simpatia quando sono curiosi, intelligenti, propositivi e perseverano nella realizzazione dei loro sogni. E al SaloneSatellite negli anni ne ho sempre incontrati molti, anzi moltissimi, per non dire tutti, fatti così. Arrivano con i loro prototipi da lontano, raggianti per l’essere stati selezionati a questa impareggiabile esperienza milanese. Arrivano con il loro bagaglio culturale e accademico e con la determinazione di riuscire a entrare nel mondo del design, per farne la loro professione. A questi ragazzi desidero offrire tutto il possibile come Presidente del Salone del Mobile: la massima visibilità, la massima assistenza e una grande accoglienza. Senza di loro non ci sarebbe il nostro futuro di imprenditori, nessun testimone da passare. Per questo anche quest’anno abbiamo voluto affiancarli alle botteghe artigiane che esplorano la lavorazione di alcuni materiali tradizionali tessuto, ceramica, pelle - e a quello che invece sarà l’artigianato del futuro, la stampa digitale: per trasmettere loro l’importanza della fattibilità di una idea che è diventata progetto. A questi ragazzi, auguro uno straordinario e indimenticabile SaloneSatellite!
people who are curious, intelligent, proactive and persevering in the realization of their dreams. And through the years of the SaloneSatellite I’ve met many, very many of them who fit the bill. All of them, really. They arrive from afar with their prototypes, ecstatic at having been chosen for this incomparable Milanese experience. They arrive with their cultural and academic baggage, along with the determination to enter the world of design and make it their profession. As President of the Salone del Mobile, I want to give everything possible to these young people: maximum visibility, maximum assistance and a warm welcome. Without them we would have no future as entrepreneurs, no baton to pass on. For this reason, we will once again exhibit their ideas alongside artisanal workshops that explore the techniques of working traditional materials – textile, ceramic and leather – as well as what will become the craftsmanship of the future, digital 3-D printing, to transmit to our young people the importance of how an idea can become reality. I wish all of them an extraordinary and unforgettable SaloneSatellite!

Eccoci arrivati al SaloneSatellite 2014!
Here we are at SaloneSatellite 2014!
Dopo una rigorosa valutazione fatta dal prestigioso Comitato di Selezione questi 650 ragazzi arrivati da 32 Paesi e dai 5 continenti si presentano con l’entusiasmo dei giovani debuttanti con delle proposte di progetto caratterizzate da un alto contenuto innovativo, espresso attraverso il rispetto dei materiali. E raccontando in questo modo la loro visione del mondo: poetica, pratica, sostenibile, immaginifica, nobile. Anche quest’anno continuiamo - per approfondirlo - il tema “Design, Innovazione + Artigianalità”. Dopo aver valorizzato il legno, il vetro e il metallo attraverso le mani di esperti artigiani, per questa 17a edizione sono state allestite le Botteghe del Tessile, della Ceramica e della Pelle. Ritorna anche l’artigianato digitale, siamo entrati nell’era del digital manufacturing, considerato il futuro del design tra artigianato e 3D perché il SaloneSatellite ha sempre avuto due occhi di riguardo per il futuro: uno verso i giovani in quanto persone (andare incontro ai loro sogni e speranze), l’altro verso i giovani in quanto professionisti (consigliandoli, sgridandoli, apprezzandoli e mettendoli in contatto con gli espositori del Salone del Mobile).
After the rigorous evaluation of our illustrious Selection Committee, these 650 designers from 32 countries and 5 continents will lend their youthful enthusiasm to the proceedings, presenting projects characterized by high innovation content, expressed through their respect for materials and their vision of the world: poetic, practical, sustainable, imagistic, noble. We continue this year with the theme of “Design, Innovation + Craftsmanship”, expanding on last year’s program. After having learned about wood, glass and metal through the hands of expert artisans, for the 17th edition we have installed Textile, Ceramic and Leather Workshops. Also back again this year is the Digital Workshop, for we have entered the era of digital manufacturing, considered to be the future of design. And as everyone knows, the SaloneSatellite has always had both eyes on the future: one for young designers as individuals (helping them realize their hopes and dreams), and the other as professionals (advising them, pushing them, appreciating them and placing them in contact with exhibitors at the Salone del Mobile).

