teachers, Miss Francesca and Miss Linda.

We strongly believe that our differences make us stronger world citizens and help us create unique learning experiences. Everyday we have the opportunity to share and compare our ideas and values, learning how to grow following the ten IB learner profile traits.

If you come to our classroom, you will see chatty and happy children engaged in their learning. We go from spelling to world monuments, from addition to the human body, from writing to animal habitats. We all make mistakes, teachers included, and we are proud of that because it means we are expanding our knowledge.

Class 2C is a vibrant and energetic group of 19 students and two teachers.

There is never a dull moment in class 2C and we are constantly inquiring and training ourselves to become better learners and citizens.

Like any successful community, our class community believes in democracy and cooperation. We started the year with an inquiry about making good choices and the consequences thereof. Considering our class belief this was a good choice for our unit. The students developed an awareness of how a responsible choice had positive effects on them and their community. Going further in the year we intend to be able to define more deeply, how the roles, we choose, contribute to our community.

As a teacher, I believe that the most important objective for the class is to be able to understand,why they do what they do and I hope to instill in them the ability to see how they can use their learning to make the world a better place.

Class 2S is a very creative place to be. We are constantly busy sharing our unique ideas, interests and talents with each other in order to connect with our PYP units of inquiry. For example, 2S students are creating a class atlas with different countries. Students are describing where they’re chosen country is located, what it’s like there, the different regions, the waterways that move through, and how people connect with their environment.

Using the world atlas, students are learning to read maps with corresponding keys, and are becoming experts in the field of geography. For 2S students, the world has become more like home!

3K features 11 returning students and five who are new to the ISD family this year. Seven girls and nine boys, all working together to create the best learning environment possible for themselves and each other. Our year began with a unit all about developing a growth mindset and creating an environment that accommodates us in the different learning we’ll do throughout the year.

The students even contributed their ideas to the reconstruction of our elementary playground. Other units will see us working with extreme weather and climate change, poetry, mapping, and environmental stewardship. Within these cross-curricular units we’ll be planting trees, writing songs, charting weather, and connecting with other schools internationally. We’ll go on field trips to take our learning outside of the classroom, including a trip to the Museum of Black Civilizations.

Mr. Klassen, Ms. Asiya, and Ms. Isabella are all working with the students to help develop a sense of community and togetherness. Students are thinking creatively to solve problems, working alone to develop independence and self-confidence, and collaborating in groups to improve cooperation skills.

We’re also playing plenty of math games, learning new strategies, and solving practical problems with mathematical thinking.

3L is made up of a wonderful group of inquirers - ready to explore their world in many ways. They are scientists, mathematicians, artists, inventors and passionate writers. They are also avid readers who love learning through information books, as well as responding to a great fiction story. Coming from 14 countries and speaking 12 languages, this group is very globally minded and aware of their responsibility for caring for the planet. They are action-oriented and ready to make a difference!

Our year together has been spent creating and doing! During Our How Organize Ourselves unit of inquiry they used the Design Process to redesign our classroom learning environment and to present plans to help improve the ISD playground.

We have focused on having a Growth Mindset and “Can Do” attitude as we discover Who We Are. We learned about severe weather and how our choices impact global warming in our How the World Works unit. We also made connections when planting trees and focusing on deforestation during our Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry. We have explored poetry, drama, fables and music, while showing our creativity in How We Express Ourselves. Our Where We Are in Place and Time unit of inquiry led us to create treasure maps and to be able to orientate ourselves with newly learned map skills and the use of tech tools. The focus all year was on encouraging the children to feel confident and to find joy in all they do, while knowing they have the power to change the world. We ended the year by venturing into distance learning which offered us all new challenges, but our class community stayed connected and the children stepped up to the challenge. Most importantly, I am most proud of how kind and caring this class is and how they have worked together and collaborated so well, while sharing their thinking in multiple ways.

Meet 3N. We are a diverse group of 8 and 9 year olds from all over the world.

We have come together to learn - to learn about ourselves, to learn about others, to learn about the world. We have a lot of goals this year. We hope to become more reflective, to grow as communicators, to learn to collaborate, and to make our thinking visible. However, more than anything, we hope to have fun. We know that all of the enthusiasm we have for learning and doing new things will help us grow.

Highlights of our year: • Designing a new playground and persuading Ms. D to use our ideas • Becoming experts on severe weather events and presenting at our weather conference.

• Planting trees, nurturing them throughout the year, and replanting them locally to fight climate change.

• Writing our own songs - lyrics and music!

• Designing our own inquiries so that we can learn more about how we learn.

