ISSUE 1

Welcome to the first edition of GUISE MAGAZINE- a curated and thoughtful issue of inspiring articles based on art as a discourse exploring the relationship between art, fashion, architecture, as well as investigating how the visual arts impact our daily lives. For some, the COVID-19 pandemic, and circumstances, forced us to “examine our creative minds” a lot better than perhaps previously perceived. This led many of us to optimise our own creative mindsets as well as explore how different aspects of the art world influence our lifestyle choices.

For many of us, art and design are the embodiment of function being expressed through a lens of beauty, or in the eloquence of Louis Sullvian “form follows function”. On the other hand, does that suggest that art is devoid of purpose?

I believe in the power of art as an expression of culture, it’s an indicator for society at any given moment of time. It’s a notion that is closely aligned and monitored by us at GUISE MAGAZINE- to uncover how culture shapes the way we live.

Art and design have a lot to learn from each other. This issue will explore the junctions where the disciplines are intrinsically inwoven together.

With a key focus on psychoanalysis within the art world being highlighted throughout this issue to how you can connect the relationships between art and lifestyle together, I hope you will find the tendrils of artistic thinking interlaced throughout this issue interesting and enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting this issue together.

Why is art important?

Why is art important?

I want you to think about “why is art important” and “could you live in a world without art?”. The arts matter because they are universal, they are recognised by everyone; because they deal with daily experiences in a revolutionary way, and because they question the way we look at the world. A life without art and objects, for most, would be seen as monotonous.

Adding objects and items into your life is a form of characterisation, the continuum of constructing and reconstructing spaces, to fit with your own personal style and allow emotions to be felt is driven by the importance of art. The arts allow you to express their needs and clothe them in memorable forms as well as offer a method

for expressing ideas and wishes that ordinary politics don’t. Art as a discourse creates an object of identification which individuals can connect with, which perhaps otherwise they may not have the opportunity to. Art as a topic has acted as a sculpture of economic, environmental, and social regeneration in many aspects.

Consider how you view other people’s opinions. Do you make a perception of someone based on your initial meeting with them? Art and culture allow you to consider how people are different from yourself which forms an understanding and appreciation towards the individual.

Making the overall concept of the arts an important factor of your lifestyle.

EMOTION

Firstly, let me ask the question “what does art mean to you?”. Today, artwork does not emerge from a reliable common ground.

Making art now means operating in the aspect of precariousness; it means living in doubt and paradox, doing something no one maybe cares what you do, and for which there may be no reward or recognition.

Making the work you want to make and how it is perceived means reserving these doubts and contradictions so that you may see what you’ve accomplished with a clear and steady mindset.

What this suggests, among other things, is that the current views about identifying art with “self-expression” uncovers more of a contemporary prejudice in our reasonings than an underlying trait of the discipline.

Even the disassociation of art from skill or craft is a fairly present-day concept, and more recent still is the notion that art exceeds what you do and represents what you are. So why is this important? The notion of how you address art is seen as a cultural depiction as well as a method of individuality. This goes in conjunction with how you design, decorate, and fill aspects

of your life such as your living spaces.

The concept of art is based upon your knowledge and perception of the matter. You could say that the idea of phenomenology plays a significant role in the relationship between art and emotion.

Emotionality within the formation of society, which also portrays the option to create your exposition, argumentation as well as narration of the selected art piece/ pieces therefore, the phenomenological awareness of visual stimulus makes the emotions felt when in the presence of art more meaningful. Emotion is one of the key concepts in human nature. The fundamental emotions you embrace of fear, sadness, joy, and anger along with others help gauge and animate your behaviour in certain situations. Art is all about searching and occasionally finding but not necessarily finding total satisfaction which leaves an emotion of curiosity for the individual. The mixed feeling of deep connection and admiration is a central aspect of an individual’s identity with visual arts.

Art as an experience

Art as an experience Firstly, let me ask the question “how do you react to art” and further “why do you think you’ve had this reaction”.

In its treatment of art as a language as well as a practice, and in its concern for the social relationship between art and other components- in particular social emotions.

Celebrated great art, arguably provides some of the most prized and thoughtprovoking experiences it is possible for you to have. Such experiences engage many aspects of our mental life simultaneously; filling our senses whilst at the same time making demands on our intelligence, our sympathises, and our emotions.

