From the Desk of Rebecca Pratt What I have learned all too well is that transition in life is always filled with joys, sorrow, challenges, and lessons learned. I have such joy to have lived and worked in such a generous, vibrant, and caring community! Litchfield has been a great place to live, work, and raise my family! But as I face this next transition I have sorrow too. There is sorrow in saying good-bye to colleagues and a fulfilling work, saying good-bye to the familiar. There are challenges (I’ve always loved a good challenge!) in facing the unknown. Lessons learned from Litchfield as I face the excitement of the next leg in life’s journey include: stay open to new people and ideas; enjoy community life as much as possible because everyone can make a difference; and sharing the ball makes for a better chance at winning!

Thank you Litchfield! For sharing life, making a place for me here, and being a great place to call home!

From the Desk of Keri Buker Hello! I am Keri Buker, and I am extremely grateful and excited to be Litchfield’s next Community Education Director. I have spent the last 10 years as a middle school counselor in Hutchinson, which has provided me with a wide variety of experiences to help prepare me for this job. I am thrilled to continue the great work that has been done before me while also being open minded to new ideas to address the ever evolving needs of the community.

There is a lot to learn, but I am confident that with the assistance of Rebecca Pratt and the entire administrative team, the transition will go smoothly.

I am also a mother of 3 little boys (ages 3, 5, and 7) and the wife of a Litchfield High School math teacher and coach. We have been involved in the Litchfield community for the past 13 years and are excited for our family to call Litchfield home.

Dragon Kids Club is ISD #465 Community Education & Recreation’s school age childcare program for children grades K-5 (2020-2021 School Year). We offer professional and caring staff, a variety of enrichment programs, engaging recreational choices, outdoor play, large and small group games and field trips. Litchfield Public Schools Preschool is an on-site, all early childhood service combined in the pre-k to grade 3 continuum with Lake Ripley School. Our early childhood licensed teachers use curriculum and assessment tools approved by the Department of Education.

To reserve a space, a completed registration form and fee must be turned in. Pick up a registration form at Litchfield Community Education & Recreation. Spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Child must be at least 3½ years old on or before August 31, 2021 and fully potty-trained in order to participate.

EARLY CHILDHOOD Early Childhood Screening 2021-2022 Litchfield Public Schools Early Childhood Screening is a service offered to families of children 3-5 years old. It’s a chance to see if the child is achieving developmental milestones of early childhood.

During the screening process, early childhood staff along with the school nurse will check your child’s: - Health history & immunization records - Vision & hearing - Height, weight & growth - Large & small motor skills - Thinking, language & communication skills - Social & emotional development It’s an opportunity to secure support for children who may need help in reaching milestones. In Minnesota, the school district is required to offer screening for ALL children prior to entering kindergarten. If your child is on the school district census, you will be notified about screening close to age 3½ years.

“Building Blocks for Family and School Success” Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE), is offered to Minnesotans through Minnesota public school districts.

What’s the scoop on ECFE? Litchfield ECFE employs certified teachers and experienced support staff. The Early Childhood Center is located in Wagner Education Building 307 E 6th Street Suite 110 Litchfield, MN 55355

For families with children birth to pre-k. A rich variety of experiences that promote growth and development of young children. Involves parents AND children. Research and experience shows that children whose parents are involved early in their education do better in school. Discussion time allows parents to connect, develop relationships, gain support, and learn new parenting skills. We partner with parents to provide the best family experience.

Concerns about a child that’s under three years old?

Children grow and change at their own rate, but you may have concerns that your child’s developing differently than others of the same age.

Little Tykes is an opportunity for preschoolers to learn the basics of softball and baseball in a safe, supervised environment. This program is designed to teach the fundamentals of the game: fielding, grounding, catching, hitting, base running and using a “T.” Soft cloth baseballs will be used. The focus is on the fundamentals of fielding ground and fly balls and proper batting techniques and will pitch underhand to players. Regular softballs will be used and batters will wear helmets. The emphasis will be learning from game situations.

Gr. 3-5 (2020-2021 School Year) Players will learn all the rules of softball and will work on developing the skills of pitching and catching.

Players will also begin to practice the more advanced skills of stealing bases, bunting, cut-offs and more.

Gr. K-1 (2020-2021 School Year) Players learn the basic rules, positions, and skills of baseball. They will practice throwing, catching, batting, and base running. Players will progress from hitting off tees to soft toss, and on to underhand pitching.

Players begin using more advanced skills, such as, stealing bases, bunting, cut-off plays, and more. Hitting will be done against overhand pitching and pitching machines. Real baseballs will be used, along with protective equipment, such as, batting helmets and catcher's gear.

