INTRODUCTION A New Year, a New You -

Our Mission

A New Year’s resolution is a tradition talked about at the beginning of the New Year. A promise you make to yourself to do something different. We’d like to challenge you with a New Year’s resolution that should be easy to keep. Try something new! We have just the thing to help you get started and it’s in this book!

Find out if wood crafts are for you by making a wood flower basket hanger at our NEW class hosted by MMG² (page 17) or find out if you have an ear for music with guitar lessons (page 15). If you are wanting to work on a healthier you, take advantage of our walking club which is offered all school year at Lake Ripley Elementary (page 20) or switch up dinner with some of our unique food classes (page 16).

We are excited to offer a FREE fishing experience for senior citizens courtesy of the Litchfield Student Anglers Club (page 22). Looking to keep active? Try your hand at Pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports in the United States (page 21). If your New Year’s resolution is more time for yourself, join us on one of our day trips (page 23) where we take care of the planning and driving.

When it comes to kids, they need to explore and discover! Help them find something they truly enjoy.

Do they have a passion for cooking? Register them for our NEW class “Basic Breakfast Delights” (page 9).

Have they expressed an interest in science? Register them for the “Radical Robots” class (page 8)! Maybe swimming is their talent and they don’t know it yet. Try our Drippin’ Dragons swim program (page 14)! We can’t forget those little ones and the ones that are new to the world. Let’s start their journey off with fun and learning at our Early Childhood Family Education classes (pages 6 & 7).

Community Education is here to provide fun opportunities and lifelong learning from the time you are born until your learning journey ends. So open up this guide and find something new to try and have a Happy New Year from all of us at the office!

Dragon Kids Club offers a professional and caring staff, a variety of enrichment programs, engaging recreational choices including large motor activity, outdoor play, large and small group games and field trips. Join us for some fun at Kids Club this school year!

Wee Dragon Kids Club offers wrap around child care for preschool students (ages 3-5), who are enrolled in any preschool program within the Wagner Education Building. We serve breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. We make it simple for your child to get to and from their preschool class throughout the day and offer a fun and enriched program while your child is in our care.

Litchfield Public Schools Preschool is an on-site, all early childhood service combined in the pre-k-grade 3 continuum with Lake Ripley School. We have early childhood licensed teachers and use curriculum and assessment tools approved by the Department of Education and we have beautiful facilities for learning that include a playground and gymnasium.

Registration OPEN for Fall 2019!

Families may pick up registration forms from Community Education. To reserve a space for the 2019-2020 preschool year, a completed registration form must be turned in along with payment for the registration fee. Spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. All children must be at least 3½ years old on or before August 31, 2019. Children must be fully potty-trained to participate in preschool. Scholarships are available to families who qualify for free and/or reduced lunch. Scholarships are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Early Childhood Screening 2019 Litchfield Public Schools Early Childhood Screening is a service offered to families with children ages 3-5 years old. It is a chance to see if a child is achieving the developmental milestones of early childhood.

During the screening process, early childhood staff along with the school nurse will check your child’s: - Health history & immunization records - Vision & hearing - Height, weight & growth - Large & small motor skills - Thinking, language & communication skills - Social & emotional development

What do I do if I have a child younger than three that I have concerns about?

While all children grow and change at their own rate you may have concerns that your child is developing differently than other infants or toddlers at the same age.

If you have concerns you can call 1-866-693-GROW (4769) Once a referral is made to the local early learning intervention program where you reside, you will be contacted to arrange a FREE screening to determine if your child is eligible for FREE, Help Me Grow, infant and toddler intervention services.

This program is funded in part through the MN Department of Education and MN Department of Human Services

Screening gives parents an opportunity to secure support for their children who might need help in reaching those milestones. The school district is required to offer Early Childhood Screening for ALL children prior to entering kindergarten in the state of Minnesota.

If your child is on the school district census, he/she will be notified about Early Childhood Screening close to age 3½ years.

If you’re new to ECFE, your first session is FREE!

Need child or sibling care?

ECFE offers child care for some classes. Fees are kept at a minimal expense to families. You must register siblings who will need child care when you register for ECFE classes. Sibling Care has room for only 8 children in each section and is granted on a first come-first served basis. Register early!

Daycare students are accepted after all families in a given class have registered their family child care needs. All sibling care is at a fixed rate per family per ECFE session. Due to limited budgets and in order to keep this part of the program in operation, it must be cost effective. There must be a minimum of two families registered for each section of sibling care to avoid cancellation.

EARLY CHILDHOOD Families in the Woods

For families with children birth-grade 3 “Building Blocks for Family and School Success” Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten. The program is offered through Minnesota public school districts.