These links then give the experience of witnessing the said art’s importance and complexity. The experience gifted to us by great art and its forms is an experience people crave within their lifestyles. The senses discerned when engaging with these forms is an emotion people want to feel and aspire to project onto others upon entering the foreseen spaces. Yet there are problems facing art and emotion. Two problems concerning the relationship between art and emotion is that art is opinionated. The perception of art differs for every person. When engaging with art you must evaluate “what can be learned” by rejecting or deconstructing it. Allowing yourself to venture into a state of curiosity,

an opening minded space makes these experiences emotionally heightened which as an individual will open new doors of discovery. Thus, forth creating or witnessing art upholds values that have personal as well as allusive traits, it can be seen to hold both short- and long-term mood regulations for an individual; almost a form of identity building and as a sort of therapeutic purpose to which will make you question your own satisfaction with the specific form.

Emotion is the unexpectable force that makes these said experiences so heightened and memorable as well as encourages personal and cultural growth.

The euphoric reaction you entail whilst experiencing art is a construction of events which must follow with outer observation leading on to reflection allows you to determine the effect these experiences provide to you individually, the reflection process will then provide you with the possibility to educate yourself around the form of art. Experiences around visiting or witnessing a selected art form allow you to create your visual interpretations of the art, reflect on your prior knowledge as well as observe the knowledge gained throughout the discourse of the experience.

Art and its discourses How often do you think fashion and architecture are intertwined? What elements influence each other? Can you see any correlation between the two in your daily life? Swiss architectural historian, Siegfried Giedion defined modern-day architecture as an “ethical refusal of the seductions of fashionable clothing”. The paradox and juxtaposition shared between both elements heavily self-contradict one another as their narrow perception of separation is in fact highlighted by the similarities seen by one another.

The topic of art embeds a whole sphere of elements. Art influences many industries from development to the outcome. The relationship between art, fashion, and architecture has many parallels and influences one another significantly. In many ways fashion and architecture consist of the same core elements- both disciplines shelter the body, react to spatial volume, rely on a

process, and take work of creativity from its two-dimensional concept into a threedimensional reality. The bridge between fashion and architecture continues to merge and accompany one another due to architecture creating inhabitable art whereas fashion provides wearable art.

Both disciplines trace their roots back to archaic components and follow the same basic concept of enclosing an intimate space and environment around the human form. It can be said that fashion draws heavily upon architecture to interpret the spatial needs of the contemporary human, fashion also plays a role in shaping modern-day architecture and current cultural trends. Fashion designers’ use of structure and volume redistributes bodily proportions in a limpid, sculptural guise, yet, the construction brilliance is evident in garments that expand from flat forms into complex three-dimensional shapes recalling similar architectural principles.

The relationship between art, fashion and, architecture The difference between fashion and architecture is that nearly everyone understands the concept of fashion and regardless of demographic accessibility has some form of fashion available to them. The present-day fashion industry has marketed itself methodically in a way that the public is design-literate, which allows the industry continues to grow. On the other hand, architecture as an industry has a very elitist mindset with typically “appealing” architecture upholding an expensive and unattainable cliental. Rapid and arbitrary change seen throughout the recent development of each discourse can be perceived as dangerous or perhaps insubstantial due to traditional development producing a slower deliberation. The idea of persistent change surrounding both discourses

does not exclude the planning, reflection as well as construction. The more society and individuals are challenged by the determination of quick reaction, adaptation to new technologies, and lifestyle changes, the more architecture should study and rely on sartorial fashion trends.

The connection between both disciplines is significant; both rely heavily upon human proportions, mathematical, and geometry to create the protective layers around which the individual wraps themselves around.

The relationship between art, fashion and, interior design

Much like the relationship between fashion and architecture, fashion and interior design have many of the same parallels. Both discourses share the same aesthetical concepts of space, shape, volume, and form and unlike the relationship between fashion and architecture, have a lot more freeing artistic accessibility and expression to the individual.

How often do you experiment with new trends? The concept of trying new fashion trends, projects the same concept of experimenting with new colours and materials within your interior spaces.

The artistic expression witnessed in the relationship extends the connection into something more meaningful. The connection represents personal features, allowing individuals to express their creativity and uniqueness which allows an outsider to understand the people around them as well as outer societal needs. Personal expression is a feeling deeply rooted in this relationship, with one’s own opinion of beauty being expressed to everyone. Much like expressing your style with fashion, the same principle of being comfortable in your own space applies to interior design.

It could be said that while fashion trends appear due to social, economic, and historical outputs, interior design trends often appear as a result of fashion. The work produced by the correlation of the two discourses claims to be truthful and to keep a remained and consistent knowledge present. In a more conventional- or academic- way of thinking about the history of the relationship an individual might perceive this as too narrow, too personal, and too subjective.
