WELCOME TO THE NEWLY ARRIVED RESEARCHERS AT ISCTE-IUL

1 SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IS A KEY COMPONENT OF THE ACTIVITY OF ISCTE - UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF LISBON

Every year arrive in our Institute several highly skilled researchers, either Portuguese or of different other nationalities. They come to work with teams of researchers at the various Research Units of ISCTE-IUL. These Research Units are, along with the Departments and Schools, the main organizational structures of ISCTE-IUL. They are centres of high quality research, mostly with top FCT ratings. At this meeting, we intend to welcome the newly arrived researchers. We wish them all a very productive and pleasant living in ISCTE-IUL. We count on them to strengthen our research teams and to develop scientific research with international quality. We hope they will establish cooperative ties with their colleagues at the research units in which they are integrated and expect them to participate

in innovative interdisciplinary initiatives with colleagues from these research units. We also hope that they can enrich the advanced training of ISCTE-IUL, at the masters’s and doctorate levels, and that they supervise masters dissertations and doctoral theses. We count on them to carry out research projects, attract research funds and author high-level international scientific publications. One of the main ISCTE-IUL’s strategic goals is to become a research university with an increasingly higher and internationalized scientific performance, having at its core the advancement of knowledge and its application to institutions, economy and society. We are very happy that you join us in exploring the future. Fernando Luís Machado The ISCTE-IUL Rector’s Board

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE My name is Miguel Atanásio Carvalho and I’m from Lisbon. I originally graduated in Physics at Instituto Superior Técnico. A twist in my research interests lead me to a MSc in Economics, and later a MPhil and PhD at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands. The thesis, which was defended in 2011, called “Essays in Behavioral Microeconomic Theory” focused on deviations from the classic Expected Utility Decision Theory and on some of its implications in the context of microeconomic models. After my defense, I became a post-doc researcher at Catolica University where I worked as a microeconomist with researchers from other fields, namely consumer behavior, health economics and innovation policy. I recently joined BRU-IUL as a post-doc researcher. I’m now giving a microeconomic flavour to the project “Currency Competition, Leaders and Wars” with Alexandra Lopes, Emanuel Gasteiger and Teresa Sousa.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Since I came to know Organizational Psychology at the University of Coimbra I was interested on this positive and preventive focus of organizational scientists: understanding and creating well-being at the workplace. Hence, I took my Master’s on Work, Organizational and Personnel Psychology (Coimbra and Barcelona Universities) and my research focused on the role of emotions on intra-group conflicts. Since then, I have also worked as a consultant and trainer aiming to use this scientific knowledge in practical interventions. In 2012, I joined Católica-Lisbon UNICEE research unit which allows me to work directly with behavioral research in topics such as leader emotions, and organizational justice. In 2013/2014, I started the ISCTE PhD Program on Human Resources and Organizational Behavior, supervised by Professor Ana Passos and Professor David Patient. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE After being commissioned as an army officer, I worked in many units as platoon leader and company commander. During those times, I finished two master studies - Master of Business Administration : (Yeditepe University /ISTANBU) and Master of Art in National and International Security Strategy Management and Leadership. Due to professional success, I was admitted to Turkish War Colleges. After two years of study, I graduated as a staff officer. Finally, I was assigned to a NATO Headquarter, SHAPE- Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers of Europe in Mons/Belgium. My professional career plan required me to improve my skills in managerial sciences. I have been working as an army officer for 16 years, and 10 years of that period were passed in army education centers and schools. Currently, I work as a defense planner in strategic headquarter of NATO in Belgium, and I am in charge of planning and reviewing all defense subjects especially from planning personnel and armies in order to be prepared for a full operation in future. This is a kind of managing future from now. In order to fulfill this task, countries management strategies should be consistent with NATO strategies. If not all the efforts and money spent by the countries may be futile. These realities burden me with the heavy responsibility of being an expert in planning human resources and organizational behaviors. Being a mother of three and working fulltime at a public university as a study coordinator, teacher and academic researcher, it was not easy to find an international study program which offers external students a PhD program. I was born in the South of Germany and I hold currently two degrees, one in undergraduate studies in the field of business administration, and one in graduate studies as an MBA, with specialization in business management. I studied in Germany and in the USA, I speak five languages and besides my work I run my own little firm, called rentabag. I founded rentabag in 2010 and it was very exciting being an entrepreneur undergoing through all the various and challenging steps of a start-up business. I am highly interested in my research fields: sustainability and strategy & entrepreneurship. WELCOME TO CIES-IUL, CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND STUDIES IN SOCIOLOGY João Sebastião Director of CIES-IUL