Ho scelto diverse venature di legno
per creare una texture, come se il tavolo fosse coperto da una tovaglia a quadri. Nervature, colori e spessori delle diverse essenze sono stati ripetutamente accostati fino a trovare l’equilibrio perfetto. Ogni tavolo è una singola unità. Accostandone due i pattern si connettono.
I chose different grains of wood to
create a pattern, as if the table was covered with a wooden chequered tablecloth. The grains, colors, thickness of different wood types and textures had to be combined a number of times to reach the perfect balance. Each squared table is a separate unit, the pattern is continued and shows a beauty of order by putting two of them alongside each other.

Nata lo scorso anno per conferire visibilità “a un mondo sommerso che fa bene, a quelle persone che stanno dietro le quinte dell’arredo, a quei sarti e ricamatori che tagliano, cuciono e decorano, a quel backstage dello star system fra aziende e designer”, quest’iniziativa si ripropone di mettere in contatto artigiani e giovani perché, anche in piena industrializzazione, la manualità resta fondamentale per l’industria, permettendo di realizzare prototipi e parti utili alla messa a punto della produzione in serie. Si parla tanto della perdita delle tradizioni, in particolare di quelle artigianali. Si importa manodopera dall’estero perché quella di casa non basta, però la nostra abilità è quella che ha fatto da sempre il made in Italy - facendoci diventare famosi già secoli fa. Ultimamente e fortunatamente sono nate scuole di formazione per dare ai giovani un mestiere e al lavoro artigianale un nuovo significato. Per dare valore al “cuore” dei prodotti, per capire come nascono, crescono, si evolvono per poi arrivare nelle nostre case. Anche quest’anno ci sono 4 botteghe artigiane tessile, ceramica, pelle e digitale, per capire come la mano crea ciò che la mente elabora, passando dalla materia. Sta cambiando, infatti, il modo in cui si passa dal progetto all’oggetto perché in futuro la nuova generazione di artigiani dovrà coniugare la cura di materiali e finiture con le tecniche digitali. L’arredo artigianale è entrato nella terza rivoluzione industriale: e come in un gioco degli specchi le tecnologie digitali riportano al centro il valore della bellezza e del fatto su misura.
DESIGN, INNOVATION +CRAFTMANSHIP Second year for the artisan workshops
initiative. Started last year to give visibility to a hidden dimension, to the people who work behind the scenes of the furniture business, the woodworkers and upholsterers who cut and carve and stitch, the backstage world of the star system, this initiative aims to put young designers in contact with artisans, because even in a fully industrialized age, manual skill remains fundamental for the entire pre-production phase. People talk about dying traditions, particularly traditional craftsmanship.We import it from abroad because we don’t have the manpower, but the fact is our skills are what has made ‘Made in Italy’ famous around the world for centuries. Fortunately, new schools are cropping up where young people can learn a trade, and where artisanal craftsmanship acquires new meaning. Four artisanal workshops - Textile, Ceramic, Leather, 3-D Printing - to understand how products are born and how they evolve before arriving in our homes. To understand how the hand creates, through materials, that which the mind conceives. The passage from project to object is in fact changing, because in the future, the new generation of artisans will have to combine knowledge of materials and finishes with digital techniques. Hand craftsmanship has entered a third industrial revolution. And, like a game of mirrors, digital technology is redirecting the spotlight on beauty and on the custom made.

LA MISSIONE DEL DESIGN? Uno dei compiti principali del design è aiutare le persone a gestire i cambiamenti. I designer stanno tra le rivoluzioni e il quotidiano. Studiano e apprezzano i ricordi e la natura delle persone, le loro forze e insicurezze, il loro bisogno di un facile accesso a oggetti e sistemi, e i loro timidi desideri di avventura un po’ di brivido al giorno va bene, ma qualsiasi cosa in più diventa un ostacolo. I designer hanno la capacità di cogliere i cambiamenti che avvengono nella tecnologia, nelle scienze e nei costumi sociali, e convertirli in oggetti e idee che la gente può poi realmente capire e utilizzare. Senza i designer, al posto di una città virtuale di homepage con finestre, porte, bottoni e collegamenti, Internet sarebbe ancora un’incomprensibile stringa di codice. Lungo il percorso, rendono note le loro visioni e aspirazioni per il prossimo futuro. Senza il design non ci sarebbe innovazione.
THE MISSION OF DESIGN? Indeed, one of design’s most fundamental tasks is to help people deal with change. Designers stand between revolutions and everyday life. They study and appreciate people’s natures and memories, their strengths and insecurities, their need for easy access to objects and systems and their cautiously adventurous wishes - a little frisson a day is acceptable, but anything more becomes a hindrance. Designers have the ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science, and social mores, and to convert them into objects and ideas that people can actually understand and use. Without designers, instead of a virtual city of home pages with windows, doors, buttons, and links, the Internet would still be a series of obscure strings of code. CHE COSA PUÒ INSEGNARE UN ARTIGIANO AI GIOVANI? Io credo che l’artigianato possa insegnare ai giovani una cosa soprattutto: e cioè la fiducia nelle proprie capacità. Vedere nascere dal lavoro delle mani qualcosa di bello, di pregevole, qualcosa di finito e di riuscito può, infatti, procurare una soddisfazione e una fierezza che poche altre cose sanno dare, specialmente a dei ragazzi magari umiliati da lunghe e vane ricerche di lavoro, da rifiuti e porte chiuse oltre che dalla sia pure velata disistima di amici e parenti e, forse, anche dalla propria.
WHAT DOES AN ARTISAN CAN TEACH TO YOUNG GENERATIONS? I do believe that craftsmen can teach young people mainly one thing: to trust their own skills. Watching something beautiful, valuable, something finished and well made being brought to life through handworking can generate a level of satisfaction and pride that only few other things can bring. Especially for young people who have been humiliated by long and unsuccesful job searches, rejections and closed doors, and by the lack of esteem, albeit hidden, of friends and relatives, and - maybe – also their own.

