12 networks The INTERNATIONAL SPORT AND CULTURE ASSOCIATION (ISCA) is a global platform open to organizations working within the field of sport for all, recreational sports and physical activity. ISCA is today a global actor closely cooperating with its member organizations, international NGOs, and public and private sector stakeholders. ISCA conceives sport as an integral part of civic life and promotes active participation through attractive offers that encourage the citizens’ involvement in sports, health-related exercises, recreational activities, leisure activities and games. ISCA and its members act as enabler of physical activity offers locally, nationally and internationally. Understanding and acting upon people’s expectations and demands is the daily challenge for our members and it is our key task to support them in meeting these demands and in being front-runners in spotting and developing new trends.

GR ASSROOTS SPORT IS TOP OF THE POP Participation in grassroots sport is in fact ‘top of the pop’ and not the bottom of the pyramid as often depicted. The archaic view of a pyramidal sport and physical activity fails to adequately describe the size and functional links between the different actors in sport and physical activity. Just as in music, fashion or art, ‘pop’ describes a popular or widespread trend among ordinary people. Grassroots sport is by numbers and participation levels at the top of popular human activities. Grassroots sport is not the bottom of a pyramid. It is simply top of the pop!
European sport federations
ISCA embraces the recent findings of Prof. J. Scheerder et al. from the University of Leuwen advancing the ‘CHURCH MODEL’, which illustrates more precisely the size and intersections of the different sectors in the field of sport and physical activity. Indeed, ISCA’s member organisations mainly operate in recreational sport and competitive sport.

ISCA pursues a two-fold strategy leveraging on one hand the inspiration and development of the sport and physical activity sector through international project work and on the other hand the political advocacy through a continuous dialogue with international decision-makers. ISCA’s brand value is built on a high credibility vis-àvis European institutions, an outstanding track record in tendering and implementing EU funded projects, an ambitious long-term strategy featuring the involvement of 100 million more Europeans in sport and physical activity by 2020, and finally a close relation to its member organisations. We are committed to facilitate international networks and cross-sectoral cooperation by consulting diverse sets of stakeholders and thereby serve as a joint research and development agency for the sport and physical activity sector. Thus, ISCA continues building its record as a promoter, innovator and advocate of the grassroots sport movement.
PROJECT portfolio The SPORT AND CULTURES IN DIALOGUE involves 10 national sport organizations from 10 European countries engaging in a direct and trans-national dialogue between citizens in existing EU member countries and in 3 candidate countries from South East Europe. The project focuses on the role that sport and sport organizations play in developing a strong civil society as a basis for a successful EU accession process. www.mydialogue.info The Sport Action Network of Europe SANTE is an ambitious health-promoting venture of 17 partners from across Europe including sport organizations, esteemed universities, businesses and local government. As sport holds great potential for promoting healthenhancing physical activity, SANTE sets out to support cross-sector innovative partnerships fostering education across Europe and the information of future policy initiatives within health enhancing physical activity. www.mysante.info

EUROVOLNET is a transnational initiative within the context of the European Year of Volunteering 2011 project that fosters the exchange of best practices regarding legal, organizational and funding related aspects of voluntary activity in sport. The project partners form a network of actors involved in the management and running of sport associations. www.eurovolnet.info The MOVE project is founded on the proposition that everybody is entitled to enjoy the benefits of physical activity. In this spirit, ISCA has teamed-up with 8 core partner organisations and 15 collaborating partners to take up the challenge of promoting physical activity among socially disadvantaged groups. The MOVE project collects and qualifies good practices that have been successful in targeting youth, ethnic minorities and immigrants, girls and women, and finally seniors. www.wemoveyou.eu
The GOOD GOVERNANCE IN GRASSROOTS SPORT project aims at increasing the capacity of non- governmental grassroots sport organizations in Europe to govern in a transparent and accountable way. As grassroots sport is most often based on small, local sport clubs relying heavily on voluntary work, the project addresses crucial issues such as the financial stability and the relations to public authorities. The partnership involves 22 partners, including national sports organisations, universities and international partners such as Transparency International and Special Olympics. The MOVE CONGRESSES are part of ISCA’s endeavour to create a yearly meeting-point where all our partners from grassroots sport, businesses, governments and international decision makers can meet and exchange in a vibrant 3 day congress setup. The MOVE congress was held in Copenhagen (2009), Frankfurt (2010), Paris (2011) and will move to Sao Paulo (2012) and Barcelona (2013). www.move2011.info