Dear Researchers, It is a great pleasure to welcome you to CIES-IUL. We hope to fulfill your expectations and provide you with an interdisciplinary and international environment to allow a successful implementation of your project. The choice of the CIES-IUL gives the opportunity to explore and use the support of our scientific infrastructure and the wider resources of the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL). As you know CIES-IUL’s main scientific field is sociology, but we also have strong scientific expertise and research in the fields of public policy, political science, education, communication and urban studies. On this multidisciplinary basis, we study processes of social and institutional change at the national and international levels, from a comparative, quantitative and qualitative perspective. At the same time, we pay special attention to the ways in which these changes are associated, as causes and effects, with public policies. We count on your initiative to expand and enrich the collective work and to build together new opportunities. We hope this is the starting point of a longstanding collaboration with our Centre. You are very welcome!

I tried to combine the perspective of social history with approaches from other disciplines such as anthropology, political science and historical sociology. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE My name is Carla and I was born in Lisbon. Growing up, I was quite intrigued by the diversity of human behaviour and such a curiosity led me to a degree in Social and Organisational Psychology and, after that, to a PhD in Social Psychology. I have worked in several research projects and I also did a traineeship at the EMCDDA, a European Agency that monitors drugs and drug addiction in Europe. I have studied why and when disadvantaged groups opt for collective actions that are considered by advantaged majority members as destructive, harmful and/ or violent. Now, as a post-doctoral researcher of the project “Nice but incompetent? The Elderly stereotype in Europe”, I am studying strategies to decrease ageism and exploring the processes related to the so-called “successful ageing”. I am interested in intergroup relations in general, namely in the factor contributing to both conflictual and harmonious intergroup relations.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE I was born in a small village in Alentejo and lived there until my last college year, having then decided to become a researcher and moved to Lisbon to finish my degree. Growing up surrounded with nature and deep community relationships, I was always interested both on physical and human nature phenomena. Biology was my first career choice and it was also the first time I left the community. Partly because of that and, mostly, because of the lack of real thinking and arguing that I had fantasize college would be, I came to realize that what I was really interested in was the biology regarding human beings, the tangled wing that we call human nature. Since then I’ve been in the Psychology field, mainly working as a researcher. Community is still a very important part of my life. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE I am working in the field of Socially Situated Cognition and Embodiment, studying the influence of the body and the physical and social context on cognition. In my master thesis I investigated the influence of the motor system on cognition, more specifically the influence of movement direction and amplitude on memory retrieval. As research assistant I focused in the relation between valence and spatial position, the contribution of spatial content for this relation, and the possible confound between valence and spatial content. Currently, I am studying the grounding of Emotion on Language. Specifically, I am exploring the possibility that different languages are embodied in a different way and that these differences can be expressed in different somatovisceral and behavioral responses.

3.2 UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE

The ISCTE-IUL University Residence meets some of the accommodation needs of its visiting students and professors who have so far only been served by the private accommodation market all over Lisbon. Located in the 17th-century Santos-o-Novo Monastery, which is classified as a National Monument, on a small hill by the river Tagus in Lisbon’s east end, the residence has a splendid view and is a short distance from the central railway station of Santa Apolónia, the traditional neighbourhood of Alfama, downtown Lisbon, Terreiro do Paço, and the new residential, retail and service area of Parque das Nações. Since there are more applicants than vacancies, it will not be possible to provide accommodation at the hall residence for all exchange students.