COSA PENSI DEL DESIGN OPEN-SOURCE? L’idea del design open-source è senza dubbio visionaria e interessante. Un designer pubblica un’idea, o persino un prodotto, e li rende accessibili alla sua audience. Nel mio approccio alla progettazione di un oggetto e nel mio lavoro in generale non è rilevante, perché voglio seguire in prima persona e vagliare l’intero processo. Rendere pubblico un concept significa dare a qualcun altro l’opportunità di trasferire la tua visione e non puoi garantire che il risultato sia ancora in sintonia con te e la tua attitudine. In alcune aree di applicazione, come l’industrial design, penso che l’open-source possa essere utile e costruttivo.
WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF OPEN-SOURCE DESIGN? The idea of open-source design is definitely visionary and interesting. A designer publishes his idea or even his design and makes it accessible to his audience. In my approach to design something and my work in general it is not relevant, because I want to follow up and scrutinize the whole development of my projects. Making a concept public means always to give someone else the opportunity to transfer your vision and you can´t guarantee that the design is still in your mood and accords to your attitude. In some application areas like the main industrial design I think open-source design is useful and constructive.

QUAL È LA GRANDE SFIDA, OGGI, PER UN DESIGNER? La grande sfida, per un designer, è sempre la stessa: trovare un equilibrio tra cultura e mercato. Tenere insieme le due forze senza che una prevalga sull’altra; introdurre nel progetto un elemento che superi il semplice scambio commerciale e rendere la cultura accessibile e desiderabile. La novità è l’orizzonte produttivo con cui ci si confronta: non più solo l’industria dei grandi numeri ma anche quella artigiana, legata a un’idea di unicità e di lusso. Conoscere questa realtà, comprenderne tecnologie e mestieri, sapere come si lavora a mano il legno, il cuoio, il vetro, diventa un obbligo per tutti i designer.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE, TODAY, FOR A DESIGNER? A designer always has the same big challenge: finding a balance between culture and market. Keeping these two forces together wihtout letting any of them prevail; introducing in each project something that allows it to overcome simple commercial logics; making culture accessible and desirable. The key change is the manufacturing landscape which designers face today: not anymore only the large industries but now also the workshops, defined by values of uniqueness and luxury. Understanding this reality, mastering its technologies and techniques, knowing how to handwork wood, leather, glass, is a must for every designer.

QUAL È IL SEGRETO DI UN BUON PRODOTTO? Il segreto di un buon prodotto risiede in una combinazione ottimale di caratteristiche che lo rendono unico e insostituibile. Il prodotto deve innanzitutto apportare benessere: chi decide di acquistarlo deve percepirne il valore aggiunto e i benefici che si ripercuoteranno sulla sua personale interpretazione dello “star bene” quotidiano. Un buon prodotto deve inoltre essere in grado di migliorare uno o più aspetti della qualità della vita in maniera oggettiva, misurabile e concreta.
WHAT IS THE SECRET OF A GOOD PRODUCT? The secret of a good product relies in a perfect combination of features that make it unique and irreplaceable. The product should create well-being: when you decide to buy it, you must perceive its value added and the benefits it brings to your personal interpretation of well-being. A good product must also be able to improve quality of life in one or more aspects, in an objective, measurable and concrete way.

