How might we allow nurses to take care of the patient through communication?

First prize in the Contest “Redesigning Healthcare” Problem:

Outcome:

Significant communication problem among nurses.

All communication is supposed to happen through nurses. However, communication channels are lacking and information isn’t delivered, creating tension and problems for doctors, nurses and patients. The lack of infrastructure for easy communication created emotional issues that added to the problem and made nurses’ jobs even more difficult.

A team of 2 industrial and 1 graphic designer took 5 months to research and test with nurses in private hospitals in Mexico City. We prototyped tested and developed the physical product and platform of “INCYCLE Communication system”to allow nurses and doctors to look at patients information in a much easier way.

· InNetwork allows nurses and doctors to access to patient information in a secure any time, anywhere just a few steps away using the Station with the InCylce System. · In Hand is a personal device which allows nurses to get all the information, where they are and when they need it. This way they are able to respond right away to the emergencies presented. · In Space: to complete the communication cycle and reinforce our project we redesigned the nurses’ room making it a lot more comfortable: implementing a folding multi use table that we designed as well as Steelcase furniture.

Goal: To give the nurse a tool, and adequate space in which she can feel more comfortable and do better at her job.

Main Proposal: Improve communication between everyone and merge all their tasks Secondary Proposal: use the available space to integrate users in a more comfortable environment and thus improve their job quality.

Improvements The Improvements with InCycle are remarkable.

Nurses will Save 50 % of time, which means more quality time with the patient. Less time filling up Paperwork, which means more attention to caring.

How might we improve immigrants’ experience?

Problem:

Outcome:

Immigration is a hot button and complex issue confronting the United States. Through human centered design research our multi-disciplinary team of 5 concluded through talking to more than 50 people and 5 different research methodologies, there is a substantial economic value in helping support the immigrant experience. The greatest pain point we identified was the lack of education and language skills needed to successfully integrate into the US job market.

aVenture is a service offering that delivers an educational platform designed to raise immigrants economic status.

How might we make the airport more human?

Problem:

Outcome:

We had the challenge to improve airport experience.

Through thoughtful research and consideration, each member of our multidisciplinary team of 5 were intrigued by the social commonality that we all share while sitting in the airport terminal and the opportunity to connect with other travelers.

Airports around the world are notorious for providing lackluster and inconsistent experiences. While most people can appreciate the sensation of jet setting to a favorite destination, almost every one of those same people can share a story about an airline experience that left something to be desired. Despite the advantages these stories provide in making great dinner conversation, they most certainly could have been done without.

Strategy: To create a catalyzer for human interaction through two tactics

We tested our assumptions, went to the terminals, spoke to travelers, and prototyped several concepts to increase social interaction and, in theory, make the airport better. Through our iterations at the airport and CCA we created two succesful products accepted by the communities.

1. A “social” boarding pass that allows passenger connect with others if they want to.

2. Connecting the passenger through a sharing stories board.

Business Model Recommendations for a Startup in early stage

Our team took on the task of doing customer research and business model analysis to generate recommendation for a startup to improve their value proposition.

Through deep design research process with stakeholders, prototyping and testing we developed three key recommendations for the company to improve their offering.

Background: The multi-sided nature of PillDrill’s customer segments makes it necessary for any product development activity to incorporate the needs of both the segments. The first aim of our team was to build awareness around the caregiving activity in general, and family caregiving in particular. This prompted engaging in deep dive research, which involved different types of caregivers and care receivers.

How can PillDrill offer more value to its existing customer segments* by incorporating both their needs while using its existing product technology?

“I cannot handle another notification on my phone. I would like to access all the information in one place.”

“I would pay a monthly subscription to track and schedule my kid’s medication and coordinate with my husband.”

In a subscription model, families with more than one caregiver will be able to coordinate their family member’s routine with the help of PillDrill’s platform.

Pill Drill could consider expanding their market to include others individuals with basic to critical pill routines.

What are the other promising analogous customers segment whose current needs can be immediately addressed by PillDrill’s current technology and/ or product offering?

The Reformation

How might we assist The Reformation in creating an elegant, simple, and impactful end of product life scenario for their garments?