Let’s Dance! Jazz, ballet and high kick skills will be learned at each age appropriate level using teamwork, rhythm and coordination while building self-esteem.

Participants will be creating a fun and unique dance routine to showcase for family and friends at the end of the program. Registration deadline: 2/26

Let’s Dance! Join us for our first annual Dance Camp.

You will build self-esteem and confidence while learning jazz and high kick skills at age appropriate skill levels using rhythm and coordination. A high school dance team member will teach you a fun routine that you will perform at a girl’s high school basketball game! Operate different model robots that use a variety of sensory devices, such as infrared, sound or light detection. Operate a robot with six legs or one with wheels and command a robot to navigate an obstacle course. Try out a robotic arm and build your own Mechano-Hand to take home.

Would you like to learn how to sew but don't know how to get started? This class will cover how to get started, sewing terms, what supplies you need, how to read a pattern, how to wind a bobbin and how to thread your sewing machine. We will be making a small bag.

Dave Whitchurch Are you motivated and excited to improve your drawing skills? Drawing drills, activities, study of line will all be part of this course. Mr. Whitchurch has been a teacher and coach in the Litchfield School District for 34 years.

He has designed the Dribblin’ Dragon logo for years! He has a concentration in art from Bemidji State University, and has drawn as a hobby for a lifetime. Come enjoy some fun with a talented group of kids that love drawing!

There is a need for trained therapy dogs in our rural area! Do you think you and your dog would make a good therapy dog team? Do you want to learn what it takes to become a therapy dog team? Pat will give you information on the training and requirements needed to become a therapy dog team. She will explain the differences between therapy dogs, companion animals and service dogs. As an added bonus, Pat will also give you information on the requirements needed to become a Canine Good Citizen! This class is for dog owners only. Get to know your instructors!

Holly McGraw began dancing with her high school dance team at Renville County West. She is married with 3 children and has

lived in the area for 22 years. Holly has worked as a special needs professional and high school dance team coach in the Litchfield School District for 21 years. She began teaching community education Dancin’ Dragons in 2010. Holly has retired from coaching high school dance team, but continues to share her love of dance with children from age 3 through grade 6. Some of her favorite things about teaching dance is seeing the progress from week-by-week, along with the smiles, laughter, and excitement each dancer expresses during class.

Chris Schlueter is a woman of many trades! She has been a master gardener for 14 years and is on the farmers market board. She has a cooking show on a local TV network, HCVN, in Hutchinson, she writes for local newspapers about gardening and shares recipes. She has been teaching community education classes for over 19 years. When she’s not cooking, writing, reading or crafting, she squeezes in travel time to see her grandchildren and just traveled to Italy for an entire month where she gained cooking inspiration and enjoyed every possible touristy spot. ASA Girls Fast Pitch Softball 10U-18U This is a program for girls who wish to play competitive fast pitch this summer. The season will run from May through July. Scott Lund started teaching Tae Kwon Do as an assistant instructor for Crow River Martial Arts at the Hutchinson Dojang. In 2003, Scott received his Tae Kwon Do Instructor Certification from Senior Grand Master Hee Sang Ro and started teaching Tae Kwon Do through community education in Winthrop and in 2005 started teaching in Litchfield. He purchased Crow River Martial Arts in 2008 from his first instructor, Mr. Campa and ran classes in Hutchinson, Winthrop and Litchfield. His current instructor is Senior Grand Master Hee Sang Ro, who’s father was one of the original 5 founders of modern Tae Kwon Do. Scott has his 4 th degree Black Belt in Song Moo Tae Kwon Do, 3 rd degree Black Belt from the Kukkiwon in South Korea and also had training in Jiu Jitsu. In addition, Scott’s wife, daughter and son all have Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do.

Walker Art Museum Grades K+

Snow tubing requires no special skill or equipment, only warm clothes and a desire to have fun! Powder Ridge will supply the tubes and you supply the laughs, screams and smiles! The Powder Ridge tube conveyor is a system that you stand on with your tube and enjoy a leisurely ride to the top of the hill. Upon returning to the WEB you’ll warm up with activities and a special snack! Participants need to bring a bag lunch and water bottle. An afternoon snack will be provided.

Dive into the world of art with us at the Walker Art Museum in Minneapolis, one of the most-visited modern and contemporary art museums in the United States. We’ll start the day with a walk through the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, admiring the more than 40 works of art from the Walker Art Center’s collections, including Minnesota’s iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry.