We decided that in order to accomplish everything that we wanted to accomplish this year we needed to have some essential agreements. So at the beginning of the year, we brainstormed, discussed, compromised, and finally decided we needed to…

4B is a diverse group of happy, friendly, inquisitive kids. We start every morning by singing songs on the carpet and this sets the tone for our day together. I hope that years from now my students will still remember and sing our songs!

Our class is full of engaged readers, writers, and mathematicians. Students read widely across genres and share their thinking about books daily. They also love to write, revise, and share their work and are upset when our workshop time is over. 4B is full of diligent problem solvers who work to find patterns and make their mathematical thinking visible.

We began our year inquiring into the brain and how it changes when we learn.

This was a great place to start, because understanding that they can affect their brains’ growth has helped students set goals for their own learning this year.

We have a lot of exciting learning ahead of us, including inquiries into animal adaptations for survival, how governments vary and provide for different wants and needs, and the relationship between geography and the development of cultures around the world. Finally, we will inquire into how artistic impression can lead to change, and the importance of water as a resource in the world. My hope is that students will remember their fourth-grade year as full of fun and growth. In the words of our favorite song, “We’re a green and growing family tree” here in 4B.

We are a diverse, multicultural group of inquirers coming to ISD from all over the world. Students have been involved in a multitude of activities throughout the year that have provoked natural and thoughtful inquiry.

This year the students are inquiring into how learning impacts brain development, animal adaptation, governmental systems, geography, natural resources and creative expression. They have also been engaged in reading, writing and numeracy development. Students in 4DN have worked hard to become thoughtful, creative, open-minded, caring and curious learners.

4-O is a curious group of students from all over the world. We strive to support each other, do our best, learn from our mistakes, and have fun. This year, we will be inquiring into various different concepts.

Some of the Highlights are: • In October and November, we will learn about animal adaptations and the students will “discover” their own animals that they will make out of recycled materials. They will clearly explain the structures and functions that allow this animal to survive in its environment.

• In the beginning of 2020, we will go on an overnight field trip to JoalFadiouth where the students will learn all about the way in which the geography of that area has shaped the culture of the people who live there.

This will be the provocation for our Unit of Inquiry about how geography shapes culture. The students will then reflect on their own cultures and learn about others in order to make connections between these cultures and the geography of the place in which the people live.

As a teacher, I hope to instill a growth mindset in my students. We have begun the year learning about the brain and how it changes, discussing how to support our brains and our learning. With this idea of growth mindset, we are also striving to become independent learners who are able to take risks with our learning. Most importantly, I hope to instill in my students the importance of being kind. We read the book Wonder together as a class in which the idea of “choosing kind” plays a big role.

Committed, caring, balanced, perseverance, investigative, descriptive, brave, tolerant, thinker, independent, respectful, open-minded, knowledgeable, principled, courageous, enthusiastic, curious and motivated are just some of the words to describe the learners in Grade 5B. It has been a learning journey, full of reflection, achievements, personal discoveries and learning from our passions and interests. Along the way, they developed skills to be inquirers, independent learners, critical thinkers as well as working on cooperation and collaboration abilities. They did all this while maintaining a healthy appetite for competition.

Who can describe our classroom better than the students themselves? This is their impression. They wrote it as a team, and spontaneously chose to connect it to the learning profiles (like Open-minded, Caring, and Risk-taker) that go with our PYP inquiry program.

Our classroom is an absolutely wonderful environment to be in. Everybody is very considerate, and everybody respects one another. Our classroom is also really big when it comes to character. We have a class full of caring and principled people, although we make mistakes sometimes. We try our best on the work we do, we learn from our mistakes. We always try to study hard and at the same time have lots of fun. Our classroom is also very open-minded, we do not mind if girls and boys work together.

Together we are a Bunch of Crazy Kids, we have a wonderful, crazy teacher who leads our clan of crazy people. We play lots of fun games that promote our learning and make it more interesting.

We are a very goofy bunch. For example, sometimes we say we take risks when we get our Chromebooks, because there are polar bears in the back-storage room where the Chromebook are. Zeiad, Issa make people laugh by stealing wobbly chairs. We also have kids that spill paper scraps all over the place. So, we are certainly not angels, but it’s awesome not being one.

That is a very honest assessment. The students also agreed on a class motto.

They worded it like this: Once a crazy bunch, always a crazy bunch!

We are an inquisitive group of fifth graders who work together in Mr. S dynamic class with Ms. Niassa and Abdoulaye. In fifth grade we learn a lot about making our learner profiles come to life in class resulting in a community of diverse cooperative thinkers. We also learn how to be deep inquirers, asking the burning questions that will help us reveal more.