Matt Draeger - LHS Girls Tennis Coach & Staff Gr. K-5 (2020-2021 School Year) The purpose of this camp is to provide an introduction to the game of tennis, learning basic skills such as forehand, backhand, volleys, serving and scoring. Come play some fun tennis games and have a great time while learning.

Summer Training for Pool Sharks Aquatics Staff

Swimming has lifelong benefits so whether your child is a competitive swimmer or has aspirations to be one, this is for them. Staff will provide training, technique, strength and conditioning. Participants must have passed a Level 3 Red Cross swim class or have been a member of a competitive swim team. Registration deadline: 7/6

Golf Ages 5-17

Alex Tipka & Kaitlyn Kusler This program is an instructional program where the junior golfer will learn proper fundamentals for the game of golf. Participants will learn etiquette, grip, stance, set up, putting, chipping, pitching, full swing and have FUN! Fee includes all instruction, range balls and prizes. LHS Volleyball Coaching Staff

Soccer is fast, fun and a great sport for all ages.

Children will have a chance to learn and improve soccer skills, teamwork and strategy. All soccer games will be played outside. We will play in the rain, but not lightning.

This camp will focus on teaching the basic skills of volleyball. There will be small groups for maximum repetition of the skills being taught. We will play a variety of fun drills and games. Please wear tennis shoes and athletic clothing. Please indicate a shirt size when registering (YM-Adult XL).

Volunteer coaches are REQUIRED for this activity to run! We must have committed volunteers by the registration deadline. Coaches do not need a background in soccer, only a desire to help kids have a positive experience. See page 30 for more details on becoming a volunteer coach.

AQUATICS Red Cross Swim Lesson Descriptions

The Red Cross Program is a recognized program instructed by certified staff. Staff test skills at the first class and recommend if another level is more appropriate for your child’s ability. It is not unusual to repeat levels before mastering all the skills.

Make-up lessons are not available for missing a regularly scheduled class. Below you will see the skills taught at each level.

Preschool Level A (Recommended for Ages 4-5) Child’s first lesson without an adult. Introduction to basic skills that will lay the foundation for future skill development.

Heartsaver® CPR AED & First Aid

Heartsaver® courses are intended for anyone with little to no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g. OSHA), or other requirements. Courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.

Heartcode® Basic Life Support (BLS) BLS CPR is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. This course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and prehospital settings. The mission is to reduce substance use/abuse among youth in Meeker County and over time among all adults through strategies that support policies and community norms that reduce commercial access, social availability and acceptability of alcohol, tobacco an other drugs.

In June, MAPP is launching the 2nd annual Meeker County Scavenger Hunt Board to promote prosocial and healthy summer activities for community members of all ages while complying with social distancing. Get active and earn a chance to win a prize from a local business!

COMMUNITY INFORMATION THRIVING THURSDAYS Summer 2021 Welcome to the Litchfield Downtown Council's "Thriving Thursdays". Remember music in Litchfield’s Central Park?

Well, we have a summer of music planned! There is something for everyone. Bring a chair and enjoy music in Central Park from 6:30-8:30 PM. Community non-profits will sell food and beverages starting at 6:00 PM. Pop-up shops and stores are open until 6:30 PM (watch for more details). Rain location is the Litchfield Opera House.

LDC Youth Hockey Association Hey hockey fans - join us this fall for some hockey! It is a wonderful way to spend a Minnesota winter. Boys and girls ages 5-15 are welcome to join!  Learn to skate forwards, backwards and laterally.  Learn to pass, shoot and score! LDC Youth Hockey & BENO are teaming up to promote new Mite skaters involved in Community Education pond hockey (fall guide) and the youth hockey association. Volunteers Needed

Do you have a passion for a particular sport or activity? Some of our youth programs are looking for volunteers and we need committed individuals to help out. When you commit, we ask that you are able to consistently provide assistance for all scheduled program dates. At the end of the activity you may receive credit on your account for use on a future class. All volunteers must complete an application and background check. In addition, all recreation coaches must complete bloodborne pathogen and concussion training a week prior to their first day of coaching.

Confirmation of the space requested is completed after the request is on the master schedule. There may be rental fees, custodial fees, equipment rental fees, kitchen staff fees, and school supervisory fees, along with a scheduling fee, depending on the time and type of request to use school facilities.

The photograph was taken by Heather Weseman. Heather said, “I am a photographer and feel blessed to have many beautiful spots in Litchfield to take pictures. From the many blooms in Anderson Garden, to the spots found around Lake Ripley and the many parks around the city. Taking pictures of Jonny has become an annual thing.

We do the photo session in Litchfield around his birthday and always have lots of giggles.