We’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the “5 Ways In” collection on a guided tour and then take part in a hands-on Art Lab experience. Students will “...experiment with media, techniques, and concepts of contemporary art that connect to themes encountered during the guided tour.”

Participants need to bring a bag lunch and water bottle. An afternoon snack will be provided.

The Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Class (WSI) will certify you to teach all levels of Red Cross Swimming lessons to children, adults and individuals with special needs. This 30-hour course consists of pool and classroom time. Through video and hands-on skill building, in and out of the water, this course is designed to train instructors to use a variety of teaching strategies, including: class management techniques, lesson planning and execution, observation and assessment, and new tools to be a great instructor. Coursework must be downloaded and viewable on a technology device, brought to class. Participants must be 16 years old by the final day of the course. A preliminary swimming skills pretest will follow the informational meeting where course details are explained and dates completely finalized. Please bring suit, goggles and towel.

The purpose of this class is to teach students the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork and the skills you will need to work as a professional lifeguard. Included in the class are: rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid, CPR/AED training and Blood Borne Pathogen Training.

The course is a “blended learning” opportunity. The format allows participants to complete a portion of the course independently, online, cutting down on in-person meeting time! Participants spend 7-8 hours of online course content with an additional 25 hours at the pool and in the classroom. Attendance is mandatory for all sessions.

Wikipedia says that “contract bridge, or simply, bridge, is a trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. In its basic format, it is played by 4 players in 2 competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table.” If you have ever wanted to learn, or perhaps re-learn, this traditional card game, now is the time to do it. Get to know your instructors!

David Stottrup first became enamored with the acoustic guitar back in the ‘50’s, when he was 8 or 9, while listening to “Renfro Valley Roundup” which came out of Kentucky. The playing style was that of the Carter family, unadorned. In 1958, when he was a junior in high school, David looked longingly at a guitar in the Sears Roebuck wish book that cost $13.00. That Christmas, it was under the tree. It came in a triangular card box for a case and included a little booklet entitled “Learn the guitar in five easy minutes.” He knew no one in his town of 400 people who played guitar. There were no “YouTube’s”, but he had learned something about notes and rhythm from being in the high school band. The first songs he taught himself were “Wildwood Flower” and “I Walk the Line”. He loved folk music of the 1960’s and learned by playing guitar with other guitar players who were better than him. He will always be grateful for that $13.00 guitar under the Christmas tree back in 1958.

Mary Peltier has been playing Bridge since the 1960’s! Mary and her husband Bill moved to Litchfield in 1969. She worked at Woodland Centers and for the Litchfield Public School System as a social worker for 17 years. She and Bill have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren. Mary is a member of several Bridge clubs. She loves the game and considers it a fun challenge as well as a great social activity, getting together with others to enjoy the game of Bridge.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS Special Olympics Unified Sports combine athletes with and without disabilities on the same team. By participating together, athletes and Unified Partners improve their physical fitness, sharpen their skills, challenge the competition and encourage teamwork. Learn new skills and meet new people. Athletes will attend area competitions when possible.

Unified Track and Field

Coaches Whitney Lind, Rick Alma & Susan Alstrom Special Olympics Unified Sports combine athletes with and without disabilities on the same team. Track and Field has specific events for all ability levels. There is something for everyone and the fun of being together adds such joy to the lives of athletes, volunteers, and coaches alike! We will be competing in Region 6 Area Competition in Hutchinson.

Unified Basketball Join us! Our team, Litchfield Dragon Spitfire, gives students and adults, with and without disabilities, a chance to play on the same team while supporting and learning from one another.

All experience levels are welcome to join! All athletes and Unified Partners are required to fill out an application/consent form. Forms can be found at: specialolympicsminnesota.org or can be picked up at the Community Education office.

Parent Volunteer Discount

Do you have a passion for a particular sport or activity? Some of our programs are looking for parent volunteers and we need committed individuals to help out.

When you commit, we ask that you are able to consistently provide assistance for all scheduled program dates. At the end of the activity you will receive credit on your account for use on a future class.

All volunteers must complete an application and background check ($14.00 fee). In addition, all coaches must complete bloodborne pathogen and concussion training two weeks prior to coaching.

The picture you see featured on the front of the guide is courtesy of local resident, Kristie Flachmeyer and it’s of her pet rabbit, Thumper, enjoying lilacs in the spring. Kristie believes that her gift in life is to bring joy to others through photography. She has had no professional training, just a love of capturing beautiful moments and sharing them with those around her. She says that the smiles on the faces of those people she shares her collages with speaks volumes. When Kristie’s not taking photographs, she’s spending time with family, going to the pool with her daughter and sketching (especially flowers).