At the beginning of this school year we learned “Who We Are” and are now exploring how to “Share Our Planet”! Grade 5 is a triumphant year where we ‘exhibit’ diverse resource management, circles of perspectives, science in our universe, how we organize ourselves in order to make changes, and many more interesting things.

Middle School at ISD is an experience unlike none other. Grades 6, 7, and 8 is the place where you can be a 99 part of // 131

Houses just like the ones at Hogwarts. And it is just as magical. There is no Quidditch but competitions known as the “Minute to Win It” abound. Then ask any Middle School student about the swanky outdoor “lounge” they have on the fourth floor, or the dunes, mangroves, and old town Senegal they get to explore during Week Without Walls. Magical.

This is also where the transition from PYP to MYP happens.

Students make their way through educational journeys where the “trip taken” is sometimes more rewarding than the actual “destination”. This is where the magic happens. The “thinking magic” where whimsical discussions take place surrounding things like math, where the important thing is learning different ways to solve problems, or Language Arts where you read the same story but get to interpret it in ways that are personal to your own cultural experiences.

You also get a chance to experience the magic of competition. WAISAL offers you the opportunity to play a variety of sports, concerts and show your mathematical ability against schools in different countries. Like getting on Aladdin’s magic carpet... only this one is real.

Victoria Alexandra O’Connell Collins Dear Janina, You are our only, beloved daughter, Nr. 2 of three, our princess. You amaze me, almost every day. Despite our nomadic life, you are well grounded, a calm, very mature and somehow unbelievably cool person who can hardly be thrown off the track. You know what is right and wrong, and you have a fine sense of justice that guides you through life. You are a very tolerant person, letting others live their lives even if their beliefs do not correspond to your own. Live and let live is what you believe in. But when it is important, you will speak up. I wish you would do so more often, that you would take the lead more often. The world needs people like you! Sometimes your coolness gets mistaken for a lack of ambition.

How often have teachers told you to make more of an effort. And I remember vividly a snowboard race, your Dad shouting at you: “Janina, this is a race!”

You came first, but it looked effortless.

Same in swimming, skiing: fast and looking effortless. Everything you do looks cool, relaxed, chilled. I know that this is not always the case, that you are sometimes giving your best where others think there still is a much unexploited potential. Yes, there still is. And I am so curious how you will develop and where life will take you to. We love you dearly, daughter. Congratulations for you IB, and all the very best for the next stage in life!

Dear Josie – You’ve grown into such a responsible and wise young woman.

NEWS FROM THE ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES The 2019-2020 school year will always be one to remember! The Board of Trustees hit the ground running with very ambitious goals to support the school’s exceptional growth and steady achievements in academic performance. With the school opening in August 2019, over 700 students walked onto campus. On a strategic level, our focus has been to continue laying the groundwork for current and future school improvements in order to meet the changing needs of our students and school community. This led to advancement in the evaluation of our strategic plan and ensuring the long-term financial health of the school. For better integration of the many new community members who have joined ISD within a relatively short timeframe and to maintain the culture as well as the cohesion of our community, we immediately set up an ad hoc inclusion and diversity committee with the mission to ensure each individual feels respected, included and connected at ISD. The Board of Trustees has also worked hard over the course of this year in overseeing ISD’s facilities to meet the high standards of our current and future programs. We, trustees, were hoping to celebrate our 2020 graduation class in the new Performing Arts Center and were overseeing the progress of the school’s many other projects such as the building of an innovation center, the gymnasium, the expansion of the swimming pool, etc. when like so many others around the world, we were brutally hit by the COVID 19 pandemic. Overnight we’ve seen some of our community dispersed across several continents and forced to adapt to a radically disrupted lifestyle. Classes for most students in the world have gone online and activities making schools the center of so many lives have all halted. Despite the hardships, ISD can rely on its solid fundamentals and a strong capacity for resilience to come out of this crisis stronger than ever. The Board of Trustees has high expectations for our school and is convinced that it will keep on reinventing itself to support the growth of our students into achieving and fulfilled global citizens. Congratulations to all the 2020 high school graduates. May you come out a stronger person in the face of these challenges and our best wishes to the ISD community.

Super Hero Field Day this year was a great success, bringing much joy and happiness to all. Every child was equipped with their very own field day shirt, helping them feel as part of a team.

Students participated in 10 stations, watched some of their classmates put on an amazing dance, catch balls launched hundreds of feet in the air, and competed in a friendly tug-o-war game.

All teams fought hard, but the green team came out on top in the end!

A big thank you to everyone who helped make Super Hero Field DAY 2020 a roaring success! Until next time!