Problem:

Outcome:

The current relationship between Reformation and the customer has one key touch point, the point of sale. While there may be interaction on either side of the purchase via marketing, email, and advertising, it is unlikely that another interactive point of contact will occur for that particular purchase.

Our team has designed a second key touch point between Reformation and their customer. We call this touch point “Collection”, as part of a broader “One of a Kind Collection” initiative. Starting with the brick and mortar Reformation stores in Los Angeles and New York City, customer can bring in their used clothes in exchange for a 15% discount on their next purchase.

While efforts are being made to alter this cycle, the current solutions are not suitable for the high quality, biodegradable fabrics used by Reformation. An alternatively designed scenario can better align with the values of the Reformation brand while also more positively contributing to the environment and their customer experience.

How might we change the perception of garbage cans?

Problem:

Outcome:

Challenge: to redesign the garbage collecting system of Universidad Iberoamericana.

Garbage management is a huge problem in Mexico nowadays. In the Universidad Iberoamericana, the department of Environmental Care has been making a huge effort to be more environmental friendly possible. However, their current recycling system is not successful. The students and teachers don’t throw bottles and cans in the marked containers.

I took on the research in the subject and found out that people don’t distinguish between a normal container and a recycle container.

The solution was to develop a playful and different system. The challenge was to make it different from the normal containers and be attractive.

How might we foster communication between children through play?

Challenge:

Outcome:

To design a playing system.

The solution towards this problem was to build a toy with 4 types of pieces for two players, each player having 2. The players could build different animals by assembling the pieces. In order to complete the animal they had to play in team because pieces of each player could not be assembled without the other one’s.

This project was developed in my foreign exchange semester in the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The goal was to design a functional system and the task was to design a toy.

“Sferix” was the result of a deep research in which my team of two other industrial designers and I found out that the communication between children was poor. Children in this century live a stressful life, and they rather play alone.

How might we improve children’s hygiene in class?

APAC is an association and school that helps children that have problems developing motor skills. I had the challenge of using design to solve a problem and I learned that designers can help solve physical problems. There are a lot of objects which help the children...

Through observation and surveys I found that teachers spend a significant amount of time in the classroom cleaning the children after eating or playing.

These tasks take their focus away from the children.

I developed a cleaning station in which they can change and clean the children and store everything they need.

It made a huge difference for the teachers.

Speed vehicle Challenge: design and build a one-manned gravity powered vehicle, which was meant to accelerate faster than the competition in downhill conditions. One of the main goals was to build the vehicle with the right function of a mechanical steering and braking systems with an emphasis on aerodynamics and a lightweight structure and component, all which could enable the vehicle to excel on a less is more thesis.

One of the main challenges of the design was to assemble all parts adequately in order for them to allow for a low rolling resistance when the vehicle was in motion.

How might we connect volunteers and nonprofits?

Startup Weekend Mobile Edition Mexico (2013) I pitched the idea of an app that would facilitate the connection between people that want to volunteer and nonprofits that need volunteers to develop projects together. A team of 7 was formed and we created the concept and designed the app in 36 hours.

I developed the UI and UX and with the help of one developer we had a working application.

How might we build new ways to speak to potential donors?

As part of the development team, I developed different strategies to approach donors for TECHO.org, taking in account their profiles, work routine and expectations. I designed infographics that were used to reach out to donors and were successful in engaging them and presenting the idea behind TECHO. It’s amazing how things can be better if you listen to people’s needs.

This approach was completely different from the traditional philanthropic world. Applying design to the sales process I achieved the highest record in donations in the history of Techo México.

Puro Color - startup I created Puro Color with my aunt and business partner. It is a Mexican brand that rescues Mexican traditions, embroideries and phrases and places them in modern designs such as T-Shirts.

Mexico is a country with a very rich culture, however the indigenous people who make them are slowly getting out of their villages and perusing a future in the cities. The embroideries are less each year thus we want to preserve these traditions in a modern way that fits all.

Puro Color aims to foster the daily use of clothes and objects that contain the traditional symbols of the country to preserve culture.

It is sold in Mexico and France.