IL DESIGN DEVE ABBRACCIARE LE NUOVE TECNOLOGIE? Dal mio punto di vista, non esiste mai un “must” assoluto per un designer quando questo o questa pianifica, crea e sviluppa un’idea o un progetto. Evidentemente, le nuove tecnologie sono ovunque, e come parte della nostra vita (anche se non ci piace!) coinvolgono in una certa misura tutto quello che facciamo. Un designer può sempre scegliere di utilizzarle o meno. Di utilizzarle prima o dopo il lancio di un progetto. Di utilizzarle come semplice strumento o come obiettivo. Di utilizzarle in modo critico o con ammirazione. Credo che l’unico must assoluto sia sapere di quali tecnologie si tratta, sapere come usarle per essere poi in grado di sceglierle, adattarle, forzarle, giocarci e magari respingerle. Le nuove tecnologie non hanno sapore, né colore, né una forma di per sé: hanno bisogno del designer per essere vive.
IS IT A MUST FOR DESIGN TO EMBRACE NEW TECHNOLOGIES? From my point of view, there is never such a thing as an absolute “must” for a designer to embrace when she or he plans, creates and develops an idea or a project. New technologies are of course everywhere and, as part of our lives (even if we don’t like it !), they are integrated to a certain extent in anything we do. A designer has always the choice to use them or not. To use them before or after launching a project. To use them as a simple tool or as a goal. To use them in a critical way or in an admirative way. I do believe that the only absolute must is to know what technologies are, to know how to use them to be then able to choose, adapt, squeeze, play with and maybe, reject them. New technologies have no savor, no color, no real form per se: they do need the designer to be alive.

Questa è la sfida oggi: non cedere ma incidere per emergere. The ideal client are all those craftsmen that have great humility and an inner willingness to try passionately, without certainties of the final outcome, for whom a look is enough to see the sparkle of enthusiasm and energy in my eyes that can often be the origin of a good project.

It’s time for the fifth edition of the award
instituted by the SaloneSatellite to further consolidate the event whose purpose is to facilitate contact between businesses and designers, between creativity and production. The award offers young designers additional motivation to their commitment and greater visibility to their ideas. It also aims to help them focus their creativity by pushing them to think specifically in terms of the furnishing typologies present in the catalogues of the exhibitors at the Salone del Mobile particularly this year’s Eurocucina and International Bathroom Exhibition. The award is also intended to bring the manufacturing world closer and make it more real to young designers, for whom it is all too often a distant mirage. Il tavolo è di legno massello e il piano, a forma di cupola nella parte inferiore, ha una sua caratteristica circonferenza irregolare. Per ottimizzare design e materiali il piano è realizzato con fresatura cnc. Le gambe sono tornite e incastrate con colla al piano. Inspired by puddles of water, “I” stands for irregular. The table is made of solid wood, with a dome shaped bottom and with its characteristic irregular shape. To achieve the best results in design and material is the table top made using cnc milling. The table legs are made using a wood turner, then recessed and glued into the table top.

Una lunga trave a gru attraversa la stanza oscillando fra un paralume collocato a un’estremità e un sacchetto di sabbia sull’altra. A long beam cranes across the room and balances a lampshade on one side against a sandbag in the other. The sandbag can be moved manually into four positions weighing in different lighting atmospheres and in accordance with the ambient.

The system is based on oak veneered multiplex’sheets planks wich is engraved with cnc. The drawing of the frame agrees with the golds of hot folded plexiglass’sheets. XCELLENT DESIGN, Taiwan (D39) È l’applicazione dell’idea di un vassoio-tavolinolampada che illumina il cibo e lo spazio. Le sue gambe sono in lega di alluminio. Il piano è composto da due elementi di acrilico: uno, rimovibile per la pulizia, accoglie il cibo; l’altro è l’alloggio per luce. It is an application of the concept of tray table with build-in lamp lights up the food and space. The feet are made of casting aluminum, the tray is made by two pieces of acrylic, one is to place the food, removable for cleaning, the other is the light guide.

YANGAN, Taiwan (C15) Ho scelto diverse essenze per creare un pattern, come se il tavolo fosse coperto con una tovaglia di legno a scacchi. Per raggiungere il perfetto equilibrio, è stato necessario provare più volte la combinazione di grana, colori, spessore e texture. Il pattern è continuo e mostra la sua bellezza regolare accostando due tavoli. I chose different grains of wood to create a pattern, as if the table was covered with a wooden chequered tablecloth. The grains, colors, thickness of different wood

and textures had to be combine a number of times to reach the perfect balance. The pattern is continued and shows a beautys of order by putting two of them alongside each other.
